Furthermore, if it gets exponentially harder (as explained above) instead of linearly as group size increases, isn’t that somewhat contradictory to the point of an mmo? It seems to discourage grouping, and that seems more like an oversight or design defect than intended design. /shrug
Not exponentially, though it might feel like it. I do want to keep that part honest.
Defiance climbs linearly, Base*0.3*players.
The issue I’m identifying is that one source of scaling is zero-order. Flat. Constant. At a base of 600, Defiance raises by 180 per player. If everyone brought their hard-CC to the fight and executed flawlessly, that’s easily within reach of a few choice skills per profession. The assumption of 100% success, however, is impossibly high. Some can do 200 (about on par), but many do 100-150, which is a false hope when people think they’re bringing their hard-CC, but aren’t doing enough, and for everyone who doesn’t perform or under-performs, that means there needs to be several players with the “right” skills to take up the slack.
Though, the point stands that it does get harder per person added, and there are a lot of time-limited fights that have breaks which make veterans groan when there’s a large crowd doing them. And that is counter to one of GW2’s original philosophies.
Yeah, I worded that poorly. It wasn’t the actual defiance but the perceived which seems to blow up, as a result of soft cc not keeping up with the scaling. I agree with that.
I don’t understand the allure of outfits, from a player’s point of view. Apart from the issues of dye channels and shoulders, everyone who wears them looks alike – which seems the very antithesis of what this game is about (Fashion Wars 2). You pay for them, and yet you look like other people wearing them. /shrug Each to his own, I guess.
The same can be said about undyable backpieces, but people still wear them and ultimately look similar (primarily because a portion of your attention is drawn away to said wings/backpieces).
But the problem I have with people who try to use this mentality as a vice against outfits is that, you can only wear one outfit at a time. How can you look alike if you’re not wearing the same outfit? Oh, you’re wearing the same outfit? ~click~ Now you’re not wearing the same outfit.
You could say “I’m talking about someone wearing the same outfit”, to which read my 1st paragraph. You’ll look the same as someone else who wears the most attention drawing pieces as you (usually, helm, shoulders, body and back…and I guess weapons in some cases).
As for why I like outfits: They look good. They not only look good, but in some cases, they look like something you could never wear before, which is a troubling issue when I go to make an armorset look. Most pieces look the same as the other lists of options with some changes (swap a spike or two for a jagged spike, or maybe an added cloth texture under those spikes). Outfits are a great thing. You’ll look even less like everyone else when more outfits are released.
As an aside, there’s nothing wrong with looking alike sometimes too. Having everyone wearing a “team uniform” like those old comic book supergroups can be a neat option too.
Relax. I wasn’t ..uh.. trying to “use this mentality as a vice against outfits”. They’re not my cup of tea but you’re welcome to them. Each to his own.
^ Beat me to it. I started only two years ago and I didn’t feel behind then, or now.
One of my biggest disappointments in the PoF announcement is that they didn’t announce that they were making a major infrastructure change that should have been made years ago, rebuilding the armor system to allow for cross-class armoring.
I understand the challenges involved here, but the longer they let it ride, the worse it’s going to be to fix it, and fixing it would be a MASSIVE improvement to the game.
I get the difficulty, the way it’s set up now, light, medium, and heavy armors use different animation rigs, and have different separation lines and design trends. But what they need to do is build a single unified skeleton that can work for all three types reasonably well, rebuild as many of the armor pieces as possible to fit on this new skeleton, lengthening and shortening hem lines as best they can. In the most extreme cases they can fuse the top and bottom together, like you already see in things like Citadel of Flame armors, where if you wear the torso, then it automatically shows the legs as well, even if you have different legs on.
This may require going in manually and retooling dozens of armor pieces to fit properly, and that’s not inconsequential, but it is worth doing. Doing this would not only allow them to take Outfits and release them as mix-and-match components, but would also just instantly triple the costume design variety for every class. Suddenly Heavy and Light armors could wear Thieves hoods. Heavy armor classes could wear the skimpy light armors, or Light armor classes could wear beefy heavy jackets.
And as for the original consideration that “the class should have a single armor type because it allows PvPers to visually tell them apart,” well with all the auras, Outfits, and added intra-class variety added since launch, that’s a completely pointless argument already, and besides which they’ve added “show generic opponents” options to both PvP modes so that the skins an opponent is wearing are moot.
They need to do it, and they need to do it as soon as possible. Put whatever people are needed on the project to make it happen.
I’m all for cross-class armour (or is it cross-weight?) but I’m of the opinion that it doesn’t have to be as hard as you describe. We don’t need a new kind of skeleton or any re-tooling. Just let us use any armour on any toon and let us decide what looks good. We can figure out how to combine things to reduce clipping. We have that power. (#adulting)
I enjoy condi chrono and I’d never say no to some staff love. +1

Since everything else about an encounter becomes easier with more people, needing people to provide a bare minimum for CC is not to much to ask for.
Huh? Clearly, not all encounters get easier with more people, as is being discussed right here in this thread. And the question isn’t whether there should be some bare minimum of CC – it’s whether that minimum should rise linearly or exponentially with the number of players.
In other words, if a certain level of CC is required for five players, then in the case of ten players, should the minimum CC be double that, or quadruple?
This game is quite different from other games and for being 5 years old has alot of ground to cover as far as mechanics go.
The mechanic you had a problem with was knowing that people park their toons at nodes and log in just to farm them. If that seemed weird, it would be only natural to ask about it in the forums…. or just observe for a few weeks or months. Reporting them as a cheater from the get-go seems an odd first reaction to something you’re not familiar with. But whatever. Each to his own.
everyone else thank you for the replies.
Ouch. Welcome to the game. I really do hope you enjoy it.

Congradulations!!
^ And that’s bad… how? You’ve made the argument. Now flesh it out.
PS for Teq one of the two closest WPs has a nearby repair, tucked into a Quaggan hovel.
Whoah! That’s racist. Those quaggans are just socio-economically disadvantaged and forced to live in a rough neighbourhood. They’re doing the best they can with what they’ve got. Have you tried living next to Teq?
It makes sense when you consider that game developers need revenue to develop these maps, and anet have a once off purchase model instead of an ongoing subscription, which is cheaper for players. The maps don’t even have to be purchased with real money. you can use in-game gold to buy the gems. I did that for LS2, since I came to the game after it. Does that make the system more understandable now?
EDIT: In fact, I used my hard-earned gold to buy LS2 for a friend, as you can do for yours.
Fortunately there’s no way to invade the privacy of all players in the map as you’re asking, and – to be frank – it’s weird to me that you’ve been playing two weeks and before you even understand the mechanics of the game and what is/isn’t legit, you’re already reporting people for botting? I’ve been playing for years and I’m never sure if someone’s botting or just logging in and out quickly, as the other posters have explained. Coming straight into a game and doing that… just seem overly judgemental.

A 1 second stun is pretty silly against a regular mob, especially for an elite skill.
That’s something I can agree with.
When in a group, please consider helping the group rather than be a detraction.
That means doing what the group needs not what you think is right.
The needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many. Or the few. -_-
I kinda wish we could use the elite spec weapons without the elite specs. I’d love to have a thief who could wield a staff and a sniper rifle, even without the elite spec traits for either.
That aside, I didn’t realise you needed HOT for gliding in PoF. I can’t imagine playing without gliding anymore.
There are three things wrong with this thread: i) the title should really mention necro, since that’s your beef, ii) this thread should be in the necro subforum, and iii) warhorns aren’t aweful.
A request that has been raised time and again, because it makes sense. I hope they figure out a solution one day. In the meantime, this really belongs in the mesmer forum, and needs a better title. Seriously. “Mesmer”? That’s it?!?
^ I like it. Now I want an emote to do that mime act where they pretend there’s an invisible wall. It would be so funny because the game is full of strangely placed invisible walls.
^ Let’s get Lindsay on it. She’ll make it happen.
He’s only been there a few days. Time doesn’t fly in Tyria at the same rate is does for us in RL.
^ That’s true. And in terms of physics, the closer you are to the centre of gravity the slower time flows. We don’t know how deep that well is. And how gravity works in Tyria may be different – not to mention the magical ramifications. For all we know, Blaine could be in a bubble of slow-time in a magical well and might just outlive us all.
It is pretty standard for men to find anything with the general female shape to be attractive. No matter how far away they appear.
Male pixel: .
Female pixel: .GENERAL FEMALE SHAPE
I don’t know. That female pixel really has it goin’ awnnn.. ;D
In just about every circumstance that I play a Mirage played by me would beat a Core Mesmer played by me.
Wait, what…? A mirage played by you would beat a core mes played by you? So… you’re playing with yourself? ;D
It’s not something I’ve seen in the game, but when I think mesmer I envision skills that can:
1. Generate a dozen clones. They don’t have to do any damage, just run around and dodge in a more naturalistic way.
2. OR, keep the three clones but have them perfectly imitate everything I do, albeit facing towards the target.
The reason I specifically asked about build templates was because with 9 new elites specializations coming, coupled with the fact that the recent direction of the game has been towards harder ‘group’ content that requires players to be easily be able to switch builds to get into groups – A build template system should have been something the Dev’s considered as an essential game system that they should have developed years ago in anticipation of where they were taking the game, rather than something that players wanted and ‘not a priority’
This and all the other examples we have had over the years of ‘things’ introduced to the game without proper thought or planning which resulted in them either being abandoned or having to find ‘fixes’ after the fact, really do sum up the state of the game.
Anet needs to work on ensuring that underlying game systems and mechanics are in place, before, not after introducing content.
it is refreshing to hear some one saying it besides me . not only that but I fully agree with you on these things . and think anet should had the forethoughts to do so . but I think we both can agree that is not the case.
Yeah, I agree this is an ongoing problem with them. It’s short of a “shoot first, then ask questions you never answer later”.
very true and I agree with that thought fully . its like asking for a nice steak and getting pizza
I think a more accurate analogy of how ArenaNet has handled content versus features, bug fixes, and profession balance is more akin to ordering a delicious NY strip steak with grilled asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes, but when it comes time to get your food, they bring the steak without the sides. When you ask the server where the sides are, they say they’re coming, then 15 minutes later they return with the grilled asparagus, but it’s cold. Then when you ask about the mashed potatoes they say they’re not a priority at the moment, then they return with an uncooked potato 20 minutes later, along with an advertisement for the filet mignon they’re adding to the menu next week.
This analogy is missing something: a fellow diner at a nearby table who leans over and declares that the restaurant never actually offered “NY strip steak with grilled asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes” on their menu and that it was all your misunderstanding if you thought they did. He’ll also tell you the restaurant never actually promised to NOT serve uncooked potatoes.
I’ve been tossing apples into the well for him, now that Hal doesn’t need them anymore since his…. accident.
You forget Herta and the II from Mawdrey :d
The Herta Princess, Star of Mawdrey II
fixed this for you
Star Princess Herta Mawdrey II
;)
PS: aww, was too late, should have read further lol xD
LOL. Great minds think alike.
Not to sound rude, but I think Anet probably has already thought of this when they were designing the game. and settled on this current system.
If they did, then they clearly settled incorrectly and it should be reevaluated.
Ouch.
I don’t understand everything you’re suggesting, but it’s clear that anet should fire everybody and bring you on to overhaul the whole game. ;D
We are all bugs.
This reminds me of various modern games, like AC and hitman, that use outlines for enemies so you can see them through walls (using eagle vision or whatever in AC).
It got me thinking how much I’d like to see the little icons above enemies heads that you see in AC. When they spot you, a little exclamation mark would pop up briefly. Even better if it were a different kind of exclamation mark if the mob was aggroed on you or someone else. You could immediately tell which mob has you in combat.
And when you run a mob to the ends of its lease and it gives up, it could do another icon to indicate that it’s bored and going home.
Now I’m getting carried away with this: imagine if mobs could randomly fall asleep for short periods (micro-sleeps!). When they do, a “Zzzz” appears above their heads. During that time, attacking them from any angle would count as hitting them from behind and they wouldn’t be aware of you approaching like they are now – even when you’re approaching from behind.
The possibilities..
My wish for this would be some more options to see more of our character portraits on-screen at the same time. I don’t need to see a big model of my toon on the login page. I’d be happy with some view where the entire screen is taken up by the portraits of my toons, so I can instantly pick the one I want without scrolling back and forth.
That could then be sorted alphabetically, or even separated into professions.
There’s also the Obsidian you can buy with it which goes into Empyreal Stars, Dragonite, Bloodstone Bricks and Fulgerite. I can’t see myself ever having a surplus of unbound magic. It’s too easy to spend.
You forget Herta and the II from Mawdrey :d
The Herta Princess, Star of Mawdrey II
That’s clunky. How about…. “Star Princess Herta-Mawdrey II”?
Or combine with the other one for “Sentient Star Princess Herta-Mawdrey II”!
I’m all for combining eaters. Or at the very least, allow them all to eat from the materials bank. +1
What am I seeing exactly? O_o
Isn’t it self explanatory? The players who are happy with their classes are busy playing them. The ones that aren’t feel a need to vent. It’s a kind of unconcious natural selection.
Alas, if only forum topics could be more descriptive, so readers could know what they’re about before being subjected to the sight of a gaudy asura.
jk.. that’s actually kinda cool
Personally, I’m saving my unbound magic for purchasing things. There’s plenty of money flying around for WP costs. I don’t think I’d ever use a feature like that. /shrug
no.
this idea is plain awful.
Why? As someone who doesn’t play rev much and is learning about it, some more detail would help.
Can I vote for a cyborg corgi? With eyes that shoot lazers?
You didnt go down did you? I know she appears if you go down and you have the story instance shes a part of active. A crack in the ice i believe is the one.
Aha! That might be it. I don’t remember going down because I was distracted by Aurene but I did have Crack in the Ice active on that toon! Thanks. I’ll have to test this.
Had a strange experience today… unrelated to any perception-altering substances.
I killed some wasp in Fields of Ruin and a translucent Aurene briefly appeared before me. It resembled that sad ley line anomaly from several months ago.
Has anyone else seen something like this? Could it be the start of some new current event leading up to PoF or is there anything else that might cause a holographic Aurene to pop up briefly?
You have to be aware that the eaters were given limits on purpose by anet. They’re not going to provide you with a means to circumvent them. If they wanted to do that, they could just increase how much the eaters could eat.
On the subject of airship oil and those other HOT mats that go into fulgerite – it’d be nice to have an eater. I just can’t craft enough fulgerite to use them up fast enough. A vendor would do too. But I just don’t see it happening.
If your goal is to have anet read this, you’ll probably want to format it in a way that’s more readable. I find walls of text off-putting personally. Try breaking it up into paragraphs and consider bullet points.
^ Or.. the professor could say there’s a cat in the box called Lazarus, and you have to guess if it’s really called Lazarus or it’s a cat called Balthazar pretending to be Lazarus.
So we’re all agreed? More cats. MOAR CATS!
I think there’s armours aplenty already (not that I’d mind more). I’ve said it before and I’ll say it now – all they need to do is open up the weight classes so any toon can use any armour. Kitten the clipping. We can handle it. Give us the freedom of choosing.
I am going to re-state, that if flying mounts, actual flying, are put into this game I will uninstall and never support Arenanet again. After ten plus years of playing your games, I will quit.
Alas, the Greyhawk will never fly. :/
I wish they would just open up the armour weights (yes, I said it) so we could mix and match across any weight and clipping be kitten ed. My mes wants a gunslinger hat.
