I use my flamethrower build for just about everything I do now, including dungeons. I don’t experience anywhere near 75% miss rate. I am way too survivable and do way too much damage using this build to put it away because of another player’s personal downfalls with the kit.

You misunderstand, I’m not basing this on my “personal experience.” It’s a confirmed bug that has nothing to do with targetting. Somebody did some tests and found out the miss rate was about 75%. Couldn’t find the exact post for that though.

From the bug list stickied in this section…

*Flamethrower’s Flame Jet and Elixir Gun’s Fumigate will often miss targets and destructible objects (when the player and its target are at even slightly different elevations). It also appears to be affected by camera angle.
*Flamethrower’s Flame Blast will often be obstructed after using Air Blast and will not explode when hitting the environment.

-EDIT- Read the whole engineer bug list. It’s four full posts long.

With the current state of condition removal, grenades being one of the only aimed skills in the entire game, their many bugs, the ease with which turrets can be killed by a single AoE and the fact that everything else an engineer can do somebody else can do better you will rarely see them outside of PUGs. Very very few tPvP teams use an engineer. These are the realities. I think that speaks for itself.

In my opinion (which is not the same as fact) engineers are a poorly designed, buggy profession with a few neat tricks and a fundamentally enjoyable though largely ineffective playing style. And as Whelm said, any decent experienced player can take an engineer up against players who aren’t experienced and do passably well. That’s not the issue. But when the best tPvP players in GW2 choose not to use the profession at a highly competitive level, that says more than a few WvW victories ever could.

Just hit 80 on my little engy, first character maxed for me. I feel like I do passably well, running a flamethrower and elixirs, 10/30/0/30/0. Only problems come up when I need to break something that isn’t moving. You know, like a cart. Because flamethrowers are naturally inept at hitting carts. Or something.

Started playing my guardian a bit again, and it’s a world apart. Its like, I don’t need to run in circles while praying to the divines and chugging more purple potion than a gamer does do? How does that work?

Still, the style of the engineer keeps me hooked, it may not be as powerful as most other classes right now, but there’s a certain satisfaction that comes from burning a half dozen enemies to a crisp while knowing if they catch you, you die.

Also, elixir x. Because when you’re 1v1ing a noob guardian, nothing is funnier than seeing a 3 foot tall asura punching the crudnebbits out of a norn. Skilled guardies, not so much.

Flame throwers have a 75% miss rate due to a bug. If you are using them in dungeons, you’re kind of a jerk. Bomb kit is much more useful. Any other kit is. The spam-ability of blast combo finishers are the only good thing (compared to other professions) engineers can bring to a dungeon team ATM.

If you don’t want to be a fifth wheel as Isslair said, don’t bring flamethrower to anything ever. I love my engineer but if I were leading a group (in any game mode) and the engineer wanted to use flamethrower I would either convince them to switch to a different kit or kick them from the group. I’m not so mean I won’t take engineers, but they have to make an effort to work around their professions bugs. That is the minimum skill level required to play them (or any profession really).

so Elementalists are no longer the worst class? Again I ironically quit leveling mine for my engineer after realizing they can’t do pvp without a bunker and all these other bad things about the class that were ranted about in the forums. Did they get uber buffed? I thought the fire and lighting tree were still poorly designed and that they need focus on arcane just to function?(Last time I played)

Elementalists have some serious survivability issues at low levels. You will eat a lot of dirt. They also suffered from horrible downed skills and are still a little weak on the damage side. People have learned how to play them better now, so there’s less concern about how much they die at lower levels. ANet also did a lot to fix their downed state. And now they’ve said that they’re going to take a look at their damage and probably beef it up some (while reducing AoE at some point).

Almost all professions need to have a rework of their traits in my opinion (I don’t think ANet implemented them very well). Elementalist still needs to trait deep into arcane. Even classes with fairly well built trait lines need work done to them though so everybody is in the same boat.

Elementalists have an important role in every part of the meta, dungeons, PvP and WvW. What makes the elementalist so useful is attunement swapping. They can do a lot of things in every build plus they can specialize into bunker, AoE, DD, SD or whatever.

They along with necromancers, guardians, thiefs and mesmers are pretty much always wanted. These are all my opinions/observation though. While I’m sure I have the gist of it, I may not be entirely correct in every statement (I know I’m the only person on these forums that doesn’t know everything right?). But you get a general idea.

The only professions I would caution people against are ranger and engineer. Ranger is a mixed bag, some great stuff, some terrible but engineer is in a really sad state. It just brings nothing to the table that somebody else doesn’t do better and they can’t do them all at once like the elementalist, they have to trait to perform a role and are still inferior once they do since they have so many bugs.

They can nerf us all they like. At this point, I don’t think the Engineers that’re here are going anywhere. They can give us Nerf guns with the actual effect of Nerf guns, replace our Toolkit with a Nerf Bat, Flamethrower and Elixir Gun with Super Soakers, our Grenade Kit with bean-bags and our Bomb kit with a Gardening Kit, make our Elixirs have a 20%+ chance to inflict conditions on us, our Gadgets explode, and our Turrets malfunction, but I think the Engineer now is the stubbornest Engineer there ever will be.

ROFL I would love a nerf gun kit. I hope they do that. It would be so funny.

It’s Nerf (engineers) or nothin!

I’ve heard that necro’s are suffering as badly as engi’s right now.

You can basically tell what classes have it the worst by looking at the number of negative threads on the front page.. Warriors have none.. lel.

The necro needs some better damage on axe, a few bug fixes, trait fixes and an AI patch. Then just tweaking. But then again, all classes need bug fixes, trait fixes and weapon balancing.

Pretty much all of the top tPvP teams run a necro. It’s not flashy like a mesmer, guardian, thief or ele but it’s necessary. But yeah, you’ll see a necro a mesmer and an ele in almost every single team.

Conversly, you’ll almost never see an engineer. Warriors and guardians are pretty common, rangers sometimes too. Engineers, almost never. Nobody is as bad off as them. Simply because anything an engineer can do, somebody else can do better.

Everybody doesn’t have to agree. But everybody has to live with the fact that people disagree with them and think they’re wrong. So we may as well all be civil while we disagree.

I’ve been playing since beta and seen the engineers many incarnations. I think I can safely say, they’re as weak as I’ve ever seen them. But if you disagree, please feel free to state your opinion and reasoning. But please don’t try and pick fights just because people don’t see things your way. I’m not going to punish anybody for thinking that the engineer is in good shape.

It’s just frustrating seeing that patch after patch there’s just nothing.

Honestly, MMO’s shouldn’t be released late in the year. There are too many holidays; too many players finding problems, too few coders fixing problems. That is – I think – the major reason that there have been no significant class balance changes yet. There’s been nobody at ArenaNet to fix them. And there’s a long list of priority changes that needed to be made before fixing the AI bug. That said, this has been an issues since day one of necro alpha.

No matter what happens to the engineer it is going to require major rebalancing. So I’m good with having a gadget kit or anything else as long as I could actually be versatile. IMNHO, the engineer needs to be redesigned to serve as a support class since ANet clearly doesn’t want us to have versatility and damage (like the elementalist).

Battlemage brings up (I think) a good point. I think the whole AC story mode dungeon is actually pretty clever, especially the lovers. I’d love to see more boss fights like that. And there are other ones too.

Also, because I hope Anet is still reading, I think there’s a lot of bosses that have the foundations of a really great fight, they just need some refinement and a few (thousand) less hit points. And possibly some unique boss-only drops like in GW1, those were really fun to try and get.

Hahaha, so I got a message from the Forum Mods saying I was trolling on some of my posts. Anybody else get that here? Cause I’m not trolling at all. Not gonna mention the ones I got incited for cause I’ll probably get another infraction, but seriously, I play engineer and I can’t even joke? Not even trying to troll nobody here haha.

They can post w/e they want they don’t care, our concerns are unanswered tickets. I am not getting any sense of trolling here either, here’s a new reference.

This is a simple thread to vent and laugh since the engineer threads feels like a prison now all waiting for a engineer patch. lightening up the mood is no way trolling.

I get the distinct impression that the mods are unhappy with us for this little mini-revolt we’ve been having on the engineer forums. I won’t say why I think that since it might get me an infraction (the first rule of infraction club is “Don’t talk about infraction club” right?). But I have been noticing a lot of deleted posts. Some of them should have been deleted though.

I do have to admit we are trolling ANet quite a bit here (not that I don’t think they’ve earned it). I’ll make a new prediction for the next patch – no significant engineer changes. They’ll stop working on the engineer just because we have been so unruly. >:o(

At any rate, I don’t think they’ll give you a damage nerf. They’ll adjust things. That’s all mesmers need. It’s a fundamentally solid profession.

Toughness Vs Vitality for Fractal?

I don’t know the answer since I haven’t run fractals on my necro (she is only level 34 right now). But I have found that the best survival I can get is when using all three HP pools. All three? HP, Life Force, Plague Form. And each point to Vitality increases all three HP pools. Someone did the math on it and I think it’s basically 25 effective vitality per 10 vitality. But of course, toughness always helps.

-EDIT-

Also, the juggermancer necros max vitality over toughness but toughness is their secondary.

They already said DD eles will get a damage buff so no they will not get nerfed.

Elementalists will get a general damage buff you mean? That’s what I thought they said. The problem with the DD ele isn’t the damage output. It doesn’t do all that much damage. The mobility will end up being reduced though. The same thing happened with the ele in GW1. And the thief for that matter. It’s like deja vu.

During the initial jumping puzzle, if you fall off, you’re moved back to the start so you don’t end up in an area where you can’t continue. You can either use the #4 downed skill (Bandage) to revive and try again, or you can allow yourself to die and restart at the checkpoint, which is past the bridge. So it’s entirely optional, but not obvious.

For the traps, evade!

Thank you for the reply. I did not know that you could die and restart past that part, I’ve always just healed because I didn’t want to have to pay to fix my gear. So has my brother. For the traps you’re saying that the proper way is to run/jump past the first one and dodge past the second one then? I wish you had some kind of training level or something so that people could learn to do that without needing a dev post. At any rate, I thank you and I’ll see if my brother can get past it on his own next time (if he or I ever make another priory character).

Or…

Some of us know how to counter them, have played the build and still agree it’s going to get nerfed. Claiming the standard D/D Ele has no damage output is a lie, simply because a build doesn’t spam large numbers doesn’t mean it doesn’t have damage output.

That’s the necromancer’s secret. No (very few) large numbers, lots of missing health.

In GW1 ANet adjusted the professions the entire time. They never once stopped and said, “Hey, this profession is done.” The same thing will happen with GW2. People just don’t understand that because they’re too used to their experiences in other MMOs. I mean I complained for a bit about the engineer nerf and all too. So I’m no angel. What did ANet nerf solely because people complained about it? And what makes you think that they’ve done this? They’ve always stated that they rely heavily on metrics to determine what they do and do not change in the metagame. And since a lot of their changes don’t make any sense to me and/or are not a great source of complaint on the forums I’m assuming they are seeing things in the metrics. It’s possible I’m wrong and they don’t care about metrics any more but I doubt it.

Final Plea

This game is still rated for 13+. This mission just isn’t really playable if your 13 and haven’t been playing video games since the age of 5. My brother is a casual gamer who doesn’t have a console (I know crazy right). We’re both casual gamers. I play games 15-20 hours a week and I’m the most hard core gamer in my family. But last time I checked the box didn’t say 13+ (if you’re a gamer). This game isn’t easy for a kid to play. It’s very unforgiving of mistakes even for adults, and that’s fine. I just don’t want my brother to feel like he isn’t good enough to keep playing because he can’t jump fast enough. He loves GW2 more than I do. He has the books and toys and everything.

Anyway, I still love the game. And I’ll still play if it isn’t fixed or if this post gets buried in two hours and ignored. LOL

In the Priory Quest Bad Blood: Search for the Sanguinary Blade my kid brother is on the part where he needs to go through the traps in the Mistirevin gorge or whatever the actual cave is called.

First, I want to say that the personal stories are one of my favorite things about GW2 (especially the asura quests). Also I want everybody to know that this is not a complaint thread. I understand that it’s a big game and it can be difficult to keep them all running smoothly and balanced. The game is young. Some of you love GW2 (like me). I get that. Please don’t troll me or flame me.

The Jumping Puzzle:

In the first section you are asked to walk across the top of a narrow bridge hiding behind walls when the winds get rough. You’re supposed to use the flags to see when to go.

Even knowing how to do this quest (on my second priory character) it was impossible to get past without getting blown off the bridge. The problem here isn’t that it’s challenging. I like the challenge.

In an MMO developers need to prepare for different levels of skill. My little brother though he can and loves to play GW2, couldn’t do this part. It caused him a great deal of frustration. This is not an optional jumping puzzle. You have to do it to finish your personal story for the priory.

There are a lot of little bumps and steps on the walkway where you are forced to jump. Some people, especially younger players, are not that good at the jumping part of the game. I will not go into whether or not the controls need to be adjusted or any of that stuff because that is a different conversation and even though they’re not great, they’re good enough for me.

Additionally, the wind doesn’t just knock you down. It instantly downs you and exits you from the entire cave. The problem with this is that twice I have been insta-downed at the end of the jumping puzzle, at Sieran’s feet. Which adds to the frustration.

Overall, it can be a very frustrating experience. I can’t picture my little brother being able to do it (he’s young not stupid). He can play the game very well for a thirteen-year old but the controls of the jumping puzzle, the many edges that keep him from just walking across and the sudden gusts of wind are just too much for him.

Here are my suggested potential fixes. Add a little flutter to the flags before the actual insta-down gust of wind. This will allow younger players like my brother to know when to go hide behind the wall (or at least to prepare them for restarting). Secondly, give more time between each gust or remove the step-ups so that it is possible to walk across.

That said, the second jumping puzzle part is perfectly fine since you can teleport across. You may be able to teleport across the first part but nobody ever will because they’ll be caught in a continual cycle of being ejected from the cave.

The Traps:

I loved the traps in GW1. They were seamless and well-designed. The traps in the hallway are very frustrating. I don’t know why. Most of the other traps in GW2 are fine. But these ones are lethal and basically impossible to avoid.

Every time I have gone through this mission at the end of the first section traps I somehow find myself knocked to the ground, almost downed at the feet of a son of svanir who gets at least one good hit in before I can get up. I don’t know how that happens but it happens every time. I suspect part of it is that I need a faster internet connection. (DSL sucks.)

This is again another part my kid brother cannot get past. I have to do it for him and even I die half the time.

To fix this would be pretty simple. Allow me to actually have room in between the traps to stand. I could jump over one and wait for the next one to pop up. As it is now, if you pause in between the traps you will get hit by the trap when it pops up because you are touching the little red circle. Another fix would be to just make them less lethal. They do a lot of damage. I’ve been one-shotted by trying to stand in between the traps, getting hit from two of them.

Skip It, Skip it Good

This is my final suggestion. Allow players to skip some of these quests that they find too difficult. What form should skipping take? I don’t know. Tokens, points, free-for-all I don’t know. But my brother likes the stories. He shouldn’t be excluded from participating in them because he can’t get past one. Please, ANet. Throw him a bone.

Agreement with evilsardine

in Elementalist

Posted by: Zonzai.2341

Zonzai.2341

The problem with his whole argument is that D/D isn’t overpowered. The problem is it outshines the other weapon options.

The problem is that all other professions have inferior weapons? Not likely. The DD ele will be getting a nerf and it has nothing to do with EvilSardine asking the devs to nerf it. It’s overpowered because it has too much mobility. The current metagame CC isn’t strong enough to cope with them. And I don’t see ANet beefing up the CC much. So expect the nerf. Brace for impact or something.

But DD eles will still be viable and still be good after the nerf so don’t get your panties in a bunch. They just won’t be the only choice for sPvP elementalists. Of course ANet might just give the weapon a 30% damage nerf rendering it entirely useless like they did with engineer grenades. Then they’ll suck. But hopefully, ANet won’t do that.

The elementalist is best described as an lemming-entalist until about 30. That’s pretty much the general rule of thumb for all of the professions though. Once you get to 30 you will actually have a good idea of how they will be at 80. One of the things that ANet did really well was create a game with smooth leveling from the 30-80. So hang in there. Also, if you like range but want some serious all-around survivability try the necromancer.

Even though I know EvilSardine is a troll, I agree with him (this time). The mobility of the DD ele is too extreme. Which is obviously why it has become so popular in the WvW meta. ANet will nerf the DD ele. It’s just going to happen. They didn’t need to read any forum posts to know it needed a nerf. So, when you DD elese get your nerf don’t blame EvilSardine for it.

That’s a matter of perspective. I really enjoyed PvE and PvP in GW1. In GW2 I find it very difficult to enjoy anything but WvW.

I’m not a farmer but I’m not super casual. I don’t spend 40 hours a week on but I spend more than 20. That’s just enough to play and enjoy the game more than a couple hours a day but not long enough to gear out every character in exotics (or any character). And I think most people who play MMO’s fall in to the same category. Once we’re done leveling one character to 80 there’s not much reason for us to play GW2 other than WvW.

The incentive to farm any of the dragons is gone.

The loot received for your effort is unbalanced. If the time spent on Jormag for the chest yields the same rewards as running around killing mobs for the same amount of time something must be off. Blue items shouldn’t even be on the loot table for the chests. Now that the mobs around the dragons rarely drop anything, why bother?

The epic fights don’t offer anything epic in return.

This is true for pretty much all GW2 bosses isn’t it? Maybe I’m just very lucky with mob drops and very unlucky with boss drops but I always get better coin from just farming.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Main reason why people skill bosses or any other boss like foe is not hp, its not time required to kill or difficulty to do so, it is loot. Those so called Bosses have nothing to offer as a reward for 10-30minutes long encounter which makes most player just ignore them and run past them.

This is MMORPG, everything revolves around loot, dungeons are played for loot, people kill everything in their path for loot, and only thing that this game doesn’t have, guess, its LOOT! 90% of dungeons and “end game” content is abandoned because people don’t get loot they deserve, especially for hours long dungeons like COE or arah.

TL;DR: Improve bosses, but improve drops as well. One without the other will only make things worse.

I hope somebody at ANet is still paying attention to this thread. Boss loot is pretty bad. I get a much better time to reward ratio by skipping bosses and clearing maps instead. Fight one boss for 30 minutes or 30 low-level mobs and you’ll get better experience and more cash from the low-level mobs.

… is only a day ago since a developer replayed to this threat even… what you expect? an answer once an hour or what from them?…

What you smokin bro? Paying attention to =/= replying to. I said I HOPE not I EXPECT so don’t troll me.

Why do PvE bosses seem to equate to...

ANet doesn’t just nerf things because people complain about them. They rely heavily on metrics. Too heavily if you ask me.

Good video. Great teamwork. Ignore the trolls.

now do that as a team of engineers and i shall praise you.

Yeah, right. You’d be more likely to succeed with a team of Moas.

Well that’s your problem right there, you’re an engineer. They’re the biggest bugs in the game. LOL

Seriously though, this happens to me on my engineer too. Switch to another profession, it won’t happen any more. At least it doesn’t happen on my necromancer or warrior.

Enemies respawn too fast in my personal opinion

Respawn times are certainly too fast. That’s been one of my chief gripes with GW2 since the beginning. 95-120 seconds is too fast when it takes you 95-120 seconds to kill each mob. At that point you’re constantly fighting the mobs you’ve just killed.

Any environment you run Test Cases in and compile your code could be considered a test server-and without looking at the source code I couldn’t tell you how many collisions and interactions go into one weapon hitting things. You’ve got several calculations-based on stats, then several based on geometry, location, the gfx engine, whatever the network connectivity looks like and more. That’s just what I KNOW has to happen. A lot goes into one weapon. All of their other weapons work, worked during beta, so I wouldn’t say their QA is worthless. That’s a bit dramatic.

It’s not about “simple plug in X here and Y will happen”. No matter how much you finesse an engine, it’s not as though there is a universal “weapon structure”. Each weapon is made by hand. When you have an Object in OO programming, which I’m assuming they’re using here, you then have abstraction. Each “One” thing in the game is made up of a ton of classes, structures, and sub-classes. The graphics that represent and object are coded in an entirely different place than the actions that object takes, and how it interacts with the game engine is probably in yet another. Positioning, stats, animation, how each character carries it all have to be coded for each weapon.

The Givers items are not runes, they are not any item we’ve seen before. These are coded by hand, individually. You can use the basic “weapon” class structure, tack on the graphics, etc, but you’ve got (especially in a game this huge) plenty of abstraction levels to deal with. The items are unique. This is not a simple function. You don’t just copy/paste/change numbers in a game this size with a custom engine. It is nowhere near that simple.

TL; DR: It’s not as simple as copy/paste/change numbers, adding new items is not a simple process.

It’s irritating, they should have responded by now, a fix should be in the works, those things I agree with. Thrashing the dev team for a mistake isn’t fair.

Just posting this so everybody can read it without hitting REPLY.

ANet’s bad dream…

Mr. Spock: ANet to nerfineering. Negative effect on grenade power reduction. Damage is still increasing.

Lt. Cmdr. Montgomery Scott: Aye, Mr. Spock, and I found out why. The emergency bypass control of the matter/antimatter integrator is fused. It’s completely useless. The engineers are running wild; there’s no way to get at them. We should reach maximum overload in about 15 minutes.

Mr. Spock: I would calculate 14.87 minutes, Mr. Scott.

Lt. Cmdr. Montgomery Scott: Those few seconds will not make any difference, Mr. Spock, because you and I and the rest of the professions will no longer be here to bandy it back and forth. The engineers are going to blow us up, and there’s nothing in the universe can stop them.

Don’t stand in 100 blades. ;p

But seriously, warriors are kind of meh in tPvP. Which will be the metering stick for ANet. They’re better now than they were and they’ll get better still. ANet has stated they like where the warrior is. And I think they base a lot of their metrics on how many people play what profession. Those two things make me think that the mesmer, thief and guardian will be the nerfed classes. I could be wrong though.

One of our goals for 2013 will be evaluating all of the bosses and creatures in the game, from open world to dungeons, to try and make them more exciting and fun to fight against.

In general if anything has a really high health pool, it needs to have unique abilities to make it exciting for the entire time, or actually change abilities/tactics as it goes down in health to ensure it stays fun and exciting to fight against.

We realize there are a number of bosses in the game, from the open world to instances that all can be more fun to fight than they are now. We’ll be tackling that this year in part of our goal to make our core game as strong as possible.

Thank you! That’s good to hear.
