I think asura are like eugenicists. I see them as being willing to lobotomize, euthanize and assassinate as long as they feel it advances the goals of their research, their crew or their cause. Part of them is amoral, part of them is violent and part of them is immoral by human standards. And it seems to me that all of that is totally acceptable in their society. They’re kind of like little mad scientists.

Why are you using hammer and no ranged weapons for small scale WvW? It seems like a high mobility build would be much more important. I’m just curious here.

I experience this problem all the time. It has gotten me killed more than once because on my hammer/longbow warrior Bull’s Charge is pretty much my go to mobility skill. When it whiffs on a big bad guy or when I’m low on HP and it’s my only KD not on cool down, I’m usually dead. The sad thing is that it used to work perfectly. I don’t know what happened but something has changed in the last 3-4 weeks that has made it miss a lot more.

I think he was just exaggerating.

I don’t know man, I’ve beaten guardians on my hammer warrior. Try the fear me shout, it can’t be blocked with aegis. Then chain it with bull’s charge while they flee, and smack them with backbreaker when they get up. That’s how I’ve done it in the past.

I usually swap to bow and start kiting after that but that won’t work without a bow or rifle. Hopefully, by the time you’re out of knockdowns they’ll either be running away or somebody else will show up. I know hammer lacks mobility but maybe swapping in bull’s charge and swapping out the sword will help?

Now, if you’re talking about taking on bunker guardians, nothing short of getting the jump on them with a pure burst damage build will take them down. Maybe that’s the problem?

Norn warrior, easily dodged\countered

Zonzai.2341

Two words: tab targetting.

Targeting has nothing to do with it, it’s about seeing.

i play a norn warrior and my biggest problem isnt pvp its kitten jumping puzzles…. i cant see around myself. if anet could add like a way to fade your character a little so we could see through them that would be great thats the only thing i think is unfair (screen space) other than that i want you to see me, im not a theif im a warrior. i want you to know exactly who killed you.

proud to be Norn

Yeah my guardian is a norn and I hated trying to do jumping puzzles on him. If you’re a tank and you’re playing PvP as a tank, being a Norn can be a huge advantage for your teammates. It means you are a bit more likely to be targeted while nearby squishies are less likely to be. Being big has its uses.

Norn warrior, easily dodged\countered

Posted by: Zonzai.2341

Zonzai.2341

PvP is almost never 1v1. When you get two or three characters in close proximity, spotting everything that an asura is doing isn’t as easy as spotting everything a norn is doing.

If you like norn and want to play a norn, fine. There’s nothing wrong with that but denying the fact that it is more difficult to see things that are smaller is silly. Bigger characters are just easier to spot quicker with fewer camera adjustments. And hammer, with it’s long animation times, is the weapon which most exemplifies this reality.

Elementalist is the coolest flashiest class in this game imo.
It’s also terribly mediocre.

Great post. I think that’s a good “bigger picture” perspective. They aren’t where they should be yet. When they are, I think they will be a great profession.

@Zonzai. A fanboy? Why because I disagree with someone? Really, if that’s the best you can do, keep on moving. I enjoy the way the elementalist plays and I don’t see any major problems outside of the already mentioned bugs and downed state.

I’m not going to do better because I’m not here to argue. I just call it like I see it. And the impression that I got from your posts in this thread is that you’re a fanboy. If that’s not you fine, but that’s how you’ve come off. I know, because I am an Anet fanboy.

From my experience in GW1 I feel confident saying that the elementalist will see continual small adjustments for a while. And if that doesn’t put the elementalist where Arenanet wants it, they will do a major revision like they did in GW1.

Arenanet has a plethora of metrics that they use to determine what a professions weaknesses are. Those metrics will help them determine what adjustments need to be made to which profession.

Threads like this can contain useful information that may help Arenanet identify the specifics of those weaknesses but they won’t be the determining factor for how or when adjustments are made to the elementalist. Mostly they just provide a way to vent frustration. And that’s important too.

Redscope, to do a burst build you have to sacrifice everything else. It isn’t like they are really instagib easy mode one button kills (despite my snarky comment). They will get fixed though. They’re obviously still too easy. But I’m guessing you didn’t play GW1 so you have no idea how serious Anet takes the meta game balance.

Asura animations are more difficult to see than norn are. If he’s running a hammer build with really big long animations, he will do better as an asura than a norn because it will be more difficult for enemies to anticipate and counter his attacks. These are facts, not opinions. If he changed to a different weapon (like you Slyther) it wouldn’t be as much of a problem.

Warrior insane damage

Zonzai.2341

Jjiinx, according to Anet, all characters should be capable of burst damage, whether or not they wear heavy armor. Part of the problem here is that you have a preconceived notion of what a character wearing heavy armor should be able to do. While that would hold true for other MMOs, it does not hold true for GW2. A warrior can be a glass cannon.

Warrior is a bad pvp class? I don’t think so. Some professions are imbalanced right now. This happens in the early life of MMO’s. When the various one button spamming builds get fixed the warrior will be fine.

People get too uptight about balance in the early life of a game. I know there used to be a time when balance was addressed before an MMO was released but with the increasing complexity of these games that day is long gone. Welcome to the paid beta age of MMOs.

How do you beat them without using a longbow? It’s not easy. Try fear me then bull’s rush when they turn away, then hit them with your hammer. Save backbreaker until you know it won’t miss, like when they are casting a spell, after hitting them with bull’s rush or after the stun on your third hammer strike. Make the most out of your hammer skills by timing them appropriately. Unless you are a norn, then you should reroll because you are ay too easy to anticipate and none of your attacks will ever connect.

I’m not going to tell people to learn to play because I think that’s a cop-out reply, but I will say that if you learn what works and what doesn’t, and take the time to learn how to build your character, you’ll do great in wvwvw or spvp.

Zonzai.2341

I don’t see elementalists ever being brought completely on par with the ease of say a warrior, but at some point they will be good enough to be worth the difficulty of playing one. We’re not there yet though. So I’m not totally satisfied yet.

I’m a GW2 fan but I’m no GW2 fanboy (maybe an Anet fanboy though if that makes sense). They have issues to work out and if you believe that they are totally fine in pve, well you’re wrong. Anet is probably already taking a look at their death to kill ratios and other metrics.

(edited by Zonzai.2341)

When is Elementalist going to be viable as dps in spvp?

in Elementalist

Posted by: Zonzai.2341

Zonzai.2341

It took anet over a year to fully fix elementalists’ problems in GW1 and then they nerfed them again shortly thereafter only finally fixing them another year later. But that was to completely bring them on par with everybody else. I suspect it will probably take at least three months before they start patching them to a place where they will be a reasonable choice for any form of PvP.

This is all assuming that they will move at the same speed in GW2 as they did in GW1. The up side is that everybody playing an ele in PvP now will be god like once they are actually brought up to snuff.

Zonzai.2341

As a GW1 player, Elementalist was my first choice for GW2. Necromancer was my second. Between the kitteny state of these two professions and the extreme dumbing down of the whole game overall, I’m more than a bit miffed that Anet hasn’t done anything to fix either of these professions.

Right now I’m switching between warrior and engineer. Warrior so I know what a profession in GW2 is supposed to be like and engineer so that I can actually be slightly challenged (not just by the many profession bugs). But I’m losing interest fast. If Anet doesn’t start making strides towards fixing either elementalist or necromancer in the next month I will probably uninstall GW2 and try it again next year, after they’ve gotten the elementalist or necromancer ready for release.

Are all the other ones you listed traited for extended range? No. But some of them can be. Yet you listed the engineers weapons under the assumption that they are traited for range. You really need to change that or else update the others you listed to there range while traited.

Please re-read my post. This time, read the whole thing.

As I said, I like the rifle but it absolutely IS NOT a ranged weapon. It’s really a melee weapon replacement for a class that doesn’t use any of the existing melee weapons. While I understand why Anet felt like doing this, this was a poor design decision.

Considering how hard hip shot hits for, engineer does just fine at max range. The weapon is one for control, and as such, does its job quite well.

I find it odd people rather warp the profession to their taste, rather than simply change professions to something that suits you more. The engineer fits a pretty unique niche with the rifle that no other profession really offers, and that’s how it supposed to be, a play-style of its own that sets the profession apart from others.

That’s not true. The engineer is intended as a ranged class according to Arenanet.
It is not an issue of wanting to be another class or expecting the class to be something that it isn’t intended to be.

in Engineer

Zonzai.2341

I wanted to throw my two copper in on this conversation. I feel like this post illustrates THE MAJOR WEAKNESS of the engineer: lack of range.

I really dig the engineer shotgun (I say shotgun because that’s clearly what it is conceptually). It really gives my character a tanky feel. And I love the knockback on it. What I see as the problem with the engineer shotgun is that it doesn’t have the ranged damage capacity to justify it’s use except against melee opponents.

If you want to do damage at range, dual pistols are really better, because they have more range overall. If you want ranged damage, grenades and pistols are still better. Why? Because of the five abilities that the rifle has, four of them don’t add any significant ranged damage.

The default attack is only as useful as any other default weapon attack. It adds ranged DPS but it’s not high enough to be the only long range DPS on the rifle. Net Shot has great range and utility but no damage. Blunderbuss has great damage but is only ever going to be used at 100 range, where it really counts. Overcharged shot is awesome but only has a range of 500 (traited), again making it a close range shot. That leaves just Jump Shot (800 traited) and it puts you in close range with the enemy.

As I said, I like the rifle but it absolutely IS NOT a ranged weapon. It’s really a melee weapon replacement for a class that doesn’t use any of the existing melee weapons. While I understand why Anet felt like doing this, I feel like it was a poor design decision.

To fight at range, the engineer really has two choices. First, they can use two pistols and second they can use a grenade kit. Flamethrower? Not long range. Full turret build? Too many inherent weaknesses, too many utility slots to equate to a main weapon’s DPS and a huge lack of utility in a class that relies on utility (and range).

THIS ILLUSTRATES MY POINT

Engineer Rifle: 2 1200 range abilities (a default attack and a 0 damage net gun), 1 800 range abilities and 2 500 range abilities (as coglin very rudely pointed out, these are as traited for range)

Warrior Rifle: 4 1200 range abilities
Warrior Longbow: 5 1200 range abilities
Elementalist Staff: 18 1200 range abilities
Guardian Staff: 3 1200 range abilities
Ranger Longbow: 4 1500 range abilities, 1 750 range ability
Ranger Shortbow: 4 1200 range abilities
Thief Shortbow: 1 1200 range ability, 4 900 range abilities

Engineer Pistol/Pistol: 4 1050 range abilities

The engineer has two options to compete at range, grenade or pistols. Pistols are good damage but at a reduced range and grenades are AOE (and likely to be nerfed soon). Personally, I play my engineer like a close range character. But it would be nice to have the option of becoming a ranged DPS class (even if low burst). Better yet, it would be nice if I could just make use of some of my utility at 1200 range. Best of all, would be awesome to not have to rely on my turrets to have 1200 range DPS. Grenades are nice but it would be nice to have a second choice for combat at max range (other than loading up on medium-low DPS, easily killed, immovable turrets).

Ranged combat is, ironically, the greatest weakness of the engineer class. And it doesn’t make a bit of sense to me.
