OP you need to get over your temper tantrum. You have done nothing but troll the forums complaining about something that you have no idea if it will happen.

It is getting old, and posters looking to have earnest conversations are being forced to wade through the waste of threads such as this.

If you have a problem with what you think will happen go troll your psychic friends line and stop trolling the forums.

I’m just havin my fun when I’m bored leveling my Guardian now. It’s not so much as a temper tantrum as much as it is more of a commentary. And if you’ve noticed, I do make it pretty obvious I have no idea what’s going to happen.

And hey, my last two posts had a decent sized response of fun and joy. YOU sir are being the Mr. Grumpy Pants. Learn to take a joke.

And hey, I’m actually hoping for more nerfs (no troll or joke intended at all, honest injun). I’m starting to sorta enjoy being the underdog here, it’s kinda fun and excellent watching all the brilliant Engineers here figure out ways around the issues we have, and I find it amazing that we’re still pushing this class to the limits.

Imagine the possibilities once we get all our much needed fixes and possible buffs.

But hey, if you have a problem with my “trolling” then just ignore me. Freedom of speech and all that jazz Mister Poopy Doo.

Wow, Coglin must be on vacation or something. You’re the first person who I’ve seen reply to him that he hasn’t tried to start a flame war with. (Or maybe he was just temp banned?)

And Im quite sure somewhere at ArenaNet somebody is ready to kill me if they ever had the chance.

You, me, every other sad engineer fanboy.

All right, Ladies and Gentlemen, last day to place your bets!

COME ON! DON’T BE SHY!

Throw in the last of your gold or maybe bet that Flamethrower Kit you guys are so found of, maybe you’ll win big tomorrow!

I’m going to go against the grain and say bombs. Anet has already said the want to nerf AoE. They’ve already nerfed grenades substantially and they will probably wait a while to see how that plays out. Resolving the flamethrower issues will certainly earn our OP butts another nerf, however, that issue is related to some of the pet pathing issues (targets on a different Z axis) so it will probably take a while to fix. So that really just leaves bombs and maybe the thumper turret but the thumper is so weak now it may as well not exist. So, bombs it is.

It wasn’t much of a balance patch, but that wasn’t ever said to happen anyway. Not til Feb/March. Instead we got some awesome bug fixes, which is pretty nifty.

Engineers don’t get buffs. It’s nerfs or gtfo. So, I’m thrilled we only got bug fixes. We dodged the bullet this patch =D

They’ll get back to you next time.

Can't Transmute New Armor

Right. Just found out about that.

That’s a crock. I have to spend MORE money in the gem store now? I really feel like ANet is pushing the gem store too hard. It just seems like they go out of their way to force it on me. So this has made me decide that I’m done spending money there.

I don’t have time to farm gold just to look good either though, so I guess I’ll just have a plain looking PvE toon. No real loss for me. Eventually I’ll put enough together to exchange for some gems anyway.

You seem to be suggesting that allowing people to explore different identities through a game is something that should be avoided or is harmful?

Straw man; this was clearly stated as something I don’t want to see. I am a consumer and that is my opinion, which I have a right to have, but which I do not have a right to impose on others. Nor do I care to impose them, or argue about them with you.

Also, are you suggeting that giving people the option to do this will hurt them?

Straw man; same as the first reply. It could potentially hurt my eyes. :p

You’ve hinted at worry about what people will think and feel if they saw someone doing this in game.

I probably wasn’t clear enough on that point. Cross-dressing is commonly associated with sexuality – whether or not it actually should be. The morality of it is not a factor for me. From that standpoint, I really don’t care. But many people – and many who are parents – do.

You say it’s 2013 but what does that really mean? The world is full of prejudices and prejudiced people. Half the people in the US (myself included) love that we have a black president, the other half would just as soon impeach him for being a socialist/illegal/muslim/black man/whatever. A few states are finally allowing gay marriage and every single one of those states will have a ballot measure to repeal that measure every voting cycle for the foreseeable future. For years and years black kids have been getting killed by guns in inner cities and CNN only cares when white kids get shot in the suburbs. Yes, it’s 2013. A period of change following a previous period of change, following a previous period of change… get back to me in 2033 and we’ll see if I’ve changed my mind on the issue.

More importantly than what anybody else thinks, Anet has to deal with the ESRB (whether or not their judgement is right). This game would likely have it’s parental rating changed in many countries if men were running around in women’s skirts (and it would probably be banned in Australia :p ). GW2, ultimately being a money-making device, will not be able to comply with this request regardless of anything else. On top of dealing with the ratings, the financial cost associated with modifying virtually every armor and likely having their ratings changes/facing potential public backlash to make a small group of players happy would be silly (not that they don’t appreciate you too). ANet is a company and they want to appeal to as many potential players as possible for each penny spent.

I know I wasn’t clear enough but I did not suggest that parents not liking the idea had anything to do with my feelings on the matter. Ratings boards are a fact of life, not an opinion. Whether or not they are just/right/wrong/needed/wanted/modern is irrelevant – they are what they are. Don’t think I’m right about the ratings change? That is debatable but I’m pretty sure I have a good grasp of the situation.

Your suggestion says give people the option to wear covered and less-covered clothing rather than the OP’s suggestion.

A suggestion which is only relevant if the OP is secretly making the request out of a feeling that skimpy armor for females is sexist. This post is a good method to make that point – it is only fair. I do support the option to have less revealing articles of clothing for those who (rightly) feel that women in skimpy armor without men in equally as skimpy armor is sexist. Personally, I don’t mind half naked dude or dudettes. I don’t play GW2 for them but they don’t bother me. However, I do think having more options is better.

TLDR I’m not arguing anything from a moral standpoint so please tell the straw men to stand down. I don’t want it. ANet would have to consider the potential ramifications. I support a cost-effective option for less-revealing clothing. Hope that clears it up.

Play an asura and a charr. They have the most enjoyable personal stories. I have a charr guardian, human necro and asura everything else. So I guess I have the opposite problem as you. I like the asura too much to play any other race.

Also, some charr heavy armor is really ugly but some of them are amazingly good. And weapons on your asura will be hard to see because they are so small. Though asura hammer and greatsword animations are great.

Race and gender equality for armors

in Suggestions

Zonzai.2341

No, just no. There are qualities of masculinity and femininity that do not translate well when the gender donning them is inverted. I don’t think ANet wants guys running around in halter tops and skirts. They want people to let their children play this game.

If you’re making the appeal (secretly) due to what you see as sexism, that’s a different issue. But I would rather have all skirts and halter tops removed from the game in that case. And as much as you may hate it, that’s what would happen.

My suggestion is this: Allow for alternate versions of certain revealing armors that cover more skin. You can then select which you want to view in the game menu. That way, prudes and nudes will be able to walk hand-in-hand throughout Tyria mutilating myriads of helpless foes (which is totally fine by the way).

Creating a Necro

So im in the process of making a necro and a page comes up asking me if i want to be a trickster, a skull, or ghostly wraiths necro. Im not sure which is the best or what suits me. the goal of this account is to be a minion master so, i was wondering if one of these choices would be the best suit.

Minions are unfortunately borked right now. They often do not attack. As with the engineer targeting bugs, a lot of these path-finding bugs happen when the target is not on the exact same Z plane as the player (or minion). Until ANet gets this issue resolved, you’re probably not going to be particularly “effective” as a minion master. You can make it work but you’ll definitely feel inferior to other necromancers. Just a heads up on that.

Weaknesses: Lacks range
Difficulty: Moderate
Fun Factor: Medium

Elementalist
Strengths: AoE, Extreme Mobility, Bunker Builds, WvW, Healing, Great combo fields

Fun Factor: Very High

Engineer
Strengths: Fun to play, Versatility, Great blast finishers
Weaknesses: Lacks strong builds, Weak meta game presence, Bugs
Difficulty: Very High
Fun Factor: Very High

Mesmer
Strengths: PvP, Great Burst, Strong CC, Teleport, Stealth
Weaknesses: Solo PvE
Difficulty: High
Fun Factor: Medium

Necromancer
Strengths: Survivability, AoE, Great combo fields
Weaknesses: Difficult to Burst, Bugged Pet Pathfinding, Low Mobility
Difficulty: Medium
Fun Factor: Moderate

Ranger
Strengths: Solo PvE, Traps
Weaknesses: Bugged Pet Pathfinding, Weak meta usefulness
Difficulty: Moderate
Fun Factor: Moderate

Thief
Strengths: PvP, Extreme Burst, Extreme Mobility, Stealth
Weaknesses: Punishes you for mistakes
Difficulty: Medium
Fun Factor: High

Warrior
Strengths: Solo PvE, Dungeon Tanking, Banners, Good Mobility
Weaknesses: Moderate PvP presence

The only two I would tell you to stay away from (for a main anyway) is Ranger and Engineer. Not because they are as bad as some people make them out to be but because they don’t really shine at doing anything in the meta. They can however be good enough to participate. Roll one as an alt.

Seems like both PvE and PvP will be affected. But dragon tooth even dough it does a lot of damage he has very slow fall and mobs easily avoid it.

I think ANet doing things upside down.

Thanks for the link. I liked this part. I hope they really start balancing the game now. I’m sick of waiting for them to get this show started.

Q: How close do you feel each class fulfill the class philosophy

  • We use one set of balance numbers for wvw, pve, and spvp. We do this because people get acclimated to characters – we want people to play a class in a certain situation and feel comfortable in another
  • Some classes are filling their roles, some are not
  • We are brining up the weaker builds to be on par with the good builds.
  • So yes they are but there are more work to be done.

I wonder if they realize that nerfing AoE instead of touching all the bugs, glitches, and exploits that players are actually bothered by is like adding the Lost Shores update instead of fixing all the things wrong with existing content. It just introduces more problems, pisses off your players, and requires more patches to fix later.

Whenever the topic comes up in game it’s always the same thing. Why are they adding new content instead of fixing bugs, fixing traits or reworking whatever profession someone believes is OP/UP? I have to agree. I’m at a loss to explain what they’re doing.

So yeah, imo the wrong thing isn’t that they can do such awesome things, but that a few classes (maybe) can’t do something like that.

Yeah, I can agree with this. The problem right now is that things seem so massively overpowered to a ranger, necro or engie who struggles to even be competitive and has no hope of ever finding a build like that. I keep saying it, ANet should be buffing the weaker professions right now. It should be priority one, but it isn’t.

Elewars vs Guildwars

Elementalists are OP because you can equip as a tank and pick up traits that give you back a good chunk of damage. Plus, they are fast as lightning (literally) on the battlefield making them either impossible to catch when they run, or run away from when you’re hurt.

Thieves are OP because they can splatter a single non-bunker opponent before that opponent knows what hit them. They can also use stealth to get out of a fight provided they don’t get buried under AoE.

Warriors are OP because they wear heavy armor, can build for high damage, and still have very good toughness, health, and two regens. Add in a whole pile of options on group buffs, and they are just awesomesauce with sprinkles on top.

Mesmers are OP because portal. Oh, and because they can stack so many different conditions on their target even when using crit or direct damage builds. They also have access to stealth which combined with clone spam makes them a freakin’ pain to target.

Guardians are OP because you can’t kill them. You also can’t run from them as they have both a pull and an immobilize in their weapons skills. They even have the audacity to make everyone around them harder to kill which makes all their buddies OP too.

Rangers are OP because 20,000 point AoE’s from 1500 away is a great way to ruin a bunch of people’s day. Or because they throw traps at people. Or because while you’re chasing the ranger in circles, his pet kitty is smapping you upside the head for 5k+ a shot.

Engineers are OP because if they weren’t, why would they keep getting nerfed? Grenades has been hit twice already and is likely looking at getting it again come the AoE nerf which is proof positive that engineers were the mostest best killers on the battlefield.

Necros are OP because…um…err…

While I agree with the intended sentiment of this post, I acknowledge that bunker eles need to have some sort of nerf. I doubt that AoE damage is the real culprit here though. More likely it is the combo of extreme mobility and extreme healing.

Necros, rangers and especially engineers are not really OP at anything though. To speak bluntly, the entire GW2 meta is terribly imbalanced. It’s actually one of the least balanced metas I’ve ever participated in. There are some builds that can negate entire groups (warriors soloing fractals), or attributes of a profession (thief initiative) that are so dominating it’s silly.

That said, the leveling is the best of any MMO. And WvW is perfectly fine as long as you are in a good group.

What truly baffles me personally, is that they choose to rebuild AoE skills, when condition damage is actually broken in itself.

Anet appears to have a backwards concept of wanting to play with balancing issues as a priority over fixing broken aspects.

I believe that a lot of the outrage over the AoE issue stems from people who, like you, think there are a lot of aspects of play that ANet ought to be fixing, and that AoE is not one of them.

I think so too. And I think we’re right. What’s the point of balancing a broken system? Fix the bugs then balance the game.

Unfortunately, what they are trying to do is hobble a piece of kitten system together to get tournaments and guild wars up and fully operational. They don’t see balance as important as they do, getting back all of the PvP elites that left after they realized how bad the GW2 meta is.

I don’t want to faceroll. I just have a minor neurological condition that makes management of a bunch of buttons difficult.

Engineer – lots of buttons because of kits
Elementalist – lots of buttons because of attunements
Necromancer – constant weapon swapping (if you want to be any good)
Thief – lots of fast button pressing
Ranger – regular weapon swapping + pet swapping and command buttons
Guardian – occasional need to swap weapons + 4 buttons for boons
Warrior – occasional need to swap weapons + 1 button for charged ability

Guardian is more useful than warrior in PvP situations. That’s the only reason I would recommend guardian; so you can do well in WvW. You can do well in WvW on a warrior but it requires a lot of weapon swapping and quick button pushes. Hope that helps.

In addition, there are so many bugs with broken mitigation/avoidance traits and abilities that I can’t for the life of me see how they can balance any damage, let alone single out AoE, without them being fixed first. Only today there was a red post about a broken dodge mechanic (been there for a long time) is going to be fixed in the the next patch….things like this have a DIRECT bearing on any AoE analysis that needs to be undertaken before they start hacking and slashing.

I am at a real loss…anyway I start chemo tomorrow so it will keep me occupied for a while….but I really do not like the thought of what “damage” will be done by “hasty simplistic” fixes that don’t address the real issue by the time I get back on.

I agree. I don’t understand why they are ignoring so many bugs in favor of nerfing the mediocre/weaker professions time after time. It’s mind-boggling to me and I’m beginning to doubt that the devs are actually playing the game much.

OP
The necro is (mostly) an attrition class. That is, you stay alive to kill. It just takes time because you need your conditions to work.

This is similar to my build at level 70 (I haven’t finished her yet, and the build is not perfect but I don’t care). I have played her for 68 hours. Not all of that time was spent leveling. That’s faster than I leveled my warrior by far.

I have completed the story with several characters and while I haven’t yet gotten all my 8 characters to level 80, I have been playing them enough to get a general feel, unlocking most of their skills and elites for pve and WvWvW.

Here is my list:
1. Thief
- unlike the other posters complained. Thief is fine for pve. Very easy to play and high survivability due superb mobility + superb downed state. So even if you get downed you can alone get back to fight without any armor repair bills. Thief is not meant to face tank your enemies and you can use other weapons besides dagger and pistol in pve.
- very linear and repetitive (boring) to play with too few viable options for the player
- reason #1 why people quit spvp or WvWvW
- thief burst damage should be reduced
- haste is too good, allowing so fast spike that reaction isn’t always possible
- heartseeker is currently spammable gap closer. It should have higher initiative cost and not autotarget / fly to enemy while inflicting huge damage
- steal / mug should do slightly less damage. The mechanic itself is fine
- cluster bomb is the most overpowered area attack skill in the game. Yes, even elementalists don’t have anything like it
- either change stealth into blocking (while being still visible) or make the stealth last a bit shorter time and in stealth characters should be able to move only half of the speed
- give thieves some support and utility e.g. shadow refuge is superb skill, but currently the only really good thief support skill. Maybe buff venom and trap skills and give thieves the ability to remove conditions from allies or remove a boon from the enemy?

2. Engineer
- By far the rarest character class in high level pve and WvWvW
- fun to play, but also requires more effort to play effectively than other other profession
- reason #1 to go away from keyboard / ragequit in pvp if you get an engineer in team.
- Engineer does less dps than any other profession, yet it is not versatile like Anet says it is. Fix: Engineer weapons should do more direct damage, perhaps benefit from the +power etc. stats of the main hand weapon?
- most traits are bugged/broken or underpowered. E.g. adrenal implant is a joke of a grandmaster trait, for example rangers get a minor trait called natural vigor, which does the same! Make the traits both useful and fix the bugs
- many weapon kits are also bugged or so quirky making them half-useless e.g. elixir gun doesn’t heal enough (increase the amount of healing, make it scale with healing power), elixir gun #2 misses 90% of the time against moving opponents. Med kit antidote doesn’t remove all conditions like it says in the description and pretty much useless if you get rooted (immobilize)
- many of the defensive abilities of engineer have too long cooldowns (60 s or so), reduce them to 30 s.
- too many random effects, not viable to competitive play
- Turrets are pretty much useless
- Elites are useless, besides the Supply crate

3. Necromancer
- probably the 2nd rarest class in high level pve and WvWvW
- very easy profession to play with high survivability due having death shroud, which is basically a 2nd health bar
- unlike the typical complaints seen in forums, necros can dish out good dps and burst with a power necro build (25 stacks vulnerability, dagger/dagger, axe/focus) also necro staff is a solid good long distance weapon.
- maybe give necros even more life steal, not by much, but 10% increase
- Some of the wells and other skills have too long cooldown
- Minions feel meh, basically like weaker versions of ranger’s pet. Some Ranger pets can tank better or inflict tons of different conditions. Does anybody find the minions useful besides taking up aggro in pve? Suggestion: give minions abilities to inflict some more conditions

Deniara

Excellent post. There is a lot of great insight into the professions in PvE in this. Though my thief is too low level for me to say you got them right, your synopsis of the engineer and necro is right on the money, so I’ll trust you on the thief too. Thanks for taking the time to post this.

I don’t know dude. I slaughter some kittens with my thief (poor kittens). Literally three or four heartseekers and any regular mob is dead. And that’s about the number of second the fights last too.

I love the thief’s shortbow. It hits three targets. All I have to do against a boss is spam the cripple every few seconds and use my utilities when they come up.

Granted, the thief not very forgiving of mistakes. But I duo’d the cave troll in Queensdale with a mesmer earlier today. I was level 15 with level 14 gear.

Laptop for GW2?

A 3610Qm CPU will bottleneck and drop below 30 fps in Big WvW battles as with all laptop and Desktop cpu’s at stock, whether u have noticed or been in a big enough battle is uncertain but if a Desktop CPU that is stronger cant manage to stay above 30 fps in said battles without a OC, then a laptop sure as hell cant.*

I sometimes run FRAPS for the FPS overlay. I’ve never actually seen it drop below 30ish. It ranges from around 30 to upwards of 100 but is most often at around 45. There are two reasons why I get such great FPS:

1.) In those rare instances where a lot of people are on screen at once, that 32GB of RAM and ultra fast RAID 0 SSDs make a huge difference in performance.

2.) The max screen resolution for the Alienware M17xR4 is 1600×900.

Between the high speed, high capacity memory and storage and the screen size, my GPU and CPU don’t have to work nearly as hard as yours do. That’s all.

The only thing I don’t agree with you on is GeForce GTX 590 (desktop) being better than GeForce GTX 680 (desktop). The power consumption of the 680 is roughly 70-100W lets then its counterpart. This is important because both have very similar performance results, however, due to the lower power consumption I would put the 680 above the 590. Also you’re missing the GTX 690

That’s just the list from notebookcheck.net. It isn’t my list. You’re right though.

You might have figured out already from the multiple mentions, but the Lenovo Y580 is widely regarded as the best bang for the buck gaming laptop right now. Quad core and nVidia 660m with 1080p screen for $800-$900 is tough to beat. Occasionally you can pick up refurbs from the Lenovo outlet store for around $600. (They tend to restock Thursday afternoon/evening if you want to camp it.)

You can get something with a better CPU and/or GPU, but you’ll pay out the nose for it.

Can the GPU be upgraded or is it built in to the mobo? Sounds like a good deal.

@SanctumSyte
That option does not appear. Just the ones I listed.

@LithePanther
I supposed I will have to.

Which class is in dire need of revision?

I like how Mesmers keep getting lumped in with Warriors and Guardians as top tier just because people can’t be bothered to learn how to defeat them in sPvP.

I don’t think warriors or guardians are considered top tier in sPvP.

Condition Damage gear

What we have here is a failure to communicate (in English). I have no idea what that dude said. But no, power, tough, vitality is not as much damage. Nobody said was. The problem with condi engineer is that you have virtually zero survivability after speccing everything into those conditions. That makes you a liability, not an asset. GW2 is a team game. If all you care about is zerging in WvW or WTF PWN-ing some noobs in PUGs, fine. It will do that.

Livestream 1/18 Engineer is fine?

And this is why Engineers who don’t play their Engineers should delete immediately. Not only do the devs think you’re “fine”, they’re using the fact that you’re waiting for them to get their act together against you! That engineer gathering dust in your character slot is being cited as proof by the devs that they don’t need to fix the class, ever!

If you aren’t playing your engi until it’s “fixed”, delete if you ever want to see it fixed.

Absolutely true. I never thought of it that way but you’re right. I deleted mine to make a thief anyway. Talk about a great profession! Nobody in this game should ever play anything but mesmer, thief or guardian (maybe the occassional warrior and ele) because they just kick so much kitten it’s stupid.

I can’t believe you put Guardian on the list!

While the warrior and elementalist do have builds that allow them to be OP under certain circumstances, guardians have had those since early on in the alpha. They have been kicking kitten longer than anybody else. Guardians are not that great in sPvP however, which is why I don’t mind that they are so great in PvE. But I’m talking about PvE in the original post. The difference in how easy it is to level my thief compared to my engineer, necromancer and even my warrior, is crazy. It’s a slaughterfest. I’m level 19 on my thief after 10 hours of playing. My guardian was about the same before I deleted him. Usually I get about one level per hour (even on my warrior).

Funny WvW idea: Massive Mine-field?

Neat idea. But don’t do it because ANet will nerf mines if you do.

In WvW I like to pop an elixer S and run into the zerg dropping as many bombs/grenades as possible then run away. Not quite the same thing but also very fun. A group of engines doing that within the main zerg would be hilarious too.

This is either an animation glitch and the shield is actually stopping or a mistake was made on ANets part. They’ll fix it eventually.
