Rifle or pistols for elixirs?

Most of the time DPS and especially DPS elixir builds run pistols. I’ve always preferred shotguns though (i.e. rifles).

Engineers are good when running with the zerg AoE tagging inexperienced players in WvW. That type of gameplay isn’t useful in any other situation though.

How are engineers endgame?

in Engineer

Zonzai.2341

Engineers have a couple of builds that are decent endgame but their real problem right now is that no matter what you can do acceptably well, somebody else can do better and with less effort. Needless to say that leaves you LFG in almost every situation. They can still run with the zerg and aoe tag really well. Not that that’s anything to be proud of.

I stated how I felt, asked if anyone else felt that way and if so, what they were doing instead of getting frustrated. That’s it. I didn’t go on a long rant about how gimped we are, I expressly stated that I love the class and it’s playstyle.

then say that next time, instead u rant about how much this class is apparently getting destroyed, and and whilst i may not be saying what u apparently wanted to hear i am simply replying to the post you left, on that note i think we all want to see some fixes rather then nerfs or buffs and id me more then happy to chat about the real issues involving the class

Anyone else feel this way? I’ve been playing less and less of the game since November, just wondering what other engis are doing. Shelving the character til another patch? Rolling new toons?

Looks to me like he did say it in the very first post. Maybe your fanboy blinders were on, and when you saw a negative comment about his personal experiences playing the engineer you quit comprehending what you were reading and replied with the same pat answer you always do to anybody who isn’t entirely satisfied with the class you feel obligated to defend because you chose it.

I’ll try and describe how the two classes play.

Elementalist: Good Damage, Swap, Good Damage, Swap, Good Damage, Dead…

Necromancer: Crap Damage, Crap Damage, Crap Damage, Crap Damage, Crap Damage, Almost Dead, Crap Damage, Crap Damage, Crap Damage, Almost Dead, Crap Damage, Crap Damage… (You get the point.)

Elementalists suck??

in Elementalist

Posted by: Zonzai.2341

Zonzai.2341

At level 80 Elementalists are an important part of setting up combo fields. The problem with the elementalist (despite what ANet claims) is that they are a part of the holy trinity in a game without a holy trinity. They are a high damage, low survivability class. And since ANet only really succeeded in eliminating the healing classes from the holy trinity, elementalists die a lot. Fortunately, that’s mostly only a problem during the leveling process. It just gives people the perception that the elementalist isn’t any good. When an elementalist can stand back and nuke as part of a group (which is often at level 80) they do very well.

I’m in the same boat as the OP. I’ve played every profession but the engineer is the only one that I absolutely love. I’m losing interest and I feel like I’m being punished for choosing to play an engineer. I really can’t see myself playing GW2 for much longer. I actually haven’t even played in about four weeks. It’s funny because ANet specifically made GW2 to be played longer than GW1 but even though I played GW1 for years, I can barely bring myself to play GW2 any more.

The real problem with the Engineer class.

Zonzai.2341

And the funny thing is that even though we are the jack of all trades, there’s already a jack of all trades class (the elementalist) that outperforms us.

I think that’s very true. Elementalists and engineers can’t both be the jack of all trades class. The engineer needs to specialize more in support. Their damage is insignificant already so it’s a good choice.

Warning: Do not roll an engineer

in Engineer

I think the OP has the gist of it right. It could have been put better but engineers are not a good choice for a first class.

Then again, if play an engineer for a while and when you do go play another class you will be very good at the game from having to play so well to succeed.

I bought an Alienware m17x with an I7-3610QM and a 7970m, installed two 240gig OCZ vertex IV SSDs in raid 0, upgraded to 32GB of ram and then added a 2TB HHD in the optical drive bay for just over 3k.

I do a lot of large file Photoshop work and I needed the extra RAM and fast SSDs on a mobile platform. As a side effect, it will tear through any video game out there on the highest settings (GW2 doesn’t even make it blink). If you drop the RAM upgrade that will save you a couple hundred bucks but I highly recommend the dual Vertex IVs in raid 0. The half second long Skyrim load screens and blistering fast windows/browser performance are worth the price. You might want the 680m (which is only a little better than the 7970m but twice the price). If you can swing it, 16GB of RAM is a noticeable improvement over 8GB when gaming too.

Right now is a great time to choose a gaming laptop. Mostly just because the 680m (a $522 upgrade) and 7970m (a $240) are as good as most desktop cards around $500 (or at least they were two months ago). Current desktop cards are only incremental improvements, but the current generation of laptop cards are massive improvements over their previous counterparts.

The controls have a very steep learning curve. I’m a guy, I’ve been playing MMOs (and video games in general) for a very long time and I have trouble with them too. I actually learned to play video games using WASD and it’s still tough to get into position in melee combat. I think a large part of it is that skill activation just feels sluggish.

Also, GW2 has a steep learning curve in general. I like it but I know it’s a big turn off for a lot of players. Some parts of the game are really cool and really well done but things like traits weren’t very well developed. Also, it depends on your profession. If you’re playing an elementalist, it’s a difficult game to play. But if you’re a thief, guardian or warrior you can just faceroll through half the game.

I hadn’t thought of it like that. That’s a good point. I doubt we will be seeing any new skills but I’d really like to see some of the existing skills changed to be more useful. It seems like shouts and banners specifically have a lot of potential to add to our group synergy (or lack of it).

Zonzai.2341

@KazNaka
We’ll have to disagree. On any other warrior build you’re probably right. But he’s running an offensive hammer build. That innately infers knockdowns and low mobility. The added mobility of bull’s charge is simply better for a hammer warrior than almost anything else because of how crucial having high mobility is when the crap hits the fan in a dungeon. And it has synergy with hammer-related traits. If he shouldn’t use bull’s charge because some bosses are immune to knockdowns then he may as well just not use a hammer at all.

Zonzai.2341

ANet has never really been big on giving good rewards. In GW1 most of the things I got from events were just stuff to sell. People coming from other games probably expect something different but here’s the deal, the event is optional. If you don’t do it the only thing you will really miss out on is a .004% chance of getting a new item skin or an endless tonic. And that’s really kind of a good thing.

Bull’s charge is as much about mobility as it is knockdown. It’s one of the most useful skills we have right now. It does two important things: it puts you in position and it adds to CC capacity. I can’t imagine not using it in an offensive hammer build.

Zonzai.2341

Interesting ideas. I think you’re right on with what the concept of the profession is: mobility and group synergy. The warrior certainly needs more of both of these. I think though, the best way to do this is to tweak the existing skills, especially the shouts and banners. Right now I almost never see anybody use a banner. And the shouts don’t really have any group synergy. Fixing those things will go a long ways toward putting the warrior where it needs to be – in the thick of it. One of the things you haven’t addressed is condition removal. Warriors really need a new way to do this.

I will say this in defense of what the warrior can already do. I run a hammer build with bull’s charge. It works well for both PvP and PvE. I have a decent amount of mobility and can add a lot to a group, compared to greatsword which has a bit more mobility and damage, but lacks CC. I feel like I bring something to the table that most other players don’t, CC. And it works very well in sPvP. I can very effectively engage and shut down a player. The difficult comes from not making myself the prime target. I have to wait until I can engage 1v1 or follow the thieves and mesmers’ targets to prevent getting taken out. If I do train a target, they are just dead.

Zonzai.2341

I think it’s a different sort of difficulty. The warrior is difficult to position. The elementalist is much easier to position but has survivability issues. In a big group the elementalist can really shine. The elementalist needs something to get them by when they aren’t in a big group though. They just don’t have it right now. More damage probably isn’t going to happen.

I think shortening the reuse times is the best thing to do. Elementalists have to use every ability at their disposal because of the recharge timers on them. Whereas pretty much every other profession can spam abilities with a relatively high frequency.

It is easier for most people to position the warrior than it is to memorize and understand every skill the elementalist has and know when to use them. If you are better at skill use than at positioning, good for you.

The warriors complaining about being underpowered are out of their small minds. They need some tweaks and some sPvP group support but that’s about it. Every profession needs some tweaking though. Warrior is a very solid profession. Sometimes I think that the people posting about how bad they are were guardian or thief transplants. Of course they’re not as good as the game’s biggest powerhouses. They’re actually somewhat balanced.

Part of it is, I think a plot by a few very loud individuals to prevent the nerfs they fear are coming. You’ll notice it’s the same handful of people posting about how bad the warrior is over and over again. On the elementalist forums, you’ll see a lot more names posting concerns for the profession.

FYI If any of you are having trouble in PvP on the warrior, try a hammer build. It’s very effective. There are several hammer builds posted in the warrior forums.

Zonzai.2341

Thanatos, my bad, I didn’t realize that the title of the thread was “How would you fix the warrior in sPvP?” I thought it covered all parts of the warrior and that we were all allowed to have an opinion. My many WvW 1v1 slaughters clearly don’t mean anything at all and I am inferior to your very loud mastery of the profession.

Varyag, if the warrior underperforms in sPvP, that clearly means ANet should rebuild the entire profession or at least make changes that will drastically alter it in nearly every way even in WvW and PvE. It’s ability to destroy in PvE and WvW are not part of the profession and don’t mean anything to any of the other players in the game. The only thing that matters is what you like to play.

/sarcasm off

The warrior needs tweaking and may need fixing in sPvP. It definitely needs more group support and I actually agree with some of your guys’ points. But can you make them without being jerks? The thread is about the warrior, not about the warrior in sPvP. In general (PvE/WvW/PvP as the OP clearly allows us to discuss) the warrior is one of the best professions in the game.

ANet is not going to implement any changes that drastically alter the warrior just because they need sPvP improvements and it’s not fair for you to suggest that because I’m not talking about sPvP specifically, that my opinion that it is a great profession is invalid. Don’t think I’m mad at you and please feel free to discuss the warrior in sPvP, but don’t be surprised when the 98% of players roll their eyes at you for suggesting that they are one of the game’s flawed classes.

1. Will you or will you not be buying black lion trading company or random number generation materials again?

No.

2. Did you buy them in the past?

No.

3. If you would not buy trading post material/gamble, would you support direct to buy weapon skins and what general price do you find acceptable from a business standpoint both as a customer and realizing that they must make money as a business?

Yes. I would buy them even if they were direct purchases. I liked the prices from GW1. The current prices are far too expensive.

4. Do you believe that future events will also be handled with random number generation to make profit based on limited time item acquisition?

Yes.

5. If you believe that the future events will be handled in the same manner, does this realization negatively effect your trust of Arena Net in regard to handling micro transactions for permanent content?

Hell yes.

6. Did you obtain a skin or whatever it is you were looking to get from the black lion trading chests? From the Mad King Chests?

I don’t gamble.

7. Have you bought any of the direct purchase, set priced halloween items. If so, will you be buying more?

No. I had originally planned to but I decided that I wouldn’t for three reasons.

First, they were much too expensive as are all current cash shop items (especially keys).

Second, after discovering the low drop rates on the new skins, I felt betrayed by ANet and worried that it was just a ploy to get money.

Third, I fear that if ANet succeeds with their current cash store business model other games will follow suit.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I would rather pay a subscription fee than support a system which is specifically designed to get as much money out of my pocket as possible. I want developers that love the game first and foremost, not developers that love money first and foremost. Unless ANet changes their current cash shop practices I will probably not purchase further ANet games simply because I cannot in good conscious support what I believe to be pure and simple greed.

The question gets asked every two minutes in LA, it requires a lengthy explanation and everything is already clearly laid out at various websites. It is far easier for you to minimize your window and spend 10 minutes reading what to do than it is for me to show every person who asks what to do.

I can understand people saying that the quest might be a little cryptic. You can be mad at ANet for not making up for your inability to look at the map and see the giant bright orange pumpkin, or read the text that explains what to do or whatever you messed up. You paid them money to turn your brain off and click buttons. But don’t blame me because ANet didn’t coddle you enough.
