I had no idea. That’s a big buff. I guess they aren’t garbage any more. I will try a MM build now.

No. Definitely not. There isn’t any class as forgiving as a guardian. So that is kind of a bad comparison. As long as you aren’t using grenades it isn’t really more unforgiving than any other class. You’ll have to consider your supply drops carefully though.

That is what Anet did in Guild wars 1 too. They made the ele too powerful and then nerfed it to crap. Then after about three expansions they finally got it balanced. I predicted they’d do the same thing this time around too. And it seems I was very unfortunately, correct.

Everything people have covered here is true. It needs some sort of damage reduction to be useful because it turns you into a target (as it should). It needs a lot more range and at the very least more damage than a grenade kit.

I played GW1 from beta to GW2 launch. Then I played GW2 for three months and uninstalled it. As others have pointed out, GW2 has nothing to do with the GW1 aside from being based lightly on the same lore. They didn’t market this game to GW1 players and didn’t have any intention of keeping us playing from day one. GW2 is first and foremost about making money and basically everything else that GW1 was against. It’s a shame but ANet lost a lot of loyal fans since this game came out. But then, why should they care? They also made a lot of money by cashing in on that loyalty.

After reading this and several other threads I can safely say that I have no intention of ever reinstalling the game.

i agree most loot is crap in the same time you kill the champ. you can kill a lot mobs and get more and better loot.

This is the truth of it. There’s no reason to kill a champ mob, ever. The only reason kill a vet is if it is in your way (or if it’s for a skill point). Neither has any better loot than a random mob.

I see alot of people agree and it’s just not me. I wonder when anet will do something about this.

I would like to ask Colin; Why do you think killing trash mobs is more important than killing veterans or champions?

If you don’t? Why is it the case?

The thing is if they give you a good drop rate the value of the Gem Store goes down because there will be less people “short-cutting” to get better gear. Why do you think the legendaries are so ridiculously hard to get? To make a more even progression? Kitten no, they’re that way make NCSoft more money.

We were told that we wouldn’t need to farm to have the best gear. What ANet really meant was that they thought we just didn’t need the best gear. I’ll go play a meta where I have an equal chance at success with everybody else instead. The only thing GW2 is good for is leveling alts.

You’re not alone Nalora. I’m back to GW1 already. It’s still a great game. All my friends who played GW1 are playing other games. My guild still has a bigger presence in GW1 than GW2. GW2 is just such a huge backstab because we’ve waited so long for it and ANet said all the right words the whole way through development. To be honest, the leveling process was great and WvW is decent but they cannot carry the game when the rest of the meta is nothing but epic grinding. Like you said…

I’m starting to suspect it’s less to do with bots now and more to do with their gem revenue. After all, the more loot/gold we make out there playing the game the less real money people will spend buying gold from them via gems.

That is exactly the reason. NCsoft has already stated that the GW2 gem store is “a large portion of it’s revenues.” I have a feeling that ANet is ultimately going to be unable to make both the publishers and players happy in regards to the gem store. They’re already taking a huge PR beating for it.

FIX: Remove better stats from the grind table. It’s as simple as that and ANet kitten well knows it. The problem is, the ANet people who don’t like grind seem to have been brainjacked by a few at ANet who love to grind harder than Bill Clinton at an intern convention.

Reducing RNG (and thus grind) cuts into ANet’s bottom line. There will never be an alternative way to get legendaries. They make way too much money from people playing the gem store for that to happen.

sounds like you need to move on to a different game that you might actually find enjoyable.

Agreed. A lot of us GW1 fans that didn’t like GW2 (meta) are back to playing GW1 again. It’s a much better game. But perhaps in a couple years GW2 will be good too.

Are you secretly a front for Bojangles? For that greasy KFC? And I must write that, this is not a situation that can be solved with a NERF.

Oh great, job. Now they’re going to nerf chickens! The one good loot drop in this game and you have to get it nerfed? Thanks. Don’t worry you’ll be headed back to those worthless chests soon since ANet couldn’t possibly bare the thought of someone making more than 1 gold per hour.

I don’t see any reason why an event champ shouldn’t drop a rare or several greens every time, plus coin. On a typical “swarm” event I’ll get 5-10 blues and 2-3 greens, maybe a rare. A bunch of coin, maybe some bags, some coin, a bunch of XP, some whites for salvage, etc. On a champ I’ll get some coin and a guaranteed blue. The swarm event is just as fast, and less dangerous.

Don’t worry, now that it’s been pointed out to them, ANet will be nerfing all swarm event drop rates. And the reason is they don’t want you making that kind of money should be pretty obvious; two words – gem store.

You people are clueless. Now they are gonna nerf the chickens!

If they NERF loot drops from mobs NO ONE will bother going to Lost Shore, and perhaps Orr itself, at all because it’s currently a buggy mess with little incentive. Champions drop NO loot and the temples won’t start. It’s really a situation where they would have to nerf dungeons and fractals first to move people back into the open world events or give up on them. Then, they will have taken so much away that you wonder if anyone will want to do ANYTHING.

And what makes you think that will stop them? These are the guys that nerf the engineer almost every patch. These are the guys that think spending 30 silver on a teleport is fair. These are the guys that think you should fight a twelve million HP boss for 15 minutes for 2 level 79 blues and a handful of whites.

Are you that nieve to think ANET dont already know where specific loot is being hoarded from… maybe you haven’t seen their own employees playing the game in the same re-spawn areas.
There are other reasons why ANET wants to create hive points in game…. at least if they do engage the nerfbat on such things it might make the game feel more balanced in its loot spread… heck it might even dissuade many of the endless lines of BOTS from camping Map areas.
I would much prefer a fun engaging MMO with challenges, quests, puzzles and exploration that rewards based on effort not based on zoning in at the end of a mass event to tag the dragon, then stand their mindlessly spamming 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 and waiting till its dead for a friendly res so you can loot the chest.

Anet knows. But if everybody else knows too, then it will stop. Though, I was hardly being serious. You should have taken the blue pill. The red one sent you back into the matrix where your brain is (apparently) being controlled by ANet bots.

I’ve said it before, no matter what lies you tell yourself the truth is that GW2 is the pin ball game of MMOs from 1-80 and the gear farmer extreme of MMO’s from then on.

You are correct in your assumption around the crux of my argument. You have bolded the correct statement. However, it has nothing to do with “my” definition of it, it’s simply the generally understood definition of it. Vertical progression is, after all, a common element in gaming and people have been discussing it under some label for years. And, it truly is simple. We are not dealing with a complex issue. We can simply consider it in the context of horizontal vs vertical progression. I ran across a good discussion of the issues a while back. Have a look:

http://taugrim.com/2012/04/19/why-games-should-scale-horizontally-instead-of-vertically/

I think there’s some truth to that article.

GW2 = primarily vertical progression
GW1 = primarily horizontal progression

GW2 = a good game that I played for several months
GW1 = a great game that I played for several years

DISCLAIMER: This is all my opinion. Yes, you can have a different opinion. No, I don’t give a flying kitten why your opinion is superior.

RNG not that random?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Zonzai.2341

Zonzai.2341

That being said, we’re trying to offset some of that random chance by implementing systems like our new laurel system (and other additions down the road) to help give players more opportunities to earn specific rewards as well over time. This gives the capacity for those exciting “jackpot” moments of getting a big reward, while also helping provide a more clear long term timeline when you can earn the same reward for those who don’t hit the moment-to-moment jackpot since for those who are extremely unlucky, it can be very frustrating.

Speaking of frustrating, the crap you guys take for the low RNG and exorbitant gem store prices has got to be as frustrating for you as the actual RNG and gem store is for us. How many players do you think you’ve lost over this? How many more are you willing to lose?

If the gem store is the future of free games, I want to pay a sub again. Please give me the option to pay a sub so that I don’t have to farm for gear with the best stats. You can have a B2P game with a sub right? Just give me plain looking gear with the best stats. I’ll kittening pay you to not have to farm in your non-farming game. It’s better than dropping a couple thousand dollars in the gem store to get what I want.

Kill 20,000 Elementals to get 250 lodestones and some other materials for this sword. That is repetitive.

Go onto this epic journey that test your skill to receive this reward. That should be ideal gameplay.

Exactly! Exactly! That’s what raids/dungeons are supposed to be for but instead, in GW2, you just have a miniscule chance at getting something worth a couple of gold to sell on the TP. It’s so frustrating! Why would I want to play content like that?

Reward vs. time invested is absolutely worthless. You could hit max level and equip max gear a different MMO in the same amount of time it would take you to equip full ascended and a couple of legendaries in GW2. And this is supposed to be the non-grindy MMO? It’s most grindy of them all – except that all that grind happens after you hit max level.

Anet’s logic with this totally blows my mind. Why do they have to have better stats? That’s supposed to be against everything ANet stands for.

In my opinion, this game requires too much grind

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Zonzai.2341

To be fair, level 1-80 is a blast…

…but then you hit the meta and grind, grind, grind ad infinitum. Once you get to 80 the only other choice is to roll an alt and level it 80. The up side is that there is enough content to level several alts without much repeating. And then pretty much the only reason to keep GW2 installed is for WvW, which is just a mindless zergfest devoid of all but the most basic tactics.

I guess when ANet said that they wanted to “appeal to the widest possible audience” they really meant “throw anybody with more than a half dozen braincells under the bus and appeal to the lowest common denominator.”

Or at least, that seems to have been their intention. Judging by this thread though, there are a lot more people with basic mental capacities than ANet anticipated. Or maybe they are the lowest common denominator? Who knows. They’re certainly not the same team that made GW1 though. But maybe they’ll pull a magic rabbit out of their hat this year and save the meta from sucking. I’m rambling now so I’ll just chill and quit insulting the almighty GW2 gods. I wonder which one is Grenth? Probably Colin. Jeff Strain was definitely Balthazar.

GW1 game play just can’t compare to how action-orientated this game is.

I don’t agree with you at all except this part of your post. I’ve even said that GW2 is like the pinball game of MMOs. I still feel that’s a good description. There’s bells and lights and all that stuff but it’s over too quickly. (And the devs are aware of that issue too.)

I think you misunderstand what we’re talking about here though. The ability to dodge and jump does not replace an eight-slot skill bar with hundreds of potential skills and dozens of drastically different builds (not to mention hundreds of similar builds). And ultimately, even in GW2 it is the builds that provide one with multiple ways to defeat an enemy. In GW2 you know what you’re facing by profession alone.

  • If you don’t support what ANet’s trying to do: Find a different game, it’s that simple.

Do you work for ANet? That seems to be their attitude too. Funny that it is so often directed at fans that have been with them for a half dozen years or so (i.e. GW1 players). Anyway, it doesn’t matter, I’m no longer an ANet fan boy but I don’t mean to sound as negative as I do. At any rate…

I am happily playing Mech Warrior Online and Firefall.

I don’t care that ANet decided not to appeal to me and turn GW2 into a cash cow and abandon the things that made GW1 great. I care that they told me they wouldn’t do that, that GW2 would have the “same great things”. I understand that they’re working on the PvP but I’m concerned that adding more maps will not be enough to draw back the great GvG teams of GW1. And I’m kind of bummed that ANet seems so willing to throw them under the buss in favor of a system that portends to “appeal to a wider audience” (which they seem to think are too stupid to handle more than a couple dozen skills).

I will contend that the major reason people aren’t interested in GW2 PvP is the same as the trend of this thread and every other GW1 vs. GW2 PvP thread – lack of viable build variety.

Gw2 pvp, is great fun and vastly different to Gw1. But after all is said and done, it really doesn’t hold a candle to the original in my eyes. It’s all down to two simple words that will get said over and over, build variety.

In GW 1 I saw mindblowing builds, but in GW2 there is no surprises, you always know what you will face

Well probably not. I wasn’t huge pvper in gw1 but I did play it quite a bit. I usually went Random Arena. The skill system made it so fun because I could use so many more unique builds. The skill system in this game is sort of restrictive.

Thing is, i loved gw1 pvp due to the amount of crazy builds you could come out with hundreds of skills at your disposal. Some of them worked, some of them didnt, and some were just cookies cutters i tried to tinker with – but regardless of the build, the constant variety and experimentation was what kept the game fresh and alive for me, even in its later years…

What kept me coming back for months was creating new builds and capping skills. GW2 doesn’t have that.

Too few builds available, many of these are a direct consequence of the lack of basic balance between professions ( HP difference too large between a warrior and an ele)

You wouldn’t see an Elementalist and think “he’s either a bunker staff or D/D’”, instead you’d get a different opponent every time in terms of the skills they are using and the ways they can play. There was so much more variety and customisation in GW1, I become bored of the skills and weapons I have in GW2, and therefore bored of the professions very, very quickly.

Everyone I game with has stopped playing GW2 for either one of two reasons. The PvP system is too simple and there is not much end game…

As much as I like GW2, this game has some of the most boring and simplistic pvp I’ve seen in any MMO.

Overall I’m happy with the PvP in GW2, but sometimes it gets kind of boring facing someone with the same build ( I do try to explore my options and try out different builds! )

I think the devs of GW1 did a pretty darned good job of balancing skills considering the depth of skills that were available to every player. You were only limited by your imagination.

New Dailies

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Zonzai.2341

Zonzai.2341

Personally, I dislike the new daily format.

I’m a completionist. Once I enter a zone, for the lack of a better term, I am off into the wilds. I tend to stay afield for a long while moving from quest to quest until I finish the zone.

The old dailies were completed in the background of my normal play routine. It was always a nice surprise to finish them but I never had to change my questing just to facilitate a game mechanic.

Now I have to choose between my regular gameplay and finishing the dailies. “but you don’t have to do them you say” Read line two. Throwing away the rewards is irritating.

I don’t want to have to go back to a lowbie zone just to find 5 events. I don’t want to have to go visit a specific vendor I have zero use for. I want to play the game instead of fight a mechanic of the game.

Dailies have become a nuisance; a very petty nuisance in execution but they have taken a great stride away from the simplicity of the previous methodology.

Well put. I think that sums it up for me. The original dailies were made to be performed during routine play. The new dailies are constructs requiring us to specifically try to finish them. I’m not sure why they thought this would be a good thing.

Zonzai, I would like you to keep in mind that it wasn’t until Factions that PvP in GW1 really took off.

I do agree that GW2 obviously is not anywhere close to where GW1 is right now. However, there is a lot of potential for PvP in this game. I’ve seen it in holiday events (not perfect, but definitely shows it’s possible).

ANet needs to spend a few months giving PvP some serious love. Even adding GvG alone would go A LONG way.

I agree that the potential is there. As I said, ANet can save it if they act quickly. But the main difference between GW1 PvP and GW2 PvP is the stark difference in build variety and depth. What kept me coming back for months was creating new builds and capping skills. GW2 doesn’t have that.

Zonzai.2341

Yes. I am happily playing Mech Warrior Online and Firefall.

In my mind, it is extremely unlikely that GW2 will reach the status of e-sport that GW1 did. I believe that there are three primary reasons for this.

  1. A large portion of the e-sport crowd either thought that GW2 would not be an e-sport and didn’t purchase it or have subsequently quit playing it after feeling it failed to deliver. So ANet is already working at a negative and they will need to attract back people that they let down or didn’t attract during development. This is often more difficult to do than to initially attract players. That said, it is buy to play so there is a chance that – if ANet acts fast enough – they can attract the e-sport players back.
  1. ArenaNet failed to realize that the most attractive aspect of GW1 to e-sportsmen was simplicity and tactical variety. In GW1 each profession was described as being a deck of cards like in Magic the Gathering. It was such a simple yet strategically deep system that it easily welcomed beginners while also providing deep and varied strategies. While GW2’s build system is grand compared to most MMO’s it is a shallow pond compared to the lake that was GW1.
  1. GW2 is a cash cow. It isn’t an e-sport. People notice things like this. The over-importance of the gem store makes people like us not want to play simply because it makes us think that that ANet isn’t here to provide a grand e-sport arena. They’re here to make money and that’s where their priorities lie. Note that during the transition from GW1 to GW2 many of the key members left ANet because they “were moving in another direction”. Those people were responsible for GW1’s focus on PvP.

I’m not saying that GW2 isn’t a good game. I enjoy it. I enjoy WvW. I just do not now nor at any time in the future see it becoming a legitimate e-sport on the scale of GW1. Certainly the potentially is (was) there but I think it is too late as ANet has already squandered it’s reputation with the community and almost entirely abandoned the advanced build system that originally attracted so many e-sportsmen to GW1.

The Engineer and its gameplay - Your Feedback

That amazes me, I posted in that thread. My opinion of the engineer is almost the complete opposite of the thief in every regard.

The thief is a very powerful profession that is deadly in good hands and fatal in poor hands. It punishes players for every mistake but rewards them moderately well for playing wisely. Most of the skills fit well with the thief both conceptually and in terms of synergy. It still needs improvements and fixes but I wish every other profession struck the balance of high-risk/high-reward playing that the thief has.

Applying that to the engineer, it would go like this…

The engineer is a very weak profession that is adequate in good hands and fatal in normal hands. It punishes players for every mistake but rewards them well for playing wisely. Most of the skills do not fit well both conceptually and in terms of synergy. It needs to be completely redesigned and I am grateful that no other profession suffers the imbalance of high-risk/low-reward playing that the engineer has.

@Aznhaxx

We’ve pretty much already gone over it. The engineer is very fun. And you can make an engineer work for you in certain situations (100nades in WvW) but a well-built equally played character of another profession is still superior, regardless of how much effort you put into building your engineer. I don’t know what you could disagree with. It’s not really a matter of opinion.

Nobody here wants to insult ANet just for the fun of it. We want this profession to be viable in every aspect of the game – just like ANet does. It isn’t currently. This thread is a good list of some of the problems with engineers.

The problem with engineer is that it just isn’t designed to succeed. As I like to say, it lacks synergy. The abilities do not work together. They do not allow for versatility. They are random. They are not effective. They are inferior. They are bugged. Now, while none of the engineers abilities fail in every way, most of them fail in some small way. When combined together, they create a failed whole – an ineffective profession.

Debating whether or not this is true, is ultimately pointless. In the end, ANet will redesign them and create something much more well-designed and synergistic. Just like they did with the professions that struggled in GW1.

@DODGING

There is never any reason to dodge at the very last millisecond before an attack strikes you. There is rarely ever any reason to dodge a normal attack. If you are worth a lick of salt you will save your endurance to dodge the big attacks/knockdowns/knockbacks/stuns/whatever – the things that matter. And you will do it way before the animation finishes, not at the very last moment.

Apparently, some people just have poor reflexes and frequently dodge at the last moment. On my thief I dodge multiple times per fight, sometimes with abilities other than dodge. Yet I still have to run into a group of mobs and dodge roll randomly to get this achievement? I don’t think it is teaching anybody good dodging skills. If anything it is teaching new players how to dodge incorrectly. At the very least, I’m being penalized for being proficient at dodging while people who can’t see the attacks coming are being rewarded.

Now, if you will excuse me, I have to go aggro and then dodge roll a half dozen random mobs to finish my daily… Like a good GW2 player.

Can't Transmute New Armor

in Players Helping Players

Well, if you don’t want to spend gold on gems, feel free wasting like 40h doing some ’’condtinent’’ and receiving better transmutations stones as reward.
Personally I’d rather spend 3.7g on 5 stones, but it’s only me.

That’s probably what I will do.

It’s not as if getting fine transmutation stones for free is hard… I had at least 20 before I had enough money for 1 piece of 80 armor, let alone a full set.

You must be a very lucky guy. I have two 80’s one 64 and one 34 and have never gotten a fine transmutation stone.

Fine transmutation stones can drop from black lion chests. If you complete a zone, there’s a chance of getting a key as a reward. You will also earn 3 black lion keys during your personal story between level 1-50.

I’ve not opened a lot of them. But I’ve not gotten any from the ones I’ve opened. For now I suspect it will be faster to just run AC a few times and have the gold to buy them. I complete maps to level my alts anyway, so maybe I’ll get some. Thanks.

Thank you for the suggestions everybody.

New Dailies

I’m technically considered a casual gamer (based on my play time per week). This is my personal experience with the new dailies.

Dodger: I dodge all the time on my thief. At least once per fight. After an hour of playing the game I was shocked to see that I had not finished the dodge achievement. This made me wonder if it was broken. So I did some testing. Mobs have long animations. I dodge when they build up their big attacks because I usually only have to dodge once or twice per fight. When I dodge these attacks it is at the beginning of the animation, not at the last second (usually). But the daily dodger only rewards you for dodging at the last moment. Additionally, all of my mobility abilities (other than the dodge mechanic) don’t seem to count as dodges even if timed properly.

Combo Fields: Spent 20 minutes getting a group to complete the combo field daily. Spent 20 minutes explaining to people what a combo field is. Spent 20 minutes trying to figure out how which combo fields “count” for the achievement and which ones (most it seems) don’t count. Spent 20 minutes trying to find another group (or at least one competent person) to do the combo daily with me before giving up.

Veterans: Spent ten minutes looking for a veteran. (I rarely kill them since they give poor rewards for the effort/risk involved.) Spent a few minutes killing a veteran. Spent a few more minutes killing another veteran trying to figure out if it was just a glitch that I didn’t get credit. Spent ten more minutes looking for another veteran and a few more minutes killing another veteran only to find out that killing veteran mobs didn’t count towards the veteran daily kill count.

I only have 2-3 hours to play each day (sometimes more on weekends if I’m not working). Part of my time each day used to be spent doing dailies. But now that they are taking so much longer, I will not be able to participate in them. I’m not going to cry about it. I’m just not going to even think about them. For me, they may as well have been removed from the game. Monthly achievements? Yeah right.

Thieves only dominate new/unsuspecting WvW players. Once people get used to fighting against them (e.g. not standing still, using AoE) they aren’t nearly as effective – then they’re more like a normal glass cannon that kills fast but dies fast.

WvW presents players with a huge area and they never know when a thief will strike. I think that it is a fun dynamic to have, take away that burst damage and you’ve ruined one of the most frightening aspects of WvW. I like that sensation.

So, I am against a nerf to thief damage. They should eat glass cannons for breakfast. I’m okay with that. They should frighten new players. It creates a degree of intensity you couldn’t get if a thief didn’t burst you down so fast. Also, it helps to balance the meta. Play a glass cannon and you know the risks. Risk number one being thieves and other glass cannons that get the jump on you.

Anything we do to make zergs more powerful will, in my opinion, be bad for the WvW meta. The upcoming AoE nerf could do that. However, the thief shortbow AoE (2) could stand to be changed. But single target burst damage shouldn’t. (I think the short bow will be the next nerf for thieves anyway. And that’s probably for the best.)

So much QQ in such short time lol…

Anything other GW2 is Jebus = QQ to some people. GW2 – as awesome as it may be – is not perfect.

Some of these dailies are going to be pretty tough to get. At least two of them don’t even work. But all you see is what you want to see.

And no, i didnt read the whole topic since i dont have so much time to waste for QQs.

Good thing you are omniscient then… Broken dailes are broken. Hard dailies are hard.

You cannot solo the kill combo daily which is kitten me off pretty hardcore. You can’t even do it with strangers, you HAVE to add people to a party to do it.

They made these achievements sound like a reason to come back to the game, but…yeah. No. This is really stupid.

Yeah, this and the crafting thing are a big turn off. The dailies have kept me coming back even when I wanted to quit. I’m not planning to do these two.

Wow, I hope this gets fixed soon. I’m hesitant to run a dungeon if that’s the case. My 80 necro in blues and greens had a hard enough time before this nerf. I can’t imagine being very effective now. Of course, if I were a guardian that would be a different story, but still.

The thief is a very powerful profession that is deadly in good hands and fatal in poor hands. It punishes players for every mistake but rewards them well for playing wisely. Most of the skills fit well with the thief both conceptually and in terms of synergy. It still needs improvements and fixes but I wish every other profession struck the balance of high-risk/high-reward playing that the thief has.

And let’s say we keep on being vocal about our issues and bugs. Based on how ArenaNet seems to “fix” and “buff” Engineers…this is what might happen.

Weapon Stats going over to Kits? Sure, but all Kits now do 50% less damage.

So um… we got the weapon stats patch. Did it nerf the damage on them? I’m downloading, I still don’t know.
