Yep as others have said it is to prevent zerging. If you are stuck and can’t be rezzed have your whole team jump off a cliff and respawn at the last checkpoint. The checkpoints are very frequent, they can even go to the next one and all die and you will appear at that one with them.
I don’t see the problem. The players at higher levels spent a significant amount of time to get there in order to get better rewards. If you want the better rewards then put in the time.
I agree! Best dungeon ever!
They are all perfectly designed, unique, the perfect length and rewarding. The puzzles are fun, the mechanics are challenging (maybe not at lvl 1, but more so at level 3)
If you did nothing but add more fractals from now on I would be perfectly content!
Lol… learn to research before you talk…
I made 250 with 1 “Donation Package”
Idk if I’d say “cheaper” but I’ve been finding a lot of rares and masterworks recently. I usually salvage em or melt em down into the forge for a chance of getting something great. I’ve been throwing them instead into the forge with the donation package, and using 3 rares, made 50 badges
blues can get you 6 or 7, and greens get me 10
Hmm I used 3 lvl 74 rares and it gave me 150 comms. Guess it might be a random amount.
You can make these in the MF using the new item that Miyani sells called “Donation Package”
So far i’ve been able to make one using 3 random prepared foods and it gives me 1 commendation. Costs about 4s per comm
Anyone find a cheaper/ more efficient way to make them?
It really wouldn’t be that bad if it wasn’t for the scroll… but if you need a scroll for each one there are 14 slots on your character =>
14*50 = 700 SP’s to get full infused FINE gear
Problem solved. I bought all the skins up to the gem price. Thanks though, go about 20 chests for cheaper then the gem store!
Since the patch i’ve done the grenth chain twice, the arah chain once, and the plinx chain twice. This amounts to:
3 Boss level npc’s
8 Champion level npc’s
3 Magnificent Chests
The loot I’ve gotten from them is:
5 white’s
8 blue’s
2 Green’s
Loot from the event chains in general has been severely nerfed. Previously the Grenth chain awared me a total of 3-4g, sometimes much more if I got an exotic drop. Those 2 runs I did both awarded me less then 1g in loot.
For reference I use ~220% MF gear during all event farming.
Umm isn’t this how ALL mini’s are acquired… through gambling luck or from the TP?
Broodmother, champ abom, and champ risen wizard at the gates of arah didn’t drop any loot for me.
Risen Priest of Grenth and a Champ Giant did drop loot but only whites.
i’m getting this too. Downloaded 5% of the patch then it just stopped downloading, Restarted the launcher and now I get this message every time.

I wonder if that “gift of ascension” will be used to make new legendary items, or if it will be used to upgrade existing exotic items, or if it will make entirely new ascended items.
Also a new way to get skill points and shards is awesome. I’m always running out of SP’s hopefully this will be a good supplement.
edit also the removal of WP zerging is going to significantly increase the demand for more defensive gear. Good thing I got one set already.
Well it sounds like some people will probably spam the level 1 dungeon if they just want to stock up on crystals. But it also sounds like you can get some pretty good loot the further in you go.
Yes because a free upgrade is totally what they were going for when they wanted to add progression and something to work towards.
Dungeon armor is for the looks, so it won’t be obsolete.
Hmm 2.5 million people bought the game….
~7000 posts complaining about the new system.
~3000 are people defending the new system
~2 posts per user in the thread
= ~2000 people actually complaining about the new system
= ~0.1% of the players
Yeah i’m gunna go ahead and say that is a minority. When you get 500,000 posts from individual users that this is a bad system then you might have something credible. Most people just don’t care enough to come to the forums because it isn’t a big deal to them, they are having fun in the game or they already left.
The entire 125 pages of this post is completely useless because 99% of the people in it have no idea what they are talking about.
They throw around words like “Gear Treadmill” and “Just like WoW” yet they have no actual concept of what these things mean or how they relate to the topic at hand.
Please go educate yourselves. Stop throwing a tantrum. Thank you Chris for posting that clarification. It is pretty much exactly what I have been saying would be the case for the last 50 pages but it is unfortunately falling on deaf ears.
The Mob somehow got hooked onto these buzz words that have no meaning to the discussion at hand and they continually shout them at you no matter what you try to say.
I noticed on the latest blog about the new update that under the infusions there was an infusion labeled as:
“Unused Defensive Infusion Slot”
This seems to me that the piece of armor in question is used for a “tank” role as it can not be made to hold any other infusions.
Does this mean we are going to see a move towards the traditional Tank, Healer and DPS roles from other MMOs?
I personally don’t think this is a good idea, the basic premise of this game was “play as you want” so that there would be no set roles. Has that changed?
3. The added stats on Ascended gear is NOT I repeat NOT a gear treadmill. A gear treadmill is adding in gear with significantly higher stats so you can clear content that is otherwise unclearable without said gear. This is not the case here. Ascended gear is in no way required to beat anything in the game. You can see 100% of the content in the game without ever getting ascended gear. Just like you can currently see 100% of the content in the game without getting exotic gear.
I was using suboptimal gear. I grinded money to get the best gear available. A patch came in and now the best gear available isn’t exotic it’s ascended. The treadmill just sent be back to step one : I am using suboptimal gear.
This is a treadmill.
How much would you pay for an exotic ring + gem before the patch? Around 2.5-3g for an exotic 80. Now that you know there’s a plain better ring available with the only infusion slot required to make the best use out of the new dungeon. How much are you ready to pay to get a 80 exotic ring?
So what you are saying is that there was already a gear treadmill in the game, you didn’t start with exotics, you had to grind and earn better gear.
Now there is new gear and you have to do the same thing… see nothing is changing, what you are defining as a gear treadmill is already in the game, it has been since launch, which is why it is crazy to freak out about it now that we are 2 months into the game.
You do realize the difference between walking on a sidewalk, and a treadmill right?
A journey begins, and then ends.
A treadmill causes you to work without ever going anywhere. With a set, defined gear progression – which ENDS permanently – we have a journey.
With a continuous stream of more powerful gear being added to the game, which will be required in order to continue engaging in the newest content – we have a treadmill.I’m sort of surprised that you are too stupid to understand that difference. Or is it that you just have no real response and want to try to play gotcha with people who are truly upset by this betrayal?
I’m sorry if I personally offended you, but if you go back and read my post I actually claimed that this new set of gear is to offset the journey between Exotic and Legendary. I see absolutely no evidence that they will continue to add higher tiers of gear after this. The blog post was quite clear, the “legendary wall” as they put it, discouraged a large % of the player base from playing the game. There was this HUGE jump in progression from the amount of work to get an exotic to the amount of work to get a legendary.
They are attempting to fix this problem by the introduction of Ascended gear which they will slowly add to the game. I have seen no reference, no hint of and no evidence for this prevailing theory that they are going to be adding a new tier of gear every 2 months from this point on. It seems from what evidence that we do have that this is a 1 time thing.
To put it in terms of your analogy, the sidewalk was too short for people, they made it longer. No treadmill just a longer sidewalk.
3. The added stats on Ascended gear is NOT I repeat NOT a gear treadmill. 1. The stat spread between Ascended and Exotic is almost the same as the stat spread between Rare and Exotic, 8%. It’s not 30% or 9000%, it is 8%, just like the difference between all the other tiers of gear.
The devs simply decided that exotic was too easy to get. There was not enough gear progression from Blue→Green→Yellow→Orange and then there was a HUUUUGGGGEEE gap between Orange→ Red.
They wanted players to have a more even flow in the game. So now they added a step between Orange→ Red, it now goes Orange→Pink→Red. The means everyone gets a more even progression and something to work towards.
2. This really doesn’t effect WvWvW. The whole point in WvW is that everyone is scaled to 80. Gear does make a difference, but rarely. After spending about 50 hours in WvW I can think of MAYBE 2 instances where my gear mattered, and even then it was mostly skill. However this should be a non-issue either way as there is a very simple fix. Make the badge armor in WvW ascended level and make it ONLY wearable in WvW. Problem solved.
3. The added stats on Ascended gear is NOT I repeat NOT a gear treadmill. A gear treadmill is adding in gear with significantly higher stats so you can clear content that is otherwise unclearable without said gear. This is not the case here. Just like you can currently see 100% of the content in the game without getting exotic gear.
4. Agony is a difficulty gate, not a content gate. I’m 99.999% sure that you will be able to see all 9 mini dungeons without any agony resist. The only thing agony is restricting is the higher difficulty levels of those same dungeons. This means that the “hardcore” people who want to go to extreme levels have something to work towards and a reason to do it, while people who just want to see the content can without having to worry about it at all.
Please take a deep breath and don’t panic, this is not the end of the world.
Well I don’t have any solid suggestions, but copying GW1 is certainly not the answer. The very very casual players who “played” GW1 for 5 years are not your typical MMO player. I bought all 3 expansions for GW1 and the original game. In 1 month I had beat all 4 campaigns on normal mode and most on hard, ground out enough plat to buy 30 points in the HoM, and had some reasonable success in PvP.
If that pathetic amount of content is what people wanted for GW2 then i’m very very glad that Anet is disagreeing with them and adding something more substantial.
However I am certainly still open to other options other then a gear treadmill (which has nothing to do with what they are currently adding to the game, read up on what a gear treadmill actually is. The Agony stat, not the ascended armor is what is a gear treadmill.)
The poll isn’t very expressive of how I feel. I have no problem with them adding a tier of gear higher then exotic to give some progression between exotic and legendary items.
I do have a problem with artificially gating content with the agony stat. This game was supposed to be about skill, and now that is completely out the window.
Sweet, these changes seem even cooler then I originally thought, thanks for the update Anet!
Ahh yes don’t let the door hit you all on the way out, I mean I completely understand that the game is ruined and unplayable because new items have +5 to a stat out of 80. I mean how will you ever be able to complete with our awesome +5 power?
It sounds like this is a one time thing. Exotics were too easy to get so they are adding another layer of progression between exotics and legendaries to help even things out. It is a welcome change in my book.
Why did the people who want this gear treadmill even buy GW2 in the first place? Almost every single game company is making an MMO like that for you now, why can’t you go to one of them and leave us to play a fun game?
Beautiful art, amazing combat system, awesome focus on sPvP, amazing WvWvW siege battles, Dynamic events, no traditional questing system… ect…
Most of the people I knew played for those reasons, no progression was the biggest turn off for most of them, they played in SPITE of that not Because of it.
Anet knows the numbers, we don’t, clearly they thought a change was needed, no progression was certainly the main complaint I saw for people leaving.
I have yet to see a credible argument against this new tier of gear. The only argument I’ve seen so far is that 5 levels of gear is some extreme limit and a 6th tier is magically gamebreaking.
I don’t think most people who are on here understand what a “gear treadmill” is. A conventional gear treadmill is when a certain level of gear is required to progress in the content. There has been no indication or even hint of this being the case. All current explorable mode dungeons and DE’s can currently be completed in level 80 blues. This means there is currently no gear treadmill in the game.
I have also seen absolutely no indication in ANY of the linked articles that this will become the case when adding the new tier of gear. If someone has a link that says new content will REQUIRE you to be in ascended gear I would love to see it. Until that time you are just misusing words and building strawman arguments.
*Note: saying that people will start saying that you need Ascended armor to run a certain dungeon is not a valid argument as that is already in the game. People already say you need to be level 80 and in exotics to run certain dungeons even though it is not required. This is in no way changed by replacing the word “exotic” with the word “ascended”
GW2 is an MMO and if it wants to stay competitive it needs some form of progression.
[Citation needed]
This is actually not the case. Stat progression is only needed to appease a certain kind of addicted player happy, who wants to be able to beat additional challenge by gaining additional avatar strength and is afraid of content that gets more difficult without being able to make it easier by additional stats.
Essentially, your argument is that Simons Quest is a better game than the original Castlevania, because progresssion.
I, and many other people, say nope.
Stat MMOs are simply one particular model, popularized by WoW. They are not the only model. Monocultures are bad.
Well apparently not enough people agree with you. If Anet thought the game was doing well and that progression wasn’t needed then they wouldn’t be adding it.
Clearly they are now attempting to attract players who are more progression oriented. Likely because they are significantly more likely to spend more money in the gem shop and there are significantly more of them then all these people who apparently don’t like progression. At least that is how I see it. If you can think of a different reason for this move then i’m all ears.
I learned my lesson last time. I spend $20 on keys and got crap. Now they are on the TP for <2g each. I’ll just wait and buy them if they are nice looking.
The sad part is that these people are turning on them for something that has been in the game since launch.
Did none of you notice the different tiers of gear before this?
Did you play Guild Wars 1? That had it too.
See, it’s not about tiers existing in general. It’s about the MAXIMUM level of gear not changing.
You are, essentially, missing the point. Come on, some more reading comprehension, please. It’s not hard.
Yes but GW1 wasn’t even an MMO. It had very little content and no progression.
GW2 is an MMO and if it wants to stay competitive it needs some form of progression. We are now finally getting that. Completing everything in the game in 1 month and having most of the players go back to WoW probably isn’t what Anet was hoping for.
gear treadmill in the game right now.
Nope, there isn’t. I never needed to get greens or yellows at 80, it was straight to full exotics for me.
But hey, you’re right. It’s nothing to be angry over, which is why I’m not angry. It’s just a reason to pick a different game. No big deal at all, after all, I picked a different game after skyrim as well.
Games aren’t religions, if one stops being fun, you pick another. Unless it’s Valkyrie Profile, of course, that game DOES count as religion
So your logic here is that… You ignored the other tiers of gear so they didn’t actually exist in your mind and that is ok.
But a hypothetical new tier of gear that you have never seen and know nothing about is evil and game breaking?
Well ok… not going to bother arguing with a statement like THAT.
Why did you play the game at all then? you do know that there are items with better stats then blues right? why didn’t you quit the game the first time a green item dropped for you?
It’s about max stats, obviously. The important part is a)they don’t change and b)are easy to reach.
Exotics fulfilled that.
If they change it, I’m simply out. Not a big deal, all it means no more reason for me to buy from the cash shop here. The money will go to good old games instead.
We could still have that. The problem was exotics were TOO east to obtain. It took 1 day to get a full set of exotics and then the game was essentially over, you had seen all the content and the only thing to do was grind the same event over and over again until you could get a better looking weapon.
They are replacing that mindless grind with a series of dungeons that allow you to infinitely progress and get a slower progression of the next tier of gear so you can progress even further down the infinite dungeon.
All the current content in the game can still be completed in exotics. You certainly aren’t losing anything. It just seems silly to me to quit if you are having fun in the current game when nothing about the current game is changing. The changes will mostly effect people who have done all the current content and want something new and harder to achieve.
I feel sorry for Anet. Their initial fanbase turn on them so easily.
The sad part is that these people are turning on them for something that has been in the game since launch.
Did none of you notice the different tiers of gear before this?
Did none of you notice the PvE stat boosters in the Gem Shop?
It’s like none of you have actually played the game you are now complaining about. Tiers of gear power have been here since the first week of beta, nothing is changing, they are just adding the next tier, it is literally no different then to what is already in the game.
If there are new items with better stats (I don’t know yet), a main reason I gave this game a chance is gone. Therefore, I would quit.
Not angry, though. I got my money’s worth, I simply would cease business with this game. Which’d be a shame, but in my case, I simply value “no statgrind” above any other issue in this game.
As much as I love jumping puzzles and the exploration love. This would be a dealbreaker.
Why did you play the game at all then? you do know that there are items with better stats then blues right? why didn’t you quit the game the first time a green item dropped for you?
I don’t understand the people flipping out over this… how is:
White<Blue<Green<Yellow<Orange< Ascended any different or worse then
White<Blue<Green<Yellow<Orange
There is no gear treadmill. A gear treadmill would be if you needed exotic armor to complete one tier of content and then you needed ascended gear to complete the next tier. This is not at all what is happening. You can still run all the content in the game in blues.
Are those less “Legendary” then the other ones?
Yes, of course. They’re 200g easier to get, thus less prestigious.
and yet last night in LA I saw 7 people in LA with Twilight, yet not one person with the “less” legendary items.
In fact I see more Twilight’s and Sunrise’s then I do any other weapon in the game.
No one robbed you of any gold. You hit the buy button, no one forced you to do that. It was your choice on how much research you did before buying it. Prices go up and down every day on every item in the game. Changes are made to balance things out every week. There is no price guarantee. You paid the price the item is currently worth to have it currently.
If you don’t want a legendary, armor, or gathering tools, what exactly do you need gold for?
Why do you people think that making precursors cheap makes legendaries less legendary? You guys do know that there are other weapons then Legend, Dawn and Dust right? There are 5-6 precursors that can be bought for like 10g.
Are those less “Legendary” then the other ones?
As far as I know, GW2 is the only MMO that doesn’t return your listing fee when the item sells.
However, all MMO’s have you lose the listing fee if you cancel the item, but the reason has little to do with economics, it is mostly there to stop people from using the TP as a free bank and making tons of useless listings.
lol at people wanting compensation. Here you were laughing at all the people who gambled 1000g on the MF and lost, but you were all smug because you got your pre-cursor.
Well guess what, you gambled that they wouldn’t become easier to get and YOU lost. Guess you guys know how it feels to the rest of us now.
35 ectos over the last 3 days here. Salvaged 25 rares using Mystic Salvage kit.
Rng is Rng, some days you are lucky some days you aren’t. You are however statistically more likely to think you are being cheated (nerfed) and come post about it if you have bad luck then you are if you are on the other side of the statistics.
Random is Random.
Maybe 50 sil an hour in Cursed Shore if I am lucky, but I am not since I can’t tag anything before it all dies while doing events. Usually its all dead while all I see on the screen is ‘invunerable’. I even play an ele which everyone says is the best tagger…no, the best taggers are melee who simply just spam 1 and 2 without even having to target; instant, 360 large dmg AoE that is spammable. My AoEs generally take 6 or more seconds to even begin and on long CDs.
sounds like you aren’t in a group. Make sure you are grouped with 4 other people if you want to get credit in large events. Also learn where the spawns originate from and when they spawn, it helps to know exactly when to start attacking. Once you do the event 200-300 times you should have it down to a science like many of the farmers there.
In before the close, like seriously.
Ahh yes the typical, Oh No I can’t think of a good rebuttal so I will just randomly make claims of censorship so I don’t have to think too hard, reply…
Cheaper mats meant people of all play styles could afford to play the game and have fun. I have yet to meet anyone who thought farming mats was an effective way of making money in this game. Even using the best farming locations for the highest price mat (T6 blood) you will only get 4-5 bloods an hour, netting you a total of 1g using the now inflated prices. This is less then you get just spam farming plinx for an hour. But now if you need 250 Bloods for a rare weapon, or crafting, or a legendary it will cost you 50g as opposed to the bot driven price of 6-7g. So that is an increase from 6 hours of farming plinx to 50 hours of farming plinx.
I for one would rather the bot price and time scheme over the non bot.
Well I was one of those people who went around reporting bots left and right and complaining about how they were ruining the game…
Turns out I was wrong, the lack of bots is what will be the ruin of the game. Prices for even the most basic materials have gone up 500-1000% since the bots vanished. I can’t afford to craft, I can’t afford to buy armor, I can’t afford to do pretty much anything since the bots were banned.
I hate to be saying this, but the game was better off when the bots made everything more affordable, I was having a lot more fun with the bots bringing in a steady supply of stuff, please bring them back.
Thanks for the update. This is basically what I’ve been telling people. I hope you continue to ban bots so the prices keep rising… I’ve already bought up all the low priced stuff for myself, so rise away!
People complained and complained about bots ruining the game. Well where do you think all those cheap mats came from? Bots who farmed them 24/7.
Well the bots are gone in a couple massive waves of banning, so the supply got destroyed so the prices are now skyrocketing. The mats are going back to their “true” price like they were in the first few weeks of the game before bots became a major problem.
i don’t want a legendary, and i have all the skills. they just pile up into the hundreds and have no use for me.
how does one get gold from them?
You make a rare weapon in the MF that requires 100+ SP’s and sell it on the TP
