Bug or intentional? - Spike Trap

Ranger spike trap gives 1second immobilize when it is traited with trappers expertise. Tooltip: Trap skills use ground targeting and are larger.

When untraited the spike trap doesn’t immobilize. Is this a bug?

Lightning Reflexes and Break Stun

aussieheals.6843

A stun is something that would totally make you unable to perform any action.
Immobilize is a SNARE. Two totally different things. You are right that when using lightning reflexes it uses the skill and keeps you in place, however, also not that it evades every attack while it is doing the animation. That is because a snare does not prevent you from activating skills. You can hit that, or signet of stone with the trait to make it affect you (if you are feeling very in danger in pvp). You can also use your 3rd shortbow skill to evade again after lightning reflxes.

Those are just a couple ways to avoid the damage withing breaking the cc. It is also worth mentioning using healing spring as your 6 skill will remove a condtion (including immobilize), which is why I always take it over other healing skills. Another solution (which also happens to be my favorite) would simply be to hit 5 if you’re wielding a shortbow to daze him out of 100b. If you wield a longbow simply knock them back.

These are just a few simple options to get out and avoid the damage.

Not to nitpick, but Immobilize is a “ROOT”, cripple and chill are “SNAREs”

Regardless, it is ‘movement impairing’.

Lightning Reflexes and Break Stun

aussieheals.6843

I agree 100%. Lightning Reflexes has needed to cleanse immobilize since release.

I think in earlier times, they were worried about there being too many escapes, but the state ranger is in now definitely isn’t in danger of being overpowered, particularly since the only strong ranger build in the PvP meta is the spirit build, which generally doesn’t take LR anyways.

One of the biggest issues is that immobilize received an enormous buff with the ability to stack. The ranger is already highly susceptible to immobilize and this fix is a simple solution to it. I just found it ironic how similar posts from over a year ago are to the posts of today (when it comes to ranger).

On the flip side of this you felt ‘apart’ of guild wars 1. Your character was important

You spent most of Prophecies, all of Factions, and quite a bit of Nightfall playing second fiddle to NPCs.

Pulling that sentence out of the paragraph almost takes it out of context, are you from CNN!? haha but seriously just because you might of been the side-kick doesn’t mean you didn’t feel like you meant something when you actually took down a challenging mob or kept players alive with sheer skill.

I guess this just doesn’t appease the masses and too me that’s a shame but we all have our opinions.

Too add to the problem is the necessary evil that is downscaling. I loved getting that feeling of destroying a mob you were repeatedly killed by at lower level. It gave you a great sense of progression. I mean in essence it would be the same way considering gear doesn’t scale but I couldn’t find any hard mobs while leveling.

Note: There are also an abundance of positives that come with downscalling that is why I called it a necessary evil. Also, I am not trying to attack gw2 I simply want to provide feedback from someone that gave it a go even though they are a dedicated pvp’r.

GW1 sucked and I only played it for the 30 HoM points rewards.

If you want to play it, it’s still there in all it’s glory.

Then you didn’t play it right. That game is by far more in depth. Even if you could only play human.

The fallacy here, and I see it all the time, is the depth automatically makes a game better. That’s not necessarily true. It doesn’t necessarily hurt a game, but it doesn’t necessarily make it better either.

The depth in Guild Wars 1 turned it into a strategy game. Something like magic the gathering (even the devs made that analogy). Build Wars. And if you like that type of game, that’s all well and good. But it’s still only an opinion.

As many people tried and walked away from Guild Wars 1 because of the depth, as there were people who were busy enjoying it. It wasn’t friendly to get into for a lot of people. It wasn’t accessible.

A lack of accessibility can certainly make a game better or worse. Guild Wars 2 is more accessible than Guild Wars 1 ever was, and that is another criteria by which to judge a game.

On the flip side of this you felt ‘apart’ of guild wars 1. Your character was important, I can’t help but feel detached from this games pve environment. Even the living world feels like just a biweekly intro scene into a basic console action game where no matter how much you try you cannot die. Or even worse, you can die because someone you cannot control or choose to fight by your side can’t stay out of an obvious bright red round circle.

I love the movement, I love the combat, I love the music and the sights. I just feel a disconnect. I hope season 2 fills this gap.

I was a low level & it was the day of a new living world content release. I had started getting the ball rolling on my main and the video release of the new content had me excited. My heart started to pump as I loaded into an intense war zone, eager for an epic battle with giant mobs involving intense game play with people screaming on vent. I was new, I was the under dog but ready to take my sharp reaction times built in pvp to carry me through.

I find a large group and i’m instantly invited to a party, the enormous mob spawns and we charge into battle!!

I’m dodging and casting skills as skillfully as I can, I haven’t been hit by anything yet & i’m pumping in the damage but something feels off. This enormous monster has paid me no attention, I decide to stand still, my heart rate lowers. I auto attack, achieving the same damage and still not being hit until eventually I even stop attacking. The mob goes down, I receive gold. At this decisive moment I realize, it doesn’t matter. It really doesn’t matter if I’m afk or going ham this thing is going to die and I’m going to get gold. I was so disappointed and haven’t pve’d since soley because there was a complete lack of a challenge in the content that I thought was supposed to be the new end game.

Now this obviously isn’t the true experience of difficult content in gw2 pve but how do you expect people that experience this to have motivation to see it through to the end.

In Guild Wars 1 I remember being motivated enough to go all the way to end game pve. I remember farming extremely hard areas and even positioning was critical. I remember being an asset to my group.

I just want that feeling back

[Concept] Guild Halls.. On Steroids

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: aussieheals.6843

aussieheals.6843

The Concept
Imagine guild halls .. on steroids. The hall is the home of your guild and meaningful to you because from nothing, you collectively designed and specked it out with fortifications, defensive capabilities and gave it that homely feeling with npcs and decorative s.

It could be a simple hall, an air ship, a small island etc, the options are endless but only limited by your guild size.

The Twist
Now imagine that hall, your home, thrown into a competitive game mode of all or nothing where victor takes the spoils & the defeated are left with a repair bill.

In this game mode there isn’t a win or lose scenario. Much like a dynamic pve event if the offending raid might not be able to take out the guild lord but might be able to complete a side objective of breaking into the armory (guild bank). Whereas the defender could choose to simply defend their keep or push forward and wipe out the entire offensive taking their materials and shinnies.

The Reason
The main reason is to add a game type to sPvP that would attract any player in the game no matter what section you focus in. It would attract to both male and female population.

Taking the best from spvp and wvw, is this game mode hybrid where everyone is on an even playing field in regards to armor. The combat is meaningful and it naturally brings people together. The risks are great but the rewards are too tempting to not resist.

The Details
Guild Queue sizes range from 10 man guilds to 500 man guilds.
500 man guilds have full access to all build options whereas 10 man guilds are limited in build upgrade options. To keep games not being impossible i.e. you don’t want an impossibly strong keep where their is no way 10 man could even make a dent.

You could make things over the top dynamic by giving the offenders more than one way to break in, i.e. Digging under, the usual through the front gate, trogan horse mechanics etc etc.

To keep things from being too much work the ‘inner sanctum’ of the guild halls wont need repairs after battles but the external fortifications and offensive equipment will.

These are EXTREME concept ideas, I would just love to get a general feeling of the idea from the population & would love to add some of your improvements to the idea to the list.

I feel a lot of the mechanics would already exist in the guild wars 2 engine and thus not be an impossible project (not saying it isn’t extremely complex).

I did not think this would ever happen, but… for once I do agree with Karla. Ladders, seasons, rewards are all meaningless unless you have a good base design to work on. Talking about ladders, leagues and seasons for GW2 spvp is like building 3rd floor of the house with 1st and 2nd missing… Is it just me who finds that a little f…ing weird?

When you want to build your dream home it’s very true that the foundations need to be laid first. But you don’t design your house after they are ready, you prepare early. Keeping this mind please read the following:

The argument would make sense if the PvP team focused on balance and design. However, this isn’t the case. The skills and balance team are working on those foundations you mention i.e , traits, amulets, large scale skill balance etc. The PvP team work on leagues, structure, game modes etc.

All signs point to the new content being released at around the same time so get constructive and design your house now!

yea… too good to be true

I designed this thread keeping a few key things in mind:

a) Wherever possible Arena Net seem to choose the simple options over complete design reworks. I have seen quite a few great ideas that are potentially too good to be true due to them being very complex changes even when the idea sounds simple.

b) Functionality improvements tend to be looked at before raw damage changes as sometimes it’s not always the damage that is the issue.

The point I’m trying to make is, when planning these changes I did it with high hopes that it wasn’t actually over the top but rather stupid simple so they wouldn’t be ‘too good to be true’.

Pets

Due to this being a rushed patch we are unable to completely fix the mechanic in time. To temporarily resolve the issue we have decided on the following:

A) When pets are activated they spawn with a 5 second swiftness buff.
B) When pets are activated they spawn with a 4 second quickness buff.
C) These new buffs are not affected by traits, gear, or any other duration stacking item or trait.

• Reasoning – Currently when a pet is activated it remains idle for up to two seconds, this quick temporary fix will ease the issue by allowing the pet to ‘catch up’ to where it should have been or what is should have been doing.

Damage – Pet damage has been increased by 10% across the board.

• Reasoning – The damage is currently underwhelming and we would like to add a slice or damage at a time to test the waters.

Survivability – Pets now have ‘resilience’, this causes them to take 70% less aoe damage. Any conditions or damage transferred to the pet from the ranger is now also reduced by 50%.

• Reasoning – It is skilful play to hamstring a ranger by killing his pet, it is not skilful play accidentally killing the pet. By reducing the damage from transferred conditions we were able to bring a higher level or survivability to the pet without making them un-killable from targeted damage.

Utilities

Water Spirits (Aqua Surge) – Now cleanses 3 conditions.

• Reasoning – A step toward active conditions removal for rangers.

Guard – Now grants the pet 3 stacks of might.

• Reasoning – To give the ranger a reason to use the skill aside from the shout mastery trait line.

Lightning reflexes – Now cleanses immobilize.

• Reasoning – To allow the ranger actively react to imminent burst

Entangle – Recharge reduced to 120seconds from 150 seconds
• Reasoning – It was simply too long

Rampage as one – During this skill the ranger is immune to immobilize.
• Reasoning – Ever tried to stop the hulk with a rope?

Spirit of Nature – Healing % bug fix. – Nature’s Renewal now revives players with 25% less hp.
• Reasoning – To bring the elite in line with others.

aussieheals.6843

Our focus of this patch is to bring the rangers survivability up and to allow the ranger to actively respond to threats. Due to the lure of rangers we have decided to grant them unique access to a small portion of immobilize immunity and active removal as their nature background has taught them a thing or two about coming unstuck.

Pets are a major concern of ours and we have decided to go with a ‘quick fix’ option I’m sure you will enjoy

Note – This patch is a maintenance patch and therefore won’t include any major mechanic changes or trait changes.

Weapons:

Greatsword

Hilt Bash – This skill is now has a short lunge animation increasing its distance.

• Reasoning – Activating at the current range is too RNG due to slow animation speed and any hint of in game lag.

Maul – We have decided to add the bleed stacks back to this weapon to open up hybrid build options. The stacks have been increased to 5 and the vulnerability stacks will also remain.

Longbow

Hunters shot – Fixed a bug causing the ranger to not face their target while casting this skill during immobilize.

Point blank shot – Fixed a bug causing your ranger to not face your target while casting this skill during immobilize.

• Reasoning: One of the rangers biggest vulnerabilities right now is immobilize. Allowing the player to actively and skilfully respond to threats is our aim of this patch.

Barrage – The cast time has been reduced to 2seconds from 2 & ¾ seconds.

• Reasoning: To bring this skill back in line after significantly reducing the damage

Sword

Slash – Cast time increased to ¾ of a second from 2/4 a second. Pounce has been reduced to 2/4 from ¾ of a second

• Reasoning: Currently it is difficult for players to free themselves from movement during the sword combo. Swapping the cast times allows us to give the ranger more time to cancel movement without affecting the damage output.

Axe

Path of scars – (sPvP only) – Range reduced by 33%.

• Reasoning: The returning strike is currently too difficult to land on a highly mobile target. Reducing the range effectively decreases the return time and therefore increasing the chances of a knock down. This is a pvp only skill change as it would unnecessarily nerf the weapon for pve.

Whirling Defense – Cast time reduced to 3 & 2/4 seconds from 5 & 2/4 seconds.

• Reasoning: The ranger is left quite vulnerable during this animation, reducing the cast time will upkeep its effectiveness while reducing the risk.

The Ranger is a lie

in Ranger

Posted by: aussieheals.6843

The thing that really throws me off is the balance philosophy is to ‘shave’ rather than nuke, so to speak. How is a direct damage nerf of 30% a shave? & addition to this was the jag crit chance reduction from 100% to something around 30% – a 70% reduction.

Another example is the quickness we used to gain from pet swap. It got nerfed from a 5point investment in a bad trait line to a 30point investment in the same bad trait line.

It feel like a solution couldn’t be found so the easiest thing is to put it somewhere no1 will use it.

I love the idea about ‘shaving’ by this is by far not the experience the ranger has been dealing with.

I’m not too sure about either of these points. ‘Expanding’ the origial game with premium is available on the gem store and as mentioned the amount of content that is already on the books to be shipped out is definitely large enough to class as an expansion.

I’m no marketing guru but it would seem like the best choice to accompany a large marketing push would be an expansion.

It would be refreshing to see positive reinforcement;

Something like 5 silver for voting for players who were good sports on your team, and 15silver to the person with most votes.

Kind of like ‘Man of the match’

I think it’s safe to say almost every single person who has ever purchased this game has realized it’s potential which means every time a big release is announced, players flock back.

When they do return, one of the biggest hurdles is maintaining player retention.

We currently have a system which is to help promote the game by allowing a select few to live stream the top matches, this is known as the ASP:

“The Authorized Shoutcaster Program is a program in which community shoutcasters are notified of high ranking matches and are invited to enter a match as a live spectator.”

Guild Wars 1 had a system similar in nature but open to the public. Top matches were actually recorded and you could watch them as soon as they finished (From memory).

This meant that new or returning players actually had a chance to watch some top end game play and learn, rotation, meta builds, team play etc before jumping into a hot join and being slaughtered by experienced players. This ‘in theory’ should ease that player back into the game and therefore keeping them around longer.

Obviously the limitation applies to the amount of spectators into a match at the moment but how much resources does it take to record something like this? Is it something that we could possibly see in the future?

& to the players, from your Guild Wars 1 experience did observing matches teach you anything?

If I were you I would wait, the ranger class has just been selected for a major overhaul and builds could change drastically in the next month or two.

Is this a bug or working as intended
