Everyone except anet realizes there is a problem here. That or they just refuse to do something about it.

People are missing the point. Originally they stated they didn’t want gear to be a timegate issue and that their game would be different in that people weren’t thinking about gear all the time or grinding or going to the next piece they would be playing the game enjoying it. Well here we are now 1 year later exactly polar oposite of where they said they’d take this game. This has become end game no different than the run of the mill gear grind games out today aside from the leveling gathering and how people don’t have to compete for loot this game is no different than all the rest, not even in the ways they originally intended!
I have a long memory when it comes to these promises and I recall when they originally said that the gear would have no stats. Remember that? yeah…
Technically, it is not time gated. You and many others are missing that point. All the items that are time gated to an individual person can be purchased on the TP (dowels and planks).
The reality is, it is gold gated. If you have enough of it, you can buy all the dowels and planks. You can buy enough exotics (or use the ones you crafted) too get Dark Matter. Run some dungeons and world events and you have yourself an Ascended weapon. So, all it really takes is a little time (albeit some grind) and lots of gold.
Hmm “little”. You need 500 of each of those things. 17 temple events and 25 dungeon runs.
Anyway who said the time gating had anything to do with fun?
They have pretty much said why it is in place. One mentioned directly and one indirectly. The direct mention is to have high value craftable items. That is one of the stated goals anyway. I think having the weapons being account bound and making the acquisition of the materials for the vision crystal has pretty much wrecked that. Probably the only reason they are maintaining value is speculation for armor crafting and the raw material cost.
The indirect reason is that they wanted gearing to require a certain amount of time and time gating is pretty much the only guaranteed way to get something consistent from there.
OK, “little” is relative. I don’t mean you can easily do it in one day (although you technically could if you spend all day farming). But, it isn’t like it takes weeks worth of time to gather the fragments and ore.
So there one goal of high value items was a lie or people misinterpreted it because there is no market for ascended weapons as they are all account bound.
Secondly, it isn’t really time gated in the sense that it will take you “x” number of days because that is how many one-a-day items you have to craft. You can buy all that stuff on the TP. So the time gating only becomes how much time you are willing to spend running dungeons and world events/JP’s. Also, how much gold you have.
I don’t really think it ruins any fun of the game for me, I just think the implementation is/was silly. They should have either made it so that you could sell the weapons after crafting them or made it so all the mats are available on the TP. OR, they should have not allowed people to sell the ingots and planks, which would have kept them true time-gated items.
Ecto salvage rates were ninja nerfed on the 20th. I know because I salvaged 25 rares and got 7 ectos out of it, which has never, ever happened before. I allways got 1-3 ectos 90% of the time, so salvagin them was a profit. Ever since the 20th patch, It’s allways a loss to salvage it. I salvage 5-6 rares a day and I haven’t gotten 3 ectos out of it in days, I’m always loosing money from salvaging them.
It was nerfed, believe it.
Then you’ve been lucky all the time. I’ve neved had as much as 1-3 ectos 90% of the time, i have around 0.75 ecto per gold (using master kit, not black lion ones)
Unfortunately, it’s called RNG. Some have the luck, some don’t.
I am actually surprised it isn’t cheaper at the moment. There is just so much of it coming from all over the place.
If you pay 200g, you are doing something wrong.
You propably follow a mediocre guide on the internet that everybody else uses and dont gather stuff yourself.
The 200g figure also doesnt subtract the money you get back from selling the stuff you crafted.
If you know what you are doing and know the market, you can even make a profit while leveling from 400 to 500.
Pretty sure it is utterly impossible to make a profit.
After taking in to account the cost of mats (which you should be doing) I also can’t see making much of a profit if any. Sure, selling crafted exotics would be pure profit if you gathered all the mats yourself, but so would selling those mats as well.
You can scrape around discovering potion recipes and 80 rares and so on but you might as well bite the bullet and discover the exotic weapons. If you’re in the business of making ascended weapons then you should have the means to buy exotic components. You’ll need to salvage ten exotic items for one of the ascended components anyway so if your crafted exotics have no TP value you can salvage those.
You will probably only get to 460 at most from crafting the T7 materials. They just don’t give enough crafting xp each time. Plan to get from 460 to 500 with exotics and if you need less then it’s a bonus.
I’ve gotten to like 469 or so from refining t7 mats and it still isn’t entirely greyed out yet. I think I am going to get to 475 by the time it runs out (just a guess).

You guys saying not so convert laurels have to realize that while laurels are a time limited supply, they also have limited use. If you only roll one character and collect all of the laurels, you’ll have far more than you need, so once you have all of your ascended trinkets you either convert them to something of economic value or buy little pleasantries like the minis.
That describes me perfectly. I really only have one char at the moment.
People are suggesting not to convert because gold is so easy to acquire in this game. Why convert a time gated currency to one you can spend the day farming?
It’s not like you can’t just do your dailies and monthlies and get more laurels, but what if tomorrow anet decides that precursor crafting will require 300 laurels? I am NOT saying that is going to happen, but you never know. Then people will be all kittened about spending their laurels.
That guide has you crafting all exotics to get to level 500 which is not a good idea.
You can do 400-425 by refining t6 mats and you can do 450-475 by refining t7 mats.
I actually like it. I think making the ectoplasm refinement time-gated and account bound was a good idea (spirit wood and Deldrimor are account bound, right? or did I make that up?). It seems designed to ease in the new tier and prevent pay-to-win gaming. True, dark matter completely destroys the latter aspect, but that has nothing to do with the time gate – rather, it’s the account bound part. I wouldn’t mind seeing the limit raised to perhaps two per day, especially if it got paired with either lower resource cost and/or bank limits raised to 500 per stack, but generally I think it’s working well.
They are not account bound. You can sell em on the TP. So there is no true time gating. If you have enough gold and time you can farm all the mats pretty easily and buy whatever else you need. Granted, the first few days the ingots and planks were VERY expensive, but now they are about the same cost as it would take to make one.
This has happened to me too! I was at 99% map completion on a character for MONTHS, even though I had completed the whole dang map. Eventually, I went to a section of the map and found that a number of waypoints I had already discovered were fogged and undiscovered all over again. This was a zone I had finished and gotten the reward chest for, that for no reason at all, I lost exploration on. When I re-explored the waypoints, I got my 100%
They do add new areas and wp’s to the map when they add guild challenges and jumping puzzles or other things. That is totally different from what the OP is referring to.
I have almost 300 and would never trade them for gold. You never know what anet will release down the road. I will be ready for that day if it ever comes. :P
I can’t imagine it ever going up from where it is. It is the most common mat found in the higher level areas and that is where almost everyone is all the time.
Back then everyone was new to the game, so it wasn’t farmed as often. Plus, it is a very common item received from salvaging items and everyone is doing that right now as well for luck.
We certainly don’t need a trade system where everyone is spamming map chat all the time.
Also, what Wanze said ^^
/Thread
What will they do next? The armor will most likely require the blood of a virgin, the holy grail, an unmarked one thousand dollar bill, the hat of Baron Samedi, and the Chachapoyan Fertility Idol from the first Indiana Jones movie.
I suppose we could always go back to the bad old days of “Kill 10 Rats”. At least then the casual players could get their hands on this gear too. As things stand now, no one who only plays an hour or two per day is going to being to able to farm the mats needed for even one Ascended weapon, never mind the armor that is coming.
I can see what’s happening in our guild. Those guys are moving on.
I don’t care for the time gating either, especially since you aren’t truly being time gated since you can by those mats off the TP.
That being said, your statement is ridiculous. I play a couple hours a day and the only thing I am missing is the fragments because I have just been too lazy to run enough dungeons. I have enough of all the other mats to make more than one weapon.
It really boils down to how much gold you have. Those with enough can craft their way to 500 and buy all the mats except a few and have the weapons.
I don’t think they implemented time-gating to make stuff fun so why do people assume it has been put in for that reason?
Of course they didn’t put it in for that reason. Do you think that anyone in this thread thinks that anet intentionally wants to make their game not fun? The point is, time gating to a large audience isn’t fun, so why implement it? Especially when it truly isn’t a time gating when those items are on the TP.
The only reason I have ever heard is that they don’t want people to blow through the content and complain for more. However, I have never heard anyone complain about that other than the fact that they don’t ever update or fix the dungeons which is another argument and a totally legit one at that.
Well, map completion is per character. You must have been on a different toon at the time.
As far as PVE goes, there really is no “class balance” per say. There is no need to truly balance the classes since you are only fighting AI monsters. Having said that, there really isn’t a class that dominates all others except maybe warrior if only because of the high DPS (which is the meta atm), but all classes are useful if played well and can be built many different ways depending on how you like to play.
When it comes to dungeons, joining a guild is probably your best bet, since most of the people will be at the very least decent at doing dungeons. Joining PUG groups is hit and miss at times, but overall, I find that most people at least know the paths and what to do in them so you don’t really get the “everyone run around and do whatever” runs.
Well, if you are just starting out, it may take some time to get used to the dodge and kite mechanics. Fighting veterans and champs at lower levels, even if you are one level above them isn’t the easiest thing to do to begin with.
If anything, gain a few more levels and try again or ask in map chat or guild chat (if you are in one already) for help. Someone is usually willing to help.
I have never tried to farm essence, but in all the fractal runs I have done, I only have 3 globs. I got those months ago. In the last 10-20 daily runs, I don’t think I received even one.
Edit: Not sure why the drop rate appears to be so low, I can’t think of any good reason for it.
As far as farming stuff like totems and other items that only drop from creatures, I think it would be easier to farm gold and just buy the stuff. You will end up spending a lot of time at random drop chances. In that same time, you could farm the gold to buy everything you need and more.
The only thing I go out and get specifically is node materials, i.e. wood and metal.
I got a suggestion: Put these topics in the suggestion forum.
Maybe they could have made the champ bags drop a random amount of one of the items rather than just dropping bloodstone dust at a ridiculous rate.
Why is everyone speculating that there will be some new tier of weapons and armor?
First off, this isn’t a tier that is being added to the game, it is something we already have (accessories, rings…..). They are just raising the tier of weapons and armor so that everything you have on you will be ascended.
There has been no talk at all that I can remember about adding another tier. Besides, why would anet add another tier in a year when we are barely out of the gates on asc. weapons and probably won’t see asc. armor for a couple months.
I play 1-3 hours a night. I do 3-5 boss events at most, run 1-3 dungeons and do a few jumping puzzles a night. I have everything but enough fragments to make my first weapon. I call that pretty casual and it didn’t take me very long to do.
Everyone needs to settle down and play the game. This stuff will come in time as you play the game. Do we all really even need a 2% bump in stats anyway? Is that really gaining you anything worth complaining about?
Not a programmer of any sort, but this is probably a looot more difficult than you think.
I mean, we can’t preview armor like that already, there has to be a reason for that.
Also, as a WvWer, noope. Don’t want a half naked female human in a dress walk up to me before pulling out a huge hammer and smashing me to death.
Sounds strangely erotic. :P
On topic, Yeah sounds like a great idea for PVE, put it in the suggestion forum.
Can’t tell if serious…… Or delusional……
I can’t stand the RNG and I don’t ever buy anything from the gem store that is an RNG item (BL keys, dye packs etc…..)
However, many people are willing to put up with it and spend their money. These threads are a waste of time. If Anet wasn’t making money doing it this way, they would have stopped long ago and “just sold the dye packs”.
Why may I ask? I guarantee far less than 1% of player population own legendaries, and each legendary is worth hundreds of dollars in real cash. Just because you see a bunch in LA doesn’t mean they are common… it just means people who own legendaries are more likely to hang around in LA and play the game for hours on end.
Of course the population of this subforum is also biased as it is more likely to have tp moguls with thousands or tens of thousands of gold.
They are not prestigious when you can buy one on the TP.
You only say that because you don’t care about the items. I care nothing for the rarity of these items. I already have one and you won’t see me going around bragging about it. I just want to collect the other ones because I genuinely want them for their effect. How is it fair that I get shafted because I just happen to want the ONLY items in game which cannot be gotten except through sheer luck (and I guarantee the vast majority of people who own these just got lucky after opening a few chests while not trying for them, so they are hardly prestige like legendaries).
Sorry, but I couldn’t help but laugh at this…..
I have had the same thing as you ilr for even longer. I haven’t seen a BLSK in probably 2 months. In fact, since the patch, it has been the same as you, luck, karma and coin. Before the patch was karma and coin only.
Someone always has it worse than you with RNG…..
Maybe Anet will introduce some type of farming before ascended armor comes out just like they did this time. And, maybe, that farming will involve lots of heavy bags with a change in the drop rates for stuff like Gossamer.
champion bags already drop gossamer…
I don’t know why everyone is concerned over gossamer – prices are not going to be like ancient wood for many reasons, but will probably be similar to current prices of orichalcum. Tailors should probably stock up now if you are concerned and must have Ascended asap – LW/AS should have plenty for leveling to 500 if you play semi regularly and salvage drops (for luck.)
The point was that it is one of a few items that you can’t just go out and farm because there are no nodes. The only place to really get them is in bags with a “Heavy” prefix and the drop rates on those were nerfed pretty hard. So, it’s not like you can really go out and farm them easily. Hence the reason I am saying that maybe Anet will change the drop rate so the material becomes more common before ascended armor is released.
Maybe Anet will introduce some type of farming before ascended armor comes out just like they did this time. And, maybe, that farming will involve lots of heavy bags with a change in the drop rates for stuff like Gossamer.
That’s not a bad idea.
I would suggest one step further though. Instead of having to click through and make all the stuff, why not just make it so that it automatically makes all that stuff for you if you have the mats? For instance, using your example, you need the inscription and the two components. If you have the mats to make them all already, why make each individually when you can one click and do it all in one shot.
Whats the weather like in Conspiracy Theory Land?
Let me relate some IRL things to your nonsense that you keep spewing about how the skeptics need to be the bearer of proof and how every time someone says anything about what is going on in the TP is some wild, crazy and elaborate conspiracy theory.
First off, thousands of people go to jail every year in this country based off circumstantial evidence.
Remember back in the 50’s when tons of people were claiming that the CIA was secretly involved in overthrowing the regime in Iran? Probably not, but remember when all the people that claimed that were “crazy”? Probably not again. But, guess what, they finally admitted it. Those " crazy" folks apparently just made a lucky guess.
Remember when the government was secretly creating a nuclear weapon that eventually ended up being dropped in Japan? Remember when those same “crazy” nutjobs were all claiming the government was doing it? Probably not, but hey I guess they also didn’t have any video tape evidence as a smoking gun. But they were wrong right? Oh wait…..
I can go on if you wish with many many more examples. Now, of course, this is far more extreme than some video game insider trading “theory”, but don’t act like just because someone can’t show video tape evidence, that it isn’t happening.
Here is the flaw in your analysis. Your buddy shows supply lowering and prices rising. The only conclusions you can, and should, draw from that are in regards to price, supply and demand. And frankly, we don’t know enough about demand from that data to even conclude anything solid about demand.
Unfortunately, the conclusions people are trying to draw are elaborate market control conspiracy theories. That is fantasy and conjecture.
I don’t get how J. Smith posting some some little spreadsheet is proof of anything.
That is just you taking someone else’s word for it. Just because it is Johns words, doesn’t make it true. Now, that’s not to say he is a liar or anything since I don’t know the man. However, who is to say he is telling the truth? He could be lying or “fudging” the numbers to quell the concerns in that thread.
The burden is just as much on you to prove that the market isn’t being manipulated (and, no, John’s “proof” isn’t enough). It would be very easy to do with something like a precursor that there are very few of. It’s very easy to dismiss something like this as some crazy old conspiracy theory, but in the end your view of “no market manipulation” is the same thing, fantasy and conjecture.
You can still buy weapons and armors on TP, and it’s cheaper now that everyone level up their professions to craft ascended weapons.
I leveled my last character to 80, with 2 crafting professions up to 400, but I didn’t craft my stuff, I bought it on the TP.
People who say it is mandatory to learn crafting, to progress in the game, just like whining.People are talking about Ascended gear that can not be bought on the TP. It can only be crafted or found by way of rare drops in world chests and, even if you do find one, chances are it won’t be the right weapon with the right stats anyway.
As for the thread, I can see both sides of the argument. Crafting can be boring and they are basically forcing you to do it to obtain certain gear. I don’t like crafting particularly and never really do it other than some cooking stuff and now the stuff for the ascended gear. BUT, if you just follow some of the guides that tell you exactly what to do and how to do it, it shouldn’t take very long. What’s an hour or less of your time really?
To the people who complain that it takes too long: I leveled weaponsmith months ago to 400 in under 40 minutes and that was with having to buy stuff off the TP, run over and get it and sell all the left over stuff at the end. It really isn’t that bad to just follow a guide.
only crafting and world chests? and EVERY champion in the game, AND fractals chests, AND vet supervisors in wvw, and tower lords in wvw and keep lords in wvw, there is no shortage of places to get them without crafting, and they are the same exact weapons, so there is nothing ascended wise that is only crafting
Yeah and you can get a precursor the same way, but not many people are getting those are they?
I am all for leveling up crafting. It’s quick and easy if you follow a guide, and up until a week ago was relatively cheap.
The answer to that is, don’t spend money opening BL chests, it is a waste. :P
Just reduce the drop rate. Why if Dragonite and Empyrean only drops a little bit at a time do we need to get tons of dust from a single champ container. It almost seems like ArenaNet put the relatively large drop quantity in just to annoy champion farmers in yet another attempt to dissuade farming.
Dissuade farming? Where have you been for the last 2+ weeks? They practically forced us to farm.
As for the dust, they should at least be able to be sold to the vendor for some copper/silver. Taking out the karma from the bags and loading us with a bunch of account bound useless items is just silly. It was basically a nerf of the champ bags that they just added to the game. They had to have known that adding champ loot bags was going to get people champ farming.

How terrible you can’t wait one more month when you’ve already had 10 months since they were released. Terrible indeed. sarcasm intended.
You need to read properly. No one is complaining about having to wait a month. Not sure where you got that from.
You can buy some inscriptions at the weaponsmith vendor by the station. 896 karma each. They have, I believe, 5 different ones.
18 exos salvaged – 0 dark matter
Do you not get dark matter until you reach a crafting level of 450 ?
I salvaged some before I even went past 400.
I salvaged about 10-12 (forgot exact count) and got 7 dark matter.
Crafting to 500 just started Tuesday.
You can get to 425 by refining t6 mats (ori and ancient wood).
I got to 450 by discovery using recipes bought at the vendor with karma.
After that you can start to refine ascended (t7) mats. That is about as far as I got. I hope that by the time I am done refining t7 I will be at 475. After that, from what I hear, you need to craft exoctics to get to 500 (maybe 6-8 or so).
Then after getting by the time gating stuff and collecting all the mats you need, you can craft ascended weapons.
You do not need to get to 500 unless you want to craft ascended stuff. It is all account bound only so you will have to craft it if you want it or hope for a rare random drop out in the world.
Well, the stat increase isn’t much, so I guess it would be a matter of if you want the “best” weapons in the game.
To me, it’s not worth spending tons of gold and trying to level crafting right now just to be one of the first to have them. I am waiting and taking my time to gather more myself and for the prices to drop. If I get them in 2 months or tomorrow, doesn’t matter. But eventually, why not have them? I will surely have the mats in due time and I don’t have anything else as a goal right now (i.e. a legendary).
They are account bound on acquire
I’m note sure, but it’s probably gone if you can’t find it.
Many things come and go all the time in the gem store. That one was related to the Queen’s Jubilee events over the last month, hence the name, and now that the event is over, it would make since that it’s gone.
I can see your point of view, even though it is rooted in such an extreme case of OCD you may beyond help at this point (no offense :P). BUT, this type of stuff happens in video games. Some times there are limited items that few are able to obtain and I don’t really see a problem with it. Sure, you have a blank space in your mini tab, which is a shame for a collector, but is it really the end of the world? You still have all available mini’s, or so I assume. If you think the price is insane on ebay, can you imagine how much gold you would have to pay in game to get it? Surely, you would have to spend an equal, if not more amount on gems to gold as you would just purchasing it off ebay.
Maybe the easiest solution is if anet could prevent that spot from showing in the mini tab unless you enter the code?
Well, there are many people who speculated on them and bought stacks and stacks of them pre-patch ( I think). People are also back to farming world bosses now very hard because you get the other mats in the daily chests, so supply will see a spike from that. Even if they aren’t selling the ectos they get, it’s one less person who is looking to buy em off the TP.
Looks as though this patch has caused quite a mess of bugs and glitches. Best bet would be to post a topic in the bug forum.
