“I want GvG like GW1!!!!”
“GW1 GvG was 8v8”
“I WANT GvG THATS NOT GW1!!”
My disappointment with this announcement

“Hard MMO content” means a raid fight that you have to grind over and over until the weakest player in your group can manage to press their buttons in the right order. THATS IT. THEN after you have gotten even the slowest and worst player in your team to be able to do it you have to grind over and over until the new gear drops AND you mange to roll for it. THIS IS NOT ENGAGING TO A LARGE SEGMENT OF THE PLAYERBASE OF GW2.
Highly skilled individual play exists in almost NO MMO, the only one that came close was The Secret World and to be honest it died because many people thought it was TOO unforgiving.
The constant complaint about wanting this “hardcore” content is totally misplaced in the MMO genre. If you are actually a solid player then learning a Raid takes seeing it once or twice then it becomes a waiting game while your worst team mates catch up.
Yes Tengu is the most important thing they could have spent time on. Forget actual content and gameplay or maps and progression. A totally pointless FOR LOOKS ONLY new race is exactly what they should have been working on first and foremost.
I dont understand why people are so into new races, its literally just for looks in this game and offers no play value. Its a huge timesink for them to add new armor models/fits for this new race that will offer ZERO gameplay additions. This is so far down on the list of things the game needs that its hard to see it.
I only play solo and the MM is actually pretty solid. I wish it would show you after the match who joined together like it does in DOTA2. It would shut the whiners up who blame “premades” for their personal failure to play properly or well.
1 for 4 here. Love seeing Hector troll every thread.
Ya Crovax is right, I have run into this bug twice today now. Some maps the south lane has a shield up right from the start when it shouldnt and the map becomes impossible.
This map is kittening awful. It just should not be in the rotation of ranked arena, the end.
If they want team deathmatch to be a thing make it ROUND RESPAWN! It isnt hard at all, look at games like CSGO.
The Q’s pop so fast now that you barely even see HotM.
Courtyard is a total joke, any 3+ team who wants to Q for it has already set builds and will just steamroll.
In regular maps if you get put against a group of 3+ and you dont have that large of a group on your team just afk. These matches are far more unbalanced than prior to the patch. Its a total joke right now.
I actually think they put Courtyard in to show people that TDM is indeed a terrible idea. If their idea was to give us options then they need to really rethink how they let us Q.
OP is 100% correct that you cannot have both premades AND courtyard. 500-0 is the only result.
This should be EXACTLY LIKE DOTA2 DOES IT!!
Possible combos are ONLY::
2/2/1, 1/1/1/1/1, 3/2, 5
You have to stop people Qing with 4 because its always going to be unfair and not fun for the solos.
This is WAAAAAY swingier now than soloq ever was.
All this week I have had insane lag in WvW. It pauses and then everything speeds up as the server catches up, only to do it again a little later. kitten is going on?
Mobas are popular because they are extremely easy to follow and understand. Even the concept of how to play one is extremely easy because of the minimal amount of buttons you need to use.
That is why it is an esport.
GW2 is far more complicated and extremely hard to follow unless you PvP a lot and know what is going on.
I don’t play LoL anymore. I still watch Worlds. It’s extremely easy to understand what is happening.
People think it is all because there aren’t many game mode or not enough maps. Or even poor balance and no events going on. It’s all bullkitten. It’s due to complexity of the game itself. There are factors that could make it more popular and easier to watch, but it will never be LoL because of complexity.
/thread.
Honestly if you believe this isn’t true please point me at an MMO e-sport.
Perhaps there could be some sort of guild event? On Thursday nights you get a map, reserved for your guild and whoever it chooses to taxi in.
I don’t like scheduling. Scheduling is a 20th Century concept. I like “on demand,” I like for the map to be ready for me when I get there, not for be to have to be ready when the map is ready.
Scheduling is what you do when people you have no control over are required to complete your objectives. Try going into a workplace and telling people that schedules are dead and they should do what you want “on demand”.
What is so bad about getting T5 anyway? Sure its not perfect but its not awful either.
Stop playing hot join problem solved.
who cares it’s hotjoin..
thank you for your extremely useful input on how to improve the quality of the game…
A) stop playing it, tadaa!
He makes a perfectly valid point. You are complaining about something you can 100% avoid if you want to… AND you will get better rewards for avoiding it. There is a fix in the game for this already, its called Solo Queue. The more people that play it the faster it will matchmake and the more fair the matches will be due to the population increase. Why ANet has let hotjoin stay for this long is beyond me.
Great idea to go from two professions that were pretty much universally considered in need of buffs and fixes, to the two professions that are pretty much universally considered in need of nerfs. I’m looking forward to it, I hope you guys did well.
Totally agree with this sentiment. If only the actual updates didnt roll out every six months. Imagine if games like LoL and DOTA2 only updated on a six month basis, DOTA2 gets balance “shaves” almost weekly and HUGE balance shakeups every couple months. I believe that ANet cannot call a balance update that rolls out that infrequently “shaving” as that implies small incremental changes rapidly released.
MMOs are poorly designed for skill-based game-play because of latency. The world isn’t physically going to get any smaller so MMO combat will always be bad for a very long time if not forever.
MMORPGs are the attempt of people to make TRPGs into an active event without breaks or turns. The only problem is that the MMOs which commercially succeeded in the gaming industry kept the (broken) mechanics which worked out in a turn-based encounter, more or less just slapped them over an non-turn-based system and then expected everything to play out fine.
So now in today’s world of MMOs, not only does the player forgo a lot of aiming, timing and general positioning with respect to other enemies or allies, but then we also have hard-counters everywhere that trivialize player choice and forge stagnant, narrow metagame character set-ups that dominate everything.
Playing a contemporary MMO is in effect trying to play Magic: The Gathering and not adhering to a turn-based system. Little kids throw cards everywhere and one of them ends up winning because he stocked his deck with cards that counter some other kid’s deck because chance favored him before the competition even began. MMO PvP (especially GW2 PvP) is a single game of rock-paper-scissors stretched out over a period of 10-20 minutes.
I am unsure how you can say that GW2 is rock-paper-scissors. To me and many others the problems in PvP in this game stem from a lack of back-end services and organization more so than a lack of good gameplay. I agree that other MMO’s are very much designed that way due to a lack of active gameplay elements, GW2 has many opportunities to outplay an opponent outside of just pressing skills at the right time. Positioning is a thing in this game, unlike in say, WoW where the only thing that matters is how well you can run around a pillar to LOS someone.
Wanting an MMO PvP environment to be an esport in the same way as a MOBA is never going to happen. There are too many skills on each class and its far far too hard to properly balance due to all the variables BUT ANet can do a much better job than they currently do.

If the system tries to average ELO then being higher ranked is going to suck a lot if there are not enough high ranked people online Q’ing. You will be placed with the worst players in the given game and it WILL be harder. Same thing happens in DOTA2 and LoL if you Q with friends far below your skill level… and it sucks there too.
Wait, wait… OP hated Liadri and hated this fight?
What fights do you like??
This one was easy to understand after you see the first mender hit the statue and the additional achieves are hard enough to take a couple tries but not so hard that you waste all night and get nothing. It is a really good balance actually. Not to mention the statue is really cool looking.
Wow, how you can say the old “Do this X times” and “Pick up all X of these” are somehow better than the new game play related achievements is mind blowing.
The old system completely sucked, @nexxe what gear was there for the old achieves again? Backpacks for metas?
The old system was a bunch of people in mapchat spamming wherever the new event was or just zerging the content in a giant wave of “Press 1 Here”
If the veteran doesnt disappear into the wall or into the ground you mean?
Same thing just happened twice in a row to me. Really frustrating.
Your character is part of an organized army dedicated to destroying the elder dragons… Why would he not know their names when you have all the knowledge of the priory and whispers to draw on>?
I think this pretty much sums up how you know the name in game. You don’t watch your go to the bathroom or sleep so by the same logic does this not happen?
Implied events like this are inherent in every work of fiction ever created.
I would assume that the peoples of Tyria would learn the names of GIANT MAGIC EATING MONSTERS THAT DESTROY THEIR WORLD. Just a thought.
See George RR Martins work on why killing characters can become tedious bore rather than exciting plot twist.
Just done the first part, investigating in Scarlett’s room.
For an RPG, this game has become very very linear
Do you want a story or just a random series of events ala Skyrim?
Not that there is anything wrong with Skyrim but the “story” was total garbage spread way too thinly. I quit that game the second I got bored of seeing what was in the next cave/mountain/ruins/etc. Its just a different way of going about things.
I think the incentive is the recipes that are only available in Tier 4?
T4 doesn’t have much benefit. It just makes items cheaper.
And if you aren’t interested in HVT gear there is nothing appealing to purchase.
I suggest saving all your geodes as we know the rest of the map is going to open up, and hopefully more rewards..
So you know what all the recipes do? The one posted on reddit was +40% condition duration and +70 Vit for AN HOUR. That sounds pretty worth it to me.
So far, meh! I’m just not seeing anything to hold my interest! I wish I could form a party with the NPC’s I want to do the story with like an RPG.
- I don’t like, have to use special currency just to buy a pick or salvage kit.
- Once again no storage for the new crafting materials.
- The sand storm is a nice effect.
Both Amberite and the Cactus and Pear are all storable in your bank.
First impressions are…. this was anets chance to win back a disenchanted player base and they have failed miserably.
Seriously? There sure are a lot of ‘disenchanted’ players still playing the game, then. Guess they must all be masochists……lol.
I just want this game to be good like GW1 was.
If this game was like GW1 I would have quit from boredom two weeks after release and never come back. Thank god they did something different.
Is this the “Prospect Valley Crash Site Climber”?
I bet none of the new crafting stuff will be used EVER AGAIN. NO OTHER REWARDS THIS SEASON AT ALL!!!!
They have basically given up on their original idea of balance shaving and iteration. How can they hope to have a pvp mode where they update it so infrequently?
Reading is fundamental.

I found at least dungeon rewards in Guild Wars 1 to be meaningless, even in hard mode. Do a hard mode dungeon get a couple of gold items you could sell as unided golds, always hoping for their rare drop.
I wanted a frog scepter. I ran bogroot growths more than dozens of times. Probably closer to hundreds. Never saw hide nor hair of a frog scepter.
Most of the rewards I got from that dungeon were pretty much worthless.
And if you weren’t solo farming the Underworld to get ectos, and played it with a full party, your chances of getting one weren’t that good.
The time spent to get set up and get through stuff was a lot longer and if you wiped you had to go in again. You didn’t get a gold for doing a 12 minute dungeon run in Guild Wars 1, you paid a platinum to enter FoW or the Underworld, and if you wiped you were kicked.
To some people that’s just more rewarding I guess.
Then there were the lockpicks to open chests to get a purple or a yellow and break the lockpick.
Those who say Guild Wars 1 was more rewarding must have been playing a different game than I.
Its the same rose-colored glasses people put on when they talk about WvW compared to DaoC, they tend to gloss over the horrible balance and tedium and just remember the good times they had. I bet if you could go back to those forums from the time people were running them they would look at lot like these forums today, people saying Ultima Online was THE BEST GAME EVER and how DaoC had so many problems and was unrewarding/casual, etc. etc.
For everything they “fixed” in the last patch…the created a new and even bigger problem.
On a macro basis, the game is now empty. They got rid of pvp ranks which makes all that effort (which was the ONLY “reward” for PvP before) wasted.
You’re kidding. PvP reward tracks are superior. Ranks mean nothing either then or now.
Instead of fixing underwater combat.
Even if it has an ideal balance and stuff – underwater physics and smooth of movements will kill all fun. Don’t kid yourself.
Reward Tracks only rewards the casuals like you, not the actual core of PvP (which is again a huge let down from A-Net). Second Underwater-Combat is still broken. Taking hotjoin or PvE/WvW as a POV of your experience is pretty unaccurate.
Here I thought the hardcore crowd always tells people how they don’t need rewards to play PvP…
So SoloQ is exactly like it is in every single other game with solo matchmaking? GW2 chat is not even on the same level as MOBA chat and I find it hard to complain until it does reach those kind of toxic levels.
I am a big fan of Rune of the Pack. Is the loss of power when using Traveler runes noticable?
I used to run almost this exact build in WvW roaming and yoloq. It is a monster but you have a really hard time beating certain classes. The only difference I used to run was picking up Spectral Mastery instead of Near to Death since you are running two LONG CD spectral skills.
Very fun build overall, I have yet to really play with it since the patch in April. I should give it another try.
Why the rune choice though? You are not taking anything that gives might, would Superior sigil of Str/Battle be a better choice to use some of that boon duration?
These are currently allowing classes to build very tanky and still put out incredible dmg. Especially if they can consistantly stack might.
Does anyone think ANet is going to fix these anytime soon?
Literally everyone is running the double proc sigil and like 90% of people are running Sup Str runes. How is it not obvious they are broken?
“I feel like a fortune teller.” This may be the single best comment I have ever heard about Necro. People like to pretend playing a thief or ele is really hard but dont realize how forgiving those classes are to mistakes. Play a Necro and find out what its like to REALLY be all-in every fight.
I was nodding my head at all of the things Jonathan and Karl said regarding class balance philosophy – until they got to Warriors, then they just fumbled the ball terribly.
During the stream, Jonathan and Karl stressed the idea of “holes in roles.” They spoke about Guardian’s being able to commit to the front line but being unable to disengage. In contrast, Thieves can jump in, do lots of burst damage, and back out because they’re not strong with sustain.
Warriors, however, currently break all of those rules:
• Warriors have high toughness, high health, and a lot of regeneration (Healing Signet), allowing them to tough it out longer.
• Warriors have incredible mobility, both into and out of a fight. It is exceptionally difficult to lock down a Warrior who does not wish to engage because of their unparallelled access to swiftness, leaps, rushes, and blocks/immunity.
• Warriors have both incredible burst AND sustain damage! They can hit hard, lock down a target, and bleed/burn them out over a short or long period of time. (For example: Longbow/Axe+Shield build)
• Warriors have access to too much condition counters. Dogged March and Cleansing Ire are a baseline for nearly every Warrior build. What’s worse is that they’re both in the same trait line!
Jonathan and Karl, you hit the nail on the head with every other class, but you dropped the ball big time on Warriors.
Pretty much this. Warriors weakness is supposed to be condi but they have slowly closed that with all the traits and skills they get now. In addition Warriors should NOT be able to escape a fight as easily as they do, they are the 2nd most mobile profession after thief and that is NOT balanced at all.
If they are going to use “Shaving” as their balance metaphor than I think they should have to “Shave” as often as people have to. I.E. AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK! (not asking for every day). A couple “Shaves” a month would go a long way to making the meta game and balance much better.
So I had a bunch of gold/mats sitting around and decided to gear up for this build. Albeit with exotic armor instead of ascended.
I have to say, loving it so far, you are super durable and still put out tremendous damage on a target. A lot more AOE potential than what I was running for sure, the only thing I miss is the lack of constant 25% move speed from traveler runes.
As flow mentioned, while the damage looks low because of a lack of crit chance/dmg you are hitting SO MANY TIMES. Between swarm/Condi/Golem/Mad King you just pound hits into targets. I have a superior sigil of strength on my warhorn and get far more procs on this build than I did on my last build.
As an excellent aside, you just faceroll over most thieves using this build, the aoe condi pressure combined with the innate tankiness is just awesome. I love getting jumped by one and laughing as I melt him.
More frequent balancing, and less skill fact balancing!
Problems:
1) Guardians are in a good place. We are so sick of hearing you say this. So just skip over the class instead since that’s really all you are doing.
2) “Shave” the stupid god mode builds: Condi PU mesmer, D/D ele, P/D condi thief, Settler’s Condi Warrior, Conditions builds in general (everyone and their mother is running conditions in PvP for a reason.
3) Fix the OPness of Strength Runes! They are way over the top. Classes that can stack might easily (eles, warrior, engis) are benefiting from this runeset so much and it is causing big time imbalance. Just look at the price of them on the TP, or how many people use them in PvP if you need evidence.Above all, please don’t wait so long in between balance patches. It’s better to have a constantly changing meta than a stale one.
Seconded, the WORST PART is the crazy slow balance updates. One balance update every six months is just inexcusable for a game company that once prided itself on its pvp. GW2 meta gets stale so fast because nothing changes.
flow, what hybrid build are you playing these days?
I am using 6/4/0/0/4 for Dhuum/Terror condition damage and d/d + Staff. Sometimes I swap the 4 in soul reaping into death magic for the staff traits. Usually run zerk armor/weps trav runes and celestial trinkets.
I really want to run an offhand other than dagger but it just feels so strong.
