When have I or anyone else ever said that? I think I saw the number 5% thrown about a bit, which in case you’re bad at math is fully 500 times more people than 0.01%.

Maybe not you specifically. But people keep saying only the most “dedicated” and nerdliest of all players should be the ones who are allowed to get a precursor.

Good. Before they changed the orichalcum ore spawn times the price of orichalcum was dropping through the floor by the hour. It was around 2s hours before they released the change.

I don’t see a problem here. You can still get all the ore you need to craft with easily if you gather it yourself and it’s now, once again a viable way to make money.

Orichalcum ore isn’t supposed to be common like all the other raw materials. It is in fact, supposed to be rare. Do you want to see it on the market for less than 1s? Because that’s the direction it was heading.

How can crafting be made profitable?

They could start by raising the vendor price by quite a bit for crafted items, which seems like the simplest of things they could do.

He meant the wvwvw maps. Not Malchors Leap and Cursed Shore.

On my server there is a rich orichalcum ore (since last night) in the eternal battleground jumping puzzle. But fantastically since the update that changed the respawn time for nodes it only gives 3 hits.

So if that is true, Wreknar (and I have no doubt it is) then the patch notes are at least half wrong, as Mithril Nodes are not refreshing every 24 hours.

It would be really nice if the patch notes were correct / corrected. :|

I don’t think they meant regular mithril nodes, but rich ones. They used to be on about the same timer as orichalcum.

@above, the kitten and play argument, doesn’t work in a game wherein there is an economy and a player market where it can be manipulated and exploited.

Anyways, the so called “legendary” weapons are in fact “legen-dairy” as all they prove is you can farm, waste time and gold and of course grind repeatedly to play the RNG
They command little to no respect from other players because as someone claimed before, and rightly so. There is little or no aspects of skill involved in crafting a legendairy weapon

Did you poll the entire player base to come to the conclusion that people who make legendaries get little to no respect?

People said the same thing about CoF armor yet I get asked daily where I got my armor and weapons.

Please note I didn’t get them because I wanted the attention, it’s actually kind of annoying. I got them because I like them.

Here's the thing about "getting" a legendary, give or take 3 years.

Haha, no.

The current rate at which the forge hands over precursors is hundreds of orders of magnitude greater than the likelihood of not getting a single precursor after a billion tries.

What I don’t get about all the RNG complainers is how this is any different from the rare drops off specific bosses needed to make the best weapons in WoW.

Difference being we’re not playing WoW.

Here's the thing about "getting" a legendary, give or take 3 years.

in Crafting

Items should be legendary because you used them in some legendary undertaking (thus becoming legendary yourself). Like, for example, beating Chuck Norris in a potato peeling contest. Thereafter, the potato peeling device you used would be viewed with awe by potato peeling contest fans the world over and might even be displayed someday in some museum as the Legendary Potato Peeling Device of You.

Not because you crafted your potato peeling device from chicken lips and iron ore soaked in 100 gallons of ear wax extracted at midnight from blind, ur-flea infested monkey spiders that have been taught to dance the macarena while eating tater tots.

Then again…

That’s actually a genious idea! o.O

Your exotic weapon should have it’s own xp bar and achievement system. As you slay monsters with it the xp bar grows but you also need to fill up it’s achievement list by using it to slay unique monsters around the world (Shatterer, Tequatil, dungeon bosses etc.) and once you do all that your mighty weapon that has been your companion for so long through thick and thin gains the precursor status which gives you the option to turn it into a true Legendary weapon.

Make it happen Anet!

That’s actually kind of an awesome idea.

A lot of things in life involve LUCK which is the real world equivalent of RNG. Everybody works hard to be rich but not everybody will be rich. The point being life isn’t really fair. Someone will get their dusk or precursor after 50 attempts and some will get it never that’s how life is. Just like millions will buy the powerball and only one will win, is not fair but that’s just life. Same with tens of equally qualified ppl will apply for job but only one will get it and it is usually for reason beyond skill aka luck.

Making the precursor Weapons RNG, significant cuts the amount of people getting it and therefore making it legendary. Even in the real world alot of things we use today is the result of luck, it just happened by accident.

There is already a luck element involved in creating legendary weapons though via the cost of the clovers, which you need to gamble with in the mystic forge.

I don’t think the expansions for GW1 were out every 6 months. They were closer to a year apart.

That being said Anet has gone on record as saying they want to offer more free content than paid. Or more free content than any other mmos out there.

Factions came out in April 2006 and Nightfall came out in October 2006. But there was a year gap between Prophecies which came out in April 2005.

Eye of the North was released in August of 2007.

Sorrows Furnace (the first major content released for GW1) was released in September 2005.

Official Response: Drop Rate of Legendary Precursors

the solution is quite simple really. If instead of being a hotheaded elitist, simply just play the game meanwhile slowly working for the precursor(or just wait out the overinflated prices), then there really is no problem. No one will buy a 700g precursor unless its worth 700g…. or u have lots of money.

In reality, these weapons are only worth so much because people are willing to buy it. The solution is quite simple, if u dont want to pay 700g for a precursor, then dont. Once no one buys it for 700 the price will change.

I’ve always thought that the price on the precursors are stupid, but just by speculating i can tell there is so much hype into getting legendaries and the envy that people will have for them, that people are willing to either liquidate everything they possibly have to have the chance to buy one, or either pay for it with cash.

That’s the thing though, only Anet, the seller, and the theoretical buyer know if they are being sold at those prices though.

Last night Dusk was at 400g and Dawn was around 350g. Who has that kind of gold that didn’t exploit or abuse free transfers?

Well if you don’t need one now, you should have no problem working the RNG forever.

Well my original post was deleted even though I edited it to be “meaningful”.

I’m curious to know what people consider a good time frame for getting a legendary. Because I have almost 400 hours in the game. I’ve rolled alts. I’ve done dungeons, I have full sets of dungeon armor. There isn’t a whole lot left for me to do in this game besides pvp.

So what is an acceptable time frame for getting one? 500 hours? 600? 1000? 2000? Please clue me in. I’m patient and willing to accept a grind to a certain extent, but there is a certain point of not seeing a return on my time investment where enough is enough. And I know a lot of other people feel that way too.

If it wasn’t an issue to a lot of people you wouldn’t see threads about it daily and Anet wouldn’t have posted on the subject specifically about the rising prices of precursors being a concern.

Also, often you’ll see people who say they are fine with the grind for legendary weapons how it is now, but when you ask them if they even know what all is involved in the process they say they don’t know.

Great idea but the problem remains that they would still be easy to get after the took the limited time recipes away. They would have to lower the drop rates for them and in the process probably lower the drop rates for all the other t6 mats, too.

I think a better solution would be to just give people more reasons to use them. Such as making the armor designs that use them in the creation process more appealing to use.

Where did I say I wanted one asap or easy? Reading comprehension – not everyone has it.

I just do not want to rely on RNG to get my precursor weapon. What is so hard to understand about that?

Im got 150hrs and had over 6 exotics dropped. I either sold them on the TP or salavaged them for their runes. I would have way over 400hrs but i fell sick and couldnt play for awhile

its called legendaries for a good reason.

So in your mind spending hundreds of gold and/or relying on RNG is legendary?

Personally I call that tedious and boring.

well most games relies on random numbers generator so all of them must be tedious and boring to you.

why do you play games then?

I can think of quite a few ways they could put in the game to make it so these weapons are still hard to get but make the process a hell of a lot more fun than it is now.

RNG is a lazy game mechanic put in place when the game devs either don’t care or don’t have enough time to make something better.

And to answers your question, besides GW2 I mostly only play FPS games. Battlefield 3, CS:GO, etc. No rng in those games.

There are RNG in those games. Ever used a machine gun and wonder why all the bullets dont go in a straight line? Its cause of a RNG is adjusting where the bullet is going even if by a little bit.

It’s still predictable and consistent and you have a direct control over it. That’s in no way RNG. Specifically, the guns in Battlefield 3 all behave in certain ways. Once you learn how to control them it’s a non-issue.

And none of that has to do with RNG in GW2, so nice try, I guess.

There is no direct control! Can you predict that your last bullet in your clip go up down left right or straight? No then there is a massive RNG that could determine a kill or be killed cause machine guns take forever to reload. All the guns behave in certain ways based on the greater range on the RNG. Sniper rifles have the least range on the RNG where as full machine guns have a huge RNG. Also the range on the RNG is effected by your movement. The game takes it all into account then throws it all into a RNG then from there adds that value to your bullet. I could easily find this code and show you the RNG. only games i know that dont use RNG are old classic arcade games.

edit: Also there is a ton of RNGs in GW2 and MMO’s from loot drops to mystic forge. I have no problem with the RNGs in this game for pre-cursor weapons. I want all legendary weapons but i am also willing to wait and be patient for them. Any way i can think of to fix this helps out botters out more then hinders them. By throwing a RNG it significantly lowers botters chances and money value (not that i seen to many botters in all my game time). Plus the precursors have a chance to drop from monsters much the same as in GW1 where you had to kill a single monster over and over just to get its special skin weapon or redo the same dungeon over and over just to have a chance to get that unique skin. They just made a 2nd RNG with the mystic forge so now you have 2 routes to get that weapon rather then just 1. I lost track how long i played a single dungeon in ETON just to get the frog staff (i never did get it mind you cause GW2 came out before i could). So now i got 2 ways to get the weapon i want rather then just 1.

Recoil is calculated into the RNG dude shoot a machine gun at a wall 1 bullet at a time pulling trigger once every 2 secs i bet you the bullet wont hit the same spot. Thats cause of the RNG not recoil or movement or anything just RNG. Your arguement still fails badly. And i believe there should be RNG for precursors or else everyone would have one cause there is no other method that forces people to play for months or years on end to find the precursor. Also to find legendary stuff in real life took people years what makes you think Anet should just make it so simple for everyone to get? Right now bots have to waste so much to get it that it still makes them rare.

You’re completely clueless. The huge amazingly big grand canyon scale difference is that in Battlefield 3, with time and practice, aka skill, you can learn to compensate for the “rng” as you keep putting it. Why are you ignoring this little fact? In BF3 I control how fast my gun fires, I control how I move, I’m forced to be aware of other players and move accordingly. Maybe you’re just bad at FPS game and don’t understand these concepts? I don’t know.

But in GW2 no amount of skill will compensate for the RNG to get a precursor weapon. Because it is in fact, actually true RNG. The difference is night and day.

I’m also fairly certain that the devs have confirmed the only way to get the precursors is through the mystic forge. I don’t exactly believe people who claim they have got one through drops. And whatever the case it’s still RNG. In almost 400 hours playing I haven’t got a single exotic drop so that’s even a worse way to get one than gambling on the mystic forge or buying one off the market.

You’re really trying to argue this point? Skill actually plays a part in FPS games. Once you learn to control the recoil (the rng as you call it) it becomes muscle memory and that’s all there is to it. It’s not even comparable and I’m not sure why you are trying to do so.

You absolutely 100% cannot control the RNG in an mmo. You’re either lucky or you aren’t. And yes, you are right, there are certain aspects of rng in GW2. But as far as the precursor weapon goes there doesn’t have to be.

Why do they need to be exclusive to the super hard core who play 10+ hours a day 7 days a week?

Anyone who wants one should be able to get one, that’s what it comes down to. We all paid money for this game. We are all entitled to have 100% access to it, not just people who play all day ever day.

I honestly don’t get that line of thought. If you want a dead game keep making content that only the smallest portion of the player base can access.

That being said I’m not saying I want it easy to get. I just don’t want to rely on RNG or a fickle market. But people who read these threads and say they are fine with how it is now seem to only focus on the idea they think we want it easier to get. That couldn’t be further from the truth. No one has asked Anet to make them easier to get.

And I’ll just ask this. Why are people so concerned about what others have or haven’t done in the game? I want a legendary weapon because to me they look bad kitten and I plan to play this game for years to come as I did with GW1 so I want to look awesome while doing so. It has nothing to do with exclusivity and wouldn’t bother me in the slightest if Anet gave everyone a legendary weapon for free as a gift for Christmas.

Anet has specifically said they will never offer a race change option. It would mess up personal story lines, just for starters.

Besides that, For Great Justice seems better than battle roar. Battle roar just has a little bigger range.

As I said, I don’t favor that idea and it wasn’t all that refined to begin with.

My personal favorite idea is to make unique events that happen very rarely as in once a week or even less, two weeks, or a month that would reward players for completing it progress towards creating their precursor weapon somehow. These unique events would have to have a high chance of failure unlike events do now, as well.

Picture zone wide events where multiple objectives need to be met in different areas of the map at the same time with lots of champion bosses and so on.

It would address several issues. Keeping the “cost” constant, keeping it fun, and keeping it unique.

Also since the game has released I’ve kind of been disappointed at the lack of truly unique zone events. All the events in the game happen routinely at certain times so it would be awesome if there were some events that we couldn’t predict exactly when the would happen.

So it would address that issue, too.

I never really thought much of them, and so never really wanted one. If I did, I don’t think I’d ever be able to get one. There’s too much money tied to it, and I’m not a Guild Wars stock broker like some people. I try to play normally, and there’s no possible way I’d make that much money over time without actively refusing to use any of the money I make. Even then it’d take one or two years. And certainly, there’s no way to currently get one without obscene amounts of money or exploits, since the mystic forge apparently is run by the mafia.

Consequently, I have a low opinion of legendary users. I don’t see them as prestigious, but rather, as people who have cheated their way to them, or who make a living in-game off manipulating the economy. These are not legendary players. They’re just the game equivalent of the 0.5% in real life.

You never tie prestige weapons to money, in any game. Ever. Else, you get situations like this.

But no, to answer the question directly, I don’t think legendaries are realistic for any player unless they are manipulating the trading post in some way, as a career in-game. Obviously the system they have now is broken. It was a bad idea to begin with, and reeks of standard MMO conventions that ANet promised they were trying to avoid. It wasn’t in GW1 – not this bad by a longshot – but it’s in the sequel. That tells me they’re trying to cater to the worst portion of the genre’s fanbase, because they feel they have to.

The people who got them legitimately and posted them on reddit had the help of others. That’s the only way “legit” players have obtained them as of right now. I’m not aware of any one legit player getting it 100% on their own.

I don’t want a legendary weapon to impress others. I don’t care what anyone else thinks. I play the game for my own enjoyment not yours or any other persons and that’s all that matters to me.

Good thread and well reasoned arguments unlike the imbeciles posting in the official thread in the crafting section.
Disagree on these points:
- In my opinion, having the precursor be a random drop from the forge adds a great deal of mystery and specialness to the items. If there were set recipes, then people would know exactly what they require and I think that would ruin that feeling. I like the mysterious feeling but at the same time I dislike the rng aspect that causes it so I understand your reasoning very well. However I’d rather keep rng and not have a set recipe.
- It has only been a month since the game launched and even less since people started trying to get precursors. The price should stabilize shortly.
- Players with a legendary are currently positively received and that is not going to change.
- You keep saying you want to be tested with skill. You have to differentiate farming for karma, badges, tokens, whatever, and skill. Farming for x materials is much closer to farming the gold for buying the precursor than it is to a test of skill. So just say you want a set recipe.
- A real test of skill (killing a hard boss) will definitely be too easy. This is fairly obvious if you think about it.

What about if, to get a precursor weapon from the mystic forge it took 4 gifts from the dungeons? That’s 2000 dungeon tokens. Or more tokens than is needed for a full set of exotic dungeon armor + 2 1 hand weapons.

I don’t favor this idea but I think it would be an acceptable solution. Of course the down side is that those gifts are used elsewhere in the creation process for legendary weapons.

This would put it in the neighborhood of 20-30 hours to obtain a precursor and still be fun depending on your view of the dungeons. More importantly the price would be constant and no RNG would be involved.

Anyways. This is a well thought out post by Tomcat. I just don’t get why people are so stuck on the idea of having the only way to get the precursor being from RNG or grinding for gold to buy one on the market. They seem so afraid to change the system to actually make it fun.

The whole attitude that “only a small portion of player base deserves to have them” bugs the ever living kitten out of me.

The entire purpose of the pve end game is decking your character out in amazing looking gear. If not then why is the reward for dungeons good looking gear? Why are their achievements tied directly to this? Why are there medals tied directly to that on the character select screen?

And then short sighted people who say “well 300g is fine price, if you can’t afford it go after something else blah blah blah”. They are 300g right now. Not even 2 months after the games release and a very very very gracious 1% of the game population can even come close to that amount. What happens in 6 months when not as many people are playing? When not as many people are buying on the market, when the supply is even less and the demand remains relatively constant? The prices go up up and up.

The simple fact of the matters it that if you play regularly you will never make enough money to compensate for those costs.

There are so many fun ways they could make to get the precursor weapons I just can’t believe people are so stuck on the idea of getting them through RNG or grinding hundreds of hours for gold to buy one on the market. That is as far from legendary as you can get.

They have their priorities in the right place 100%
The greater good is of paramount importance
if you ignore it you get a broken game that is fun for no one at all
the economy is totally ruined and you have nothing but hackers running around.
and sorry but the game is still 100% fun for me
and yes you can call me an Anet Fanboi and whiteknight!

The economy is pretty fairly ruined and has been since launch.

I’m of the opinion that they need to adjust pretty much everything in regards to enemy density and combat behavior. Spread wildlife out a little more in the open world; put a little more space between groups of mobs within noteworthy areas; reduce respawn rate globally; increase the time before each event restarts; increase the radius of the tether to allow mobs to be moved further from their spawn point; remove the invulnerability effect when mobs are attacked from an unreachable position, allowing players to use terrain from a tactical perspective.

If they are worried that too few enemies and too much time between respawns will ruin things in areas of high population, well, isn’t that the point of the scaling feature they discussed before release? If they get that scaling feature to properly adjust density/respawn based on number of players, they can do all of the things I mentioned and the game would be better for it (in my opinion).

God no. Mobs need a smaller tether distance. Go run around Orr for an hour and you will feel the same after having the same pack of mobs continually aggro more stuff around you and chase you for 1/4 the length of the map.

I don’t want one because it’s rare. I want one because it looks bad kitten The same reason I have CoF armor. It looks bad kitten They could be the most common weapon in the game and I wouldn’t care as long as they look amazing.

At the end of the day I play for my own enjoyment and part of that enjoyment comes from decking out my characters in gear that I think looks good. It has nothing to do with rarity. It just happens to be that the rarest gear is also (usually) the best looking.

This was also the idea behind gear in GW1. The problem is this grind trumps the grinds to get gear in GW1 in just about every way.

Exactly. What else have people got to work for in the game if not legendaries? Doesn’t matter what the stats are on them and that’s the way it was in GW1 as well.

The problem here is the insane price inflation. And if it wasn’t a problem then Anet wouldn’t have posted on it no matter what you guys think.

The main issue I have with this change is that just like all the dungeons changes they’ve made since release is that it was very obviously untested and also the fact that they just dropped it on us without a word on it until 5 days after the fact.

Besides that something had to be done about orichalcum prices. Prices were simply dropping through the floor and you could literally watch the price go down by the hour the day before this change hit.

It has evened out the supply and the demand. But it really did need to go through about a months worth of QA first, not that they had the time to do that though. To be fair.

Spending gold or rng is just a small part of creating the legendary.

What you are asking is to make anet to spoon fed the legendary to u.

Please point out in my posts where I said I wanted to be “spoon fed a legendary”.

Here’s an idea I came up with that is terribly formatted but I think it conveys that I do not in fact want it to be “easy” to get a legendary. But just for the record it’s funny that people think rng or grinding hundreds of hours for gold is hard.

Might not be the best idea ever but it’s better than what we currently have.

Allow players to craft the precursor weapons. That means they are going to have to have 400 of either artificing, weapon smithing, or hunting. Which they will need anyways if they are going to make a legendary weapon.

Now. There are several ways they could make the process unique for these weapons but this is the one I think would work best.

Make the discovery require 4 parts. There are 4 boxes in the discovery window, yet nothing else in the game actually uses all 4 boxes that I’m aware of.

The 4 separate parts could then be sold by npcs that only spawn after various events. Better yet would be to create events in various zones that only happen very rarely, like once a week and have these npcs only spawn after they are completed.

The 4 separate parts would then each cost 20-30 gold. To put it in a way that Anet might understand, this would be a pretty decent gold sink.

In the end it would end up costing a person 80 to 120g depending on how much the 4 parts would be sold for. But the important thing is that it would allow people to feel like they are making progress towards their chosen weapon. At the same time it would keep the costs of these weapons constant (yet still rare) and people could actually work towards them without having to rely on RNG or super inflated prices on the market.

There are so many benefits to having a process like this created that it’s really blows my mind that the only thing Anet could come up with is RNG. The foremost among those reasons is that it takes a huge grind and breaks it up in to pieces that actually feel manageable. Second is that it doesn’t require the entire player base to be at the mercy of greedy players. While this idea isn’t all that refined I think it’s a hell of a lot better than the current “system”.

This is also outside the fact that you have to spend no less than 120g on other things in the process to creating your legendary weapon of choice.

Sure isn’t mine. I’m not sure why people would be opposed to alternative ways to get the weapons.

I dont really know what all is involved in getting one of these…what part of the quest makes it where you are forced to buy something off the TP? or is this something you could do for yourself and just want the convenience of the TP (not meant to be insulting there but is a serious question as I know with RL the convenience thing is a real nice option)

For what people call the “precursor weapon”. You have to either buy one off the market or get one through RNG by throwing weapons into the mystic forge. Which depending on your luck could cost you very little or quite a lot. It’s a lot more likely to cost you hundreds of gold and lots of frustration doing it the mystic forge route though.

Again as said before, they’re legendaries for a reason, and therefore not really in the realm of “attainable” for the really average casual player.

And I’ll say to you the same thing I said to the other person. RNG or spending hundreds of gold on the market is not legendary.

its called legendaries for a good reason.

It’s not even legendary anymore, it’s crossed the line to being plain autistic.

Seeing a legendary used to impress me, I could see the time and commitment that goes into making one back then.

Now whenever I see one I can’t help but feel sorry for the people who wield them. It’s crossed over from being an object of vanity to one of pity.
Because you know deep down inside that the ridiculous amount of time and effort required to get them now means that the game has to eat into their real lives (if they had any) to achieve that goal .

A lot of the people who have them now had the help of several others or their entire guilds. I don’t think any one person has actually obtained one on their own, without any sort of help.

The game has barely been out 2 months. What happen in another in 2 more months? They will be pushing the 500-600g mark. The rate at which we get money playing the game normally is not enough to compensate for those prices even if you do play 10 hours a day 7 days a week.

As of about an hour ago the prices for dusk and dawn:

Dusk – 315g
Dawn – 299g

For reference just one week ago these weapons were around the 200g mark. Four weeks ago they were going for less than 100g.

There is a thread in the crafting section talking about this exact thing. This thread will probably get either closed or merged.

No offense, but you might want to stop monitoring the price of precursors and start monitoring how many players are quitting the game after seeing videos like this one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpACqli6Luk&feature=youtu.be

Where players have gone through over 350 Attempts and still not received their precursor.

I have 2 friends who have decided to quit playing the game entirely after spending all of their gold, (one of them spent over 150g) on the mystic forge trying for his precursor.

After watching this video I bought another 52 random lvl 80 greatswords and got 2 rares. Along with all previous attempts I have already lost more than 100g on gambling. How does that feel legendary?

Btw I have played 542 hours over last 46 days.

This game does not reward your commitment. One RNG to rule them all.
Not funny at all. Not legendary at all.

Imagine King Arthur throwing random greatswords into well hoping for Excalibur.
Hilarious:)

Nope, it’s not funny. But it sure is legendary hard to get a legendary weapon.

RNG is not legendary in any way shape or form. RNG is not hard. RNG is not fun. You’re kidding yourself if you actually think it is.

Stop being a blind fan boy for a moment and realize there are actaully ways they could make to obtain these weapons that would be both fun and hard all the while keeping them unique.
