Hard control with no dps, does not take skill out of the equation. Setting up the ranger to compliment other classes is exactly what this game is about: team play. Its about creating proper synergy between classes and rewarding working as a team, rather than bringing more numbers to a fight.
right well, you can keep repeating that all you want, but it doesn’t change the fact that your suggested method accomplishes the exact opposite of your intent, and needs to be polished more to allow for a “Soft control” solution instead. Bonus points if you can do it using the Conditions that already exist instead of inventing up a new one that could have far-reaching unintended consequences
By making them more effective you are providing a crucial role for rangers in wvw without making a complete overhaul of the class.
They can’t be “made more effective” though. There isn’t that sort of depth in the system.
And even if they were given the ability to override the over-abundance of counters to them, players would just come to resent it as much as Immobilizer Spam or Stealth-Stomping because it has no accessible counter for the individual caught in it. Just curious. How many other professions have to;
rely on a single weapon to do good dps,
learn when they can dodge with it,
learn when they can evade with it,
learn when they can disengage with it,
learn how to fight with auto attack off,
learn to fight with auto targeting on,
learn how to position and reposition themselves repeatedly during fights,
assuming their reaction time is good enough.
to master the use of it before becoming consistently effective in combat?It’s great that we have found ways to use some of the swords odder mechanics for our benefit but we need to keep it in perspective with the other professions. Even the development team has remarked on making gameplay less difficult.
Whole darn game would be a lot more “skill-based” (read difficult) I think if all weapon mastering had these intricacies. Not saying I love all of them all the time, but I did find ways to exploit those crazy physics from time to time. (like the 180-free_camera backwards wasp leap with a quick targetless forward-followup leap).
It could be argued that it does require a fair bit of experience and coordination while constantly re-acquiring targets and unselecting targets when doing it in Wvw.
well, in theory it was supposed to create “pressure”. Infact that’s where most of their hands-on experience came from for balancing this stuff. Was looking at lots and lots of pressure builds who’s job it was to eventually stack something called a “death penalty” while exhausting Rez Sigs.

What I would like to see happen to the ranger is that it is given a proper toolkit to provide crowd control, in support of the team such that they can either evade an oncoming push or they can keep a number of enemy in a kill zone
Nice attempt in theory, but in addition to doing absolutely nothing for End-game PvE, it also fails to live up to your opening point about WvW as well where those of us who DID beat to 2-1 odds and route some Zergs, did so through stacking Stability and Condition shedding pretty much exactly like GvG. In GvG, you never had multiple Condition spammers either (hex spammers were kitten-way…. we don’t talk about that). It was very rare to ever see more a few spots going to Rangers / Dervishes / Necros / Sins once all the Badtouch/en-gen/S-way garbage was nerfed out of the lower rank matchups too.
Granted, these boons can be stripped by a well still but that further cements the point that Ranger itself has nothing to offer here even IF your view of things was carried its natural conclusion. None of the formats leave room for a ranger to be part of them. And it’s not the ranger that was designed wrong from the ground up. It was the formats.

Just watch. There won’t be any big changes there. Not even for a class voted this overwhelmingly desperate for them. If I could remember how many ectos I had on my inactive account, I’d bet them all right now that this is exactly how it’s about to play out.

Mandatory is fine when the upsides outweigh the downsides.
For instance, “Pets” that just followed you around buffing your team (aka: spiritway) have always been seen as upsides with almost no downsides since even the days of GW1. Imagine if our pets could do the same thing in a DPS-buffing fashion that almost compensates for them not attacking in melee 24/7 like the dumbest AI on the planet? Yeah those would be very good upsides for a mandatory Pet to compensate for that mandatory lower base-DPS that only ranger is punished with.
But here’s the funny thing: when I checked the wiki today for info on what skill changes were made the past few months since I’ve been away, guess what I saw? ….that’s right, even more Spirit nerfs and some junk about shifting the power over to power builds except it was only 1 trait and 1 attack on longbow that got those “power buffs”. I guess they’re still fighting this “Bunkers with access to DPS” battle?
So yeah… apparently Upsides VS. Downsides is not exactly something Anet has been demonstrating consideration-of everywhere, unless the purpose is more PvP nerfs. In that case though, they’re all over it like you wouldn’t believe. They clearly know the difference. but _it Seems a bit inconsistent if you ask me.

They would be hard pressed to do a CDI and then take no action.
…or simply take a few actions that have no effect.
If you could only fix 3 things what would these be?

….b/c removing their outright refusals to do PvE skill-splits, is the only way this class is ever going to be fixed. We already went through this in GW1. They never actually put PvE Ranger on par with the rest of the classes there either, but atleast they didn’t allow every single PvP nerf to continually degrade it all the way down to PARAGON STATUS
The LEAST they can do here, is repeat that pattern.
….come to think of it, Paragon would become pretty Overpowered actually in THIS game for everything but Dungeons given how many people tend to cluster together at once even in PvE. Especially for Zerg vs. Zerg. So actually, they could even improve ranger probably just by bringing it up to paragon status which just goes to show how utterly BAD they’ve been in the actual metas that GW2 creates. (I actually did this to some degree with Nature-shouts build …. it’s not quite up to par with Paragons but it was a glimmer of hope)

this will have been the first time they’ve been expected to do that since the game came out though. The only other thing similar to this still pending them making good on any promise at all, is Acquiring Precursors, right? ( I jut checked the wiki, I don’t see anything about alternative means for those yet either even though 5 months ago they were talking about that being a stretch goal for January … which also has come and gone I see).

Look I don’t wanna take this TOO oldschool, but flashback to 2006 … Both Prophecies & Factions combined together were struggling just to break 1 million sales. Why? B/c almost every skill in the game at that point was still balanced almost entirely around PvP. Then sales really started to take off the next year. Why? ENVIRONMENT. Balancing for PvP might get you hardcore cred, but it doesn’t move any series towards mainstream saturation. And once skill splits came in, the sales just kept going from 3 mil, to 5 mill, to kitten near 8 mil by the time Gw2 was being announced and everyone wanted those HOM points too. And …yeah… still today a lot of people blame NF for ‘ruining PvP’, but that’s only b/c they didn’t have the foresight to do the skill splits side by side with its release.
So what is going to be accomplished here exactly when the main lense it’s viewed through are primarily “PvP goggles”? Yeah I get it that some people claim they can put that sort of perspective aside, but I’ve been a PvP’er myself since 1994. You can’t fool me. Any game with both modes, and the side I always hung out in was PvP? HAH! There’s no relating to those PvE’ers problems… Yeah they can be heard, but in the back of any PvP’ers mind, the main concern is always, ALWAYS, “how’s this gonna affect the balance in PvP though?”.
Don’t get me wrong, I can’t wait to see where this goes…. But it looks like the topic is already trying to have its cake and eat it too. There’s no indicator at all that PvP will have to a take a back seat to this one. I mean for crying out loud, It’s spelled out right there in the title —-> “Global:”

yeah, so, I quit last summer partly b/c they specifically said they weren’t going balance around PvE which mainly meant they refused to do anything at all with Ranger. Has it reached this point mainly b/c that remained the status quo the past 8 months?? Was anything actually GOOD ever done in between that time? And I’m not talking about more hitpoints for the pets, I tested that change… it meant the pet could take 1 extra hit from a Dungeon boss. (or still only ONE in the case of TA’s path #4 boss or basically every single trap ever & Jade Maw attacks while also making the Lupicus & bloodstone-Dwayna fight more difficult for everyone else on the team b/c the pet wouldn’t die SOON ENOUGH).
So what changed so far? Did pets ever get a Go-To flagging ability like our Heroes in GW1 had? Did 1h-Sword ever get fixed so we could cancel and Dodge instead of being locked in additional follow-throughs that launched us off cliffs? Did shortbow ever get dragged out of the ditch it was left in? Is Dagger still only highly situational at best in PVE? Did we ever get Torch as a Mainhand? What DPS buffs did we get this fall? And don’t forget Gear-Treadmill just making the pet worse because it doesn’t benefit. And Is Longbow-Bear still the only variety of ranger I’ll see if I WERE to login and walk around any area in close proximity to the cities, or where there’s a World Boss? Would I still be seeing Bear-Longbows in Dungeon PUGs too? Do dungeon pugs even still exist??

I did everything I could to get these issues the attention they deserved. Especially the massive imbalance of Vet Subjugators instant-casting 6-8 Wells at once. I tried my hardest, I took videos of these bugs, I tried to educate the players as well on how to cope with it all. In the end, it was all for naught. Our feedback is all for naught, especially when it’s just to try and save them from themselves. This is the proof of that.
An earlier Studio (can and DID) find ways to do MORE with LESS.
That is to say… this would have still been considered a windfall profit for the Studio we all knew back around 2006… So no, they can’t just fix this by throwing out Expansions UNLESS those expansions actually focus on all the things everyone here has been begging them for…. (completely NEW weapon skills, “real” changes to Zerg-vs-Zerg, more meaningful storyline & personal story plot that branches and STAYS branched, compelling dialogue, more frequent PvE skill updates, ….and a serious look at the Ranger class in general probably wouldn’t hurt either considering it was the 2nd most rolled class but the least playable in end-game).
Welp good luck with it in any case guys. The clock is ticking…

Yeah. WvW can be fun, but not when Anet throws you against two big zerg servers. Opponents near our WvW pop levels for equitable fights would make it a hell of a lot more fun.

IF rangers could choose to go into combat without their pet and gain all bonuses of skills or traits that would normally affect them AND their pet.
for example: Troll Unguent would grant about 1500 health per second for 10 seconds on the same 25 second cool down. Heal As One would grant the ranger about 12k health… etc. With maxed out healing gear/traits in Pve, you’d get 2k hp per second from T.U. and around 16k for Heal As One.
Signets would basically be the same only you wouldn’t need the signet of the beastmaster trait to gain both effects… Already this is insanely OPIf the healing were to be reduced somewhere between 25%-33% and there was an option available so u could fight w/out your pet, how would it fare? or should I just shut up because I have terrible ideas…

Well, during reset it was fun being able to actually fight and keep Hills and Bay in there, and that meant no inflated PPT for you guys, which showed us all the real coverage during reset you have. You’re either pushing our BL and losing all in yours, or defending and not keeping a thing in the other ones.
Anyways, keep the fights, bags, blabla… all those thing people say.

And I hope this isn’t some big secret I get in trouble for revealing, but it’s not a matter of how much coverage BP has that matters here. It’s WHO’S covering WHAT. This is directed at DB. Remember the last time we fought and you kept bringing superior numbers but your Bay got WP’d anyway? And anytime you got close to taking it back, you’d see a huge Blob show up and push you back and almost take your Garrison too? …. that’s wasn’t coverage, that was diverting of resources.
With SO MANY PvE’ers though clogging up queues and taking Supply from keeps, and flipping stuff at the wrong time or keeping everything paper & just generally being useless on ALL sides though — That flexibility to quickly divert resources in time just isn’t there. And worse than that, we’ve even got some Organized blobs now behaving exactly like PvE’ers…. refusing to defend the last bastion on a BL; b/c they simply refuse to recognize what a Morale symbol it really is for everyone who sacrificed so much time to upgrade it.
Last week I told Ehmry what they needed to do to beat us. And they did it. Gratz to them. This week I’m not going that far…. BP has enough problems already and fractures that just seem to keep getting bigger. No one’s “wildcard slot” is hanging in the balance in this fight either. It’s obvious at this point who the top 3 are (and it’s not any of us) so this whole “League” crap is already over with. And equally apparent: that Anet misappropriated the proverbial canine here before it was ready to be rolled out.
IOW: None of it matters b/c as soon as this Living Story update is over with and they roll out that ugly kitt Ascended Armor…. WvW is going to be deader than it’s ever been before, and every server here that was engaged in these sorts of ForumWarrior threads, will be too busy hugging eachother in the “day after” pity-party.

You mean solid Green as of this posting? …I don’t know actually… It could still be bugged for all we know, we just haven’t found out what the problem is THIS week. Last’s week’s bugs weren’t as apparent as massive rubber lag but they were just as debilitating. Point is: don’t assume Anet is always fixing things. There’s a super long history of bugs they’ve taken Months or even a whole year to get around to fixing even after multiple reports were publicly submitted directly to their developers (who in a lot of cases, claimed innocence by blaming the submitters for not just sending it directly to support/QA instead).

Try to think in terms of how many things have to be messed with here b/c that’s also the scale of Collateral damage done by it as well. This is a problem of SCALING and there’s really no way to target for specifics when it comes to something like that nomatter how many little “complexity” rules you try to shoe-horn into it.
They didn’t Scale PvE that way…. And this is basically PvE as far as skill balancing is concerned.

We have managed to capture undeniable proof that the evil alliance of Ebay and BP truly existed this week in WvW working against poor Yak’s Bend!!! At around 5pm Eastern the Evil Alliance (BP and Ebay) converged on Yak’s Garrison. Around 5:15pm they turned into Bags.
There ya go, now that’s how you take a convincing screenshot.
Admittedly I have no idea when that ever happened though … could have been weeks ago :p

A much better solution would simply be to cut all AOE damage ticks in half if they overlap where an Ally is …. + wells not being cast’able where an Ally is standing, and marks not being triggered by enemies if there’s any allies in their range. DPS penalizing Stuff like that would be more than enough to incentivize people not to use Blob Zerking as their one-stop shop for taking territory.

I agree.. this is 1 line of code to be added to a vendor. Not some massive undertaking. There’s no rationale against it. ….and I guess none provided here either…. but whatever we’re getting used to that I suppose.
(well they are … I’m shopping around for a more rewarding organized PvP experience myself at the moment so I don’t really care how long it takes at this point)

We take their keeps while they are also queued on the map. (Dont use the queue bug excuse, we have seen well over 50-60 BP zergs running around your map)
It’s not an excuse, it’s an established fact at this point since the only time the BL is retaken by BP is when they CAN get those 50+ people all loaded in together. ….As opposed to when YB takes it over where BP players are seeing YB zergs of 90+.
That’s not an exaggeration either, that’s documented in screenshots in the Threads dedicated to that topic and there’s likely to even be some video proof floating around from BOTH SIDES if we can get people to actually start taking this issue seriously and treat it like the Network bug that it is instead of a stupid ForumWarrior talking point.
Wasn’t there some architecturally focused Korean GVG/RvR game coming out next tho?… I recall seeing something like that on mmorpg.com which gets hyped to hell like every game they’ve ever hardcore Band-wagoned on since Age of Conan through WH and then Rift… to whatever the heck this other thing is. Also there’s that Elderscrolls thing that when announced basically promised to completely rip off GW2. ….not trying to drag this off topic, just pointing out that there ALWAYS some other “new shiny” that will keep people from coming back to a previous game that’s over 6 months old …. especially when that game has no hope whatsoever of any expansion pack. In a lot of situations like those, I’ve always just ignored what old friends or past-Clans I used to hang out with were doing next. If you’re good enough at what you do and you can actually support other people doing it, then it’s really not that hard to make inroads into other groups who are just as good.

read threads like these and see who’s getting the props… check out http://www.borlis.org/ and see who’s active every night and actually holding territory. If you’re really feeling adventurous, pop into the TS and ask around the channels if any of them will let you tag along. But mainly: Don’t judge by PPT, or by presence on the home BL right now. You’re not going to find anything but dead-ends if you only hook up with groups who can only muster 20+ to a keep when they’re winning but never when they’re losing. You never get any better by punching down-weight

Well, what would be the point of a competition if there were no rewards for winning?
Should they remove the price for winning NHL as well, since not all teams are equal?
If, in the NHL, certain teams could field 12 players while others could only field 6, I’m pretty sure that nobody would watch it because there’s no competition in the first place.
Coincidentally that’s exactly what is happening with WvW leagues at the moment.
I love this analogy and not in an Ironic way either. No I love it b/c I don’t have a TV anymore and I miss Hockey with it’s crazy “Too many men on the ice”, “roughing the goalie”, and “2-line pass” type rules. The rink has atleast 4 zones too so there’s lots of room for 2-on-1’s but in none of those zones is 1 team allowed to just ball their defensemen up with their forwards and create a human wrecking ball that just slams through the goalie & then into the net with the puck in-tow. Yet that’s exactly the tactic that all 3 of the Season-winners this year will be employing because they get same amount of points doing that against an empty-net that they’d get for doing it against 6 other guys forming a human wall.

I usually get up like I’m going to the fridge, but instead lately, there’s this other handle I started pulling on attached to some weird door that DOESN’T have beer behind it …. No when I open it, all this freakling light from this yellow orb thing hits me and it’s so much brighter than the little bulb in the fridge. And I hear these sounds like I’m in Queensdale but there’s no champ train rushing by. Sometimes there’s a train, but it goes “HAAAAAWWWWNNNNGGG” * chugga chugga …. chugga chugga * instead of “Troll Oak Spider Boar Troll Oak Shadow…” etc…

I find it odd that I got Advanced Defender (450 kills) DAYS ago, yet I’m still tier 1 or 2 on everything else. Infact that’s the ONLY one I’ve finished apparently ….not that I’ve even cared until seeing this thread so now is literally the first time I’ve opened this panel. …this is …. I dunno what I’m even looking at here. I put down almost 500 YB’s (who actually DO know they’re doing by the way) while being “outgunned” on almost every map, ….and it’s only worth 20 points? while all this other PVD crap adds up to over 100 AP? Am I reading that right??? … I’m not even going to include the jump puzzles in this
Sure I can. But forum comments don’t tell you much about the server. And our BL was bugged last week (constant DC’s), and if you look in the wvw discussion forum here you’ll see a thread with many servers complaining about bugged queues and Devon making a difficult to interpret response which seems to acknowledge it.
Yep this happened…. And it will probably keep happening so long as Anet continues to hide the live population numbers from us. It’s a bad policy in general and no one here should condone it; because just like last week as IOJ demonstrated, it can feel pretty devastating when you’re NOT the server getting some benefit from it.
If it keeps happening, I think we should start recording video of it regardless of who’s BL it happens to (assuming we can even get into that BL). Total attendance for each side in every Borderland and Eternal should be right there on the Top of the zone on everyone’s map. It’s more important than some commander’s tag on your minimap. It’s need-to-know information like the max damage on each weapon you equip. Nor does it ruin anyone’s secret strategies because it doesn’t tell us anything about the skill of the force in that BL. It simply tells us what scale of the expected fights would be so that realistic preparations can happen and QUEUE BUGS can actually be properly reported instead of merely speculated on.
You guys can laugh, but he actually has a points with this post. I so often see people crying about bugs (forums, game, even IRL), and when I ask if they reported it, they always answer either “surely others did”, or “devs don’t care anyway”. For bugs to be fixed, they need to be reported first, and not many ppl do it.

….still no changes infact it only got MORE bugged as time went on and some people are saying it won’t even start as of this last update. Multiple Videos of the problem presented yet no response telling us whether this was ever the intended behavior.
That’s important because most of the problems y’all find with Ranger falls into “Is this intended / just poorly designed / or a total bug?”. Not ever getting responses on those points, even after they increased their QA presence … makes it appear that anything having to do with rangers or AI is just too low of a priority for them to address.
