They have to be. Too many people have been complaining about dungeons being too easy and i’m betting Anet won’t wanna let those people down. It is in the company’s best interest to keep everyone happy meaning that sooner or later there will be really hard dungeons while still keeping easy versions around for casual players. Has been like this in every other MMO i have played.

uh huh… I’m just going to nod my head and not derail this any further.

@ Greg, Gurrrdyan has been so much fun for me that I’ve been completely neglecting all my Alts which is something I never had an issue with in GW1 or any other MMO. If someone’s not having fun on them, I think it’s because they just don’t quite get the whole Consecrations // Battlefield-Architect playstyle with heavy weapon swapping …or they just hate ground targeting or something… (and can’t do it accurately or fast enough). I notice it also takes a while to adapt to releasing one’s virtues more liberally.

Given how easy the dungeons are and how there’s a general lack of gearchecks (Simin notwithstanding), there’s no place for player gear checking. It creates a catch-22 for pugs (must have dungeon exo gear to farm dungeon exo gear) and the players who ‘need’ to gearcheck to filter players are the type of trashy, incompetent player that can’t do content until there’s a huge wiki and video guide for them to slavishly adhere to so they can get carried by the players who actually learned the content and cleared it. Or, they’re the type of imbecile that tries to pug speedclear, which is another barrel of laughs

gear checking, along with other cancer like dps meters or whatever, are features demanded by the impaired so they can substitute metrics for skill

HeeHee… got a kick out of this post, there’s a lot of truth to it too. …Seen players in full exotic who died more often than my level 60 guildmate who was wearing Rares/greens. Even at 80… I completed a lot more dungeons in rare MF%-hybrid gear last month than I’ve done so far in full “soldier’s of the monk” (pure tough/vit/heal) Exo’s this month.

But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t get some kind of inspection panel that tells us the truth about another player’s Spelunking career. We already do that with our Eyes anyway when they join and we notice they’re wearing a bunch of COF/Karma gear and we roll our eyes at the exploits & zerging involved.

Pretty sure this addressess part the OP’s complaint

It’s not a new mind set though and has been happening since the beginning of loot based RPG’s (have many not-so-fond memories myself of fighting my way to Ol’ Diablo in tristram only to be passed by a Warrior in full Whale plate with Apoc staff who just wanted to steal the boss kill to troll everyone else who wanted a shot at better gear).

^That’s correct^, how anyone could have completed this fight multiple times without noticing that, I do not know (unless they themselves were being Carried too).

But as has been said about them multiple times now in multiple threads, there’s other “Bolts” launched out apart from the “red Circle” bolts. And that bolt has no red circle attached to it because it does not have a pre-determined trajectory like all AoE’s have. Infact I’ve seen them land mere feet from my character’s hitbox and not deal any damage. I’ve also changed running directions myself right as it’s being launched which is what all the experienced players will tell you to do to avoid it… only to be hit directly by it when other times I’ve ran in a straight line and watched it literally curve around me somehow. ….Again, it’s not an AoE, it’s not affiliated with those red circles, and its trajectory isn’t a straight line. We probably can’t even trust its particle sprite to synch up with its collision hull since it moves so darn fast and this game lags fairly often.

Reflecting it, gaining Aegis or invuln right as its cast, or just having a ton of hitpoints is about the only way to be completely sure you won’t be downed by it if you’re already injured (and your heal is on recharge). … better yet, just don’t get hit by anything else in the first place. Then you can pop your heal the instant the first random bolt hits you. (it’s very rare for a second one to hit you unless Lupi’s aggro is concentrated 100% on you). …and maybe someone else can confirm if they’ve seen the “Evaded” message when they successfully dodged one? I haven’t noticed but maybe I just didn’t time my dodge perfectly

.
forgot to mention:

Phase3 s much more predictable but can only be soloed if you have a really quick C/D swiftness buff (like guard staff) and Stability boon + Stability trait or some other escape gimmick that won’t reset his aggro like Invis/Camo currently does. An immobilizer also helps a lot.

Suggestions to reduce market manipulation

The real problem for the GW2 economy is that it’s slightly mirroring the real world.

This is my #1 concern. And I definitely didn’t mean to incite any arguments against Mr. Smith and I agree with him very strongly on this:

“Keep in mind there is a difference between Moving along the Supply Demand curves, and shifting the supply demand curves….”

.

Look, I don’t like long analogies but since I suffer “Calculus dyslexia” like most americans, I have to relate this to boolean absolutes to make a case. The opportunity to make bigger profits is based mostly on Volatility. I think we can all agree on that.

We should also be able to agree that “buying low selling high” can be helpful to an economy when it is done in a fashion similar to how a Warehouse operates: which stabilizes volatility. IE: It plays by the rules of having “Overhead” and limited space. Therefore storage = earning potential / time. This creates Certainty and stabilizes prices which benefits Suppliers, most of whom are casual players in the lower end commodities. “A rising tide lifts all boats” and all that good stuff..

.

Where we get into trouble… is with this new video-game version of speculating. Exploitable volatility from massive Transparency issues and even more massive wealth Disparities…. or as FrellingFahr corrently stated: “you artificially inflate prices to make profit on the expense of players who do not know the proper price level” <— where not even the Ratings Agencies would know the proper price levels b/c the math was fudged. And what about Placing and canceling unlimited orders? 3rd party Gold-buyers and Gold-sellers playing by different rules than the rest of us. Bots that create mass volatility in very targeted market sectors. Mass buy-ins or buy-ups to force inflation itself to rise (again, due to lack of transparency). And unlimited orders/bids for a single account with “little tricks” that allow for unlimited potential storage. How much of this do we honestly want to expose ourselves to? And how would we even know when it’s taking place?

This is where I was in agreement with the OP 100% on there needing to be a system of making items Temporarily Account-Bound for a period of time (but allowing Crafting to un-bound them again). ….so that Buying Low and selling high once again resembles Warehousing and manufacturing instead of Flashtrading. That doesn’t remove “flipping” from the game, not by a long shot. It simply puts it on the same set of rules that every other source of income (dungeons, events, crafting) has to play by.

Reviving in general also seems to be the #1 enemy of uncoordinated Teams in this encounter and is one of my top complaints about it as well. Thank you that’s very helpful….

If I’m not mistaken… nearly all condition spec’d Gear never has Vitality as its highest stat but rather tied for second with Pow/Prec? … what might work better here (since DPS isn’t nearly as important as just not being randomly 2-shot seconds apart) … is lots of healing, toughness, vitality, Vigor (as was mentioned already) and full inclusion of Soldier/Shaman’s Runes & Crests….

I’m not saying that it’s fair for so many dungeons to gate their content behind Gear-Score. But chances are very high that the other people you tried this with were also having some issues with the Priority of their Stats and were skewed a bit much towards DPS instead of Survival. (and I’ll try get you into one that prefers survival this week if we get our more reliable regulars together again).

Didn’t you post in the thread dedicated to teaming up for it? I think I added you to /Friends. …First of all post all your gear b/c I just changed my gear the other day and noticed some interesting differences and it’s made Stage 2 easier than when I was running mostly major-mercy runes.

The problem is I don’t think most people can do this with dodging alone which is what the forum blowhards would have you believe(along with their sage-like advice). In this case, I think seeing is doing … as well as running buffs that reduce the impact of stage2’s Randomness. I looked for Youtube videos of this but my Adobe Player plugin Codecs are scrambled so I’ll have to do a full system reset before I can actually see them to recommend one.

Guess what’s going to happen next week when the new completely “unique rewards” Dungeon gets added. There is a flawed development pattern here that you can’t argue with. Sorry.

Today’s “epic gear” is tomorrow’s Kanaxai Axe so the time invested better darn well match the quantity of “timeless” rewards.

…yes… yes that is definitely a problem.

I think the universal solution to this (which also includes other herbs like Vanilla, Sage, Corriander, Oregano, etc — but excludes overly common ones like Thyme & Tarragon) is to have Dungeon mobs drop Herb bags in the next big dungeon update and then maybe double the amount of herb nodes on WvW Borderlands maps as well. Maybe they could put some in sPvP too just so long as it doesn’t become too big a distraction…

Arguments aside… most GW2 dungeons (unlike GW1 dungeons) only take pugs 45 mins on average which points to Arah being way outside the normal scope.

I think a reasonable argument can be made for the length of an average dungeon run versus the rewards and the difficulty. Underworld in GW1 took many hours, making it impossible to do for a large group of players purely due to length.

And skipping most of the content… is that intended design?

To its credit, it also had the biggest Pay out of any Elite area prior to DOA. And before the gimmicks were discovered, a DOA would also take most groups way more than 3 hours and could fail at any time if your UA got snared or KD’d while trying to let a bad pull reset. (and then it was game-over… no popping debt removal, no res’ing at WP, most ppl just rage quit and didn’t get the 4 titan gems that were the whole reason they joined).

Unfortunately, there’s no gimmicks for getting through Arah faster besides running past the trash … but you still have to fight a half dozen Bosses (or literally 2 dozen minibosses in Path1) that take 15 minutes per set b/c they have way too many Hitpoints. This is where I have to repeat the point that…. If your team hasn’t wiped while taking the first 50% of that mob’s HP’s off, 90% of the time, you’re not gonna wipe for the last 50% either. So every path except path 3 could probably stand a massive HP nerf on all these mobs, the Elites especially.

There is NO disagreement on this anywhere. Even in Beta this was the #1 issue with all dungeons and the #1 complaint that Anet never responded to. They respond to every other complaint, bugs especially. But they have yet to address the #1 complaint that huge boring HP-pool timsinks are not fun (and were extremely rare in GW1).

…will indeed repeatedly farm the first one or two bosses to slowly bootstrap themselves into the gear level required to tackle the harder bosses further in the dungeon.

I just find this funny considering that a lot of the dungeons here (atleast originally) put the toughest or most annoying fight in the entire dungeon right towards the front end and once you beat that part, the rest is facerolling. … IE: the Burrower room or Kohler, every path of TA (except Laurent’s knights), Sureshot Seamus, Sorrow’s Path3, Crucible Laser grid, etc… That’s probably why so many newbs gave up too soon on dungeons right after launch.

Personally, I’m really looking forward to Elite mobs sometimes dropping Tokens (atleast that’s what I assume they’re doing) b/c it means that doing the long paths should start to see some advantages over only doing the shortest path.

Tho Anet should also strongly consider having these mobs drop “Herb Bags” b/c of all the common crafting materials I’ve been tracking, Herbs seem to have the most glaring arbitrary supply shortage issue. (and would take the longest time to correct with unnecessary manual labor adding more nodes to older zones)

The Elitism is already there with or without the added Transparency that I’m Condoning. A lot of people tend to forget that those so called “Elites” usually get carried themselves by someone who doesn’t talk nearly as much smack as they do.

Competitive players know this … and you can see it all over the place in WvW chat/boards. The little Dogs that bark the loudest are usually the ones trying to hide something. With a better system of transparency, most of them would be exposed as hypocrites. Or at the very least have Lots of Token tallies but very low Social “+1” tallies when all they do is insult Puggers and blame everyone else when their crutches fail. And that would be a wonderful “Red flag” for the rest of us who don’t want to help people like that.

But more importantly, it gives Pug leaders the information they need to plan ahead and adjust the group’s strategy ahead of time. Will the “jerks” out there use it against newer players? Sure but they’ll be just as exposed to peer review where as they have a much bigger “bullying” advantage right now without it. And just b/c GW2 populace has a higher jerk ratio right now doesn’t mean that will always be the case. It only took about a year for the jerk ratio to dwindle quite a bit in Gw1.

I don’t know what all they did to this part of the path, but I can’t remember the last time I died on this Encounter before this change & I honestly die less in Arah than today’s attempt at this… so I know something’s not scaling right here. These ghosts are either spawning too quick or spawning with Bugged stats. It’s still doable if you go to the far end of the room and “Leash” them but that’s a pretty lame way to beat it now.

It needs to be changed back. There’s much smarter ways to make this path as challenging as the other 2 are.

Skipping Mobs in Dungeons...

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: ilr.9675

ilr.9675

Elite mobs (silver rimmed) hit harder than many Bosses.
Elite mobs almost always spawn in packs of 4 – 6
Elite mobs often chaincast more Crowd Control skills than Epic bosses
Elite mobs sometimes walk right through wards or ignore entire skill mechanics.
Elite mobs are always tougher than level 80 Veteran mobs in normal PvE.
Elite mobs deal damage 2-3x greater than those Veterans regardless of level-scaling.
Elite mobs’ stats aren’t scaled down appropriately either to the recommended level of the dungeon

…yet…

  • They have drop tables based exclusively on their down-scaled level instead of their actual Combat/Damage & HP stats level … which means they typically drop low-tier materials or gear
  • They often don’t drop any materials … least of all “fine” Blue crafting materials that scads of normal PvE mobs constantly drop.
  • They don’t drop money often and when they do, it’s the same amount of copper that normal mobs drop.
  • They rarely ever drop rares, and when they do, it would have been much much faster to have simply filled up on MF% gear instead and gone “herding” up a bunch of regular PvE mobs instead that pose much less threat to even unskilled players. <— meanwhile MF% gear in Dungeons is considered a huge Faux Pas

PS: I’m torn on the running part. I was a huge fan of Running/“Taxi” in GW1 and wrote guides on it. If you have the skill to actually be a great runner, I think Anet supports your decision so long as you’re doing it because it’s exciting and a nice alternative to grind. I can’t stand however… some of these Pugs that assume everyone wants to do it in every single team when some of us came to see the entire path instead of just parts of it.

It’s even worse when they don’t wait up, & and don’t equip support skills that would help their teammates who aren’t used to the run. ….people like that have no business being in Dungeons and need to go back to solo-farming

2. To help parties and guilds gauge a player’s effectiveness in a dungeon, add player inspection to GW2. There is so much more that can and needs to be done towards this end, inspection is not asking for much. I want to know if our party is carrying someone in Cultural Tier 3 with a bad spec and level 65 trinkets, and I want to know when somebody is wearing magic find.

I wholeheartedly endorse this and would take it a step further….

We don’t have to see anyone’s armor piece by piece (not to mention COND, MF% & HEAL stats aren’t even tallied up in the current one), but I think an account-wide career-tally of how many tokens they’ve collected would help. It’d also be great if we had a peer-review option as we see in these forums where if you participated with the player long enough to complete the dungeon, you could choose to Up-Vote their “rep” one time for all 8 dungeons. (or opt out if they were “bad” at it). Like So:

Because they are for “the elite”.
Unfortunately this attitude seems to be shared by the devs, who promised accessibility to all before release and now smugly proclaim “Do story mode!” to casuals, claiming explorables to be for those great awesome super hardcore players

This part I’ll actually take exception with… on the Caveat that we’re being patient & giving Anet more time to get around to it. ….This is also why I’m just laughing at the Slings and Arrows thrown my way by a couple of people here who think they’re so awesome at this game and therefore entitled to more exclusive Aesthetic options than anyone else. …(yet you could count on 1 hand the # of people in this thread who’ve had the skill to survive being Double-Bubbled).

Here’s the facts: There were plenty of encounters just like this in GW1 and Anet eventually made changes that those encounters more multi-faceted. Infact they’ve already TOLD US that they’ll be adding new content to the previous modes that will make these modes more accessible to more players. And once that NEW dungeon comes out that’s directed at their particular Demographic with it’s steady difficulty ramping … this one will no longer be “their Precious”. This was the pattern all throughout GW1 infact … Sorrows replaced Tombs, UW got upstaged by DOA. Ursan made them both Accessible to everyone for a while. And eventually WOC upstaged all of them for needing overwhelming gimmicks in the face of overwhelming odds.

I actually think part of Anet’s iteration process over the years…. is to start off immediately with the Flannum Doctrine (99% sadistic) and then carefully evaluate ways to chip away at their own difficulty over time with subtle but holistic changes such as PvE splits, Consumables, Gizmos, and a host of other things that dedicated casual players eventually gain more and more access to. I’m not sure if these sorts of discussions weigh into that at all… but if they do, I guarantee they tend to filter out the vocal minority Hardcore players who demand exclusivity and I can cite specific MAJOR patches over the past 7 years that support this hypothesis. …that doesn’t mean they only listen to super moderates like me either … but I do think having some modesty (like Nacht has) definitely helps your case

Those knights are the hardest ennemies in TA, including all bosses, which is surprising considering they’re only silver “trash”.

I’d say they’re the hardest hitting enemy in any Dungeon. Every one of their instant-activation attacks seems to one-shot most players. People will claim you can dodge them but what those people are actually doing is anticipating the attack b/c they’ve died to it so many times that they have the “Rote” memorized. But me, I don’t do TA anymore and they’re one of the biggest reasons …and it’s for the same reasons I don’t “Jump through Hoops” to repeat content that’s bugged, b/c it just reminds me that this is a game that was released 2 months ago. It’s not just “unpolished”. It’s a big ugly Goiter. I can’t enjoy that level of un-professionalism in game design, and I couldn’t really get into Gw1 very much either until around 2007 b/c in 2005 & 2006 it still felt so unpolished.

It’s not the most Quick-Thinking kind of hard since that one IMO goes to Seraph CM & Mursaat-Arah. …Even the toughest fight against Subject Alpha doesn’t require the level of resource management that Lupicus has even though I still guarantee it takes better timing & running skills to carry your team against Alpha than against Lupi. But it definitely seems to require quickest reflexes & the most specific class compositions/skills because most encounters are just so claustrophobic. 1 or 2 of the main fights in particular, allow for zero forgiveness.

The best advice I can give is to make sure your group is Melee-Capable and just Stack on him in the Submarine path assuming that still works. It never worked in the other 2 path but the last 2 fights against him on Submarine, that felt like the Easy Win to me… So if you have difficulty with that path then I’d say the others will never be in your reach unless you hire a team of pros to carry you through them. (or you glitch Alpha like I’ve seen a few unscrupulous puggers doing)

.

PS: I agree the Bomb Golem events are fun & wish more of the dungeon was like that

HotW set rehaul necessary

I can’t stand armors with particle effects. Those Ecto Gloves ruined GW1 and CoF armor reminds me of a bad Nicholas Cage movie. I just got the Heavy Pants from HotW and I couldn’t be happier b/c they’re the closest thing I’ve found yet to the Aureate (Dwarven) Monk Leggings. Particles or other gaudy stuff would just get in the way of the only decent looking “Caster” set for us Soldiers.

What do you call it when a small elite group of people take it upon themselves to decide that almost everyone else who doesn’t think like them should be excluded from something really important?

I don’t like throwing labels around and I know Anet doesn’t endorse it either so I won’t hazard a guess here….

I just want to point out that Arah contains what is perhaps… THE MOST PIVOTAL historic lore about the ancient races that any Gw1 lore junkie could ever want. And missing out on it just because 1 boss has a few too many luck based mechanics that us overly skilled players deem “avoidable” … is really unfair to those people who deserve to see the story first hand with their own friends (instead of having to pay several Gold to have some “Pros” run it for them like it was Rraggarr’s or Shard of Orr).

Suggestions to reduce market manipulation

market manipulation.

… well that’s unfortunate that the head Econ guy doesn’t see “Flipping” as Manipulation.

I’m just curious what else you’d call it when the entire point is to manipulate the final sales price for a bigger profit on something that would have been a lot cheaper if there was no short-term speculating middlemen driving up the prices.

Phase 2 is very luck based …. get a Mix of Clerics + Shaman’s Gear (Vitality + Heal) to take some of the Luck out of it.

Or…. make sure your party has Guards/Mes with Reflect utilities to block those Random-Pathed (unpredictable trajectories) Green bolts that fly out after or between the AoE bolts.

And yes, all of these bolts definitely need either a damage nerf or smaller “Collision-Hulls” so that their threat level actually matches their “Red Circles”.

I think they’re “Fun” … [[ TL;DR summary at bottom of post]]
And I’m not trying to be a fanboy either…. my Guild at launch had >100 players. There’s now 3 of us left b/c WvW and Dungeons completely failed their expectations. That’s over 97 people who all agreed it wasn’t Fun. ….anyhoo….

I think they’re “Fun” so long as it’s still fresh to your Team, and your team is actually able to Roll-Through each path at a good Clip. That doesn’t mean Speedclearing either, it just means killing the mobs quick enough without a whole lot of defeats along the way. We can talk about all the other things that could change in the future like animations, and overhauling mechanics …..LATER…. right now let’s focus on “Pacing”.

Several Paths in some of these dungeons definitely don’t live up to that “Fun” description for me either though. The Entirety of Arah for example. Even when you nail Lupicus on the first attempt, you still had to contend with between 30-100 “Elite” and Champion mobs that just grind the pacing & fun of the game to a Halt. …which isn’t even something we had to deal with in UW & DOA. Yeah there were some tough mobs in those Zones too but not even in the Tar Pits where you’re literally slogging through Tar, did it feel like you were Slogging through the Mobs as well. And the Bosses are even worse sometimes, especially when they’re big boring mostly immobile bosses you’re not supposed to group-Melee b/c they just spray 2-shot kills all over the place. (like Subject Alpha & those first Wurms you come to in every path of both CoE & TA Exporables)

.
.

  • TL;DR Summary: If you get any of these mobs down to 50% HP, and your whole party hasn’t wiped yet… 90% of the time, you’re NOT GOING TO WIPE for the last 50% either. So the Mobs in these Sloggier-Paths just need Better A.I., but half the HP, and then Dungeons will feel a lot faster to a lot more people. Not most people, but a lot more people than there are right now like me who are simply immune to Arbitrary time-sinks.

.

PS: FoW was AMAZING for less coordinated guilds & PuGs. Yeah it was too easy for our Uber Guilds, but a super majority of average players all seemed to agree it was the best Elite Area.

Considering the sheer response to this, just on people needing an Arah EXP Team… I’m wondering if this shouldn’t be officially sanctioned into a Guild that actively builds itself in-game. …I mean it’s clearly quite the Niche.

No offense to my fellow Ascended…. but when I saw we were ending up in 4th tier this week, I changed my weekend plans from DubVee to Dungeons. Thanks to everyone who showed up anyway and carried the rest of us who were too busy farming the MK chest to farm Yaks

/Applauding this fix. …This is a GOOD example of when something clearly needs to be “Smiter’sBooned” for the interum

Anyone who disagrees…. go look at the situation Blackgate is in right now. Outmanned and outgunned but the biggest thing keeping the match close was Orb parity.

Harder paths should definitely have their drop tables simplified to reward NOTHING but 1 or 2 good drops. And easier paths can keep rewarding a buncha green crud/tonics since new players usually accept quantity over quality.

Someone on another board had a great comment about this sort of thing….

Holy Trinity was just 3 Roles. This game still has Roles.
You’re just not locked into them based on class.

People who haven’t found ways to make those roles just as effective as the old trinities, haven’t tried hard enough or just can’t read cast animations fast enough. Yeah the bosses all have too many hitpoints for non-80 players to contend with in a quick enough fashion. But there’s nothing preventing complete minmaxxing of your Role besides your own decisions.

.

As for pulling aggro… I’ve held many many boss Aggros from start to finish several dozen times now for my guildies and I didn’t have to do anything besides change my Gear. It automatically locks onto me as soon as I step in range and I tank them without issue.

To the posters that are disrespectful toward devs

People are upset because they’re passionate about the game (which is awesome) and they want it to live up to its full potential.

I don’t take negative posts personally. Rather, I try to put myself in their shoes, listen to what they’re really trying to say (once you get past the rage), and try to find a way to fix the cited issues, if I think they’re good for the game.

I’m rather concerned none the less. We went through this years ago on the Gw1 Wiki and eventually, Fatigue set in. Devs are human beings too and eventually the rote memory of it all day-in-day-out just leads to skimming which leads to missing really solid suggestions… or worse, taking suggestions but then missing the entire reason that they were suggested so that the outcome …. umm how do I put this without sounding snarky towards sPvP … Doesn’t just resemble Codex with the limited map rotation of Costume Brawl, and the same missing Ranking/Ladder system that forces Pro Guilds to constantly wreck Pubbers in every single arranged team game.

Not at all implying this is how it is now; that’s just how things ended up, all because the Community itself refused to learn how to speak more eloquently when addressing both eachother, and the Designers. I really hope they listen up this time and practice some self-moderation so these boards won’t require so many paid moderators. It’s really giving the entire community (and the staff) a bad reputation among many unofficial GW fansites.

  • *On the positive side of things…. I was delighted to read that the Designers are keeping a close eye on Defensive cooldowns versus Spiking/Pressure potential. Yes there’s some organized teams that will do ridiculous things with Bunkering tactics but we know Anet doesn’t use those teams as the baseline.
