Straights of Devastation definitely need some help
I doubt Anet’s going to make the changes necessary (IE: making an “Intranational” instance that everyone accross every server can meet in) Therefore we’d have to find some kind of player-coalition in-game where everyone guested to a single server to keep open and working like D.E.‘s were supposed to work. And I don’t think this community has the leadership and determination frankly to do that unless there was a drastic enough change in the Drop Tables to incentivize it first
Hell yeah, I wear the Wolf Mask on my brown&beige leather clad female character whever she goes and I can’t wait for someone to PM me in game and say “you look ugly”…. meanwhile it’s coming from someone who looks exactly like everyone else in the entire game… IE: either a flower backed barbie doll in pink/blue, or ‘perfect haired’ Bishnonen thief trying to be every cliche` weeaboo ken doll ever.
I want characters, that HAVE character. …even just at a glance.
I’m handsome enough in real life, I don’t need to compensate for it in-game thanks.

LOL, GoonsOnline is still basically the “one to beat” even if MMORPG’s primary love affair has always always been with Guildwars…
This is indeed a popcorn and cake worthy thread, I look forward to its Candle in the Wind vigil upon its untimely demise
If it’s so fun 10 months out… why do you spend all your time on the forums instead?
I remember the one time I took Part in the a Grenth that actually SUCCEEDED… and I think was was in January maybe before they royally screwed it up worse…
I noticed the same pattern with people no releasing b/c the run back to was too long… and right down the path we came from near that Melandru Statue area was a Contestable Waypoint. After the Shade stage was clear and a Kiting-Monk-Healer (me) wastn’t needed anymore, I went back to that WP and single handedly kept it unconstested in my Monk gear along with Staff & Hammer and that’s how it was finally won…
Probably the single most substantial contribution I ever felt I made to a Meta Event…
…in ANY mmo game. It was almost as hard as soloing Giganticus Lupicus
(edited by ilr.9675)
Only thing in this Thread worth repeating, is that COF needs to be brought in line with other Dungeons and Anet won’t likely do that until this ‘end of Summer’ Rewards overhaul.
Tradepost flipping is obviously something that we’re stuck with as long as John Smith is the acting “C.F.O.”. He’s a very clever fellow and will enforce this justification at the slightest provocation using very technical and assuring real-world market rhetoric in a tone much like that Krait Oil salesman we hear everyday in L.A. (and that’s exactly what I want everyone to audibly visualize, everytime they hear a justification for Market Speculating). But the real truth is that it just makes his Job a lot easier…
And that’s what this is really about. Anet won’t throw redundant effort at everyone’s little personal Crises` until there’s a way to do it over the horizon that makes their jobs easier. U.W. overhaul, perfect example of this… came side-by-side with the shadowtank change. These problems with player rewards are in the same boat, they don’t have a robust framework for it yet so bear with the stupid mini-metas in the meantime.
Not much…
WvW and FOTM is the only things I still see going on with a regular “player base” behind them.
I haven’t seen a single guild yet that does Dynamic Events, and very very few left that do dungeons (which you’re definitely not prepared for yet until you get a full set of either Vitality or DPS exotics)
In that “Other MMO” when the big world dragons spawned, I remember entire guilds wiping (BIG guilds) and it taking a substantial effort to kill them. The rewards were good too, at the time. I realize they were uber in the day, and with the progression since then, they might be a joke. But i’d still like to see GW2 world boss events of that level of difficulty.
Priests of Grenth & Balthazar are actually HARDER than that even. (the big “catch” being gimmicky mechanics involved though). Straights of Devastation Chain is also just as epic on a map-wide scale and requiring just as much if not more coordination than WvW ever did. Yet…that entire zone is empty as heck except for a few Lemongrass farmers up in the tiny little corner of it that stuff like that actually grows in. (hmm… I wonder if linking NODES to event chains could be part of the solution??)
…I think Goldenwing just made another great point
Do you realize how many people tried Guild Wars 1 and didn’t get into it at all because it wasn’t fun to them? Fun is very subjective.
Uhh yeah… because that’s EXACTLY what I said in that post. Or did you just see “fun” and skim past the rest of it?
I don’t think it’s actually all of these things everyone else is bringing up…
I think it’s a lot more … Complicated … than that.
When GW2 finally released, I remember Penny Arcade (one of Anet’s best convention partners over the years) having their main comic character ask “Why isn’t GW2 FUN?”.
Well, it IS fun the first week. It’s even fun the next week you come back to it after a good long break… But it’s not sustainable fun like GW1 was. Nor is it sustainable & endlessly replayable fun like Starcraft/Diablo2 was. It’s definitely not “Actiony” fun like TF2 and DOTA seem to be ….and for most of the people it was obviously Aimed at instead: wasn’t actually TimeSink fun like WOW b/c I guess the feeling of “progression” just stopped dead in its tracks after 80. (especially with crafting & “combat” unlocks)
This doesn’t mean it failed at what it was intended to be. It just means that we don’t actually know*WHAT*they intended to begin with and until we do, we can’t really offer any simple suggestions for fixing how UnFun it is over longer stretches of playtime.
Keep in mind that GW1 even AFTER all its improvements over a 5 year span to become what it was after EOTN, still wasn’t the most inviting experience for any of the bandwagon riders who decided they wanted to get in on the H.O.M. rewards ahead of time == because they all bought the Hype that the industry was getting itself into over GW2’s upcoming release (at the time).
Some of us GW1 people were a lot less enthused about the details that WE SAW of the game and our years of experience with Anet had already tempered our expectations. We knew ahead of time that lots of parts of it still weren’t going to appeal to the widest base possible and a lot of us even dreaded the reality that most of it wasn’t going to even appeal to us “b/c it was being made for a new demographic”.
(edited by ilr.9675)
I don’t know if we needed three posts for all this…. but this definitely needed Two posts so I therefore agree 100% with 66% of these statements
Well stated, and more than just well-intentioned.
Another thing we really really need is “Combined” Zones in NA and EU… Perhaps call it the “In*tra*national” instance. Basically just one set of all the zones for NA, and another set for EU that’s meant to get EVERYONE accross all 20 servers into the same zone and stop these older zones from feeling SO EMPTY ALL THE TIME.
(edited by ilr.9675)
What? they made it easier?
Oh boy, it’s Thunderhead all over again…
I’m still doing my personal story (for the first time! …believe it or not) and I was worrying I couldn’t actually find a team to do this b/c it was boring enough the first time. And here I am going through all these Pact dialogues with a DragonsDeep Exotic on my back simply b/c I had an over-abundance Arah Tokens. I dunno if it’s ironic or just sad?
It definitely cuts into the suspense of any situation the storyline tries to raise and knowing it’ll take some major arm twisting just to see the Epilogue… Ugh.. Y U DO dis Anet. WTB heroes/mercenaries… NOW
(edited by ilr.9675)
They should just fold inward stay still when NOT moving (or when walking).
I don’t see the problem yet with their speed when characters are running full speed.
Hello all, let’s keep in mind that this was just one change, it isn’t intended to be the one saving grace of the whole economy it was simply a market correction.
Standard: We saw that dust was too expensive and it wasn’t on a correcting trend. We made it easier and more prevalent to get dust without any major changes to the current balance.
We wanted a shift of the supply curve for dust without change the balance too much in any other markets, we were making a change in pseudo isoloation (bisolation if you will).
Well I ain’t gonna argue it’s effectiveness… I just thought it was a pretty “odd” move in general (we’re doing WAHT to our ectos?? feels so…wierd)
EDIT: Oh right, shards/fragments should be dealt with later… according to https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/T6-Dust-Crisis/page/7#post2193354
This better make Chests @ the ends of jumping puzzles actually worth popping And Champ mobs worth fighting. So tired of empty zones and Stalemating against so many events & champs just b/c I don’t have a second player to help beat their natural regen.
(edited by ilr.9675)
TIL adding a toggle after 9 months of begging = high priority list.
+1
Why did right-clicking EVER make us attack/use stuff in the first place by Default??
I’ll never understand that one :P (it never did this in Gw1 which had almost IDENTICAL mouse functionality)
lulzy thread here.
I like how…
People who are bad at socializing in general, are so unpracticed at restraint & “filters” in every day contact with the rest of humanity WILL do stuff exactly like this. They’ll just yell out in chat the most selfish basement dwelling instigations right across Lion’s Arch and then get offended & find a way to escalate it when they get laughed at. A normal person just walks away and learns something from it usually. (or pouts quietly).
No one hated “skill” in GW1 either… What they hated was Rank-Snobs and other n00bs who were so afraid of carrying a team (& then maybe losing anyway b/c they weren’t THAT good), that they’d boil every group recruitment down to “Meta Teams” of other boring Grinders instead of facing the unpredictable. That’s not being “good”, That’s just called being afraid of dying in a video game
Yeah that’s another thing… there shouldn’t be a Single Event in Orr that NPC Allies stay dead in (not even the “red-shirts”) or fail b/c any of them died. Anet needs to get smarter “Fail conditions”…. ones that actually feel like Attrition has taken place. Especially when any of the mobs that show up, don’t drop l00t. ….At that point there’s no Reward, therefore Risk should also be obey the same trend b/c at that point a lot of players are just doing Volunteer work to see the event through….
The scaling is BAD is when you want to try anything but Cursed shore in this part of the world. I can’t find ANY players doing events anywhere near “Straits” now.
They need to find a way to get people back together again… Maybe put districts back in so people can choose to all pile into one single NA or EU instance for each zone… like a version of the zone that’s not on their home server but a concentrated instance for those who don’t want to get stuck soloing (& can’t convince their guildies to come do old Events)
Anet needs to make money to keep their staff employed so content can keep coming in.
What “content”?
It’s all been this “limited edition” impulse stuff since the game started basically. Or just more cash shop stuff. Or a combination of both just to get a few gullible ppl to buy gold with Gems but it’s questionable that’s working at all with the direction Gems keep going. What’s worse: We can’t even go back and PLAY a bunch of the content that the game launched with (b/c it takes multiple people and those zones are empty now).
We’re actually losing content (and players)… B/c they refuse to make the old content playable again and this new stuff doesn’t even qualify as content.
(edited by ilr.9675)
Also, shouldn’t it really be a mini holographic dragon on some kind seen as it’s the dragon bash event? o.0 … oh and I hope the shattered wings look like Kerrigan’s from starcraft 2 and not those midgety, hyper-active spyro wings.
There’s already an Item code posted on the Wiki you can just input in /say,
…and then right-click preview… No spoilers but, they do look better than the other wings
/Signed…
…But only b/c I can spawn them to FIGHT OTHER MOBS in tricky high zone areas. lol.
They’re like digimons on demand
You guys who bought them on the first day… DID realize going into it, that all that would accomplish was keeping the price higher, longer, right?
In a week or two, the same investment could have gotten you 5 of them… which you could have sold post-event for a profit…
Why are people even farming the lowby zone Holograms??
I was in Orr last night and every other mob dropped coffers, it was getting seriously annoying b/c I wanted DUST instead. …but hey, no waiting around for more of them to spawn, they’re EVERYWHERE. Most Dragon’s minions are and it seems they drop coffers the most either way. So ppl should stop camping and just go do what they’d normally do, just like in GW1 anytime Bday cakes & vic tokens were popping…
100.000 * 5c = 500.000c = 50g
They are 60g now so I don’t think they will get any cheaper than this… Which is too bad, I really like these wings. If it went down to 2c, then it would only be 20g. No worries, it seems that these are slowly going to get flooded. At the moment there are 2 wings being sold around 40g.
Supply in action… now there’s getting darn near 200 available, and the price dropped way below their Token’s Merching value the first day after it just started it. WTG Art Team… shoulda left the Grid off. This isn’t Tron, it’s supposed to be Guildwars / Canthan Festival.
BOOOO… they’re dropping in price already.
They’re already worth less than a chili or 3 pods of Vanilla
(last night they were 6)
100.000 * 5c = 500.000c = 50g
They are 60g now so I don’t think they will get any cheaper than this… Which is too bad, I really like these wings. Don’t like the Shattered ones, one bit.
Quoting for Truth… even if the Wings look dorky with that needless Grid texture on them, people will still know what they’re worth just b/c they’ll figure out what the Base Tokens are worth.
Thanks for supporting Aion next expantion.
I LoL’d
It’s true too if “NC West” is still all bundled under the same flawed accounting dumptruck but just under a different name…
You know that the wings are alrdy for sale in TP for 50g, right?
And will probably drop even more, cause they drop from normal chests
Oh goody… more RNG.
Everyone’s been screaming at Anet to cut down RNG, and what do they do?
Do we all have go to Washington and camp out on their front Lawn before they’ll get the clue? Also why are these things not account bound to begin with…
.
EDIT: Oh boy….. NVM… just previewed these wings off the TP, and jeez… The constant flapping is one thing (do they REALLY to do that if you’re not even moving??…that’s gonna get really annoying, really fast in L.A.) … but the dorky ‘Grid’ texture is really too much. They’re the right size but I’m a lot less excited about these things than I was originally. If they majorly drop in price, I’ll only be getting them to I can sell them for a higher price 4-6 months from now.
(edited by ilr.9675)
15 T5 materials: varies, but a cheap on is Large Bones == 14.25 silver (95c per)
IIRC, blood and scales are “historically” cheaper than bones right now. Been stocking up on them myself right now since the only reason to ever make Carrion stuff in the past was for the Ecto salvage or Mystic Toilet gambling… It’s these other mats that people actually want for their gear rather than just the rough “equivalent values” in Ectos…
Someone who really plans ahead right now… could definitely be setting their future crafting Alts up for some much improved Profits (assuming they haven’t already grinded their way to Master Craftsman)
(edited by ilr.9675)
Am I the only one who keeps thinking bad stuff everytime he sees this Thread Title?
Sometimes I think the people who set up these forums did half the stuff they did as part of a social experiment and it’s gradually elevating on its own to the dubiousness of an asuran experiment
After coming back from a long break… the first thing I get roped into is a COE and right on the first Alpha encounter I got downed b/c I forgot he has that secondary instant & nearly-invisible Ground-Spikes attack with no Red Rings. It’s not a 1-hitter obviously but if you forget to pop the right food and he catches you slacking on popping your main heal… it’s a GG’er.
so yeah… it happens. These things would be even MORE boring than they already are if none of us ever made any mistakes on them.
Thanks a lot for catching this and spreading the word about it.
It’s not much but it is indeed news
This is what Regina always did on the wiki too…
If you have to “forward” stuff to people to get them to see it, it goes without saying that they weren’t interested enough to actually do anything about it in the first place. I think a lot of us accepted a long time ago that Anet’s devs are always going to do what they think is best for the game. And that’s fine. Design is an “Art” first & foremost. Rushed content that people clearly weren’t enjoying themselves making, is the WORST content and we don’t want anymore more of that thanks. But they still do owe the paying customer some sort of best-guess as to when they can get back to this aspect of the game.
If it was important enough to have its own separate forum, then it’s important enough to keep a schedule posted so that everyone who takes a break from it knows WHEN to come back. That’s been the whole point of Guildwars since 2005… we’re not supposed to be only playing one part of it all the time. It’s supposed to be something we can put down and come back to later. So just clarify when “Later” should be, and everything will be squared away here.
(edited by ilr.9675)
If your wanting “FPS” style fighting, you came to the wrong game.
LOL.
Knew you’d do that…. just generalize everything about it down to point and click.
Good job. B/c RPG is also just point and click too. And it was clear from the start that Anet wanted this game to be a hybrid between Action and RPG. I don’t know where you were 6 years ago when it was first revealed…
But it’s clear you aren’t interested in the full depth of this issue. Not dissing here, just saying we’re at an impass until you acknowledge their past history, especially with Competitive play.
<snip>.
Spare us the Rant. Gw1 PvP was boring too. …assuming anyone could even play anything above RA due to the Rank snobbery.
Where people keep getting that?
It used to be an exact quote from the ranger description page on this very site.
It appears that they’ve since updated the page.
And then midway through development, Isiah said that they were refocusing that specialization to ranged Damage… Which would have been great except that: 1: The Distance advantage over other classes is unnoticeable in many cases. 2: nearly all dungeons are very claustrophobic leaving no option for longer ranged fighting. 3: Melee DPS > Ranged when you can just stack the mobs up (& even some bosses) around a column & then glitch their A.I.
And even then… it was apparent as soon as Beta started that they were wrong anyway when Rifle & LB warriors were making rangers look bad on ranged damage but everyone else was crying that Greatsword Rangers did too much damage which got that only other hope nerfed instantly.
Anet has no stated “Vision” for the Ranger anymore. They might have started off with one involving the Pet, but the bugs they were having with keeping the A.I. responsive (and all the other bugs) just demolished any long term confidence in pets being a consistent bridging point between Theory and Execution.
Well that was my next question…
How Viable would ranger actually be at getting dead people back up in combat?
Even with Quickness, it feels REALLY REALLY slow still for me. Is there any Trait/Gear specs that would make it viable or are we just plain doomed b/c most of the people that always die in our party, always died right in Melee Range to the boss (and no one else can pull the boss out that range?).
Is it even possible to Taxi ourselves back “out of combat” in a fight to regain that triple Rezzing speed? I’m guessing it’s not? When anyone in our party is still in Combat, we can’t even switch skills now? (there goes my old Sure-fire tactic for beating Lupicus by switching skills between stage 2 & 3!!)
This thread was created through the eyes of sPvP/WvW, but I am glad that you have brought up a stand point from a PvE aspect. While I will agree that there could be modifications for such, I think it’s more of a minor issue. Since the game tends to lean more towards PvP, but that does not mean it should go ignored. Not wanting to cut anything out, PvP or PvE
understood…. but if you’re really serious about PvP, then you have to Parlay to the more competitive mentality which is basically the opposite direction you went in. IE: We’d need instead for the mechanics of Ranged-fire on this class to be changed themselves. …To manual aiming & prediction like the most handicapped Snipers in any game that bothers to “simulate projectiles”. Introducing crosswinds and arrow-drop, etc. …stuff that the casual players tends to throw their hands up at and say “I can’t hit anything!!”. Which is basically where we’re already at right now except that even the better players can’t hit anything at a “gamechanging” distance or angle from what everyone else can already hit things at. :\
Also this conundrum with “Pets dealing too much spike damage in PvP” was actually a carry-over from GW1 after they buffed pets there. (I was a major contributor to those discussions with Lindsey at the time and so was Auron <—who’s a lot better known in most GW communities than I am of course).
Point is: you have to cater this towards your RAWRs, your Aurons, even the Elitist PVP’ers among Anet’s own dev team to expect any passage in PvP in spite of the ironic fact that all that does is make PvP even more niche and less appealing to the casual player. That’s just the direction they’ve always gone in. Their catering is selective. They are the Anti-League-ofLegends team basically… Doing their best to divert as many PvE resources as they can sneak out of NC’s coffers towards the Tourney PvP ideal. No viable auto-attack builds, no “smarter pets” playing the game FOR YOU, no Buffs for Stowing, no DMG buff wellfare for Baddies, Definitely no 2000 range auto-sniping, no QQ’ing, FINAL DESTINATION.
(edited by ilr.9675)
I’m going to assume… that the changes to how a team “Dies” in a dungeon is another big factor in why Non-Rangers, and “Zerker” builds in general are seen as so much better than Tanky, Survivalist, & Healer builds.
Before this change… a “Survivalist” Ranger was still considered a very solid addition to any Dungeon that had a long run back to the Boss-Fight from the Respawn WP. …so was a cautious Guardian. Upon returning on MY Guardian, I’m discovering that even the once MOST demanded Class-Build in the game, is now considered sub-par. This makes me a lot angrier at the community in general than it does at Anet speifically.
I built my Guardian for Dungeons and team support… nothing else. When GW2 launched, having 2 or even 3 of us in a party was still considered a Net-Gain b/c everyone didn’t have every single dungeon boiled down to it’s most barebones Exploits at that point. So everyone was just “learning” the dungeons at that time and NEEDED those extra buffer zones that us surivival & support guys provided.
This is mostly a community-inflicted Wound here IMO. It’s really no wonder that Anet has completely stopped most of its own support of Dungeons now. (no responses in that sub forum for 7 months I’m told… exactly how long I took a vacation from the game). There might be some things the Devs * could * do to open Dungeons back up but this whole “reduce HP’s of some bosses but don’t let anyone respawn till the whole party wipes” was actually one of the more common community Requests IIRC…
The community sometimes gets exactly what it asks for, but then it just taints it…
Dungeons, and the Ranger, probably won’t really be fixed until Anet figures out a way to fix them that won’t just get instantly tainted.
(also…)
(they apparently forgot to cut “Defiance” on the Bosses in half…)
(y’know… so we could actually stand a chance of CC’ing them)
(edited by ilr.9675)
More range wouldn’t help us in Dungeons where we really need the most help.
Some things that would help:
- Pet regains attack of opportunity / opening strike anytime you recall it out of the radius of a telegraphed attack. (cannot trigger more than once ever 5 seconds).
- While near you in Passive mode, your pet grants your weapon bar & traps up to a 66% cooldown reduction. This bonus resets back to 15% every time your pet receives damage, and it takes 15 seconds to fully scale back up.
- Spirit Evolution: When your pet is defeated, all Party members gain 10 seconds of Stability, and 20 seconds of Vigor.
(edited by ilr.9675)
“Did ya get that thing I sent ya?”: Load every pet you’ve collected, one at a time, into a nearby catapult. They land with half health but are enraged and will do double crits & damage to the nearest target in a 1200 radius
Bet they’d be watching this forum like a hawk if Dungeons had given us even a tiny bit of Gems for our troubles. … even if it was only “capped” to a Monthlies per unique path. … that or we just don’t talk enough about kittens, pie, and awful 80’s references.
In my opinion, dungeons are lacking on providing money vs the inflation of the economy, the reward is always 26s at the end + 16s end boss (+more if omnom bar) + rng on core/mat drops. Never changes, even though the price of your legendary goal keeps going up.
…well what you get at the end, just makes ppl speedrun past everything & glitch everything harder instead of doing all the fights. Pretty sure we’ve all been over this a 100 times by now and so has Anet…
I think one major reason FOW & UW were also better reward wise was that fact you could get shards as drops just by clearing the trash mobs. We don’t get any Crafting Shards from the trash here.
And the ones we get from the chests just makes the disparity issue worse when there’s obviously some dungeons that most people hate running. … in the case of some of these, like Charged whatevers… We’d need the wambo combo of lots of Fragments dropping all the time, along with lots of PvP’ers using their Laurels+Glory to make them into Loadstones. …That’d already be happening maybe if there was atleast a place to get lots of Shards and Frags to drop from trash mobs but there just isn’t. (and there COULD be)
(edited by ilr.9675)
Lol… NO. You’re lucky to get one Core out of COE
I think I’d rather see ppl making money offering a real Service (running, w/e) and atleast playing PARTS of the game, than what all the Flippers & botters do all day….
Even when you try to show the exploits to Anet, they’re all like “yeah yeah whatever we already know” without even making sure you’re talking about the same ones
(edited by ilr.9675)
Thursdays and Fridays .. pay day
That doesn’t make sense… Gems would be driven DOWN if ppl were using parts of their IRL Paychecks every friday. (which begs the question… WHY AREN’T THEY?). Nah it looks more like the only ppl still playing this game the most are the free-loaders. (proud to be a free loader myself just like I was in GW1).
PS: ridiculous Animal Hoodies…
Anet could stop this entire self-defeating cycle if they just removed that 30% penalty from people who exchange their Gems for Gold…. (shoulder that entire sink/penalty on the people turning Gold back into Gems…)
(edited by ilr.9675)
Really… which Cores & Loadstones exactly come from COF? (& might possibly go up in price when speedclears get “ANETTED”?)
Oh look, we’ve got an altruist here.
I’m an altruist and even I LOL’d.
Here’s a better idea…. Anet stops being lame, and just overhauls this awful dungeon instead of overhauling AC like it did which NO ONE WAS ASKING FOR. Or if they’re too busy to use their awesome one of a kind special snowflake brains for anything but new Ascended items and CashShop gear… post a Fan Contest to come up with the most inventive but practical ways to redo COE….
There, that last one’s a lot more altruistic b/c it trusts their fanbase to do the right thing (instead of just promoting another boring farm)

It summons hands up to hold you down. If you’re held down, the beast is going to cut your head off! Sounds like potential for some pretty good game mechanics. If you’re wondering from where I got the picture, it was from an earlier article advertising gw2.

Uhh no…
- That’s not a Giant, it’s just a regular Ogre Champ @ exaggerated Perspective.
- Most good Artists use illusion & perspective.
