I think it comes down to the skill of individual players; When i first joined WvW a group of seven including myself were taken out by an engineer. Today I watched a video of some player calling themselves the ‘best player in the world’ – yeah they were okay for a ranger me thinks. Having the right build for your character plus being a quick thinker goes a long way. Learned the hard way myself more than once because of my indecisiveness at times.
Ros is a medium pop server from memory although you would not think so at times, especially in PvE. Then you head to Lion’s Arch for some reason or another and the numbers there are large or you have a living world event like clock work chaos – players come out of the wood work. There were huge amounts of people battling Scarlet’s minions. My guess is a percentage of players only log on when new living world content is on offer as they achieved everything else in the game they wanted to achieve.
Has happened to me as well; Always put it down to my ping rate/latency as this has also happened in other online games. The dolyaks behave strangely if a supply camp has been captured, one minute they’re in front of you next they have vanished its quite amusing as a ranger firing at the dolyak ahead of you and watching the bow firing backward.
Sadly this is what WvW has become. It’s no longer about having epic battles between 3 armies, not knowing who will be victorious in the end. It’s just become a huge farming mode. You either farm them, or get farmed yourself. They can easily fix this and there have been many suggestions on how to fix the population imbalance and horrible matchup system. But Anet likes how things are because it means more money for them because people are hopping servers all the time. They don’t realize that they’re screwing themselves though. It may be making them money now, but when another MMO that has decent and balance realm vs realm combat, they’re going to lose a lot of people and a lot of money when everyone jumps ship for an MMO that can deliver what we’ve been asking them to change.
Like ros finally experienced against blacktide & arborstone during the last two days of the match up. Numbers were sufficient to produce a few great large scale battles while trying to capture stuff and also while defending keeps. It was fun, helluva lot of fun, the way most match up’s were a few month’s back.
This isn’t a thread about Ajax Blue? You must be a mouth breather.
fixed that for you
um no

Hahahaha – what a laugh
How to you keep everyone informed on the the two lower ranked servers they are joining forces? Taking in account you can have a lot of individual players, small guilds or a few players from guilds and players playing in different time zones. Anet would need to introduce an option to allow two servers to cooperate so all players on those servers knew what is happening when they enter W v W?
With our current match up (ros) against vabbi & wsr it could be the perfect scenario for the latter two sides to join forces considering how lop sided the match is.
Haha; ros has captured towers numerous times without golems & trebs. What can you do if a commander decides to attack a tower a certain way? Assuming the ‘4 dudes’ held them off? cata’s are good if you cannot get to the gate safely to place rams. small number of players can hold off larger groups if they have their defense set up, it’s not uncommon.
The only difference between an invader & a bronze invader is the amount of time the person has played world vs world. Sure you get skill points for siege & so forth. My title is bronze recruit and I am under no illusion a level 1 player could kill me off in a one on one situation.
One thing none of us take into account are people leaving the game or getting sick of world vs world; you see the same happen in a lot of online gaming – really popular for 6-8 months then people start losing interest, leaving the ‘hardcore’ fans to continue playing. The same will happen with PvE as well, providing its not the case already. The day might arrive when there are less servers to choose from because of a decline in player numbers across the board.
Last time we played vabbi it was the same scenario (vabbi &fow); ros held all the maps most of the week; every time I logged in to see what was going on everything was green with 600 points or thereabouts.
As for the numbers; ros needed a boost as I stated in previous posts numbers were down because guilds/people had moved to other servers. when the next reset happens on Saturday morning my time zone the extra & returning players may well be needed to combat sides like fsp, blacktide, rof or whoever are matched up against ros.
As for camping in supplies camps etc; right or wrong it happens. Millers Sound did exactly that to us the one time we came up against them. Players camped in supply camps, towers & keeps. Understand the frustration though because if its like the experience ros had we got steam rolled most times we tried to recapture anything and to make things worse players disappeared when the going got tough not to be seen again until the following match up.
Taking away magic find cut down the amount of rare & exotics.
I’ve had my share of rare loot in world vs world then again I don’t play world vs world for the loot so it’s a nice bonus. Probably the best item received was on Friday, a keg of wxp which raised my level by 3 in one hit. You can get good crafting material from world vs world.
Arborstone & Dz are good match ups for ros; we played abortstone in the last round. some of the battles were fantastic.
Ros end up with zergs as there are a lot of small guilds or individual players from different guilds. During my time on ros only ever witnessed two-three guilds running by themselves (vcy & dex & sometimes riot). Riot & vcy moved elsewhere & dex just transferred back.
Wait until you encounter zergs from high populations servers if ever unlucky enough to be matched against one. So many players they can control every map, place scouts in all locations & attack you anytime you try & capture a supply camp, tower or keep. Not unusual to see 70 + people running around attacking.
Kind of funny as ros had been matched up against blacktide more often than not over the last month, we were playing blacktide until the latest match reset. Blacktide owned us until the last 2-3 days when a whole lot of players appeared on ros. At some stages blacktide were 70000 points (or more) ahead of us. Most of time was spent trying to capture our home map then running around EB trying to recapture stuff there too including the keep and it was not uncommon for us to lose the keep three time in an hour. Rof & fsp also had it over us. Now people have moved back to ros or decided to join with the free transfers, our server might become competitive against some of the servers we struggled against in the past.
Plenty of English speaking people on ros.
How do you combat ros zergs though? tell everyone on our server to stop playing? People want to play which leaves little choice when the opposition do not have the numbers to be competitive. It’s not our fault and certainly not the fault of vabbi & wrs.
Also take into account ros are matched up against much higher populated servers too; so we know how it feels to be overwhelmed.
Is from ROS; it’s no fun being on a side controlling everything either and believe me it’s a rarity for our server. In recent times ROS has encountered similar issues as Vabbi & WRS are facing at the moment. Server match ups are out of anyone’s control plus this seems to be a problem for all tiers. ROS has also experienced an influx of players over the last three days (see other threads about this).
Last time we played Vabbi & FOW exactly the same thing happened, ROS had total control of all maps the majority of the week. As stated in other threads in these forums perhaps they need to start merging the small population servers or come up with a way to balance world v world matches out.
There are blobs & zergs on ROS. Free transfer? explains why player numbers have risen all of sudden.
Interesting reading. Started playing W v W on Piken Square and zergs/blobbing was as common as the server I am on now. The again it was about 7 months ago so guess things may have changed in that time.
Only time I have witnessed one in use was in a captured tower; an enemy thief was hiding in the tower randomly attacking players & guards and the only way the thief was found was through the use of a trap.
I’m from ROS and have a large degree of sympathy for both WSR & Vabbi. It’s no fun being the dominant side (not for me anyway). There is little challenge when games are one sided. ROS has experienced being on the receiving end too at times, especially so over the last two months as some guilds moved to other servers and numbers dropped dramatically or when matched against servers up to 10 places higher. Over the last 3 days more & more people arrived on ROS – some new plus some guilds returning which has made a difference.
I had been thinking about this issue tonight. An idea popped into my head, if a servers home map is overrun and under 100% control by another side then it should off limits until the home side recapture the entire map. Maybe their keep on EB should become off limits too.
Hopefully one day someone will come up with an idea to balance these rounds out.
Another thought after my original post; it maybe an unpopular one but…perhaps the three servers (Vabbi, WRS & FOW) need to be merged into one?
We battled & over ran WRS keep about an hour ago which kind of stunned me as the WSR players were defending really well until they decided to try & chase our zerg out the bottom gate which was a mistake because ROS could prevent them from re-entering the keep.

I play ranger class in World vs World and have always struggled in 1 v 1 fights; I would be lucky to win one out of ten, then again i’m not sure the ranger is designed for 1 vs 1 combat (just my thoughts). Interestingly enough my kill to death ratio is about 9-1 in the positive.
A high powered long bow can do a considerable amount of damage in group play (not talking legendary)

I’m not sure DEX have moved back as I saw some of their guild posting in another match up – maybe like other guilds they are split between servers….
Can’t keep up with which players/guilds left ROS let alone which ones may have returned. One player I have not seen in a while is Stikko – assuming Stikko moved to another server?
It’s been nice having extra numbers on ROS over the last three days as we have struggled the last couple of months.
One again though this match up is looking one sided again; hopefully Vabbi have inherited more players because I know you guys could not compete last time we clashed (we know how it feels at times). Always thought WSR were a strong side if my memory serves me right. Look forward to good battles!
Playing on a lower ranked server I can say the matches do not even out; one side is always far superior in numbers & score over the other two. We keep getting matched up against Blacktide or Far Shiverpeaks and generally find it difficult to compete; their a certain times of day we can hold our own and generally that is when the majority of the oppositions players are offline. Another factor are players/guilds not liking the uneven competition and server hop as we have lost more than one guild in recent times. Our server got matched up with another one around 10 places higher in rank a few months back and it was far from fun, their numbers were so vast they were able to place people in every tower & keep they took which meant the majority of time we tried to reclaim territory a huge zerg would come rushing in & wipe us out.
I don’t know if it’s possible to balance the game like you see in battlefield 3 as an example, where sides are automatically balanced if there are too many players on one side. I suppose it would be impossible considering we are talking whole guilds. Funny thing is though I have only ever seen two guilds actually running independently on our server in the 8 months i’ve been playing.
I want to state that i’m not against battling zergs or being part of one – unfortunately it’s about server popularity.
How things have changed on ROS; couple of months (approximately) back it was common for me to queue on Saturday & Sunday mornings for world vs world. Since them I have queued once. Why the departure of so many people? It’s becoming frustrating being constantly out numbered, having to recapture keeps every 20 minutes…yes, 3 times in an hour one night lol. Sure we can still put up some good battles at times against evenly matched servers……
Some of the servers we competed well against or dominated in the past now make a mockery of us. Does not help being matched against what appear to be much higher ranked servers either. It would be sad to see ROS die off as has happened with some of the other servers.
I’m starting to feel like a veteran now after reading players stating they just hit level 70 odd, so I guess we have quite a few new players in the W v W ranks. One thing I found astonishing is how many players came out of the wood work when we were fighting Scartlett’s minions – there were massive numbers. Highlights the disparity in numbers between ‘living world’ events & W v W.
Also have enjoyed the battles this week even though we have been completely outnumbered and overrun (ROS) at certain times of the day (one of the hassles of playing in the Oceania time zone) mind you its not unusual for ROS to have the out manned icon showing.
That is my two cents worth.
As far as server rankings go RoS are not that far ahead of Vabbi & FoW; I’m sure most of us on RoS would love to have good battles against both servers. Every time I log in this week it’s the same old story; no one around 100% map ownership with 690 points or there about with the exception of tonight as FoW were starting to make a push on their map. Reality is, it comes down to numbers….
How important is one on one in W v W v W? I know from reading here that some obviously enjoy it but perhaps a good percentage of us don’t or we are just not up to standard (I’m not great 1 vs 1, maybe a 30% success rate).
Personally I want to see both Vabbi & FoW do well as it makes the game a kitten sight more enjoyable when we have good battles and are ‘toing & froing’ over territory on all maps
I had the spam email tonight too stating my account is under investigation for account abuse with the account login support link which was a phishing link and luckily my firewall alerted me and redirected me away from the site as a consequence I have changed my details just in case.
you know what…. i gave the guy 15g to transfer it was sad to see 4 ppl from vabbi attacking garrison they even cant build a ram
he was a new player 1 lvl 80 character and stuck in a server with a few wvw players… i feel for that guy, so i paid his transfer and gave him a wvw guild
wvw shoul be like this….
That video is the exact reason I will never transfer. I don’t want to play LagWars 2, spamming AoE skills and buffs without ever even knowing who I hit because it’s just one big mass of red name tags. Like some other dude here said before: Don’t impose on other people your idea of the “perfect WvW”. For you fights like those in the video may be the most fun you can have. For me it would be a reason to quit playing this game.
By the way, feel free to send me 15g anytime you like. Not encouraging anyone to leave here but you’re very wrong. Skill lag used to occur when like 150+ people were fighting, happens a lot in high tier servers but not really in the tier we are in, we get nice and enjoyable fights. It may be less skilled individually but you need to be decent as a team if you’re 20 and want to wipe out 50+. It does require some form of skill and experience. It is definitely very fun to command in.
WvW isn’t about sneaky golem rushing a keep and hoping you’ll succeed, you should have guilds covering different borders and make it a community effort, scouts roaming the map, people defend the keeps, solo players reflipping camps etc.
Even in “ZergWars2” the way you described it, a solo player can get fun out of it.. Vabbi has had many people leaving to us and I’m sure they’ll all confirm WvW is a lot better than you think it is, because you haven’t experienced it.
Leaving your home server is never a solution though, this requires a fix.. not people forced to flee.
One of the rare occasions when I ran with my guild and not as a scout:
Hence why Millers Sound were so effective as they had people everywhere; in towers, camps you name it. Attack them and the zerg would arrive. Not so sure we have mastered this (RoS) or we simply lack the numbers to achieve.
RoS player here too and will be staying away until the next match up; I find no point in playing when one side is controlling up to 100% of the maps the majority of the time. When the match ups are uneven like this I would rather sit back and watch the enemy gain control of their territory before attempting any sort of fight back. We experienced the same against Millers Sound although still had enough numbers to claim back land around our keep most of the time, even if this meant running in a circle for almost the entire match up recapturing everything.
I’m not going to doubt the skill or determination of Vabbi or WoF but did read yesterday Vabbi were seriously lacking numbers as people jumped ship when the free server transfers came along
Outside of gaining experience points; some coin & rank/ability points what are the incentives for playing W v W v W? Sure you obtain rare weapons & armor at times, no more so than when playing P v E.
My server is currently dominant and we are not highly ranked, this has taken any fun out of the game as there is nothing to capture, no battles because the majority of the time as we have 90 – 100% control of the maps.
I agree with others this imbalance needs to be addressed somehow. Can this be done without evening out world populations? Do more world servers need to be merged for W v W v W, it would seem so.
Forgive my ignorance but I’ve had people dance on my corpse; sit on it, jump on it and fail to see what the big deal is. In my opinion and probably only my opinion; spending time getting upset over things like this you’re taking the game too seriously.
Or sit in the keep firing cannons, mortars or anything else effective at the zerg trying to kill the grub getting lots of loot bags in the process. Tunnel vision is right; how could you not know the enemy is trying to wipe you out while battling the champion grub or perhaps they just don’t care.
Most players are able to determine who is a good commander while negating the ones with no clue; in saying this groups can be just as effective without a commander present. The ones I avoid spend all their time telling people what not to do or abuse players
Ruins of Surmia are offering out to any player wishing to get their full map completion a weeks worth of vista’s and poi’s
Free tours of the borderlands are being given to any pve sightseer’s coveting that golden star. Dont worry though you will have a servers worth of board pvp’rs as escorts !
My personal rate is 1g per blwhisper me in game
And remember its 1 week only !! (I bloody hope so anyway !!)
Haha
little else to do on the maps. How long before the next match up? a week? ……….ugh
How about when two weak servers battle each other then the third (superior) server gate crashes almost every battle to gain control. The game is unfair when mismatched servers play against one another.
I understand the scenario the thread author is talking about and suggest more often than not it would be unintentional.
Yeah good luck against Miller’s; from my experiences recently they are very strong & well organized 24/7.
After playing w v w for approximately four months I have only experienced game play against one server with massive zergs; not only did they have massive zergs they also had enough players to have scouts in supply camps, towers…everywhere. More often than not when we tried to capture anything their zerg would be informed and our side ended up decimated (20 vs 50 or more, no chance). Fortunately this has only happened once although as posted earlier we are now the ‘massive zerg’ due to the lack of numbers on the enemy servers. I guess the more popular a land the more players they will have in world vs world (low pop, medium pop, high pop worlds)
The lag at times is impossible when large scale battles are happening but I doubt much can be done.
Playing in smaller groups is fun; large scale battles can also be fun at times; I also have found battling two players (or more) is normally a recipe for disaster especially against thief class. Heck I have seen a skilled engineer take out 7 people.
I play on the ros server and this is the first time i’ve played against vabbi & wof; I’m not sure what time the server reset happened (sometime during the early morning in my time zone). Get online this morning to discover ros dominated the entire internal battle grounds map and an hour later all four maps. Logged back in this afternoon and the whole scenario is about to repeat itself. This is no fun at all whether on the dominant side or the losing side; ros experienced the same treatment playing against millers sound. (also ironic how servers can lack numbers when not winning)
My thoughts are like other people’s; what is the point of having servers with minimal population where there are insufficient numbers of people to compete or they have no interest in competing?
Going to be a week to avoid world vs world. (two supply camps to capture = 100% control of all maps again).
I have finally managed to get back in and the game is still exceptionally laggy (Euro server). Was continually booted from world vs world this morning and eventually got disconnected trying to play P vs E. Suppose the goods news is lots of people are having the same problems. Maybe Arenanet need to reboot the server…
Curious to know if anyone else is experiencing issues with GW2 today; tried playing world vs world four hours before this post and the game keep freezing and losing connection; now trying to log into PvE at im stuck at the Queensdale loading screen and just lost connection again.
The defend Shaemoor garrison event is stuck at the eighth wave; the attacking wave are immobile sitting near one of the supply carts (near where Barthol collects the weapons) and are invulnerable.
