Been practicing in quick join. Pretty fun. Still hate rangers.
I’m trying it out. I like having at least a chance vs necros now.
If someone dies leaving me alone with more than 1 target I have to leave.
First match I was pwning people, and I even forgot to put the last 10 points in water for the entirety of the match. I still had armor of earth on instead of arcane shield. Block is pretty nice, and I never thought of it as the way you described.
Also, I don’t know what Earth gib combo is.
I’m ready to re-code my copy of the game so that it doesn’t show spvp icons anywhere to join.
What is an Elementalist supposed to do in solo queue (ranked).
We can’t hold points. We can’t get bunkers off points.
Spirit ranger: WTF. This is the cheesiest kitten ever.
Necro + anything else: Time to run away.
I’m full bunker, d/d, 0/0/10/30/30. Earth runes, restoration/energy sigils. PVT ammy/jewel. I spend most of the time dodge rolling in water to clear all the conditions.
WTF are we supposed to do in this game? It’s so hard to get wins. I’m the focus a lot because of my easy-kill class. I do not want to play some easier-to-die s/d spec, nor a slow-kitten staff spec that pretty much just does cc. I do not want to play support. Why is spvp such a hunk of dog dung compared to WvW for eles? I solo with the utmost ease in WvW. In spvp, I’m like the noob that picked the wrong class that was nerfed beyond all enjoyment.
UMAD BRO? Yes. This is stupid.
We are not allowed to run away.
Only the enemy is allowed to run away, (after we spent 30 mins trying to damage them as a bunker).
Ride the lightning is meant to zerg between rabbits like how Metallica had intended.

No MMO is good for esport. Not a GW2-specific issue.
I personally enjoy watching solo and team spvp, wvw, and gvg matches in this game, just as I enjoyed watching them in WoW when I played that. I sometimes still watch WoW pvp videos. Like with WoW arenas, tpvp are asides from the MMO itself that don’t interact, other than entering from the MMO world, so I don’t see what your point is here. The game as a whole is not an esport. The pvp in it is going that direction, because people are getting better and better. There are talented guilds that get high views whenever they play. People want to beat them. They want to be the best and have everyone know, so that they keep getting challenged. That’s fun. That entices players to this game. That’s what we all want.
Let’s all take the time to watch the old video about two little guilds: Team Legacy and Team Paradigm.
This is what sPvP should be.
~Ferrum Blacktide, former member of Team Legacy.
Just watched this. Thanks for link. Enjoyed it.
I wasn’t at PAX, and didn’t see the top-down view of matches, but I feel that the spectator mode we have in-game now is enjoyable, and maybe they should have used that in their presentation.
You can mouse over each skill if you’re not familiar with the class, and view gear. You can watch, immediately, which skills they use to counter plays made by other characters. You can pan the camera to view what you want as apposed to what the player is looking at. You can view a close-up of the node on it’s own.
If you want spvp as an esport, I don’t see the big deal. I would hope it would just be for teams and not solo queues, though, because that’s a total mess, barely a step up from quick-join. I mean, stop putting rank 1s in with 20s and 50s.
From a balance stand-point, that jumps from each major patch. Where you felt secure with your class at one moment, you’re not longer enjoying it vs what the other class(es) now have. I don’t think GW2 is ready for competitive showcasing in it’s current mold.
In a way, it doesn’t matter that much in the end. I ground out the gear, I can grind my way up to 300% MF, (which feels like playing Diablo 3 when they made that possible).
They stated everyone would start at a 20% base MF (or something along those lines). I’m guessing that our bonuses from achievement point unlocks will add on top of that amount?
Magic Find only applies to the items dropped from kills, and not what you get in bags/boxes from them. But where is our greater chance of a pre-cursor coming from? The only one I’ve ever gotten was 4 same items (level 80 exotics) in the mystic forge. I sold it to a guildy, and that same item has doubled in price since then. I am lucky in the sense that I finally got at least one. I have played 1000s of hours (not logged in to check).
Do I want legendaries for myself? Not really, because I play an ele 99% of the time, and the daggers are too expensive. The staff is also too expensive for forge gambling. The scepter looks weird, and I don’t remember if there’s a focus. I mostly throw my gold into the gem store, which is a horrible rate, to change the appearance of my character, or open chests (more gambling).
Dude, just drop ten thousand real dollars and buy a legendary like you’re supposed to.
I only hate how champion loot bags themselves are exotic, and contain trash 99% of the time. I do, however, love skill point scrolls in the bags.
I hate drips and drops of karma. I clicked 180+ drips today. ANNOYING.
I hate that we have to spam click to buy multiples from vendors, instead of right-click, and select quantity.
I hate that I can’t catch a thief with any build/gear in WvW, even using stealth traps to assist. They just zip across the screen.
I hate that an engie can out-pace my ele.
I hate not having weapon swap.
I hate blues and greens from annoyingly long fights with Jormag.
I hate all dungeon loot.
I hate that my class can’t join the conditions meta.
Will we get to put that 3% magic find on celestial items into a stat of our choosing?
I would totally put it into crit damage.
I salvaged my mf set when I finished my celestial set. It seems a shame to lose it altogether, but if we do, I want to decide on how, not just lose it and gain nothing.
I died once, too. I had arcane wave instead of armor of earth on in staff.
I run knights>earth runes, with celestial>power-toughness wvw infusions. Knights weapons. It’s very balanced on everything. When I get my last rank of guard offense, it’ll be perfect. I cannot kill other bunkers, unless they are bad.
- Used lightning whip as a method of spanking your friends.
I just use 1234 as my attunement swaps, and qwert + shift #s for right side junk.
- You’ve attempted to RTL/Updraft a thief off a ledge, only to have him vanish before your RTL hit.
- You, for some ungodly reason, updrafted the completely opposite direction you’re facing.
- You wait until your almost dead to hit vapor form to waste as much time as possible.
- You’ve been chased for an excess of 10 mins.
- You used staff on oil and cannons, then ran forever to switch back to daggers, only to get back in time to watch the tower cap, receiving no credit or loot.
- You’ve 1 shot a warrior with magnetic aura vs his own kill shot.
- You’ve used armor of earth and mist form trying to get uninterrupted stomps, only to get owned by someone else coming to their aid while you’re out of cds.
- You’ve RTL’d into a tiny object in front of you, and didn’t move.
- You’ve RTL’d while immobilized, and didn’t move.
- You RTL’d, armor of earthed, mistformed, and lightning flashed to get out of roots, and none of those worked.
- You got stuck in a WIDE VARIETY of objects because of lightning flash exclusively.
I’ll duel you.
That’s my story.
So I thought of ways to improve it already:
Perhaps buff the chance on arcana 25 trait to something closer to 10-25%. Make all of the conditions 5s minimum.
We could seriously use more chills/cripples to keep people in the 400 yard radius we need them to be in for maximum damage. Dagger main hand needs to have this.
Buff frozen burst chill radius to at least 400 because, I’d say, it misses 90% of the time. To guarantee it lands, you’d have to do RTL or BS into frozen burst, which is a dumb combination. I’d be willing to get rid of the damage factor if it landed easier.
Edit: If we could stack weakness, we’d be tanky again.

Anet doesn’t have a clue what they’re doing when it comes to this class.
D/D is the only thing I enjoy using in WvW because you get killed too easily with anything else. Over the months, numerous other classes complained about us breaking combat to reset fights, so now it’s next to impossible to do this. They complained about healing in mistform, so now we get blown up with by the recent condition patch.
It’s a total mess right now. I have no desire to play other classes, despite having gotten others to 80. I made this class, and try to be as good as I can with it. That usually means changing gear and runes constantly. I have no option to go more burst because that just dies, and does way less burst than other classes anyway. The most burst I can get away with is knights.
I do okay, though. It’s just annoying when I see how much burst other classes do, and necro condition spam is rampant now. I practice in spvp before making adjustments to my wvw spec, and it helps a lot.
TL;DR: Yes. We are the weakest because of the fact we need to stack 1600+ toughness and have vitality on at least accessories to be considered viable. I don’t know how to fix this class, really. Nerf hammers and necros. Also, mesmers get way too many goodies.
The wiki states: “This only appears to heal when killing enemies that provide experience.”
That’s players, too, right? And just not critters?
I wanted a heal one more, but extra dodges seem good, since those are 4 different things.
Dodging in air can make stomping easier. In water for the cleanse and aoe heal is common solo and in zerg.
I can’t beat energy in off-hand for either spvp or wvw. But is stamina worth adding? Or swapping out for? Can you dodge like a madman in a zerg? Can we be guardians?
My normal spec is 0/0/10/30/30. Evasive arcana.
I hope you liked my ballista offering in mag garrison, db.
Enjoy being online fighting nothing for 8 more hours.

Give people a 5 second “can’t swim” debuff after leaving the cap where they take damage upon entering the water and can’t submerge.
If you could put burning in place of confusion on perplexity runes, that might make for a fun ele build. Or bleed duration. An ele puts up 2 damaging dots, as already mentioned here, and 2 short non-damaging ones. I think the premise of this thread is that we need more, and they need to last longer. Our burns last 2-3s, while our blinds last 6-10s. Dagger’s burning speed is a 1s burn. :/ Earth’s 1, 2, and 5 skills in dagger off-hand have decent bleed durations, but all of them are easy to avoid. Just as it’s easy to avoid water 1’s vulnerability in dagger main-hand. However, if you look at staff skills, a lot of those condition durations have higher base lengths.
As an aside, I wish that Staff’s Gust ability worked like guardian’s staff 1, and sent out a wave of air to do the knockback, because it misses 90% of the time when the person isn’t running directly toward you.
This was in spvp forum. I don’t actually care about warrior regen.
I have full celestial, including staff, and 2 giver’s daggers for d/d, with perplexity runes, and the damage is abysmal. I have another dagger with geomancy on it. Still terrible. The fact that I can beat someone in a WvW is because people in WvW are bad.
Burning is an amazing condition, and you only really see the power of fire with scepter and meteor in zerkers. The condition itself it bad. There’s no point to use condition duration as an ele because it doesn’t scale worth anything such as crit/crit damage, and power do.
I love spamming auto-attack in air with scepter. It’s nice to have an ez-mode role like a thief gets to do.
I wish that water 2 in scepter automatically went on your target instead of having to cast mouse-target it onto things.
The regen is OP in WvW.
Now try it again as an elementalist.
Given the amount of downscaling we’ve had done to our class, I think that whatever made weapon swap seem over-powered at release, is no longer an issue. Especially if it’s just out-of-combat.
On average I carry: 3 daggers, and 3 staves (1 dagger, and 1 staff are spvp). I have even more weapons in the bank. When you are in WvW and have a spam of blue loot in your bags, searching through all the Zenith daggers for the right one to swap to is a chore. There have been 2 GvGs where I opened with static field and then ran out of time to swap to the correct daggers because the map was already laggy to begin with.
What seems OP about going from staff to daggers? Static fields? Water cleanse? We can get those already from Arcane Abatement that a lot of D/D users are already using.
Have you ever done solo spvp queue where you buff sprint with staff at the start, then can’t switch weapons because you waited 1s too long?
All I personally really want is a section in my hero’s panel to put the sets of weapons I wish to use all the time for the place I’m at. Or separate the weapons from the armor in the left panel. And the runes at the very bottom. I don’t need to see major runes that I got as loot jumbled with my exotic weapons. Those even show up in spvp hero panel, which makes no sense at all. So at least unclutter our UI.
For those of you interested in seeing the [Agg] v. [EP] GvG.
Enjoy.
No, thanks. The first video was bad enough.
It’s a chick .
Grats tc. You finally got your northeast camp back (3 hours later) with 2 guardians a necro, and 3 other people.
Solo adventures of Leafy:
Such as 2 superior sigils, or 1 superior and 1 major for 11% condi duration?
That sounds like a dumb trick…
Shocking aura, earthquake, updraft, tornado 2 skill all proc it. I’m in love with these runes.
I took the plunge. It does work on shocking aura, and it seems to proc almost every fight from regular hits.
I can’t read, obviously.
Confusion is one of those debuffs I’ve always wished I had.
I am intrigued!
Would “shocking aura” in dagger proc it, too? Or focus’s “comet”?
I have a celestial set that I’d like to try these runes out on. I just fitted them with boon duration/melandru yesterday. I’d hate to waste gold swapping them all for something that doesn’t really do anything.
I’ve been using the celestial in d/d and staff so far. It’s quite fun. It’s slightly less in vit and toughness, but higher in damage when you add extra condition damage to the mix that was never there in the past. Watered down zerkers, with a side order of clerics. It was this gear that I used alongside a 10/20/10/20/10 triple threat vs subject 7, and demolished him in under a minute (d/d).
I’m not sure why air does substantially more damage than everything else. The only time fire is better is with staff.
Even making a 100% condition build s/d or s/d, air 1 will still do more damage. The entire conditions option seems to have been heavily overlooked with this class as a whole.
Burn and chill are both extremely powerful conditions, and we’re not good at maintaining those at all. We have a major and minor trait in the fire line that add 5% damage to burning foes. How about turn one of those into “burns you apply last 10% longer”? Which even then isn’t much.
Well, I just tried a maximum condition build in spvp with 15% burning duration x3. There’s no survivability to accompany that setup. The damage was decent, but playing staff is the same as saying I can’t move out of anything hurting me. Let me just go re-spec again.
I don’t think I can play this game without a) energy sigil, and b) renewing stamina in spvp. It’s next to impossible. Our class is so heavily built around arcana which doesn’t give us any actual power, except for being able to swap sooner, and dodge more. Then swapping which skills are break stuns for us just don’t make any sense.
TL;DR
Spvp is absolutely horrible if you’re an ele.
I don’t get where the confusion is coming from? Confusion makes you do damage to yourself. Static field is a stun which emulates a daze.
I think it’s main focus would fall to support guardians.
How much can it actually heal for with 30 water and clerics/celest? (assuming it worked for Eles that is)
I can see how it would be good for group. You’re doing your thing, dpsing, cc’ing, then switch to water to group heal. Your team mates would get an instant heal from the swap, then aoe regen, then an aoe to blast up the rest of the way. But that might be overkill. 2 thieves blasting 1 healing rain can pretty much top everyone off. If you’re swapping often, or moving through groups (such as you would in a gvg) while swapping, then those passing heals along with the regen might be even better.
It’s difficult to keep people topped off in this game, and it would be nice if this sigil made it easier to do that.
The glory grind in quick-join feels like work.
Knocking guardians and engies off points to cap takes forever.
There are so many terrible thieves, that they aren’t our number 1 enemy anymore.
Our biggest threat for awhile now is necromancer. Good God. Was torment really necessary? Do I need a triple bunker cleanse, plus cantrip, plus heal ability to survive now? It sure feels like it. If you’re glass, just forget about it. You’ll be dead before you get that insta-gib off.
For the map with the laser I use tornado, because it seems like every other class in there has unlimited knockbacks on much shorter cds. If you don’t have one, you’re probably the one falling to your death.
After necro, I’d say mesmer is the most annoying thing because they can easily play glass, while doing more burst than the common thief. You’ll be fighting a close match on a point and a necro or mesmer show up, and you know it’s time to bail.
In quick-join, on a fair class vs class setup, I do not find it difficult to have most points for both teams. That is only because of the ranking system. Anet pits rank 3s vs 50s sometimes, and that’s hardly fun for anyone.
After some patches, I felt the ele class get progressively weaker due to the buffs of other classes, more than the nerfs of our own. But I can’t really say for sure. For instance, I have problems with some rangers. lol And longbow warriors, wow. Some of those guys really know their stuff. Ranger is a metric ton of interrupts and pet healing, with high burst, and get this, stealth. The warrior spams a huge AoE burn, then adds torment, and you really can’t stand in that aoe to burst him down.
Staff is the utmost slowest damage still, unlike longbow range skills, and every other ranged ability of the other classes. You really cannot play with that on your own unless you’re support, and then what’s the point? I do not play staff, I’m just making another side point on the class. I’ve tried it maybe 4 times in spvp.
Why did we all fall in love with Eles in pvp? Because of dagger/dagger. That remains to be the most used setup, because everything else is 1s away from being 1 shotted. We want to be bunkers that can kill, just like the other bunkers: Ranger, Guardian, Engineer, whatever else. You need to be able to hold a point vs more than 1 person at a time. I’ve seen an engie keep 5 people off a cap an entire match. For us to fight 2 people at once, you have to constantly cleanse, and dodge every lockout the enemy throws at you. Meaning, you can’t eat an 8s guardian chain-knockdown up against a wall where the camera becomes your worst enemy. You need to have that 90s(72s? with cd reduction) armor of earth, or mist form available. You can’t accidentally ride the lightning back into your opponent. You can’t get pulled right before a dodge cleanse. You can’t do any combo burst at all with confusion on. Basically to win, you need to be able to break a stun, cleanse, dodge, and negate damage from an aura at all times, or you’re dead, because you’re not going to kill the person without using any of those. Most likely you will use all of your cds to kill someone, then someone else shows up and you have to try to get a stomp and get out of there, or just run away somehow while they get rallied.
This is an average day in spvp: Stomp scrubs, then next match get rolled, making you question your build, runes, sigils, weapon set, and class.
If I had a nickel for every time I clicked “trait reset”…
Blowin’ people up, but at the expense of getting owned yourself shortly after. Entertaining, yeah. But wise?
I’ve been having fun with boon duration/celestial amulet&gem. Normal 0/0/10/30/30 spec. Just give yourself the proper amount of cleanses since conditions are the latest craze.
Hitting FGS 4, then 5, tends to make you run backwards unless you pause to make sure your mouse is top center of the screen. But that’s using it to go from A to B, and not against an enemy. FGS 1 spam on a group of people, especially downed, is probably the best thing we can do for our team because the damage is around 1500-2500 per target, and it’kittenting 5 people in a clump. I used to use it taking camps, but I tend to prefer water/earth elemental if I have no stacks of anything (might, Applied Fortitude, bloodlust). I use lightning flash to get behind the claimer’s hammer interrupts.
I use it as a combo field and a gap closer. I treat it as another lightning flash, but with the potential to apply burning. It will sometimes cause the enemy to run around it instead of through it, which lets me stay on top of them longer. This topic feels like nit-picking after maining on a warrior and hopping on an ele alt.
The thing that screws me over sometimes is not being able to lose target to RTL away. Kite around people, make them look bad, run away, rtl back into them, get owned.
Earthquake > Lightning Flash is probably the hardest thing to do. And gl trying to do it in WvW with massive skill lag. Or porting Ring of Fire at target location is also just as hard. Break out those high-end PCs.
Things I use it for: Churning, gap closer, mobility (not just escape, but porting out of red circles).
I don’t mind that it’s not a stun breaker. I don’t care that it does damage. I would love if it was a blast or leap finisher though. Maybe had special properties based on what attunement we’re in. Just throwing out some ideas. It’s fine overall, though.
