The average laptop won’t have the option of upgrading graphic cards. It’s designed to be portable at the expense of flexibility/upgrability. Only those specialized gaming laptops would have the ability, but they are larger more like mini desktops lol.

Even if you could upgrade they tend to be costly and probably better off buying a entirely new laptop. In your case you are better off getting a new laptop or desktop.

Look at that chart. It ranks about the same as the integrated intel HD4000 which is just a smudge above minimum requirements.

If you want to play with high settings, you will need a beefier GPU. I recommend a Radeon 7770 since its cheap ($70 after rebate) and the most bang for your dollar atm.

Look at this thread and see what GPU other people are using and their FPS.

GW2 auto detect and put you all on low setting because that is what your card is capable of for decent playable fps.

Try changing options in Nvidia Control panel – Manage 3d settings.

Is your dedicated GPU being used by the laptop? It might have trouble switching from 2d to 3d modes. Whats your power management set to? High Performance?

What is your complete spec for your laptop and desktop? Just saying i5 doesn’t cut it.
What settings are they both using.
What fps #‘s and where are you measuring for both?
Your claims doesn’t have much supporting #’s to backup anything.

Your desktop with a 550ti should perform much better than a HD3000. Something is seriously wrong with your desktop. What bus speed is the 550ti running at? See this thread, user claimed low fps in gw2 but works fine in diablo3 etc. Turns out it was the bus speed improperly configured.

do you have “AOE damage circle display” disabled in options? Enabling this has fixed crashing issues for some in certain areas.

Where/when are you actually noticing the dips in FPS to 30 from 80?

GW2 is very CPU-Bound atm. In places like WvWvW with large battles basically all currently available consumer level CPU will start to struggle. A Heavily overclocked 2nd/3rd gen core i5/i7 would still occasionally dip down to to 30fps. (Q4-9 for details)

Try running HwINFO or MSI Afterburner. Setup monitor graphs for FPS, CPU, GPU usage/clock. Line up the graphs and look at what happens when it records dips in FPS. Might give clues as to what is happening.

You can also try AMD Catalyst Overdrive features to set the clock speed etc.

Put your mouse cursor on the right side panel of the map window until you see a “hand” mouse cursor. Then drag and move it back down.

There is a setting in windows that dynamically lowers application volume down when it detects a microphone being used etc. It might have gotten lowered too much and stuck there.

Yea heavy WvW battle is where overclocking shines the most.

also, if you are comparing purely cpu to cpu, choosing the lowest graphic setting gives more accurate results as the gpu was holding back the cpu a bit in your tests.

Hope you have WPA2 wireless security setup and WPS disabled (easily crack-able)

GW2 does not even come close to using 120GB of bandwidth. Normal gameplay uses very little bandwidth (in the Megabytes per month). Only time GW2 will use GBs of bandwidth is installing it for the first time without the DVD. About 15GB.

You might have someone in your home downloading stuff (video/movies etc) or a neighbor leeching your connection if your wifi is open.

If you are the only one using the internet you can use http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/ to monitor your bandwidth usage.

If you have a multiple computers connected, they will all have to have it installed, or your router needs bandwidth monitoring tools. (I use DD-WRT)

You are not going to see any FPS increases using a GTX580 with VirtuMVP in GW2 since it doesn’t fully utilize the card in the first place. GW2 is more CPU-bound atm.

However, someone with a lower end GPU might see some performance boost with VirtuMVP

If you are using Windows 7, click the volume icon in the taskbar/tray and choose mixer. It has volume slider for each application open.

You were suppose to install speedfan to monitor your system temperature. That program doesn’t speed up your computer or increase FPS. Excessive heat will cause CPU/GPU to throttle down to prevent damage hence reducing FPS.

Do you have application specific settings for your mouse? I use a logitech mouse amd it can have profiles setup for individual apps/games.

Just curious did you have Windows set GW2 volume to zero?

You can install from the DVD directly, but it still requires internet connection to download additional files not on the disc.

You should check your ping time which measures latency to the gw2 server.

Start > All Programsa > Accessories > System Tools >Resource Monitor.

Network tab, TCP connections, search for gw2.exe

Try running prime95, OCCT & 3dmark all at once for a while see if you can replicate a system shutdown.

GW2 —> OS —> Drivers —> BIOS —> Hardware

GW2 doesn’t touch the hardware directly to force a abrupt system shutdown. It all goes through a middleman. No game modern would bother programming access to the hardware directly, but its not impossible. Usually, it’s a point of failure between the drivers and hardware. Often shutdowns are safety mechanism to prevent physical damage.

UAC gets triggered sometimes for me during updates. Nothing to be concerned with.

If you want to avoid UAC prompts disable UAC or change the folder permissions or move gw2 folder somewhere else.

What FPS are you getting? How much %usage? Where are you measuring. What settings? Since you didn’t provide those information we could only speculate you have a bottleneck at your CPU.

Don’t think core parking is an issue with GW2. It runs full throttle.

What are you comparing windows 7 to? WinXP?

WinXP bit faster than Win7 in terms of DX9 games, but it doesn’t support DX10/11.
In general, overall Win7 is a better OS, I recommend upgrading if you are still on XP.

Sounds like dying power supply or overheating issues.

Ideally, you want to see benchmarks for the specific game you are interested in with comparison among other cards, but that isn’t always readily available.

I would not advise going for a HD3000. It is the bare min requirement and horrible for gaming.

GMA 4500MHD is a 4th generation graphic by intel. That is two generation behind the minimum requirement of HD 3000 which is currently 6th gen. It won’t work/run.

You will need a better graphic card, preferably something much higher than minimum requirements, but since that is a laptop very likely there is no upgrade option.

If you are on a budget buy a desktop. For the same money you will likely get 2-3x more power than a laptop.

If the link you provided was accurate it doesn’t look like you have a dedicated graphic card for nvidia optimus to use, at least according to the spec sheet.

You could try amazon digital download purchases for games if you can’t get it to work here.

If you are using the built-in windows firewall you will have different rules setup for different network you connect to. So, your home network you probably have it not allowing GW2 to access the internet.

Go to window’s control panel > firewall and adjust your rules/settings.

You can do it that way it should work fine. I have multiple accounts on the same windows account and it works fine too.
