Reducing the amount of skills that area ground-targeted. Looking at you, Grenade Kit.
People’s problem is that they are building for stats instead of traits, rather than making up for it in other areas with rune and amulet sets. The lack of synergy is a definite deliberate choice, and the furthest thing from an oversight here.
Wish there is a way to teleport them back the moment they run away. Like that Necro skill. Besides, disorientation is one of Mesmer’s tools right?
Back to reality, PvP is fine since there is so little room to run. If they run away from a capture point I will be happy to take it back. In WvW… that’s another story.
A temporal curtain type skill, in which when they cross it, they get blinked back to your position, would be fantastic.
Back to the topic, if it’s sPvP, as funny as it sounds, I’d definitely lean more towards a power based build with access to boon removal. Most warriors are set up for massive condition removal, and I-Zerker and even I-Mage (I know right?) can put a surprisingly nice dent in their health pool.
(edited by kylwilson.9137)
Depends, what format is this in specifically? If it’s WvW, you won’t get a kill, or you’re unlikely to in any reasonable amount of time.
No offense intended, but why does anyone care? As far a gay rights go, I simply don’t care, but I might care a bit more if I didn’t have the culture shoved down my throat every thirty seconds in virtually every form of media I encounter.
Because the gay community hasn’t had straight culture shoved down their throats in virtually every form of media they encounter.
Why do these threads even exist when it’s clear that LGBT is an absolute non-issue in the scope of lore?
It is a non-issue to you. If you don’t want to hear what other humans think, then why are you on a forum feigning open-mindedness?
Feigning open mindne..
I’m a gay male. Please.
And as was previously stated, in terms of lore, nobody; specifically being any lawmaking entities, care.
It’s an issue because it is inconvenient. Pretty much every other MMO has a system in place that allows players to store cosmetic looks/armor stats on tabs and switch between them instantly.
I agree we’re jumping the gun here, as it hasn’t been implemented yet – but that fact that this wasn’t mentioned in the preview is troubling.
Pretty much every other MMO? What a massive hyperbole.

This is absolutely fantastic! This doesn’t even suit the look of my Mesmer and I’d be all over this!
TAKE MY MONEY.
Just wondering if I can get some clarification and/or advice, because here’s the position I and I’m guessing some other players are in:
I’ve recently acquired a Tormented Weapon skin.
I wish for this skin to be usable across as many game formats as possible.
Would it be wise for me to wait until the feature patch, to see how the cross PvP/PvE equipment system functions?
I only ask because I’ve read vague information here and there regarding this and just want to clear it up so I don’t waste this valuable skin (because it’s a hard decision).
Wall of text. Use paragraphs.
But from what I could squeeze from that:
“You are the minority, most players never visit the forums….ever….like seriously, never, ever.”
Me myself, being a part of a pretty big out-of-game minority can’t help but be irked by a statement like this, but apart from that, if you don’t take the -time- to, as a player, sit back recognise what is wrong and point out where it needs to be improved, you really have no say. You don’t.
People who post in the forums may be a minority, but forum crowds are also passionate about the game, and they complain because they want to see the game succeed.
You can play whatever you want and have fun with your ‘bro’. We don’t care what you do. You’ve made this pretty clear that we won’t need to care, by explicitly separating yourself from the rest of us. You’re clearly on some superior moral high-ground.
‘Forum-goers’ do care when someone, with little actual stake in the future of the franchise (one which has been a part of our lives for the better of the last decade) walks in and tells people to stop complaining because you’re are happy with spending 60 bucks and then getting whatever is given to you, even if you were promised something different at the time you paid for it.
So casually play the game, take what’s given to you, have your own ‘fun with your bro’ and leave us alone then. You’re happy either way, right?
But you must care more on some level, or else you’d be chatting with “Most players” who “don’t go to the forums…like ever…no seriously”; rather than posting here on something that by the sounds of it shouldn’t even bother you.

‘Thanks for still playing’ constipation prize.
All of the skill complaints that Nymph had just sound like latency issues or just…unexplained complaints (Ether Feast?), because I’ve had absolutely no issues with the skills you’ve mentioned, and there’s somehow no mention of illusionary leap???
You’re really not doing much to help the Mesmer’s plight here.
(edited by kylwilson.9137)
The amount of skills that needed to be unlocked was around what, 1300-ish? It was justified, it was progression, and account wide. Not to mention that many PvE mechanics translated over to PvP, as in PvE enemies used player skills. There was consistency. PvE and PvP tied into each other pretty well, you WANTED to PvE before you did any PvP because it -had- a learning purpose.
With the vastly inferior amount of skills in Guild Wars 2, it’s not progression, it’s gating. And back to mechanics; PvE is vastly different to PvP. Oh and skill unlocks are not account wide in this case. Which is dumbfounding. There literally is no justification.
So it goes against EVERY virtue that players were informed that Guild Wars 2 was supposed to based upon, and no new skills being account bound as unlocks.
I apologise if this post is a mess of thoughts and frustration, but the very idea its-self is a mess so it’s hella’ warranted.

Very cute. I had something similar in mind going with an appearance that doesn’t scream morbid and reanimator of the dead (my character is also a Necromancer.)Here are two pictures, one before the recent hair style additions which was taken in better lighting and another after in much crappier quality.
A fuller cheek look always looks so much better on characters with darker skin, particularly females. That’s definitely the hairstyle of choice too. Solid 7/10!
Well the new update gave me literally what I’ve been looking for since launch, I think I’m finally done.
I can’t get legally married in real life and that kittenes me off, but I’m totally more than okay with not being able to get married in Guild Wars 2.
Even if it’s an MMO I hope it stays as far away as possible from being a ‘life sim’.
It would be fantastic to have a cross EU/US ‘instance’ or however you’d like to label it, to talk about lore with other enthusiasts, with all of the in-game lore available in the one place, like as you say, a public library.
Just a note here.. in real life, the only symbols of butterflies I’ve seen were on the packaging of feminine products and feminine clothes. Never seen it used for boys or men.
ITT: We take imaginary video game world arcane aesthetics and compare them to real world marketing practice.
EDIT: And then in the next post you mentioned ‘unique gender roles and abilities’. I’m going to gracefully and masculinely step out of this one because this is a can of worms that really needn’t be opened in the first place.

Straight male insecurity is always such a riot to watch. Love it.
The communication would have to be similar to that of Grigori in Dragon’s Dogma, which worked so, so well. Also in which case, I would much rather any spoken communication come from the Deep Sea Dragon.
Something about a guttural voice coming from the depths of the ocean from a black whirlpool, at least it’s the image I have in my head.
Very Lovecraftian.
What hit me most, was when Scarlet said “Don’t you want to know why I did it?” roughly phrasing her here.
I’ve taken obvious note that the style in which the VA has delivered her lines has changed dramatically in direction (kudos to this, a fantastic change really), but the way it was delivered signified that she was in quite a state of shock, furstration and despair that nobody was really interested as to WHY she did everything she did, which on a subconscious level may have been her reaching out in a very subtle way for an understanding. She wanted people to be around for people to know the purpose of her actions, and she never got to see it through.
And what’s more…I’m not even sure that SHE fully understood why she was doing what she was doing, which would be simply unimaginably frustrating for her.
She was also what I’d consider to be ‘sick’. Mordremoth’s corruption is a sickness. A mental sickness.
In the long run no matter how heinous her actions were, it was this sickness that drove her. Whilst she did awaken from the dream with what could be considered a jarring amount of confidence, I don’t think her persona alone would have eventuated in her doing what she did. Mordremoth took advantage of her thirst for knowledge, that’s why people feel sympathetic to her.
It’s just really tragic and that’s how I sympathise with her. Regardless of this, she had to go. Dragon corruption isn’t able to be dealt with any other way (the ritual in Orr can not be realistically used within an argument in this case). It’s a real “What a shame this happened” feeling.
Ergo, it has nothing to do with redemption. That concept is flawed in this scenario. People who are diseased mentally or physically don’t need to seek redemption.
It was Ceara who was sick.
Loving Mesmers being unwanted and generally still a little misunderstood. You know why? Closest this has felt to playing a Guild Wars 1 Mesmer in a long long time.
Keep at it and you’ll still manage to steamroll most specs in tPvP

Very nice Cantha-esque look to her.
My young Noble Guardian, Lord Piotr:
A solid 9/10, face of someone who’s been bred into high society.
Reminds me of ‘Knights of the Round Table’, the 1953 film (in terms of the whole look). Love the era.

I was just under the impression that even with staff clones, the staff condition damage is pretty abysmal, and that critical damage and power scale much better with the staff, particularly in the case of Phantasmal Warlock which has marvellous power scaling.
I’ve not had much trouble chasing people down in the aid of both blink and magic bullet, personally. I use staff in the same setup as Sword/Pistol.
Phantasmal Duellist.
That’s nearly quite literally it.
If you are only interested in winning against average to bad thieves. Stationary phantasms are pretty much the worst thing to use against good to great thieves. They are just CnD fodder.
PU will rock thieves all day, but i personally hate PU cuz they can just run if they want, and i feel useless in group fights.
I personally run GS S/S and can beat a majority of theives. But vs the absolute best thieves its about 50/50 because of trying to get a phatasm off with all the blind spam is rough.
I of course come from the viewpoint of sPvP, seeing as WvW can scarcely be considered when complaining about/discussing balance, I just hope this is realised.
In which case my point still stands un-changed seeing as the game-type is Conquest, and stealth then contributes to nothing.
If you lose to a Theif and you have Illusionary Duellist on hand, it’s not that the Theif is average, you’re definitely an average Mesmer.
I must say, if the developers were to occasionally admit their mistakes, I wouldn’t be bothered by said mistakes, because admitting them is simply the most honest and mature thing to do, which earns respect.
Oh please as if anyone actually put in any actual effort to acquire Glory Boosters, with acquiring said boosters being the actual intent. And as A-net have said (and I’m defending them for once which is a shock), they’re reimbursing people who did purchase boosters using gems.
Sure I don’t agree with the changes they’re making on a basis of principle, it’s pretty lame and doesn’t set the best example, but alas they covered their kitten pretty well on this one so it’s best to move on, at least in my opinion.
I have a feeling people are complaining about not being compensated because they see the removal as boosters as an avenue to be reimbursed for nothing. Which I understand, seeing as everyone loves free stuff.
Why is Scepter/Torch the only valid weapon set to pair with a staff all of a sudden?
I would, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, actually aim to make Quip myself if it affected Phantasmal Duellist (easily my most used phantasm).
With any luck, mainhand pistol is somewhere down the track (so I can run a Pistol mainhand/Sword offhand combo). But yes yes yes to this.
I actually find staff absolutely invaluable and always choose it over Greatsword, if only for the simple fact that coupled with Sigil of Hydromancy and/or the Crippling Dissipation trait, it makes me slippery as anything, and doubles as another blink if I’m travelling from point to point if I do a quick backwards turn.
The procs of Aegis and Retaliation on both my phantasms and clones with Chaos is also fantastic, and with a high crit power rating, it can manage to do some pretty substantial damage, as well as guaranteeing interrupts on enemy resurrections, oh boy.
Really could go on about staff for days
The survivability tradeoff is far too great.
Phantasmal Duellist.
That’s nearly quite literally it.
The Lionguard have nothing to do with King Doriac. They where traditionally the protectors off the Krytan royal familly. while those are descendants of the Orrian king Doriac, the Orrian royal familly had their own organisation as protectors. (also the ascalonian royal familly is also a descendant of Doriac, so the would make the vanguard the same thing).
Secondly, there is no proof of a bloodstone under lion’s arch. It is even very unlikely.
We know the location off two bloodstones. One is under the southern shiverpeak mountains, the other in what is now called the maguuma waste. The one in the maguuma waste was used by the white mantle to sacrifice chosen ones on. Why would they bring the chosen ones all the way from kryta to maguuma, while they where in controll over lion’s arch and simply could have done it there??Doesn’t make sense at all!
But do you think the White Mantle, or the Maursaat for that matter, had any idea or any way to find out if there was a bloodstone under Lion’s Arch? The (magi)tech which was used to detect the leylines and decipher their function was not available until very recently (hypothesising that the leylines and bloodstones are connected).
The Seers certainly wouldn’t have told them where it was.
It makes perfect sense for there to potentially be a bloodstone underneath Lion’s Arch (maybe even the Keystone, we don’t know how bloodstones interact with magical leylines but alas this is why it’s speculation).

Simple solution…
1. Give mesmers their good burst back.
2. Un-do one of the nerfs to blurred frenzy (IDC which)
3. Give mesmers better AOE support (mantras can suck it.)Right now PU is the only decent mesmer build. Even hard core shatter lovers like osicat have given up on shatter because ANET has gutted mesmer burst inside and out. Now a shatter mesmer has to play a keyboard concerto to even make a remotely decent dent in a hammer warrior…
Basically all mesmers have going for them now is some variant of a PU build.
I think one of the main reasons why Shatter Mesmer has fallen off in tPvP is not because of the lack of burst but rather Thieves can do better defensively because of their better access to stealth while maintaining high burst/sustain damage similar to a shatter mesmer.
But before shatter mesmers could one shot thieves now its like “oh haha only half my health stealth!” Bam oneshot backstab HS hero combo.
I don’t know about one-shotting thieves I think you can still do that given that thieves don’t spam evasive skills (like SB #3) or shadowstep away.
Sword/Dagger’s entire baseline of damage involves evading mid-attack and will tear a Mesmer to shreds. It received a nerf some time ago, but despite that it’s still dreadfully effective at what it does, without even needing to have a glass cannon amulet (which to be honest is what I have wanted to see in a long time, so I’m glad). I still see these specs running around and I do my best to avoid them if I can help it.
No one-shotting happening here unfortunately.
So the point still stands, there is no excuse and it needs to be better prioritised.
And my point is, it needs to be better prioritized… or what?
You’ll get mad?Because that doesn’t really mean much.
What would mean allot more is if you stopped giving them money.
I never propositioned what would happen if they don’t prioritize their balance updates. I’d hope I wouldn’t need to, seeing as we’re in the structured PvP forum. Right? Surely we aren’t all missing the point here, right?
If A-net wants the term ‘eSports’ (lol) to mean more (or anything) to them, they will have to work a lot (that’s two words, not one) more proficiently.
“Also, if you are interested in winning some gems and other prizes the The Mistpedia Invitational is open for signups. They have 68,000 gems and a growing crowd-funded cash prize pool. The Invitational will run on both North American and European regions. North American group play begins Saturday, February 15 and European group play will begin on Sunday, February 16.” ~ John Corpening
THAT, with the game in the state it’s in?
Inspired by the Mesmers of old, namely;
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Gallery_of_female_mesmer_Tyrian_armor
How are people confused by this? They already stated multiple times the 18th of march is the feature patch with balance.
List of things patch on the 18th of march includes:
- Balance changes already listed previously on the forums (not the leaked ones) with more to come
- Sigil revamp
- Runes revamp
- Ferocity stat replacing critical damage (no change in pvp)
- Increased rank points across entire pvp (no # given yet)
- Glory being removed completely from the reward system
- Rank vendors removed
- No more tournament win chests since they will award rank points at the end of the game (with this bypassing the region bug when transferring between NA & EU)
- The fix for the pvp titles where tournament points would not count towards the achievement and make progress slower than it should be. (retroactive fix)What does it not include?
- The new reward system for pvp because that comes at a later stage
- The ability to copy your pvp look into pve/WvWThis is as far as my knowledge goes what that big feature patch entails. It’s not a new PvE storyline, it’s QoL update.
Boy are you gonna be disappointed come March.
My thoughts exactly. That being said I am looking forward the changes that are coming but yeah…
Also can someone get me a link where they said that we’d be rewarded retroactively in March in regards to tournament reward points? I actually would love to read more about it. I mean I dearly hope that it’s coming, but I’m not particularly optimistic is all.
This is a laughable excuse. This is what the gem store is here for and believe me when I tell you a LOT of people buy gems. Even I do regularly. They need to prioritize.
?
Welcome to the world of American business??Just because you spend money on a game doesn’t mean the powers the be think it’s worthwhile to reinvest that money into the game…
You’re just lining their pockets and confirming the notion that people will pay for hope… hope that the product they bought will eventually be worth their time and money…GW2 was probably considered a flop by the higher ups in alpha, the game was released half finished and has had EXTREMELY minimal support since then (I bet they only have part time coders for GW2, people they occasionally move over from other projects to tweak things in this game).
Why did you even bother quoting me? I said it wasn’t an excuse and this goes for the proposed ‘American’ business mentality (sorry to break it to you, it’s like that everywhere despite America being seemingly the centre of the world), so we agree there.
So the point still stands, there is no excuse and it needs to be better prioritised.
Sigh. You don’t get it. ANET needs to make a game that a majority of players want to play. PvP is not as successful as everyone hoped. Why?
Because it’s still in beta.
Faster and more frequent PvP updates to balance.
That requires more funding.
That’s never going to happen. If it takes them months to come up with the current patch notes… imagine how bad they would be if they kitten out patches ever month and a half… unless of course they get more funding or different staff and so can actually get more quality.
This is a laughable excuse. This is what the gem store is here for and believe me when I tell you a LOT of people buy gems. Even I do regularly. They need to prioritize.
I admit it.
I caved.
I totally bloody caved and made a power based PU setup.
You know what? I can now face-tank Warriors and Guardians (don’t take that literally, I still utilize active defences) thanks to the protection and regeneration and aegis from PU, and auto-attack to stab away their boons.
And do you know WHY I caved?
It’s because I was backed into this position.
Where I had to if I wanted to come out on top of a fight, whether it be staying alive long enough to pick away weakened targets in a group fight (primarily this with the AoE flying around) or to res a fallen ally, or 1 vs 1 which I loathe and find totally boring and I actually try to avoid if I can. It also helps me disengage with relative safety, seeing as Blink simply is not enough on it’s own with the multitude of gap-closers on heavies and thieves.
Oh I was so wrong to shun PU in the past. Sure I find ~condition~ PU setups boring and silly but I’ve found I’m using it differently from I would have thought I did. Those boons. Oh I love those boons.

“Overall balance is pretty good”. No it’s not. GW2 is the most unbalanced MMO I’ve played when it comes to PvP. There’s not even a hint of balance between classes.
…
" warrior sustain is a little high." – A little? They can tank just about everything, unless they get ganged up on (read 3+ people).
…
“These forums have always been excessively negative, so take them with a grain of salt.” – Forums are negative for a reason, and in this instance it’s the horribly, horribly broken class “balance”. There is no balance to speak of at the moment. PvP in GW2 sucks, and those who are looking to this game for that reason should steer clear. Unless you like running around in zergs in WvW.your post just proved brigg’s point on forums being excessively negative. gw2 worst game ever!!! pvp horribly horribly horribly horribly broken! warrior super OP and needs 3 people to kill OMG
He/she (I apologise) is still not far off from the truth, even if the language used is a bit of an exaggeration.
I’m really sorry to say this, but; burden of proof. It’s up to nay-sayers to prove that things ~aren’t~ as bad as a lot of players are saying they are, which is kind of a pain in the butt, since actual evidence points to otherwise.
There is a point (eventually) where general consensus will reflect the actual state of the game, and unfortunately we’ve reached that point. Do remember, the only reason why the complaining is so loud is because the issues that people complain about in PvP (in a broad sense, not bashing Warriors here):
~ Have not been rectified.
~ Take far too long to be rectified.
(edited by kylwilson.9137)
If I didn’t have university starting up again, I’d seriously struggle to deal with an even longer wait for a balance patch. This all happens too slowly.
If anything if Illusionary leap behaved like flanking strike in some sense whilst still having the root I’d be happy as a pig in kitten.
EDITED 2/25/14
- Added a slight analysis of StickerHappy and Sensotix’s 20/20/30/0/0 builds.
I strongly believe that Mesmer lockdown will be getting some buffs in the future. What I’d love to see is a change to Wastrel’s Punishment(Dom 25) into something like “Interrupted skills take 75% longer to cooldown” or “reveal enemy cast bars.” (the latter seems highly unlikely though)
what would be nice is if they changed Protected Mantras to something like “Mantras have a wider AoE range; Mantra of Pain/Distraction become AoE” or a trait for imbued Diversion to make it “Refresh Diversion on interrupt, (20s cooldown)”
The concept of Stability and it’s prevalence amongst the current meta’s heavy hitters shot Lockdown in the foot for me, personally. I’m still practising occasionally because I so desperately miss the days of Guild Wars 1 where I was rewarded for skilfully locking down and interrupting an enemy.
What I wouldn’t give for cast bars, and increased casting times for skills in general (across every proffession) to slow down the ridiculous pace of the game, and actually put some reward into it.
I used to be a top notch Mesmer in Guild Wars 1; and it saddens me that I’m unable to read a battlefield at the glance the way I used to be able to.
As it stands we work with what we have but other classes can do it better, this definitely needs to be a more emphasized aspect of the Mesmer.
P.S: Remember the sound effect that played when you interrupted someone’s skill, and the icon above their head disintegrating? I still fantasize about that. That was the sound of satisfaction and a job well done.
Out of curiosity.. which other classes can lockdown better than we can? Thieves have a nice interrupt and Wars have, well, hammer but I wouldn’t consider either of those superior to what Mesmer can offer.
Also, have you been running shattered concentration? I know it’s a bit obvious but I rarely have a problem with stability because of it. In fact, I feel like Mesmer are the best counter for stab-heavy classes specifically because of Shattered.
To put it really short, if I can roll a warrior and have someone professions (you know, minus other Warriors because Warrior dittos eh) stun-locked, and have 3200 armor, it all seems a little bit in vain. And as you mentioned, Thieves, who can daze out of stealth (which I’m fine with) more effectively, and reliably with a health steal on a 21 second cooldown (if any of our daze options stole health I’d scream for joy). They’re laughing all the way to the PvP vault.
Mind you I have always gone back to playing Lockdown because when it does work, it’s really a lot of fun and kind of gives me that old spark back, but the effort > reward simply doesn’t match up, and I think A-net need to work on this aspect of the Mesmer still. It needs a ~lot~ of work in this regard.
EDIT: I’d love to see a trait similar to Ranger’s “Moment of Clarity” if we had any decent single punishing hard hitting skills which like interrupts were such a signature trait to the original Mesmer concept. I wish I could let go, I really do.
(edited by kylwilson.9137)
Maena if you want serious answers to those PM me and I’ll be happy to give some input. I’m just not that into forum hyperbole/ranting etc.
I really think you should address each point for all of us right here. If there’s something you could teach us here that would help us then by all means, let us all hear it.
I like this idea OP!
This way I can be kittened from every x z y axis imaginable! Rolling a ranger, brb!

I stand with others here.
Play such a terrible, cluttering, distracting handicapped build and you kind of should expect this treatment. I mean you certainly don’t deserve it and nobody does, but expect it, and take it on the chin.
(And then continue to roll your face-across the keyboard).
Thanks for the heads up. Reading around, it looks like there’s a lot of hate towards Warriors. What’s going on, too much sustain or something?
I remember the big uproar when Ele’s were top dog, but never had too much trouble with them, is this similar or worse do you think?
Absolutely worse.
More sustain and outright immunity to direct damage and conditions at the press of a button. With 3200 armor. Upwards of 20k health. An un-telegraphed immobilize (being patched). Chain CC. Stability for days.

They can be dealt with but why bother when it’s so tiring and not worth the reward.
And this is not from a 1 vs 1 point of view, because it’s a team game and should be viewed that way, they are simply too effective at all levels of play. It’s become fast stale when counter-play isn’t really there in enough forms to keep the pace going.
(edited by kylwilson.9137)
Have the devs been pretty good about keeping balance in check?
Nope.
It’s pretty messy.
~ Petting Zoos clogging the fights with visuals and A.I.
~ Warriors with fight-long uptime of stability and condition immunity and condition clearing with no downtime
~ Decap Engineers.
People are either speccing towards either impenetrable bunkering, relying on their A.I. (MM Necromancers and Spirit Rangers) and pressing ‘1’, or running a Warrior (which is kind of bunkering regardless). It’s not enjoyable.
Things have fallen so off track it’s not funny.
