Achievements treadmill

And it wouldn’t be so problematic for me since I do realize thakittens a game requirement to get the achievement. However, my issue is that by adding this new diving goggle to the “Diving Master” achievement people who didn’t finish the achievement until the introduction of the new JP are simply punished, especially if they don’t like JPs – hence the achievement treadmill. Why not simply add this diving goggle achievement as part of the “Sky Pirates of Tyria” achievement section and leave the original 37/37 requirement be? I mean how can my “Diving Master” achievement be the same compared to the one before the new JP if the requirements differ?

As someone who had 37/37 achievement points before the new JP was released I must inform you that I lost 10 points when the new JP was released and I had 37/38 on the Dive Master Achievement.

You DO lose points if something new is added on an achievement line and you DO have to finish the new objectives to get your points back.

The problem with rewarding Achievement points

in Bazaar of the Four Winds

5 points in daily if you want to get the prize. Other than that, each activity only reward you with 1.

Balance ? Not really. Working as intended ? Yes.

Compare: legendary: 5, each activity in daily: 1

what if,
Compare: legendary: 5,000, each activity in daily: 1

now, would that make people happier?
So you want something that you can use real cash on, or depends on seer luck (lucky with drops) give 5000 points? Something that you won’t do again, nor it will keep you logging in the game.
While something that requires you logging and playing EVERY day rewards less points. Nice logic there.

Oh, them rewards.

What would the point be of killing normal mobs if you only got white items as drops?

White/blue items and materials. Then use higher ranked mobs to get rares and exotics. Do a dungeon run (any) and see how much more loot you get from normal mobs compared to silver ones, it’s silly. Silver mobs should be the ones players go for to get high-grade items like rares, not farming milions of normal mobs.

If they start releasing new zones/races/professions whatever with their Living Story they won’t need expansions, and I believe that’s why they made such comments. Why do you want a massive amount of new content, if you can get it all gradually? Of course the current Living Story hadn’t add anything expansion-worthy yet….

End of summer is the ETA for the reward “fix”

In other news I did Arah 2 days ago, got loads of rares (5) while fighting the normal mobs here and there and got 0 rares from either the chests or any of the silver ones. Yes the reward system is messed up, it’s way too rewarding for normal mobs and underwhelming for anything above them. They should reduce rewards from all normal mobs but increase the rewards from champions. I wouldn’t care if I only got some crafting mats and blues/whites from normal mobs

Survey: 2 weeks or 1 month?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: maddoctor.2738

2 weeks is fine.

I don’t think the events will stay active only for 2 weeks though, for example Dragon Bash is still active. How I understood it is that they will be releasing new events/activities/story every 2 weeks, not that you will have only 2 weeks to finish the achievements/dungeons whatever.

2 weeks to finish all that is short, not everyone plays the game 24/7. 2 weeks to get new things to do is excellent though and can’t see any problems with it. Why would anyone have a problem with frequent releases?

And what do you think is ArenaNet’s definition of failure?

I’m not working for ArenaNet so I can’t be sure what their definition of failure is but I can take an easy guess:
Empty or close to empty servers?
Very low income from gem store sales?
Not enough new players buying the game?

Just some examples. Since we don’t see major layoffs at ArenaNet it means financially they are doing well, therefore how can anyone say the game failed?

That’s more or less the same as removing rangers from the game and replacing them with warriors. ArenaNet should fix how the pets work, not remove one of the very few elements unique to rangers (with the other being spirits, which, well…).

Problem is, they can’t “fix” pets in dungeons without completely altering how they work and play. I tried the new AR dungeon with my Ranger and it’s impossible for the pet to survive at the boss fights (lasers and cannon parts). In encounters that require moving around, or risk instant death, an AI controlled ally is practically useless. The ability to stow the pet during those phases, and then calling it out to help again, would go a long way to help.

Giving the pet immunity to AoE (or a substantial reduction) could also work, but the devs need to be careful not to create exploits/abuses of this.

there is an achievement for consuming karma stuff?! I have been saving mine for my legendary, but if such achievement exists then im going for it!

There is an achievement to drink beer, you can get those by spending karma, or coin. The Achievement maximum is at 100000 points and the “best” Karma beer gives 4 points which means you have to buy 25000 (that’s 100 full stacks) of Beer – one by one, then DOUBLE click each one to get the points… that’s a total of 75000 clicks (25000 double clicks). Yeah good luck ruining your mouse with that :P

So what is this game about?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

maddoctor.2738

Like fighting shatterer. It shouldn’t be only about a slight chance of getting a precursor. That fight should be about putting me at my limits to kill that dragon! Spend an hour fighting it and only using all my skills and with the help of hundreds of other people I would be able to defeat it. And maybe I would be also required to obtain a certain item (not like better stats gear, but more like agony resistance) to be able to even fight the dragon. To get that item I would be required to travel all over the world and complete numerous events. That would give me a reason to play! No gear grind or farming here! (from my point of view) Just a goal to follow!

I will admit, there is absolutely nothing better (challenge-wise) than defeating an impossible encounter, a boss, a dungeon whatever, using your own brain/skills. Forming the proper strategy, changing how you proceed (and failing miserably countless times) is an experience I’d love to see in the game.

However, even the hardest dungeon/raid in the hardest game out there, becomes farmable after all the tactics are discussed and the proper build and team compositions are found. Not to mention that the harder a boss encounter is, the more nerfs it will get, so even more and more players can finish it (See Skypirates subforum for nerf request for the AR dungeon). It happens in the vast majority of dungeons/raids in any game out there.

Those goals would be temporary and after a while you will be expected to know all the steps by heart and make 0 mistakes. You might be put to your limits to defeat Shatterer the first couple times, but after that it would be a brainless activity.

The Living Story could be an exception to this, if done properly. Since Living Story content can come and go quickly it won’t be as easily put to “farm” status as permanent content can.

PS: I remember the days when I put on my forum signature texts like “Proud killer of <boss name> – World/Server First” when I was (among with my guild mates) among the very first in the world to defeat a powerful boss. Perhaps something like that could be called an “achievement”?

There is no WvW in GW. AB and JQ/FA are the next closest thing.

I know, but they are completely different. Also, AB and JQ/FA came out after GvG, not before.

Could’ve been = what it was like in GW. Something the PvP community revolved around, and interested lots of others, even if they didn’t participate in the ladder itself.
Lay off the snark, mate. We’re having a conversation and sharing opinions. The only people I’m criticizing here are ArenaNet, not you. Don’t like what I have to say? Disagree politely, or not at all.

And still you don’t answer how this “GvG” of yours would work in Guild Wars 2. Any actual ideas about it?

You kidding? AB and JQ/FA lived well right along with GvG. WvW would be fine. Having GvG would probably attract a lot of players who don’t play GW2 because the sPvP is lame. It’s a kitten shame they didn’t have it ready at launch. It’s too late, now, for GvG to ever be anything great like it could have been had it been there from the beginning.

Comparing AB and JQ/FA with WvW is… I don’t have the words. How exactly is GvG going to attract people who don’t like sPVP? Care to elaborate “how great GvG could’ve been?” You love just posting empty words without any meaning.

Changing the way the Reward system work

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: maddoctor.2738

maddoctor.2738

part 2:
Similar system could be used for the Jumping Puzzles. As it is now (and a Dev said as well) the main issue in increasing the rewards of JP chests is the probability of camping, leaving characters at the reward chests and log them every day to get loot. However this is easily fixed, while also making all of the viable:
Players doing all of them, everything in the Jumping Puzzle category, could get a reward from the Tyrian Cartographers Society, a BIG reward.

Suddenly, players will have extra long-term GOALs and the dungeons/JPs will be reviatilised, without actually changing their content. Maybe also make those once per month to prevent over-farming, although I doubt many players would farm either all the JPs or all Dungeons.

World Bosses/Events:
The Event system is core in the game, let’s promote it and make it more rewarding. Everytime players complete UNIQUE (once per day) events in a region (not zone), for example events in Kryta, Ascalon, Orr, not specific zones, they get a stackable buff (like Bloodlust/Luck etc) this buff will increase Gold/Karma/experience gain (maybe MF too?) but the most important bonus would be a MF boost on the final boss Chests, there is no other way to influence those, player MF doesn’t affect them, but giving extra rewards to those who move around the region doing events, compared to those who read the timers and just port there for the free rare, is important. The buff would disappear if you change Regions and you have to start again.

This would make zones with little activity, for example Lornar’s Pass, more important. To promote this, a Region chat could be implemented, allowing players all over an entire region to communicate and coordinate for events.

Changing the way the Reward system work

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: maddoctor.2738

maddoctor.2738

tl;dr: What I’d prefer is for the Devs to stop punishing repetition and instead reward doing a variety of activities. Just like your rewards are becoming less and less when you do the same thing over and over, they could become more and more, the more variable things you do.

The issue of “rewards” is a topic that comes up often on these forums, because the reward system is messed up. First, the obvious: All activities in the game are competiting against one another for the most valuable resource: player time, if one activity is not rewarding enough then it will become a dead zone, since players won’t run the activity.

Dungeons:
We all know that dungeon paths have varied degrees of difficulty, and of course take a variable time to complete. Yet, they offer the same token reward, someone might argue that it’s because they give different skins or are used in different legendaries, but I’m not too sure that’s good reason enough for such extreme differences in effort needed.

Open World:
Champions are useless, killing 10 effortless mobs in 1-2 min will net you greater reward than killing a hard champion in 5-6 min, there is a reason players complain when Anet adds champions in events, like in Penit-Shelter events. Hint: it’s not because those champs are significantly harder than having the loads of mobs, it’s because Champs mean less loot, which obviously doesn’t make any sense.

World Bosses:
Bosses have different time requirements, Temple of Grenth/Lyssa require significantly more than the Fire Elemental and the Shadow Behemoth, yet they both reward the same free rare. The devs tried to change this with the Karka Queen, making her reward 2 rares, that’s 100% more reward than the other bosses! See how it worked out, Southsun is a dead zone so 2 rares simply isn’t enough for the trouble of killing her.

The list goes on, there is clearly a problem with the reward system. In an attempt to “fix” this and force players to move around the world the game uses a punishment system.

If you farm for favorite spot for a while, you get hit by DR. If you do a dungeon path more than once, you start getting less tokens. World bosses reward you only once per day etc. This was supposed to make players spread around the world, but instead, when they hit the “barrier” they logout.

One way to solve the reward problem is to reward players based on effort. Activities that require more effort, or are more challenging, could have better/more rewards. I agree with this, and can’t see anyone disagreeing either, but here is a problem with this approach: how much higher should the rewards be for the “harder” activities? If the Karka Queen showed us something, is that 2 Rares for a significantly harder/time consuming boss aren’t enough, then how many are enough?

Now imagine two dungeon groups, group 1 does CoF P1 in 5 minutes and Arah P4 in 40 minutes, on the other hand, group 2 does CoF P1 in 6 minutes and Arah P4 in 2 hours. Which of the two groups should we take as our base for the reward system? More rewards for harder content is good, but how high should that “more” be?

Other than increasing the rewards, something else could be used to motivate players to do more. Increasing rewards, the more unique activities you perform. My “inspiration” is the Domain of Anguish in Guild Wars 1. How could it work:

Dungeons:
When you run one path you get rewarded 60 tokens, like you do now. If you run a second path (different) you get bonus tokens and as you do more runs, the amount of tokens is increasing. The maximum number of paths in the game is 4 (Arah), so 4 is a great number to have as the maximum. Mixing dungeons could be possible, example:

Run SE P1 (60 SE Tokens), Run CoF P1 (60+60=120 CoF Tokens), Run SE P3 (60+60+60=180 SE Tokens), Run Arah P4 (60+60+60+60=240 Tokens)

Numbers aren’t “final” in any way, just an example of how a reward system could work.

That way, players could run the “faster/easier” paths to charge up the harder ones for the tokens they need for a legendary or armor skins. Lots of paths would become viable, instead of running the same path over and over.

In addition, making Dungeon Master achievement repeatable is also another way of promoting Dungeon variety. Players who finish all dungeon paths of all dungeons could get a great reward for their trouble, I was thinking something like the November Ancient Karka chest (maybe something more) Of course Story Mode should be included.

The mini-pet Arena is in Rata Sum, not LA, the Asura Gate “leading” there is under construction and has been under construction since release. With some clever jumping (and a Rez Orb) you can reach the actual Arena.

When they start dealing with more mini-games, like for example finish Bar Brawl, which already has achievements but no activity, we might see the mini pet arena as well.

An Expansion's Worth of Content (no not that)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: maddoctor.2738

maddoctor.2738

To add to this, the “so called” expansions worth of temporary free content is a rip off to gamers who just purchased the game that will/may not ever see this content, wouldn’t/shouldn’t they be entitled to this content as well[b], or, do they intend on repeating this content down the road for them, if so that’s good for them, but, what about the old GW2 players, they will be forced to repeat it too(not very much fun here [b]IMO), double edged sword there. IMO, they(ANET) should be polishing the current content and working on new content(a full expansion) that I and I’m sure many others would rather have and be running out to buy.

No, why should they be entitled to all content? The world is moving, that’s the point of having a Living Story, while it certainly goes at a very slow pace and the changes aren’t as world shaping as they should be, there is some progress happening. Also, keep in mind that this Living World business is new to the devs, they are exploring new things about it, it might get better down the road.

I can’t take mister Vayne’s posts seriously. He/she is blindly protecting GW2, and only GW2. But the truce is that GW2 maybe not so good as he/she think so.

So because YOU say that GW2 isn’t as good as someone else is thinking (personal opinion btw) it must be true right? Why is YOUR opinion somehow more important than that of someone else? Hint: it’s not.

Why they created GW2, a mmorpg, when CORPG GW1 had a success? Why they didn’t create GW2 in GW1 style? Because GW1 had problems? No. Why then? Because mmorpg genre is more popular? Exactly! And why they decided to do that? Think about it.

So this is the typical “I wanted GW1 with better graphics” post, now I get it.

They can fool you, and you even doesn’t notice it and remain happy and don’t get, why so much people are complaining about GW2.

And many more people are not complaining about it, what your point? You just wanted GW1 with better graphics, they made something new and different and you complain about it. If you want to play GW1, play GW1, it’s still active.

Fixed exploits and bugs don’t make it on the patch notes, if you find something different in a dungeon it means there was an exploit that got fixed, there is no need to have them on the patch notes.

Skill/Trait/Tooltip changes not on the patch notes are totally unacceptable though, sometimes last minute changes sneak in, but new patch notes should be made (or a simple update) to reflect the changes.

Fractals level?

Achievement Points?

I find it pathetic when people try to make a point with things similar to this. Clearly the OP is trying to explain that there is no enriching variety of endgame play. Grinding for achievement points or a higher rank/level in the exact same thing over and over does NOT count as a good variety of endgame. That makes no sense. Some people are completionists, most are not. If you decide to post your two cents, think about forming a proper rebuttal next time, this is juvenile.

Then enlighten me what counts as good endgame variety without adding different gear tiers and a gear treadmill.

The irony in the criticism against RNG...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: maddoctor.2738

maddoctor.2738

For me, there is one major flaw in the loot system of Guild Wars 2 compared to the typical need/greed system: If I’m with my friends/guildies in other games we can share the loot “fairly” among us using a far better distribution method than pure random chance. While it is possible to do that in GW2 with various random drops, it’s not possible with others, like Fractal Skins or Ascended Rings.

Guild Wars 2 must be the only MMORPG I’ve ever played that punishes a group of friends/guildies playing together, both for giving little to no reason to do so and for the extreme limitations in loot/reward distribution. How many times have you played Fractals and gotten a skin you either have no use for, or already have 3 or 4 of that, but your RL friend in your party has 0 and want it, and then he gets a skin you want but he doesn’t.

I have a very different experience. I mostly play solo or with my wife, and the only guild I’m a member of is our own private guild, so that we can share the bank space. That is why I believe the game was created with players like me in mind, because in a system like Rift I end up in PUGs where no one knows me or cares whether I can use an item or not, they’ll usually roll Need on anything they can just because it’s valuable.

So the loot system is perfect for me, not so much for you.

I only want a “change” in the loot system on some very particular places, not everywhere. I despise the Need/Greed everywhere, I just want a better way to reward people for doing dungeon content, instanced-party based content. And besides, unless I’m missing something, my “suggestion” wouldn’t hurt a player that only runs in PUGs, it would just offer something for big groups of friends playing together

@tigirious:
Even if it’s true that some accounts are “cursed” or flagged or whatever, it’s impossible to prove it.

That doesn’t mean that I don’t experience something odd with their reward system as well. A player that has almost one fractal skin on every 48 fotm run, also has sclerite weapon ticket, holographic wings dropped after the first 10 mobs, around 5 jade tickets without even farming, just by running around… All the people I know that got a precursor drop sometime in their gw2 life, also have Jade Tickets (some more than 1) coincidence? Maybe.

On the other hand, I am at 1000+ coffers opened and still no jade ticket and of course I have the amazing amount of 5 fractal skins after countless fotm runs.

I know it’s just RNG… but it’s still odd that some people have luck in everything they do, while others have nothing. Sometime we will get the great skin drops and they will get nothing, then the “curse” will be lifted, until then…

I hope they reward only “fixed” achievements, not repeatable like Dailies and Monthlies, those already reward us with Laurels/coin/karma

4.) Zero personal progression and a severe lack of “Reward”.

Fractals level?
PVP Rank?
WvW Rank?
Achievement Points?

The irony in the criticism against RNG...

Actually it’s kinda ironic that you mention that Tol because that’s exactly what we’re seeing here when it comes to rewards.

Other companies stopped making everything strickly RNG years ago so essentially the grind system they have in place for anything in this game is something that started in 1999 really. (could be older) Even the boxes from the store thing, other game devs learned that putting more valuable items into these boxes and increasing the big items drop rates slightly improved their sales. Other game devs learned that activities in the game that give currency should be used for everything the player needs so they have a reward system for that currency.
.

Yeah, the loot system in Rift is much better… like, the first person to “tag” an enemy in PvE play gets the loot, if you hit it second too bad. Or when you’re in a group and it randomly assigns loot to this person or that. Or even when something valuable drops – that you may or may not actually be able to use – then everyone gets to make a random roll to see who gets it.

Yeah, much better system, no RNG involved at all.

Elementalists in WvW huge flaw.

While you are at it make Vapor Form not give 2 stacks of Downed Penalty please. It sucks getting killed by one of your own skills…

So, who's next?

The title says it all. Who’s next? Primordus, Jormag, Kralkatorrik, or one of the two unknown dragons?

Are you even sure Zhaitan is really dead? Nobody, can confirm Zhaitan is dead since there is no body to confirm it. And even if all the NPC in the game said so, there is always the option to bring Zhaitan back from the dead. It is the Zombie Dragon btw……

Maybe there is an evil faction that is trying to ressurect Zhaitan and we, as the big heroes, will go in their lair/dungeon to stop their plans. Reminds me of Slaver Exile in GW1

So what is this game about?

Well, GW1 was less about acquiring gear and more about acquiring skills.

Acquiring skills wasn’t hard or time consuming in GW1, you could have the best build in a matter of hours, even with a clean account.

GW1, much like GW2, was all about getting the cosmetic items you wanted the most, for the looks, and those often required a lot of money that only precursors in GW2 can come close to.

Oh and after Nightfall (and mostly Eotn) “leveling” the pve-only skills, they were an excellent addition for people to grind for.

Well, I leave you to your opinion then, but most people don’t agree with you in it being trash.

Nice try, saying “most” people.

Just ratings don’t mean much. Even so, take a close look at how many ratings those games have, Darkfall has 260 and Guild Wars 2 has 1008. I think it’s fairly obvious who is the winner (by a very long shot) and how much of a difference there is here. I wonder if Darkfall ever had 1000 ratings how high ranked it would’ve been.

Most people that have played the game and took the time to rank it have a favorable view of it.

And even more people that played Guild Wars 2 (and other games on the list) have a favorable view for those – a LOT more people.

You can find a review that gives a 9/10 on a video game on Gamerankings, that doesn’t mean it will be on the top list if it only has a limited amount of reviews, and there is a good reason for that.

Buffs and nerfs are how you fix bad balance design in games.

When something is underpowered the developers buff it to make it stronger, when it’s overpowered they nerf it to make it less powerful, of course there are serious exceptions to this rule.
