Btw I do not believe the argument “I can’t spend money on pixels” is a valid one when discussing the gem conversion. I personally do have the money, but I’m not spending it unless there’s a good counter offer. 1.5gp for 100gems wasn’t nearly enough.

I’m not selling my gems for less than 2gp/100gems. Gems have been undervalued for a long time. The system is working as intended.

Capping gem to gold would mean the gem supply will dry up one day, because people won’t buy or convert gems for low prices.

You guys are still going to be stuck with the regular Ori pickaxes, on your alts, unless you want to invest another 20-22 gold pr alt, since Molten pickaxes are Soulbound.

Money sink…

It cost me 0 gold. It did however cost me $10 real world money, and as I love this game $10 or even $30 for the set for development of the game is to me a bargain. Why does everyone here compare the in game gold as the cost of items is beyond me, if you want to support the game take a crowbar to your wallet or quit complaining at the “cost” of things.

Being account bound would be nice for the gem cost, but as I am not an alt-aholic I don’t much care.

Seriously? You are going to state this as some sort of argument?

You used RL money instead of gold. It’s the same thing! It’s all the same!! We may not have the real money to spend like you. So our in game currency is different somehow?

You reply makes my brain bleed

Your currency is based on the value we place on the gems we convert to gold. If you didn’t realize it, someone paid cash for the gems you bought with gold. The argument is entirely valid.

I wouldn’t convert gems to gold for less than 2gp/100gems. Just recently did converting cash to gold become worth the time it takes for me to “farm” money in the real world. Working 1 extra hour in the real world now nets me almost 100gp in Guild Wars 2. That’s acceptable.

The gem/gold market is dictated by the people who buy gems for cash.

Zerkers in fractals

Yesterday I was doing fractals with a 4 guildie group. Of course I make a screenshot on entering, because you know … 4 guildies is a risk factor. That risk is usually offset with good teamwork. Boy was I wrong.

We did fotm12, which by all standards is not difficult. I’m not the best gamer in the world, and not the best GW2 player either, but fotm12 should be pretty easy by now for everyone with a bit of experience.
Fractal 1: Urban. We wiped 2 times on the final boss. Should have been a warning
Fractal 2: Uncategorized. Wipe on all three bosses including the holding penn. Should have left
Fractal 3: Underground. First starts good, but after killing the dredge, they don’t realize the boss is next on the list. They just keep farming … Another 2 wipes on the Dredge Powersuit. These guys are n—bs, they just kept dying like flies.
I finally ask:

- does any of you know how to do this?
one of the guildies, a warrior, doesn’t simply say yes but posts his gear:
- RROD (infused), crystalline (infused), beta capacitor (infused).

For those who don’t know, all that is zerker gear. This guy didn’t have a single point of toughness or vitality which explains his dying. Not only that, but they had no clue about tactics, bosses.

So this guy was carried at least 20 times for his backpiece, including at least 2 runs on 20+ for his infused rings. In all those runs, he just played like he was in COF1.

I left the dungeon, not worth it anymore. I already wasted over 2 hours.

If MoP hadn’t been an april fools expansion, it may have worked. If GW2 wasn’t the best MMO on the market right now, it may have worked. However GW2 is the best game in the genre right now and MoP is a joke.

Strange it’s a very fun joke and there is more content in that expansion than in this whole game. Pandas are almost as funny as diminishing returns and RNG.

We have a different interpretation of content then. For being an expansion, MoP destroys more content than it adds.

Molten Alliance Pick - good or bad idea?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

Bad.
Gem Store was meant to offer items which do not advantage players who can pay.
Now welcome to the pay to win!

You mean a guy who buys a pick for $10 real money at the gem store (which you could get with in game gold anyway if you really wanted it), can now far stuff that you can farm also by buying a pick with silver.

A pick that will take a year or two to break even on for most people?

Over-react much?

It is the concept. If you pay you get something which advantage you as you have free slots in your bag (cause you don’t have to carry 2-3 picks at least in order to have a replacement when you destroy one) and you don’t have to pay silvers anymore to buy picks.
Today it’s a pick, tomorrow you don’t know. If it’s gonna sell well they are going to put more items like this and even better. It’s a signal.
Like the gear trademill… They stated there will never be a trademill and then they changed their mind and we are full of ascended items…
Gem Store was for cosmetic items only? Now it’s starting a slow change and I foresee what will happen in the next months: more RNG and more pay-to-win while people keep paying for it.

Slippery slope fallacy.

Your argument is invalid.

Furthermore it depends entirely on the assumption that this item has a tangible advantage, which it does not.

And how someone is not advantaged? You pay real money and you don’t have to spend silvers in game anymore. Or you’ll buy gems with golds and after 500 orichalcum picks you’ll have compensated the cost. You also have free slots in your inventory.
I will sit and wait to see the next set of better items you can pay to be advantaged.
Next Living Story Theme we’ll get the axe, then the sickle… Maybe next the free teleporter in order to avoid spending silvers at waypoints!

You use that number “500” as if it is a small number. Your entire argument hangs on whether or not a return on investment can be expected with these picks.

I do not expect to use the equivalent of 500 picks in the lifetime of this game. Most people are not going to mine that much. Therefor, there’s no advantage for the vast majority of people buying these picks.

I’m not using 500 picks too in the next year. But what I mean it’s that this could be a first signal.

Which is called the slippery slope fallacy and considered an invalid form of argumentation.

Now is it a very veeeeeery little advantage… and anyway it is selling so well and gems are overpriced as hell if you want to buy them with golds today. I think it means they’ll keep introducing items like this in gem store (or the problem will be if they’ll introduce items better than this).

Right now there’s absolutely no advantage. Maybe extremely long term a small advantage can be expected, but talking half a decade here …. your point is still invalid.

Unless you are not able to read english or to understand it’s so boring to argument with people like you. Your answers are pointless and invalid as you haven’t wrote a single reason to validate your statements.

You’re saying this item gives an ingame advantage (which it does not) and try to build a slippery slope around it, which is not a valid argument.

English ain’t the problem, but rather your ability to phrase a valid argument.

An honest question

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

marnick.4305

- All of this probably feels very familiar to many of you. Except soon after the bulk of our members started to get bored – primarily because there wasn’t anything left for them to “continue progressing” their character. Sure some leveled alts but most of us are hardcore players and like to dedicate to one charatcer. Others continued to focus on WvW but even that didn’t provide any rewards that made their characters better. A fewer number completed their legendaries and today there’s only a handful left playing GW2. Sure theres the notion of playig the game because its fun. And GW2 is that, it is fun. But many of us need to feel like we are accomplishing something. Call it vanity too, but we also want to feel and look special…and Gw’s lack of gear progression makes us sad.

The big issue with gear progression lies in that sentence. You can only feel special by making the vast majority of people feel bad when they see you. People don’t play games to feel bad.

While your 250 man guild may leave the game because they can’t reach indefinite power levels at the expense of the entire playerbase, the other million playing the game will stay because the gear progression is manageable by everyone, and has a clear end point.

Are there different tiers of gear?

If that’s your thing All that leads to one additional tier.
Guild missions sure have a raid-like feeling, they just happen in the open world instead.

I actually liked the game at first while playing Warrior during closed beta, maybe its because Mesmer’s early game leveling was so ridiculously weak that I fell asleep because of their lack of damage.

Mesmers are very slow to level until 60 I heard. If you want I’ll craft you a set of pistols and jewelry for your level so you have a bit more damage output. For free Send me a PM

Take all the money Warren Buffet owns and give it to a beggar. The beggar will be poor again in a few months while Warren Buffet will be rich.

Such a state of mind transcends to gaming economies. Rich people strike it rich in game just as much as they do in real life. That’s just what they are, not what they own.

That’s the problem. You’re asking us to trust that everything will work out. I don’t see how they can make significant improvements without a significant overhaul of many of the core mechanics. And you’ve already said in other threads you don’t see those kinds of changes occurring.

The core mechanics are fine. There’s some polishing to do, but the core game itself is brilliant. Once the varnish is on, you’ll love the game even more. Until then, you’re stuck looking at a work in progress. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

- don’t worry about mining copper while doing daily in Queensdale,
- don’t need spare picks,
- don’t need level appropriate picks,
- awesome animation,
- the text implies legendary functionality on orichalcum+1 ores, which I’d expect.

Comparing the still-young GW2 to the established game GW1 is silly. It took GW1 over 3 years to become the polished gem we all love, before that it was just a rough diamond.
Three months after release I didn’t play GW1 anymore … then played for a few weeks with months breaks in between. Not that I didn’t love the game, but it was a very short game pve-wise. Only with EotN did it become a big time sink with real end game.

To compare … I’m still playing GW2 every day I have the chance. And while GW2 is a rough diamond too, each patch adds in a bit of polish. I can live with that. Apparently some people never learned to be happy. These people simply shouldn’t play any MMO at launch and wait it out for a year.

Let’s hope for more info soon.

Guessing new dungeon

Hopefully not, especially not unless they add a decent in-game LFG tool too. Hopefully it’s more instances like the current one but with less reliance on holding an area until X waves are defeated.

I do not understand why a.net should waste time on something that already exists. GW2lfg.com works just fine. I’m not going to discuss that again, but honestly I’d much rather have them develop the game itself instead of copying a well-functioning community project.

WoodenPotatoes is arguing against himself in that most NPC do hand out a lot of lore, but you’re not bludgeoned with it. By following event chains you’ll understand how the world works, by talking to people you’ll find depth. That’s what he claims. How he comes to the idea of hollowness from that is beyond me.

As far as the current F&F goes, it should stay. The zones where it plays out are more alive than ever. As far as living story goes, for 2 zones in the world it really worked out. Now it’s time to develop the entire world like that.

How about the following suggestions:
- every single zone in the game should have a “dragon” event
- the event triggers sometime at random every twenty-four hours (with 3h cooldown)
- up the hp, mechanics and aoe damage on these bosses. Difficulty should be on the scale of current temple events

That would ripple these events through the world of Tyria. By doing that, finding 1 dragon would be more rare, although there’d always be something up.

What exactly is "End Game"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_endgame

In chess and chess-like games, the endgame (or end game or ending) is the stage of the game when there are few pieces left on the board.

Or basically, the point where one of the parties says GG and you start a new game (unless the endgame is not trivial). To play out a trivial endgame is considered bad mannered.

In MMOs however, it means exactly that. To keep repeating the same trivial content even though it has been beaten. And people wonder why MMO players are so bad mannered on average …

Chess =/= MMORPG

You’re one of those people who thinks the term Dungeon Finder means a tool that finds dungeons huh?

Game = game. If find it absurd how the meaning of endgame is completely different in MMOs compared to every other game. In Starcraft, you’re expected to say GG once a decisive position has been reached in the endgame. In Counter-Strike you say thanks once the game has been decided. In bridge, once the game has been decided, you throw the cards on the table and claim a win. In all other games, one doesn’t play out a decided endgame because it’s rude.

In MMO games, playing out a trivial endgame is expected and called “content”. I find that pretty weird, but maybe I’m just used to competitive and skilled games. However the term “endgame” has no place in MMOs.

No idea what dungeon finders have to do with this thread, but I’m of the opinion finding dungeons is best left to the playerbase so A.net can focus on more important things.

Okay buddy, I’m done talking to you if you’re going to be “End Game = Chess rule End Games or StarCraft End Game” You clearly cant contextualize.

End Game in MMORPG terms = Things you do once you hit 80.
I’ll fill in the blanks for you.

End of max level Game.

Well … at the end of the game you start a new one. Alting is the only proper form of endgame. What you want to argue about is midgame. So please stick to the proper terms. Endgame is right before the game ends. MMO endgame is a contradiction.

Dungeon Group Finder

Gw2LFG Experienced = Experienced in applicable dungeon

Now if you’re going to continue arguing over technicalities, because you’re unable to contextualize, please dont respond any further.

Good idea. Stay silent then if you can’t stand the proper definition of endgame.

For the record, I’m not saying I don’t like a bit of gear progression, but it shouldn’t be called “endgame”. As a moderately skilled chess and starcraft player, I find the term “endgame” for repeating trivial content inherently insulting.

Fastest way of attaining ascended gear

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

You can get all ascended gear in 1m 20 days per char.

1 ascended earring (12 commadations + 5g) = 6 weeks of bountys (2 comms per week)
1 ascended earring (40 laurels + 12g for 50 ecto) = 4 weeks (with monthly)
1 ascended amulet (30 laurels) = 3 weeks (with monthly)
2 ascended rings (20 pristine relics) = 3 weeks (assuming you are lvl 10+ fractal)
1 back (1850 relics or 1 vial + gold) = ? (depends on fractal lvl or which piece you make via forge)

That’s the 1m and 20 days plan, with full dedication, it’s enough time to get everything. Just do an even # fractal everyday, your guild mission every week, and your dailys & monthlys. It’s so easy, right?

The only grind involved is the 1850 fractal relics which I did once but ain’t gonna repeat for the heck of it, even though I like fractals a lot. After getting my gear there, I’ll just do them for fun.

Doing dailies or guild missions can hardly be considered “grind” in my opinion. Neither takes a whole lot of time.

In the end, it’s all about the idea of progression and not so much about the progression itself.

"GW 2 takes everything you love about GW 1"

I love the 10-slot skill bar, where every skill has a use as opposed to the 10000 slot bar in other games where I barely use 3 skills.

I love the overall charm and feel of Tyria, which is definitively taken from GW1.

I love the style, which, while different, is still one of the most realistic MMO styles.

I love how this game takes everything I love from GW1 and puts it in GW2.

Fact is, this game is exactly what GW1 would have been, were it an MMO. It never was, but GW2 is, and that meant some things had to change.

Can you imagine if, in “that other MMO,” Mages, Priests, Druids, and etc. all became obsolete? I can tell you about how long “that other company” would take to fix that
*. I don’t say that to rag on the folks at Anet, but to emphasize that *this is a game-breaking balance issue.
When I say game-breaking, I mean “if this continues then many experienced MMO-players will flee from this game.”

I can tell you too. Vanilla had dwarf priests over everything. In TBC it was shamans with leatherworking >> all. Each time it took an expansion to fix that. Are you suggesting <other company> did it fast? Because each time the meta was broken for almost a year.

No use trying to argue. Anet made it perfectly clear this game is not for ex-GW1 players.

Ingame I see more GWAMM, travelers, guild warriors and chosen than any other. Apparently a lot of dedicated GW1 players really like GW2.

Maybe measuring success and opinions should be done with the actual playerbase and not on forums

Maybe, or maybe most just got GW1 for the HoM skins. See, thats how speculation works.

And what better place to measure success than on a game’s official forums?
Oh and, erm, is having an opinion against the forum rules? if not…

1/ you won’t get 50/50 and gwamm unless you really liked GW1. It’s not something you could grind through. Takes almost a year of dedicated almost exclusive play.

2/ Forum people are a self-selected minority, and therefor not a representation of the community by default. You can have an opinion, as long as you realize the forums don’t really represent the real playerbase.

Why Represent another Guild Causes Rage?

I have a personal guild I use just for extra bank storage. My GL knows this but just about every time I represent my personal guild to shuffle bank items around I get a pm within 15 secs “rep plz” – It is annoying, but I like my guild so I’m not leaving. I just wish I’d get more than 15 secs before I get a pm. Not like I’m going to garner any rep pts by playing banker.

Hit N and appear as offline before playing with your personal guild. A friend of mine likes doing guild bounties with my guild, but his other guild requires 100% rep, so he just appears offline whenever he does anything with my guild and doesn’t rep them.

Our guild has 100% rep rule and noted to the recruit upfront. Also we are clearly aware of this “invisible” – non representing issue. Some of our officers usually track this information. If you are “offline” and your location changes, we know.

If you sign a contract (whether simply say “ok” or actually sign your name it doesn’t matter), you are expected to honor it. In real life, most are enforceable by laws so most people are hesitant to break. Here in GW2, it is not so guilds have all the right kick those that are not following the term of the contract.

If you are not ok with 100% rep rule, simply don’t join. Guilds don’t need leechers who are simply their for whatever benefit the guilds offer and toss them asides when they don’t need it. Find a guild that allow that and join them.

Slavery contracts aren’t valid in court. No contract can demand 100% of your time (except marriage). Employees are protected against being fired for refusing outlandish schedules. The contract you propose would make you pay very high fines in real life.

So unless you count a guild membership as valuable as marriage, you don’t have any leg to stand on.

I don’t know. This is my third marriage. I’m not sure that my guild membership wasn’t as valuable as at least one of those. lol

Just saying that in court of law, marriage is the only contract that can legally bind you into exclusivity.

I think it’s nice to see the game growing organically monthly rather than exploding every 4 months. In hindsight we’ll be able to appreciate just how much content we got in a year’s time.

Getting a beautiful and large update every single month becomes a habit eventually. I’m not hyped anymore but just happy for every big update. That cuts it for me.

Aion didn’t even get a single content update in the first half year. Content updates in WoW were always outside my gearscore so for me didn’t happen at all. No comparing possible.

Loyalty: It’s an extension of community, but it’s still very important. Why be in a guild if you don’t want to spend all your time with them? As a guild leader I’m loyal to my members, dedicated. I expect everyone to be the same at least somewhat. It makes for a stronger community. Why should I be the only one to dedicate all my time to work hard for the guild if my members just take advantage of the ‘perks’ yet not contribute accordingly?

That’s one of the most kitten arguments in existence.
- why have a friend if you don’t want to spend all your time with them. If any of my friends gets too clingy, they’re no longer my friend.
- why have a job if you don’t want to spend all your time there? Overly demanding jobs usually have a hard time retaining their employees. Part-time jobs exist for a reason.
- I can easily pull this into long-term relationships. The best partner is someone who gives you the space you need.

Don’t be a clingy guild leader. You members will respect you for it.

The difference between guilds and all your real life examples is that for most people the amount of time you can spend on GW2 and therefore with your guild is already limited. If you try to split that time even further by only spending part of it with each guild you run the risk of never really spending any time with any of them, or making them feel like you’re putting another group of friends first.

If you want a real world analogy it’s like being that guy who goes out with one group of friends and is always texting other people. If you keep doing it sooner or later your friends will decide there’s not really any point in you being there and you’d obviously rather spend time with this other group so they’ll stop inviting you out.

Most dedicated people play GW2 for a few hours a day, most casuals log in at least for their dailies. I don’t see why I can’t fit two guilds into that timeframe. Most friends I don’t see more than once a month. Guild members could just be a turing test to me, I don’t see why they get more props than I give real people.

Secondly, most people keep inviting me despite my texting, since a few texts brings in the gals. People who are in contact with multiple groups are very appreciated in real life. The best sales people are the ones in contact with competing companies. So please tell me why a guild could ask something, which my girlfriend wouldn’t even ask?

I would argue that someone you only see a handful of times a year isn’t really a friend.
As for the second part you’re simply not making sense at all there.

You know what makes friends right, they’re there when you need them. My friends are there when I need them and vice versa, for some that’s only once a year. But man, if they call me in need, I’ll travel the world for them.

So again, why can I have several friends, why can I have contacts with several competing companies, why can my girlfriend let me go out without her, and why can’t a group of anonymous strangers not give me that freedom?

As I see it you are part of a team trying to build up something. Let’s say sports team. What you want is also to be on an opposing sports team. Now while you personally get better you are in fact not building a better team. To me that’s being no better than a leech only wanting the good things without wanting to put in full effort.

Not the opposing team, but more like, I can train with a tennis team on Monday and cycling on Tuesday. Why can’t I play WvW with pvp guild X on Monday and dungeons with pve guild Y on Tuesday?

If I can’t play Guild Wars 2 at work, I won’t work in Guild Wars 2 either.
