Stop trying to balance around sPVP

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

Why do you guys continue to make the majority of your balance decisions around sPVP performance when hardly anyone plays it? By any measure, sPVP has been a failed experiment, why does the rest of the game have to suffer through class balance decisions that are clearly 100% targeted at sPVP?

I suppose you missed the fact that they are splitting skill changes from now on?

Tell that to the recent ele nerfs.

And the +100% buff to the most OP build (100b) in the game. It was the first time since aoe fleeing in GW1 that a.net made such a stupid line in the patch notes.

If i don’t want to play a certain dungeon, but want the skin i shouldn’t be forced to play it.

What kind of reasoning is this? Why doesn’t Anet just give you a lvl 80 and a full exotic gear and several legendaries for logging in?

You need to work (play) for your items and if you don’t want to invest the time to work for them then you don’t deserve it

At no point should the word “work” be used on the board of a videogame, or any game at all for that matter. It should be censored, just like kitten, kitten, kitten and kitten.

Study, practice, theorize, train … these are all valid words when it comes to games. Work isn’t one of them.

Ranger or Engineer

Rangers are considered the worst profession for dungeons, but I’ve done plenty of good runs with rangers so mileage can vary. Haters will be haters non-the-less. Everyone loves pet rez though.

Engineer is a mid-range profession and has the option to avoid minions by simply not taking turrets. Flamethrower is a very good dps weapon, and pistol #1 is extremely good for its aoe (which happens a lot in dungeons). Furthermore the elixir gun is one of the best support weapons in the game.

I don’t think we have too many currencies. I do think that some people farm currencies they won’t need, for the sake of farming. Having a million fractal relics is useless. Even if content was added for them, they’d stay useless.

Most excess currencies can be converted into gold, which can be used for almost everything that’s not currency-exclusive. This way, gold is the slow way to get everything, while all other currencies are the fast way to get specific stuff.

General Discussion About Testing

I work in automation too and the answer is pretty simple….

No lives depend on bugs in an MMO., while they’re far more critical in planes/cars … No seriously, no one ever died of an MMO bug. Crying, yes. Dying, no.

As long as people don’t die, delivering functional content has priority over making bugfree content.

Are you giving a free-pass to all devs – and practically all forms of entertainment – that you can release anything at a lesser quality…because no lives depend on it.
I understand where you’re coming from but thats a pretty naive statement.

I work in the media side of things, and that would not fly. Hence why we get do multiple revisions before stuff goes live.

I don’t give a free pass, but I do acknowledge that your media stuff is probably of far lesser quality than a nuclear power plant. On the other hand, a power plant is just ugly so it’s clear where the resources went.
I don’t want to come across as dissing your line of work, I’m merely stating the obvious fact that different applications require different types of polish. In your case, as long as the content looks and feels good, it doesn’t matter whether it’s made out of duct tape or stainless steel. There’s always a point where you can say “this is good enough”.

1. Defiant/unshakable. This stupid buff kills a lot of potential support play. It should be removed, plain and simple.

2. Trash dropping agro. Bad design, they should keep agro until killed, teleporting if people exploit out of their pathfinding. On the other hand, drops on trash should be improved for all dungeons.

3. Buff the effects of combo fields. Currently they’re nice when they happen but not noticeable outside of that. Make people go for them.

4. Balance OHKO to be barely more of a zerkwarrior’s HP pool, making durable builds more viable.

5. Simply count # of skills used during a boss encounter to get loot. If you’re supporting your party by killing trash/totems or other secondary mechanics, you miss out on the boss loot. Why is that?

6. OHKO cooldowns should be slightly longer than untraited dodge recharge. Perfect play will still be possible, yet one misplaced dodge will kill you.

Wayfarer/Diessa are alive: but only for now

in Living World

It’s called Living Story for a reason. Other parts of the game need some liveliness brought to them too. If all the content stayed sandwiching on top of each other then all the regions of the game would be “alive” and subsequently dead because the jam for this metaphorical sandwich would be spread too thin.

That might be true, but I felt this really developed those zones. It’s really cool what a few scavenger hunts can do to the underlying feeling of a zone. When this goes away, it’ll just be DE and hearts like usual.

Not everything should disappear imho, but a.net probably has plans. We’ll see in a week.

The gold on kills adds up over time. Many dungeon bosses drop 10 silver, with that one it’s 12. Many regular mobs drop 90c, which becomes 1s with the infusion. I took it myself and it’s very clear that drops alone are becoming a worthy income itself.

Karma and XP aren’t really worth it imho, but maybe some people have some specific idea (ex making the Anomaly)

As for the MF infusion, that’s most useful if you’re actually going full MF. One wants to min-max it.

The regular stat upgrades are so minor, you shouldn’t worry about them.

It’s not just GW2 that hates AMD, but pretty much all software in the world, starting with Windows itself. The problem isn’t so much in the software, but rather the buggy implementation of the x86 standard by AMD. Several hardware functions don’t work or are emulated which slows down performance considerably.

So either all the software is optimized for the lowest common denominator, which is a minority on the market, or for the proper implementation that is the majority at the same time. Easy choice imho.

Same goes for nvidia vs ati unfortunately. If you want proper results, spend the money. Don’t cut corners by using B-rated brands.

Is gw2 compatible with windows 8 OS?

in Players Helping Players

marnick.4305

I find 8 to be a smoother experience than 7.

Absolutely. Windows 8 was also developed for ARM CPUs which are far less powerful than intel CPUs. This forced Microsoft to make a lot of optimizations under the hood. Windows 8 can turn your old, slow, vista laptop into Greased Lightning. The old piece of skritt used by my gf boots in less than 20 seconds to desktop.

Furthermore, an optimized installation for Windows 8 takes less than 20GB of hard disk space, which is a huge improvement over Vista and Windows 7.

Laptop GPU question.

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

Comparing the Intel HD Graphics 4000 to dedicated graphic cards is like comparing an AMC Pacer to a Porsche 968. While they are both hatchbacks, their performance are quite different.

Performance isn’t everything. When talking about laptops, performance is the last consideration, while heat, durability and portability takes the front seats (excuse me the analogy).

To take your car comparison further … gaming on a laptop is like driving backwards on a freshly plowed field. Whether you’re using an AMC Pacer or a Porsche 968 for that isn’t going to make any difference, apart from the damage in your wallet. Actually, I’d prefer an old 2CV or Daf 66 for that, but that’s another discussion entirely.

Yes, the GTX 675MX is the best of the two you listed. marnick is right however, it will likely produce a lot of heat so ventilation is very important. You may also want to use the setting that caps the framerate as that should help with the heat generated.

I’d also strongly recommend only playing on lowest settings to preserve your laptop’s lifetime. Moving it often and playing on mid or high will destroy it in about a year’s time. Hence my car comparison.

If you want a durable laptop, go for business models. These are made with higher quality plastic/alu and better components overall. However you’ll be hard pressed to find a business model laptop with dedicated GPU.

In case of consumer model laptops with GPU, I can only suggest Apple laptops. But be prepared to fork over the cash for the superior design. They will last far longer than any windows based laptop.

Whether it’s farming for a month, saving for a year, playing the TP or working dozens of extra hours just for the gems, that’s your story. All of those can be legendary stories.

What no one cares about, is how you felt 3 months after. The rush eventually wears off, as with every other achievement in life, big or small. Don’t be that guy basking in 4 touchdowns in 1 game, 30 years later.

Each alt is more boring than the last

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

Since all you’ve done is dismiss perfectly valid points I’ll leave you with this. I’m not the only person who has stated they have busy servers. I’ve played at least ten other MMOs and usually, in fact almost always, it’s the end zones where all the people stack. Most zones are pretty dead in most MMOs. Guild Wars 2 is an improvement over them.

1. It’s not called “dismissing”. It’s called countering. You stated points, I gave you counterarguments. Learn proper vocabulary.

I reread your post, but all you did was dismissing. You didn’t present any counter-arguments. Let’s not get into semantics but a yes-no-yes-no discussion does not contain “arguments” in my vocabulary.
I understand why Vayne can’t answer on your dismissals. They don’t contain any arguments so there’s nothing to answer to except repeating what has been said before.

2. This hasn’t really changed at all. Instead of stacking at endzones they’re stacking at PVP and dungeons. All you’ve done is change the location. The only reason you see so many endgame people elsewhere (which “elsewhere” generally only implies lower level zones such as Queensdale) is because of the global events such as SB and Shatterer. Or maybe they’re making a bit of easy karma at the low level events there, but most of the time they’re just stacked in the area where each of those bosses spawn.

3. And honestly what the hell is wrong with having people mostly in zones for their level? I’m not saying that we should just make low level zones worth trash for higher level people, I’m just saying that the risk they take at higher level zones should actually be worth a bit more. ie, it needs to be worth it.

Let’s counter that with a real argument.

What is wrong with having people in the entire world instead of cornered in one part that matches a completely arbitrary number that doesn’t exist in real life. Even the best RL big game hunters still shoot simple rabbits and birds. Tackling a big challenge usually doesn’t make the small challenge easier irl.

As for gaming examples, in Zelda, getting the megaton hammer didn’t mean your regular sword was worthless. It was merely different. While the AK is the best weapon in Counter-Strike, a well placed pistol shot counters it just as well.

So why do MMOs use such a stupid system as levels to gate content? I do know where it comes from, but I don’t understand why it still exists.

I don’t need hundreds of people for that group, because the events are balanced for less. Normal events are balanced for up to 10 players, and group events for about 50. So you don’t need more players than that.

That assumes that everyone in a zone can do every event. That’s a mathematical impossibility because not everyone in a zone will be the same level, nor do they have the waypoint for where you’re at.

Which would be fixed if a.net just did away with levels altogether and invented something that was more meaningful than number crunching.

"unpopular" profession buff

in Suggestions

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

We all know certain professions are far more popular than others, while some get the boot big time. No need to reiterate which professions fall in which part of the spectrum. We all know them.

Why not make an buff for unpopular professions in certain parts of play, such as dungeons and WvW. A.net has graphs of active player breakdown, so they’re known.

Every profession under the 12.5% mark gets a buff. In dungeons that’d be +%% direct damage and +Mf, in WvW it’d be +%% damage and +X supply carried. It would be a bit like the bonus xp/drops from long-living mobs..

Such a buff will clearly shift the pve/wvw meta since min-max players will start chasing the unpopular professions. This system will self balance over time where the opportunity cost for the buff will offset difficulty in play (eg rangers/engis are more difficult to play effectively until they hit a certain buff %%)

If I’d lose my right arm, there’d be no Naga (although promised release in 2013). There’d be no scissors, no bottle openers, no screwdrivers. Losing my left arm would be even more disastrous. What use is a bottle opener if I can’t even hold it properly with my right hand… I would pretty much be out of luck.

We could learn that completely kitten economic models like communism could function in a world where money and work isn’t necessary for basic things like clothing, reproduction and shelter. GW1 is the perfect example, there’s no upkeep on playing which makes cosmetics the only goal. There’s no society more egalitarian than the GW1 community. There’s no reason to play except for play’s sake.

Other completely insane models IRL are anarchism and extreme libertarianism. There’s no government smaller than an MMO host. There’s very few rules strictly enforced by a.net. As long as you don’t infringe on the rights of others by botting or harassing, you won’t get banned. Apart from a few ground rules, society is entirely regulated by the society itself. IRL such systems collapse eventually.

In the real world this could work if food, shelter and reproduction were not an issue. Yes, reproduction is a core necessity in life to which most effort is directed once survival is guaranteed. These basic necessities undermine the viability of libertarianism and communism alike IRL because sooner or later someone is going to take control over them.

Extreme libertarianism lol, darn American founding fathers were completely insane I guess. You know libertarians are fiscal conservative, socially liberal right? You also understand that most political spectrums have libertarians as slight right of center? I suppose if you drove on the left shoulder of the left side the middle would seem pretty far away.

I’m as centrist/moderate as it can get. Most right-wing people consider me left-wing, and most left-wing people consider me right-wing. Funny Nice how you completely missed me saying how communism doesn’t work either, just to brand me as extreme leftwing. A commie would have made the exact same post as you, but called me extreme rightwing instead.

Yay, sexist jokes. They are so clever and funny.

Virtual economies and real world applications

Boon Hate Traits: A Step Too Far

The best thing about the boon hate trait is that they merged the existing grandmasters into a trait actually worth using to make room for it. >.>
The only real buff warriors got this patch was dogged march and a little bit of signet-y stuff.

The signet buff was completely unwarranted, at least for pve.

Why remove another dungeon?

Warning: long rant.

1/ I never played Tixx’s dungeon, simply because I don’t have time at X-mas. Family is more important than videogames. I’d have loved to play it somewhere in february though…

2/ I played the Mad King Dungeon once, because he’s awesome. I would have repeated him but … no time. It came close to All Saint’s day which is very important to me. Even as an atheist, I will honor my family on that day.

3/ I dabbled in the SAB. I would have loved to master it, but that takes time, time which I don’t really have in one month. I would have loved to master it in my own pace, while still enjoying the game proper. I don’t want to stop playing GW2 entirely for a month, just to get a few achievements. Why is SAB gone?

4/ And now the molten facility … I did it yesterday because I had a spare hour and read it was pretty easy even for pugs. I loved it. I want to do it again. Yet real life is going to interfere a lot in the coming two weeks. I’m happy I did it once, I’ll need a four-leaf-clover to do it twice.

Not just that … these dungeons were the best yet, and all of them are gone. Why? At the very least, put a few of these mechanics into the existing dungeons. The design of the temp dungeons are superb, while the regular ones are pretty bland in comparison (although awesome in comparison with WoW).

But why … why remove another dungeon from the game?

UI customization

Custom placing of UI modules, The Original Guild Wars does it, Guild Wars 2 is supposed to be the new and IMPROVED version, and now falls miserably short with the garbage Apr 30 update that renders having 3 screens completely useless! Congrats devs, you have managed to ruin the players running multiple screens experience and enjoyment in one quick patch.

I’ve got 3 screens, and no problems. Then again, I forced myself to buy an nvidia because propaganda eventually makes everyone believe it’s the way it’s meant to be played …
Sincerely, I’d like to continue using ATi cards, but when every game eventually has problems with nvidia optimization, it’s just not worth it anymore. Windows 8 not liking my ATi card was the final straw.

Boon Hate Traits: A Step Too Far

There’s a nasty Catch 22 going on here. If I spec into Alchemy to get some condition removal, I am automatically giving warriors with the boon hate trait a 12% dmg bonus against me when Hidden Flask Triggers. Also, some of my best survival traits like Protection Injection and Invigorating Speed grant an even further damage bonuses to these warriors. Pop an Elixir C to change a few conditions into boos, forget about it.

Anet has turned the Boon/Condition interplay into a nasty love triangle, with Boon Hate crashing the party. Boons are a liability anytime warriors and thieves are present.

I can tweak traits and utilities before a match after I have seen the enemy roster, but I can’t refund trait points to avoid things like Hidden Flask. I suggest that either boon hate be re-evaluated, or allow us to refund trait points before a match begins so that automatic boon creation traits can be avoided altogether, when necessary. I consider necessary when there are at least 1 warrior and 1 thief on the opposing team, or multiples of either.

It is no fun to be completely counter comped because of things out of our control.

I think the warrior’s new boon is a welcome new addition to the state of the metagame. Now Bunker builds have something they have to be wary of. Also take into account Warriors need to give up some powerful traits in order to reach this one.
It’s also another thing you need to take into consideration with making your build.

Add to that, the boon hate trait is useful only against people with boons if and only if protection isn’t one of them. Against all others, it is a wasted grandmaster trait.

Boon Hate Traits: A Step Too Far

However look at it from a different way:

1/ conditions become popular
2/ because of that, condition converting becomes popular
3/ because of that, boon hate becomes popular
4/ conditions are now worthless because of all the condi hate
5/ condition converting becomes worthless because less conditions and/or boon hate
6/ boon hate becomes unpopular

It is a form of counter-play. If you expect people to have slotted boon hate as their grandmaster traits, don’t bring boons and make their trump card useless.
