Ten worst MMO launches of all time. WoW is featured on that list as a prime example. GW2 never even came close to such issues. In GW2 I could actually play on launch day … that alone is an achievement in terms of polish.

For optimized speedruns in guild+teamspeak groups focussing on exploiting easy bosses … sure those are boss. In a pug group for more difficult content, I’d prefer a bit of support from engi, guardian and dps from more durable professions like necro.

Apples and oranges.

Where are the warriors?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

marnick.4305

In the last few weeks I started to pay attention to the profession make up in my fractal runs. I usually do fotm10 and fotm20. Almost all “unpopular” professions I’ve seen but hardly any warriors. Rangers, necros, teams with several engineers … I’ve seen them all be in groups and work just fine. I’ve also not seen any hate at all towards professions. This used to be different a few months ago.

It’s not even like these runs are slow … some of these have been extremely fast, often far more efficient to runs with zerk warriors, which leads me to think that maybe, zerkers aren’t the best of the best as is often claimed. A zerk warrior on the ground does 0 dps, compared to a ranger or necro who can survive a beating.

All MMOs are in beta stage for at least a year. Most remain in perpetual beta state. MMOs are among the largest software products. It’s virtually impossible to finish them before you have to earn money somehow.

Take WoW for example, it’s effective beta stage carried on for over two years after release. By the 9 month mark, like GW2 is right now, it was almost unplayable due to lag, bugs or queues. Critical bugs would happen on a daily basis putting you on the back of the queue again. Several levels and areas didn’t have a single quest, forcing you into arduous grind. Two professions launched without talent trees at all while other professions had mostly junk talents.
In comparison, GW2 is in a very good shape.

Guardian is the most straight forward profession mechanic but also the least versatile, while engi sure falls on the opposite side of the spectrum. To most people, simple means strong. To skilled people, it’s usually the opposite.

"More Than An Expansion's Worth of Content"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

So today, I saw this

Since the launch of Guild Wars 2, NCSOFT and ArenaNet have released more than an expansion’s worth of content, regularly hosted special events like Halloween, Lost Shores and Wintersday, introduced players to the retro-goodness of the Super Adventure Box, and engaged players with the Living World philosophy, all the while continually updating and tweaking the game experience. There are record numbers of people playing Guild Wars 2 and the recent WvW and PvP updates are just the first drops in a shower of new updates.

Emphasis mine.

Which brings to mind a certain eight year running MMO that just released an expansion around the time GW2 came out, which had several new zones, a new class, a new race, dungeons, raid content, etc, etc. It seems far meatier in simple terms of content and overall development effort than what what GW2 has released, and not only that, but substantively and permanently added to the game world itself.

\

And at the same time effectively destroyed all previously existing content. That other MMO which has been running for eight years, effectively only has 2 or 3 zones, and a handful of raid dungeons. In comparison, the entire GW2 world is valid and useful content, including 9 dungeons.

Find it baffling that people are so uncoordinated they cant do such an easy jumping puzzle. The only difficult part is learning when and where to jump from and to. Once you do one part wrong once or twice you should be able to get it right every time.

Theres usually mesmers around ready to portal people up, so if you really cant do it or if you’re feeling lazy just use them.

It’s not up to you to claim something as easy, especially not when others have trouble with it. Indeed, not everyone has the coordination and/or latency to complete the most difficult jumping puzzle in the game. In my opinion that’s insulting and therefor infractable. Not doing so but I hope you balance your words better next time.

The first set of geysers is most annoying. Practice for a while and you’ll eventually get it.

The second set is extremely annoying, but luckily you don’t need the platforms. You can jump up to a safe spot. At that point the geysers are over but a long non-timed jump section awaits.

I abused jump shot for that (engi rifle #5). I got that far, didn’t want to miss a single jump, so best thing is to do is not jump at all.

But honestly … ignore it. It’s not worth the grief you’re inflicting on yourself. Get another achievement for the chest.

I’m thinking of boosting this API while it’s young, and what’s better than a coding contest. The problem is in the prize pool. I want to gather a significant prize pool, preferably at least 1000$. Given the size of the GW2 playerbase, that’s a small amount. However I want to do this in a way that’s, for lack of a better word, unscammable. I’m fine with using my own paypal as the in between account, but most other people probably aren’t and I understand that.

And if you play while an awesome party is taking place you are missing the awesome party.
There will always be people that will miss stuff, unless they add every single thing permanently to the game, and that would defeat the whole purpose of a living world.

One of the main reasons I started playing GW2 was because I could go to a party and not get behind on the game. There’s plenty of ways to create a living world without constantly removing the newest content. Having a stream of new content on a monthly basis makes the world alive, removal of content is irrelevant.

People simply have to make decisions which is more important for them, I know some things are out of their control but that is a very small minority and should they really cater to a small minority rather than to the big mass?

If catering to a “small minority” can be done by doing nothing, I would suggest doing so isn’t a bad idea. Furthermore, I’m amused you’d call people with RL responsibilities a “small minority”. Personally, I’d consider those the big mass.

Currently the best way to play turrets solo is to tank for them. In PVE they merely provide a meat shield, which takes away from proper utilities.

So, because you can’t spend time on the game people that can should not get cool exclusive stuff?

Why should ArenaNet cater for people that does not play their game actively?

Define actively. I’m currently keeping up with the rate of content, but most people don’t play daily for years on end. Sometimes, real life happens. Sometimes real life and cool content happens at the same time … looking at Wintersday specifically. By missing too much cool content, people are less and less inclined to play actively.

A.net should indeed cater to returning players, give them a way to catch up. If that’s not possible, what’s the point in returning at all? And if returning isn’t possible, why have a sub-free model in the first place?

Take, for the sake of argument, someone who became father on the 1st of May. This guy was waiting for sentinel stats to be implemented. 18th of May he comes back to see these stats removed. Not only that, but he hears his stats, which are no longer available except for manipulated prices, were the rewards for the coolest dungeon yet. At that point, I’d stop playing at all if I was that young father. A game shouldn’t punish you for having a real life, a game shouldn’t punish you for being a contributing member of society.

Taking a break for 2 weeks doesn’t mean you don’t play “actively”. It merely means you’re a human being with responsibilities.
I play GW2 more than I train for triathlon and people already claim I’m crazy for doing triathlons. Yet you’d imply I’m casual in GW2. Go figure…

ANet's assitance needed - TP theme guild!

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

I have personally known three people in game, through a guild I was in at the time, who have been banned or ‘temporarily banned’ for, and I quote, “Market Manipulation”.

These players were all legit. They all earned their gold through luck/farming/TP legit, or, through large gem purchases (one of them blew a very significant amount on buying gems to sell is my understanding). Regardless, they came into significant amounts of gold allowing them to buy large quantities of items on the TP.

In the case of the ‘high roller’, he did it explicitly out of frustration with mat pricing. So, he bought enough gold, legitimately through the gem store, to buy every single one of a certain item on the TP and jack up the price five fold.

Again, all in game interaction through legitimate means, yet, banned for “Market Manipulation”.

So, please, explain to everyone here how you can advise this individual that it’s okay when, in fact, it appears not to be.

Thank you.

Never do things out of frustration. That only ends in disaster.

In this case, market manipulation wasn’t the proper term. I would have called is harassment of the entire playerbase. As you may or may not know, harassment, especially through frustration, is not allowed as per the EULA. Imho the ban was justified.

Furthermore, screenshots or it didn’t happen. I don’t judge by forum hearsay.

the reason i ask is because even though agony infusions say +5 they actually lower the damage from agony by 6%, so I was wondering if the same is true for these infusions as well. a response from an official a.net source would be awesome on this matter.

That’s because agony works differently by checking fractal level vs agony resist, which results in a percentage of damage per tick. Has nothing to do with regular stats nor percentages.

Large margins usually mean both buy and sell orders don’t really get filled. At the same time, as OP suggests, this gives an opportunity for flipping which 99% of players don’t participate in.

As such, to make the item sell, the gap has to be closed. By undercutting a good amount, a seller achieves two things. On one hand, the item actually sells, on the other hand, price gets corrected to non-flippable splits. That’s good for the entire playerbase.

Why is ascended gear unique? Any reason?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

They are unique to give a vertical progression system:

- versatile simple/laurel infusion don’t give max stats and are cheap
- offensive+defensive infusions give stats and expensive
- versatile infusions allow you to min-max but are prohibitively expensive due to passion flowers

That way, there’s a very small group of hardcore player that can claim perfect stats, while most have to make due with versatile simple infusions. On the other hand, these perfect stats are such small increments, that they’re actually not noticeable at all. It gives a sense of progression while not giving meaningful progression. It’s brilliant imho.

quick question: this new tool enables people to find worldboss events or other metaevent-chains quickly, it’s cool but have you thought of an ingame-system to do similar things?

Like a crier who runs around in our main racial cities and starts expeditions to the next big event via a small portal to the border of that zone. So that you see this 3min countdown as an event-marker in the city and follow him like you follow the npc commander in those wvw breakout events.

There are tons of big events in the game so main cities would be a good starting point to find frequent expeditions going on.

The reason why I’m saying this: the things outside of the game aren’t noticed by a lot of players. I know not a single person in my small 15-man guild who knows about those cool lore blogposts.

Living Story

in Living World

As long as I can keep up with the living story, all is fine and dandy. However, every part of the story I miss, makes me less likely to play. Currently I’ve missed Wintersday and SAB, both of which should come back one day, so it’s not a permanent loss. However had I missed some of the F&F achievements, I would be very much inclined to quit the game by now. Especially the dungeon, which only existed for 2 weeks.

I had to burn the southsun content. While fun, I couldn’t take the time I wanted for experiencing all of it properly. Even worse, I’ve got no time anymore to do old content. I’d like to finish my dungeon master and fractal achievements, but tough luck … can’t get in there if my limited time is forced squarely into limited content (which I’d also like to see).

Right now the living story is gearing up to a bi-weekly schedule. That’s just too much. I’ll start missing content, I’ll never catch up and that’ll be it for me. I can just see this happening one day. No one plays forever, and this living content will make taking a break more difficult than it should be.

Please, don’t let me quit this game. Keep the good content in. Don’t just remove what’s fun.

It’s only a money funnel if you let it. Don’t gamble money you can’t afford to lose.

Thinly veiled mount thread is thinly veiled.

There’s a reason shops don’t exist, even though I’d like them. We do have a functional world wide trading post, which is far more difficult to abuse than regular trading. I’d rather have honest prices through a relatively awkward tool, than being ripped off trough convenience.

Risk Vs. Reward in GW2 & The Underworld

I agree with pretty much 500% of that video. One concern that i had since launch was the potential lack of endgame content, or at least the incentive to even play. CoE is quite possibly my favorite dungeon ever, but takes some effort to even get a group going. And everyone already knows the problem w/ CoF p1. I honestly don’t see the problem w/ higher difficulty content offering higher rewards. Then i’d finally be able to find a grp for all the dungeons/paths i’ve never done. We’ll see where gw2 goes, i love it, but it is VERY lacking in endgame content, we got fractals, but that gets excruciatingly boring after about 30 levels.

Add me to friends for CoE. It’s one of the better dungeons. (EU server)

If you would go down there a bit more often, you’d see that they don’t really look like that.

Down to southsun of course. Bring protection (shields work best)

Is it really possible to answer without double entendres in this thread?

I absolutely agree. There’s nothing to show for story updates except Southsun. Something should stay.

Last stand errors

There’s two glaring errors in the last stand teaser page:

- Fervid Censer and Sclerite Karka shell are already in the game
- The page implies no earrings for WvW rewards (which will cause outrage)

Apart from that, it sure looks promising. WvW finally looks like it’s becoming an end-game worth playing for years.

I do have one.

I sincerely don’t like soccer.

As such, on soccer night in the pub, I’ll bring my Vuvuzela to make the evening remotely enjoyable for everyone who’s in the same boat as me.

To improve vuvuzela as an effective weapon, it should be a white and vendor sold.
