Title^

-I used to play a lot back when the game was first released (Obviously). I made a thief and only got it to 67, but shortly after that I stopped playing for a while. I wanted to make a new character, but I just can’t stick with it enough y’know? I do like playing, the game is fun; its just whenever I try to start something new, its…. “Ugh”. If that makes any sense…

Can mean two things:
- either you simply don’t like GW2
- or you don’t like thief

Try another race/profession combo and see if you like that more.

-I love my thief, but I want to try something new. I’m kind of stuck between Mesmer and Warrior. I don’t really know too much about these. How is their WvW potential? I don’t do much of that other PvP.

Mesmers and thiefs are kings in WvW. Warriors are god-king in PVE.

-What’s the least played class? Why?

Engineer is the least played profession.
Why …
Very steep learning curve and out-of-the-box skillset. Furthermore they have been severely hit by several “balance” updates that nerfed more than they fixed. In the hands of good players they’re probably as good as any other profession but at a much higher player-skill requirement.

Thanks guys!

No problemo.

Hello, I’m trying to buy gems at a certain price, but i can’t check everytime theirt price, i have to play too and the price is always on the move. Is there an api that makes a sound when the price falls under a certain value that you can set?

Their price is fixed at 10 euros per 800 gems, although you could try to find bargains online. Apart from a few deals bargains, the price hasn’t moved since launch.

Are you serious or what? Obviously I meant the gold gem exchange.

I was being sarcastic. Getting 20 euros is easier by far than farming the gold for 1600 gems. And I don’t think the conversion is going to drop any time soon, this market is dominated by the gold buyers, not the sellers.

Yeah I get that a lot about xp, I like it better than the later versions.

You’ve got 2 hyperthreaded cores, which can potentially deliver 4 threads. Furthermore you’ve got a videocard with 1gb ram and 4gb CPU ram while win XP only supports up to 3.7 total. That means half your ram is wasted. Even under x64 XP ram is not used properly.

Merely upgrading to Windows 8 x64 will give a huge performance boost without changing a single piece of hardware. And frankly, Windows 8 is a better OS than XP overall.

even PSU 550W cant run 660ti no matter what the manufacturing box says…
you will need to upgrade your PSU to 650 or even 700 w in order to run 660ti smoothly.

That’s how I see it too. By playing different parts of the world, I tend to have a relatively steady income. If I had a full day to schedule I’d do:
- AC123s
- COF12
- FOTM20
- HotW13
- few world bosses
- fill the rest with WvW
- a bounty

That easily adds up to 30+g without repeating content. Why people want to bleed their eyes out with farming is beyond me. Then again, I was raised on a farm, farming is best done with wheat, sheep, cows … In game I’d rather do other things. Not that I don’t like farming but feeding a pig is infinitely more fun than repeating boring content.

Unless you are running those dungeon paths multiple times each day or sriking out lucky with loot then it is unlikely to tally up to 30g+ (although I am not sure how much the bounty will be bringing in).

If you are running them multiple times each day, well that looks both dangerously akin to a form of farming and also boring beyond the eye bleeding level frankly.

Nope. Each just once.

Tokens to rares and salvage into ecto, same for world bosses. 20s completion reward per path and a handful of mats from chests. Add to that a ton of vendor trash drops. If you merely add the value of the mats, you get into the 30g range easily without repeating any content for the day (which means not getting diminishing returns)

Is 30g + a day doable? Sure, is it easy without actively trying to get it, lucking out (which isn’t statistically significant at all) or flipping items on the TP?

Absolutely.

Graphics card upgrade question

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

For your CPU upgrade, you will need to go into the BIOS on startup (F4 on mine, differs from model to model) and find out the model / make of the Motherboard.

Reason for this is depending on how old the Motherboard is, for example my board cannot take the newer CPU’s as there too big (my comps about 6 years old i think) and other parts like ram sticks also need (well ideally) to match up with everything, difficult to explain over text.

Ok, in that case I think I’ll save up and get a new computer rather than trying to upgrade bits and pieces at a time.

Not necessary. Your CPU should suffice for the time being.
- GTX650 or 660 for 100 euros
- upgrade ram to 8 gigabytes for 50 euros
- install windows 8 x64 for 50 euros

That’ll make your machine into greased lightning.

Don’t underestimate Windows 8, it is a very lean operating system and considerably faster than Windows 7. Proper multi-core support and x64 will allow you to access the raw power which your i5 CPU already has.

its a win-win situation for all, players get to exchange gems and gold, and anet get their money…..

I do not agree with your assumption that casuals don’t pay for gems. In my experience, casuals pay far more than so called hardcore people and I will continue to do so.

In your experience of who? You? Well thats one customer ANet are making happy then I guess. Unless you somehow have have access to the bank accounts of everyone in the game that plays less than one hour a day of course.

I used to be fairly “hardcore” and occasionally spend cash…now I am “casual” because the game is so bad and I refuse to spend anything.

Great, thanks for the meaningless observation.

You’re not casual. You’re a burnt out hardcore. That’s the only reason you believe this game is bad, because it’s made for casual people. You’re burnt out. Take a break, that’s not something to be ashamed for.

I don’t have access to bank accounts, but lets not dart around the facts. If people can only play for a maximum of 1 hour a day, I have a fair idea of what their bank account looks like. It is extremely evident why these people can’t play more than a single hour.

That bank account probably has more digits than the account of someone who plays 10 hours a day 7 days in 7 and probably is written in blank ink as opposed to red. Not for individual cases like you and me, but averaged on the casual vs hardcore population, that’s almost certainly true.

Well after getting my legendary, I stopped farming (and doing any dungeons regularly) completely, and just went to leveling alts or doing wvw. So far, I’ve gotten around 60-70g in cash, 80+ ectos and a few t6 mats. I think if you put the “farming” aspect out of it and simply try to play various parts of the game you find enjoyable, you’ll see “Farming” as less of an ordeal as it is.

We are the ones that will spend in your cash shop. I used to buy gems for one reason only: to reward Arenanet for a job well done. What does “End Game” really mean?
Of all the genres of games out there, the only one where this term gets bandied around with any regularity is in MMOs.

Almost. Endgame is used a lot in highly competitive games such as StarCraft and Chess. It’s the point where one of the players is usually expected to give up because finishing the game is trivial.

EG, in chess, endgame is reached once all pieces are captured except for a rook and pawn (for example). In almost all cases, such endgames are already decided by a winning series of moves that’s trivial to execute.

However, in MMOs it means the equivalent of giving the other player a rook again and carrying on the game ad nauseam.

1. You never addressed my response that what you believed to be my premise was not even my premise. 2. What you say about formal logic is only true if the premises are dependent on each other, which they are not, since each premise independently proves the conclusion. For example, let me demonstrate. Suppose the conclusion is, “the government should legalize X drug.” You could have two arguments: 1. “The government does not have the constitutional power to prohibit X drug.” and 2. “The government, even if it had the power to prohibit X drug, should not do so because it has harmful consequences.” Even if argument 1 were incorrect, argument 2 would still prove the conclusion. Hope that helps. And please don’t end with the ad hominem, it detracts from your argument.

Indeed, that’s what I meant. Other premises could be correct but the one you used was false. Since I don’t want DPS meters, I merely had to point out your premise was false to invalidate your argument. Furthermore, if the premise is wrong, I’m not going to read a wall of text.

Again not an ad hominem but using the wrong premise detracts from your argument. If you meant I used an ad hominem … point out please because I don’t think I did. I merely played the ball.

Buying gems with gold. (Please respond Anet)

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

All gems available for sale in the Currency Exchange were, at some point, bought by a player for real cash. Players who buy gems with cash either spend them directly in the gem store (which makes them disappear), or they sell them on the Currency Exchange for gold (and those gems now become available for other players to purchase with gold). While you’re not directly supporting ANet by buying gems with gold, you’re not “taking business away from them” either by doing so, since ANet profited at the moment the gems were originally bought with cash.

But what if at some time not enough are selling their gems for gold and someone wants to buy a crap ton of gems with gold and there is not enough.

If properly designed, the gems would rise to prohibitively expensive levels by that time, which actually encourages gem to gold exchanges.
Say, hypothetically, that the gem supply sharply drops. At that time, they may go as high as 100 gems for 1000 gold. There are certainly people who will buy gems, just to convert at that time (I would).

Eventually, the system will come to a point where the gem>gold and gold>gem conversion is equally attractive, and per day the amount of gems sold and bought is almost the same.
I’d even wager we’re currently at a relatively stable equilibrium, as the conversion rate hasn’t really moved over a 3 month period.

What message will it say if there are no gems available in the currency exchange or will it at that point generate gems from nowhere to accommodate people buying with gold? and I’m not sure if the currency exchange is between all servers or just yours.

What message would appear is purely hypothetical, and should never appear at all. If it did, I presume it would involve Quaggans.

Higher prices on TP =/= more Gem purchases

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: marnick.4305

I’d rather take the viewpoint that Arenanet wants gold acquisition methods to be so rare and prohibitive that people are encouraged to buy and sell gems.

And yet all gem to gold transactions are counter-balanced by identical gold to gem transactions. Someone farmed the gold. It’s an exchange, not a creation of gold. If farming is prohibitive, buying gems at the current rates would be prohibitive too. Please explain your chain of logic.

My logic is that a whole lot of gold sinks try to make gold relatively stable in value, to make sure that people who buy gold with gems don’t feel screwed over 2 weeks later when they tripled in price. A relatively stable exchange rate is definitively in A.net’s favour. In the last month, the gem price hasn’t risen at all.

I don’t jump on the “next big thing” bandwagon until it has clearly taken off. To me, 3 monitors currently suffice.

Well even sites like youtube promised support for it
Other than that you can use it as a regular screen with no support and feel like it’s an upgrade, because it’s cheaper than a real screen with such resolution.
For me it’s really good for health reasons. I get dizzy with lots of games due to eyes that get strained if FOV seems unnatural. Base Oculus FOV is 120. Indie game developers picked up Oculus developer kits, Crytek and Valve promissed full support for it, EA is developing Battlefield 4 with support for it, which means that I finaly will be able to once again play FPS without getting FOV changers and strain my eyes less due to a curved lens instead of a flat screen ^^

I just read the oculus rift website again, and it still looks like it could take a while. I really hope they can manage universal game support through implementation in Nvidia/ATi drivers. If not, they’ll have to do a lot of lobbying before it becomes viable, at any price.

That’s usually not a problem. The gear which drops should be enough to keep you floating until you get into level appropriate areas again and you can buy karma gear.

You can get until 80 without any gear at all. You’re not forced to do anything in this game.

Why there should be a dps meter

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

marnick.4305

I do not agree with this, because fundamentally GW2 is NOT focused on gear progression, which makes it unlike most MMOs.

With that, your entire argument falls apart.

First off, it’s just untrue that the entire premise of all my arguments are based on the idea that GW2 is focused on gear. It’s simply a strawman argument you’re knocking down here – my point is that people like to see themselves perform better, regardless of whether that’s because of gear or because they improved their skills or because they tried out a new trait setup.

It is the opening statement of your argument. If that opening statement is patently wrong, I’m not going to comment on the rest.

In formal logic you have a premise, and out of that you deduce a conclusion. Your conclusion could potentially be right but if your premise is wrong, it doesn’t mean anything in a rational way. That’s not a strawman, that’s merely using proper logic, which I would expect from you if you are arguing to implement something as controversial as dps meters.

I would go even further, and make a fine infusion that gives +6 but no other stats at a cost of 10 laurels. If that’s not implemented, I think a +5 laurel infusion is just fair.

Already works that way. Consider it done.

It’s called level scaling. No one is forcing you to leave an area before you’re 100% done with it. You can always come back to lower zones and the mobs will still kick your puppy.

Why there should be a dps meter

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

marnick.4305

My first argument is that gw2 is ultimately a game focused on self-progression, like most MMOs. Part of this progression is being able to identify your dps going up, either from getting better gear or becoming better at your rotation / choosing a more optimal trait setup and such.

I do not agree with this, because fundamentally GW2 is NOT focused on gear progression, which makes it unlike most MMOs.

With that, your entire argument falls apart.

Furthermore, I can’t see this being optional. It’s either DPS on or kick. When on it’s minimal this dps or kick. This minimum is always based on the most optimal cookie cutter, so fundamentally it’ll remove all builds, skills and traits from the game except the #1. What good is that?
Nothing good can come from this. I don’t want this game to have cookie cutter builds and rotations. It makes the game less fun.

Aqua breather in real life?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

marnick.4305

Not possible for several reasons:

1/ On average, the amount of oxygen in water is pretty low, certainly enough to sustain a warm-blooded being such as a human.

2/ The amount of oxygen required would create a lot of “waste” water, and while layman solution would be to dump it behind you, it still has to be processed. This means a water filter would need to process about 1000 liter per second to be effective. For a device as large as a mask, that’s physically impossible.

3/ Oxygen is highly toxic. In the air, only 21% is oxygen and the rest is filler gas (nitrogen). In scuba gear, only 10% is oxygen and in deep sea station less than 4% is oxygen while the rest is an inert gas such as Helium. That means, for an aqua filter to work, you also need to process 9 times as much filler gas in order to not die.

Such a thing simply can not exist, not because technology can’t handle it but rather because water doesn’t have what it takes to breathe in sufficient quantities.

Endgame is the point at which there’s only a few pieces left on the board, and to continue playing is usually trivial. Giving up is the expected course of action for the losing party. In MMO terms this means starting an alt once your character is fully geared.

Or to put MMO endgame into chess … every time you’re close to beating your opponent, he gets a new queen.

I like GW2. It’s possible to beat and alting is fun. This game has a real endgame.

Blast to the Past weeks (living story)

Have a blast to the past week once every 6 months, at which point all living story content is activated again simultaneously. Since the living story (thus far) exists in fully separated zones, there’s no story conflicts.

This allows people to catch up a bit once every so often. At the very least, some people want to experience the story content and it’s simply not fair to take that away from people with a real life.

I don’t see negatives.

Games are something you do after real life has been finished, not the other way around. If a “living” story is designed to kill real life, it’s not living … it’s WoW.
