Hmm, I hadn’t even thought of such tactics being used, I’m totally gonna try this tactic out the next time I’m playing PvP. I see it’d be a bad thing to be implemented for PvP then, as well as for WvW. ExTribble is right to say this would essentially be a nerf to conditions in PvP.

Perhaps it could be a PvE-only thing? It’s not like NPCs apply conditions in a tactical way.

Most bosses only have 1 condition as a gimmick mechanic. Those can usually be avoided by proper play.

I would start with the precursor, instead of building all gifts for Eternity bar the two most expensive parts … in my opinion, that’s not a good way to go. One doesn’t buy a wheel first and then ask how long one has to save up for the car itself.

I am personally not going for a legendary but I don’t see any problem with working on what you can first and letting luck strike whenever it strikes. Just a difference of perspective really.

I don’t count on luck. That’s bad practice.

I found the F&F arc pretty good actually. It was bite sized and had a few interesting new types of “quest”. The zones felt far more alive. Even without players around, there was more there than in any other zones currently.

The big problem I have with it, is the fact that it’s gone. It was fun, and I want to do it again with my brother who was gone for a few months.

So my brother has been away for over 3 months, to a place without decent internet. He’s back online in GW2, and I gave him the woodenpotatoes video … 9 months later. Wonderful video, very big recommendation.

He didn’t want to see it because of spoilers, at which point I had to explain what he missed. That wasn’t a fun thing to do … I felt bad for it, yet it had to be done.

I knew this moment was coming and honestly … it’s not good. While the living story has a few positives, it’s the biggest fans of the game who are hit most. No one plays continuously for years, not even fanboy #1. To have those people miss out on content is bad. To have new players miss out is bad. To have people with responsibilities miss out is bad.

This living story system is 70% bad and 30% good. While I love the good, the bad has to go at the cost of the good.

This would be extremely bad. Covering conditions is paramount to tactical play. What you suggest would more or less remove conditions from the PVP meta.

In GW1 the same existed, where you’d try to put a worthless condition over your valuable condition, while your opponent actually tries to remove the valuable condition before the cover condition can be applied. EG blind covered by poison for warrior shutdown, or covering backfire by a worthless hex for monk shutdown.

The funny thing here is redefinition.

If you redefine force as free will, cosmetics as pay2win, optional as required, then sure you have redefined:
Buying optional cosmetics out of free will with gold xor gems
into
Buying required pay2win items through force with money.

Doesn’t mean you have an argument. It just means your words have changed meaning. It’s still optional, it’s still not pay2win. Using those words doesn’t make it so.

i absolutely agree with the OP. it is already in the game and “there are much worse games” argument is childish. however, i don’t mind what OP said is in the game since it is “minor”. but he is also right about saying that existence of those items is harmful, since in my view, sets the stage for expanding on those mechanics.

Slippery slope fallacy. This is a false argument.

I think it’s very clear A.net is moving away from those mechanics, especially concerning the gem store.

I pray this does not happen. It was advertised as a limited time only purchase and thus why i purchased it. It it were to be sold again later I would be very unhappy.

From my own perspective, I don’t want to convert gems to gold because it personally feels like cheating, although I don’t have a problem with others doing so. At the very least I want to earn my legendary by playing the game itself.

The conversion is mostly decided by interesting stuff in the gem store, while interesting stuff on the TP just entices more farming.

T6 Dust Crisis

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

The more people that give up on farming mats equates to the supply of T6 mats shrinking and the prices increasing.
It’s easy to say: “Don’t farm the mats just farm the gold and buy them” but unlike buying gems and exchanging for gold, mats don’t appear from thin air. They are obtained by completing activities in the game that less and less people do because of the poor return for their time.
Someone has to farm them or supply will become negligent. Also more people simply farming for gold means that prices on popular items will rise due to the fact that a large majority can afford the higher prices and are willing to pay them.

I’ve got to correct you on that gold does not appear from thin air either, someone had to convert that gold into gems. It’s a two-way player-controlled system.

Apart from that you’re right.

The time limit is there to give you a feeling of constant gear progression (always working towards a new goal). They originally added Ascended items because people felt they were able to reach the gear cap (exotic) too quickly. So now you always have something to work towards. The game is still balanced around exotic gear (mobs didn’t get stronger when ascended was added), so this isn’t limiting your ability to do well in the game. It just gives you the feeling of always being able to do better. Don’t worry about getting all ascended gear as soon as possible, that’s not the point of it. It’s just there for people that want an extra challenge.

Fix the Guild Wars 2 (Un)Holy Trinity!

This is the big thing I miss from the holy trinity — defined roles. This isn’t required in GW2 and as a result I see far less team work than in other MMOs. The video was spot on with regards to DPS is king in this game.

The funny thing is bunker seems king in PvP — sorta opposite which may explain the reliance on the defiance buff.

Implies that games like basketball, cycling and doubles tennis don’t have teamwork, because the same rules apply to all players, because the players have loosely defined and mostly fluid roles.

Less roles and more interacting is necessary for proper teamwork. Putting people in shackled roles is only an illusion of teamwork. A real life example is the goalie in soccer, who arguably requires the least teamwork while having the most defined role.

Not accurate at all — there are very defined roles in those sports you mentioned. Following the same rule book doesn’t eliminate player roles.

However, implementing dedicated healers gives specific roles to people, making them play by other rules and effectively reduce teamwork by giving every role its own minigame.

What Players wanted: No more “GLF monk” from GW1
What Players received: No monks

Players didn’t want healing to go away, they only wanted the “monk monopoly” on healing to go away. I like the defined roles in the game, what I wanted was for every profession to be capable of playing a healer role (not just monks).

What people wanted was no more “GLF healer”.

Healer is arguably the least team-oriented role because they play an entirely different minigame. The minigame is boring since the mechanics didn’t improve over whack-a-mole in an eighties arcade. To add insult to injury, this role gets the blame for everything that goes wrong, while mostly having no real influence on the battle (since whack-a-mole is so easy).

People wanted other players to clean up their own garbage, because healers are a shoddy excuse for teamplay.

Help with Infusions & Agony Resistance

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

I’m looking to get full berzerker gear for my Mesmer, but before I get anything I’m trying to understand what’s the deal with infusions and agony resistance.

Basically, I recently read that you can upgrade an ascended item in the mystic forge to have +5 agony resistance ‘built-in’ – and on top of this you’re still able to add another +5 agony resistance via the infusion slot.

So my questions are:

1). What’s needed to upgrade ascended items to get the +5 built-in agony resistance?

Ascended crafting materials

2). For the offensive/defensive/utility infusion slot, if you plan to run fractals would you just put +5 agony resistance there – or is there an upgraded infusion which offers both the +5 agony resistance and some other stat? (e.g. Power?)

Whatever suits your build.

3). To run high-level fractals, what’s the minimum AR one should have?

Minimum necessary is 0 as long as you know how to dodge (or so I’m told). Otherwise scale minus 5 is strongly recommended.

4). Is 60 AR (+10 per ascended item) the highest AR currently possible?

No.

Many thanks guys…

I’m of those who thinks Gem price in po is getting too high too quick.

Especially as I try to mix sPvP with PvE. I’m now 35 in sPvP but you have no way to earn money in sPvP, to the opposite of McM.
Had I spent all that time in PvE I would have had more gp and would be more confortable to buy gems.
At a time there were the possibility to win gems in tournament, but this was not worth the time spent.
As it is now I have greatly reduced my sPvP timing (to the daily task, ie 3 games daily) to play more in pve and earn gold.

I have the feeling that if I stop the game only one week (hence for a longer period), the gem price will climb so much that it will not be worth playing again.

Imarion

That’s only true if you’re one of those people who thinks free content is really free. Buy a gemcard. They’re not expensive and there’s nothing morally wrong with doing so for gem stuff. Personally I don’t convert gems to gold either.

All stats Ascended

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: marnick.4305

marnick.4305

This is where Celestial come in.

Pros: has 20% more stats
Cons: stats spread across the entire spectrum.

So when your Min/Maxing you have to ask does the Pro outweigh the Con. Now your probably going to need the Vit/Toughness in a support build and taking it in the Celestial Jewelery means you don’t have to take it elsewhere. Your also going to be able to take enough extra survivability, to get to the desired amount, in the rest of your equipment and traits that the Power/Prec/Crit is probably not going to be wasted either. So that leaves 2 out of the 7 stats (roughly 28% of the stats) unaccounted for the Condition and the Healing. So whether Celestial works in a min/maxed build really comes down to this, is the loss of that 8% stats from Surviability and Combat Damage to gain the 28% bonus to Condition/Healing worth it?

I’d like to think that certain stats are always useful. I wouldn’t leave home without a bit of toughness and vitality. Healing is literally always a useful stat. Same for power. The only ones that really depend on circumstances are boon/condition based stats. Still, if you neglect one, you still get a pretty good overall spread.

I bet you dollars to dimes, that a team wearing all celestial performs better overall than a team wearing any other stat. Sure, optimization works in some places, yet that’s where celestial comes in.
- in specialization cases you’re 30% less efficient than the optimal build
- in specialization cases you’re 100% more efficient than a bad build
- on average, you’re 20% more efficient than any other stat combo.

So for a person who doesn’t care about speedrunning and farming, celestial is one of the best stat combos possible, because all content can be done with it relatively efficient. Would I be wrong to claim that most people don’t care about such boring things?

Most people don’t care about perfect play, as long as they can finish the content at hand. Most people don’t want 10 gear sets for all the min-maxing in different dungeon paths. I don’t feel good with min-maxing, because every second in a spreadsheet, could be better spent ingame, having fun. I’m pretty sure most people rather play GW2.exe than GW2.xls

That doesn’t take away from the achievement of a perfect speedrun, but please, some people just don’t care and want a simple set with all stats.

Perhaps the most ironic thing in this thread is all the anti-elitist elitism.

Pointing out the flaws in hate against gays does not equate to discrimination of religion.

Telling a racist to shut his mouth is not the same as being racist for denying his white pride.

Explaining an elitist that I want to play a fun build instead of a cookie cutter, does not equate to elitism.

A client for Linux

If the public at large knew what computer hobbyists/enthusiasts know about computers, both Apple and Microsoft would be out of business. Random thought, and definitely true.

On the other hand, the public at large are not computer hobbyists, which means they don’t have the hundreds of hours required to learn install a basic word processor on a computer, or to dig through hundreds of threads debating Vi and Emacs. Anyone can work with Windows in a matter of minutes. That’s a fact.

Sure you’re right in theory, but if the public at large knew how to make decent clothing, Abercrombie&Fitch would be out of business too. Same goes for McDonald’s if the public knew how to make affordable food. The boon of windows is simplicity. It works out of the box. That’s simply not true for linux.

So let linux be what linux is for … enthousiasts, and let the public at large use something which is made for the public at large… windows. Why try square the circle all the time.

PS: i’m just posting to bumb this thread. If a dev has some spare time and wants to waste it on less than 1% of the gaming population, he should most certainly do so, but it can’t be a priority.

IN OVERALL response to this thread, you can always stop being stubborn and expect a company to invest millions to satisfy a 1% market share (yes they are noisy but still 1%) and just dual boot Windows, its not like anyone pays for Windows these days who has half a brain. Which I do not have as I paid for it.

MSDN subscriptions for the win. Have a job, get 10 legal windows licenses for free, per Windows release starting at win3.11. That’s ten licenses for win8 basic, pro, enterprise and ultimate each.

Let fractalers buy double stat infusions too

I see you put in double stat infusions for the WvW players + 5 stat with +1 wvw stat. Why do fractalers not get the option to purchase +5 stat with +5 agony? With the current system you’d have to craft such an infusion which is insanely expensive. Please be consistent and add such an option.

I don’t see the relevance. The agony infusion system was designed as gear gating for hardcore farmers. They should be most happy with the expensive infusions for their endgame. In PVP other considerations apply.

All stats Ascended

Min-max builds shine in certain situations and are absolute rubbish in others. Best example is zerker gear, which leads to downed players doing zero dps at many bosses.

Celestial on the other hand is master of none, which leads to extremely versatile characters. They add to dps, conditions and support with more stats than any other build.
In real life that’s the same. Most jobs rather have someone who can speak 5 languages mediocre than one flawlessly.

I’ve been hovering over those boxes, but 1200 is just too many gems. Happy I didn’t.

Seriously a.net, time to get this crap out of the gem store. I’ve got a very fat wallet and nothing to spend it on. I’d be spending far more in the store if those tickets would be up for 800 gems each.

Get something decent in the store, something I want to spend money on without triggering all my failsaves.

Too many casuals will probably disagree with this.

It’s much better to remain hidden and not talk; not contribute. Especially when you’re wearing terrible equipment; specced into the worst traits and using the worst utilities.

I play my character the way I want, and if that means you don’t want to play with me … I got over that in kindergarten. Twenty-five years later, I don’t care if people want me in their little playgroups. Your behaviour doesn’t suit the age requirement on the box.

A Casually Fading Game

There is a different between challenging and grinding… this game is much more of the latter, but we grind to make our characters feel powerful… a progression trait that is absent in this game.

Could you imagine if Blizzard dropped in a jump puzzle such as the Mad Kings Tower?

I agree, infact the whole idea of a jump puzzles in an mmorpg… and especially in the Guild Wars franchise, given how non existed in the first game is mind boggling, It’s like someone putting in jump puzzles in a Call of Duty game……..

It’s pretty obvious actually. The #1 complaint in GW1 was lack of jumping. Of all things to complain about … so A.net put jumping in GW2, with a vengeance.

Reason for asking is because my wife is pregnant and is awaiting twins. So I want to persue the same things in GW2! O_O

I’d suggest fable for that. It is a brilliant game, good atmosphere and you can pursue relations, housing and kids.
