Miranda Zero – Ele / Twitch Zero – Mes / Chargrin Soulboom – Engi
Aliera Zero – Guardian / Reaver Zero – Necro
I know early on in HOT players were running COF P1 to raise their Tyrian mastery level. Is this still the preferred method? Are enough players still running that dungeon?
The title of this thread would seem to indicate a lack of understanding. This is a L2P issue. Retaliation is easily countered.
Permaboons shouldn ’t be in the game, nor should engi have an enormous source of its damage come from retal.
Good thing neither of those things is true then.
umm I’m wondering where Robert Gee is :P
I think there is only Karl left, hence the long time between small updates.
The mesmer changes do remind me of Karl’s work on other professions.
As Shion noted, the automatic Elixir S (self-regulating defenses) is a double-edged sword. When I first started using this trait, it would always take me by surprise, and I would run away right as it triggered, rather than stay in the fight and try to rez or stomp. It has some serious drawbacks: there is no way to cancel it, it locks you out of all your skills (including condi cleanses) and everyone knows exactly when it will trigger and how long it lasts. Good players will just stay on the engi and burst them down and/or CC them as soon is it ends to prevent them from healing afterward.
And it locks you out of contesting the point. I use it but I’ve seriously considered taking it off my build.
The devs currently working on balance undoubtedly browse the forums and reddit, I’m sure they’re aware of the general response to the mesmer changes without having Gaile bring it up, Helseth’s reddit post was prominent. OTOH maybe her feedback will get to higher ups who don’t know. There are also devs who play mesmer though, Jessica Boetticher (sp?) for one.
If you play eyes open you don’t need stability at all.
Factor in lag, even a small amount, plus the number of players in a big fight, plus the visual effects still obscuring much of a fight………….
ENGINEER has always had a lot of access to retal not just scrapper.
What is the kittening campaign against engi all of a sudden when they aren’t even the most powerful class?
Good luck Jeff.
And this is the 2nd ANet person who left for Amazon in the last 6 months.
Only heard of Eric Flannum.
Also Chris Whiteside and Jon Peters.
What are eggplants used for?
Ghosts of Ascalon is by far my favourite GW2 novel so this is a shame.
We need more maps not getting rid of those we do have. Courtyard and Capricorn should be brought back.
1. Hammer still offers too much (good dps, might stacking, evade, block, 1200 ranged AoE stun, triple leap finisher, blast finisher and lightining field). At worst some skills do good damage and offer powerful utility at same time. I feel that warrior’s hammer is more balanced. It excels in one thing: CC, but doesn’t offer high DPS nor any blocks or evades or much mobility. Either the abilities need some shaving or their CDs need considerable increase.
Engi is medium armor compared to high armor warrior hammer being a melee weapon needs the defensive traits on CDs that are not to long to survive. Perhaps shave the damage.
With the change in upgrading system just turn the kitten thing off. Everything used to be T3 almost automatically, it’s not the case anymore…it’s really no longer needed. Zergs finish the event in less than 4 minutes if no one tries to stop them… OP to the max.
Yeah unless you start it immediately the event is much harder to defend if another server starts before you and with the change to upgrading it makes taking objectives easier. Whilst I think defending is too easy this is completely the wrong way to make things better for attackers, its a largely passive, lazy to improve things for attackers.
Anybody who played the original guild wars remember the classes Ritualist and Paragon? Do you think they would make a good addition to the game now? I remember them being quite powerful before. Very doubtable anet will put them back in, but one can hope!
The PvP titles for Guardian and Revenant are Champion Paragon and Champion Ritualist respectively.
The fight can bug out and anet refuse to even address it. I ended up getting through it by grouping up but even then the fight was a clusterkitten with some members dying due to bugs and the final portion of the fight having repeated bugged portions when his breakbar is down but he won’t take damage. Its ludicrous that it hasn’t even been addressed.

Dragon-hunter traps should not have CC.
Traps are cc though by their nature, I’d rather they were all cc and no or little damage.
And the guild name.
Scrappers seem to have too many survivability tools… They have a trait that triggers at 25% hp giving them invulnerability for around 3-4 seconds, multiple ways to heal, speed, etc… Does anyone else feel the same way?
- They are now too good against Conditions (adaptive armor, cleansing synergy, alchemical tinctures, transmute….)
Engis are only OK against condi not strong. I would argue its in a good position vs condi. Engi’s defence against conditions is very active, more than other classes which promotes more skillful play.
They are probably using elixir S as well which gives stealth on toolbelt skill.
It should be noted that elixir gun is in the PvP meta not grenades. They have also just improved toolkit so it may see more use.
I am sorry I do not see such a “consensus”. The majority of names that posted here agreed with the OP.
There are 3 on the thread agreeing with the OP including yourself, another 2 who agreed with aspects but not the general proposition, its not a majority. And the clear consensus outside this thread is that defending has been made too easy. There may be specific issues with siege placement but that doesn’t lead overall to it being harder to defend a keep or tower from being taken.
A little respect for people trying to do a job can go a long way. This game does have a whole lot of people who feel that just because they have spent 40 dollars, they can demand employees be fired or question their competence.
An issue here is that WvW players feel that anet neither respect them nor the mode itself eg. Mike O’Brien’s comments on WvW players.
nades are everything. theres no escaping it
If you’re min maxing nades should be there but there are plenty of powerful builds without them. I don’t use them in pvp and I barely use them in WvW. In PvE Raids are the only thing that probably require them. Hammer is a powerful weapon if using scrapper.
Lets be honest, wvw guild missions were absurdly easy so far. There should be at least some effort put into guild missions, and there should be possibility to fail them, specially when enemy works against you.
Its not hard to guard a camp its just tedious.
I have playved WvW since inception and without reservation can state it harder to defend now as compared to prior. The populations overall THAN were higher so why is it harder to defend now?
The reasons are as stated. The keeps and towers are not designed so as to allow appropiate siege placement. There is far more ranged AOE than there was before that can clear the walls and this AOE hits much harder. In Home BLS it takes much longer to run to camps to get supply so as to effect repairs or build siege.
I’ve seen siege placed where attackers find it very hard to get to and I only know of 1 spot where attackers can place siege that defenders can’t destroy with their siege. Plus there are now shield generators, use them to protect siege and the gate or walls. Not to mention the plethora of tactics now available to defenders which weren’t available before.
The consensus is that defending is easier then before, too easy in fact. The fact that you and the OP state differently just says to me that you are both doing it wrong.

Anet lets them exist but they shouldn’t, they are effectively cheating.
Daily rooms let some people access some of the rewards that would normally be cut off from them due to the torrent of garbage that makes sure that they want to have nothing to do with the potential stress. It seems pretty petty to treat these people like scumbags when really they just want access to the content.
Why should you be able to access the rewards if you aren’t willing to do whats required as per the activity?

Hmm, I recall GWEN meta and mad amount of nothing but hammertrains for the 1st year or year and a half of the game, I was a part of that meta running guard, necro, war purely and exactly because of the old stab. Being completely invulnreable and literally laughing at CCs and condis completely negating a vast majority of builds.
If you are new to the game, just hop on youtube, so many vids still around. There are even a couple going 5 vs map que. Personally I was never as good as those guys but I did manage to command 8 and 10 vs map que back in my day. In addition, to help you recall, please do a search on these very forum archives to see all the issues GWEN meta brought, stability and the lack of it by certain professions and the lack of counters to it as it was, will be right at the top. You just can’t miss it.
The 1st WVW exodus happened exactly and precisely because of this, because of so many classes / players being excluded from it. But at that time population was still strong enough to pick up the slack sort of speak. Now that there are too few new players coming in and couple with other issues.
Whatever the solution is it needs to be balanced and not go to those old ways, as that will just literally half of whatever you have left, CC and condi immune groups to me are worse then current ranged AOE spam groups.
Been playing WvW since beta mainly on ele in WvW. There was no exodus due to the stab, it was apparent within a year how poor anet’s support of the game was. Groups were largely even between melee and ranged, yes they were gwen but that was due to individual class abilities not stab. Glamor mes would have been part of the meta if anet hadn’t stupidly kowtowed to the whingers and nerfed confusion that first time. glamor mesmers were the perfect zerg busting spec and anet ruined it. And you know its changed a bit bit but the meta is still limited. Revenant has changed it a bit but revenant would have worked under the old stab and been in the meta.
forum bug <15 chars>
Stab was meant to be countered with boon stripping, boon corruption, and soft ccs, not hard ccs.
For WVW AOE boon strips are just too weak and too infrequent to accomplish this. In addition soft CCs do not work because they can also be removed by non stop AOE cleanse spam since they are mostly conditions, and in many cases you don’t even need that, jsut have enough -condi duration on you to bring duration of soft CC under 1 tick to be completely immune to it.
The 2 things above is what made stab in its original form stupid OP when added into any build.
if they buff stab, it will jsut be the other extreme, they need to rebalance the above in order to buff stab its somewhat in the middle.
I don’t recall there being too many complaints or problems with the old stab. Stab was applied, necros stripped or corrupted it, eles cc’d the enemy then the groups clashed. If you were co-ordinated well enough the boon stripping and corruption lasted long enough to do its job. And groups were evenly balanced.
Have you been playing WvW long? It’s been terrible decision followed by a 3-4 month disaster zone in wvw, followed by an attempt to clean things up. My point isn’t that Anet should fix terribly implemented decisions like banners, it’s that banners were a bad idea in the first place. Why should we have to wait the 3 or 4 months it took Anet to fix dragon banners when we could have simply avoided the entire fiasco.
Furthermore, it had been made quite clear that we must re-design Anet’s game for them because when we don’t, we get things like golem week and dragon banners. I don’t know what could be more clear about this. The WvW community would be more than willing to try any potential changes or maybe just look over some ideas being had about changes. Instead, we’re left with 4 months of a final product that we put up with, abuse and hopefully troll Anet with enough that someone actually does something to change the implemented idea. For example, I know of guilds that made and geared mesmers to troll guilds with known Anet employees in them simply so that someone at Anet would actually do something about dragon banners. I’m not saying these people are the reason for the changes to dragon banners, but it seems awfully coincidental that the trolling commences and a change is rushed through.
I can’t remember the last time I saw an anet tag in WvW.
And anet still don’t get it and they won’t unless they become far more collaborative with all segments of the community. Look at the change to the centre event. We wanted it removed not the time reduced. Its now worse than it was, virtually impossible to defend against it unless you’re there at the start of it.
Interetsing build but it build doesn’t use dhuumfire because it doesn’t use soul reaping
With the increase in boon corruption its actually getting worse now.
I endorse this suggestion. It used to be on all the time why not now?
I don’t think the OP’s idea would provide the solution we all want.
Here are the facts, as I see them (feel free to challenge them);
- It feels like a chore to do the event when there are no enemies on the map anyway,
- When there are large groups in the event, it IS fun,
No it isn’kittens just a open world style free for all. Doesn’t belong in WvW at all.
What? If you don’t think defending is far far easier now than it used to be you’re doing it wrong.
What is the difference between “kills” and “deaths” on wvwintel.com?
Kills are the number of enemy kills a server has made for the week hence that value would be part of the score now. Deaths are how many times that servers players have died.
Didn’t you find it surprising that Roy, Irenio and Robert all disappeared around october-november. I think there is no-one left except Karl in the balance team. A-net probably hired them for the big specialization update and the elite specs, and then, bye bye.
Yeah anet haven’t exactly been transparent with dev departures before so it makes me wonder as well.
Just more grist for the pattern of anet not thinking holistically about how changes affect other game systems.
I like most of the changes except for the balance changes which IMHO are poor. The extent of boon corruption on necros is over the top and sets the class up for a fall next balance path. The nerfs to mesmers and elementalists should have been balanced by buffs to other abilities within the classes. The nerfs, especially for mesmer, have been made to abilities which have a ripple effect on other abilities which have not been changed, in short a holistic approach to the balance changes should have been adopted to ensure the classes are still viable in the competitive modes of the game but wasn’t.
scrapper was a top tier class along with b/s mesmer bunker
mesmer got gutted and scrapper just got a couple of laughable cooldown increases, lol
The mesmer changes are poor I agree but scrapper hardly dominated the meta like chronobunker did.
-Rewards from reward tracks are very very sub par and require a great deal of luck to get anything on par of PvE or WvW. Even though this is not the main objective of PvP (to make money) most PvP players would like to save up for content that can be used in all 3 areas of GW2. ((Legendaries, Unique Skins, mini pets, super rare particle infusions like ghostly, Chak, Bee, Polys etc))
I agree with everything you wrote except for this. The PvP rewards are significantly greater than WvW in my experience, more skins, finishers etc and more gold. Both modes significantly lag behind PvE though, would love for more specific PvP cosmetic rewards like special PvP infusions.
Ridiculous how Anet constantly ignore that the ele class needs HUGE redesign to ever feel as viable and versatile as other classes nowadays do.
That is a pretty myopic viewpoint you’ve got going there, half the classes in the game have design issues, for example anything that uses AI which is basically broken to various extents on virtually every class that uses it, of course for some classes that is less of an issue than others, but on classes where it plays a big part like Ranger, Mesmer, etc it is a big problem, that has existed the entire game.
You should also get off your whinebox when it comes to ele and the entire game, where ele has been “meta” in PvE & WvW pretty much the entire game,
You mean apart from that small period of 2 years when it wasn’t.
They do it to drum up business for gw2 = more people playing = a greater return then 200k = more investment.
Yes but given the actual no. of viewers its very doubtful they are receiving a return on their $400K
“Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” comes to mind here.
Ridiculous how Anet constantly ignore that the ele class needs HUGE redesign to ever feel as viable and versatile as other classes nowadays do.
It really shows that ele was the first class designed, before MAJOR design changes in the game, and it never got updated to that new paradigm.
Its a pattern, they don’t take the holistic approach to balancing which is required. Its evident again with the current nerfs to eles and mesmers. And I doubt they will ever get it while certain designers are there.
How about they just get the fundamentals of the mode right first before those sort of iterations.
Let us see the amount of PPK the servers have earned ingame.
I don’t see why you would implement something without showing us the effect it has on the total score. It takes the fun away from it if you ask me.Scoreboard, sounds really complicated to program. Maybe in 2018 after the overhaul.
Its already in the API. API sites have the Kill/Death breakdown.
No. burn damage was broken at that time. Every meta has something that is broken. Just adapt.
Burn damage had been toned down on the relevant classes at that point.
I forgot it is actually used in the meta marauder build so it is inline with their intention to reduce engi sustain.
This is the first change I’ve been actually really disappointed with, in the long line of mesmer changes since the game first came out. It just feels so badly thought out and as if the development team has never played with one in any sort of group content.
And there for a few months we had representation and consideration from the devs.
If you are reading this, Robert Gee, thank you so much for your efforts to make our profession desirable, even if it turned into this. From the June 23 patch to the first few months of HoT, your dedication to making Mesmer stand out was and still is very much appreciated.
What if he was behind this patch in relation to the mesmer changes?
The entire balance team is kittened, its not just any 1 person now. This whole balance patch is a disaster. Perhaps it was Jon Peters leaving I dunno.
