Will the next expansion be discounted?

Considering the quagmire that the HoT pricing caused for them, I’m hoping that they learned a lesson about price points.

Current players should be expected to pay no more than $30 for an expansion (ignoring any premium editions, of course). Whether you want to charge more for new players is up to you, but expansions+full game should not cost as much for someone who already has the full game.

Anything that permits or rewards unattended or “basically unattended” gameplay is bad game design and should be corrected.

What they should have done was put an event chain on the hill that causes the Centaurs to spawn. You have to then clear the whole chain before any new Centaurs spawn back in.

This would have made it so camping the bottom level would result in no gain outside of killing the initial wave of Centaurs.

In order for a “Play How You Want” system to work, you have to provide players with lots of “meh” loot that they can sell (or salvage and sell or craft with) so that they can work towards the good loot by doing whatever.

Hardened Leather and Update.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I really was expecting them to revert a combination of the salvage, drop rate, and crafting recipe changes once the glut of leather had been purged from the market.

All three changes were needed to wipe out the excess supply, but now that the supply is gone, some tweaks need to be made to bring the generation rate up (or consumption rate down, unless of course their plan is to give the same treatment to Gossamer…

I also have previously advocated for insignias to have a leather and a cloth variant, which would cause the two materials to provide a form of price parity between each other (i.e. if cloth is cheap, people use cloth for their crafting. If the price of cloth goes up too high, then people switch to using leather for their crafting).

The greatest sin of the Gear Treadmill is that everything you have worked for up until now gets invalidated forcing you to regear your character before you can play the game.

If you take a break from the game, you wind up getting so far behind on the treadmill that you may never catch up, which is exactly the type of scenario they are trying to make you afraid of in order to incentivize you into always paying them every month so that you don’t fall behind.

It is an insult to the intelligence of gamers.

Adding new tiers of gear (i.e. higher stats) is a trick used by game companies to fool people into thinking that they are being rewarded but what they are really doing is stealing money from you every month to play the same content over and over.

Since this game doesn’t have a subscription, they don’t need to fool people into running on a gear treadmill, so higher stats have no place in this game.

Ahh, I see! So it’s a trick used by game companies to add new challenging content that rewards your efforts! That must be why GW2 adds in lots more casual content with no point or reward then. Thanks for clearing that up!

I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you misread my statement rather than that you are intentionally trying to distort what was said into a strawman.

(Note; the following is opinion and speculation based on information that is likely a year or more old. It is entirely possible that Arenanet has made changes to their policies since that time.)
I think it was early 2016 when there was a thread that showed up on Reddit posted by a user who spent some time (months) TRYING to get banned for verbal abuse. What he reported on his actions and the amount of time it went on was really sad. Eventually a dev made a comment attempting to reason away the problem, and promised that the people in charge of going over reports would be talked to.
Among the statements by Anet in the thread, it’s clear that, at least at that time, that what constitutes “verbal abuse” is not governed by any set rule, but instead completely up to the individual reading the abuse reports. Thus, if someone is reported for telling a player to take their own life, and the person reading the report thinks it’s funny, they have the ability to just mark it as “reviewed” and move on.
Much as I clash swords with them here, I think Anet should experiment for a bit and unleash the forum mods on the game.

If they put the forum mods in charge of game bans, GW2 would be wasteland within hours.

@OP: I’m sorry you had such a miserable experience.

Failure providing more incentive than success is a failure in game design and should be addressed by ArenaNet.

Sure. And the way to address that is by posting the name of the event, an estimate of comparable rewards, and the request to change it. ANet can’t change things until it knows what the issues are. Even then, not all “poor design” situations need to be urgently addressed. There are tons and tons of events in Cursed Shore, so everyone has options, whether they are greedy + reward-driven, interested in trying all the events, or just want their dailies.

An event (and its rewards) aren’t “toxic”; it’s how a tiny fraction of players behave. Things could be better, but they aren’t dire.

The last 4-5 years have seen literally thousands of posts detailing the exact events that need retooling as well as suggestions for improvements which have netted us exactly 1 change (Champ Train in Queensdale, and that was a problem that didn’t exist at launch but was inserted later on). It would seem that anything “broken” related to core Tyria maps is pretty much guaranteed to remain a poorly implemented mess until the last server shuts down.

The problem is that it is simply easier for them to handle verbal abuse reports versus expending substantial time reviewing, redesigning, testing, and implementing changes to a core function of the game that will NOT generate any new revenue.

Major profit is primarily derived through speculation, which is not something that someone can really guide you on. You have to attempt to intuit the future based on what you know of the items available for sale, how they are currently used, and how you think they might be used based on the little tidbits that leak out regarding future releases. For example, say we hear that the next patch is going to be on a beach. You could assume that maybe a round of new crafting recipes will use beach-themed items such as coral, so you go out and buy a bunch of coral in the hopes that your hunch was right. Once the patch hits and coral is now in high demand, you can sell your coral at a mark up for profit.

There is also profit available in crafting and flipping, though those are usually quite competitive and do not scale up (i.e. you can make 10 and sell 10 or you can make 100 and sell 10).

New Infinite Tools, why not separately?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mtpelion.4562

mtpelion.4562

They should have created a basic “Unlimited Tool” for each type that had a medium cost attached to it.

Then they should have sold the skins (and the affiliated animations) separately allowing your basic “Unlimited Tool” to become any of the new tools as you desire (just like buying an outfit).

Finally, they should have added an “enrichment slot” to gathering tools that gives you a % chance to obtain a specific bonus item (sprockets, Azurite, UM, snowflakes, etc.) when it is equipped in a gathering tool. Unlimited versions of these enrichments could then ALSO be sold on the gem store.

This system would have not only permitted players to have significant control over their customization and convenience, but would have resulting in MORE gemstore revenue for ArenaNet.

Third party DPS meters and game hostility...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mtpelion.4562

mtpelion.4562

DPS meters, when used in a training arena by elite level players who are looking to develop builds for their speed runs, are a great tool.

DPS meters, when used by people who believe themselves to be elite (but are somehow mysteriously not being invited to the elite level raid groups) to exclude other players from their LFG for “not playing right” are kitten.

All tools can be used appropriately for good or inappropriately for bad. The problem with DPS meters is that the good use accounts for less than 5% and the majority of players will never be in a group with that experience. The remaining 95% of people using them or being subjected to them will have a purely negative experience as a result of them.

For Exotic armor, you’re going to want a mix of Rampager, Rabid, and Carrion, depending on how much survivability you need. Your best bet is to use the Trading Post filter for condition damage in the armor category to find the named sets since those will be much cheaper to buy than the ones that are actually named “Rampager”, etc.

Crafting is one guaranteed way to get Ascended armor. Other than that, just keep doing Fractals every day. You get boxes of Ascended armor/weapons which you can restat to the kind you want, as well as currency that can be used to buy Ascended gear from the fractal vendors. You don’t have to do T4, but try to get as many of the fractal dailies done each day that you can.

Please, a clear statement re: AFK farming.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mtpelion.4562

mtpelion.4562

Short version:

If you have autocast on skill #1, walking away from your PC while you are engaged in combat will result in your character continuing combat while you are away until such time as the mob you had targeted is dead (or moves behind you) at which point your character stops auto-casting. This would NOT represent AFK farming, unless it was evident that you had taken some other action to ensure that your character would continue to fight after the first enemy died or otherwise avoided the automatic logout system.

Walking away when not in combat will result in your character never attacking.

In both cases above, pets/minions/turrets COULD engage in combat which could/would run afoul of the AFK farming rules depending on the facts and circumstances.

If you have autocast on any other skill (that does not require a target), walking away from your PC would definitely be more likely to be deemed AFK farming since you would be initiating combat while away (every time the autocast goes off).

In any given scenario, fictional or otherwise, the GM who investigates will be looking at the facts and circumstances of the situation to make a judgment call.

Generally speaking, the safe route for stepping away briefly is to park yourself far away from any mob spawns or hop into your Guild Hall/PvP Lobby. Having to be AFK is a fact of life, and they aren’t looking to create ticky-tack rules to penalize you for it, however they do need to make the policy against unattended gameplay general enough to be useful in those cases where it is evident a player found a loophole.

Please, a clear statement re: AFK farming.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

mtpelion.4562

Skill #1 autocast functions differently from other “no target required” autocast skills that are used to bypass the auto-logout. Dropping your character somewhere and only having auto-cast on skill 1 should result in you being kicked to the login screen.

Ok .. so with that in mind and we also take a look again at what
Chris Cleary wrote in his post regarding the 3 “rules”.

The auto-cast feature was never intended to be used as an AFK farming mechanism, and usage of the auto-cast feature while AFK is fine as long as it is not used to facilitate unattended gameplay.

1) Using skill (1 or more) while AFK
2) AFKing in a place where it is beneficial for your character to be at
3) Unresponsive to interaction with GMs

If all 3 of these apply to what you are doing, you may get actioned for it.

(The last line in the quote is or particular interest as i see it)

Then keep in mind the Fictional Scenario.

Is your answer still yes regarding the earlyer yes or no Question ?
______________________________________________________________________________
¥ameon

Skill #1 will only autocast until the current target is dead, so your Character would NOT be violating rule 1 in this example. You would either never be using a skill while AFK, or would only be doing so for less than 1 minute until the mob you attacked before going AFK died and your character went dormant until auto-logout kicked in.

So if for example you where investigated by a GM while AFK in a location that
was Advantageous to you (With Auto-Cast Turned on but as above described not
funktional in a way as to facilitate Unattended Gameplay) . . and you where
not responding to the GM (As you are AFK) . . and in addition to this there
is anouther Funktion (Like Enemy uses fear or in other ways make your
character move while being AFK) that would/could interrupt the Auto-Logout
Funktion . . .

I wonder if a player could, would or should get actioned in the above mentioned
Scenario.

______________________________________________________________________________

Perhaps this question could be answered with either a yes or a no.

Seems like the answer would be “yes”.

1. The character was AFK in a location that was advantageous for them (with regard to getting loot while AFK).

2. The player did not respond to the GM (because they were AFK).

3. Fear/knockback, etc. does not turn off auto-cast, and is thus irrelevant.

The fact that raids are not well attended is not a function of there being no carrot (or even the lack of a huge carrot), but rather that they were never designed for casual players, which make up the vast majority of the game’s playerbase.

You can offer all the carrots you want, but without building in-game systems that both make raids substantially easier to organize and complete, the vast majority will either never attempt them, or try them once and never go back.
