The pvp daily is very fast to get. The monthly… It could take days to find a necro to kill….
Was going to post something entirey different then I read this…. My necro and I will be staying the hell away of sPvP then.
Guess its necro hunting season xD
Haha game on!
The trouble is double when it comes to the wily necro.
There’s not all that many of them in game.
And, on top of having vastly deep pools of vitality,
You have to keep yourself from being eaten by their “friends” whilst you attempt to kill the master. Twice.
I got a sense of the “fear” that maybe people feel in sPvP yesterday when I got to the new map. I didn’t know where to go or what to do. A new buff is available? How do I get it?
First time or two on a map is disorienting.
The pvp daily is very fast to get. The monthly… It could take days to find a necro to kill….
Heavy isn’t great on human females.
Go male. Unless you’re a female IRL, in which case don’t play male humans — do a diff race.
Honestly, it purely looks like Anet is travelling purely down the greedy gambling box path, especially after the disastrous halloween events. Honestly, if you guys spend even 1c on the TP to gamble and lose, its your own fault, I for one – will not be spending any amount of money.
Why would you call it disastrous? Rumor has it many many people bought gems for Mad King.
It’s not greedy on their part, but rather they’re playing in to humans’ covetous nature. A company exists to earn a profit. It’s not a moral failure or a sin. It’s a purpose.
Given that most of their customers are EU, it’s nice to have a primetime for them event this go-round.
They gap between Exotic and legendary was an effort gap.
Ascended gear was intended to fill that gap.
However, by adding better stats to ascended gear they successfully created ANOTHER gap to take the original gaps place.
GG Arenanet on becoming EA; fix one problem, create another even worse problem.
There wasn’t even an effort gap! They put Ascended items in for no reason except to cater to people who can’t live without higher numbers.
Fact is if you’ve been watching feedback here and on other gaming sites, there were a lot of people who felt like there’s not much to do in GW2, no endgame, boring after you hit 80, “i don’t want legendary and got full exotics right after I got 80, so I quit logging in” and over and over, the flames about no endgame.
So… here’s some endgame. With fractal, so no matter how you do it, it never ends. Smoke em if you got em, we’ll be here a while.
Hey at least you got a captain. I coulda sworn when I was in there the captain had left it on autopilot and abandoned his post. I guess to go to some party with his biographer…
Either decide that you want it or decide you don’t want it. The game will continue to play the same with your exotic set.
i have to say this line just makes no sense to me.
i have to assume you mean “if you never go WvW.” and just left that off.
If you’re the kind of player who can’t win in wvw without the absolute max possible stats, then go ahead. It was never meant to be balanced there anyway, that’s why gem/gold buyers can buy more stuff.
I honestly do just as fine there with my lowbie alts as I do on my 80s. Cuz you don’t need exotic to run an arrow cart.
I really think you may actually end up doing better with your runed wvw gear than ascended. Time will tell.
WvW bears almost no resemblance to PvP. The 2 systems don’t even intersect.
Try playing more WvW. sPvP to me is more like some cross between Hero Battles and Alliance Battles (complete jokes in GW) than they are to a true PvP format.
Don’t be a jerk. I’ve played it plenty. If you don’t like sPvP, that’s totally fine. Call it names if you like.
That doesn’t change the fact that from the ground up, the two systems don’t intersect. You go to wvw with your pve gear and pve spec. The skills work in their usual pve ways.
Go to sPvP and you have a completely different set of gear. You can’t equip your wvw gear, no matter how hard you try. Your armor and weapons don’t have stats on them. Only an amulet. Everything is free. You earn no xp gold karma or badges… Get the point?
In wvw you can do pve achievements, including your daily and part of your monthly. The monthly calls for “player kills,” yet none of my sPvP kills count toward it….
why why why? Oh yeah, because WvW bears almost no resemblance to PvP. The 2 systems don’t even intersect.
Whatever man, I’m going to just chill and watch the train wreck happening. It’s obvious they’re ignoring everything we’re saying.
I guess I got my 60 bucks worth.
Yeah I got my 60 bucks worth, too. $140 cuz I got the collectors for my son, too. No big deal, the $$.
I think they weren’t ignoring everything and actually responding. Cuz these forums had thread after thread, complaint after complaint from people who geared up and then felt like there was nothing left to do.
It’s all over the game sites. GW2 has no end game. Plays great, but no end game. Gets boring after 80, nothing do to.
Players chanted that like a mantra. So ok, now there’s something to do.
Or not if you don’t want to.
Either decide that you want it or decide you don’t want it. The game will continue to play the same with your exotic set.
I’m actually not all that troubled by it.
Right now everywhere I go my character feels powerful with exotics. Heck, even my MF set, I win pve.
I think even if I weren’t going to play the new stuff, my exotic gear will continue to let me farm, explore, get achieves. That there’s even higher gear… I’ll still do Orr (if I do Orr) in MF exotics.
If it’s anything like the Mad King Labrynth and Ascent into Madness, it will be very lucrative for lower-levels.
Yeah, I read it twice, too.
When ArenaNet means “green” they say “masterwork”
When they mean “yellow” they say “rare”
If people spent even a quarter of what they claimed to have spent on keys for the Mad King event, ANet would be positively stupid not to repeat.
There are people with hundreds of gold. Let this slurp it up.
There are people with credit-cards burning a hole in their pocket. Let this pad ANet’s accounts and keep our game healthy.
It’s just like a state lottery — “for entertainment only” turns into “tax on the compulsively ignorant”
Kitties and puppies! What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, ya.
Congratulations. You managed to read half of my second paragraph.
But yeah, it is OCD. There are game types that cater to it, like pretty much all collection games. That’s what the achievement points are, btw. But, games that trip my OCD trigger, then make it not fun to satisfy, as this does, tend to get uninstalled as I lose interest.
I’m not OCD, but I have to admit when I read it I thought “cool!” followed by “kittens!”
It’s nice to have at least a little attention to the side of the game that everyone seems to forget. But up til now, I enjoyed doing sPvP a couple times per week, not having to do it every day and seeing the clock getting close to when I have to leave for work and zomg I don’t have it done yet.
A principle of OCD is it’s never fun. I’m sorry.
I was assuming they’d not be “collectible” just like candy corn, nougat, etc weren’t collectible.
Do your daily. Play the game doing things in combat zones (it really doesn’t matter which). Sell the stuff you loot. Don’t spend money. Have Fun™!
WvW bears almost no resemblance to PvP. The 2 systems don’t even intersect.
WoW, that’s really OCD to be troubled by sPvP dailies if you don’t like sPvP.
I think it’s great because pvpers had up til now been excluded from daily and monthly achieves unless they went and did a lot of things outside of their preferred mode of play. Now everyone can be miserable.
Kitties and puppies! What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, ya.
Switch your build to power/crit. It’s the right thing to do.
“By that logic anything up until now that wasn’t an Exotic tier item has been considered an obsolete item? "
Yes. Yes it is. Seriously? Look at rares : 15 silver a piece. Look at exotics, 1+ gold for most of them (usually, the minimum craft cost + a %). . .
Yellows cost more then 15 silver to make, yet sell for 15 silver. WHY? Simple, that’s the price ectos are at. Hence, obsolete. People go drops -> maybe yellows -> exotics and never look at yellows again. (I went blues/greens to exotics personally)
The biggest difference in moving from rares to exotics are the base stats such as weapon damage and armor value. The additional Power/Precision/Toughness/etc increase is hardly noticeable, to me anyway. I had no trouble stomping the PvE scene or the WvW scene with my rares and when I upgraded to exotics I saw a slight increase in my performance but nothing that made me think “OMGWTFHAVEIBEENDOINGTHISENTIRETIME!?!?!”. Anyone who deems something “obsolete” because it’s lacking a whopping 5 stat points is, IMO, probably a min/maxer. I can kick someone’s teeth in with 3k Power or 2k Power, hardly makes a difference in the grand scheme of stats.
OK. A few points. Weapon damage has a very major role in how much damage you do. The higher quality of the weapon, the higher the base damage. THEY ARE MAKING LEGENDARIES BETTER. Just thought I’d toss that your way in case you missed it. The single biggest factor in power escalation is going to be the legendary weapons that are already in play… they are upgrading them. This will have dramatic effect in the game… but you’ll notice yourselves soon enough.
The other point I’d like to make, because it was mentioned earlier in this thread…. “attack” isn’t a stat. I don’t care what your hero panel says, because it just isn’t a stat. The damage formula at no time EVER adds your weapon damage to your power stat. It is completely irrelevant what your “attack” is. Your 2000 attack could be over 25 times better than my 2000 attack…. how you ask? 1k weapon damage times 1k power = 1 million … vs my 20 weapon damage times my 1980 power = 39600. Arbitrary and unlikely, but illustrates the point. Attack isn’t inherently meaningful.
(snipped)
Math on a forum like this gets skipped over, so I won’t go into too much detail.
Check the wiki. The formulas are there, and the other relevant ones aren’t difficult to work out.
It suffices to say you have it all wrong. Just on this bit here, weapon damage adds with power to determine direct damage dealt, which is inversely proportional to the sum of armor and toughness.
Aside from the infusions, you have to recognize that the stats increase from tier to tier is very small in GW2.
A naked untraited character has about 2000 attack. With full power gear, you’ll have about 3000 attack. Adding a few points each to 3 slots, you just won’t see any change. Even if eventually we get all 12 gear slots with a few more points each, it doesn’t add up to a noticable change in performance (meaning a mob that takes 10 hits to kill with full exotics will maybe take 9-10 hits after you upgrade every single piece of armor and accessory).
Have you seen a 1v1 fight btwn a full-exotic lvl80 and a lvl20 in greens in WvW? I hate to say it, but the difference is there, and rather noticeable, even if the 80 uses nothing but autoattack…
Try it sometime, if you don’t believe me. Gear matters a lot already, this will further discourage newcomers.
That’s a 60 level difference as well as two tiers difference. Absurdly, yes, it makes a big difference. But we’re not talking about different levels and gear. Just tiers of lvl 80 gear.
Have you tried fighting a mob with your magic find set, and then fight the same mob with your regular set? Really really hard to tell the difference (to the point I dyed my mf to look distinct from my regular).
How about look at the formulas? Or if afraid of math – Try it out on a heavy golem. You’ll go o.O “mulch.2586 was right”
I joined up for personal story a lot, and that’s the way it goes. The player who’s the guest does get the usual sorts of xp and loot, but not the quest reward and not advancement.
Warrior is best for kill speed and has great self-survival and group utility.
Ranger is easy to play, but is low dps in dungeon groups.
It’ll only last til the “free trial” period is over
To me the big problem with wvw has been and continues to be that most of the meta is not about the actual game, but rather ways of taking advantage of broken aspects.
Portal bomb — It feels cheap and makes the game seem stupid.
If you make the effort to appreciate the formulas underlying your character’s performance, you’ll see the difference in performance isn’t worth getting upset. If you approximate the non-existing gear you wish you could have, the performance is still very similar.
Hadn’t realized til this thread how many people spent gold for their exotics.
/shrug
So what do you do with your karma, dungeon tokens, badges, and materials?
Very cool idea, thanks!
I think they learned their lesson last month’s event, the flaming uproar when it was a few hours late.
When it’s ready to coin a phrase…
There’s only 2 rings you grinded that bear replacing. Perhaps a back slot if you paid the 5 gold.
But look at what the stats do in the game. If you take a microscopic view of a particular piece you can think “hey this ascended is a lot better than my exotic.”
Those of us who wore rares while we got the karma for our exotics came to discover that our characters perform pretty much the same, regardless. And when you look at the equations for damage, you can see why.
Gear’s just not that big a deal.
It’s true there are some “missing” stat combos.
It’s false to think it matters too much for your character’s performance.
Just build a set that’s close to what you want. Your performance will be indistinguishable from how it’d be if you had exactly what you wanted.
I once had a whole dye kit drop. That was really cool until I opened it and found it full of 50-shades of bleh.
No matter how many dyes I have on a character, I find myself only using a couple.
I usually enjoy a bit of “gotta catch em all” but w/ GW2 dyes, almost all of them I click in and never actually use.
The chainsword, you have to see it “in person.” It shows that they really can do some amazing things with skins in this game. The greatsaw truly merits breaking out the kittie censor. Over the top fluffy bag of kittens with a side of kittenly kitten-sauce.
I don’t know why so much of the other stuff they launched with is underwhelming, but it gives me hope for future items.
If you buy with gold, sure. But my 80s mostly wear gear they got for “free.”
Nothing is free. And in all cases you cannot get exotic jewelry without paying 2.5g piece which adds up to 12-13g in total, unless you use a LOT of WvWvW badges.
Hey guys. Let’s try to keep on topic please. Did you guys go for the stats or the looks? Thanks!
I certainly don’t get jewelry for the looks. o.O
My S.O. plays a 400 jeweler and gives me her wares without charge (and of course happily receives my mats). And my guild has an extensive share-trade system.
I really like the looks of both my karma sets. I skinned some cultural on the heavy to get a look I like. I also re-skinned my crafted MF set, which has TP-bought runes.
I got some dungeon gear. Saving my wvw-badges for the time being.
Trading Post – IMO it’s only for getting named weapons/armor with distinctive skins (as one of the very few sexy medium skins is named).
At lower levels, I definitely feel like MF helps my alts.
On my 80s, I’ll admit I’m unimpressed with the difference. However, I’m even less impressed with the performance difference I see when I put on my regular non-MF gear. I can hardly tell, and in fact have found myself wearing the wrong suit without noticing for a long time. Kill speed is about the same no matter which set I wear.
So… why not wear MF?
Aside from the infusions, you have to recognize that the stats increase from tier to tier is very small in GW2.
A naked untraited character has about 2000 attack. With full power gear, you’ll have about 3000 attack. Adding a few points each to 3 slots, you just won’t see any change. Even if eventually we get all 12 gear slots with a few more points each, it doesn’t add up to a noticable change in performance (meaning a mob that takes 10 hits to kill with full exotics will maybe take 9-10 hits after you upgrade every single piece of armor and accessory).
It’s demographics.
My gamer friends are the type guys who don’t think twice about dropping a small amount to try a game. The big hold-up stopping them from doing GW2 is either that they don’t do computer games or don’t want to take the time required to try a MMO. For us, we either already have it, or we don’t want it (or both).
Let’s face it, most games you can play, enjoy, and maybe even be done with in the time it takes to download GW2.
My son, on the other hand, has friends who’re definitely interested in GW2, but being students, don’t have an extra $60 to try out something. So his friends will use up all of his and one of mine. At the end of it, they’ll prob’ly all go back to WoW (except the one who plays Runecraft – who knew that game was even still running?), but maybe GW2 will work its way onto their Santa lists.
It will take more time and you will die more. Besides exotics are cheap.
At around 25-30g for a full set of exotics, no they aren’t.
If you buy with gold, sure. But my 80s mostly wear gear they got for “free.”
I don’t get any accessory for its skin. o.O
The thing that’s really struck me in GW2 is how little a gear upgrade matters. I remember in Rift when I got my first relic and had an immediate, notable change in performance from changing one item up one tier. In Lineage 2, gear made a big difference. In WoW my progression-raiding guild also dominated pvp, because we were one of only a couple of guilds with that level of gear. GW2 is just not the same.
In GW2, when I got my whole set of exotic armor, I could hardly tell at all. And currently, when I run with full magic-find, I don’t feel kitten at all, hardly notice any difference. It’s certainly no trouble to use “kitten” gear in the highest zones in the game.
If you look at the math of it, it’s easy to see why. In other games, a tier will represent a 30% increase, and damage formulas magnify it. In GW2, the steps between tiers are small, and the damage formulas are simple linear functions with most of the stats being static (you have 916 base stats and will start with about 2000 attack, naked with no traits).
dyes drop rate feels like same as it used to be
but I have a fully-finished mf set now, but didn’t before
So if you think 2 hrs per day/14 hrs per week is a huge commitment, what do you think of the average 4 hrs per day UK and USA residents spend watching TV?
That a single round of golf is often 5 hrs. My kid’s soccer games are 2 hrs, not counting warm-up.
The cool thing with GW2 is if you have a busy week and can’t play at all, no big deal, the game will wait for you. If you can only play 7 or fewer hours per week, that’s fine, you’ll still get to 80 before too long and be able to play just like everyone else does. It’s ideal game for people who don’t have time for it.
I went to kotaku, didn’t see anything relevant or interesting
Another option some people use for character name is use oddball characters, such as letters with diacritical marks.
It can be a bother because people have trouble whispering or /invite mùlçh because people don’t know how to make the ù.
With surname(s), there’s a lot better chance you can find a good name that’s not yet duplicated.
Thus far, all we’ve seen of ascended is magic-find gear.
Is that what you wear for wvw? Cuz we should have a talk.
Don’t hold your breath. You may need to bring a couple groups to open up those areas.
For the temples, I ended up deciding to get the gear wherever I could and then put on diff runes, rather than hope to find Lyssa’s vendor up. And don’t even think about Balthazar.
Yes, but…
From launch day forward, there’s been a mismatch from the PR vs actual performance.
When it’s ready™
Play with your friends wherever you want
We don’t want players to grind in Guild Wars 2…
Fully-branching personal story (that works??)
My actions have lasting effects, not repetitive events …
I don’t think the new stuff is any bigger breach of the vision than, say traits that haven’t worked since launch…
As far as videos go, I almost wish it were a Rickroll.
A mission, a vision, a cause — these things are great. But the saying goes, the proof is in the pudding.
I think there’s as many great ideas that are poorly implemented as there are good technicians with no vision.
It replaced a word I cant type on the forum with ‘kitten’ :P
Oh here we thought you had a fetish for juvenile felines.
I’d suggest doing the log on before you take your shower, or start it up as you’re heading to exercise or something, so you don’t notice the time it takes. You needn’t even be planning to play to get the updates.
