You can buy a legendary with $$.

No you cannot. You can’t buy map completion, you can’t buy karma, you can’t buy WvW badges, you can’t buy dungeon tokens.

You can buy a precursor with $$ if you are mad enough to do so. It’s impossible to buy a legendary.

Legendary weapons are tradable and there’s a firm selling completed ones.

You can’t use the fact that Chinese hackers illegally sell things as a argument for Anet making the game pay to win.

I didn’t claim that GW is pay to win.

I simply claimed that with tradeable gear, and a gems/cash/gold shop, you can get it.

In particular, if you’re eager enough, you can buy your legendary (no matter the nationality/hacker assumption). And I’m sure if you don’t want to pay $$ for it, you could work out a deal where you pay them gold for it.

It doesn’t make the game pay to win, cuz you could certainly easily get a weapon that performs just as well without spending a dime.

Should I get exotics?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mulch.2586

mulch.2586

If you’re mostly a wvw player, you prob’ly have enough karma when you get 80 for many pieces of exotic karma armor. It’s good and “free.”

If you actually look at the numbers that govern your character’s performance, the differences between rare to exotic on a couple of pieces are almost undetectable. The same will be true with the possible 2 rings and back that you might otherwise grind out doing fractals, except if you want to delve deep into fractals and need the infusions for agony.

So you could play with only exotic and still be very much front of the class in wvw at this point.

As a not-even-80-yet, do you feel like you’re badly handicapping your world’s team in wvw with your below-max everything?

I suppose I’m a casual player, although I am able to commit upwards of 6 hours of play some days. I don’t get swept up in the constant call to arms for dungeons or pvp — there’s more to the game than that and kitten it I’m going to find it.

Oy, that’s not casual at all — you could do the entire month’s worth of dungeons in one play session, plus a couple fractals.

I think it’s fine if you don’t want to wvw and/or dungeon. Myself, I don’t anticipate getting many of the jumping puzzle achievements. But neither do I feel entitled to get credit for them if I don’t do them.

Note that I did say some days, not all the time. Note that I did not say (or even imply) that I am entitled to rewards I don’t obtain. Quite the opposite, if I recall.

Not to be cranky and contrary (I seem to be stuck in a rut right now, sorry).

On the days that I can commit that much time it goes mostly to exploring with guild mates. We make a conscious effort to move on from something if we can’t get it at least going within 20 minutes. For things like mini dungeons and jumping puzzles that sometimes means 2-3 hours getting it done, or it means an hour of putzing around and ultimately achieving nothing beyond a social meetup. We’re not super committed to anything beyond the social.

Right, I got that. I thought I was agreeing with you about not feeling entitled.

IME w/ GW2 (and most other games) — go out and have fun, usually you get rewarded for it. Whereas if you go out and try to get rewarded, you don’t always have fun.

Edit: A side note that’s related to the thread — yall should note that each path counts as a separate dungeon run for the achievement.

As yet, there’s almost no ascended gear in the game. As the only existing pieces are rings and back, there’s almost no benefit to having it at this point.

Presumably in the months to come there’ll be pieces worth getting, and new ways to get them.

But I think it’s silly to think you can’t get them if you don’t play very much. Let’s say you do 1 session of fractals per week. That’s really no different from someone who does 7 sessions of fractals each week, except that it’ll take you longer.

In the meantime, just buy the 5g wvw guild back and a couple exotic rings instead. Total will run you about 10g.

The lost shore mob have attacks that need to be avoided. The krabkas have a string of attacks with that loud sound, each doing a lot of damage.

Every profession has some method to do it. My ranger has to send the pet first and then attack, so the pet eats the big attacks, or dodge roll out of em. My guardian has to dodge and block and blind. The good thing is it’s just the special attacks that hurt – the normal ones you can absorb.

The Orr zones, I really don’t care for. They’re gloomy. They feel contrived. I constantly feel like “let’s just leave this horrible place to these risen.” In particular, it feels to me that they made travel in Orr difficult (that it can take you 15 minutes to go 50 yards because of the unclimbable slopes and maze-like structures) as a way to disguise the lack of content, make it feel big and dangerous. After a bit of time there, honestly I only wear MF gear and get along with the mobs ok. I just can’t do it very long or I get so grumpy I could kick kittens.

When you’re talking “achievements,” it’s really not a stretch to expect players to have achieved a certain level.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

mulch.2586

You do Orr because it’s there, and to make money. It’s not about getting gear, but building wealth.

The OP is lvl 57. If you are reasonably good with money, you’ll be able to afford half or more of an ascended set from the TP. You could, along the way, get plenty of tokens to buy dungeon gear. You will have enough karma to buy a couple pieces of temple gear.

Go farm if you want more/better than the basics.

The Orr zones are good farming, but they are gloomy and unpleasant. They very much embody the idea that if travel is slow and difficult, it makes the game seem bigger and more heroic. Get to 70ish and go see for yourself.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

mulch.2586

What are you playing that you don’t do any damage to a mob at all and just provide 100% support?

I play a guardian and I’m getting plenty of kills in WvW when I play.

Engineer’s have a setup which is ALL heals and no buffs, or damage. They can set up to drop these little heal bags every 15 seconds or so, and do so four times in a row (or close to that…) essentially healing anyone who needs it on a continual basis.

That, is what support is. Support isn’t supposed to be about doing damage. If we can heal and keep the party up, we’ve done our job. We shouldn’t have to hit a mob to get credit for helping the group be successful.

We all know, it isn’t easy to switch rolls while a fight is going on.

I have to say you’re really truly doing it all wrong.

The fundamental coolness of the engineer is being that Swiss-Army knife.

The fundamental of support in Guild Wars is that it’s not a role you do, but a function you serve while you’re doing all the other roles that are essential, too.

If you’re only support, or only tanking, or only healing, or only damage, or only CC, you are doing it wrong.

The only stat that’s not at all helpful, possibly, is condition damage.

The way GW2 works, everyone has a heal, so even tho healing power doesn’t give a lot of benefit, you will get benefit. We all do damage, are vulnerable to taking damage, so it’s all beneficial, even if it comes in smorgasbord form.
Get gear with stats like that, and you can change your build (which is cheap) without changing your gear (which is expensive).

It’s why the Divinity runes are so expensive.

Of course, players could skin their legendary onto a new weapon when gear levels rise. But what difference does it make?

This strikes me similar to the concerns about some wealthy people not paying as high tax rate as normal middle-class. Unfair? Judge for yourself. But there’s sooo few people in that nose-bleed section that it really doesn’t matter in terms of the economy. Same with legendary weapons. Few people have them and no one’s walking around with a bag full.

I know in Rift, you’d submit a ticket and they’d fix your mistake, even when it’s blatant player-error like this. They view it as customer-care, with a real service attitude about support.

NCSoft, in my experience playing Lineage 2, doesn’t view support tickets as a customer-care thing, more like a police thing. So if you got scammed or lost items or whatever, all you can do is file a report.

Just like in real life, you’re better off never talking to a cop.

Well that post seemed helpful and on-topic. It’s a good thing the game has players like you around to support it, otherwise people might get negative impressions.

/sarcasm

I actually did mean for it to be helpful and on-topic.

If you played a game owned by a US company (say Rift or WoW), you’ll have mistaken expectations about customer support when you approach an NCSoft-owned game (or I suspect any Korean/East Asian company, my experience with Sony was similar).

GW2 support are there to enforce rules and report bugs, not there to help you.

Let’s think of what ANet is really good at — what they cut their teeth on in GW1.

Dungeons (meaning small group instanced content)

sPvP

So we get to GW2, I’m gonna expect that it’s gonna be dungeons and sPvP.

Look at what we have, and those are the only parts of the game that aren’t consistent bug-fests. The only reason anyone tolerates WvW is that GW2 is one of the very few games that’s attempting to provide it in a non-pvp game.

Dungeons = be all end all? I don’t think that’s what ANet wants.

But it is what they’re good at.
