I don’t see any treadmill yet in GW2. Rings n backpack, 3 items doesn’t make a treadmill, it’s just 3 pieces.

I was very much feeling that there wasn’t enough of the so-called horizontal content to keep interest, largely because WvW has turned out to be such a disappointment, and because I truly would rather not have any more dungeon gear.

Hopefully they’ll fix bugs and add more content as time goes by.

Only reason is the only reason there ever is in a game — if it’s fun, do it.

One of my primary pvp characters isn’t even lvl 10. The other is 80, mostly cuz I don’t see merit in using a character slot for another of a profession I already have.

Since there’s not any ascended weapons in game, the question requires a fortune-teller.

I’d think a transmuted exotic will not have its stats adjusted, because transmutation makes it a different item. But quite simply a fine transformation stone and the legendary skin could be transmuted again onto whatever weapon you want.

Edit (forgot the other question):
I don’t think it’s a good idea to elevate precursors to ascended status when ascended weapons are added, because that would mean you’d need to Mystic Forge ascended weapons for a small chance and exotic weapons for an even smaller chance to get them (whereas now we can gamble with rare).

The other thing to consider with Runes and Sigils is they don’t always behave like their tooltips suggest. There’s hidden cooldowns and just plain old not-working bugs. So that’d be another thing in favor of gems n crests.

On the other hand, having a rock dog pop up is something fun and different, whereas stats are boring and don’t do nearly enough for all the attention they get.

I think they had some vague intentions that we’d have a world/server community, and that by having all of a server compete together, it would enhance a sense of home. The game lacks a lot of the social tools and functions that you might find in other games to facilitate a sense of community.

Go ahead and call it “team” because we’re all residents of the same world, Tyria, but that’s not where WvW happens.

1. When did you begin playing? (post bw’s)
BW2 (would have been BWE1 except technical/administrative issues)
2. how many hours total do you have? (/age)
Not sure, 400ish
3. What’s your most gold banked so far?
I don’t bank my gold, except when I was deleting a character. so about 55s
4. Do you have a max level character (s)? (number if more than one)
2 lvl 80s for pve, a couple characters with 50 wins in pvp
5. List 1-3 areas / zones / events / tp; where you spend most of your time for income.
I do the dragons, cuz I can pop in and out quickly
6. Do you mainly use MF or not?
I have one full set of exotic mf gear. (and 2 full sets of non mf exotic gear, other characters have rare “of the Noble” gear) I don’t mainly use it, but frequently find I’m wearing it and forgot
7. Have you ever got an exotic weapon from a mob? If so, how many and total?
yes 1
8. Have you ever got an exotic weapon from a chest? If so, how many and total?
yes about 6
9. What’s the most number of rare weapons you have looted in one day or 8hrs time?
Not sure, prob’ly ~10
10. How many rare or exotic weapons do you “expect” to loot in one hour of time?
zero is the most common number I see
11. How many lodestones have you looted total so far? (all types)
half dozen
12. Do you craft? If so, do you have a 400 crafter? if so, how many?
I don’t really craft. I have one 400 crafter that makes weapons.
13. Do you sell your looted crafting mats? (specify optional)
Sometimes — frequently when my collectibles overflow
14. Do you feel your return, (in terms of items, completion, income, etc) for your time, has been worth it?
Hadn’t thought about it
15. In ONE word, what needs improved most; from your perspective?
Long-standing bugs and glitches plague the game, specifically wvw is almost completely about exploiting weaknesses in the game rather than weaknesses in your opponent.

Ha, Greatswords.

Pshhhh.

Hammer.

That is all.

Hammer is a freakin blast on guardian, to be sure, but its DPS is significantly lower.

I prefer hammer (not typically playing my guardian for damage, but he still has quicker kill-speed than my ranger, despite Melandru runes)

But hammer is yet another weapon where I mostly use 1 and 2 because 345 aren’t for damage, and not often used. If you’re using a melee area-effect weapon with a gap-closer on a longish cooldown, you don’t really want to knock your target away from you. Nor on #5 do you want to discourage targets from grouping up (I do like it for a combo field when it doesn’t counter-act CC).

Abilities on some of the weapons serve to make what’s already a pretty simple combat system even flatter. I think that’s another reason people gravitate to the same couple weapon sets is the others aren’t as handy.

Still, compared to the other things that go into a legendary, this doesn’t seem too too bad.

Ironically, it may be that sPvP will be a good way to get them. Seems like they’re in 1/3 of the chests, and with the daily quests, glory boosters are so plentiful.

Pizza doesn’t cost much, buy one every day and they add up.
Play only one character ever, moving forward, you won’t have to grind much for Ascended.
Play one of each profession and you could end up doing nothing but chasing the carrot forever.

But this is neither here nor there. As for people who are saying the Ascended increase is negligible…

Rings only: 0.85% damage over someone in Exotics
Greatsword only: 6.48% damage over someone in Exotics.
Greatsword and rings: 7.19% damage increase over someone in Exotics.

It shouldn’t be too hard to see what the difference becomes when you add up all the gear, and then with infusions on top it gets even higher.

Don’t make up pretend numbers…

Actual numbers, a ring will be less than that. Of course it depends on build and all, but getting all 3 ascended items will be around 1.25% increase in damage if you’re going power-style.

There is no ascended greatsword, and we’ll have to wait and see if/when ascended weapons are added.

For the time being, if you do or if you don’t, doesn’t very much matter.
Using actual number for actual items in game — We’re looking at shaving a second or two off a two-minute boss fight.

Ha, I love this kind of kitten. Take two characters, give them base stats, add the stats from rings and the greatsword they accidentally released, then run the damage formula (you can find it on the wiki). Ascended versus Exotic. My numbers will come up.

Whether it’s +5 power or +15 power is not the issue, the question is how much damage that translates to, versus someone in exotics.

I have done it with the rings, and verified in-game as well. What looks like a meaningful bump in stats ends up being almost invisible in the damage from abilities in game. Less than half a percent from a ring. Actual amount varies, cuz of course if you have a completely defensive build +11 power matters more than if you’ve stacked power.

The greatsword or any weapons haven’t been released in the ascended tier yet.

Why do some people like vertical progression? IMHO, it’s because they are hard-core players who know they will get the best weapons/armor sooner that most, and will be able to grief the “casuals” who haven’t. Catering to this crowd is catering to the worst in the community.

I don’t think it’s about that at all. Certainly not in a game like GW2 where gear stats are so minor.

Even way back in paper-pencil RPGs, there’s a common element of progression. Your character increases in ability as you accomplish various adventures.

Even in real life, our soldiers like to progress in rank, and not just cuz of the women.

Their refusal to do refunds or restore lost items is based on policy, not technology.

Wrong.

“Thank you for contacting the Guild Wars 2 Support Team. We would like to be able to offer refunds or exchanges for purchases, but at this time we’re unable to make these kinds of adjustments to characters. We simply do not have the tools to provide this service.”

But if you show up for a press event, they have no trouble providing you with a fully-equipped character.

You don’t think the internal testers have to actually grind out and equip themselves, do you?

Regardless, they could have those tools if Arenanet wanted them to be able to do reimbursements.

Rather, they have a view that GM’s are rule-keepers, not customer helpers. It’s the same view players of other NCSoft games have encountered, and is in marked contrast from say Trion/Rift, where they routinely provide reimbursements to correct player error. The difference is, of course, $14.99/mth sub fee.

Myself, I’m ok with the GW2 approach. It’s harsh, but at least it’s consistently harsh. Just think of that support button as calling the cops, not an ambulance.

The ranger is pretty easy and slow-paced play with the self-healing pets serving as tanks, but is the lowest performing class in the game. Save it for easy no-brain farming while you watch a show or something.

Nothing matches a warrior for kill speed, and they have great survivability, too.

It’s handy if you duo to arrange it in a way that complements, but really all profession combinations are viable.

Combo-fields are a fun and beneficial way to play with others.
My son’s thief has a lot of combo finishers, but not always a lot of combo fields. So he works pretty well with my guardian and elementalist, both of whom put up fields.

Another think I notice on my guardian is that profession does best when allies are stay pretty close. In contrast a longbow ranger or greatsword mesmer is encouraged to be further away.

One final concern is that some professions don’t really come into their own until higher levels. The ranger plays pretty much the same at level 7 as it does at level 80. The engineer doesn’t blossom until you get your utility bar filled up. Mesmer seems to need utilities and some trait points to feel capable.

Another alternative would be to make them purchasable for karma as well, more uses for karma is always good.

I think karma and cultural armor make sense, more that gold.

Do we think Logan and the other defenders of Divinity’s Reach had to pay for his uniform? Or did he earn it by heroic deeds?

I do think it should be difficult to obtain. Make it a million karma – whatever. My point is that, like the cultural weapons, these are things that distinguish the heroes of a race, and they should be earned by heroic deeds in Tyria, not paypal, not playing the market, not farming.

But these aren’t uniforms, or medals for heroism.

Its fashion. Fashion favors the wealthy, not the heroic.

… and karma is farmed just the same as gold is. So even if they made it karma-purchases you’re still just promoting farming … you’re only removing the ability for people to pay real-life money for fashion.

I’d think “Fashion” should be town clothes, not the uniform you wear to battle.

But yes, to reiterate, yes very much, my view IS that it should take in-game farming of some sort.

If I were setting it up, I’d say complete your story quest and complete all the racial homeland zones, then be able to purchase the T3 (karma or gold, your choice).

Complete your first 2 homeland zones to be able to buy T1

Complete story mode of the local dungeon and explore the zones to buy T2.

Make it mean something more than just “a lot of gold in my purse”

And yes, for heaven’s sake, we need some fashion choices. My supposedly noble-born character is stuck with a peasant’s costume for town clothes.

Hear, hear! I, for one, am never going to bother going for ascended gear – I just don’t want that pressure in my gaming environment. A short walk to being maxed out is fine – leveling to 80 was almost completely free of frustrations in gw2. But I’m really, really not looking forward to level cap increases if those imply that we’ll all have to scramble for level 85 gear. And if all other ascended items are straight-up improvements over exotics… what the hell do they expect casual players to do do be competitive?

There are a couple good answers to that.

The first, most relevant, answer is that they designed the game system for GW2 to have very little reliance on gear, and they’ve committed to progressing with a very shallow power curve.

In the same way that a good player can do quite well in lvl 80 content wearing greens and yellows, you’ll be fine going forward in exotics. Only about 1/5 of your stats come from your gear, so seemingly large differences in gear don’t make for large differences in game.

The second answer is, whatever you like to do in GW2, you should be able to do and feel like you’re getting rewarded for it. So going forward, if they raise the level cap or add more ascended gear, you can either choose to get it or not, and if you choose to get it, you’ll find a variety of ways to do it.

Buying gems with real money is, so far, always the same price. Who knows if someday they’ll have a sale on them.

Buying gems with in-game gold is a somewhat contrived market-based system. The price fluctuates with demand. So far the price of gems seems to go up when there’s an event, and has an inflationary trend.

Dungeons are not actually a great way to make gold. It’s ok, but no better than wvw.

I’d tell you to go choke on a kitten but the mods would get upset.

I am however getting extremely tired of being accused of cheating, or rushing, or buying gold by a jealous minority just because I own a T3 set and they refuse believe it’s possible to earn that gold legit.

120g is not unattainable if you’ve savvy with your gold. I in fact don’t grind anything, I make all my gold simply by trading, when i pick up a sword and go out into the world it’s for the express purpose of kicking kitten and chewing gum (While dressed to kill), not the rewards.

I think most Americans are aware the best way to make money isn’t by farming or making things, but rather by playing the market.

I don’t raise an eyebrow at GW2 characters with expensive tastes in clothes. It’s a game that endorses all methods of attaining wealth — paypal is just as legit as farming which is just as legit as trading. Just farming is very slow.

mulch.2586

Occlusion culling is done by Umbra´s middleware , so that means ANet can do squat about their main performance problem.

BTW ANet has ALL the metrics they ever gona need about this problem, as the client is constantly “phoning home” your performance on every part of the map.

Check out their GDC lecture: Guild Wars 2 programming tricks revealed

I was listening to that lecture this morning… So now the question is… Would it be optimal to run the game on everything high and endure the even worse framerate so it’ll give a more accurate depiction of my experience for the metrics or stick with my current settings that at least make it slightly playable… Either way, no word from the devs in terms of any improvements anytime soon aside from the typical ‘we know about it and are working hard on it’.

If you do whatever it takes to be playable, they’ll get that info, too.
Someone with a good rig running on low graphics is as much an indictment as someone achieving low fps.

Don’t expect miracles. The other thing in the lecture is ANet prefers to reinvent their own wheels, rather than get outsourced code. That was an “ah ha!” moment that shed light on why so many simple common things give them difficulties.

It is frustrating.

The quickest way to get a solution would be for your friends to server-transfer to a less-often full server with you.

We have players all around the globe, and players with all sorts of different play hours. How many of them bot, who knows, doesn’t matter. The point is you’re not getting in.

Last week would have been the time to get on C.D. The servers are fuller this week than last, and the developers relaxed the capacity constraints during the special event.

Later in December we’re sure to have another event. Perhaps that would be a good time to transfer to meet up with your friend.
