I don't feel that supporting is rewarded

I’m thinking thru my guardian and ele. I have a engi too, but he’s still in his 20s.

What profession/weapon combo is there where you have more than 2 group-heal abilities? We have our utilities, of course.

I really think if you’re thinking of yourself as “support” in GW2, you’re doing it wrong. You’re never one thing or another if you’re playing well. You’re always doing it all.

Consider my guardian with a hammer. My #1 key makes a combo field. My #2 key splashes it. Each of these damages opponents, while putting the buff on allies, which heals me. So those #1 skills aren’t dps or healing or support. It’s all three functions at once.

On my ele, I do have a couple skills not on 6 that are pure heal, and some that are pure control, but everything is on cooldowns. It’s not useful to anyone for me to stay in water (or fire or ..) waiting on cooldowns. There’s a reason we can switch attunements, even while we channel.

The tagging system in big groups does promote people to spam their fastest skills. Also promotes wearing of magic find and not playing very well. This is the way of the zerg.

What I’d say is if you want rewards and are playing in a zerg, then you really shouldn’t even be attempting to support. Giving 5 people yet another stack of might is going to be the essential thing that will kill the Shatterer, or will keep poor Plinkks alive? Don’t kid yourself. The point of a zerg is that no one zergling is important or powerful. The strength is in the many.

On Anvil Rock, it’s Monday morning, time to go to work for most folks.

In any mmo, it’s better to bring your own party, rather than shouting for PUGs. If you usually like playing Monday morning, you need a friends list of people who run dungeons on Monday mornings. Hint: they don’t even need to be on Anvil Rock.

AoE Buffing/Healing

It works fine in dungeons and small groups.

I have to say, on my guardian, who heals everytime he gives a buff, it used to be amazing, perhaps overly amazing, in big groups, like a portal-bomb in wvw.

Poof, I’d be apparently alone in the lords room, almost dead to invisible attackers, pop one buff, and be completely full again. Each virtue of courage was a complete heal.

This current setting post nerf was not a good solution, but I can see they needed to do something.

The weird thing is the event didn’t even tax my system at all. If I do something strenuous on it, usually my 2nd fan turns on – turns on about 10 minutes into a dungeon, usually. For this event, it didn’t turn on til I got back to L.A. after it was all over.

The relevant point is — everyone knows an event like this won’t run well in GW2. Because every single day we see it in wvw. The system sucked at launch and continues to suck. Soooooo… why oh why put a signature event based on what you suck at doing?

In contrast, the “decent into madness” Mad King event went pretty well, because we all jumped in to 5-man instances, and had a great time. ANet has been doing instances like that for solo or small group for over half a decade. Of course it was well-received. As are the fractals, lots of fun, and unlike the event they did, the instances are something that might have convinced Rift and WoW players to give GW2 a shot. Giving us that other event — honestly in Rift it would have been awesome, but here it was not fun and didn’t show off the game at all = a bad business decision.

Let’s add it up.

The quest — bugged and bugged.
The massive group battle featured “You were hit for 4017 damage by Unknown using Spit” — rendering problems, just like you see in WvW. Getting portal bombed by a bunch of stealthed baby karkas isn’t “great” imo.

The things ANet is good at, has been good at for almost a decade:
Small group instanced dungeons, and small group pvp.

Things everyone knows are weak:
Quests — any of us who’ve had characters stuck in the storyline for most of the time the game’s been live know quests are NOT ANet’s forte’.
Large group combat — let’s face it, the entire meta of wvw has been about exploiting how crummy the system is, whether it’s portal bombs, hacking the orb, or perma-stealthed thief antics.

They should stick to what they’re good at, especially for a big event where they were trying to lure trial players into putting GW2 on their Xmas lists.

The loot means almost nothing. I love my 20 slotter, don’t get me wrong. But no matter how you do an event, people expect phat lewts. Phat lewts isn’t why we play GW2, tho.

Any business: look at what you’re good at, look at what you’re sucky at.

ANet: great dungeons, fun game
ANet: can’t program quests to run, can’t handle large scale combat

Remember what went well with Mad King – jumping puzzle, dungeon, labrynth

Don’t make an event that depends on the stuff you suck at.

Put this event into a fractal and it’d be awesome.

Anet seems to be clueless about the decision to make Fractals of the Mists accessible to people under lvl 80, because now you see advertised everywhere “lfg FOTM lvl 80 exotics only”

Does anyone else find it ironic that this new dungeon has the same acronym as ‘flavor of the month’?

I like that they can poke a bit of fun at it. FotM, and using “fractals” for an infinitely recursive process gets a z^2 + i, too.

Food and other consumables give bonus xp for kills.

Your fastest leveling will be events. Today, prob’ly your best bet was to go to the new Lost Shores zone.

You get xp from:
Dynamic Events in pve and wvw.
Exploring and filling out your map, including city zones.
Your personal story.
Gathering and crafting.
Renown hearts.
Killing things.

Dungeons are a good source of xp, too, but not til you level up a bit.

Social/cooperative dilemmas are best solved by social methods.

If you’re strongly opinionated about M.F., talk with your gaming buddies about it.

There’s so many places in the game where you can behave selfishly or altruistically. MF% is only one.

Most dungeon runs go very smoothly, even if you eat omnom. And I’d wager most everyone in Orr is wearing +MF gear most of the time. I’m also suspicious that a lot of the posters claiming to hate MF have a set of Traveler’s of the Traveler in their bags.

Dear god, the community’s collective intelligence must have flatlined after the WoW locusts returned.

Do I really have to tell you why this is really a bad statement?

This game should not be a JOB. T6 mats are goign to skyrocket. These people probably bought gold (and considering how conditioned they are to it in WoW I doubt from ANet’s gem store), the dungeons are 50% boring, and this is going against ANet’s do anything (WvW sPvP real PvE dungeons) philosophy.

So wrong, so many levels.

Agreed. So I am forced to endure misery to compete in WvWvW now? Isn’t this the opposite of their promise to us?

You’re not forced. Even more, you’ll compete just as well in WvW if you don’t endure misery.

WvW is not like pvp in GW2. Your build, your gear really doesn’t contribute very much to the whole endeavor. A few stat points isn’t going to matter a lick. And if you’re the kind of player who needs every point he can get, you’re still gonna suck no matter what.

Relax and trust that by the time ascended gear gets past 3 accessory slots, by the time it makes a statistically-discernible difference, there’ll be a bunch of ways you can get that gear.

Who are you to tell me what I need in wvwvw? You don’t even know how I play. They aren’t a few stat points. it’s 20%+ improvement. Why should wvwvw players be pushed to the back of the bus for this new content? Why are you against wvwvw players getting equal treatment?

Here you’re just plain wrong, in the sense of arithmetic.

I do understand you’re feeling hurt and betrayed. That’s real.
20% from 2 rings and a backpack isn’t gonna happen even if you’re upgrading from blue.

(for what it’s worth, I am good at math, taught grad and undergrad for years, with the dozens of pages long CV to prove it — the math for GW2 however is simple but does take a little homework)

I agree with the OP. I think conditions should do MORE damage than direct damage, especially since they haven’t even fixed them doing damage to objects. They also need to fix confusion damage… right now confusion damage sucks.

As a Mesmer, I have a huge problem when it comes to how Confusion is handled in PvE.

Confusion is a lethal player-killer.

I get that people are sad their skills only work for parts of the game. But that’s true about a lot of things. It feels like you’re complaining that your screwdriver doesn’t pound nails right. Ok, but it’s an awesome screwdriver, use it for that.

It’s like me complaining that my guardian’s staff doesn’t have any range. Well, it’s not a ranged weapon. Could it have been? Yes, but not in GW2.

Any build/playstyle in GW2, think about it like something in your toolbox. What job do you want to do? Which tool is right for the job?

There’s only one burn on any target. It can’t be an object. Does that limit my guardian? Yes, unavoidably, because burn is central to guardians.

There’s only one poison. There’s only 25 bleeds. Those are the rules. Learn how to play with them.

The moral of the story is good players don’t condition-build.

Was the same way before launch.

Go ahead and make one. Play a Mantra Mesmer. Play a Signet Ranger. For most of the game, you’ll be fine, cuz the game’s just not that dependent on dps. Your choice.

But it’s absurd to complain about your choice. Cuz you’re the one wot made it.

The cool thing in GW2 is if you don’t want to grind that gear, you don’t have to. Exotic gear works just as well as it ever did.

Anet : “The only way to mitigate Agony damage is by building up resistance through Infusions.”

We can’t use exotics to do this. So, unless we join the treadmill we can’t enjoy challenging new content. Not much room for choice there.

Honey, if you want to enjoy the new content, you’ll get the infusion gear, while enjoying challenging new content.

Are you implying it is easy to get and doesn’t need to be run repeatedly?

I’m saying if you do the process of enjoying the new content, the gear you need for it will happen as a side-effect.

Sorta like how you don’t need to grind karma. I never have, yet have 2 sets of karma armor. Just go play, have fun, and it piles up, almost by accident.

Same thing with infusions. Play the game. Enjoy new content as it comes each month. Trust in the system that you’ll have what you need, just the same as getting exotic gear. You can buy it if you’re that sort of person. Or you can just play and it comes along.

250 T6 mats
50 Ectos
24 skill points
1 Mists essense

This is easy to obtain? Considering you still need an infusion for it and it is a single item slot?

Quick calculations, before prices have even sky-rocketted, show that this would cost you 60 gold for one item using Powerful Bloods and Ectos each at 20 silvers, which both are higher than right now.

Add in the fact that drop rates have been obliterated and this will soon cost 100g+ and it will be 100g that is insanely difficult to gain, as if it wasn’t already.

So 60 hours just for the mats at a fairly good rate of one gold per hour. And diminishing returns makes efficiently farming a gold an hour unlikely. And if the drop rates don’t change back to an un-nerfed state, it will be 100 hours. Just for the mats. For one item.

Does no one else see a problem with this?

I think with any of these things, the smart player will do a cost-benefit analysis of the utility he/she thinks will come of it.

For myself, I made one of the mystic forge recipes for a fancy exotic weapon. Yes, I could have bought a cheap exotic with same stats off the TP. Yes, I could have used my dungeon tokens (altho not to get the same stats). A lot of choices exist. I went ahead with the “expensive” choice because, hey I already had earned it as a side effect of playing the game. To me it was worth it.

From the looks of the ascended gear so far, if it’s gonna take that kind of outlay for an invisible piece with no discernible improvement… no, not worth it to me at this point.

Thus far, ANet has provided expensive ways and very cheap ways to get stuff. I got a couple sets of armor, all for free (karma and dungeon tokens), just by playing the game.

Saves me the (obvious) pain of getting grouped with someone that clueless later by accident.

Asking for “level 80s only” is a bit like saying “hello, I just arrived from WoW and I have no idea how this game works”.

Not really depending on the fractal level a none 80 could really hurt the group. Especially in a pug….

It’s not so much “really hurt” — it’s just kill speed is better with geared 80.

Coming with less than 80 begs the question — why aren’t you 80? Just go get on your main, why not?

I just love this, people who call an argument sad when they are not capable of formulating a real rebuttal. rolleyes
As somebody else stated, it’s simply that you don’t like to be reminded of the fact that once upon a time you knew nothing. And going by some of your statements I’m beginning to think that you know more about gear stats than you do about actual skill,

I think what you’re having a difficult time comprehending is that not everyone in the world is a carebear chomping at the bit, frothing at the mouth, and wildly enthusiastic about helping people. Not many people want to spend their limited game time helping out complete strangers every day of the week, no MMO has ever been like that and no MMO ever will be, sorry to bring you back to reality.

While you’re sitting here acting like you’re so morally superior to the elitists, you haven’t realized that you’re just another elitist in a different form and thus, the circle of the internet continues to go ’round.

EDIT: Dear everyone else in this thread, elitists aren’t keeping you from this content. Your submission to them is what’s keeping you from this content, if some of you would put your dramatics aside you’d realize that elitist groups aren’t the only groups available for FotM. You never see elitists posting that all the casual carebear groups are making it difficult for them to do content, you know why?

Because we make our own groups. :O

Somehow, I think you’d see it differently if a dungeon catered to casuals disadvantaged “elitist” because they were “overqualified” for the dungeon but yet the “elitist” needed to get items from said dungeon to complete an armor set, and “elitist” were the ones who were consistently “kicked” from said groups.

Ya think we wouldn’t have a whole legion of “elitist” on these forums crying foul?

What are you imagining? A dungeon that only lets you in if you’re wearing greens and yellows? That no one is over a certain level?

I remember in Lineage 2 (my first NCSoft game), there were these tournament things you had to do to win for your side, and they had tiers that restricted power levels. So the “elite” of us kept characters deleveled to make the ideal group (because a lot of in-game wealth depended on it).

Trust me, the elite can manage their access to whatever they want.

The biggest slams in reviews against GW2 have been the lack of endgame. Very short time leveling to 80, get geared super easy, find out there’s nothing to do.

It’s casual-friendly to the point it’s serious-gamer-unfriendly. I know I know, get bored you can quit anytime cuz no sub. But some want to play and not feel it’s pointless.

It’s one of those things coming _Soon_™

It’ll be in the form of private pvp arenas where you can 1v1 or 2v2 or 1v3 or whatever, so a lot less constrained and contrived than /duel is in most games.

I think the criticisms miss what’s really up. Because a truly great game could have all those elements.

For me the tipping point was when I got to Straits of Devastation, and found 3 identical zones full of identical mobs with no context, and zone design that’s just annoying. If it weren’t for the other things (dungeons, pvp, wvw), it’d be an awful game.

But crafting is outrageously easy and it gets you xp too. It’s not that it’s hard to get recipes, it’s that it’s too easy so nothing is profitable.
The combat system, sure I get what’s being said. But my characters in other games, if you watched my hands, they were actually rather repetitive, if you had a decent rotation. It’s not the buttons you press, but rather the fun you have while pressing them.

If you’re not enjoying the game, it’s cuz the “fun” part is missing.

I still don’t get the point.

What in GW2 takes 2 hours per day, everyday?

Whatever it is, couldn’t you fit it into whatever play time you wanted?

The whole appeal of GW2 is it’s the MMO for people who don’t like MMOs. No complicated skill trees to learn, no rigid raid schedule, freedom to easily equip your character with gold/gem/$ conversion. Of any mmo I ever saw, this one is made for busy professional.

The fire creatures like you find in Mt Maelstrom are immune to burning.

Ideas like this have been around since D&D where skeletons took only 1 damage from arrows and fireballs would heal fire elementals.

GW2’s style is to be extremely simple.

Certainly you could have systems where blunt and slashing weapons perform worse against heavy armor, where Krait are immune to water damage, etc. Generally to make it fair, you give vulnerabilities as well as resistances, so the critter that’s resistant to fire takes damage from “chilled.” Could make for a game where you’re more strategic about weapon and ability choice. I’d enjoy that, if it were in game.

But consider what GW2 is for. It’s a non-sub game with 2+ million accounts sold. Its appeal is it’s prob’ly the easiest mmo ever, easy to jump into, no need to study, no complicated skill trees or anything like that. K.I.S.S. is more consistent with the mission.
