IMO, the ability for medkit to count as an “on heal” ability on sigils, and for the ft to proc “on crit” sigils, etc, etc, mitigates the lack of a single weapon set.

read around the forums for information about HGH, Rifles, Toolkit, Flamethrower, and Grenades. There are also some topics on leveling PvE builds that use Static discharge.

get cultural T2 armor. so hawt.

the only downside to being an asura engi is that we have to stoop to using mere mechanics and chemistry when in combat.

Also, if they nerfed HGH next patch I would grap a GIANT bowl of popcorn, log into the game and not look at the forums for the next 2 weeks, mostly because the community allready is whining this much, about something that haven’t even happened yet! And I’m truely scared of how much whine that would turn into if they actually did nerf it! :O

The community will get over it, It always does.

Someone engineer will probably find out that if they do a 360 while jumping and activate some innocuous adept trait they manage a damage spike. Then they’ll make an entire build around it, make videos, have the community join in the fun, and then have the trait removed from game in a few months.

All the while these forums will be riddled with people either begging for it to be nerfed, defending it to death or making threads about how crap flamethrower is.

John, I want to have your children. I mean, I want to bring them to term for you. You can inject the embryo beside my kidneys and let it gestate. I offer this so you can maintain your figure forever because it is shining and intelligent and bright and i really don’t want to have to put someone so valuable in front of the kitchen sink without pay.

So,

I hate kittens. A lot. All of them. Especially the kind of kittens who cry foul EVERY patch that the buffs/nerfs/fixes broke everything they have and how life is ruined and Anet failed them, and .. yadda yadda, mewl, mewl, mewl.

These threads are a useless waste of space on my forums and generally never actually start beneficial discussions, and more importantly, tend to turn in to a kind of “troll-trap” that baits people into arguments about things.

I want an option to de-select a check box next to a thread so that I never see it again. To help facilitate this, you can have a check box that “reveals all threads” since you don’t want to accidentally lose important threads, and who knows, mebbe the kittens start meowing and stop mewling.

I mean the only conclusion I can draw from this is that engineers (and warriors and rangers) arent meant to be in the higher tiers of professions while eles and mesmers are.

yes, they do. corrupt boon and well of corruption will both turn retaliation into 3 stacks of confusion.

this mechanic works in a similar way to warrior warhorn 4 which converts condi into boons. it is not random, retaliation ALWAYS turns in to confusion in a corruption pulse.

and now, since people aren’t being hoodwinked into the gimmick of the broken KR trait, people are actually USING other skills we have, giving them much needed PLAYER attention, increasing exposure and discussion, and putting those skills under a proper critical review that consists of more than “zomg 100nades pew pew”.

You may not like it, but the changes that ANet forced upon us were for the better of the entire player base of engineers because engineers are no longer being tricked by the forum community into thinking we only have one build.

Your observations are a minority compared to the wealth of Engineers that have wanted to like their turrets more, but simply couldn’t.

Am I the minority?

You think the forums represent the majority?

“would have liked” “couldn’t” = subjectivity. they “couldn’t” because of all the vitriol here on the forums which told people “gg 100 nades or kitten off dont bother having an opinion” that lasted for MONTHS.

Calling the turret buffs a moot point is as blanket a dismissal of everyone who is not you and is also wrong.

You can take the time to reread the forums yourself if you like, but the consensus is that the KR nerf and Turret buffs have opened up numerous avenues for players to experiment with a great many more tools than they previously did, precisely because they are not “pigeon holed” (and i would argue they never were) into using a gimick exploit to dbl their damage based on one over powered tier one trait that made other builds “seem” non-viable, when in fact they’ve always been viable but constantly looked over by people not capable to see past “zomg nades can dps goods lerl”

sorry, but you will not sway me in to feeling sorry for any of the post BUFF PATCH qq.

You got buffs. You don’t like them. Your problem.

protection injection + 4pc Forge rune + 30% boon duration (Alchemy) = 4.5sec of Prot every (potentially) 5 seconds.

PI has been a staple in every one of my FT builds, often criticized for their lack of CC removal.

One quick question to ya all:
I have a hard time to hit stuff with blowtorch, how do you handle this skill? Potentially it is awesome, but it misses a lot…

face directly to the target – with camera and character

dont move at all or only move forward while using the skill – for the love of god dont strafe!

^reduces the misses but doesnt remove them entirely

feel free to strafe. example: strafe the point ring and fire inwards.

there is nothing wrong with strafing and the ft. all that nonsense was fixed ages ago.

being able to drop two full grenade barrages within one global cooldown is not intended. it was accidental. you cannot tell me that the devs intended any two abilities to be used on the same GCD like tha, otherwise, why have the GCD?

the dbl pop was accidental, and therefore an “exploit”

no one is calling anyone a cheater. exploits and cheats are different things.

eg: jumping. to avoid KR proc was also an exploit.

How do you quantify impact? I see far more turrets in pvp (where one would expect to see them) than I did pre-patch, myself included.

the turret buffs were an improvement, you cannot simply negate them just because you don’t use them

double grenade barrage pop, double elixir pop, and double flame blast pop. granted, they may have only been “hand in the cookie jar” exploits, and not the “stole five hundred billion in gold after crashing two planes into a high rise” kind of exploit, but they were exploits nonetheless.

no, it nerfed one trait that a bunch of people used which fixed an exploit they all knowingly took advantage of and ought to have expected a nerf for, resulting the net loss of two on swap proc effects and one over powered glitch build.

everyone else in the profession got buffed.

Why yes, those are some abilities we have. But like rangers, not everything we have is exactly the best.

if i had a decent computer, i would film myself using every single kit and ability we have in PvE. They all work. All of them. Every last one. To the end. Completely. If you think otherwise, learn to play. (except maybe Scope, kitten you Scope!).

In wvw we have many available builds including pistol condi, ft zerg defense, elixir support, bombs, and other roaming options.

in spvp we have pistol condi, ft assault, turret bunkers, bomb healing, and more.

oh ya, we do still have grenades everywhere as well.

so, what’s your problem?

the patch notes were, by and large, a positive thing for the community.

look at all the posts by new people asking questions.
look at all the builds being discussed that don’t require KR to work.
- (you may not like it, but this is a good thing)
look at all the discussion on turrets.
look at all the new flamethrower threads.
look at all the new “omg engi condi so op” discussion.
look at all the “shh don’t talk about it or we get nerfed” discussion.

you all harp about lack of dev vision or whatever, but i swear that not one of you knows what you want or how to make it yourself. so until you do, try to keep some perspective.

the March patch fixed a lot of broken aspects of our profession. it nerfed a whopping one build and two over used and broken special effects while buffing the other 80% of our profession.

Stop being selfish. You are not the only ones who play engineer.

like i said, there is more to traits than just the effect of each trait. there are also the stat gains from the trees themselves.

you are not just getting 15% ft or eg dmg, you are also getting 200 vitality and 20% boon duration.

ya, but the FT traits are put in places that are beneficial stat wise for the FT user.

30 points in firearms = 300 pre = more crit, plus might stacks and toughness which make up for the lack of necessary Explosives and Inventions traits
(incendiary powder, imo, is a must)

20 points in Alchemy gives vita (always nice in cond heavy matches) plus a host of useful adept traits (vigor, elixir s, protection injection) and the much needed boon duration for making those might stacks count.

20 free points can go where you want.

More tanky? 20 Inventions, take shield and cloak or metal plating and energized armor and bunker up.
More pew pew? 20 Explosives and get Enhanced Performance, or take shrapnel and APT and be a hybrid bunker.
More elixirs? HGH and 409 are always nice, so is Backpack regenerator .. not to mention the extra boon duration and vita.
More utility? Static Discharge, Speedy Kits, Kit Refinement, Toolkit Trait, what have you, 20 Tools also adds crit dmg (nice for a build that crits a lot) and Toolbelt recharge.

To be frank, the trait allocation for a full FT build is very well thought out and placed, one of the best allocations we have next to HGH, imo.

I disapprove of your suggestions.

our kit swapping is already inherently better than weapon swapping because it is instant. we carry up to 4 weapons without inventory space. this costs us in terms of a utility slot, and is (marginally, I agree) compensated by the tool belt.

we are in no way suffering from lack of options during combat.

That assumes all kit skills are on par with weapon skills which is very obviously not the case.

Maybe that’s because the designer’s intent was to center our class around versatility and not efficiency.

The two are not mutually exclusive, in fact I would say almost dependent on one another. If you are versatile, you are efficient in the way you engage combat.

I agree whole heartedly that efficiency and versatility go hand in hand. I know that “rl” comparisons tend to lack, but think of it this way:

engineers are given the skills to use, well, anything, and then specialize (civic, electronic, etc etc). if an rl engineer tried to use every tool for every job, they would miss deadlines, create less than excellent products, or inadvertently leave half a new subdivision without internet (the horror!). and yet, they remain versatile enough to do anything put before them.

the engineer who is efficient is knowledgeable enough to bring the tools needed rather than the whole tool box.

likewise, in game, the efficiently played engineer take only the tool he needs to do what he plans to. look at maskaganda’s builds. super minimal, super efficient, super effective.

multikit builds work the same way. each kit has skills, some which work in unison, some which do not. to use multikits efficiently, you take the kits that work together. the more kits, the more difficult this becomes to manage.

this is intended.

kr does not “make swapping viable” it adds an effect on swap. it refines the process.

kit swapping is perfectly viable and effective as it is, if you plan your game accordingly.

our kit swapping is already inherently better than weapon swapping because it is instant. we carry up to 4 weapons without inventory space. this costs us in terms of a utility slot, and is (marginally, I agree) compensated by the tool belt.

we are in no way suffering from lack of options during combat.

it seems to me that the benefit to multi kit builds (which still exist and never stopped existing) is that you have immediate access to up to 24 skills. No other class can do this.

Kit Refinement seems to refine what you get out of one or two kits by compensating for the loss of the extra skills from multiple kits.

If you choose to make a build without some skill you seem to think is essential, like cond removal, or whatever, that is a choice you made while building your engi, not a deficiency in the class.

that’s the other part i am working on. FT without crit just seems wrong, but, i can’t deny you have (on paper for me, since i haven’t tested it yet) a decent build.

the concern is that while you may be a tanky little blighter, your dps is going to be hindered by lack of crit if the FT is your main kit.

frankly, i dont often need to.

2520 armor, 25k hp, i more often than not make people explode with ft 2, rocket, rocket overcharge, incendiary ammo, and rifle 1 mixed in with 4 nets on rotation before they even get me to 50% to proc my 6pc forge rune.

but, typically, if i need to heal bad enough to use medkit 1-3, i will already have just dropped a supply crate and am running around anyway gathering bandages.

the time it takes to drop a bottle every 18 seconds is negligible.

TBH, the “necessity” of stun breakers is chalk full of hyperbole.

There are many builds that are successful without numerous stun breakers, or any at all.

Using medkit mid combat is easy ….

For me, I press Q (swap to medkit). Pretty simple.
