Alright, thanks.
What I love about the whole no-tapping, everyone gets rewarded system is I can kinda go out and hang ‘near’ people and do what they are doing without being too much in their way or having to necessarily even group with them. The design almost negates the need for a group, per se, other than if you wanted to have a chat with a set of more than two people, but even that could be accomplished with allowing us to create chat channels (maybe it does, never needed to make one).
So I just loiter around the country, farming for crafting materials, that is my main mission in life. I know I was thrown out into the world and need to save it and all (after having partially fulfilled my regret over having not joined the circus, of course!), but there’s much crafting to be done along the way. Some heroes monologue; I craft. I love coming across DEs to participate in with other people tagging along, or finding someone fighting things in an area I’m also fighting things in the hope that it’ll go quicker with two of us.
Rarely I’ll get a ‘vibe’ like they don’t want me following them around, but it’s not often. I don’t stalk, but if you come into a 1000ft area and start fighting things I was also fighting, yeah, I’ll follow you around. And I’m ‘very’ respectful of ‘how’ you are fighting if I join you. If you are doing one mob at a time, I don’t do area hogs, I’ll work on what you are working on, to make sure you’re getting everything tapped for loot.
And rezzing people is probably my favorite activity, especially in combat when I’m toying with my own death. That’s a blast.
For the art department, I wouldn’t mind seeing a version of Velvet Hose called Velvet Skirt. The name change implying what needs to be dropped from that particular version. Everything else about it is great. The skirt is a nice fullness and length. I like the separation in the pattern for coloring. I just don’t like the ‘hose’ part.
I found variety from karma vendors.
This is probably what I’m going to have to do when I roll my Ranger and Thief, though I’m not looking forward to it. From what I’ve seen so far from crafting, while Leatherworking will still be fun to keep up with to make yourself armor for stats, it sounds like I’ll need to buy a lot of Transmutation stones to keep looking the way I want.
I have to do the same with Tailoring, but there was a while there, twice I think, where I was able to suck it up and where what they gave me.
notebene; The idea isn’t to change the FOV to another set specific but to give those users that want it a fov slider that can set the fov to what fits them best
Also higher FOV means more to render and that can result in lower FPS, some gamers wont care to change it, some might not need to but like it better with higher and for those that suffer from nausea the can make it so the don’t get it or at least minimize it
Well that sounds reasonable. Just like sound or gamma or anything else. Ok now I’m really caught up. Seems like a good and reasonable idea.
It seems like every day I at least get some updating in the patcher (I’m guessing, the way it loads), and then maybe updates to 8 files. Some days, like today, it seemed like maybe there were 24-32 files that it kinda ‘hung back’ on and updated, more quicker than others, before it settled on the final 8.
I was just curious as to what was being updated every day? Presumably nothing that warrants patch notes, as I don’t see any, but it sure makes me curious.
And as much as I keep seeing ‘kittens’ out here on the forum, such proximity to curiosity could lead to most unfortunate and untimely events.
@Patches: Ok, that makes sense. I’ve never had a problem with it before. Though I went from a 20" or smaller desktop monitor 3-4 years back to varying between playing my PC games on a 46"-52" TV. So maybe I ‘missed’ the problem where the monitors got bigger, but we’re still sitting at your desk too close to them.
I might argue that this is an environment problem that should be solved by the user, no?
I watched those two videos, and they are really interesting, but what I don’t see is how you would solve the problem for one set of people without taking away something from another set of people? I’m currently on my 46" TV. I’m maybe 5-6 ft away? If they were to change the game as those videos demonstrate, with ‘fake’ fuzzy peripherals on the screen so that person sitting 2’ from their 30" screen will feel better, won’t my game now look weird to me, as those fake fuzzy peripherals are now in ‘my’ field of view?
But at least I’m getting a better understanding of what the problem is. And it makes sense that this is becoming more and more of an issue as people are getting bigger and bigger monitors and putting them on their desks, but not adjusting how close they are sitting to these monitors.
Ok, all caught up, thanks everyone, carry on. I got me my edumucashun!
Field of view has nothing to do with distance of the camera. Basicly it is the strength of perspective.
Ok, and I thank the other poster too, all great definitions.
What I’m trying to wrap my head around is why is this a new topic? Either GW2 did something drastically different from it’s predecessors in the genre, or this is a new feature that is starting to show up in games and ya’ll are asking for it here? Is that right?
I’m trying to understand where it’s coming from. In the past 2 years, I’ve tried out Rift, SWTOR, TERA, TSW and now GW2. I’ve played many before that as well, in the genre, and this is the first time I’ve seen it talked about so specifically and with such conviction that it makes me think they either did something really different (which I don’t see, and I’d love to see it, maybe juxtaposed screenshots with some arrows or ‘something’ that is pointing out what is different), or I’m wondering if this is a ‘new’ feature that is of hot topic in gaming across all genres, and I’m just now seeing it show up as a point of ‘please add this’?
If it’s a “this is the next new thing, please add it”, then I’ll understand where everyone is coming from when I read these, it gives me some perspective.
If it’s something that they did totally different and it’s causing people to be sick, compared to Rift or any of the other games in the last 2 years, or the 12 years before in this genre, then I’m ‘really’ perplexed because I’m not seeing it.
Not that I have any right to any information, but this is the first time I’ve seen it talked about so much in a game (at least, the kind of games I like to play, which are mostly MMOs these days), and I was curious as to whether this is about something that is drastically different compared to other games in the same genre, or is this more of a thing like ‘physics’, where you were exposed to it somewhere else, perhaps outside the genre, and are hoping it’s included here?
I like to play rather close to my character. Usually where they like to put the camera behind you is pretty much where I like it. Some games I move it in a bit more. Rarely do I move it out. I like it when my character is mostly there in the screen, I don’t particularly like to play like I’m moving one piece around in an RTS.
I’ve never gotten sick, playing that close, but I suppose some people might.
So that I’m on the same page as everyone talking about this (in many threads and sites), is this something that has ‘always’ been a problem in MMOs and people are being more vocal about it now? Is it a new gaming feature people want included? Is it a situation where they implemented FoV drastically different than other games in the same genre? If so, which other games in the genre seem to have it right (I still have some active subs and lifetimes, I can go look at those for comparison)?
I’m just curious, thanks.
I find you can still do it, just move your farming around a little. There was a pattern I ran for probably 4 levels (I don’t heart much any more, not because I don’t want to, just because I keep getting behind in crafting and when I get caught up, I have to feverishly work on the next level. I’m going to be 80 and have to go back and start working on the last zone I was in the middle of, which was a 40-50 zone – I’m 57 now, and not even close to being caught up to make my 60 greens, just started with linen!) in Lorne’s Pass (sp?) in the south of the zone. I’d play with the Jorun (Jotun, Josun, sp?) fellows in the area where you are helping the Norn hunters and squishing worm mounds and killing those Jorun. The Jorun were great Bone and Totem. The worms were good Venom Sac, and I believe the occasional fang. There were trees and mines around (I’m also an Artifice).
After that, I’d go terrorize some bears for Fangs and Claws (mostly the latter) to the West of that area, as well as lots of Minotaurs (a bit north of the bears) for Blood, and more trees and ore.
Then further west to the lake shore (and also a bit south) there were fireflys for Venom sacs, and Bandits for cloth and the surprise sacs of whatever, which yielded all sorts of everything.
I maybe spent 20-30 minutes at each place? It can get a little grindy, which is unfortunate for a game that really isn’t grindy at all with all the DEs and Hearts and all that, but if you are someone like me that loves to keep their crafting up with their level and “live off the land” as their character progresses, this game certainly makes it a bit more difficult (and I put that totally on me, it’s grindy because of how I want to play, that’s not their fault).
And after saying ‘all’ of that, I started to realize it was a lot cheaper and time consuming to go about half-n-half. Farm half of what I needed, and with the extra silver I was making from drops, I could buy about half the other materials I needed from the TP to catch up. Of course, that left me with 6s at 50th level. I’m 57 now, have 1g 5s to my name, I know I need 2g at 60, and I’m not much better than 230 in my Tailoring, just ‘barely’ started leveling making linen cloth. At this point, I’ve fallen behind big time. And I think the last time I did a Heart was maybe 51st level? I still do DEs, because there are usually a lot of people around for those and they are a lot of fun and I can’t help myself, especially if it’s a tough one and people need some ‘support’ (I won’t use the ‘H’ word). :p
So, what were we talking about? Oh yeah, find about 2-3 different areas of things that are different and move around between them. If they drop things you don’t need but you know they are those ‘premium’ crafting pieces, TP them and use the cash to help supplement your farming.
yes it should, if it didn’t then they’d have to remove exp
You know, as fast as I make experience, I was going to come out and suggest an “experience to cash” exchange. I’d gladly use my experience for gold as fast as I seem to get experience.
I find it difficult. I’m 50, ‘just’ started playing in a 40-50 area, where my next personal story quest is (42nd level). I managed to get my crafting up to make myself ‘greens’ at 50 (full set of Tailoring items and Artifice items), but that took me about 6 levels (combined experience from crafting and farming mobs), starting around late 43, just getting to make myself my 45th level blues right around 45, and then my greens came in at 49 with a few bubbles of experience to spare.
During that time, I just farmed for materials. At the end, I ended up deciding not to go out and farm the 32 blood, 16 claws, 16 venom and 16 other items I needed to make everything. I bought much of it on the TP, which took me from about 1g.32s down to 75s (and then I went down to 7 silver making myself 12 space bags, that was all one me).
So it does seem ‘rough’ compared to some other games I’ve played (WoW and Rift come to mind), but maybe easier than something like TERA, which I completely gave up on (and then the game ultimately, as it just wasn’t for me, but I’m sure fine for a lot of folks).
Now, taking a step back, and realizing that this game has no subscription, but a gem shop, and gems can buy you gold among other things, if you are used to playing a subscription model and have no problem with giving them $15 a month for your time, that would give you 1200 gems per month, and could net you a decent enough penny, if you spent it all on money, to keep up with your crafting, and then once you maxed your crafting, back off a little?
A lot of ways to look at it.
Ultimately, I’m a bit bummed about how much experience you get from crafting. At the same time, because of de-leveling, it doesn’t really matter what my level is, I’m ‘behind’ (so to speak) in zone difficulty, so my gear is always actually ahead.
My biggest problem is I’m now 50, managed to get up to 25s, but know I need 2g for 60, and am probably going to have to spend a pretty penny on the TP (or go mad farming, or a little of both) if I expect to keep my crafting up for these next 10 levels or let it slip.
The good news is, I’ve allotted myself (for now, I may increase it) 800 points per month ($10). I have 100 left from my initial spending spree (I made two $10 purchases in beta to help test the system on two occasions), and get to buy 800 more in two weeks. I’m sure I’ll be broke by then. I may just have to slow my playing down.
Oh, and don’t get me started on transmutation stones. I got some for a few zone completions, but don’t see them much any more. I bought 25 (gems), and am now down to like 7. I have to burn 7 every level to keep the look of a few pieces I like the look of, and I change my armor every 5 levels. I think I’m going to skip the blue level and just wait until the next green set (presumably 60) comes up before I change.
For someone that ‘really’ likes to make the very best thing they can make themselves as soon as they are available, it’s a bit of a tough road in this game, but doable.
I wish I had this problem. I’m letting my personal story dictate what zones I go to, and I’m 47 and just finished Lornar Pass, though I’m still there for crafting materials.
It must be something specific to people who like to craft as they go, and try to keep themselves in the latest self-crafted armor (not because it’s superior, I have no idea really, just because I enjoy making a character that makes her own things).
I was actually excited when I saw posts saying that monster xp was really low and it was hard to level that way. Well, sadly that pours in quicker than expected too. At least it comes quicker than the items I need dropped, and at close to a silver a pop in the TP per item needing 3 and sometimes 8 a piece to make things, and only 1 gold (and desperately trying to hang on to that because I know I’ll need 2g at 60, which at the rate everything gives you experience isn’t all that far from 47), I just can’t afford it.
So I really wish I had your problem.
I also did quite a few DEs in the earlier levels. Far more than I do now. I try to hit my daily allowance and then mostly avoid them, unless I happen by one and only see a few people doing it, I figure that might get kinda tough so I help out. Or if someone shouts for help and I’m ‘relatively’ close (I’ll give you roughly 1/3 of a zone…and yes, I’m too cheap to use waypoints, I run everywhere. Another reason why I’m continuing to farm in Lornar Pass where I’m at, it’s not a bad run (well, first swim) to get through Bloodtide Coast and then into Lion’s Arch.
So keep your eyes peeled for DEs, and maybe try some crafting if you haven’t. Tailoring and Artifice are pretty tough to keep up, but I see a ‘lot’ of people cooking. There must be some fantastic synergy with experience or something about that which is crazy awesome.
I still do it. I like seeing the splashes and green numbers around everyone. I do drop Ice Bombs often and roll out my fire sigil (sp?) when it’s up. I love keeping my eye on the screen for people that need rezzing and jump on that. Sometimes I’ll flip into Fire if it’s easy peasy, or start in fire.
Plus, at 15 water (I think it’s 15), there’s a heal that happens as you change ‘into’ water, so it really does nudge you with the idea of changing our attunement during combat.
Regardless of whether I do a fight switching it up or straight on water, or how much I rez or drop ice bombs or use my condition sigil, I usually seem to get Golds if there aren’t ‘that’ many people around. Silvers in really big zergs. And that’s ok. If I throw in all the bronze ones I get when I’m just standing around fighting mobs for crafting drops and not interested in the DE, it all evens out. I don’t pay too much attention to it.
..and now it’s back to English.
For some reason, the name of the Dev Tracker and description is in Spanish on the main forum page. It was fine earlier. Everything else is in English.
I play one, it’s certainly not easy, but it’s not horrible if you use your CC as others have suggested and keep moving. Even a medium sized circle-strafe-almost-kiting as you fight can help keep things away. I mostly play water with a staff, though have been playing with fire a bit lately.
I’m also getting better and starting fire, moving to water into the fight, and sometimes cycling them again if it’s a longer fight. There’s a skill we have that can put a nice DOT on them, which is especially good if running in a state where you don’t have a DOT (like water). It has a passive with it, I’m not in the game, don’t remember it. Gold coin with some red trim? There’s a gold coin with blue trim that is active/passive that has a chill that I like to use with water. If I need a little extra time to drop my bigger (button 4) CC move down on a single target, I’ll use the active on that. Then I can usually get a few Ice Bombs off on them before I have to start running.
And don’t forget to dodge, even when circle strafing to not only avoid their moves, but increase your distance a bit. I happen to like to go counter clockwise, so ‘double-d’ is my friend.
