Well, if they give more money in addition to PvP-centric stuff I’d be bummed. I’m always looking for more money.

With respect to any of the daily/monthly achievements, I agree with the OP with respect to the part where they should really be designed such that you have a box of toys to pick from, and you choose 5.

Well ok then,

everyone I have spoken to in game or outside of the game has either a) despised underwater combat or b) feels more or less indifferent about it because they avoid it as much as possible.

Nowhere to date have I read anything from anyone who actually enjoys Underwater Combat in any situation.

This is obviously just my personal experience but I consider it fairly representative of the general perception about Underwater Combat in GW2.

Well that was a lot better, though the 2nd paragraph isn’t true, because you just read someone (me) who enjoys it. :p

But yeah, I know a lot of people don’t like it. That much is a fact. I have no idea what the numbers are, but regardless, if they do make a change, I hope it’s as inclusive as possible (people that didn’t like it feel it’s at least better, and those that enjoy it don’t feel like it was changed to drastically).

I think there are some things, like mob density and agro range, that would help out a lot without having to change the mechanics. Might some complain that it was made ‘easy’? Probably. Would that bother me too much? Not really. Never been much of a starbelly sneetch.

Oh…and while I can’t remember what some of these tridents were called before I mutated their pictures on subsequent tridents (@OP), here’s what the item icon looks like, if that helps.

No one has his problem?

Everyone has this problem.

Underwater Combat is just terrible or boring for pretty much any profession.

This has been known for ages and nothing has been done about it.

That is an opinion. Even if it’s [unsubstantiated hyperbolic number]% of the people, it’s still an opinion.

Which is fine, opinions help shape lots of things. Not a knock against opinions. I just have a problem with the absolute “Everyone has this problem”. Everyone does not have this problem. You might have this problem. You may have read a thread that had pages and pages of people complaining about it. The same people over and over, sometimes yes, sometimes no. Some dissenting opinion. It might have seemed like everyone had collectively decided it was terrible, and changed the minds of the dissenters.

But remember, there are also [unsubstantiated hyperbolic number]% of people who are happily playing the game and rarely if ever visit the forums (outside of maybe ‘technical support’ or ‘players helping players’).

…a Trident is ranged?… i have never tried one basically coz the very thought of a humungous fork being ranged never occured to me…

There are some nicer skins out there. I banked and use a few of my favorites. Yes, some are giant forks, but some are kinda nice.

There’s one that has a round circle with, I think, I green light or gem in the middle? Maybe 3-4 small prongs sticking out of the circle? That’s probably my favorite one.

I ran out of fine transmutation stones and I’m too cheap to spend real money or my hard earned gold on more stones, so what little I get I save for my armor, which is a whole other pet peeve. Not that I don’t buy gems. I buy $10/mo (my self-imposed ‘charge’ date is the 20th…5 more days!), but besides needing bag space, I’m trying to save for the occasional clothes and items that come by (I mean, I couldn’t very well play without a flying broom and being able to match the smaller Witch boots with the existing town clothes).

Let me find a picture of the trident of which I speak…ah here!

No one has his problem?

I don’t, but I haven’t tried a character that has this drastic of a difference between how it plays in and out of water.

My main is an Elementalist that prefers the Staff. I end up circle kiting when I’m alone if I can’t stand in front of something. This doesn’t really change for me under water. I often times feel like I’m more powerful under water. Not sure if that reflects on my above or below water capabilities.

My 2nd is a Ranger. Only 40, and while not anywhere as experienced as my Elementalist under water, it plays mostly the same. I’m at range. Chewy pirahna, not too different than using my bow (though I see there are some changes which I haven’t tried yet).

Fighting under water actually works pretty well for me. It’s definitely different fighting, you have to learn how to fight best under water just as you did on land. It differs quite a bit from how it might work in other games, where you effectively just do what you do on land, only you are under water. That seems a bit boring. I like their implementation.

That doesn’t mean I’m not sympathetic with those who have issues with it, or perhaps I haven’t experienced a class that has such a drastic change yet? I don’t know what the ‘fix’ would be, though. There are some of us who enjoy how it works and some that don’t. How do you change that to help out the people struggling with it without alienating (and I’m pretty flexible, as long as you don’t move my camera – grrr!) those that more or less like it?

I hope they figure that out when they decide to make a change. For both of our sake.

Hi. Why is there a need for
-useOldFov
when we can just remove
-testVerticalFov
from the shortcut as stated on this page:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/info/news/FOV-Field-of-View-Changes-Beta-Test
?
Thanks.

Vertical FOV is the default now. You’d use the -UseOldFov now if you wanted the old FOV back due to performance issues.

Or we just don’t like it, for whatever reason.

-testVerticalFov
from the shortcut as stated on this page:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/info/news/FOV-Field-of-View-Changes-Beta-Test
?
Thanks.

Here’s what changed (and I noticed this immediately):

Before Patch
Pre-Patch FoV: gw2.exe
Beta FoV: gw2.exe -testVerticalFoV

After Patch
New FoV: gw2.exe
Return to Pre-Patch FoV: gw2.exe -useOldFoV

They changed the default to the ‘new’ FoV, which was in test before. So now, you don’t need the -testVerticalFoV to experience the new FoV changes. Having it there does nothing.

However, for those of us who either don’t like the new FoV (or in my case, don’t really ‘care’ one way or the other about the FoV changes, but have lost ‘more’ of the ability to make ‘small’ camera zoom movements, which were lacking to begin with, having only 6 positions, and those positions just got stretched out with the new changes), ‘must’ put the -useOldFoV switch on the end to put it back to the way it was.

Which works brilliantly, and I appreciate the few CMs who came out as quickly as they did to tell us the work around. And of course, the developer who took the time to post ‘why’ they decided to make the change, and hopefully he walked away with some of the other issues that are affected by that change.

Crossing my fingers that it stays and/or we get much smaller incremental camera moves (as well as someone else’s desire to see the ability to raise and lower the camera, that would also be great, but I’d honestly just be happy with more finely tuned zooming).

I’m confused, did anything pertaining to FOV change with this latest update? I’m currently using the FOV beta. Has the beta become final now? Can I delete my altered shortcut and play with the original now?

I believe this is true, that the default is now what the test switch (from the sticky in tech support) was providing.

For those of us who don’t like the change, whether overall or in conjunction with not having enough fine tuned character zooming options, we can add “-useOldFoV” as our switch.

And cross our fingers that if they ever get rid of it, it coincides with (or comes after) implementing far more finely tuned camera zooming controls and options.

Forgot to come update this one. Turns out we can use -useOldFoV to force it back to the old way, which works perfect.

Hopefully they either never remove that, or give us far less movement per mouse wheel roll when zooming (smaller camera movements), and far more positions than only 6.

If any of you have TSW, roll your mouse wheel one click and see how little the camera moves. Allows you to really fine tune the distance.

Sadly, that all doesn’t mean too much to me. All I really care about when playing a third person game is being able to have as much control as possible of how close or far the camera is from my character. In your game, there are only 6 click positions back from as far as you can zoom in. All the way in is too close (on the shortest human) for most anything, but useful for some screenshot portraits. The first notch back was fine, though I had suggested many times to wanting more “fine” clicks so each zoom was just a little.

Instead, your change to help the FoV issues (which I understood some people had an issue with, but it never affected me playing about 5 ft from a 46" tv), without adding and more zoom clicks, or fine tuned, smaller zooms, left us with the first click back being just too far.

So I “dearly” hope you never remove the “-useOldFoV” setting, without addressing the need for:

1. Smaller movements in zoom “clicks” of the mouse wheel.
2. As a consequence to 1, far more positions than 6, to ensure the furthest distance everyone wants is covered, and those of us who want to manage finely exactly how close the camera is, can.

Personally, I’d like to see one more click between fully zoomed in and the first zoom out, but ideally I’d like as fine of control as you’d see in something like TSW.

Yes, the loss of smaller increments when zooming in and out with the mouse wheel is one of the larger things I dislike about the change. As you described in the first post, zooming all the way in and then pulling back one notch is just too drastic of a jump for my tastes.

Did you try that -useOldFoV switch? It changes it back.

I tried hard to like the new FoV when it was being beta tested the past few weeks and just couldn’t. Glad we can still switch back; hope it remains supported.

Well that’s 2 of us. I was freaking out because I thought I was the only person. How could that be? 1 person out of all these people that noticed it?

I posted the switch in LA if anyone was interested (Emhry Bay). After I explained what that was for, the few people that talked about it didn’t seem interested.

At any rate, if this was all about zooming, I don’t understand why we just didn’t get a few more ‘notches’ in the zooms? Even at the old setting, I’d honestly still like a setting ‘between’ totally zoomed in and one notch back. Or lots of finer clicks.

There are lots of examples in other games. TSW stands out in my mind. Each click is a very ‘small’ movement, so you can really fine tune where you want that camera. Here, there are only 6 notches out from totally zoomed in. That’s it. Each one takes you out a hefty chunk.

Oh well, I digress. Beggars and choosers and all that. I’m ‘really’ happy to get such a quick solution to the problem!

Patch Feedback [merged]

notebene.3190

It’s completely hosed, because they changed how it was zooming before.

The answer to zoom out far should be to add more zoom settings.

What they did is something like this. Let’s say there were 10 zoom levels before and that took you out 100m. So each ‘tick’ was 10m. The solution ‘seems’ to be to have now made it like 150m, but instead of adding 5 new zoom levels at the end, they kept the 10, and each ‘tick’ of the mouse wheel is 15m instead of 10m (pseudo).

So what I’m left with now is that first tick away from my character from the totally zoomed in as far as you can state is just too far away from the character. I don’t like it at all, and I’m honestly completely frustrated how they did this.

To me, the game is completely unenjoyable to play.

The could have done one of three things:

1. Add 5 new zoom levels to the end, keeping each ‘tick’ of the mouse wheel as it was before.
2. Give us a ‘-noFoV’ switch or something.
3. Better yet, make it a UI setting, make that setting the ‘default’, since that is what everyone was used to for the past 2 months, then put something in the patch notes that refers people to the new FoV setting and how to change it.

What would have been wrong with that?

Now what I have is a completely unenjoyable experience.

Thank you folks.

They should really add an option for different FoV.

I set it back, and am (was) very happy with the way it was originally (though, I have complained before that we needed ‘more’ notches between each camera position zooming in and out, but I digress).

Now, I tried that beta thingy for the people complaining about FoV, and I didn’t like it mostly because of the zoom in and zoom out settings, which I didn’t care much for before, but it was livable.

Now it’s working like I have the enabled. Is there a way to set it back?

It used to be when I was zoomed all the way in, it’s where it is now. When I’d zoom out one click (shortest human), I’d be just under my feet, roughly. Now It’s a bit further.

Why do people fear 'power creep'?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: notebene.3190

notebene.3190

1. I don’t ‘Fear’ mechanics.

2. Power creep is the only solution for you. It is not the only solution for me.

As it stands now, I can craft myself Exotics, we’ll call that 9. A Legendary is 10. Now it seems what they want to do is make Legendary 15 (as an example), and put some things at 10-14 in between 9 and the Legendary. The only way to get those things (as far as we know now) is Super Cool Awesome Dungeon (flex; tweet pictures of rug burns).

Now, I have a question for you.

Would you care if after they shuffled all that around, I could craft myself a 14? Or should the only way to get 10-14 be through Super Cool Fun New Dungeon Gated Raid 6000 (now with Retsin!)?

And to me, that is where this whole thing goes. It goes to this place where really what we’re talking about is this little play ’Mer’ca, were we measure ourselves against others because I have a Ferrari, and you are poor, so I win, no new taxes, Romney ’12!

And yes…I like to play games like this to get away from that. To think we’re maybe better than that, or could be better than that.

This stuff just reminds me that we’re really not better than that.

So how about we just give in and let the bees have a shot at it?

Thoughts on Ascended Gear? [Merged threads]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: notebene.3190

notebene.3190

My problem isn’t the treadmill, per se. My problem is going to be the gap created between the Exotics (the best I’ll ever get, unless they let me ‘craft’ newer items) and the top end gear, which will ‘still’ be Legendaries, which I notice Chip McGenius didn’t mention in his Bobby McFarrin post in announcements. Yes, Legendaries will still be the end, but I read they are then ‘pushing’ Legendary stats furtther out. Which widens the gap between the best I’ll ever be able to do and the best.

As it stands now, most everyone just has Exotics. And yes, I get the argument about how the ‘little’ stat change won’t make you ‘better’ in WvW (as an example), and I agree.

However, if you are horrible at it, like I am, but still manage to have some level of fun because of the more even playing field, this ‘will’ truly make you end up being worse, as the gap between me (the horrible, the bad) and Jonny Rugburn (l33tz0rz eSport p3w p3w) will be ‘that’ much more. Before the introduction of this, it would at least be closer.

And yes, I’ll still be in Exotic because I’m not going to go to Chaz McL33tz Dungeon C00lC00l land to farm drops. I don’t like dungeons.

Now, what would be fine is if we had a crafting alternative to always nudge ourselves up to the Legendary with the same gap we had before. If that is possible, then I have no problem. But that would mean that we could craft things you could get in Timmy Leetdungeon, and that would make the dungeon people cry, and I don’t get it? If you have ‘your’ way to get something, and I have ‘my’ way to get something, what do you care? Clearly the awesome new dungeon is the best and fun way to get it, right?

But the argument is, “if you can craft it then no one will go to the dungeon to get it”.

If that is true, what does that tell you about:

1. The dungeon experience (in any game).
2. The human condition.

Maybe a great number of us don’t want to be pawns in your little ’Mer’ca, Gordon Gecko-ized, Alex P. Keaton-esque (yeah…look it up…it’s obscure :p) Call of Doody, NASCAR, CMA, Values virtualized greed simulator.

I’ve got 3-4 myself. 2 already in, 2 more possibly on the way (crossing my fingers).

The only tip I have is by the time Thursday or Friday morning (MST/PST) rolls around, it seems like the weekly WvW matches are mostly decided, so there isn’t a lot of activity, and that’s a good time to go. I’m trying now, no such luck. I was thinking of logging into WvW and yelling ‘FIRE’ really loud, but I doubt that’ll fool anyone.

However, with the event happening this weekend, it might not pan out that way, and I fear I’m going to end up on Kaenig (sp?) just so I can be with friends and family, and I’m not terribly excited about the prospect. WvW is one of my favorite things to do any more, as there isn’t much to do in PvE (and no, adding gear grinding/gating isn’t an answer, but there are lots of other ways they can solve that).

If that happens, with my luck next Tuesday they’ll announce the introduction of paid transfers, and they’ll stick me for money to move everyone back once the dust settles.

As I read the news about the patch, I became really excited, because a minor gear progression will be available – an incentive to do dungeons.

I guess my question to you is the same question I have asked for years in other forms, most notably, when someone poses the idea to have more forced group content to encourage people to play in parties.

If it’s so fun, doing dungeons, why do you need an incentive? Don’t you just do it because it’s a fun thing to do? Like joining a party and having your play dictated to you by whoever emerges as the alpha dog? That’s just fun, right?

Why does it have to be about Starbelly Sneetches? Why do so many equate how well they did, or how much fun they had, based on what someone else doesn’t have? Reminds me of Carlin’s old ‘stuff’ routine.

I went to where this was supposed to be a few hours ago on my server (SoS), and I didn’t see anyone around? I’ve never tried it before, figured I’d go see what all the fuss was about. Where is it supposed to be?

Why no weapons at character select?

I have always wondered why they don’t show the weapon you have equipped in the select screen. Is there a reason why?

I’m actually kinda glad there aren’t. Also glad they sync’d up the hide shoulders/helmet.

So as with all things regarding any cosmetic related concerns, be it armor or showing weapons at a login screen, I hope the solution takes the form of giving everyone choices and options.

That’s another good one, and NPCs too.

How to get to level 20 fast?

Well, my first inclination was to post an obscure quote from Meatballs, and say, “Is that what they teach you in that school of yours? 20!?”, but they have ‘no’ sense of humor, and I’d be given an infraction, like when I made a (harmless?) comment about expecting to see something regarding elderberries in a thread titled “French people are being mean to me!” (or something like that), which of course was a Monty Python reference, and at the same time, apparently an act of forum terrorism.

So I ‘clearly’ won’t start by saying that.

But what I will echo is Wasselin. ‘Everything’ gives you experience. It was frustrating to me at first, since I’m a ‘big’ crafter. When I hit 14, I decided to make myself some level 15 gear. When I was done farming all the materials I needed and crafted it all, I was 20. So I made that armor, and then I was 23, and then I went to Kessex.

DEs are a great source, and ripping through all the starting areas as Darkcool mentioned is also a good idea.

And welcome!

I’m wondering the same but the official FAQ does have some answers but what it doesn’t include is server population vs invited friends ie can we be assured to have friends we invite on the same server we are on?

I had a friend buy and start on Saturday. Couldn’t get on my server (SoS). Sunday? No such luck. Today? I’ve been trying all day, and because of the insane WvW recruiting that has gone on over the past month, my server moved up the ladder and seems to have 24/7 coverage and ‘no one’ will log off

It’s looking like my only choice to play with my friend is to be forced off a server which I like. That hardly seems nice. I didn’t do anything to them.

I invited some more people, and they might come, but this one friend that decided to get it before all this free weekend stuff went down, won’t be able to join me. Or, if their plan is to sneak in the new ‘join’ feature, I mean, that will be a start, I suppose, but it won’t include WvW, right? What will be the limitations of that?

So everyone go log off SoS so I can get my friend moved over.

3. A ‘red’ poster suggested that we not worry about whether or not our friends would be able to get on our server even though it’s full, suggesting that they would magically get to create characters on our server. How does that work?

4. If they get put on our servers, and later buy the game, as the OP suggested, will the characters be there, and on the same server (the server I play on now)?

5. At what point is ‘the server’ decided? I sent my invites out an hour ago. Did it lock them to my server at that point (SoS)? I have another friend who started 2 days ago, and I haven’t been able to get them on in 48 hours (over to my server). If I decide to transfer my own character off SoS over to [Horrible Server], as the game wants to penalize me for playing with my real life friends, will those invites be over on SoS? Is it what ever server I’m on at the beginning of the event?

Or…is this whole “don’t worry” thing because you plan on releasing the “join me” functionality with Lost BlahBlah (forget the name)? Not that this is an answer in the long run, of course, because it doesn’t work with WvW, which seems pretty pointless.
