For what it’s worth, I tried Fullscreen mode (I usually play windows/full) and that didn’t change anything.

At a 20,000 ft level (which would be rather frightening if it actually happened, especially if you just found yourself suspended there, not knowing how it happened or with any means to change your situation), it seems to be an odd question.

Something like this is an incentive to get new people to do something.

When you drive by an apartment complex that has a sign out front that says “Move in special: First Month Utilities Free!”, do you think to yourself, “That’s pretty slick, all those people that already live there get one free month of utilities too!”

I guess I don’t understand why an MMO promotion needs to include free things for people who are already here when it’s just that – a promotion to get people here. You are here, you don’t need a promotion.

Just thinking about this again at 20,000 ft (since I’m apparently stuck there now and can’t move, and it’s rather cold and drafty, and whoever thought to put me there didn’t bother giving me a jacket).

5 Things you like in GW2

I mostly like everything. Hard to put numbers in front of them.

1. Everyone is a Party – This should cover most of the mechanics in the game that don’t require you to be in a party, which is a mechanic that should go away. I suppose it serves a purpose so you can see the dots of other people you want to do things with. A special color for chatting with just a few people, that could be covered by letting us set up custom chat channels. But things like no node tapping, no monster tagging, downed state, rezzing and bulk rezzing, lots of things like that all lead to everyone playing together anyways even though you aren’t in a party. I have never played more with people I don’t know in a game than this one. Dragons, Hearts, DEs, WvW.

2. Graphics. Both the environment and character models. Very nice.

3. I ‘mostly’ like that there is no trinity, which is a mechanic I hate ‘only’ in practice (very sound in principle) because of how it shakes out in a world of people who can be pretty mean to each other. Now, having said that, I don’t like that as a result you can’t be a ‘big’ healer. I wish there was a way to not have the trinity, but still be able to be those roles, which would then just put the trinity back in the hands of the players enforcing it in party make up, which defeats the purpose. Good idea; could use some work.

4. Combat. I like the dodging, that you can move while fighting (and mostly casting). I’m glad they didn’t go FPS Modern Call of Warfaring Doody 34: Wrasslin vs NASCAR Edition, that wouldn’t have been very fun. One of the reasons I like to play MMOs is because they mostly still revolve around combat cycles vs twitch.

5. Downscaling.

Lag or Stuttering when Friends list open?

It started happening with me, literally out of nowhere. I was playing fine, after someone actually explained to me that they were having this issue. What happens an hour later? I open up my friends list, and drop from 60FPS to 5.

When did this start happening to you, and did it ever correct itself? I’m guessing not?

Sadly that didn’t work. I was told I had the most recent version, and I turned off the hardware acceleration per the recommendation and that also didn’t work.

Really odd that it just started happening out of nowhere? I noticed those posts are several months old. I have never had this problem until sometime in the past 2 days.

Put the other memory back, still behaves this way when I open the friends UI. I guess it’s the monitor (TV).

you can always roll back drivers to see if it still happens.

Good point. And sadly that didn’t work. So monitor?

Actually there was one other change I did. I swapped in 16 gig of memory for 12. The 12 was 2000, the 16 is 1600? Guess I ought to drop it down and put the other memory back, see if that has an impact.

If not, that would leave monitor (TV), which seems strange to me. Why would that cause a problem, I wonder?

Well, off to do the memory test.

My FPS doesn’t seem to go down (according to the options dialog), but when I open the Friends list (either the Friends or Followers tabs), everything kinda lags and goes into freeze-frame mode. When I close it, it goes back to normal.

Two changes I made recently. One was updating to the 360.70 (I hope I got that version right) beta nVidia drivers. The second was a monitor change (well, TV change, but that’s my monitor).

Could either one of those be affecting that? Pretty sure it’s not part of the last patch, I must have opened my friends a few times since then. The monitor and driver change happened within the last two days.

Thanks.

Elementalist blues... what am I doing wrong?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: notebene.3190

notebene.3190

I am a staff Elementalist. I have tried the D/D thing, but haven’t gotten very good at it. So I still staff in WvW even, though I’ll do S/F when asked to protect a wall or siege or something (stood on a wall one time with 2 other Elementalists taking turns when our cool downs were up and it was pretty effective).

What I did in PvE leveling up was to use, as my 7-9, passives. Yes, pretty lame, but effective. I still use them. I flip those 3 when I go to WvW for the usual suspects (many listed above) but still find the 3 passives I like (Signet’s of Earth/Water/Fire) to be my best friends. I’ll do a lot of flipping and pull in Earth with Eruption, flip to fire and give them a Flame Burst on the way in, drop a Lava Font when they stop, maybe stay there for another round, or flip to Water if I need some heals (drop a Spike and a Geyser), or in fire use my Burning Retreat.

If I get a few on me, then I circle strafe in fire while I’m not talking damage, double-tapping 2 to get a Lava Font on the ground they keep running through while I circle strafe, and Flame Burst when it’s up. The Water signet passive gives a condition cure every 10s, which is helpful, and again, something that just happens for you that you don’t have to think about while you are working on figuring other things out.

If I’m taking too much heat, I go water, double-tap 4 while moving to slow them down, drop a 2 and more importantly, starting using the Fire Signet’s active, which is a nice little bit of burning on a single target over 9s (and yes, I have lots of condition, for better or worse). The Earth signet gives a nice toughness passive, as well as a 3s stun.

I didn’t WvW until I was 80, so I wasn’t too worried about things like Mist Form, Armor of Earth, Lightning Flash, those types of things, until later. I just go those 3 passives (and Signet of Restoration for my heal, which gives you healing on any spell as the passive, though I favor the glyph these days for the speed buff in air).

So there’s a write up from a ‘horrible’ staff elementalists that has been pointed at and laughed at repeatedly. But I had a good time leveling up, and still enjoy it. My favorite character still (also playing a Ranger and Guardian).

I guess I should have added that it was ‘actually’ soulbound, meaning it won’t let me drag it out of the bank into my own inventory, nor from the bank to a waiting transmutation stone window. I can only destroy it (and it’s been several hours now, so it doesn’t seem like there’s any sort of “character delete soulbound converts to account bound” window.

Maybe the delete character trick works on other things, but not town clothes? Or maybe it just doesn’t work on those starter clothes?

At any rate, seems like it wouldn’t be too hard to sneak them into the store for a penny or two in the event you delete them. Or I read one person’s post where they put them all in the mystic forge to see what would happen.

It is a little obnoxious to open an Unidentified Dye just to receive something you already have.

At least you can sell the extra dye on the Trading Post and make another player’s day…

You can also throw four dyes that you already have into the Mystic Forge and potentially get one that you don’t already have.

I didn’t know that, thanks!

When am I officially inducted into an Order?

I just went through this with my Guardian and the Vigil. You don’t get the medal thingy on the login page until you complete a few quests in (somewhere between picking and when the quests merge into the main story), but as soon as you ‘pick’ your order, you can go there and buy. Although technically, I did the human ‘save the queen’ quest after picking before I went, but I doubt that matters. I bet I could have gone before.

My Guardian still hasn’t moved on in the quest line, and hasn’t earned the medal achievement on the login page, but I’ve bought one item from the vendor.

So you HAVE to use 2 transmute stones?

My guardian used a ‘Fine’ transmutation stone (since those legs are 80) to move the look onto the white armor, keeping the stats of the white armor (and thank god you can transmute things your class couldn’t ordinarily use).

Even though the stones warn ‘soulbound’, they are in fact account bound. Drop it in the bank. Ranger comes in, picks up the white piece that looks like the Vigil legs now. Uses a ‘Basic’ transmutation stone to apply the look to her 60th level legs.

Whoa I thought you could only transmute armor in the same armor class (like heavy to heavy).

So I can have my elementalist dress like a warrior? =O

No, sorry. I think what they meant was that their guardian was the one who had access to the vigil vendor. A guardian could buy light or medium armour for transmutation but couldn’t equip it.

Yeah, what Lexy said.

Sorry about that, I wasn’t clear.

I bought Vigil ‘leather’ legs and applied them to a low level white ‘leather’ legs, but it was done by my Guardian. My big fear was that someone who couldn’t ‘wear’ the leather could not transmute it. Turns out you can. I didn’t mean to imply you could go from one type to another.

I ‘bought’ Vigil leather legs that my Guardian couldn’t use, and was able to transmute them to another pair of pants I couldn’t use, and bank it as ‘account bound’.

GW2 on steam

Can’t you just set it up as a non-steam game? Or is there something more that you need from it being a true steam game?

I did it, just to let my friends know what I was doing, and it gives me the shift-tab overlay to see if anyone is out doing something else. Plus I can choose to launch it from steam or not.

Is that what you need? Or do you want integrated achievements and all that?

Can you transmute a transmute?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: notebene.3190

notebene.3190

So you HAVE to use 2 transmute stones?

If you want to do it the way I did it, yes.

I ran up my third character to the point where she could join the Vigil. I gave her money and she went and bought the Vigil legs. I bought the cheapest medium legs (white) from a standard armor vendor with the lowest level character I could.

And now I have a Whisper top/Vigil leg outfit.

She’ll have to use basics any time she upgrades those two pieces, until she gets to 80, at which point she’ll need to use a Fine for the final application (assuming I still like those pieces when she gets there). And if I step through a set of Yellow first before Exotic, that’d be 4 stones (2 to apply to the yellow; another 2 later when I build my Exotics). So I’ll probably start planning ahead before I get there, and hopefully with my main farming for her, I can get her crafting up to 400 so I can make them before I get there, and be able to jump right into at least those 2 pieces of exotics (which is where I stop).

That path worked for me on the double transmutation. It wasn’t until after I had bought the legs that I realized I’d never tried to transmute something I could use on a character. Thank god that worked. I would have been out 1.8, which isn’t a lot to some people, but a lot to me.

Better loot in a party?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: notebene.3190

notebene.3190

You don’t get better loot from a monster if you’re in a party but the chances that a killed monster gives you XP and/or loot becomes higher when you’re in a party.

If you’re alone it seems you need to damage a monster for about ~5% of its maximum health to get experience and about ~15-25% to get loot.
However if you’re in a party you only have to damage a monster slightly to get XP and/or loot from it as long as your entire party dealt enough damage to it.

So yes, being in a party doesn’t gives you better but at least more loot.

I might debate the increased % to get loot. I’ve barely touched things and have gotten loot off them before. Most probably below 15% (but I couldn’t prove that if I had to).

But if it’s true that the entire party’s contribution effects it, only needing to contribute a smaller number when alone, then that would be a significant reason to group when running around in an area killing monsters to ensure everyone gets as much as they can.

Still not entirely convinced it would mean anything on something big? Unless you weren’t there for the entire event and had run up at the end and wanted to be sure you got something out of it, getting one hit in and having someone invite you quick before it’s over might mean something vs nothing.

Now, whether that makes sense or not is for another topic altogether. I think I’ll stay out of that.

I guess it’s run it’s course and I’ll mark yours as the answer.

Thanks everyone. It gives me more to think about when it’s offered and I hear people talking about it.

Better loot in a party?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: notebene.3190

notebene.3190

Well it IS obvious, it’s just also obviously anecdotal.

It’s just like people saying MF works vs people saying MF doesn’t work.

The truth it is DOES work, it’s just RNG so it might not always work for you, leaving you with a negative opinion towards it.

Well, obvious yes and obvious no.

If you mean by obvious as the other poster stated, that theoretically in a group you would clear things faster, and then have more opportunities, and hopefully over time produce more, then sure.

But the part that isn’t obvious is whether there is truly any sort of ‘party bonus’ to the system. Wherein if you are alone, your chances are x1. If you are in a 2 person party, your chances at x2, if you are in a 3 person party, x3, etc. And also, does the party count as ‘one’ thing with respect to the loot tapping rule. If one person in a party never touches a mob, but some of the other people do, do you get a roll (should it be determined anything would drop for you had you been alone and tapped it to begin with)? I would see that as a possible benefit as well, as it might also impact your gold/silver/bronze status? Thinking out loud.

So take something like Jormag. Everyone runs up saying ‘lfg’. Now, in the beginning, if we’re talking about the ‘obvious’ part of being in a group and clearing more stuff, if you manage to kills lots of those elementals as a group as well as get gold status on those ice crystal things, then maybe there’d be some benefit there based on ‘that’ part which we agree might be obvious.

What isn’t obvious is whether when you then go kill Jormag, and you are in a group, do you have, by rule, a better chance at getting ‘item x’ then me, who is alone? Clearly the obvious rule doesn’t apply at Jormag, because there is only one of him and one chest at the end. The party doesn’t kill many Jormags in the time it takes me to kill one, thereby getting more chances at the RNG?

And by rule, I don’t mean RNG experiences over time and opinion, but rather, is there a ‘group bonus’ rule in effect that improves each members chances of receiving each tier of item the bigger the party is?

Or is the ‘we need to be in a party’ some sort of mythology that grew out of the grouping that goes on in the area for, say, Trolls, which really is about quantity and brute force and chances at the RNG per time spent, and that was somehow translated to ‘well i heard if you are in a group you get better loot’?

I guess that’s what I’m asking.

Now, if ‘group bonus’ rules are confirmed, then making sure everyone is in a group would have an impact on how well you might do at Jormag.

Well if I don’t see any sort of grand claim with data to back it up, I’ll use Rainzar’s answer to mark it completed in a day or two, since that one basically sums it all up (we don’t know, Anet knows, they aren’t saying).

Better loot in a party?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: notebene.3190

notebene.3190

Well there’s this:

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Loot

But it doesn’t indicate two things.

1. Do you somehow negate the 5-10 rule simply by being in a group? Does the group become ‘one’, and ‘anyone’ who meets the loot tapping rule cause everyone in the party to be eligible for loot on that mob?

2. Does being in a group somehow ‘increase’ the likelihood of obtaining ‘better’ items. (i.e., user A has a 0.01% chance at getting a yellow drop within 5 levels of current level, but user B has a 0.2% chance at getting the same yellow because they are in a 3 person group, and user C has a 1% chance at the same yellow because they are in a full group…using completely made up numbers, of course).

I guess all the talk in /m out by the dragon in Frostgorge made me wonder if there was anything substantiated to that effect (or [insert favorite after life residence here] forbid, actual information from them).

Better loot in a party?

I’m starting to see this pop up in map chat, usually around the dragon events, and specifically up in Frostgorge. Now, this could have been going on forever, I only recently started paying attention to and participating in the dragon events myself (even though my main has been 80 for quite some time).

Some people are saying that if you party (and even for farming Trolls, which may be more of a speed thing than anything), that loot quality will be better than if you are by yourself?

Other folks are saying there is no proof of that?

I was wondering if there was a definitive answer on this, or in lieu of a sanctioned answer, compelling evidence one way or the other?

Thanks.

I find it helpful to look up each area on the official wiki, then open the map that comes with each area. Open your map, and move over to the zone in question and zoom in enough so you can see all the ‘white named’ areas, then start comparing. It should just be one white named place you don’t have yet. And you can do all that without having to travel anywhere.

Was there more than bullet points 1 and 2 and I missed a ‘next’ link?

Assuming that was all there was, sure, I suppose a dungeon finder tool would be nice for people that like to do dungeons (I’m not one of them). Yeah, the multi-guild structure probably leads to some loyalty issues (I don’t ever join guilds unless it’s something small for friends and family to take advantage of some additional mechanics not offered without a guild).

Now, I ‘suppose’ you could make an argument that not forcing people in a party so they can hang out together all afternoon and talk in /p is another culprit, but I think that’s kinda crazy.

It’s just people. People have changed. People have gotten more isolated. Some people just don’t type any more, regardless of the power or /m and /s. They put their headsets on and talk. I do that with friends, but don’t very much enjoy doing that with strangers. I enjoy typing. I type fast and I type well. It’s a lost art. I think a lot of the silence is that people just don’t like typing any more (and please don’t call them ‘lazy’, if they don’t want to type, they don’t want to type. Just like I don’t want to join a guild and go to a dungeon).

Then some of it is a turn off. Sometimes what you do get is just nasty people grief-speaking, because that’s about all you can mechanically grief with in this game (since there is no monster tagging and node stealing and things like that). And some people just like to grief. Often times I’ll ask a simple question in /m and be met with a barrage of rudeness, maybe followed by ‘just kidding’, which doesn’t negate what I just had to read.

I don’t think it’s anything specific about this game. Forcing people to group isn’t going to make them social. I think it’s more about where we’re all at right now in the life cycle of all this. My two cents.

I’m not sure where to post this other than general, but not opposed to having it go anywhere.

I did see someone posting about their swords, and didn’t think much about it (yesterday) as I was all up in a bother about jumping.

I’m noticing my Ranger now, when her single handed axe and horn are holstered, it looks weird. I think it looks better when it just clipped your clothes. Now they seem to be floating around out in space off my hips in mid air? I mean, I know two handed weapons do that, but it just looks weird with the single handed weapons.

Just an opinion. Not sure how anyone else feels about it.

Reverted a change to the jump mechanic that impacted the timing of jumps

Where in the original patch notes was there this?

Made a change to the jump mechanic because…

The patch note didn’t say they fixed something that was accidentally messed up by something else, it specifically called out reverting the change.

May I ask what was wrong with jumping that you tried to originally fix?

This is whats bothering me. If the change didn’t make it into patch notes, did QA even know about it?

And then I asked in another thread, and the answer was “well we fixed a problem that was causing jumping not to work”, and the thread was closed. I don’t care that the thread was closed, had an answer been provided. That was circular.

“Who are you?”
“I’m Rita’s boss.”
“And who is Rita?”
“She’s my secretary.”

I’d just like to know what was wrong with jumping that they felt they needed to fix, and then had to revert back, because the fix was off the mark. Am I not asking this correctly? Someone throw me a bone here and help me ask the question.

Edit: Found this over in the game bug thread, maybe this was it.

The fix to prevent people from spam jumping up walls and obstacles might have been the source. Well if that’s the case, that is a good thing to fix, can’t complain about that. Hopefully they find a way to fix that without impacting the rest of us.

Ah, excellent. That’s a good introduction to puzzle jumping in there.

Useless Karma

To my best knowledge there still are some karma vendors, though they’re very sparsely populated though, where you can still purchase scythes, axes, and picks, not sure about slavage kits though.

I know, right? And what was so wrong with having a merchant that sold everything for karma? I see them referenced in older guides, but alas they are gone. The convenient ones that loitered in big cities.

For what it’s worth, I found that if I double-tapped the jump key each time I intended to jump quickly, it always registered a jump. Though I didn’t have a ‘lot’ of testing with it, I only needed to run to my borderland’s jump puzzle after the patch and take the two key halves to the door. Double-jumping at each jump was the only thing that got me there.

Actually the 2nd to the last run was the funniest, as I double-jumped all the way there, and then on the last little floating rock before the last little jump up to run to the door, I got over confident and decided to just do a normal jump and fell. Double-jumped the whole thing on the final run, and that’s how it earned it’s name.

What I found pretty useful for the non-100% map completion was using the official wiki to look up each zone and then click on the picture of the zone. Open your map in game and move over to it. Move it around and look for ‘white named’ places that are in the picture on the wiki that you don’t see on yours.

One that stands out to me that I missed (as nothing ever takes you over there) is ‘Tails of the Serpent’ in Timberline Falls. Look for places like that.

You can see what the effect is by going to lions arch and going to the ramp directly to the left, walking out of the bank. Run at the ramp and jump right as you hit the lip of that ramp going down.

What happens is you are in a “falling” state for a split second so it prevent you from jumping and instead pulls you down.

This is adverse to what the jumping physics previously were because you were able to begin a slight fall for a split second and still input a jump command to gain some extra distance into your jump.

So they either “fixed” the physics or “broke” some jumping puzzles that used to require you to jump certain distances that were REALLY picky on how close to the edge you were when you jumped.

Now add latency into the mix and you can see how being too precise on when the player inputs a jump command can cause issues.

adjusts tin foil hat more snugly

This is pretty interesting, because then it would seem to indicate this might be the result of some stealth nerf they didn’t want to say anything about, no? Maybe they ‘fixed’ the physics as you say to prevent a class from cheating with the physics at something (or maybe related to all those node teleporters), and the result broke our ability to jump?

I can pull off a jump the way I intended every time if I always double-tap the space bar to jump. It’s not much of a work around though, as it really breaks all the hand/eye muscle memory work I put in to get me to a point where I can do borderlands with the step off on the branch trick all the way through without falling.

Now I just walk off stuff if I don’t double jump.

I’m not entirely sure what this thread is about, but I really felt compelled to stop by and comment that your title would make an excellent band name.

Carry on.

Filling my character slots

I can’t speak to the choices, per se, but given the race/class restrictions you present to have, I’d go Sylvari as the Mesmer and use the Charr for the Necro.

I haven’t played all the classes, and while I favor my Ranger and Elementalist, my Guardian seems kinda fun, and pretty survivable with a mace and shield switching to two handed sword when I’m all healed up and need to do some damage quick, then back to my mace and shield. Those are my main three for now, though I have a Mesmer in the wings, and haven’t thought about what I might do with my 5th yet (or if I’ll buy more slots).

Something Wrong, with this. They broke this fixing something. Some DEV was fixing something and caused an nuclear disaster inside this system.

My money is on a direct tie in with the boxing glove fix.
