It’s the chain I beat you with until you
recognize my command!”
I hope not. Didn’t much care for it. I thought the idea was cool, but the actualy event just didn’t do it for me.
Leveling up is a integral part of any RPG, tabletop or otherwise. GW2 is classified as an MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) for a reason. Without having some sort of character progression (i.e. leveling) It’s not by definition, an RPG. Even if the classic idea of leveling were removed from this game, there would be no “starting out at level 80” because level 80 wouldn’t mean anything. But even with the idea of aquiring new traits and abilities as you progress it’s still a form of leveling up. You character is getting better as they proceed through the story, events, dungeons, etc. Which is the whole point of “leveling up” anyway. Also without Leveling, the is no way to measure your progess or strength. All Mobs would be the same difficulty, The bandits in Queensdale would be as tough as Ice Brood colossi in Frostgorge. Having champions, elites, and veterans would be meaningless, because those designations mean they are of a higher level. Gear would become meaningless. What would it matter if you had the exotic “kitten greatsword of awesomeness”? It being exotic means its a higher level than rare or masterwork. It would be the same as the “OK sword of Meh” Stats would have to be the same on both. because there is no levels.
Not having levels, would make this similiar to Second Life, just set in Tyria. It would be boring as all get out.

Wow…just wow.
So instead of finding a new way to play, or a different runset/traits you’re going to be an elitist jerk? Its that attitude that drove me away from zerk to begin with. I think the prevailing attitude about the nerf is positive. Yeah its down from what it is, and we are still adjusting to ALL the changes. Good luck finding a party now that more people are TRYING DIFFERENT THINGS. I can almost guarantee you’ll spend more time looking for your ideal party than it would take to just get over yourself and do the kitten dungeon.Yeah – nah.
You’re the one who’s in the wrong. The smart players have already figured out that zerker is going to be even more enforced from now on and are working towards getting it if they didn’t have it.Other players that are " trying out new builds " might think they’re doing good but in all honesty they’re just trying to find new and inventive ways to get kicked.
As zerker does less damage now so too do other builds. If you want to spend as LITTLE time as possible in those dungeons be prepared to bring zerkers only, since anything else will just result in longer clear times.
Maybe..but not everyone is into speed runs. MANY people run the dungeons because they are fun. I like to occassionally do a complete dungeon clear when I can. It’s fun, which is the point of the game.
Yeah, it does require alot of silk for crafting. I’ve finished a whole ascended armor set, and it took forever because of the silk. But it was at 2 scrapes per bolt BEFORE the introducting of ascended. They increased the amount because silk is too easy to get. It SEEMS difficult because you need so much. On an average day JUST farming silk I could get 25-30 bolts a day.
Increasing the amount of silk need, increased the price dramatically, before silk was super cheap, almost the price of mithril ore now on the TP. Because there was no demand for it. I think the idea was to help use up some of the silk in the game that wasn’t doing anything, help get rid of useless items by salvaging greens and blues for silk, similiar to luck from salvaging.
So question. I’ve recently started the quest for a legendary, and the t6 mats are my biggest concern. It’s been mentioned that going for clovers is a good way to get them, as failure yields t6 mats. Now if I was to go that route, would it be better to go for one at a time? or for 10 at a time? I understand that 10 at a time would yield more T6 mats, but then you would need even more ecto and obsidian shards. Which to me, seems to be counter productive as you need those for other parts of the recipes.

The better idea would have been to stop hating on the most efficient build, and embrace it.
Never!!! Long live the Valkyrie warrior!!!

Agreed. Zerker is overrated….
Was there an ambient creature in the way? I see those kinds of numbers when killing ambient creatures….
Lets have a moment of silence for the zerk……
Ok now thats out of the way. Good riddance. Didn’t much care for the zerker “elitists” mentality that if you didn’t have zerk you were a horrible player and a bad person. Nothing wrong with zerk in and of itself, its just the mentality that bothered me and prompted me to go a different direction with my warrior pre patch.
Nope…why would I? I’ve invested too much time and RL money to stop because of a patch…thats just silly.
I seem to recall reading somewhere that refunds would be by May 11, but for the life of me I can’t recall where I saw it. Anyway, do give it time. It’s been less than 24 hours, and they have millions of players. Relax man
In this thread. The qoute in question:
We will not be able to process any refund requests via Customer Support tickets before May 12th. If you expected to receive dyes and do not receive them by May 12th, feel free to create a Customer Support ticket at that time.
I wonder why they would wait until may 12th to even start processing them.
To work out the bugs of the new patch as they appear, plus they are dealing with the china release and possibly finishing up the new LS…
I noticed the same thing pre patch. I did have a driver update that I think may have had something to do with it. Did you have an update that coincided with the patch?
I don’t understand how this is much of a “nerf” at all. Yes they reduced the amount of money in champ bags. But they turned them into events, which do give money, and karma and EXP. They changed the lower level “champs” into elite or vetern accordingly. The way I see it for FG champ train, they will still be champs, and with larger trains, will be harder to take out. So I little bit of extra time, plus the addition of Karma, Daily/monthy event completion, more EXP, and (I am estimating the same amount of money as pre patch with the addition of the event). This doesn’t seem like much of a “nerf” as a balance…
Maybe its just me though
I agree, PvE isn’t very difficult as it’s designed for groups. Yes you can solo it, and that makes it a bit more difficult, but the point still remains. That being said, how do you evaluate skill? ANYONE can get full ascended equipment and legendaries, and trait for a solo dungeon running build, but that doesn’t necissarily mean they are skilled. Aquiring ALL the skins doesn’t equate skill either, as you pointed out you can buy them, or play long enough to find them all. (And they don’t do anything other than make you look “pretty” anyway, so I never saw the point of them…)
The only real thing in PvE that has anything to do with skill is the Jumping Puzzles and there is a reward for doing those, AP and a chest.
The skill tests are what PvP and WvWvW are for. Unlike PvE mobs who follow a specific attack pattern and movement route, enemies in PvP/WvWvW are unpredictable. It take skill to fight them, rather than set auto attack and dodge every 20 seconds when the boss launches his AoE attack.
I don’t see how you can determine a persons skill level in PvE and be able to reward accordingly. AP as I understood it was supposed to be a measure of someones skill, and there are rewards for that, but so many people did nothing but farm AP so that became usless.
I don’t see WHY someone would feel that they need to be compensated for having done the work to get a 2nd legendary. They still get to keep the skin, any duplicate skins will be converted to something appropiate, if I understand the new wardrobe system at all, AND they get to keep the weapon. And said weapons are now becoming account bound so you can use BOTH of them on multiple toons. I don’t see why it should even be an issue.
^
That actually makes sense
Yeah I know, just started my alt again yesterday and didn’t realize I had a manual. Oh well here’s hoping some thing happens with it. Hate being out 10g, but hey that’s the way it goes sometimes
I don’t know if this has already been brought up but whats going to happen to unused trait manuals? I bought the grandmaster manual BEFORE accountwide wallet for an alt, and haven’t been playing him much at all. As I understand it, starting tomorrow, they wil be rid of the manuals, as well as the repec fee. Whats going to happen to my manual? Will it be deleted? Refunded? or converted into something? Any ideas?
I have a necro alt (lvl 50) and so far I’m loving it. It’s definetly a learning curve over maining a Warrior though. That being said, I have yet to encounter any negative feedback in WvW or PvE, don’t PvP much at all. And while I’m still learning the class, and have a long way to go, I can see them being quite powerful if used correctly. Where the “elitists” are concerned, “zerk/heavy only” pugs, etc. Ignore them. I get the same reaction from Warriors because I refuse to run the current meta build.
You can’t please everyone, so why not continue playing your necro, take the time to learn ALL the ins and outs yourself, and have fun? The people only wanting a specific group type are free to do that, thats part of the LFG system. Don’t join those groups and expect not to get kicked or yelled at. I’ve run several dungeon groups with my necro and never had any problems. I’ve also had several necros in groups with no issues. Taking in, or being a necro, in a group requires a different play style. Improvise, adapt, and overcome.
Oooo. Pretty.
I was not aware of the higher lvl fractals and agony.
Will definetly consider that when I get up to those levels.
Ok swapped dual wielding for great Fortitude, and signet master for vigorous focus for added dodging ability to make up for loss of armor too
Hmmm not bad. The numbers look good, but the 1k drop in hp worries me a bit. As well as the armor. While it may be great in dungeon, solo pve roaming is differnt. But ill take it for a test drive and see what happens.
No no, it was good. You nailed the problem on the head. And offered a solution other than “you suck and your build sucks, go away”
Wait you were in that arah run we did a few days back where we kept getting wiped at the tar elemental for 2 hours? For no reason at all…
(edited by pdavis.8031)
Yes I agree, but im trying get away from the zerk mindset. Which was the whole point of this thread before it got derailed. I thank you for your input and will take it under consideration.
nahh, stick with the one I gave u, u will only have about 3-5 boons on u (5 is stretching it), so that will only be a 3-5% dmg increase, its barely noticeable, with mine, its about a 10-15% dmg increase with only a 1k loss in health and around 100-200 armor, not noticeable at all
Maybe, but its basically zerk traits with valk armor. Which is the opposite direction im trying to go.
That actually makes sense. So as a way to combat that why not get a group who is willing to try a non zerk build and fight the bosses differently. I would be totally down for something like that. It could be fun encourage diversity in a dungeon build, and go nonstandard all the way. Best yes broken bosses I agree are a large contributer to the “problem”. But fixing them would take a complete rewrite of the whole boss and its mechanics.
This is something that ive been playing around with. Yes its not your standard “build”. While there is SOME diversity, many people only run the meta because its the most effective, thus giving the illusion that there is no diversity. But in reality, you can do almost any combo and be “effective”. Youll just have to dramatically change your play style to accommodate it.
What about this? I can basically keep (near) perma fury wil SoR and FGJ and stance will increasing damage even more, as well as keeping hp and armor up.
(edited by pdavis.8031)
Hmmm not bad, but it seems im sacrificing 300 armor, 13% crit damage, and 1k health for 200 attack. I agree the gs may be a good way to go, but ill keep the lb handy for a ranged weapon, as most dungeon runs are mostly stack in a corner out of range nowadays anyway :P I like the sigils, great addition to dps without sacrificing anything else. Im trying to keep my hp and armor as high as possible without sacrificing too much dps. Its a start though, I’ll keep looking at the gs for swap set and play around with some traits.
Everything I have is on the posted build. Im leaning more towards berserker for trinkets, and havent made up my mind for weapons yet, but im working on frostfang.
OK let me try this again. I want to stick as close as I can to my original build while maintaining survivability. I understand full DPS may be the best, I feel that survivability is important.
While I get that you are all trying to help, I’m not trying to argue that my build is better and that you’re all wrong. I haven’t seen much in the way of help as much of the response, and I’m at fault here too, has been along the lines of "your DPS sucks, and you should use the meta because it works, don’t argue just do it. "
I’m asking for suggestions on making this build work, give specific ideas, not just its horrible because x y z.
My criteria: mainly solo pve, with an occasional dungeon/fractal/group. I do change up for groups and such according to what I’m doing. Upon some help suggestions I’ve made some changes. Thanks.http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vIEQNAnXTnMdQpgW5BmhAnIIQQK0wvw8YICii4UgKUFwDA-zgDBYLBCnBkoAiIAgFAM3sIasFOERjlVoKJYqSRWXSI1zLY+EKqeBwAA-e
I’ve run it on ubuntu 13.04. However, and I’m assuming it has to do with my nvidia card, there was a wierd “fog of war” effect where everything beyond a certain range looked foggy. But aside from that it ran well, didn’t have any FPS drop that some people were having.
I like Rata Sum for crafting, bank, TP access. It’s all right next to the central WP and all the crafting stations are a short walk away. My favorite part is that it’s not super heavily populated as it’s kind of out of the way.
Welcome!!
Most impotant things first:
Have fun!
Pick a profession you think you’ll have fun playing, and as you level up and learn about specific traits and gear, pick one or a mix, of what works best for YOU.
The races are nearly the same, with the expecption of various racial abilities. Do some research and find one that appeals to you.
And finally. Join a guild or 3. It’s not hard to find a guild in game, generally someone will find you because you have no guild tag. Ask questions and join as YOU decide. Guilds are a great way to seek help in game, meet new people and generally cater to almost every play style.
Good luck!! Look forward to seeing you in game!!
Yeah, I haven’t got around to tinkets. Bascially using the same ones I’ve had for forever, although I had planned on a berserk set. Want to go full ascended on everything eventually.
I can see that, and yes I understand. However, in the last sub, instead of offering SOLUTIONS as Saint has, it was mostly a critizism of why it doesn’t work, and that only “good” players use zerk, and it was strongly implied that anything but zerk meant that I was a bad player. While I can take critizism, it gets frustrating when there are little to no soltuions being offered to make the stated build and style work better.
And yes, I agree having multi toons for diffrent functions is a great way to go, I’m working on several alts specifically for that.
^
This is why I moved to this sub :P
Taken you’re suggestions into account I’ve changed some things up a bit. I am think this might work while maintaining my goal.
I like the LB for ranged. The fire, blind, and immobilize have saved my but more often then not, and the rifle doesn’t offer that.
(edited by pdavis.8031)
I suppose I could trade Defy Pain for Cleansing Ire, or Spiked Armor or something. But for me, having the extra toughness works to help stay alive longer, which in a team setting means more to me then dealing more damage.
I mainly do PvE solo roaming. I occasionally do dungeons or fractals, but not often. And I do change things up from more team oriented activities. However, I am trying to take into account others opinions, and the reason I moved from the warrior sub was that it was almost nothing but “you are a bad player for not using the meta” and the like. There was very little as to WHY it’s a “medicore” build, other than DPS. The only other options presented were “go zerk” and not ways to IMPROVE the build and style that I am going for.
Again, I’m trying to have a build that focuses more on surviabilty, yet maintaining a respectable amount of DPS. A more “balanced” build that can function well in many situations without having to change much on the fly. Valkryie fits that critria of what I’m looking for.
So I’m moving away from the Warrior meta of zerk, and decided to do something different. I went for a Valkyrie build. However many people seem to think that this is a horrible build and completly useless, and in fact shows that I’m a bad player. I started a thread about this in the warrior forums, but was basically flamed down because it’s not DPS. What are some thoughts on this build and suggestions to improve it while maintaining a more support and survivability (tanky) build.
Please note, for reasons I won’t get into here, I refuse to run a zerk build, thats why I’ve chosen Valk.
What about dropping some cash in gems and converting them to gold? If you need it immediatly, and don’t have the time to run a bunch of dungeons and/or trains, that would be the way to go. If thats not an option. Perhaps speaking with a guild leader about accessing fund from the guild bank that you can pay back would also be an option. That is if you have a guild with a bank and the funds in it…
Wait!, So Pure DPS is not the only way to play!? Who would have thunk it… (/end sarcasm)
I really liked this guide. Even as a vet player, I have found many of the suggestions to be quite helpful. Thanks!
I give up. Apparently my biggest mistake was bringing this to the forums. Thanks for the beat downs.
Peace out
Allow me to retort:
#1: So with the current line up I have, I’m missing 20% DPS. Which is 2 extra hits in 10. I can live with that.
#2: Added defense=survivabilty without relying on endurance. While these may not add to my DPS, they do allow me to survive longer, thus allowing for more damage dealt over time.
#3: I don’t use banners. While I may not be contributing much to the team in the form of buffs, I feel the signets and FGJ allow me to contribute in other ways. Namely survival.
#4: While scholar runes may provide more power and crit damage, crit damage is meaningless unless you can crit. (aka more precision). I do agree that opal orbs and jewels would be better than the eagle runes.
#5: I like off hand axe. Axe 4 allows for fury without activating a signet or shout, and Axe 5 allows some crowd control. Hitting 5+ mobs for an average of 6k each as well dramtically increasing my adrenaline. If I do it right I can usually be full andrenaline after using f1 skill before f1 skill CD is finished.
All that being said, many of the upgrades are subject to change upon the patch. But just the screen shot of the Eagle runes, it seems to add more precision and more crit damage then it does already. I took a chance on those, but we’ll see what happens post patch.
I do appreciate your POSITIVE Feedback on my build though. I’m not trying to refute your claims on whats wrong with my build. I just want to show WHY I chose the traits that I did. I will also revisit my trait line up with the new traits coming out. The dual wielding one is something I’m keeping my eye on.
(edited by pdavis.8031)
Lastly, “maintaining a valk build” is a weir term for me. Why are you so married to the concept of Valkyrie’s gear? It’s like you found a conclusion (using Valkyries gear) and then went out of your way to find the question it solves. It strikes as the same attitude of an early adopter who buys a new product without waiting for reviews and then returns home after purchasing and reads all the reviews to confirm the decision that has already been made. I’m guessing your spent a ton of gold on Valkyries gear and you feel committed to running it. What you’d find is that you would probably have better DPS using exotic berserkers gear over ascended Valks, but barring that you would be better off using the meta traits and Valks gear to bad traits and Valks gear. So you made a mistake, the solution isn’t to double down and run a half-kittened pseudo tank build, it’s to try to fix it the best you can and make the best of your circumstances.
So before I made my ascended gear, I carefully weighed the pros and cons of each set before delving into it. I found that Valkyrie was much more appealing than Berserker. One of the main reasons was Vitality. I like to have more HP. It means I can stay in the fight longer. Yes I sacrifced presicion to do so, but traiting for precision and using precision runes makes up some of that. I wasn’t trying to go full tank. If I wanted that I would have rolled a guardian and geared and specd specifically for that. I spent around ~50g for the whole set, as I farmed pretty much all of it.
Which of my traits are bad? They work for what I’m try to accomplish and I feel compliment my gear well.
(edited by pdavis.8031)
Wait, so while I’m pulling mobs/boss AWAY from the group and doing DECENT damage at the same time, I’m not actually pulling anything and the avatars chasing me aren’t really chasing me. It’s all in my head? Yes I understand that you can’t “hold aggro” but I can get a group to chase me. Granted it’s not a for a long drawn out time, but it’s enough for the “squishier” people in the group to recover before diving back into the fray.
Do you want me to lie to you? No, you aren’t pulling more than 1/5th of the aggro. Sorry that’s the truth, the sooner you stop deceiving yourself the better you’ll be for it.
[Sarcasm] Apparently I don’t know how to play at all and am just a horrible player because I don’t follow the zerk mentality and be a mindless lemming. There is no other way to play than zerker, and in not doing so I’m ruining the game for everyone else. [End sarcasm]
I really need to learn to ignor the trolls
I’m not trolling, I’m trying to help you. If you don’t want help, fine. But don’t pretend you are something you’re not, your build is something it isn’t, and you’re doing something you are not doing.
So if I’m not kiting mobs away from the party, then what am I doing? If I can pull 3 mobs away from the group, thats 3 mobs that aren’t attacking everyone else.
Whats wrong with my build? The ONLY answer I’ve recieved on this subject is that it doesn’t do enough damage. I will gladly welcome any help on maintaining a valk build, and improvements towards that end. But the overall message that I’m getting is that anything but zerker sucks, and you’re a bad player, and stop trying to fight the system and just submit.
