Why can't I earn ascended through content?

Even if there was a way to obtain it for certain without crafting, it would still be a matter of RNG. And if it wasn’t, well there isn’t anything I can think of that give guaranteed loot anyway, with the exception of the skins from the AP chests, dailies, monthlies, and dungeon/fractal bonuses. But those don’t count, as those are more “monetary” type rewards, and I don’t think that was what the OP was refering to anyway.

Yeah it is a grind, but for now, with the way things are, its best that way. Until some of the game mechanics in general change, making ascended gear guaranteed drops just wouldn’t work. As there is no content difficult enough to warrent such a drop.

So I just started….
I finished everysingle thing to do on every map up to lvl 13 and now I have a quest that is lvl 16 and the zone is lvl 15-25, Literally done everything. are you telling me this game is a grindfest where I have to repeat the same events in the area for the next 2-4 hours to get a few thousands of experience……? THIS IS LVL 13!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????

How…how is this even possible!? I was level 16 before I even left the FIRST ZONE! Follow the suggestions that have been posted, I won’t reiterate them here. If you are not at the max level for that zone, you might want to go back and see if there was anything that was missed. Make sure you have 100% before leaving, that will help you level up quite a bit.

Is this really fun A-net ?

Fun is subjective. I find endlessly theorizing about mythology and histories fun. Many people do not. Some people think snowboarding is fun. Tried it, worst experience of my life. No one can make this game fun for you. Only you can make it fun for you. If doing those things aren’t fun, don’t do them. It’s simple really. It’s like getting mad at the ice cream vendor for selling you some ice cream you didn’t like. It’s not his fault. Overall it’s silly and ignorant to expect a game to cater to your specific ideas of fun. Just saying….

PvE Dueling

The only way I see open world dualing, or open world PvP working is on a whole seperate server. Much like what other MMOs have. (As that been quoted often enough as a reason it could work.) If you want to play that style, where you are in the open world, and can get ganked at any time by anybody, then you would have the option to do that. Otherwise you can keep the PvE as it stands. It wouldn’t be TOO difficult to implement, and lets those who want dualing/pvp in open world to have it, and the rest can continue on as is.

So maybe the EDs DID come from the mists, they are on Tyria for a reason, a reason we don’t know, and may never learn. Although I like the idea that the EDs are angry at the Mists, or greater beings of the mists, and are exacting their revenge on Tyria, being banished there.

Unless the devs come out with a new piece of lore, or we learn something in game about them, I just like to play around with various ideas and stories as to their origins, and their ultimate intentions on Tyria.

Not stated as such no. However, we do know that “It is said that all forms of life, no matter how simple or complex, can trace their origins back to this one place.” (the mists)
And also that the dragons “are ancient, powerful beings of unknown origins.”

We do know that most of the races on tyria came from the mists, there are questions about some, but I think it’s safe to safe that the majority of the more significant peoples were/are products of the mist. However, if dragons are of unknown origin, then we can infer that they are not of the mists. Of course we don’t know anything about “beyond” the mists, but that doesn’t mean that it cannot exist. (Much like trying to imagine something beyond eternity, eternity itself is difficult for us to comprehend.)

Of course it’s just speculation, and there probably will never be anything in the form of lore to support anything about the nature and origins of the dragons. As keeping things of this nature a mystery it adds to the appeal of the overall lore.

Some dungeons are doable with a 3 man team, as well as some fractals. Some will be impossible just because of the mechanics. You could always do champions and world bosses, however with the megaserver implementation there generally is a lot more people doing these as well, so keep that in mind that’ll it will be more than just your party. You could also do WvW roaming with your trio, exploring and what not. Jumping puzzles can also be fun with a small group.

If you need more people for a dungeon/fractal but want to fully explore, be sure to put in the description thats what you are doing to help narrow your seach for like minded people. Just make it clear what your intentions, and requirments are and you shouldn’t have a problem. Playing with new people can be a fun and rewarding experience. (If said people aren’t kittens wanting to do what they want to do and not working with the group, but thats not usually the case if your groups intentions are made clear.)

Newbie Questions

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

Welcome to the game!

to answer a few of your questions, several of them have been answered multiple times with the same answers, but here is my take on a few:

4.It largly depends on if you are in a group (dungeons, fractals, etc.) or running solo PvE. Solo, just go with it. Experiment. Find out which utiliy skills/weapon sets and traits work for what you want to do. There really is no sense in copying the meta while running solo. Just have fun. However in a group (Dungeons, fractals, etc.) the dynamics change. Some, not all but some, people in pugs (Pick Up Groups) only want you to run the meta, or a certain build. If you are joining those groups, be prepared for gear checks and possibly getting kicked because you don’t have what they are looking for. That being said, it’s not a requirement for you to use the meta in pugs (unless thats whats in the description). I run a non meta warrior in groups, and change up my traits and utilities according to the situation and do well. So it depends on the group and situation, but that part is up to what the group needs, and what you are comfortable playing with.

6. Most guilds I’ve been a part of are very casual and friendly. Although I was in one that was more strict in their repping requirements, and they tended to be jerks anyway. I actually left the guild after listening to some of the leaders and officers, as well as other members, bashing on me in teamspeak when they forgot I was logged in. Current guild is a very casual, and really cool, and doesn’t have much in the way of repping requirements, although they do kick if they see you rarely rep, just to clear space for some more active players. So it depends on the guild, and what the guilds goals are.

Hope this helps!! Good luck, hope to see you in game!

Who checks AP? Never been kicked/called out because of a lack of AP/ (4k in the year and a half I’ve played). If there are pug groups asking for x amount of AP I don’t join, even if I meet the requirements. I find such groups reprehensible, but thats how they want to roll. Thats ok, let them. Don’t trip about it. AP doesn’t really mean anything anyway, so don’t kill yourself trying to get to those higher levels of AP. Relax, take a deep breath, and next time someone tries to talk smack about your level of AP, just ignore them and move on.

Well circles, and rings hold significance in many religions, often as a symbol for eternity, unity, etc. It would make sense for Orr, paticularly Arah, being a highly relgious nation, to fashion everything to reflect that Orr was the place of the gods and use religious symbology in that endeavor.

Religions around the world regularly used circular arcitechure in the places of worship and other holy sites. It would seem that Orr was inspired by that style, and modeled after it. I don’t think it’s modeled after any one region, people, or reglion, but a combination of many and the circular style found in many cutures associated with various religions.

In the beginning were The Mists. And The Mists covered all and connected all. The Mists saw fit to create all manner of life, and out of The Mists came forth all manner of beings, great and small, the powerful and the mundane. And so it was that that some of these beings gazed upon the land called Tyria, and being moved by The Mists, decended upon that land and resided there. It came to past in ages long forgetten that the Dragons, great and powerful beings from beyond The Mists, looked upon The Mists and desired to commune with them. And so it was, that when the Dragons tried to enter The Mists, they were repelled by The Mists and cast aside. A great fury arose within the Dragons at their rejection from The Mists and they swore vengance upon The Mists. The Dragons turned their gaze upon the land called Tyria, and seeing the manner of creatures that had been chosen to reside there, descended upon the land in great fury and wrath, seeking to destroy what The Mists had wrought. The Dragons ravaged the land in their rage, utterly consuming and destroying all upon it. And when the fires of their rage had been spent, the Dragons fell into a great slumber. Feeding off the magical energies of the world and storing their strength until such a time they would awake and bring destruction upon the land of Tyria once again.

Getting bored of the game -> stuff to do?

Although these are great ideas, the end game is lacking, and I too find it boring. Ive made a full set of ascended armor, working on legendary. Dont much care for pvp and wvw is alright, but its mostly follow the zerg anymore. With the new wardrobe system, that pretty much leaves playing dress up. Some people are into fully customizable looks, thats ok, im not one of them.

OP: I feel you man. I still play, as I said working on legendary, but theres not much else to do in game. Ive recently been looking at the lore and the story though. I skipped a BUNCH of cool stuff on my first and second characters. Didnt really talk to npcs unless I had to and even then I skipped through it. I recently picked up gw1 again to get more of the back story, but am seriously considering rolling a new character just to go theough it again and pay attention to the lore and the story and become more involved with the npcs and their stories. So that might be something to consider.

Thank you! Yeah it kind bothered me that the real end game was playing dress up. After you got a full set of ascended, a legendary, multiple alts, and the like the only thing left was to get the skins to make yourself look pretty. While a wardrobe is important for RP it serves no real purpose otherwise. I just don’t get why the focus is so much on the wardrobe system and not on new content, or an expansion, or a million other things that matter to the world of Tyria, is everyone in the world that vain? Dragons, who are they

in Lore

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

So I read up on the elder dragons on the wiki. It seems they absorb magic for a period of time, wake up destroy everything, go back to sleep, and the magic they absorbed leaks back out into the world. They were here thousands of thousands of years before the the gods, and the gods themselves didnt know where they came from. So maybe the dragons always were. They have their own names because thats what they called themselves since always. Just like some of our gods. They have names, and thats what their names always were, just because. In any case it seems like the are tyrias “recyclers” if you will. They absorb the magic to keep in in check, and when it becomes out of control, like it did in the last awakening, the magic became “wild”, they awake and destroy the world, essentially starting a new age and resetting the world and in the process bring magic back into balance before going back to sleep. As forces of nature their reason for being is to cleanse and renew the earth from time to time. Just like regular seasons, and changes within the earth. This is a much more dramatic version of that. An ending of one age, a cleansing, and the waxing and waning of life. (I.e. fall, winter, spring, summer)

Recognition of PvE players

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

pdavis.8031

So by your definition, I am not skilled at all, because only skilled players run zerk.

At least all skilled warriors run zerk so yeah.. you should face reality : you could be better

But what makes one skilled in PvE? Is it the build? Gear set? How many titles, or AP points you have? How fast you can clear a dungeon? Nearly everything can be farmed one way or another, or bought from the TP so that doesn’t mean anything. And speed runs don’t equate skill. All a speed run shows is that you’ve chosen the best meta build, and you know the exploits.

And just because I don’t run beserker doesn’t mean I’m not good. Granted I’m terrible at PvP and WvWvW, those are not really my game styles, don’t enjoy them. But this is PvE we are talking about, it’s a completely different mechanic. And there really is no way to determine how good someone is in PvE.

I chose NOT to run beserker on purpose, yes its the meta, yes it’s the highest DPS, but I wanted to go a different route with my Warrior. That doesn’t mean I’m a bad player. It means I didn’t want to be a sheep and do what every other warrior was doing. DPS doesn’t mean much to me. I have different goals. So your inferance that I’m a bad player by not running beserker is insulting and uncalled for.

Don’t try to justify your play style, I don’t care why you don’t want to play zerk. Maybe it’s because you “don’t want to be a sheep”, maybe it’s because you can’t handle zerk, maybe it’s something else it doesn’t matter. For me, a warrior exists to deal damage. When I take a warrior in my group, it’s because I need DPS, nothing else.

Regarding your question “what makes one skilled in PvE?” it’s very simple : The best PvE players are those who are the best in FoTM (which is the HL part of PvE). When you’re good in FoTM you can do everything in PvE. How to know what group is the best at FoTM? The one who finishes first. Why? Because it means that they were more efficient than others. As I said before, playing zerk requires way more skill than playing PVT or Toughness, Power, Precision or anything else.

Im not trying to justify my build or Play style. Im trying to point out that speed runs and dps are not valid measures of skill. Having a tournament to see who could clear a dungeon, or bosses, or fractals or whatever the fastest doesnt equal the most skillful players. All that it would do is reinforce the zerker meta, which it appears anet is trying to move away from, and endorse skipping and exploits. Super speed runs and stacking would become the only acceptable way to play. For anyone using a different type of gear/build it would mean they become useless and obsolete and met with more ridicule then they do now.

I wouldn’t mind having something to determine skill in PvE, but there is no way to do that that wont be exploited, and result in less build diversity and more animosity between players. Im all for competition, but fractals/dungeon runs would not be a good way to determine who is the best.

Maybe something that included the various aspects of pve, jps, world bosses, timed events, exploration and discovery all in the same instance. Like a solo scavenger hunt that spanned the whole world, included world bosses and jps and events, all to be done in a time limit. Disable all but one WP in each zone while hunt is enabled. Something like that would he more of a measure of skill than fractal/dungeon zerker speed runs.

Failed to kill the boss? what boss? If you kill both of the chanters on one side, more spawn, and continue to spawn as you kill them, endlessly. I’ve done it both ways, and leaving one is FAR easier then killing both. It would seem that making the run EASIER would be the sign of a “good” player, because it makes it faster. But speed isn’t the definition of a good player.

Aside from the issues of modeling, and what not, and the ritual needed to make such a character, they wouldn’t fit into the world at all. Can you imagine a corrupted whatever gaining access to the Vigil? or the Priory? They would be killed on sight. Entering into cities? forget it. If the guards didn’t kill you, you’d have an entire city of angry frightened citizens trying to kill you. Even if you did manage to convince the heads of the Orders to let you work with them, you’d still be met with fear and distrust from everyone. And many members of the various Orders would kill you the first chance they got, regardless of orders and how well you showed you were trust worthy. You are a minion of a dragon in their eyes, and no matter what you say or do would change that. At best, they would take you in and watch you like a hawk and try to figure out what your mission from the dragon was. At worst, you die. Period.

What if the dragons are “anti-gods”? Those who by whatever means achieved godhood, but did so for the forces of evil. We know that the six have the aspects of “good”. (i.e. light, justice, order, life, etc.) but few, or none, from the aspects of “evil”. (i.e. chaos, death, decay, darkness, etc.). It would make sense for them to take the form of dragons and use avatars and minions to wreck havoc upon the world, much like the six use avatars to bring wholeness to the world. Also it makes sense for them to remain unknown, as they remain hidden and asleep for many generations at a time. The ones we do know about, and their names, is because they are the most recent ones to have awaken. They recieved their names, or changed them, upon becoming “anti-gods”. We could also ask the same about the gods. How do we know their names? Apparently it was revealed to their followers at some point by them, so why couldn’t it be true of the dragons as well?

While I do belive that Evon Gnashblade is up to something with the armor repairers, it seems that after losing the elections he’s playing another game to gain power. As far as the BLTC company having so much power? yes. They have a hand in everything, it’s basically a centralized bank with no accountability. But Evon working for them? Not likely. It goes against the whole philosophy of the charr. Evon wants power.

“The charr race was forged in the merciless crucible of war. It is all they know. War defines them, and their quest for dominion drives them ever onward. The weakling and the fool have no place among the charr. Victory is all that matters, and it must be achieved by any means and at any cost”

Evon stood to gain nothing by working to defeat Scarlet. He wants power and authority, is trying to further his agenda, whatever it may be. By monopolizing the armor repair industry, he in essence controls the players. We HAVE to see them from time to time. If he was working for the BLTC, you’d start to see a reduction in instant repair canisters, until eventually they went away completely. Whatever he’s planning, it relies on the PCs becoming weaker. All that he needs to do is stop all the armor repairers from working. They still get paid, but no longer repair PC armor. Eventally all our armor is broken, and we are defenseless against what he has planned.

That depends on what you define as “skilled players”. To me, skilled doesn’t mean pulling a meta zerker build off the forums, dodging out of red circles, and out of the way of heavily telegraphed attacks, and speed running through a dungeon. yes it does require coordination, just like EVERY OTHER BUILD in a group. Theres a reason zerkers run in zerker only groups. Not because the other builds aren’t complatible, because it means that the zerker has to do something other than faceroll the boss. They aren’t built for it. The idea is to kill the boss fast before it can do damage to you. It doesn’t take a genious to build for maximum amount of damage, anyone can do that. It doesn’t take a genious, or much skill, to hit hard and fast, and fall back when you take too much damage.

A skilled player, in my mind, is one who can adapt to any situation with ANY group regardless of party makeup. I’ve seen too many zerkers lying dead in dungeon runs, and whining that it was the groups fault because they tried a faceroll and failed because the group wasn’t built for it.

So yeah, just because you are zerk, doesn’t mean you are a skilled player, like drakner said, being the best at dodging, and burning down mobs doesn’t nesseccarily equal skill. It’s difficult to define what is skilled in PvE anyway. I would say I’m fairly skilled in PvE, and guess what? I play a non zerk warrior. So by your definition, I am not skilled at all, because only skilled players run zerk.

Ask yourself a few questions:
Which profession do I enjoy the most?
Which Profession do I want to fully master?
What am I trying to put into the game and get out of it?

How you answer these questions will help you choose one to main. Try not to switch characters unless there is an important and valid reason for it. For example, your group is getting wiped continually in a dungeon because of the lack of a certain skill set found on another character, would be a valid reason. I like the way my female characters “assests” bounce when she jumps so I’ll play her, is not.

With many of the games aspects now account wide, there really isn’t much of a reason to play alts anymore, unless you need a certain skill set for a paticular situation.

Recognition of PvE players

Yeah, it would turn into a DPS/Zerker/speed fest. It wouldn’t reflect on anything, other than that group copied the meta well enough to do it. That doesn’t really mean anything, because any noob can get full zerker gear, trait accordingly and still maximize DPS. If you wanted PvE recognition you’d had to have an arena type setup where one would SOLO all the hardest dungeon/FotM bosses back to back with no breaks on a continous random rotation. And then your name goes up on a leader board for number of bosses killed.

Wait so anything bought from tp is account bound? And items crafted with mats bought from the tp are account bound? So if I was working on leveling up a craft, I couldn’t buy mats from the tp. Why? Because the items crafted are not sellable on the tp, or salvageable because you cant salvage account bound items. Cant sell them to a vendor either. Mystic toilet? Possibly, but not likely. Then the only other option is to destroy it. Yeah no thank you, ill keep a secure password and change it every so often and continue to block and report any gold seller/bots thank you very much.

Rhonan: Are you talking about the completion percentage after doing world completion? If so it’s because they did add several new WPs and POIs to the game, but if you already have it, then they don’t count against you.

That does make sense. However, I would suggest that while it (the wiki) states that the Asura had 6 great cities, and scattered citadels BEFORE fleeing, it does state that they did find magical ruins and built upon those. It would stand to reason that Rata Pten is one of those citadels built while still underground, as it’s only the above ground portion of the citadel and it was abandoned some time BEFORE the exile from the depths. But that leaves little Mursaat influence on the Asura. And the Mursaat were believed to reside mainly in the Isle of Janthir, and that is yet unexplored.

I understand that blows up my original theory, but I would be interested in seeing more of the Mursaat in future developments

How about this? Now please understand I never really played GW1, and only partially followed the story/lore in GW2. Now conerning the link between the Mursaat and the Asura. I gather that the Asura were an underground race and than fled to the surface at some point, found some ruins, and built upon them creating Rata Sum. I don’t know if we’ve been able to visit the undergound city that the Asura fled or not, but it seems to me that there are various ruins that resemble Asurian architecture. But we know them to predate the Asurian exodus. Therefore, I can only surmise that when the Asura fled to the surface, they found the ruins, and instead of rebuilding them in accordance with their architectural style, they were able to extrapolate the current architechture and rebuild accordingly. So what is now taken as Asurian design, could actually be Mursaat(ian?) in nature, just adopted by the Asura.

The wiki on Asura states that their writing is the only thing about their culture that remains unchanged.
“The asuran script, the asura’s written language, is among the most used writing styles in Tyria. Though only used by asura who also use New Krytan, it is one of the parts of their culture that has remained unchanged since their surfacing from the Depths.”
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Asura
So if their writing is the only thing that remained unchanged, it doesn’t seem to make sense that other aspects of their culture (i.e. Architechture) survived, and they rebuilt the ruins in accordance with that.

Dual Axes, is it a lost cause?

I use axe offhand almost exclusively. Although axe 5 does less damage than auto attack, I found it can refill adrenaline quickly. After using f1, then 5, I can refill adrenaline before the cool down. That way I can spend traits and utilities on other things, rather than adrenaline building.

Just me though

It’s a bit overkill though as generally you can build your adrenaline up before the CD’s over on a single target anyway. Against 2 or more it can get ridiculous even without any sort of trait that boosts adrenaline. Hitting 3 enemies with your axe AA you’ll be full adrenaline well before the AA chain ends.

Yes you can build your adrenaline up on a single mob quickly, if you trait for it. In my experience, I can build it faster using axe 5, than just AA. It tends to take a bit longer just using AA to build adrenaline. Against multiple mobs, yeah I can build it fast without axe 5, but axe 5 helps tag more mobs, as well as helping bring them down a little quicker, and quickly building adrenaline.

Unless I’m doing something wrong, I tend to like axe 5 for tagging and adrenaline building, out of the dual wield weapon combos I’ve used.

But thats kind of the point…some money making mechanics have been nerfed, yet the biggest gold sink left intact. Its supposed to be a counter to inflation. I don’t see it lasting that way forever, but rather change according to economic needs.

Biggest gold sink? Umm no…

Maybe not the biggest, but what else is there? Vendors? TP tax? Gems? There are not many gold sinks in this game

yes, it would save money over time. However, it’s still just a small amount its hardly noticable. Even so, with the money nerfs a gold sink is still needed. Almost no one uses the vendors except maybe for salvaging kits, so vendors don’t really count as a gold sink. The only other gold sink, aside from WPs is the TP tax. A 20% reduction of that gold sink would mean that players are saving a small amount of money, sure, but it would mean that the rate of inflation is just slowed by 20%.

How many waypoints are you possibly using to blam even a single gold so hard? o_O

You’d have to WP from one far end to the other (~4s) ~25 times for 1 gold. And thats just going back and forth if you are not doing ANYTHING in the zones you WP to. Even travelling to just to gather can net you SOME cash, not to mention killing mobs, selling loot, doing events, etc. It’s still such a small fee it’s almost negligable.
