@OP

Sorry about the derail. It was highly entertaining, however from what ive seen so far the greater consensus agrees that the TP is more of a blessing than a curse.

Also it wouldnt surprise me to learn that devs are reading this and laughing just as much as we are. They to have a sense of humor, and pop in from time to time to join.

Its seems youd be better off buying pre nailed wood, than nailing it yourself. While a nail gun is the most efficient, followed by hammers, rocks and foreheads, its even faster just to buy it. Although PUFs are not always effective, im sure there is a guild or 3 dedicated to driving nails, and have mastered the process using a specific nailing build comprised of nailguns, hammers, and foreheads. Unless of course said nailed wood is account bound on aquire, as im sure it is.

In order to that they would have to greatly expand the city to at least 8 times the size and scope of Divinities Reach. I dont think that having a map that large will work very well unless that made it into several zones.

I’m using this one, and never had any issues running anything. Granted I may not be able to go ultra high end on the graphics, but min to med on certain settings works fine. Although I wouldn’t mind getting a newer one…

Edit: Just found out its easy to upgrade the CPU, GPU, HDD, and RAM.
I might look at this GPU and this CPU Which would be a far cheaper alternative to buying a whole new machine.

CPU should run about $800-100 on ebay, and the GPU $120-150. Which isn’t bad at all…

-You can easily reference, from memory, any of the above threads.

I would say it’s closer to the 100-150% also for most people. The cost of getting it to 300% is very high and out of reach for many to do it quickly. If you salvage everything then the loss of the greens and blues to sell adds up. Most people don’t have the ectos to waste salvaging them either. It’s more the hard core salvagers that have 300%. And truthfully, it’s hard to see any increase in drops with the increase in MF, which means it doesn’t really feel important to increase MF.

Just a question about salvaging and ectos. Unless you are talking about salvaging ectos themselves, I don’t see how etco has anything to do with salvaging. I’m just confused by the wording.

However I do agree. Having 300% MF is more of an endgame goal than anything. Much like Ascended armor. Not really usefull unless you are running higher level fractals. Otherwise you can still do quite well with exotic.

While we’re using analogies, I think ‘nailgun vs hammer’ is a flawed way of looking at this. We need something more complex and fitting.

It’s like working on a job site, with not only a nailgun, but the very latest hardware available. But you’re working alone, under the scrutiny of cameras, and the foreman counts every single nail you use.

Versus

Old fashioned hammers-and-nails, saggy pants, cat-calling-at-the-ladies-passin’ by construction work. With all your best mates, taking your time (occasionally sneaking off at lunch hour for a few cold ones) but getting the job done.

Have you ever been on a job site? I used to work construction and the latter was much more prevailant. Although we did have the latest tools, the cat calling, taking your time, (I was accused of working too hard by my supervisor) was a mandatory part of the job. Plus I forgot what the hammer/nailgun analogy was about, and was just being stupid :P

The Trading Post is a tool. In that respect it makes the game better (it’s like asking if using a nailgun is a blessing over using a big rock to hammer things together).

But.. but…, the nailgun is killing the real fun of hammering nails. And since I’m working so much more efficiently, I have too much time on my hands. The main appeal of hammering nails was the experience of pounding them into wooden boards. The nailgun creates an imbalance in fun when it negatively affects the use of the big rock to hit nails. This becomes a P2W issue, since not everyone can afford the nailgun.

False and illogical for reasons already explained. The main purpose of driving nails, whether with a nailgun, hammer, big rock, or forehead, is to secure two boards together. Whether it’s fun or not is subjective. If you don’t want the two boards together, don’t use nails.

(thats about how ridiculous this thread is going)

But I’m all for the experience of securing two wood boards together the old fashioned way, by using a big rock to pound them in. Because the nailgun makes it so easy to drive a nail through both boards, it takes away from the fun that I’m entitled to when I initially wanted to secure both boards together. It’s not a matter of choice here, because I truly need those two boards to be stuck securely. I can’t use glue, because there’s currently no option for it.

But if glue is release in my area, that would be yet another P2W issue, since other people might not be able to afford the glue and/or the nailgun. It’s not a matter of convenience here, since the time I save securing two boards together directly translates into $$$. Here’s the mathematical formula:

Time – (time saved) = Money + x
*where x = profit

But adding glue to the game would be more of a reason to exploit the TP. Hooves will then become the ultimate currency and completely break the economy. And the nailgun is optional. You can still use your forehead or big rock to drive nails. There are also other ways to secure to boards without nails or glue. One could lash them together for instance. I get that time equals money, but don’t forget that Godwin’s law also applies.

This idea would be like sharing WXP across your account. Then I wouldn’t even have to play my ele in WvW to earn arrow cart mastery…

Yes, but WvW is totally different then PvE, in almost every aspect. In WvW your character level is already 80 so thats not really an issue. Having WXP account wide makes it easier to play WvW with alts and be able to bring more to the table by maintaing the WvW rewards already earned for the account.

PvE EXP account wide would just mean a bunch more level 80s, no clue how to play them and not having ANY gear to speak of. Than people would be complaining that they couldn’t afford exotics, or crafting/grinding for gear was too expensive, and too boring, and how GW2 is becoming nothing but a grindfest and how much Anet sucks for implementing such a horrible system.

Reaching level 80 is supposed to be a milestone. Having all you alts reach it at once trivializes that.

(^ Not sure if being sarcastic or trolling but….)

That is false and illogical for reasons already explained. Black Lion keys can be farmed and can be found as a drop.

Create a new character, human commoner, and run through PS story to level 10. 100% key drop. Transfer key to bank via banker golem given at creation of new character. Delete Character, rinse and repeat. Takes 15-20 minute with a group, 25-30 solo. Open chests, get speed boosters, run your heart out.

OP: I feel you. I’m in the same position. While I enjoy playing my necro alt, I also like to do dungeon runs with my guild. I am also working on a legendary for my main, so spend most of the time playing him. But I do find doing all the hearts, events, vistas, etc. boring. However I don’t think accountbound EXP across all characters is a good idea. At best, you’d have a bunch of level 80s that you had no idea what to do with and wouldn’t be able to be effective in any group. At worst, everyone would have a bunch of level 80s, and lower level content and zones would become massive zerg fests (even more then they are already) and become even more dead as there would be no reason to ever be there.

seriously china just got gw2 u honestly think they release a new box directly ??

and who say anet dont make money ?

I’m with you. It takes a huge amount of money and resources to launch a game in a new market, even if the game has already been launched. If anet was losing money they wouldnt even consider such a huge launch as the cost would be far more then the overall gain. Love it or hate it, the gem store does make money. While we dont have access to the actual numbers, we can see the exchange rate of gems to gold increasing. Which means lots of people are buying gems, using some and converting to gold. It takes so much gold to get gems, many people, myself included, will just spend 15-20 dollars and get the gems that way. Its faster and youll always get the same amount of gems.

Having an expansion model does mean that sales spike at the launch, there is little steady income until the next expansion. But the sales from a cash shop keep coming in. Its kinda like getting paid a 6 month salary at the start of that period, then nothing for another six months. You can have that, or have a Daily income that has much more of a potential of making more during that same 6 month period. I don’t know about you, but I would take the latter.

The only problem is that your numbers add up.

But let me first ask you something.. You buy gems to convert to gold. So you don’t like the game enough to play the content?
You did not buy the game to play it but to be then able to buy ingame items?

No to the numbers. We do have some of the numbers and here they are:
https://dviw3bl0enbyw.cloudfront.net/uploads/forum_attachment/file/151443/1q14_NCSoft.jpg
We can compare GW2’s graph with GW1’s graph to see the relevant incomes for the two.
Calculations here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/NcSoft-earnings-1Q-14/page/3#post4029793

What we see if that GW2 had done it the same way as GW1 (no cash-shop and regular expansions) they would likely have earned more money by now. Now maybe GW1 was a little to fast for a game like GW1 with expansions so lets say they would release an expansion every year then GW2 would have been earning more money with that model from the second expansion sale.

That is a steady income with a years interval. That should work just fine, numbers seem to show that it would generate more money and there would be no need for cash-shop focus so everything can be ingame resulting in a better game, more people and a better name for ArenaNet.

And then we haven’t talked about the period after that (longer term). This cash-shop focus alienates many people. That is not good at all for the long-term.

It might be just fine for you (since you are a buyer). You might not might that game-play is made a gold-grind to get more gem-sales you just buy the gold. But many people do care and do leave.

I never said I bought gems to convert to gold. I said I’ve bought gems. There were some items in the store I wanted. Any leftovers were converted to gold, yes, but that wasnt my motivation for buying them. I enjoy the content and play regularly.

Also those numbers don’t show how much revenue was game sales, and how much was gems. That is if they are seperate and not bundled together. It is also important to note that guild wars 2 was the fastest selling western mmo in history.www.guildwars2hub.com/news/guild-wars-2-fastest-selling-mmo-history
With over 3 million games sold in the first 9 months. Thats why you see a large drop off of sales toward the present. You can rest assured that number will shoot up again upon china release. So while they are at an average of income with their other games, its a far stretch to say they are losing money or not making enough.

They went with the cash shop for a reason. The expansion model is a fading trend, and cash shops are where most games are going. Not just mmos, every type of game you can imagine. Facebook type games are making millions, and its solely a cash shop revenue. There is no proof that money is being lost, or they arent making enough, and everything points towards a sustainable amount of income from the current model even if we dont have the exact numbers.

I still believe there are in fact 7 dragons total, not 6. Why 7? If you’ve noticed, each of the dragons can be linked to a different deadly sin.

Jormag – Wrath
Kralkatorrik – Greed
Primordius – Sloth (face it, he has the power to easily take the surface, but does NOTHING)
Mordremoth – Envy (if the Sylvari are his minions, they look enough like humans and seek info to the point where he could be seen as being envious of the races)
Bubbles – Lust (this is a massive guess)
Zhaitan – Gluttony (he had a mouth that loved to eat, and he loved to kill things just to add their knowledge to his own, a literal insatiable hunger for people’s knowledge)

This leaves a single sin unaccounted for…Pride. So my guess is a 7th dragon will be revealed, this one probably will be the most intelligent of the bunch, and likely a manipulator, with massive pride in his ability to subtly make any race or creature do his bidding.

Interesting. However its been stated several times, both on the wikis and ingame clearly state that there are 6 dragons. It makes sense to have 6 dragons as forces of evil as a balance to the six gods

@pdavis: I know what you mean, but now that I know about Modremoth, I want to find out more about him. Can you imagine if ANet chose to just continue leaving him as a perpetually imaginary figure? It’d be so unfulfilling – there’d be no catharsis.

It’s also why Scarlet was a bit unfulfilling for me as a character. Her debut into the world was as a crazed sort of villain. Wanton killing? Check. Maniacal laughter? Check. Hallucinations? Check. But she still seemed to me like a flat character.

I think it’s partly because I can’t empathize with her. She seems like she was supposed to be painted as a tragic character, but the game didn’t really bring that part across. She seems to have been born a snob – even as Ceara.

Oh I totally agree! It would be awesome for more story and in game information about the EDs in general. But I get why they leave a lot out as well.

That is also true, however some of what we do know about dragons doesnt come from in game. For example mordreth. Mordreths name doesnt ever appear in game, but does on the wiki. We only know of 4 of the dragons names from dwarven and jotan lore, and (from what I understand) Nightfall in GW1. (Ive only just started gw1 so havent got that far.) We do know that there are 6 from in game. But the last time they arose was about 10,000 years before the start of gw1. Must of the history was lost during that time. Much of the history of the mursaat, forgotten, tengu, and others is forgotten. And probably will never be recovered. And leaving such history lost and forgotten just adds that much more to the world. It makes it seem more real. Rather than having a fully recorded hostory of everything, its better to leave much upnto speculation and the imagination.

Of course it is. They did that on purpose. We will only get small trickles and tidbits of history and information about the EDs. It allows for the player to use thier imagination more. Its what all good story tellers do, they leave stuff unexplained as it adds to the mystery and intrigue.

If you have an item that has gone through skin progression, like a legendary weapon or one of the Spinal Blade backpacks from the “Escape from Lion’s Arch” and “Battle for Lion’s Arch” releases, you will unlock all of the skins in that direct line of progression. That means that if you MADE Twilight, you will have access to both the Twilight and Dusk skins across your entire account. If you’ve CREATED the Dynamic Tempered Spinal Blades, you’ll unlock that skin and all previous Spinal Blade skins"

The algorithm may be just a simple ratio of the two “depositories” within the exchange, one for gold, one for gems, and a 15% sink applied to when gold comes in and goes out.

Simple long division isn’t normally considered an “algorithm”.

Don’t forget having to update the values of the depositories every time there is a transaction. That’s a very important part of the algorithm.

Assuming that is how the currency exchange operates. How do you know that the currency exchange algorithm is as simple as you say it is ?

There is no algorithm.

Do you even know what an algorithim is ?

In mathematics and computer science, an algorithm is a step-by-step procedure for calculations. Algorithms are used for calculation, data processing, and automated reasoning.

How can the currency exchange set a price without using an algorithm on the raw data ?

By saying it’s set by supply and demand, ANET are saying they are using some algorithm. They just aren’t saying what it is.

Yes I understand what an algorithm is. However saying that they are using an algorithm implies that the system is controlled by Anet.

No it doesn’t. An algorithm means it’s automated in some way. Inputs go in, algorithm does some processing, outputs come out. No need for any human intervention.

For there to be no algorithm, then ANET would have to manually adjust it.

While I agree that there is formula (which would be a better word)

Which definition of algorithm are you using ?

Because it seems a very unusual one.

The gem to gold conversion artificially creates gold

Does it really ?

John Smith disagrees

There seems to be some confusion:
The currency exchange has a supply of Gems and Gold.

If players are converting Gold to Gems, then the Amount of Gold player will receive for their gems goes up.
If players are converting Gems to Gold, then the amount of Gems players receive for Gold goes up.

The exchange rate changes based on the scarcity of each supply. You cannot inflate it, it’s an exchange rate. As players purchase in one direction, it entices purchases in the other direction.

It doesn’t create gold. It only has gold previous players have put into it. Maybe with the addition of a small startup amount ANET added on release because the algorithm doesn’t work well with a quantity of 0.

I stand corrected. However, if the algorithm put in place from the start is taking care of the exchange rate, then its operating as intended. Thus creating the exchange rate as we see it. So unless they rigged the algorithm, it should be a fair rate based on gem purchases.

But seriously, after being asked my FotM lvl as a requirement for Arah, I suppose I saw everything.

Really!? As if that has much of a bearing on Arah at all…Thats funny.

Unless they got that AP from mindless zerg farming, which could also be the case. Although I agree that time spent in game CAN lead to better players. Thats not always the case. And the opposite is true as well. Been playing 1.5 years, only have 4500 AP, but still would consider myself to be a decent player…

If this is a response to my post keep in mind that I said that time spent in game provides an opportunity to grow as a player, not a guarantee. Not everyone takes advantage of opportunities.

Oh I totally agree with you, just wanted to point out that having a lower amount of AP doesn’t mean you are a bad player either (edited my post to reflect that).

While AP can be used as some sort of measuring tool, it seems silly and counter productive to me to use that number as the sole basis to find other players for dungeons/fractals/etc.

I very rarely kick people from pugs. Only had to do it a couple of times for afk’ers and one spectacularly foolish player that had no idea what fractals was all about.
“lvl 49” in LFG
player joins and we roll harpies
player gets blasted off every platform possible
Boss fight, player gets one shot 5 times by asura and we wipe three times trying to save him
I check his AP and he’s at 1.5k. Normally that wouldn’t be an issue but this is fractals 49 and going down like that so regularly led my guildie to ask him how much AR did he have. Response? “What’s that?” Linked him an ascended item. Response? “Wow, I’d be lucky to have those” Gave him a quick run down of what AR was and what ascended items were, then booted him.

AP isn’t a gauge in determining skill, but it can be a good determination of familiarity with aspects of the game. Some times, like in most dungeons, inexperienced players can be carried, and I don’t mind doing so. But in high level fractals, everyone really needs to pull their weight

Now that is a legit reason for kicking someone.

I still don’t use AP as a requirement though. In fact my pugs don’t have requirements. Sometimes we get a good group, other times not so much. But I enjoy helping those who may not know whats going on. Thas just me though.

The content in the Cliffs last year was all very specifically designed to support the story of the election that was happening between Ellen Kiel and Evon Gnashblade. It really wouldn’t have made sense to keep the map open without turning much of that content off, and that would have left the area feeling very empty and lifeless. There are other reasons beyond this, but for maps like this, which are based around a festival or a special event like the election, it just couldn’t have worked to keep it open year round. It’s only a few more days until you all get to play in the map again. I can’t read into the future, but we love the gameplay and the bizaare atmosphere of the bazaar, so I believe it will continue to be a setting we can return to when it fits with the story we’re trying to tell. :-)

Woot!! Thanks for the reply!! Looking forward to it!

The argument of the PtP UI holding no weight (for some reason it won’t let me quote)

It actually holds lots of weight. For each player scammed, wrong items added, wrong amounts added, etc. one can almost garauntee that there will be support tickets started of people complaining they got ripped off, and want the offender banned, and their items returned. This creates a drain on Anet staffing sifting through such complaints. Which ties up resources that could be better spent on other things.

Again this topic has been discussed fully here . Please review it so we can focus on some of the other things that have merit.

The TP is great for being a TP but the fact you cannot look up light, heavy armor and only get that is annoying.

What? There is a filter system that filters out by armor weight, rarity, level, etc. and display only what you are looking for. I use it frequently.

Unless you have a separate program running with your TP, you can’t filter by armor weight. You can filter by level, rarity, and piece type (helm, shoulder, boots, etc.); but you can’t search by/filter by weight.

I stand corrected. I was sure there was that filter. Oh well.

Blessing. No scams. No worries about getting ripped off. Not having to deal with WTS/WTB spam. Can ALWAYS find a seller and a buyer for items. Its easy to use. Provides a gold sink. And the list goes on.

- Dungeon bug fixes that allow making shortcuts and quick boss kills

I believe that the OP is talking about fixing those bugs that cause skipping and quick boss kills, and not for making the dungeons even more skippable and boss fights faster. Which would be an excellent idea.

Sidetrack time .. wut? You can filter for just heavy boots, for instance? And not get all the medium and light boots too? When did they put that in and can you provide a screenshot to prove it?

I will have to upload one later, at work right now and no access to my computer.

@Tsu regarding PtP trading

False and Illogical for reasons already explained fully in this thread.
A PtP trading system is not a good idea for this game. Although it works well in others, this paticular game wouldn’t support it well, and we have a 100% secure way to trade already.

Elder Dragons as Antagonists

Very interesting. Great topic!

However, I don’t see the ED’s as the main antagonists. Before you all jump on me about this hear me out.

We do see Zhaitan as the main antagonist in the Personal Story. Thats fine. But I see the EDs as a backdrop. A setting for why the world is the way it is right now. It provides motivation for the Player Character to do what he is doing. Otherwise the PC is your typical adventurer just out doing things, and fighting against the EDs and their minions simply because they were bored one day and decided fighting EDs would be cool. There is much speculation as to whether or not the EDs can even be killed, although Zhaitan has been said to be dead, its not officially confirmed (but thats a whole other topic and I won’t get into it here).

I see the LS BEBGs (Big Evil Bad Guys) as the main antognists for each season. Much like any TV series. While in the (shows) universe there is an overarching evil force, each new season introduces a different BEBG that is somehow connected to that force.
Season 1 saw Scarlet Briar as the main antagonist, but with strong connatations of a connection to an ED. (Mordreth, although that was never reaveled in-game to my knowledge)

If we were to encounter and defeat all the EDs, and the world gets better and everyone lives happily ever after. That wouldn’t leave much to do afterwards. As an MMO you NEED to leave much of the world and story open ended. So the game remains playable for years to come.

I do agree the Zhaitan fight was lacking, and wasn’t as epic as I had hoped it would be. But the ending did leave many unanswered questions and left lots of room to add more to it at a later point.

Your science joke is ILLOGICAL and completely false for reasons that have already been explained.

kudos if you can catch the reference

False! and illogical for reasons already explained. The science joke was just plain awful.

(See it does work for everything!)

The both of you, even though you are saying different things I’ve decided that your arguments are ILLOGICAL. They are completely false and incorrect, for reasons I’ve already explained.

(Waves hand dismissively. Ignores the points you made and then brings up a totally unrelated argument as a rebuttal).

That is false and illogical for reasons already explained.
The megaserver DOES allow for other players to work together with others from other servers. However, the addition if an in-game mass spectrometer would allow for more secure analysis of the BMI of the NPC in question. Without it the chances for correctly deducting the BMI of a player are subject to failure. As I’ve explained before.

@bubi

The statements made by Colin in that interview regarding the questions asked, don’t leave much for wiggle room.

The first WVW (server versus server versus server) competition made the player-base go “through the roof”, apparently. “That was maybe the biggest thing we did in the second-half of the year to affect player population. When that league was going on, when the world-versus-world season was going on, WVW was just packed.”

“Population-wise, we’re doing great,” insisted Johanson. “We’re very happy with where we’re at. Six months ago to now, it’s a very steady, very very healthy population.”

As for dwindling investment, it appears to be a myth: ArenaNet had a whopping 300 people when Guild Wars 2 launched, and now… now there are 350 and counting – ArenaNet is hiring.

I don’t see how any of that can be taken out of context. It’s pretty cut and dried.

Putting it in an instance would classify it as a raid. But then how many are allowed in an instance? Same as a full map? You’d still have the exact same issues. Players joining instance not knowing what they are doing, not listening to instructions, trolling, or not actively involved in the event, just tagging and waiting for loot. It wouldnt really solve anything. Plus it goes against anets view of open world events. If you want raids there are other games for that. Guild wars 2 isnt one of them. It was designed that way on purpose.

Why would we want instanced 150 man content? Most guilds can’t field that many people anyway so we’d still be left with less than 10 guilds on an entire region of the world to do them. Even then, we wouldn’t be left with the same situaton, because random people wouldn’t be entering it. It would be for guild only or something like that. Guild wars 2 obviously has made an effort to hardcore content. Its just that megabosses have been somewhat of a fail simply because of the open world factor.

The question was more rhetorical than anything, but even on an instanced map there would have to be a limit. As to what that limit is, I suppose would be determined by how many players at a minimum are need to succesfully defeat the boss, or some other factor. That being said, guilds already have the ability to activate those events on the off times. Now if a single guild (with the exception of TTS and some of the other world boss guilds) was unable to fully man said events, they would have to bring in others, either randoms or entire guilds. And you still have the same issues. “Noobs” not knowing what to do, people tagging and waiting for loot etc.

Now if a guild wanted to active the event, and bring in other speficially for the fight, they can, and it is done, ask the zone to be cleared if needed, or ask that those not specificly there by invitation to please leave. I’ve seen it. Most people respect it, It’s very similar to how things are done with the guild missions if 2 guilds are trying to do the same mission.

Again putting those events into an instance may minimize interferance from others, but it would only serve to alienate players and is counter to the social gameplay that Anet has designed.
