Paying for past content?

in Living World

We don’t know if they will charge for season 1 or not. Hell, they haven’t even started devoting any resources to see if they even can. Let’s not get our panties in a bunch.

Personally, I could see season 1 being free to those that participated, and purchasable for those that did not. Thus logically following the model they have set forth. If they can even do it.

Amen!!

I like how many people are automatically assuming that Season 1 will be available through the journal at a later date TBD. The only this ever said about Season 1 and the Journal was 1) that it was not built with the journal in mind, 2) It won’t be available at launch of the journal, and 3) that they hope to add season 1 in the future. This implies that the open world mechanics of season 1 are incompatible with the mechanics of the journal and would require require an extensive reworking of all the content to make it compatible. Since we know nothing about season 2, and how its going to be presented, anything discussed on the matter is purely speculation at best.

As for the paying gems because you missed an episode? I don’t see it as a big deal. Many people have said before if content, past or future, were available for purchase on the gem store, they would gladly pay for it. Thats basically what this is. For those who are already convinced that Season 2 is going to be as bad or worse (in their opinions) than season 1, they forget that they don’t have to buy it OR play it. Many others are looking forward to it, and don’t mind having to pay $2.50 USD/convert gold to play if they missed it. Either way Anet has made their decision, it’s not going to break the game, the sky isn’t falling, and people will leave and more people will join, and life goes on.

100% World Completion

best solution: Turn off the WvW completion from World completion (you dont even need southsun cove as part of world completion so why wvw?)

or else:
1 – guest other server
2 – wait a week and hope you change from color
3- probably mentioned above my post

I can see why removing WvWvW from map completion would be appealing, I didnt see it as an issue when doing my completion. Sure it took awhile, but it wasnt horrible. Just played off times and had no issues.

However as far as guesting is concerned, guesting doesn’t work for WvW. Upon entering this WvW you and sent back on your home server. Unless they changed it since last I tried a few months ago.

How about a full dungeon tour, 1 path per dungeon, but only the “harder” paths that no one likes to run. (I.E. TA Aetherblade, HoTW 2, SE 2, etc.) as well as lvl 50 fractals. No fgs/ice bow, no consumable buffs, no armor repairs. (I would say no beserker gear, but that would mean that many people would have to buy a whole new set of gear so maybe not.) Fastest time AND fewest deaths in party.

edit: Also no skipping mobs/bosses.

LOL Thats awesome!

Of course, being a brainstorming session (in essence) I’m just throwing out ideas. Several of the ideas presented are certainly more thought out and more detailed, but that doesn’t make mine terribad :P

Taygus: You are correct

OP: From what I understand, the AR needed increases every 10 levels. While the current system looks confusing, it’s not really complicated to understand. I’ve certainly experienced no reward tier confusion, and never seen any reward tier confusion as far as the LFG is concerned. The only questions I’ve seen about it if the players personal reward level has an effect on lower level fractals. As as finding groups faster? it’d still take the same amount of time to post, or look in the desired level range of the LFG.

The current system allows for a quick assesment of how much AR is need for each tier. (i.e 20-29 requires at 15 more AR than 10-19).

Which sigil should I use for my Warrior's axe

Also sigil of Perception or Bloodlust for off hand might be usefull as well. Gain charges of power or precision for each kill, for a max of +250. And in WvW it’s +5 charges per kill, so 5 kills for a full stack, and I don’t think you need to have the killing blow, but a tag at the least resulting in a kill. I could be wrong about that though.

I have found doing WvW mapping with a small group, avoiding attacking, and using the /sit generally works to avoid being killed. Of course there will always be kittens who will go for the free gank. But mostly those in a small group, and solo are mappers as well. Occassionally they are havoc groups, but tend to leave you alone. Actually did a JP with members of the other 2 worlds once, It was difficult to avoid attacking, but we managed it, bowed to each other at the end and went about our merry ways. So it can be done, just takes caution and patience…

There is a race we dont really know a lot about. A race who have walled themselves in to keep them apart from the rest of Tyria.
Maybe we can think of them as Noah in his boat, saving the chosen ones from the apocalypse?
Thats why they didnt lift a finger to help when Scarlet flattened LA, they are waiting for the world to be destroyed so they can be the next superior race on Tyria, and they believed Scarlet was the start of that.
Because someone has promised this to happen.
Maybe the 6?

You must be refering to the Tengu. Although it is not fully known WHY they have isolated themselves, it is BELIEVED that after they returned to Tryia following Zhaitans awakening, they shut themselves up to avoid the wars and potential genocide that had occured in the past. Also after the defeat of Zhaitan, the Tengu might have a renewed interestest in helping to defeat the other Elder Dragons.

However there isn’t much known about their religious beliefs, although ancient Tengu held to an afterlife. But with the strong Japanese/Asian theme surrounding the Tengu, one can SPECULATE that they would hold a similar belief structure, which is more focused around spirituality, personal enlightenment and growth, than the worship of an actual Diety.

@OP

Great post!! Even if that goal for some people isn’t a Legendary, having an in game goal is a great way to maintain interest. Some other tips for “end game” would be closely following the lore and stories within the game its self. Just talking to NPCs reveal a LOT of insight to Tryia and how it works. Talking and listening to the NPCs during a DE can be vastly amusing. (Recently came across a DE and had to escourt a Priory group to explore a shipwreck and find Orrian artifacts, the leader was all serious about it, but the rest of the party just wanted to relax and have a drink. The party moaned and whined the entire time, and at the end, ended up finding a cask of a rare beer, irritating the leader, and the rest of the party celebrating.) Also some goals could include learning to solo a dungeon, or a fractal. Or gathering all the skins in the game, etc. There area a bunch of fun and rewarding things to do after level 80. Just having a goal helps break the monotony a lot, and keep you coming back.

Edit: Also check out the community events sub forums. Theres usually somethings going on in the world that are fun. Lilith also does some really fun things, like fashinable dungeon runs where everyone wears pink, or something. She has several threads about events shes doing. Or you can start your own event. Like a Norn dancing troupe touring Kryta doing shows, or somthing.

Still waiting for end game content

“End game” is really what you make of it. For some end game is crafting a legendary, or a full set of ascended armor. For others its soloing dungeons or PvP/WvW. Looking for something challenging to do and getting bored with farming dungeons, EotM etc? Try something along the lines of soloing Fractals with no armor, no utilities and only 1 weapon. I agree that the in game loot rewards are somewhat disappointing, but adding “end game” content is subjective at best. And one can almost guarantee that anything added will just be a zerg fest anyway.

In the meantime, get used to your chosen profession, find which weapons YOU like and their strengths and weaknesses. Also you can always jump into PvP at any level and play around with it to get more of a feel of what the various skills, utilities do, etc.

Not a bad theory. But who else is there that worships gods? The Charr basically want nothing to do with them after the debacle with the titans, the humans we know about, the Silvari are agnostic towards the 6, and tend to view the Pale Tree as their “god” (although it is revered, its not quite the same as worshiping a god, but close enough.) The Norn have their Spirits. The Asura have their Eternal Alchemy (which is more akin to the Force than anything IMO :P ). The Krait have their prophets, and its strongly implied that their Prophets are fake anyway. The Kodan have their one god, Koda. And Hylek, the sun.

Of course this isn’t ALL of the races, but it seem rather unlikely that another race will abandon their cultural beliefs in favor of following the human gods, even if they were “adapted” to that paticular culture.

There was a thread the day of the patch of a guy who lost Dusk for a few silver. It got deleted because it ‘discussed’ exploits.

This thread is on the opposite side of that, where a guy has gained a precursor for cheap. But it’s not deleted.

???

I think I remember that thread, and if I remember correctly it was posted BEFORE the patch went live so technically it was discussing exploits, as it had not offically been fixed yet.

With the fix, people who post a sell order for so low, not bothering to read the patch notes, or realize that it had been fixed really only have themselves to blame as the system is working as intended. Its not perfect, but it does work.

I think right now, the weapon sets and getting more comfortable with basic combat will be the best way to go. Then we can start working on various combos and skills and utilities, etc. But I agree that learning the phantasms and clones will be important, and that might be the next step.

All this said, as a married man myself my biggest piece of advice I can give is..

  • Offer help but only when she wants it. Don’t offer help if she doesn’t want it. If you think she wants help don’t suggest anything. Unless she does actually want you to suggest something in which case why haven’t you already. Whatever you do say, she’s not a moron, she knows already, or if she doesn’t know she can figure it out. At the point she can’t figure it out she’ll let you know, and you should explain the thing. But don’t go into to much detail because again, she’s not a moron. Of course when she doesnt understand what you’re saying it’s because you didn’t explain it well enough. USE MORE GOD kitten DETAIL!

Wise words. Sounds like everyday life :P

Before, all content was accessible. No gold or credit card required. Now, either gold or credit card is required.

This is a misleading statement. Before, content was accessible if you logged in during the release period. And it still will be. No gold or credit card required.

If you didn’t log in during the release period, not only could you not access it with gold or credit card, you could not access it, at all.

Can’t just make stuff up willy-nilly now.

You and everyone else is missing my entire point.

I get it that before if I didnt log in I missed it, and now the same thing if i dont log in., but I can pay 200 gems for it. I get it. I get they they are trying to encourage you to log into the game frequently. But does me logging into the game for 2 minutes to flag my account that I logged in do ANYTHING to improve the health of the game? If I logged into the game for literally 30 seconds and logged out, that has done nothing for the game, and I had no intent of playing the game AT THAT TIME. All this behavior has done now is add another tick to their player concurrency stats that said I was one more person that logged into the game….

My whole point is the DIRECTION, the decision they made. I simply disagree with the decision they made to place a money gate/gold gate/currency gate on content just because I was on a break from the game.

Its the decision that I completely disagree with. Just open it up to everyone at any time and avoid this entire discussion. Make even more people happy. Why close it off an kitten off a % of us?

Thats my entire point that people are missing here…its that they sat around a conference table and said “we’ll make them pay for it if they didnt log in during the time”.

So you’re upset because they went with an expansion-like method of delivering content to those who missed it for one reason or another? Just like EVERY OTHER MMO who does expansions? If you were to pick up WoW right now, you’d have to by at least 3 expansions at $50 EACH in order to be caught up on the story, and content. This isn’t any different, and ITS OPTIONAL. You arguement doesn’t really make sense. It’s a model thats been around for a long time and it works. And as an “ex-player” I don’t even see how this is an issue. You don’t play the game currently, and don’t plan on playing in the future so it doesn’t really effect you at all.

3. For a new person that comes to the game in a year or so, they are royally screwed.

How so? a new player coming to the game in a year or so, say during season 4, will likely see the past seasons as an expansion, and an optional one at that. It was the same way for me when I started playing GW1. I only had Prophecies and factions when I purchased the game. I understood that while there was no monthly sub to play the game, at some point I would have to pay to access the previous content through expansions. Anyone coming into the game at such a late point expects not to have everything given to them for free. Anyone who is coming over from WoW, or another sub based MMO is already very familiar with this. Plus they will still have access to any open world content that was added before they purchased the game. If they want to relive the story, and again it’s optional, they can, and probably will pay the money for it.

At least I win at something.

And yes, Im upset because…for a… free to play game…, If I leave for 3 months and come back, Id like to be able to play the content? Previously it was unavailable and that sucked. Now, if im gone for 3 months, the decision has been made that I either have the gold to spend on gems or I fork over real $$…they made this decision, it wasnt an oversight, or some technical thing. They made the decision to monetize my absence(using myself as an example). I find this to be shady.

I dont want to spend 20-30 gold one piece of content. If I miss 3 months, thats roughly 6 living story ‘episodes’, and roughly 120-150 gold. I dont have that kind of gold. Should I be forced to dungeon farm for gold to pay to see the content then?

If your game is free to play, make all content FREE.

People can no longer sit around these forums and say hogwash like “you can leave and come back and not worry about a thang”. Because you need to pay for missed content!

Just wanted to say that GW2 is NOT “free to play”. Its “buy to play”. The difference being that in a F2P game, you don’t have to spend money (initially) to play. But you are limited on the content you can access, low level cap, chat/messaging options, etc. If you want the “real” content you pay a fee and/or subscription. (i.e. SWTOR, NWN, DDO, etc.). In a B2P game. You buy the game once, and you have access to all that the game offers without ever having a need to purchase anything ever again. Much like your traditional video games.

With the addition of the story journal, as it’s been said many times before, IT IS 100% OPTIONAL. If you are unable to log in during the time that it is made available for free, you can either convert gold, buy gems, or buy it with real money, if you feel the need to have that content.
“Well I don’t have alot of gold, and I don’t want to farm/grind for it”
Well did you know that you can also obtain gems through achievment chests?
From the wiki: “As an achievement reward of 400 (gems) every 5,000 achievement points.”

Also you can still access the story portion of the events 100% free without spending any gold/gems/money by being in a party with a friend/guild member/PuG when they access the content. And any open world content will be accessible by anyone regardless if LS has been purchased or unlocked for free.

I don’t see why we, the players, should have any right to vote. The writers and designers, and the publishers do take what we say in game and on the forums as feedback, and hopefully, apply that feedback into their next project.

Do TV shows have an option to vote on what the next season is going to be about? Do writers take a vote on what their next book is going to contain? I’m pretty sure if GoT took a vote, you’d still have a huge cast of characters still alive. Dumbledore would still be alive, and Malfoy would have been killed in book 1. Even in this setting we are the audience. The only decision we have to is play or not. And unless you are on the board of directors, we don’t have any say at all. The fact that they listen and act is more then fair enough.

I agree if votes were allowed, you’d be able to solo Tequatl, and have a guaranteed legendary/precurser drop everytime. Everybody would automatically be given every skin, 10,000g and a pet Quaggen upon character creation. Beserker gear would be abolished, as well as rangers in general. You’d pretty much end up with people on mounts running around dueling each other and that would be the whole of the game.

That being said, you can craft, or buy, a full set of exotic, which is great for anything but 10+ level fractals. Or you can craft a set of ascended armor. Which dungeons should you do? All of them. Do the story modes for all the dungeons, do all the paths, either with your guild, or via LFG. Dungeon runs are a great way to earn money, which you’ll need if you are going to craft ascended armor, and your gear can be bought with dungeon tokens.

Gear works like this. It has 3 different stats that provide bonuses to your current stats. Your traits, along with your gear set, is what makes up your “build”. For example, you want to do maximum damage possible. You would be better going with a gear set that provides +power, +precision and + Ferocity. (aka Beserkers), rather than a set that provides +toughness, +condition damage, +healing power. (aka Settlers). And assigning your traits accordingly, (i.e. 6 in power, 6 in precision, 2 in ferocity.)

Here is a list of gear by stats that might help you decide what gear set you want to get to best suit your paticular play style.

New player, mesmer. Ins and outs.

Hello,

My wife recently started playing GW2, and decided to roll a Mesmer as her first character. She has 0 previous MMO experience. She is getting a hang of the basic controls and combat, but is totally clueless as to the various functions and skills of a Mesmer. I’ve been playing for awhile and am doing my best to help her out, but I have no experience with a mesmer either. (My main is lvl 80 warrior, and I have a 80 necro and a 35 ele.)

What are some things she needs to know as a mesmer? (currently lvl 5). It’s WAY too early for builds, gear, etc. Just the basic mechanics of the profession to help her on her way. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

I’m having the same “issues” with my wife who recently started playing. The hardest part for her is the controls. I’ve read that rebinding q/e to a/d for strafing is extremely helpful, as she won’t be trying to turn and can use the mouse to change direction. Anyone have any experience with this?

[Suggestion] Maps in hard mode - lvl 80 only

I don’t see how a “hard mode” could be implemented easily. You’d have to have a whole NEW mega server system with a new set of servers for each zone for hard mode. Basically double what they have now just to have a “hard mode”. GW1 was able to pull it off simply because it wasn’t an MMO and each of the maps was instanced to the player/party. However I do think a dungeon “hard mode” would be much easier to implement and be better than having open world PvE “hard mode”.

This seems to be a problem with zerk builds at the moment. Whether equipment is a contributing factor, I’m not sure, but the fact that there is gear that boosts three offensive stats simultaneously – all of them tied to a single mechanic – is an indicative of imbalance.

And this is where you’re wrong. The trade-off is that you have no defensive stats.

A hybrid party of Knight’s and PVT players can eat up a lot of mistakes in an encounter and still win. A full zerker party usually wipes on the second mistake. That’s the trade off right there.

The real issue is people being mad because other players can play better than they do and can clear content faster.
That’s why you see all this zerker hate – because some players ( that are also very vocal on the forums) feel they need to hate other more experienced players.

They don’t really see the logic behind zerker.

If a player can zerk encounter x they’ll go – that player is cheesing because he’s going zerker in content x and it’s easy.

They should maybe realize that in order for that player ( or party) to go full zerker in content x they must have done it maybe dozens if not hundreds of times until they can do it in their sleep ( that’s how it is with me and a lot of the content).
Of course they deserve the ability to wear zerker and clear faster – they’ve put a lot of time into that content and know it by heart.

But players these days don’t want to change so that they fit in the game, they want the game to change to suit them.

I am going to have to disagree. The issue isnt people being mad at zerker builds because they are better players, and can clear content faster. This issue is the beserker community in general are kittens and feel they need to belittle and insult any who cannot play at their level. Its not about being kicked from a zerker only speed run LFG because you don’t meet the requirements, its about them coming into any welcome LFGs and insulting and kicking people who are not up to their level of play. Its about any time anyone aaks for build suggestions, and the intent is clear that the one asking the question wants something with More survivability in gear And being , met with “you should only play beserker. Period. Anything else sucks and shows that you dont know how to play the game. GTFO noob and l2p” attitude. If people want to tear through content, fine more power to you. If others want to take their time, enjoy, try different strategies than stack and burn, fine more power to them. Just stop being a jerk about the play style you prefer and let others do their thing goes for both sides of the aisle, but in my experience the most offenders lie on the beserker side.

No it doesn’t make sense. You are talking about having to go to a completely different company in order to access a TV episode you missed when it aired. In GW2’s case, we wouldn’t be going anywhere else to purchase the living story content we missed.

It’s pretty common for cable and satellite boxes to have DVR capabilities so you can set it to record TV shows and watch them at your convenience if you’re not going to be able to watch it when it airs, or if you want to rewatch a favorite episode. You may pay an extra little bit on your monthly bill to be able to do that, but you aren’t charged (as far as I know) each time you use the feature.

Your analogy doesn’t work here, because you need to actually play the content first before you can access it later for free. It would be akin to having to watch the TV episode first, record it, and then you can rewatch it later on. That’s oldschool, before automatic DVR technology. On the other hand, if you completely missed the LS content/TV show, you can pay to have a chance to watch it for the first time.

you also got it wrong !

you only need login during those 2 weeks to unlock it.
nowhere does it say you need to play it for it to unlock lol.
you can login unlock it, than go to the beach, comeback later and still play that content whenever you feel like it.

Don’t forget turin is making a beach in his backyard so we can go there after we log in.

Yupnjust log in, load up a character, quit, and you’re good to go. Its all in the blog….

Its only an issue for those of you make it such. Every update/patch/new items in the gem store and the forums erupt with people crying “this is going to break the game!!!!” Then a month goes by and all is well and the game is doing better then ever. Yeah so, Anet and NCSoft are trying to increase profits. And this is bad because….? They are a business, that’s what businesses do. Its not going to cause the open world content to suffer, its not going to cause story steps to suffer. People will pay for what they want to play and have a good time and not think twice about it. People will still claim the sky is falling, but the game will continue and will thrive. For those who dont like it, maybe you should consider moving on?

Or you can you know, login one time during the two weeks that event is available and have it unlocked for free.

It is unlock forever, for the account.

I just told my kids.. we cant go on holiday this year or maybe even next cos otherwise I gotta pay out another 200gems to catch up with LS season 2 …

EDIT – Problem solved, I just dug a big hole in the garden, filled it with sand then made another hole next to it.. just waiting for it to rain some more to fill the second hole up and create the perfect beach in my own back garden – they will never notice!

Well I guess this is their way around developing expansions and hiding the criticism of temporary content…

Really…?The 5 extra bucks you will have to spend or the 3 extra days of gaming to raise the in-game money is enough to make you feel you should not go on holiday…Really?

Pretty sure he was being sarcastic…apparently it went right over your head. You must be sheldon cooper….

As long as you explain to your kids why GW2 is more important than going to the beach, they’ll understand. And a good parent would bond with their kids by forming a family only Guild! Get them all their own accounts, and you can slay dragons together.

Of course!!! As soon as my little one is old enough (hes 2)I total am planning on doing that! (Seriously not just gw2, but pathfinder, the legend of zelda, etc.) Just need to convince the wife to play. Thats the hard part.

I still don’t get why a new player jumping in in the middle of season 2 is being punished. It much like the TV analogy given earlier. If you started watching, say Game of Thrones because it happened to be on when you were switching through channels, heard about it from friends, in the middle of say season 3. We’ll you’ve missed Seasons 1 & 2. You shouldn’t be given the boxed DVDs of past seasons for free, just because you didn’t watch them. No if you enjoyed the last half of season 3, you’d be inclined to spend the $75 for the DVDs of Season 1 and after watching that, buy the DVDS for season 2. But wait! While you were getting caught up on Seasons 1 and 2, assuming you didn’t marathon them, season 4 has started. But you didn’t get to see the first half of season 3. And it’s not available on DVD yet! OH NO! But wait!! You can buy each episode of season 3 for $2.50!? AND the episodes of season 4 for the same price!? Praise the six!!! I don’t need to drop a bunch of money at once to have access to EVERY EPISODE!!!. Whats that? I get a free DVD copy of the newest episodes for just turning on my TV!? GOLLY GEE!!! THAT SURE IS SWELL!!

New players coming in will have no idea of whats going on yes. BUT they are not obligated to to buy anything. If they jump in with the story, find they like it, they have the option of buying each episode for a small price, they can start with an episode or 2, and if they like it, they can buy more with RL cash money, or by converting gold. It won’t turn away new players. In fact if they are coming from other games with expansion models, its just the next logical step after buying the game initially. IT’s something they are already familiar with and half expect from the start.

All they need to do is log in while season 4 is going on and it’ll be in their story journal. I mean, I’m assuming they’re logging in to “watch” previous seasons, right? It’s not like they’re going to be perpetually behind.

Edit: Oh, that’s what you were saying. When you said you don’t get why a player is being punished, you meant how. Sorry I misunderstood.

Yeah my bad.

It’s a lot like watching television in that you can watch (and record) an episode for free when it airs. If you miss it, you can buy the episode off iTunes later. Does that make sense?

I feel this is fine, and 200 gems is not a lot, it is an annoying amount in that you can’t actually buy 200 gems with real money directly, or as I recall any multiple of 200 below the 4000 gems pack. But with the currency conversion it shouldn’t be that big of a deal.

In general I think this is a very reasonable business model.

Pretty sure you can buy 800 for 10 dollars or euros. That would be a multiple of 200 (200 × 4 = 800).

Also, and not related to the quote above, it’s funny people are commenting on how new players or others would have to buy Season One if and when it became available, when there were sooo many comments on how worthless it was. Why would people ‘need’ or even want to buy something deemed so worthless? Just seems amusing to me.

I feel the same way…I find it amusing also.

Just to be clear it was never said that season 1 WILL become a part of the Living Story journal:

“Also, because Season 1 of Living World was not built with the Journal in mind, it will not be available in the story Journal on initial launch when Season 2 begins. We do hope to add Season 1 to the Journal in the future.”

Edited for clarity.

That being said, I can see Season 1 being sold as a bundle later one or stay with the current 200 gems/episode. With all the negative feedback about season 1, I don’t see them ever really going through with implementing it, and IF they did I don’t see hordes of people rushing to get them. Just my thoughts.
