Kittens and censorship

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

So as many of you know, whenever a perceived inappropriate word is being used in a forum post, the censorship hammer smashes the bad word into “kitten.” For example, this word will become kitten nal.

This is a formal petition that for all future censorship instances, bad words instead be changed to “skritt” rather than “kitten.” That is all.

I thought that petitions were not allowed in the forums?

And people who dont see an issue with said system are perfectly ok to come here and say so.

It might not be a big enough click of the game population that agree with you to be worth the cost the rewamping of the system would cost.

I’m sure they are. But why not add something contributive that can be of use, instead of repeating what the past users have said that the system is perfect and nothing is wrong?

If a better system was introduced, I can guarantee you the same people would be claiming the change was excellent and nothing need change, again. People go along with this because it’s what we have. Yet they don’t have any reasons for why the current system is superior to a better possible system. All it takes is a little intelligence and imagination.

What do you consider a better system?
Give more TC’s? Eliminate TC’s altogether and make skin changes for free?
It seems to me, and many others, that the system as is is fine. TC’s are abundant, and unless you are changing out your look multiple times a day on multiple characters, there should be no reason one shouldn’t have enough TC’s to get the perfect look they want.

Official Feedback Thread: Episode 3 -- A Crack in the Ice

My thoughts on the episode.

-I liked the new map. However, the meta event was weak and felt disappointing. Defending the fires was WAY too easy, and the champs felt way underpowered (was using a condi necro).

-The story was great! Although the Ice Beast fight was initially confusing as heck. It took me a bit to realize that it was essentially the Mai Trin cannon fight all over, and that all you needed to do was dodge. Once you were able to actually hurt him, he went down super fast. What really confused me, was how randomly the scroll just appeared in the middle of the fight… In the end though it was still a great chapter

I thought I accidently either salvaged or tossed in the toilet the rifle precurser. I noticed I had the skin unlocked in my wardrobe, and nearly had a heart attack…..
Turns out there was a PVP rifle that shared the same skin (back when PvP weapons were a thing)

I don’t see them as an obstacle no. More of a benefit really. But I can see the desire to have it be character only.
It wouldn’t be a bad idea to have the option as well as account wide guilds.

If anything it comes down to guild policy. I suppose in the application process the guild in question should consider just the character instead of the account.

The Necromancer and why it sucks

in Necromancer

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

“1. They need to hit things to succeed.”
Which class doesn’t?
This isn’t a necro specific trait, but rather one that is inherent across all classes, and a fundamental principle behind the game in general. In order to defeat an opponent you need to hit them.

“2. Necros are designed to be hit.”
Yes necros can take some punishment, and be able to use that to their advantage. How is this a bad thing? It’s a integral part of the class mechanic. In fact, with certain traits, the more damage you take, the more powerful you become.

“3. Blocks > Blinds”
I disagree. While blocks can be useful, blinds also serves their purpose. A well timed blind can render a powerful attack useless and without the cost of forgoing an attack skill. For Necro, I would much rather use blind to negate an attack than block one.

“4. It’s the SLOW class”
It is slow. But the longer the Necro is in the fight, the more powerful they become. But it takes time and skill to survive that long. That slowness makes for great defense, as they can take the punishment, while ramping up their power.

“5. Not an attrition class.”
It can be. It depends on what specs you are playing. A defensive condi necro is most certainly an attrition spec. A bursty power spec is not. It largely depends on what you play, and how you play it.

“6. Lifeforce / Shroud is the worst and laziest designed class mechanic.”
A mechanic that takes time to be able to use, and is quickly depleted. Sure it adds a bit of survivablity, but it also comes at a cost. I think it’s actually well done.

Overall, if you know what you are doing, and not playing a cookie cutter meta with little to no understanding of how it works, or how to play it, you’re going to be a force to be reckoned with. I have tried the meta builds, and they seemed lacking. In the end I made my own build and tend to do quite well. I can hold a point for a decent amount of time. Even when being focused, as well as control the flow of battle to a surprising degree. It just takes a bit of know how and watching what the enemy is doing.

Gaile,

Sorry to hear about that. Hope everything gets worked out for you.

However, I see a bunch of people on this thread playing the “blame game” trying to point fingers about how and why, etc. Instead, Anet, and the players, should be focusing on What happened, and what can be done to prevent it in the future.

I had a similar type of experience at work last night. I work as a security guard.
I received a call that someone was having access badge issues and couldn’t get into the facility. I allowed them access to the facility. Turns out, they had been fired. Which is a HUGE no-no. Long story short, I had followed our post orders (although I should have taken additional steps before allowing access). Now we need to re-examine our orders and create a new policy to avoid future happenings.
Anet needs to do the same thing. Find out what went wrong, and fix it. Either the agent involved blatantly disregarded the access control policy, or there was a misunderstanding in the policy process itself (as was in my case). In which case the policy needs to be revisited.

P.S. I did get wrote up, but still have my job

What is Anet's stance on P2P trading?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

pdavis.8031

For instance I have a sorta friend who has Spark that I’m wanting to buy from him but since I’ve played Eve Online I’ve grown to trust absolutely no one in any online game when it comes to anything currency related.

I know scamming is a reportable offense but I want to know if Anet would rectify the situation if things didn’t go according to plan.

I know of the gold limitation when you mail gold.

What’s our stance? No. Just no. Sure it’s possible. Sure, sometimes it works. But sometimes (often enough to be a highlighted concern) it does not. Which is precisely why the developers created the Trading Post. Safe, secure, and no one gets ripped off. (Ok, guys, no rude comments about the handling fee. I’m talking the straight up transaction here, and it is exactly that: straight up.)

With the advent of the TP, and with all the security that it gives, are you willing to risk a P2P trade? If you are, I sincerely hope that all goes well for you, that you get the item you paid for, and everyone is happy. If it does not, we will not and actually cannot get involved, for a variety of reasons that involve not indicting innocent players who may get caught, tangentially, in P2P trading. (If I have to go into details, I will, but I imagine someone else already has and in my haste to offer advice, I didn’t see it yet. )

So, for trading, I offer my oft-given advice: Choose wisely.

Why isn’t this stickied?
This question comes up often enough, and leads to the same discussion where everyone (generally the same people) say the same thing, with the same arguments.

As others have said, it depends on what you find “fun”.

As for fun, try looking at some of the RP guilds. Although I haven’t gotten too involved, it certainly adds a different aspect to the game that largely gets ignored.

Try setting a goal for yourself. Instead of focusing on leveling, try instead of working toward a particular build you want to have and the type of gear you’ll need. That way, by the time you reach level 80, you will be well on your way, if not already there. Then focus on something else and work toward that (i.e. getting specific masteries, specific gear, achievements, etc.). This way your play time is goal oriented, and more specific and not so much randomly wandering around looking for something to do.

Native Linux client

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

Linux is moving toward becoming a legitimate gaming platform with Steam support, and more and more games being developed for Linux. However, much of the problem lies in customer perception. Many people still think of Linux as cumbersome and difficult to use, or is for “computer nerds” and beyond the average user. Thus, with such a small market share (although it’s growing) it’s not financially feasible to develop a major AAA game for a small subset of players.
Another issue is, as mentioned, the amount of Linux “distro’s” out there. However, generally speaking, when people talk about Linux, they are referring to Ubuntu, unless specifically mentioned (i.e. Redhat people will say the use Redhat, or FreeBSD, or whatever distro they run). Not to mention that many brand name hardware components don’t make Linux/Ubuntu drivers for their gear. As such requires the users to rely on universal drivers, which don’t always work, or way underperform.

However, one CAN get GW2 to work on Ubuntu through Wine or PlayOnLinux (which is a front end for Wine). Last time I did it, there were some major graphics issues which made the game nearly unplayable (had this wired “fog of war” type effect where you couldn’t see much past 1200 range).
As much as I would love to have a native Linux port, it’s very unlikely to happen.

WvW Needs Better Advertisement

in WvW

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

While I do agree that WvW could use some changes to help encourage people to start playing this game mode, I am not sure the suggested changes would actually work.
In order to address the issue, and find out why more people aren’t jumping into WvW is to ask them.
Take me for example. I VERY RARELY play WvW.
“Why not” you ask.
“Thats a very good question, allow me to explain…”
1. The maps are too large.
If I jump into a map, and the zerg/blob is on the other side, and there are no WPs available (even when there ARE WPs available) I spent a min. of 5 minutes just running to catch up. However, if I happened to get ganked by a small roaming group, I need to do that same run AGAIN. By then, the zerg is in a totally different area, or even a different map. And it starts all over again. Spending much of your time running from point A to B and hoping you don’t get killed is a MAJOR turn off.

2. Endlessly flipping objectives
So I found a small group and we went into the enemies BL and started flipping camps. We’d flip and move on to the next. Right after RI expired camp would flip back. Rinse and repeat. It didn’t matter where we were, just endlessly flipping objectives only to hold them as long as RI lasted, then flipped back. It gets old quick.

3. No reason to defend.
With a large zerg running around, there was no point in trying to defend. Most forts/camps were never upgraded because by the time it was able to upgraded, it would be flipped. Occasionally some would try to defend the keep or garrison, but it almost always proved useless.

4. Not really able to solo
Sure one could solo (if they were good) but more often than not, you were just ran over by the train. So there really was no point.

5. No real motivation to play
Sure they have reward tracks now (didn’t when I was trying to get into it), but you can do the same in PvP (which has a lot more action and is 10,000 times more fun). Other than playing to get the Badges of Honor for certain things, there really is no real point. No story to follow, no special rewards, no nothing really.

6. Too expensive
In order to be half-way effective you need to buy a whole different set of gear, blue prints, food, etc. In order to get involved into the game mode I need to spend some gold? What? Sure you can use your PvE gear, but that generally tends to be berserkers and is difficult at best to play, or ineffective against more than one opponent.

This of course is my perspective, but one has to ask, how many other people feel the same, or similar, when it comes to WvW? Address these, and other non-WvWers issues, and perhaps WvW might be able to be saved. I would love to get involved more, but these issues just kind of ruin the whole mode for me.

Leather farming

You can’t really ‘farm’ anything in this game, except the gold you need to buy the mats you want

That’s not entirely true. Part of the reason prices are high is that people are following that same mentality. That you can’t farm. It’s easier/faster/better to farm gold, and buy. Which of course leads to more demand, and less supply, and higher prices. Instead of getting large quantities of supply, it’s coming in trickles, with people selling what they get from salvaging.
However, heavy bags are often the best for this sort of thing, and not just any heavy bag will do. Check the wiki you can find what bags give the most, where those bags are, and the drop rates of said bags. With a little bit of research one can effectively farm just about any crafting mat.

I’m referring to what most MMO players think of as farming. This game doesn’t have it.

And what would most MMO players think of as farming? Killing a bunch of a certain type of mob to get a certain type of desired drop that is RNG based?

When Will the PVE Berserker Meta Change?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

So basically the conclusion is anet may or may not be balancing around zerker gear, but one has to wonder if its more of the community then anything, I imagine that people have builds that work really well in pvp, wvw, or even pve they dont share and may not be listed in the meta, why would you share a build you made that works with strangers?

I think it’s simpler than that. A great majority of players don’t get on the forums or reddit and discuss such things. They are actually in the game playing and having fun. I know in my guild there were a large number of players who didn’t even bother with “finding the perfect build” but just played around with it until they found what they liked and went from there. So it’s not that they don’t want to share, but that they just don’t think about it.

When Will the PVE Berserker Meta Change?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

What amazes me, is that conversation is still going after 3+ years.
One of the main reasons that we got gear like Viper’s and Sinister’s is because of this very conversation. Zerk gear was WAY to prevalent, and conditions really kinda sucked. Which is also why they changed them, previously there was only a 25 stack limit. Which really hurt any condi builds, as condi damage would get overridden by incidental condis from a zerk build.

But in any case, Zerk has bene the PvE meta since forever. Part of the reason that it won’t change any time soon is that many of the “older” players have already invested in beserker gear on many of their toons, and see no reason to change. Plus, newer players coming in look to the older players and see berserker gear everywhere, so they follow suit, instead of finding out what works best for them.
The reality is that you can complete any open world content, and most dungeons (exluding raids) in whatever build/gear you want. I was soloing dungeons with an axe/axe valk warrior, and rabid necro (even after I was told that it would be near impossible because those didn’t output enough damage).

Race-Change Item in Gem Store?

Are there any plans to include a race-change item in the game and if not, can there be? With the hero point upheaval as well as requirements for other retcon items, its reasonable that we can now more than ever include this feature within the game.

I do not want to delete my main character, who I’ve had since the 3day Headstart on release, and I would gladly pay for one or two race-changes to solidify and diversify my account character list.

Thoughts on Race Changing?

This has been discussed at length many times. The short answer. No. The whole personal story bit, as well as many other logistical problem arise when trying to change race.

Tank + Healing Guardian Build

in Guardian

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

I’ve been running something similar with my guardian. But I went with staff instead of hammer. It’s REALLY fun to 2v1 in pvp (unless you are fighting 2 super bursty builds, but even then if you can time your dodges and blocks right you can stay alive for a surprising amount of time).
It also performed rather well in WvW in small group fights. In open world PveE though it’s essentially worthless in a group setting, but a bit more effective while solo as you can face tank for days

I use my build mainly in WvW as mentioned above but I do use it in PvE as well and it is far from useless because I actually keep all my teamates alive via providing heals and mitigations like blocks, reflects and protection while face tanking and still providing 60-70% of the damage a full Berserker build would.

Doesn’t happen often but on the few occasions my whole party wipes I’m still standing and end up soloing the boss or whatever it be. Pugs will be Pugs after all.[/quote]

True, but it also depends of what you are doing in PvE. Dungeons or small group content, yeah it can be a real advantage, but in a map like DS not so much. I agree though, pugs will be pugs, and sometimes having that extra healing in a fractal or dungeon just might make the difference.

Why pick bow over rifle?

It’s really an easy decision.
The bow can set things on fire.
How is setting things on fire a bad thing, and when would you ever need to NOT set something on fire?

too some bow rangers

I think a lot of it depends on what class is capping the point.
Necro: easiest bet is to pew pew from range, and decap after necro is dead. Necro’s are walking pincushions to LB rangers.
Thief: D/D Thief vs ranger in melee, thief has the upper hand. LB from a safe distance.
Warrior: Depends on the skill of the ranger, but a melee ranger stands a decent chance.
Ele: Just Run. Don’t even try to pew pew….
Guard: Depends on build, but a well played ranger MIGHT be a contender.
Engi: Engage in Melee, can hold their own fairly well.
Rev: ???? Haven’t fought against too many revs with my ranger yet.
Mesmer: Depending on build, pew pew is generally the best course.
Ranger: Depending on build, it could be an equal matchup, or could go horribly horribly wrong.

A lot depends on the enemy doing the capping, whether or not allies or enemies are on the way, and the skill of the player. But generally, pew pewing from a distance even at the loss of a cap, just might be the right play in certain circumstances. At the very least, it softens them up for an “easy” kill, and an easy decap.

Tank + Healing Guardian Build

I’ve been running something similar with my guardian. But I went with staff instead of hammer. It’s REALLY fun to 2v1 in pvp (unless you are fighting 2 super bursty builds, but even then if you can time your dodges and blocks right you can stay alive for a surprising amount of time).
It also performed rather well in WvW in small group fights. In open world PveE though it’s essentially worthless in a group setting, but a bit more effective while solo as you can face tank for days

Normal PVE in Berserker or Cavaliers?

Rabid. Condi necro in PvE is AFK easy mode. Plus it’s fun to play, at least in my opinion. plus great for farming, as you can quickly tag a bunch of mobs for loot.

Does gw2 not want money??

Making an item limited in availability somehow makes it more desirable. It’s part of our psychology. Which is part of the reason retail stores have limited time sales. They have the item in stock for forever, and it’s not moving much. Put it on sale, and they dramatically reduce their stock. Not only is it a cheaper price (although the company still makes out great on sales), but it’s suddenly in focus. Although the stocking and lower price isn’t an issue in a digital format, the effect is the same.
People do want Belinda’s Greatsword skin. But if it was always available I believe it wouldn’t sell as well. Put it on a limited time for availability, it not only calls attention to it, but it creates a sense of urgency, thus prompting those who might have been on the fence to decide to but it, because they won’t get another chance for a while.
So financially, if said item was always available you’d might have a couple dozen a month buying it. Whereas in a limited sale, you get far more people at once than you’d get over a 3 month period.
As for new players who have money to spend, they see the item in game and want it. Thus increasing anticipation for when said item comes out, resulting in even more sales.
It’s all carefully calculated to provide the best opportunity for sales.

I think that JS has a thing for recursion, and this was the only way he could include it in the game…

Treasure Hunter Achievement

Yes this achievement could use a buff in drop rates. I did it while the Sam event was still bugged. Which made it unbearably frustrating, and meant that you could only do it once a week if you were lucky. I did end up buying a few of the items though.
Although I already have it, a buff in drop rates would be nice for those coming after.

Best profession for playing PvE content?

Well necro is out of the question if you dont like pets.

Not entirely true. I play a necro and hardly ever use pets. (Although I will use Flesh Golem in certain situations, as having that extra knockdown can be helpful.)
Necro is also rather viable for solo play. Condi necros are great for taking on champs and the like solo. Just have to watch mechanics and not get too close.

Welcome!

First of all, if you are coming from WoW, please leave the trinity at the door. This game DOES NOT have a traditional trinity system (i.e. Tank, Healer, DPS). ALL classes can perform all of those tasks simultaneously (or build specifically for one thing) and some are better at others for certain types of things. (i.e. a Guardian CAN be a healer/tank, but also makes for a great DPS.) The trinity here is Support, Control, Damage.

Also, take your time to have fun and explore. You get EXP for just about everything, and leveling up is super fast and easy. Don’t be in a super rush to get to lvl 80 and miss out on how to play your character, and the awesome and amazing things that Tryia has to offer.

There is no “best class”. All the classes perform (nearly) equally well, and some do perform a little better in some areas than others. For example, I could build a necro that capable of being a decent support or a ranger that is good at damage. But overall the classes are (fairly) balanced, and the only REAL difference is mechanics and builds.

2 golds for daily is too much ! Its 730g/year

Don’t forget that the gold from doing dungeons was nerfed into oblivion, so the 2g a day, for those who bother with dailies, is a small increase, but still not back to pre-dungeon gold nerf levels.

Best condition build for pve?

I run something like this. It adds a lot of toughness for increased survivability, yet that increased toughness converts to extra condition damage with the Krait Tuning Crystals. The utilities are changeable for what the situation calls for. I like using epidemic in large boss fights with lots of adds. Also some of the skills can be changed, but Death Magic and Corrupter’s Fervor are critical. (it stack toughness, which again increases condi damage.

Check it out and let me know.

unblockable marks nerf plz

in Necromancer

Having staff marks unblock-able is the only thing keeping the staff in use.
(As previously said) if you are dying to staff marks, it’s not the marks problem, it’s you. They are highly visible and completely avoidable. The only time they MIGHT be dangerous is if you are fighting on a point and not paying attention to the necro well/mark bombing you in the point. Which again is a learn to play issue rather then an OP mechanic issue.
