HoT clarification

Let me amend this…

I called the FTC and told them is was going to sound strange because this is a video game.

They said it was not strange and that they actually get calls about deceptive business practices like this (and they said this IS a deceptive practice) often and pointed me to the Better Business Bureau in order to report this.

How exactly is this a deceptive practice?
You can file a complaint with the BBB for just about anything, but that doesn’t mean that they are in violation of anything.

So again, before we start jumping to conclusions, lets try to get more information.

Do we know for certain that they won’t release just the expansion for a lower price?

That is the current official word.

Key word “Current”. Again, we don’t have much information concerning the matter. Just that it’s on sale, and it’s $50 and includes the core game.

How is this a Deceptive/Bad Business practice?

They are advertising and selling HoT exactly as stated. However, there isn’t much more information. That doesn’t mean that they are doing anything illegal.

I get that many people are upset about this, but it’s because of a lack of detailed information. Thats why I am asking for clarification.
In a way it makes sense to package the core game and expansion as a single unit. It’s not unheard of. Games do it all the time. However, those same games also have an option to purchase the expansion as a stand alone.

But reporting them for packaging the expansion in this way is just silly, and really has no basis for doing so.

So as I understand it that HoT includes the core game. But I have some questions about that.

1. Does the purchase of HoT mean that I will be purchasing an additional account?
2. If one already has the core game, how will HoT be applied?
3. Will HoT be available as a stand alone? (just the expansion without the core game)
4. Will the core game included in HoT be a new build in which HoT will operate on? And if so will I be able to update my current game to that new build in order to play HoT? (meaning I won’t have to re-install the core game included with HoT)

I know right now there is a lot of confusion and a lot that we don’t know with the announcement of HoT on pre-order. Any clarification on these things will be great!!
Thanks!!

Or are we basing everything on just what they have in the store now as thats all that we are going to get?

It seems silly to assume that in order to get the expansion you have to buy a whole new account. So instead of jumping to conclusions why don’t we wait until we have some more information?

Ascended came out forever ago…
And yeah it takes awhile to craft, but then again it’s not “required” for anything other than high level fractals.

That argument was very weak even before that planned stat buff. Required? Yeah, it isn’t, but it sure helps a lot, and it offers significant advantage. Which will only get bigger now.
And before you’ll try to claim, that those that don’t like it should simply ignore it, notice that Anet, by increasing the difference, made clear that they don’t intend us to ignore it.

Dont get me wrong. Im not saying that its not better. It is. But as the OP stated, from the interview and the reddit thread, ascended isnt required.

As for significant advantage? I wouldnt call a 1-2% increase in effectiveness significant.
With this change it will increase the effectiveness to 2-4%. Which is still marginal by any standards. People seem to forget that a 5% or 10% increase in stats does not equate that same increase in effectiveness. (i.e. damage output, armor, etc.)

Is this change a treadmill? No not really. Will it cause ascended to be more sought after? Probably. Will it be game breaking? I’ll be willing to bet that within 3 weeks of it being implemented there will be VERY few who even notice a difference. And those will be the theory crafters, elite dungeon speed runners, and hardcore wvw duelers. (And by elite dungeon runners, i mean those who are setting legitimate records and compete for such things, not the wannabe “zerk exp 15k Ap speed run” people)

I want to hear why this change was made – you’ve completely reversed your position on tiers now.

How is this a reversal of position on tiers?
They aren’t creating a new tier. All the current ascended gear you have will be buffed accordingly. You don’t need to go get all new gear.
They simply are making it a bit stronger than it was. Along with all the other gear that is getting buffed.

go youtube their mmo manifesto. you’re wrong. gg

Are they adding a new tier?
IIRC they also said that ascended and legendaries were optional and not required, and thus was in keeping with their Manifesto.

So please show me where a buff to stats, and a 5% increase to ascended goes against their manifesto.

If I follow the ascended defender argument, it use to be that you don’t need it so the grind is ok. Now that it’s buffered enough to be more necessary, the argument is that you already have it.

News flash, I don’t have it because you said I didn’t need it.

And you still don’t really need it.
A 10% increase of stats does not equal a 10% difference in damage output.

IIRC it was something like a 2%-4% icrease in damage output, which isn’t much at all.

Ascended Armour now 10% difference, Thoughts?

in WvW

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

5% was tolerable because it’s still existent and can make a difference, the gap between players is possible to overcome. 10% is of course still possible, but it’s making it harder. Also, if you take 10% less damage and deal 10% more damage, then that would be more than a 10% differenc? Of course, this is just an example; I know that it’s not scaling like that.

Just for clarification, a 10% increase in stats does not equal a 10% difference in damage dealt, or 10% less damage recieved.

I know you talked about how it doesn’t scale like that, but this is a very important distinction.

As for how it will effect WvW? I don’t think there will be a noticable change. You might notice it most in 1v1 or 5v5 stuff, but in large ZvZ it won’t really be noticed at all.

Someone broke down the math:

Current Exotic Armor Stats:
315/224/224
Exotic Armor Stats + 30% (Projected):
410/291/291

Current Ascended Armor Stats:
329/235/235
Ascended Armor Stats, Exotic+5% (Projected):
431/306/306
Ascended Armor Stats, Exotic+10% (Projected):
451/320/320

The difference from 5% to 10% (what everybody is all worked up over) is about 20 main stat and 14 off stat. Not that big of a deal…

As far as specific builds, and what not, I think the general change of removing stats from trait lines will have more of an impact than a buff to gear.

You’re only allowed to care about BiS gear if it’s absolutely required to do the content.

It’s one thing to be concerned about a change to Ascended, and quite another to make the claim that Ascended is mandatory. That its forced to play in WvW, or dungeons. Or to claim that people will be unable to participate in the game unless they have full Ascended.

From my perspective, it is a treadmill : I farmed my Exotics, then a patch comes and new gear is here I need to farm.

From a stat value point of view, the ascended armors were so low value one might consider they didn’t exist. That new patch “fixes” that so in a perceptive sense, we just got handed a new set of gear upgrade to farm.

This might not be a perfect fit for the “treadmill” definition but it sure looks a LOT like it.

Ascended came out forever ago…
And yeah it takes awhile to craft, but then again it’s not “required” for anything other than high level fractals. Which means, that you can do EVERYTHING else in the game (including fractals) without having ascended gear at all.

A gear “treadmill” would be in that you would be unable to do dungeons/worldbosses/new zones/etc. unless you had Ascended gear.
This isn’t the case in any way, shape, or form.

They simply are making it a bit stronger than it was. Along with all the other gear that is getting buffed.

Which now forces you to get ascended to compete, especially in WvW. What if they nerf a build that you built an ascended set around?

It doesn’t “force” anyone to craft ascended in order to compete anymore that it already “forces” people to get ascended to compete.
Plus by now most people already have full ascended gear (at least those who are serious about “competing” in WvW).
Those only ones who are going to really care about it, are the min-maxers.

Either way, it still falls well within their position and philosophy of ascended gear.

I agree with Vayne.
However, much of the community already feels that Ascended is a “required grind” and that the stat diffference means that in order to be the most optimal you “MUST” have Ascended.

But a treadmill? No. The gear you already have will be buffed (supposedly) so you don’t need to go get another set.

It seems like many people are ignoring this. Or choose to believe that with the stat difference increase that Ascended will be “Required” to do anything anymore. Thus meaning that if you don’t already have it, you will need it to be able to participate in any group content and dungeons. I personally don’t see that happening.

I am not really sure on this but have there ever been class changes to adjust balance in PvE ? As far as I can recall they always “balanced” PvE by changing the encounters/Bosses instead.

There has been some.
Fiery GS nerf, Stability, Warrior Adrenaline, etc.
Although these effected PvP more than PvE, there still was a large effect felt in PvE.

Every change to a class is going to effect PvE and how its played. The PvEers seem to accept and adapt to changes quicker and better than PvPers.

In dungeons you’ll be dead weight and in boss events you are just a warm body.
The only useful thing you can do is rezz people with zerg gear.

That will change with the changes to conditions.
There is speculation that conditions may become the new meta. I am not entirely convinced, but conditions will certainly be alot more desirable then they are now.

I was wondering if pristine fractal relics will now be in the wallet can you still click on them to give 15 fractal relics – I have been doing this to get some quick 20 slot fractal boxes!

It sounds like they are getting rid of Pristine Relics, and converting them to just Fractal Relics.
“We’ve added more currencies to the wallet! When you log in after the update, the following items will be converted to currencies and stored in your wallet:
•Pristine Fractal Relics
•WvW Tournament Claim Tickets
•Geodes
•Bandit Crests

These items will be automatically converted to the new versions of the currencies when the character holding them logs in, so be sure to check each of your characters’ inventories.”

Which means they will probably remove the Pristine Fractal price and convert it to the Fractal Relic equivalent.

I agree. It just makes the wallet that much more cluttered.
Event items are temporary, and should be treated as such.

My biggest thing about the event items are having “odd” amounts. Not having enough to use them and be rid of them, and not willing to destroy them, because “There might be a need for them next year!” But thats more of a personal problem than anything….

Why do people bring up necros as if they were a strong condi class?

They may not be the strongest for condi, but they don’t have much else going for them. melee/ranged DPS is on the low side of things, and they have a ton of access to conditions in general. Without really trying.

Also condi necro (at least to me) feels more natural, and like the class is best suited for it, rather than condi builds of other classes. But thats just me.

I can only speculate on whether or not condis will become the new meta or not. However, I do believe that they will become a serious contender for meta.

I also feel that this might actually bring necros closer, if not into, the meta as well.
Granted they still will lack group utility (which makes them shunned in dungeons), but with the amount of condis, and condi damage they can bring, it will certainly help their cause.

Get Rid of Stacking.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

Stacking is not an exploit, it is a cheese. It is the use of an unskillful tactics to employ maximum damage through minimum effort and maximum chance for survival. It is like using that one combo attack in a fighting game that you know your opponent can’t defend against and doing nothing but it until they die. But in this case you don’t even have to know a combo, you just have to stand in one place.

Also, using reflect to reflect is not unconventional. It is the literal definition of conventional. It is using a thing specifically in the way it was meant to be used.

I’ll concede the reflect aspect. However, Cheese cannot be considered an exploit.
Do I agree with stacking? Not really. Do I use stacking? Sure, because I just want to get done with the dungeon and don’t care enough to fight it.
But if using a tactic that is “Cheese” is cause for concern, and demands that Anet take steps to avoid it, what about “cheese” builds?
Do turrets need to be removed because a turret engi is"cheese mode"?
Do MM necros need to have minions removed?
What about hambow/shoutbow?
Rangers in general?
Mesmers?
Etc.

The problem doesn’t lie in that the game allows for stacking, or that AI is designed in such a way that stacking makes the most sense. It’s that some people feel that these prescribed ways are THE ONLY way to play. But that isn’t the case. The game is designed with PHIW in mind. But people feel that they cannot play how they want, and instead must conform to the methods/builds/play styles that are widely accepted as the most effective. Is this a development/mechanical issue? Or is it a social issue?
It seems that the players themselves are really to blame for stacking, the zerker meta, zerging, etc. They also forget that one isn’t required to do things according to the “meta”.
Go. Forge your own path, play your own game, and have fun. Don’t bow down to those who tell you that you must do XYZ. You’ll live longer and be happier.

Morfedel:
So using an enemies strengths and weakness against it is an exploit?

In your Lupi example, you are using a legitemate character ability, doing what it designed to do against an enemy who is using a reflectable attack.
This is an exploit?
No it’s using the built in game mechanics in ways they are meant to be used, in situations where using them is valid.

An exploit would be if you lured Lupi into the wall, and because of a bug/glitch he was unable to hurt you, thus allowing you to AFK auto attack him until dead.

The first uses the game mechanics/abilities in unconventional ways, but not taking advantage of bug/glitches/faulty coding.
The latter abuses faulty codes/bugs/glitches to the players advantage.

IIRC there was a glitch/bug that was abused to get precursors or something. It was discovered and a mass ban took place. This is an exploit.

Stacking… is effing boring, and to be completely honest, brainless. It requires no real tactics, no thought of any kind. It doesn’t make encounters fun, it makes them lacking in challenge, strategy, and requires no real effort at outplaying the enemy.

Someone else said it earlier in the thread, but I’ll say it again.
Stacking is a legitimate tactic and strategy. Armies all over the world, going back to the days of the Romans, Greeks, Persians, etc. and even today, have used “stacking” at some point or another. The idea was to pack close together for better protection, as well as concentrated fire power. Just because “IT’S SUPER EFFECTIVE!!” doesn’t mean that it’s in anyway broken. Even if in some way, some how, stacking became impossible in GW2, within a week the players would find the next single most effective method, and that would become the norm. Until people started complaining that the “New stacking” was boring and braindead and needs to be removed in favor of a play style the OP enjoys.

Spectacular! Why didnt I think of that ! rolls eyes

Seriously, look at other mmo high level encounters and then this stacking issue, and tell me you actually think this is a superior way to play a game.

I never said anything about it one way or another. I was poining out one of the many threads that bring up the same topic, as well as the general responses to such threads.

As for other MMOs and high level encounters, just this: This isn’t other MMOs. THIS. IS. GUILDWARS!!!!! (Sorry couldn’t resist :P)
In any event, the game mechanics at the most basic level allow for stacking. Some like it, other don’t. Some understand why/when stacking is better, others just do it because thats how they were taught.

Should Anet fundementally change one of the core tenants of the game because a few people don’t like stacking?
Or should those who don’t like stacking, understand that stacking isn’t needed, teach the community a “better” way?

Good times. Wonder if we’ll ever see them again.

Or even better, good loot. lol @ useless MF.

Define “good loot”

While leveling you are almost constanly finding good loot. That is loot with better stats than what you are currently wearing. At level 80 though, you can fully gear out your character in exotics through purchasing them. Exotics as drops are VERY rare. If you are counting on gearing up solely through drops, you are chasing a pipe dream.
The system was designed that way.

People are always complaining about “bad drops”. And bad drops referring to stuff that isnt worth much on the TP. However if those things dropped more frequently, then prices drop and beco e next to worthless. Then we are back in the same place saying loot sucks.

There’s no question about whether or not the dungeon community is atrocious, it goes without saying; everyone I talked to in the game, when on the subject of dungeons, says they avoid them because of the community…

I only do dungeons. I pug 99% of the time, on an engineer. I have no problems, and people are nice. The dungeon community provides helping guilds, guides, community record keeping, other advice when needed.

Everyone I talk to in game says they love dungeons because of the community. There’s no question about whether or not the dungeon community is awesome, it goes without saying.

Begging your pardon Nevets, but your personal experience isn’t going to magically invalidate the 100 threads about how elitist and generally crappy the dungeon community is. How long has it been since you had a 0 acheivements newb in the dungeons?

His experience, as well as mine, dont negate the 100s of threads about it.
Its well known that the forums only represent a small portion of the players as a whole.
We have a great community here, dungeons and otherwise.
Personally ive been only kicked out of 2 or 3 dungeon parties my entire gw2 career. Ive run hundreds of dungeons.
Granted there are mean people, people who only want certain types of players, but by and large the community is rather laid back.
No one comes on the forums to say how awesome that pug group was, or how many successful fun runs they’ve had. Just the bad ones.
So if you consider the 100s of threads, from say a generous 10% of the games population,
That still leaves a very very small percentage of the community as a whole.

OP:

Thats not fun. BTW what class are you using?
For whatever reason (valid or otherwise) some people absolutely refuse to play with certain classes (i.e. ranger and necro) in dungeons.

If you are a ranger or necro, many people kick on sight. You could happen to be the the absolute best player in the entire game, but they just see those classes and are like: “Nope!”

Hey Pdavis, thanks for the response. I play a warrior. Honestly, one guy in the game gave me something that might be some insight, he said when you join a party, they can see something about your “acheivements” or “stats” or something, and that might have to do with the instakicking. The problem is, if a large portion of the community is this petty… at times it makes me wonder what’s the point in playing, except logging in to solo occasionally… and the problem with that is, single player games do solo best. Heck even the friends I made rarely want to group, they’re usually off doing their own thing most of the time. Most of my mmorpg days was back when it was mainly geeks and nerds that played them who had intelligence and social skills, I’m starting to think the demographic has changed from that to “trailer trash” if you will; esp. on FTP games. Oh well. GW2 has it’s moments at least.

It very well could be the achievment point. Thats the only thing visible to the party. Even if groups don’t post an AP requirement, most groups that simply state “Px” generally are looking for meta/zerk/AP/EXP people in their parties.

If you are just starting in dungeons, your best bet would be to start your own LFG stating you are fairly new, and Any Welcome.
Any Welcome groups usually fill very fast, and they aren’t picky about AP, class, experience etc. Although you still get a few people who join who are actually looking for speed runs/meta parties and get upset when the run isn’t as “efficient” as it could be.

300 gold for Mystic Forge Precursor Gambling?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

My experience with the Mystic Forge hasn’t been the greatest. I was buying exotics for a little bit, but getting nothing in return. So now I save up mats from playing and craft rares, and toss in rares from drops. That has shown to be better for me in terms of MF output. Got 1 precursor (granted it was the harpoon and not worth a whole lot) But I get some cool exotics from time to time.

Save your money. Toss in rares, and cheaper exotics from drops. You’ll be better off.

Variable stats for ascended stuff

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

One thing that rarely, if ever, gets mentioned in ascended stat swapping threads.
Which T6 mat gets used?

For beserker, you need powerful blood to craft the beserker insignia/inscription and multiple of those to craft the ascended version.
So fi I was going to craft ascended, that was stat swappable, why would I pick the mats/prefix with the highest cost? (i.e. Powerful Blood). Why wouldn’t I just use Powerful Venom sacs? They are the cheapest of the T6.
But then what happens to the T6 market? (And subsequently the T5, rare/exotics/legendary/etc. markets?)

It would have a dramatic impact on the economy just doing that. Even changing the recipe itself would do that.
No. Ascended level gear should not be stat swappable. Reserve that for legendaries, weapons and armor if introduced)

They aren’t “losing gold” buy not selling it. They just aren’t making gold. (There is a big difference).

It’s like saying you are losing $47 million dollars because you didn’t buy a lottery ticket.

If I craft 50 rares from mats I have gathered, I could either sell them or throw them into the mystic forge, if I throw them into the mystic forge and get nothing for it I’m 50 rares poorer and can’t sell them anymore when I need gold -thus I’m poorer.
But gold sink usually means that gold is drawn from the economy which it isn’t directly in case of the MF.

Thats one way to look at but. But it hinges on could. A possibility. A choice. You crafted 50 rares, and chose to throw them in the forge instead of selling them. That doesn’t make you poorer. You never gained the money to lose from doing that.
Becoming poorer/losing money implies that you gained money first. Its an item in your inventory that really holds no value until you actually sell it. If I have 100g, and 4 rares. I toss them into the forge. I still have 100g. I didn’t become poorer, as I still have the same amount of gold.

Of course you could be losing money if you are buying the mats to craft in the first place. But crafting from what you’ve gathered buy playing, or using drops, isn’t the same as losing money. It doesn’t cost anything to do it that way.

TL;DR

Removing the MF would be a really bad idea, and have unforseen catastrophic effect on the economy as a whole.

The TP would be filled with a bunch of items no one really wants to buy, (Why would anyone buy lvl 80 rares in bulk anymore?) and because no one is buying them from the TP less gold is being removed from the game (which leads to other thing to horrible to contemplate).

However, I do agree that the MF is primarily a material sink. Whether it’s tossing in rares/exotics for a precursor, upgrading materials, or making a Gift of whatever.
Sure people do buy stuff off the TP to throw in the forge, but that is not a requirement. There are also many others who just craft what they have and toss those into the forge. They aren’t “losing gold” buy not selling it. They just aren’t making gold. (There is a big difference).

It’s like saying you are losing $47 million dollars because you didn’t buy a lottery ticket.

How many of those 7k-10k hours are spent AFK? Like they log in play a couple of hours, leave it on go make dinner, watch a movie, play another game, sleep, whatever, and then come back?

Even if you average say 10 hours a day, that means on some days you are playing less than 10 hours, and sometimes more. I just find it very unlikely someone spends 8-10 hours a day actually playing the game.

I personally don’t believe that DE2.0 has really earned a title yet.
The 2 groups, Edge of Steel, and Dragonspawn’s Destiny had already had renown and done great feats before forming into Destinys Edge.

The members of the current group are still earning their “keep” and have not yet attained the status of the heroes of DE.

OP

It sounds like you joined the wrong room. Instead of looking for a specific room to play in, just click “Practice”, “Unranked” or “Ranked”. It’ll automatically put you into a queue. I suggest start with “Practice”. It allows you to get more of a feel of whats going on. Then move to “Unranked”. You can always try to form your own group too using the LFG tool.

Most of those room are private rooms where people want to do very specific things. With the tag [daily] more than likely it was a room set up for people to farm their PvP daily achivements, buy allowing the other team to win with the class of the day. Taking a point like that interfers with that.

Good luck!
