I got on, and as a heavy salvager i found it awesome! Granted the cost and the savings may not be worth it. However, the time convinience and inventory space makes up for it. I like having the 1 slot instead of the 10 I needed with the other kits. Even the mystic kits. I would get it while it’s on sale. If they ever come out with a better quality one, I’m definetly going to get it. It made my life so much easier.

There is no algorithm.

Do you even know what an algorithim is ?

In mathematics and computer science, an algorithm is a step-by-step procedure for calculations. Algorithms are used for calculation, data processing, and automated reasoning.

How can the currency exchange set a price without using an algorithm on the raw data ?

By saying it’s set by supply and demand, ANET are saying they are using some algorithm. They just aren’t saying what it is.

Yes I understand what an algorithm is. However saying that they are using an algorithm implies that the system is controlled by Anet. While I agree that there is formula (which would be a better word) to determine the exchange rate, the fact is that when more people buy gems with cash, it creates a form of inflation of gems, thus increasing the exchange rate of gold to gems. Due to the fact there isnt an infusion of gold into the game other than what can be produced in game. The gem to gold conversion artificially creates gold, which would result in gold becoming less valuable. Thus requiring more gold for gems.

The only way to really combat this is to have the entire game population stop buying gems with cash and only use in game gold for gems for at least a couple years to achieve some sort of equilibrium.

Edit: I would guess the formula would look something like this
supply and demand Its near the bottom and explains it quite well actually.

Making GW2 a bit more like GW1

I like some things about GW2, but I liked GW1 much more.

On the flipside, though, GW1 felt lonely as heck sometimes, what with the PvE areas being instanced. If you don’t party up with people that have the exact same objectives as you, you’re pretty much stuck by yourself, save for whatever AI heroes you take along, and they’re not very good at striking up a conversation.

GW2 feels like an MMO to me. GW1 only felt like an MMO in towns (excluding PvP). Outside of towns, it was basically a single player game, to me at least. That is, when I wasn’t playing with my bro.

Thats because gw1 wasnt an mmo. Guild wars 2 is. There is a big difference between an mmo and an rpg.

Putting it in an instance would classify it as a raid. But then how many are allowed in an instance? Same as a full map? You’d still have the exact same issues. Players joining instance not knowing what they are doing, not listening to instructions, trolling, or not actively involved in the event, just tagging and waiting for loot. It wouldnt really solve anything. Plus it goes against anets view of open world events. If you want raids there are other games for that. Guild wars 2 isnt one of them. It was designed that way on purpose.

Is the gold to gems rate fair in gw2?

pdavis.8031

Is the rate fair ?

That’s a very good question. If the gem<>gold exchange used buy and sell orders like the rest of the trading post, I’d call it fair because I understand how that would lead to a fair value.

But the current algorithm ?
I have no idea how it decides what price to set. I have no data about how many gems are held by the currency exchange over a long period of time.
Maybe it is fair. Maybe it sets the price a bit too high. Maybe it sets it a bit too low. We don’t have enough information to know.
A better question would be: Does ANET know if the algorithm of the currency exchange is fair ?

There is no algorithm.
“ArenaNet will set the initial exchange rate for gems to gold when the servers first open for headstart, but after that the rate will fluctuate based on supply and demand of the players using the Currency Exchange. The gems and gold players get from the Currency Exchange are supplied by other players, not ArenaNet.”

This is from the devs. It is the ratio it is at because of the decisions of player, and people buying gems with cash.

Edit: This is aslo talked about in another thread, same topic.

Already going to look into it, but if I remember it should be off. But that doesn’t change the fact that there are so many spell effects and other things going on in the events or zerg that you can’t even see your own character.

Unless I am in a 100 V 100 – I don’t have many issues – the Anti-aliasing is a huge hog of resources.

Also this game is a huge CPU hog (single threaded too). Make sure you have many background items that are normally running turned off. That is the biggest issue not the GPU.

Yeah, but I’m on a 5 year old laptop…not the greatest, but it works well, just not in large groups with lots of things going on.

I totally agree on everything. I’m just confused by what the OP is wanting. In his first post he says “Many people can not run them due to fps issues.” and then follows with “I’d argue that by keeping these events in the open world you aren’t being fair to the people who take their time and resources to hold the hands of people who don’t know how the event works.”

It seems he doesn’t like the fps drop and lag issue, and doesn’t like that there are noobs playing the events. And because of these things the mega boss events need to be thrown out and made into “raids”.

However there will always be noobs in such events. Everyone starts out as a noob. Thats how it works, and thats ok. A noob doesn’t think “ooo a huge dragon event! wait, before I go in I better go read the wiki, watch the you tube videos, and walkthroughs, and retrait to x, y, z, Switch my gear and weapons before I do this”

A “noob” thinks: “oooo cool!! a big dragon! Lets kill it!! and theres lots of people here so it must be fun!”

So it’s not an issue of the mechanics of mega bosses, as it is a hardware problem. I too experience FPS drops and lag, but if there was a way to turn off particle effects that would help, or only show the models of the people in your group. Otherwise mega bosses are fine. (granted they could use an overhaul, but thats not what the OP is talking about.)

Hmm seems like a lot of people share your sentiment. I am starting to suspect I am further in the minority than I thought. Which is fine. Won’t be the first or last time I was mistaken. Thanks for the reply

So are you against the mega bosses because of the lag and FPS drop issues? Or because there are too many people doing them making them a uber zerg fest? I don’t understand where exactly you stand, and why you want them removed.

I don’t know if this is the right place, hardware support didn’t quite feel like the right place. Anyway, I’ve noticed that many people are having issues with lag at the mega bosses and wvw zergs. It seems that the particle effects have a lot to do with that, even on higher end graphics cards. Even if they aren’t lagging, it is near impossible to what what you are doing in those settings as the paricle effects, and massive amounts of people obscure everything. Its difficult to do anything other thatn mash 1, or auto attack, because you are essentially blinded. I sometimes have to turn all graphics setting to absolute lowest just to be able to function. There needs to be a way to turn down, or off the particle effects, and allow for further limiting of character models. Maybe just limiting it to party for those events. Something like that would dramatically increase performance, not only on lower end machines, but the higher end ones as well.

Anyone else having these issues? and would like to see this type of change? It’s not a game breaker, wouldn’t really effect ANYTHING but game performance resulting in a better experience.

Uhm, also about the playerbase increasing. Like. What the … . Where do you get these informations? Can you show anything that backs up that magic number (it’s not even a number is it?)? You do realize that megaservers were made for a reason right?

On the same token, theres no numbers to show that the playerbase is decreasing. The implementation of the megaserver, as many people like to think, doesn’t mean that the playerbase is declining either. Having 50% off sales for the game could also be taken as the playerbase is in decline. But companies regularly have sales, and it doesn’t mean that their customer base is decreasing. There is no evidence for it. However the implementation of the megaserver fits in perfectly with the social play style that they laid out in thier design manifesto. Yes some servers had a much smaller population, but others had such a large population it made up for it. People were flocking to the larger servers to have people to play with. The megserver allows you to be able to play with others easier, regardless of servers. This was their stated intention and goal. This does not equate loss of a playerbase.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/guild-wars-2-design-manifesto/
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/introducing-the-megaserver-system/

Well. People flocking to larger servers to have people to play with implements in itself that the playerbase is decreasing.

I also base my oppinion on my personal experience. I started GW2 with lots of friends. Today, I am the only one left of that bunch. Two of my guilds with 100+ players already died because of inactivity. The ones in my current guild share the same story as me.

Also, there was this interview with Colin J. on Massively which I can’t seem to dig up, where he said he “found the fluctuation normal”. I know what that means translated.

Edit: Sorry, it was on Eurogamer: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-01-14-you-thought-that-was-it-for-guild-wars-2

Edit: Also agree with Rebound. LS would be a nice filler between “real” expensions.

Awesome article! Although it was said that the drop in the playerbase was “normal” it is far less then they had anticipated. And again stated that WvW season one brought in a lot of new players, and that population-wise they “are doing great” and it’s a very steady and very very healthy population.

Granted this was back in Jan. However, that being said, 5 months isn’t enough time to see a dramatic population decrease unless there was a mass exodus. But with the success of WvW season 1, and season 2 underway, I can see more people signing up rather than leaving.

Yeah, my friends all left too. But that doesn’t mean the whole population is down. Becuase since that time hundreds if not thousands of more people have joined.

Honestly to imply that the devs are lying, or making false statements, or avoiding the topic of population because you (collective “you”) want to think they are an evil company is just not cool.

Making GW2 a bit more like GW1

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

OP: You want to bring back the mechanics in gw1, with the graphics and game play of gw2? Basically you want a revamped gw1. These are to VERY different games, mechanics and otherwise. For startes GW1 is not an MMO. Period. (http://www.guildwars.com/products/guildwars/features/default.php)

Also the way the mechanics, skills, events, etc. in GW2 are all designed ON PURPOSE to be vast different than its predecessor. While I agree that many of the things that make GW1 fun, and are done well, have their place. I don’t feel that bringing them into GW2 will actually solve anything, but rather cause more issues and problems simply because those things just wouldn’t work in this new setting. It’s like trying to incorperate VHS technology into a TIVO. While there were some good things about VHS in it’s time, it simply wouldn’t work.

Nostalgia also tends to distort our memories. I fondly remember “Captain N the game master” cartoon, among others. I recently tried to go back and watch them, 25+ years later…lets just way it was a less than pleasant experience. I almost cried.

TL;DR Keep GW2 as GW2 and don’t try to “fix” it by using obsolete methods.

Best. Thread. Ever. Too bad it got derailed…
I was inspired to write my own version of the song based on what was brought up here.
Here goes:

Tyrian Rhapsody

Is this the real life? Or is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide. No escape from my enemies.
Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see.
I’m just a poor boy, I need no sympathy.
Because gold is easy come, easy go
Little high, little low
Anyway the wind blows doesn’t really matter to me. To me.

Maaaamaaaaaa! Just killed a warband! Put my hammer against their heads, took a swing and now they’re dead.
Silvari life has just begun, and know we’ve gone and thrown it all away!
Didn’t mean to make you die,
If I’m not online this time tomorrow.
Carry on! Carry on. As if bloodstone dust really matters…

I’m too late! Tequatls just begun.
Sends shivers down my spine.
Inventory is full all the time.
Good bye everybody, I’ve got to go!
Gotta leave you all behind and face my wife!
Mama! ooo
I don’t want to die!
I sometimes wish I wouldn’t have a Norn at all!

I see a little silhouetto of a charr.
Scaramouch, scaramouch will you do the jumping puzzle.
Thunderbolts and lightning very very frightening me!
Zorromos, Zorromos
Zorromos, Zorromos
Zorromos RNG, Magnifico!

I’m just a poor plant, nobody loves me.
He’s just a poor plant from a poor Pale Tree,
Spare him his life from this Risen Monstrosity.
Easy come, easy go, will your guild let you go?
Asura! No – we will not let you go – let him go
Asura! We will not let you go – let him go
Asura! We will not let you go – let me go
Will not let you go – let me go (never)
Never let you go – let me go
Never let me go – ooo
No, no, no, no, no, no, no -
Oh mama mia, mama mia, mama mia let me go!
Balthazar has an obsidian shard put aside for me, for me, for meeeeeeeeeeee!

So you think you can kill me and loot my stuff!
So you think you can steal my buff!
Ohh babyyy, I’ll report you, noob babyyy
Just gotta get out, just gotta get out of the combaaat.

oooh yeah, oooh yeah.
Ooh yeah, ooh yeah
Karma really matters
Anyone can see
Karma really matters – karma really matters to me

YAY!! 2 points for you.

Back on topic though. It doesn’t matter how many times you beat it, you will have the same odds no matter what. Each drop is rolled on the RNG table. Increased luck adds more rolls, but thats about it. So your best bet would be to try to buy it off the TP, if possible, or increase your luck and continue those events.

It doesn’t make sense to have a garaunteed way to get a special drop. Thats what makes those drops so special. If they could be bought with tokens the value, and meaning, would drop significantly, making such things almost worthless. Much like dungeon armor. It’s not the greatest, but theres a reason you can’t get it off the TP.

They used to. The karma train in CS. The two events that popped within 5 min of each other, continously. (Shelters gate camp and Penitent camp) was a great way to farm karma, mats, and exp. But this too got nerfed. Sadly.

However I don’t feel that nerfing EotM will actually solve anything, If it’s not there, it will be somewhere else. And if everything is nerfed to the point where one cannot farm anything then people will complain even more.

Almost certainly. Everything that has been brought out so far, including festivals, has always had achievements attached. I don’t see why they would stop.

Should I stop playing?

Yes, for the six’ sake stop playing! Don’t kill yourself over this, it’s only a game. You’re not missing out on much and there is no sub, so your not losing anything.

Also I am pretty sure this is a troll, or OP has way bigger issues than a injured hand.

I’ve never seen him in game so…..
Maybe he hides food in his cheeks, like a hamster. It’s just not noticable.

But DnD also has bags of holding, which are much like worm hole bags. Maybe thats what all of our bags are, bags of holding with different pocket dimensions. But for the variable weight of Doobroosh, it would seem that his petuitary gland is somehow flawed, and with the hormonal imbalance this dramatically effects his size and weight.

I love it! Although my PC can’t run max graphics, there are still some stunning places all over Tyria. The many vista points are great, and even some “hidden” areas that offer some great views!

I believe he did die and the Eye was left behind. But that doesn’t mean it couldn’t have been found again. But such a find would have been remarked upon in game at the very least.

What I would like in a staff

So you are looking for staves to match your outfit? And the current ones don’t have the ‘magical’ feel you are looking for? Am I getting that right? Not trying to be rude or anything, just trying to understand. However, if this is the case, the staves in and of themselves are not magical, but rather a focus for the magic user. In the Sea of Sorrows book the elementalist uses a random piece of wood as a staff because his has been lost. This explains it better. Although I can see the wanting of better weapon skins, and the ability to dye and customize them much like the armor. I would love that feature as well.

I wonder if that event is tied to the Golems Eye as played out in The Ghosts of Ascalon book. It seems like the two are very similar.
