Such bug is very spread and has been happening for a while at several locations. It may even be related to being teleported when jumping out of water, going down or jumping off a cliff… the root cause might be all the same.

I don’t know how but after I saw this in a unrelated thread I believe it can give devs some clue about the issue: https://dviw3bl0enbyw.cloudfront.net/uploads/forum_attachment/file/225756/gw154.png
It came from a thread about broken textures but it got my attention that a broken texture was exactly over the oddly bright area. Maybe something is being projected there and then causing the high exposure?
Yup, I have noticed it with WP from other maps too. The explanation seems to be like Inculpatus said, it has to do with the levels on the map you are in and the map you are seeing in World Map, if the numbers of levels are different you won’t see all WPs in those maps. If it’s a bug or intended, I don’t know but it has been that way since beginning.
Does it simply crash while in any loading screen, or does it happen when opening the overlay during a loading screen?
I haven’t had any issues with it, I’m used to launch it through Steam for a while now and it hasn’t caused any crashes so far. Are you sure that Steam overlay is the culprit?
An easy change could be changing its icon and name at least, it has been done before with several items on past.
It’s not “an easy change”, much as I’d like it to be. It’s simple to describe, but someone has to design the icon and make sure it renders in all configurations, that it ‘looks ok’ and not too similar to other icons. Name changes require localization (i.e. translation etc). I’m sure I’m missing steps, too.
It’s not hard by any means and it’s among the least time-consuming tasks ANet might have to do for the game. Unfortunately, there are, at any given time, 632,528,153 “least time consuming tasks” for someone to do — most of them are never going to get done.
Ah yes, I’m aware about these details. What I mean with “easy change” is that this type of change hardly would break something, differently from the case where the functionality would be changed (like applying it to a different lvl or something). Visual changes are less likely to break stuff than behavioral changes.
Could we please get acknowledgement from someone at ArenaNet that at least they’ve seen this thread and are looking into these problems?
Even today, i went to do the guild rush in Southsun Cove and my chat reset once again just as i was about to launch the mission and when i then opened the Mission tab, it was completely blank. I was forced to leave the map in order for missions to reappear in the guild panel.
This is getting very frustrating. I don’t know if you realize just how hard it is to rally people to do this guild rush, everyone hates it and then having to deal with this kind of problem discourages them even more. I would appreciate it to at least know these issues have been noted and are being investigated.
Thanks
Well, maybe filling a Support ticket could draw their attention to this?
I wish at least they’d give them different icons or different names — stuff that doesn’t stack shouldn’t look the same.(
Agreed. Unfortunately that’s not the only case, there are several items in game that looks the same but are technically different.
An easy change could be changing its icon and name at least, it has been done before with several items on past.
It has been reported several times already, but unfortunately I can’t find any of the threads right now. Were you climbing down or running down a cliff when it happened? Or were you jumping out of water?
About the #1 it has already been reported: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Mute-GW2-when-in-the-background-bugged. A dev said they are aware but no ETA on a fix yet.
Yeah, it wasn’t on the first or second page when I was looking before posting. It must’ve gotten bumped later because after I posted that, I noticed it near the top. Searching on this thing is also kinda a pain in the a-hoe, so I didn’t bother.
Hehe, no problem. It’s just that I had posted on that thread recently then it was fresh in my mind.
Also, lack of or busy RAM can cause that. If the system starts to lack memory resources it will resort to Pagination file, that can cause a huge HDD activity at times. Open up Resource Monitor and in Disk Activity check how many process is using pagefile.sys too much, if any. It would be normal for a process to use it, but not normal if the time using it is too high, that means the process hasn’t enough RAM to work.
By chance does the mini map rotate when you turn around? There is an option that you can turn on Rotation, that option causes the pointer to always point up while the map rotates. Hover on the right side of mini map and 3 4 icons will appear on bottom, click the one with an arrow to toggle that option. More about it on http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Graphical_user_interface#Compass (option called Toggle Rotation).
Just got this at the Vale waypoint. Why has nobody answered this post yet, it’s been 17 flipping days?
There have been several issues with went without an official post for several months. Just a few days aren’t much a surprise actually. Also, it has been said that devs are aware about this issue already.
Usually when it happens the party chat gets like (figurative info):
00:01am: Me: (some chat)
00:02am: Someone else: (another chat)
00:03am: Shadow is (or You are) no longer in a party.
00:03am: User_in_FL.0000 is offline.
00:03am: Another_in_FL.0000 is offline.
00:03am: User_in_FL.0000 is online.
00:03am: Another_in_FL.0000 is online.
00:03am: Shadow has joined a party. <- all these happens at onceAnd then if I switch tabs only the online/offline and “no longer in party” notifications stays, all other chat gets cleared.
I have meant to report this issue for months now but I kept forgetting it.
Yeah you’re right, it’s like a DC. I don’t know about others, but happens to me around 4 or 5 times a day. Happens to both party and guild chat, and when the mini DC happens, my guild’s Message of the Day re-emerges in my guild chat tab, as if I’ve only just come online. I am on the Mac Beta, if that’s any use.
Yup, I think I forgot to mention about the Message of Day poping up again in guild chat. it happens to me too. By the way, not in Mac here, then can discard that possibility.
Is it possible that you are changing chat tabs? That makes it look as if you “lost” previous chats until you swap back. (I did that a few times before I learned to select my primary chat tab before worrying about whether there was a bug.)
Not in my case either. In fact, the chat vanishes after I switch tabs, like I described before. If I switch it before those notifications everything is fine, but when than happens the chat vanishes when switching from and back to.

Devs have a fix in the works just didnt make this patch hopefully very soon.
O.o Was that post a merge? Because I don’t think that thread is even related to this one.
Does it just give you an error like “cannot invite to party” when selecting the option or the option for that doesn’t show at all?
It can be something at your end. For me it looks normal, I even had a full stack a few days ago.
About the #1 it has already been reported: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Mute-GW2-when-in-the-background-bugged. A dev said they are aware but no ETA on a fix yet.
well, early I had said that I’m not affected by this issue… not anymore. This was at a cave at northwest of Fireheart Rise.
What chat was it? By chance was it Party chat? Well, I have been suffering a similar issue for months. Out of nowhere the game would put me “offline” without a disconnect, but then I would get a message telling me that my friends came online (but they already was), that I’m no longer in a party and then all party chat vanishes, as if I had left the party and then joined again. At the same time, the guild chat would spam the Message of Day again, as if I had just logged on or swapped guilds.
Yes exactly that, but it doesn’t matter which chat i’m in, it happens in any. i’ve been whispering ppl when it happens, guild chatting, map chatting it happens on any and even when i haven’t used the chat for a while, but guild chat seems to reset most frequently for me, probably coz i use that the most idk.
I used to get lot of game messages, “cannot connect to the guild server” at the same time, but that happens less lately and it usually separately to the chat reset now.
Also, when it happens, the player seems to involuntarily go offline and back online immediately to other players’ logs.
From my observations the chat getting reseted isn’t the issue, but a consequence of something else. The fact is that party chat gets reseted when a party is broken/undone (chat vanishes when you switch tabs after leaving a party). Therefore, as can be noticed by what described it seems somehow the game disconnects from the chat server, what causes it to think that we left parties and such. Such behavior can be noticed with the notifications of all friends going offline and back online all at once.
One day when it happened I told a friend that was in party with me that the game showed they went offline, but I was told they were fine and for them it was me who went offline. In fact, what seems to happen is part of the game, some underlying functionality, disconnects but not enough to cause a full DC or crash.
Usually when it happens the party chat gets like (figurative info):
00:01am: Me: (some chat)
00:02am: Someone else: (another chat)

00:03am: Another_in_FL.0000 is online.

Possibly related to https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Level-81-Harpy-In-Fields-of-Ruin ?
They meant that your screenshoot shows that you are viewing the Wardrobe tab, that one is used to change the skin of your currently equipped items. The area at the left will only show anything if you select one item from the ones you have currently equipped, in this case none. If you want to see what equipments you have available to use you must switch to the Equipment tab.
I’ve only seen it in skritt caves, and I thought it was intentional -- ooh, shiny!
*drolls* Ohhh, shiiiiny! Stuff, stuff, stuff! (I couldn’t resist :P )
Well, based on a few reports in another thread it seems to have to do with the graphic card, but not confirmed yet. If that’s the case there won’t be much that Anet could do to solve it. Just gotta wait for an official reply and maybe filling a Support ticket could help.
Let line energy?
lol. Oh? Somehow it reminded me about Waypoints getting “broken” a while back O.o
Oh, this thread seems to be one with most useful info about the issue so far (first time I see someone pointing a possible cause). Also, this issue has been reported several times already (like https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Lighting-Issues-merged)
I’m really curious, I have gone to these places and it looks normal for me. Can anyone share what are the graphic settings you used when experienced the issue? Maybe it could even help the devs to track the issue too.
Screenshot taken with phone since client crashes.
Nice to see it’s fixed. Also I just wanted to take the opportunity to give a hint to OP and anyone else: If you need to take a screenshoot in these cases you can do by clicking the Taskbar, making sure that no other application comes to the front, and then press Print Screen, then open an image editor (e.g MS Paint) and just paste it (Ctrl+V or Paste button) and voila
We’re aware of the issue and a Fix has been written. No ETA at this time
fixed that for you
also, thanks for letting everyone know
Lol. It got me wondering how a “bug” could be written. :P And add me to list too, I have had that option unchecked for ages but after this week’s patch I noticed that the game got muted when I swapped to another window and then I saw the option checked. It got checked again after relogging.
I know this is an old thread, but I just wanted to let everyone know that this should be fixed in today’s patch. You still won’t be able to use these items to get into full maps, but now they won’t be destroyed when you try.
Woot. I haven’t been facing the issue but nice to hear it’s fixed. Thanks for the update.
LOL fixed??? You can’t use them but they won’t destroyed now. I/2 full or 1/2 empty? Doesn’t really matter does it?
Well, as far as I know the issue was about the item being consumed even when the teleport failed, and yes that one was fixed. But if you mean about the teleporting failing, that’s a different issue and can happen due several reasons and has nothing to do with the item itself (like map full).

No that’s jumping out of water. For me it looks like it’s an issue with jumping off cliffs, and pressing space to glide after that. My issues were nowhere near water.
Ah I see, however I believe they are tied somehow. I also have heard reports about players getting teleported when jumping off a cliff or something. A while back someone reported it happening when climbing down a building in PvP.
There have been several reports about that (yay for broken search then I can’t link them here). Also, according with the Known Issue Tracker list this issue is being investigated but devs seems to need more information about it.
It would be better if you could report that through in-game Bug Report tool, that way devs can gather more info than we can provide. Also, with the Megaserver thing it would be easier to provide what server IP was it, events can stall in an instance while work well in another, in this case the in-game tool helps to tell what instance was it.
It’s really an annoying issue indeed. I recently had crashed with a black screen while doing Octovine and it was down at 10% when happened, when I got back I was put in a map with 95%. -_- Maybe a solution would be having a grace period for disconnects before freeing that space for new arrivals, like 30 seconds or 1 min. I don’t think it’s hard for the game to differentiate a log off/crash from a map leave. If the player leave the map and is still online the game would free that slot. If they leave and then goes offline, the game could wait a bit before freeing the slot.
The same could be for giving credit. If a player crashes during an event the game should grant the reward if they come back online within that grace period. It’s annoying to work hard in an event and get no reward at all due a crash right when it was about to end (I missed 2 events while going after daily achievement due black screens) :S
Maybe the rooting cause could be tied to the issue about teleporting when jumping out of water, that’s being investigated. The behavior is very similar.
With the Megaserver thing it would be better if you report it through the in-game report tool. That way the devs can know exactly what instance is it and several other info that we couldn’t provide otherwise. Just remember that you won’t get any reply from that report.
Maybe it would fit more to be posted in the sticky thread about map art issues: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Stuck-in-the-map-or-seeing-map-art-issues. And what an eye O.o
Hmm, I had never seen that thread before. So, it’s not a “feature” but indeed a unfixed bug? O.o I remember seeing a few months back a dev saying that’s it’s “how it is”, in other words, a feature. But in that thread you linked it sounds like a bug they couldn’t fix.
Yeah, not a bug but a dumb and badly chosen design decision. I still don’t get why it was designed that way as it seems to be more confusing than helpful. That’s completely unneeded because if you wished to continue playing with a friend you could simply join then in the next instance without messing up yours. Also, the prompt is easy to miss and doesn’t give any warning about this at all.
But well, it has been that way since launch then I hardly hope something will change despite several and several reports like this one. *shrugs*
The issues are possibly related yes.
Bug Fix:
- Fixed an issue in which the nameplates of players would move erratically when character models were culled.
Well, a little news… today I have suffered with this issue 3 times within 30 mins of gameplay… :/ It made miss an event that was at 50% before it and done after I logged in back -_-
Someone had just reported it these days: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Experimental-Envoy-Armor-Names-Reversed/
That’s not new. I have been suffering with it for around one year now. https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Constant-black-screens-and-disconnects/
Speaking of which, today this issue had driven me nuts… I was doing the final meta event at Auric Basin and just when all the lanes were around at 5%… poof I went, black screen, and when I logged in back I was put in another map where the progress were around 60 to 95% yet that looked to be condemned to fail -_-
As if it wasn’t enough frustration, after it I went to try Great Jungle Wurm for daily, it was my last chance in the day.. I joined it at the pre… the Wurm spawns and when it reaches 50%… poof I went again -_- and when I came back guess what? Yeah, it was already dead to dead… -_- In a single day I lost 2 big events due this kitten black screen issue…
A little note for OP: you don’t need to hit Ctrl+Alt+Del to leave it, just hit Alt+F4 and the game will close. Also, if you hit Shift+F12 you will be able to see the game’s log out panel, but none of the options will work, and if you hit F11 you are still able to open Options. That’s the only things that you can do when that issue happens.
I noticed that as other soldiers were freed the number didn’t go up immediately, they started walking toward the camp and then the number increased roughly 5 seconds later. This makes me think that the bug is directly linked to one of the soldiers dying in that 5 second window.
Actually, it seems that what makes it to count is the NPC reaching the camp, not an exact timer maybe. Since the killed NPC never reaches it the event stalls. I have seen that behavior with other events, where the progress updates only when NPCs reach certain areas (“Rescue castaways” at Frostgorge is one that comes to my mind).
By the way, wiki says that Gargantula event is followed by (then possibly tied to) the soldiers event: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Kill_Gargantula,_the_spider_broodmother
