A Guide to the Casual Ranger / Druid

in Ranger

Posted by: sonicsix.5713

sonicsix.5713

If you are considering GW2 and/or have the same play style as I do, then this post may be of benefit to you.

I am a casual player. I rarely do dungeons or fractals, I do not raid and for the most part, I play solo. I enjoy helping other players, I like to do events and occasional grouping. I do the PvE dailies most days and like to work on various achievements at my own pace. I chose a Ranger/Druid because of the flexibility and survivability the class offers. I almost never die and I keep a lot of other people from dying as well.

I am not a min-maxxer nor do I care to have the very best items. I will upgrade if the benefit is significant and the cost is not prohibitive. With the spec and gear that I have, I can freely roam the entire PvE world without fear of dying. I can kill packs of enemies with ease and many champions can be soloed. Some champions wipe the floor with me.

I have all the permanent gathering tools because I enjoy farming as I play. I also have the 5 shared inventory slots so I can keep those 3 tools, my home portal stone and my Copper-Fed Salvager handy. Since I have a level 80 of every class (and 2 guardians), having these items in the shared inventory slots is very nice… and profitable.

My play style has allowed me to have 100% map completion, 100% story completion and 2 legendary weapons that I crafted myself (The Dreamer and The Bifrost). I am level 500 on 4 crafting professions and 400+ on the rest of them across my various characters. My ranger is Leatherworker and Huntsman, both level 500. I do not play the Trading Post at all. I simply sell what I don’t need for 2c less than the current lowest bid. I salvage everything up to and including rares, and sell or bank the results.

My bank slots have been expanded to stacks of 1000 and most slots are full. This allows me to sell off huge quantities of items when the prices rise. This also has allowed me to have thousands in gold. I do splurge from time to time but I would rather have the funds handy in case I decide to get another legendary and have to buy the precursor… again.

Anyway, if you like to play solo and want a character than can handle everything the PvE world can throw at you, start a ranger then switch to druid when you can. If you are like me, you will have a blast in GW2. If you start new, I suggest a bear and cat for your pets (use cat all the time and bear in case cat is about to die) then get the Smokescale and Bristleback when you can.

My character name is Jerry and I am on Stormbluff Isle server. Say Hi if you see me.

I have attached a link to my current build for those who want to see what works for me. If you pros out there see something I could easily improve, please let me know.

Shared Inventory Slot Feedback [merged]

Give me 5 slots like you have now for the price you have now, but if I put the permanent gathering tools in them or the copper/silver fed salvager, let them be usable straight from the slots without equipping them and THEN and only then would I buy the slots. They can still be single item slots sued for any items not soul bound, just if they tools are in there, they can be used as I described.

Please Add a Solo Mode to Dungeons

sonicsix.5713

YES! I want to get some dungeon tokens and also work on the dungeon achievements but I have absolutely ZERO interest in grouping. I choose to play solo. When I tire of solo content in a game, I quit playing. I am about a week away from that with GW2.

EDIT: let me clarify… I have a legendary weapon, I have a level 80 of every class, I have 100% map completion on my main and 100% minus HoT on 4 others. I have 3400 unspent gems, roughly 477 gold and probably 5000 worth of mats stored in the bank. I love the game but hate fractals, dungeons and anything else that forces me to rely on others to complete.

Grind Wars 2 - Heart of Thorns

I was able to complete all the new zones because I happened to be able to play during “the rush”. Now, the zones are dead. And by complete, I mean I got 100% map completion… no way have I done the achievements nor will I. Now I am left to grind experience to spend what mastery points I have. The ones I don’t have are behind content I do not enjoy participating in like fractals, dungeons, etc. So now I log in each day, farm my home instance, get my daily chest and log right back out.

Putting mastery points in fractals will not make me do fractals. I will simply quit playing.

As your average casual player........

sonicsix.5713

I am a casual, solo player. I have a legendary “The Dreamer” and 100% map completion, including the HoT zones (thanks only to being in the right place at the right time). I use online guides to walk me through certain aspects of the game, otherwise I would NEVER figure out how to get certain places or obtain certain items. Heck, if it wasn’t for Dulfy I wouldn’t know half of what the game even has in it.

Unfortunately, now I am at a point where there is nothing to do but repeatedly grind content to get mastery points I still lack. Of course, I lack all the ones that are achieved by doing things I do not enjoy… like fractals, dungeons, etc. So my time with the game is up unless things change. I just wish there was a group option and a solo option to obtain everything that the game offers. Thankfully, there is no monthly fee so I can check in every month or so to see if the game is more solo player friendly.

And before you say “it’s an MMO…” to me that just means a lot of other people play it, it shouldn’t mean I have to rely on them to obtain certain things. Anyway, y’all have fun playing whatever way you enjoy playing.

Grinding masteries has become a hated thing to me. I have little desire to log in any more as I know I cannot complete anything else until I grind out theses stupid masteries. I guess a break is in order… I will check back in with the game in a month or so and see if anything has changed for the better.

Agree. The new multi-layered maps are horrible. Yes, there are some people who love them but for me it is pure annoyance. I wait for Dulfy to put out a guide, I follow it then I am done with the zone. There is no way I will grind out enough Mastery Points to complete Dragon Stand. It is just too tedious and NOT fun.

You need to start from Nuhoch WP. Go through the cave into the Decrepit Nest and go to the south side of that cavern. There’s a small tree root you can climb which gives access to a ledge overlooking rata novus.

Thank you! I cannot imagine how I missed this as I climbed oh so many roots.

I’d say about a 3. It is fun when you can play and actually accomplish something but not so much when your map has almost no one in it and you cannot do much of the content because the game forces you to rely on others.

Look, I know darn well that if you can filter out words and alter the text (bad word filter), you can certainly do the same thing for the domain names of the gold sellers. So when they send their spam emails, PMs and map shouts, their beloved URL is filtered out. It is not that big of a deal to add their domain names to a filter file as they pop up.

I gather as I play. Use what you need and sell the rest. I don’t try to play the Trading Post as that is just not my thing. I sell all the rares and exotics that drop for me, usually undercutting by a small amount. The most I have had is 910g, but I decided to get my legendary bow (had to buy the precursor and a few mats). As of today, I have 229g.

EDIT: I rarely run dungeons, am level 2 on Fractals. I prefer open world PvE playing solo. I am a Ranger.

Massive means big, GW2 is big. Multiplayer means multiple players, nowhere does it imply they must play TOGETHER. Online is well, online.
