Yeah…. only this isn’t wine nor is it as bad as substance abuse.
People have died after spending multiple days playing video games and neglecting things like food, water, and getting up to use the facilities. It’s at the extreme edge of things, but there is still the potential for addiction and abuse.
Also, kudos on taking a metaphor waaaaay to seriously. It takes effort to be that obtuse.
Having an addictive personality to the point you neglect basic needs is one thing.
Until someone neglects their needs and responsibilities, it isn’t a big problem.
Sure they could spend less time on a video game but if it still allows them to function normally and meet ends meet and basically be a functioning person it’s not as bad substance abuse infact its down right ignorant and disrespectful to anyone who has had or known anyone with substance abuse problems.
Quite a big chip on your shoulder, I see.
Again, you are taking the statement waaaaaaay too seriously. Seek professional help. I mean it.
This is not a punishment, or a deliberate choice. It’s a last resort when a problem with their hardware required a reset before some of the data could be transferred to permanent storage.
In other words, it’s gone and no one can bring it back. If you are old enough to know what it’s like to write a term paper, it’s like spending three hours typing up your paper and the power goes out… then you realize you haven’t saved any of your work and it’s all gone.
Nowadays they have wp software set to autosave but when I was in college you’d hear people run through the halls screaming when this happened. There’s nothing you can do except swear like a drunken sailor and start over.

And before im alittle flamed as that seems to be the trend on these forums, im not bashing the game im just saying its not for me. Will the game survive? of course it will its a fantastic looking smoothe game with alot to do. its just more achievment unlocking than it is progression based and thats not to every players taste.
It’s good to see you realize that, the problems are being caused by people who can’t get past the “I don’t like the game you guys made, change it now!” attitude many forum posters have.
The truth is, as a non-subscription game, the piles of money they made (and will make) from the box sales represents the majority of cash the game will bring in. Sales from the cash shop may help pay the day-to-day maintainance but the bulk of the profit comes from boxes. They’ve already made enough to guarantee an expansion and even advertised on the site that they are hiring.
So, if you don’t like the game, it’s no big deal. I’ve bought games that turned out to be duds, many times. I don’t go to their websites and yell at the devs because they made a game that isn’t to my tastes. I just learn from the experience and have become more careful about how I spend my money. I know that I don’t usually like modern-era games or FPS games, so when I read something like “Kill’em All is an action-packed first person shooter set in modern day Afghanistan…” Then I already know that I won’t like the game so I don’t buy it.
Some of you bought the game expecting WoW in a different wrapper. It’s not, and it’s not going to be that game. If it’s time to move on, move on, and learn from the experience. Don’t act like we’re stupid or Arenanet is incompetent because they did something different and you didn’t expect it.

Oh, and you should check out this.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartle_Test
The Bartle Test.It is a theory that divides players into 4 categories.
- Achievers
- Explorers
- Socializers
- Killers
I am an Explorer type myself.
I think huge amount of gamers are Achievers. I don’t understand why. If you wanna achieve something, go to University, get a degree, become a surgeon, do research and cure cancer, or go study math. Those are things that you can call real achievements.
Real achievements require real efforts. You can aquire pseudo-achievements by simply having the ability to sit on your butt and press buttons for long periods of time.
Do these people go to football matches and say they think football is stupid in front of a thousand or more fans?
It would require quite a bit of courage to do that, since it requires being there in person and the potential that other people would be able to respond to your face.
Actually the equivalent would be sending an unsigned letter with no return address to every NFL team saying “you suck!”
There is no monthly fee, you play the game or do something else with your time.
Dungeons are broken because the measures they took to discourage speed runs were more severe than intended. When rewards are appropriate for the difficulty there will be plenty of people running them. Until then the dungeons are only a tiny part of the game, not the point of the game itself. Do something else, even if “something else” does not involve GW2.
What I learned about this game by leveling my first toon to 80 is that level really isn’t the key. Karma is. You ahve to do a ton of dynamic events to stay viable. Since, I hit the high 60’s I realized you need an insane amount of karma to get Exotics and legendary.
If your goal is to get a legendary weapon, be advised that it doesn’t really give you an in-game advantage over exotic (?) weapons. Their point is that carrying a legendary weapon requires a legendary effort, so be prepared to put in weeks or months of effort to gather the necessary “stuff” to put towards it, but the weapon itself is not the point. It’s the journey, and the fact that this journey means that it won’t be like other MMOS where every third player is carrying Gromunndungur the Sword of Awesome Awesomeness on his back.
Legendary weapons are intended to be rare, but not game changing.
I started a new Norn yesterday and fresh out of the tutorial zone I went to Hoelbrak and spent something like two hours wandering through the city, went into every animal spirit temple and talked to every named NPC… at the end I was barely level 3. I probably could have “tagged” every POI and vista in the city in 10 min and gone on my way, but I really enjoyed seeing how the city was designed and many of the named NPCs either had a conversation that hinted at their personality or gave an in-game benefit like increasing Charm/Dignity/Ferocity. Several greeted me as a friend a few called me an annoying child…
Someone who rushed through the game to get to 80 expecting some glorious transformation is not only disappointed when nothing changes, but he has missed 99% of the game getting there.
Don’t worry, they’ll go back to WoW in a few days… and a month later will be back again, having rushed through Pandaville and gotten bored again. It’s the ADHD generation.
I just want to help a fellow player up so they would not have to pay the cost to both travel to nearest waypoint and repair fees that come after few more of similar encounters like so many have done for me in certain situation. It what makes a great community but being unable to do so is kind of hurting it.
It’s a nice idea but you will have to create a character that supports this activity if you want to do it. I’d like to play a toon that flies and shoots fireballs out of my butt but I can’t and I’m probably never going to. You can play a toon that goes around rezzing people if you want to.
I accept it, life is full of disappointments. As such things go, this is so minor as to be almost unnoticable.
And I don’t like football, so what happens during the Superbowl is irrelevant.
Life is full of people who choose to live with disappointment. Others, like me, prefer to take an active approach in making things better. Also, analogies are a time-honored tradition in forum posting, lol.
The oppressed masses of the world thank you. Or they would, if you were actually out there working to make the world a better place.
I accept it, life is full of disappointments. As such things go, this is so minor as to be almost unnoticable.

Yes, you must follow my orders to the letter or the Guildwars Goons will come to your house and smash your computer.
Sigh.
Ever since 2 people asked for a screenshot with his /age the op has not been back.
Calling out bad trolls tends to have this result.
keeping you busy???
dude! you play more than 40h / week.
please, game responsibly…
This kind of comment really amuses me. Its not the first time i see it.
Game is lacking? It must be you! Play less!
Seriously, a game you need to play less must have something seriously wrong. You understand that your words betray you? I just hope you’re not the avatar i know…
Indeed OP, play less, or not at all.
Drinking a glass of wine with dinner is enjoyable. Drinking five bottles of wine a day is a problem.
Servers crashed last night, and apparently when they brought them back up some people lost info about what they did around the time of the crash. These things happen, it’s only a game it’s not like your employer “lost” your work records for the last week and claims he doesn’t have to give you a paycheck because he doesn’t know whether you were at work or not.
Patience is required. I’m sure that as they gather data about the effectiveness of their efforts, Arenanet devs will adjust the diminishing returns threshold until legitimate players can still do what they want to do while hardcore farming and botting is discouraged.
It is helpful to different things, in game and out, to get around the penalties. Log out for a few minutes every hour or so, get a drink or a snack, see what’s on tv, chat with a friend, check your email… move from one area to another and alternate between gathering mats/killing mobs and other activities. Go to the WvWvW or PvP areas for a while…
The spirit of the anti-farming measures is to discourage players from doing the same thing for hours on end. So it stands to reason that you will have the best results by following the spirit of the game and doing a variety of different things instead of killing mobs until you get your 30th crafting doodad.
Also, recognize that the TP is there to supplement harvesting mats and to provide you with the last 4 or 5 items you need to craft that masterpiece. By refusing its help you are making a choice, and it’s a choice that the game is actively preventing by discouraging you from farming for mats constantly. If you have a surplus of one material sell some and use the money to buy what you need. You still gathered the mats, you simply converted the gathered items into a form that you can use more effectively through the trading post.
If you choose to go against this, then you will likely run into trouble even after the diminishing returns threshold is adjusted. But you have made an informed choice to do this rather than go to the TP to supplement gathering efforts and so you accept the handicap by doing so.

When I first did some serious WvW (as opposed to just exploring the maps), I was shocked at how many defeated people were flodding the chat with “rez”, “rez pls”, “rez me” … even in the middle of intense battles.
For whatever reason, it seems to be something that People Do in WvW. (And sometimes these special people also show up in Champion fights.) You have to learn to ignore it.
The people doing this don’t care about team play. They don’t care whether the objective is lost, their comrades are defeated, or anything else. They are there to PvP and kill other players, and they can’t do it while staring at their unconscious body lying on the ground. The only thing they care about is getting back up so they can fight. Ignore them.
“Thanks folks, that’s about what I figured. But the strong response made me figure I’d better check in to be sure.”
In games like this, I’ve found that when another player takes the time to specifically call you a kitten in open chat or private, it’s a good indication that he is the kitten instead.
The real question is, why do you care what other people think of your game? I bought it, it belongs to me and I will play the way I want to. The other players merely share the environment with me, I respect them but will not tell them how to play their games and will not allow them to tell me how to play mine.
I suspect the reason behind this is that if someone died and didn’t get a rez, they could still get credit for an event they participated in. Perhaps the event is close to ending and they don’t have time to run back from a waypoint. It would be very annoying to participate in events and not get credit. I hope they keep it this way.
It also fits with the non-competetive spirit of the game. AOEs aside, if any mob stays up long enough for you to get even one shot at it, you get credit for the kill, xp and a chance for loot. Same with events, as long as you do something related to the event you should get something for it. Keeps the greedier players from taking all the goodies for themselves.
I’ve even gotten medals by accident… while on my way from Point A to Point B I see some red names and because I usually have ranged attacks active I kill a few and go on my way… a few mins later I get a bronze or silver medal from an event I didn’t even realize was happening because I didn’t even get close enough for it to show on my mini-map.
Because you cannot send mail to yourself, the only way to share items and coin between toons is through the bank. If you have a level 80 with a few gold to spare and are working on crafting for a new alt with no money, it’s easier to withdraw some money from the bank to buy supplies than to log out, log in with the 80, buy supplies and deposit them, then log out and back in with the alt.
It’s not a problem, it’s the concept and design of the game. This is not the game you are looking for.
If he’s still fighting you can help a downed player by killing the enemy he’s fighting. When that enemy dies he will “rally” and stand back up and regain some health. It’s not always enough to stay on his feet but at least you helped. If he’s already down there’s nothing you can do except kill any enemies in the area then revive him.
If you’re part of a large group then it should be easier to revive someone, if no one else is doing it then the others can distract enemies while you revive the fallen. If there is someone better suited to the job then keep the enemies off them while they revive.
It’s nice to be helpful but putting yourself into a position where you know you will die too doesn’t help anyone.
After trying different race/class combinations, deleting and starting over several times when I wasn’t satisfied with something, I finally decided on what toons to create and level up… this morning I began playing a Norn Ranger, because there are several areas in the Norn starting area to pick up animals. Before doing so, however, I went to Hoelbrek to explore the city and pick up crafting skills.
I went around to every location in the city to get 100% completion. Along the way I saw a lot of “named” NPCs I could talk to. Not sure if I got everyone but I talked to everyone I could find. Several give options to increase charm/dignity/ferocity so my charm is almost at its maximum from conversing with them. I spent several hours in the city and the rest of the day exploring the area southeast of Snowlord’s Gate where there are the various animal shrines. I filled in hearts and participated in dynamic events, etc.
In one day I haven’t even fully explored a quarter of the Shiverpeak Mountains area, my toon has 3% World completion and 44% Wayfarer Foothills. I haven’t even travelled to any other areas including Lion’s Arch yet.
For each race there are several branches to your personal story. You pick some kind of group affiliation such as Norn’s spirit animals, and an individual choice such as something that happened to you that is unresolved, in the Norn example either a drunken brawl, a rival looking for a rematch or a lost relic. Later in the game there are three different groups you can join. Just with regards to the stories, I could run three of four different Norn characters using different classes through completely different stories.
There are four more races, each with its own starting area, its own set of branching personal choices, its own city to explore.
To say that you have already done everything there is to do… you want me to believe you’ve levelled 15-20 toons to 80 and fully explored every area, talked to every NPC, mastered every class and explored every dungeon? Not buying it.
You ran through the game like a marathon runner, or like someone playing a very complex game of baseball where you “touched” hundreds of bases for just a second before rushing to the next. You may have explored 100% of the map but you missed 99% of the content.
Want to know what to do now? Make a new toon and actually play the game.
Hardcore? Play nethack. So you’re 99% of the way through the game and die? Welcome to nethack, your new character is level 1 and standing at the entrance to the dungeon.
LOL, how is it illegal and how is it offering them to hack your account? It is against the TOS and cause for permanent ban, aka loss of your account to ANet. The gold selling will be addressed as best as the company can and it will probably never be sufficient to compete with foreign markets attempting to sell you goods. Doing anything against the TOS cannot be advocated openly so doing so should be considered at your own risk.
1: log into gold seller’s website
3: you lose your gw2 account
5: mysterious charges appear on your cc statement1: You don’t log into anyone’s site with GW credentials. XD
3: Yes, ANet will ban you if your’e caught breaking the TOS. Don’t do it.
5: No reason to assume this will ever happen.
I’m not talking about Arenanet. The people behind the gold selling are criminals who prey on stupid people who use the same login info and/or are stupid enough to download infected software and use it to steal their “customers” accounts.
Typical gold seller accounts are named random things like “Xuvspr” while stolen accounts are more like “Bob the Mighty.” Bob was a very foolish person who bought gold from Mr. Xuvspr and now Mr. X is using Bob’s account to lure in more people.
Not long ago I actually recognised a gold seller’s name, it once belonged to a player I saw in the starting area when I made a new toon… it was a misspelling of a common word and caught my eye because of that. A few days later, now he’s hawking a gold selling website in Lion’s Arch.
Most of the gold sellers I’ve seen in the game have been stolen accounts. It’s baffling why people would do this when they can easily make money just by doing what they have been doing – playing the game. Now they are out the cost of the game and whatever time and frustration spent trying to regain control of their stolen accounts.
“if you don’t know then don’t reply”
Ok then I won’t.
See those guys with names like Lord Killsalot standing around going “buy cheapist gold best srvece xyz dot c0m pwr leviling hand famring”
That used to be someone who thought it was a good idea too. Now someone else uses their accounts to lure in stupid people.
1: log into gold seller’s website
2: gold seller hacks your account
3: you lose your gw2 account
4: friends see “you” advertising gold spammer website
5: mysterious charges appear on your cc statement
Not a good deal unless you like spending $60 on a game you can’t play.
Not sure what you’re getting at, I don’t see anyone going “Ha! No lewtz 4 u!” Just someone complaining about being kicked for going AFK. A misunderstanding, perhaps, or you’re just trying to give a lame excuse for getting kicked from a random group and looking to ruin the rep of the guy who kicked you. Either way it doesn’t mean anything to anyone else, there’s no proof that so-and-so is a bad guy.
As others have said, sell higher value mats on the TP and use the money to buy lower value mats. If you need a mat that sells for 20c and you sell better mats for 1s then each sale = 5 mats you need.
As for downleveling itself, working as intended. Eventually people will get the idea that this is not WoW and was intentionally set up so that you cannot play it the way you play WoW. When people learn how NOT to play WoW then they’ll enjoy the game a lot more. Or go back to WoW and let us enjoy the game instead.

“(And, just for the record, GW2 is not much less than three weeks old, counting from headstart launch. It’s way, WAY too early for people to be talking about the game being “ruined forever”.)”
LOL… the only reason why it took them this long to declare the game dead is because forums weren’t open at launch.
Perhaps they have been a little overzealous in making dungeon running less appealing to min/max grinders, but I for one find that this is a good thing to do. I have been playing Rift since that game first opened to the public and the worst part of the game is running dungeons in a PUG. You get stuck with four random strangers who, more often than not, rush through the area killing anything that needs to be killed to get to the boss, ignoring everything that isn’t in that path, and never speak a word to each other.
Unless someone screws up. If you’re running the wrong spec, use the wrong weapon/spell, DPS isn’t high enough, you don’t know the boss fight, then you get insulted and kicked.
They aren’t running the dungeon because they want to explore, or have fun, or even to kill virtual monsters in visually stimulating ways. They just want the loot at the end, usually they don’t even care about what the bosses drop they want the Marks that they get for their daily/weekly quest rewards.
So I feel like I’m not a participant in the dungeon run, just another obstacle to get through, the casual noob who doesn’t know what he’s doing and needs to be carried so the other players can get their marks and get back in line to make another run.
If Trion would offer a four-pack of NPC party members so I could run dungeons by myself for $50 I’d gladly pay it just to be able to run a dungeon at my own pace and without the potential to get insulted and/or kicked because I don’t play the FotM or speed farm. The difference would be barely noticable, it already feels like I’m following a group of robots.
I think that Arenanet’s staff have followed the developments in other MMOs closely and actively choose to follow a path that is unlike their competitors. Having introduced a fully featured MMO without a subscription fee not once but twice, they are obviously no strangers to taking risks with their decisions. They should probably continue to adjust the risk/rewards ratio of running dungeons until it is encouraging to do so but not an easy source of quick coin. However, choosing to discourage people from the “gogogo” school of dungeon running is definitely a step in the right direction.
There are many MMOs that give you what you want, but few that offer what GW2 does. I see the change as a positive one, and hope that they continue to examine the situation and act accordingly.
Completely irrelevant to the topic… “BuFFo the Clown” is an amusing nickname, there was actually a professional entertainer who called himself “Buffo the Clown” who worked at carnivals and such in the area where I used to live a few years ago…
(edited by tolunart.2095)
“Really, if there are any real goldsellers that don’t just scam accounts in order to turn them into spambots to get more accounts and actually give you the coin you paid for”
I don’t think these exist, and if they do, they don’t stand in the center of Lion’s Arch going “Safe and fast GW2 Gold! Hand-leveling power farming! Safe and fast you trust me!” and various other things in broken English.
In the wiki it is mentioned GEMs can be bought via real money or in-game by other players. And it’s fine.
But is gold-selling allowed? I see people spamming “enter www.blahblahblah.com best price x € per 100 gold” or something. I report them for spamming. Am I wrong doing so?
This is because Arenanet charges your cc and gives you gems. Gold sellers charge your cc, steal your account, sell your items and turn your toons into bots that advertise their services because their last batch of bots have been banned from the game.
If you like throwing money away, and don’t want to play the game any more, feel free to use their services.
Rangers are fun and have a built-in reward for exploration, collecting pets from every area of the map you visit.
friend wants to try-before-buy and i’m wondering if he can just download it on his computer and use my account for a couple hours. anything to prevent this?
Not that I know of… assuming you want to be banned for TOS violations.
Oh, so I should craft jewelry too?
It’s my personal preference… say you have a Ranger, if you use leathercrafting to make armor you either have to choose hunting to make bows, horns and stuff or weaponsmithing to make swords, daggers etc. In either case unless you’re also playing a warrior, thief or engineer there will be some weapon types you can craft but can’t use. And by the time you can equip that +10 power bow you’ve also found a +9 vitality bow and a +11 condition dagger so you have to choose what to use and sometimes end up just throwing away the weapons you make.
But jewelry drops seem to be more rare so if you have a +6 vitality ring and a +5 power ring you’ll probably keep them until you can craft something better or buy better stuff from a karma merchant.
Ranger is a good class for a beginner. I would also suggest a Warrior or a Guardian. They both do well. What ever class you take make sure you pickup some crafting. For Ranger I suggest Huntsman and leather worker. Warrior and Guard I’d go Armor-smith and weapon smith. That way you can keep your weapons and armor up with your level.
I get tons of weapon drops I’d recommend pairing the appropriate armor crafting skill (tailor, leather, smith) with jeweler to further buff your stats, seems like there’s more of a selection of weapon drops to choose from than rings and amulets.
If doityerself weapons are a concern just make an alt with two weapon crafting skills like huntsman and weaponsmith would supply anything a ranger, thief, or warrior needs.
(edited by tolunart.2095)
Warrior and guardian don’t seem to be as complicated… kill stuff and buff allies. Ranger is good too since you have a built in partner to distract enemies. Thief is iffy, seems like Thief and engineer are in a gray area between combat and finesse… In any case, ranged weapons are your friend, killing stuff before it can get to you is good and a lot of mobs have ranged attacks too which puts melee at a disadvantage. Learn crafting and make armor/weapons/jewelry to help increase your stats, for surviving fights a higher Vitality keeps you on your feet longer and Toughness buffs your armor.
Less in-your-face classes like mesmer, elementalist and necromancer are probably best for more experienced players, with these you have to balance attack power with weaker armor and less hit points than combat classes.
Overflow is not your home sever, it’s a temporary server to hold toons from every server when the home server is too crowded… hence, “overflow.”
Overflow was not intended to be a permanent destination, you only go there when your home server is full, and should go back to the home server ASAP. You aren’t being punished for being on overflow, the game just wasn’t designed to link back to your home server.
Because WvWvW stats can change while you are on the overflow server, in order to view them you would have to access the home server from overflow. You are on overflow because the home server is full, sending requests to an already full server would only cause problems. If you care about WvWvW then you want to get back to your home server ASAP, not stay in overflow.
The xp/movement/crafting enhancements are useful enough but not critical… the costume potions are just annoying, they don’t seem to have a purpose other than to go “look at me! I’m a lizard!” and they can’t be sold or given away. After opening eight or ten chests I have gotten a different variety from each which just takes up inventory space so I deleted them.
As for the keys to chest ratio, they stack so just save the chests for later. Eventually you’ll reach the point where you keep collecting gold with nothing to spend it on, trade excess gold for gems and buy keys to open chests, get more keys to open more chests… buy ten keys and open a hundred chests, use the buffs to level an alt or something.
Grindgrindgrindgrind… ok I’m 80, what do I do?
Go back to the starting area and play the game.
That’s exactly what I meant when I said people are still trying to play WoW when this is a very different game. Have you read up on the legendary items that you can craft via the Mystic Forge? If you’re interested in the top level gear then this would be something to work towards.
Do you craft your own gear? I haven’t reached the end of the game, in fact I can’t even decide on which race/class combo I like best, so I don’t know what kind of gear you can craft at skill 400. But from the beginning you can create things that add stats to crafted gear and use them to “discover” new recipes via gear components. Helm cap + helm lining + Vitality buff = Vitality Helm. So you should be able to craft some armor like that and use transmutes to give it whatever appearance you want.
There is a segment of the MMO population that is tired of playing WoW… but still wants to play WoW. Perhaps because they don’t know how to play anything else.
“Endgame” is MMO-speak for “I want to sit on my awesome mount and show off my awesome armor while waiting for the raid to start.”
The company behind this game isn’t chasing your $15 a month subscription. They don’t need to keep you entertained until the next expansion, and don’t need to hand you everything on a silver platter. The game itself is the endgame, as long as you want to explore the world there will be new things to discover, before you can find everything or achieve everything they’ll have an expansion ready that adds even more stuff to do.
But the trick is that you have to look for it. Grinding to max level ASAP and saying “gimme more” isn’t playing the game. The process of developing your character begins at level 1, not 80. Enjoy the ride.
I’m logged into the forums and there are no quote buttons for me, either. I don’t see three buttons at the bottom of every post, no arrows at all, just a “chain link” in the lower right corner. I couldn’t even log in without lowering my privacy settings from “medium” which is not an issue with any other forum – I kept getting an error saying that cookies were disabled but they are not disabled at medium, just restricted from doing things without telling me. Perhaps there is a problem with their site?
[Edit] Very strange… I posted a message in this thread and suddenly the other two options have appeared – quote and report. It must be a bug because until this moment they were not there.
