Mia, I am just reiterating what ANet has said, pretty sure this is how it’s gonna be from now on, I doubt they’re gonna change their formula that much.
So Rebound I get what you’re saying, that people buy cosmetic things which keeps this game going. However, in my argument about “free stuff” I was specifically referring to the story content of these updates, not what items they offer in the gem store. Of course people are buying up what they offer in the gem store, that’s how this game thrives, but people will buy stuff regardless of whether the story is great or mediocre. I was saying that people complain about the story content, which is free, and I don’t understand why. I am a firm believer that most MMO players out there really don’t care a whole lot about the story, I mean, I have been in a ton of guilds and not a single soul in each of them seemed to care or want to care about the story at hand when I would try to bring it up for discussion.
And as for the quality of these updates as a result of QQing, well, that’s just a bit presumptuous, I don’t know if you are a GW1 vet, but in GW1 they had great stories, lore, etc and they didn’t need QQing to get that. The team for GW2 is just as great, and they are good at telling stories. Thing about the Living World though, is that it was a new platform in which to tell their story. Imagine a TV episode, in a single episode, you get the story told to you from multiple perspectives from multiple characters. I think that ANet had this kinda thing in mind when developing the Living World, gradually tell the stories of multiple characters over the span of Tyria, however, in each Living World update (I would consider each update an episode) you can really only tell the story from one perspective, and then in the next episode you tell another perspective of the overall story, and slowly the pieces come together.
The thing about this format though, is it confuses players so I can see why players QQ. But ANet has acknowledged this, they are going to change how the Living World story is told in the Second Season, they have said this. Once again, people complain so much about the Living World but this is brand new, a new frontier in the MMO space and lets give them some leeway here to make things right. The finale of Season One is sounding pretty epic at this point.
I consider LS a huge “hiatus” between perma-content
This.
It will remain to be seen in the coming months if they indeed do have an expansion in the works in the background with their secret teams working on their secret projects.
But even if they don’t, we will still get permanent content as a result of the Living World stories, new zones ARE in the works, it’s not even a subject for debate, they have said that there will be new zones, and other perma content. It just comes down to whether they decide to do it in an expansion format, or via free Living World content.
Another side note, lets give ANet some slack with the Living World, this was their first time doing it, heck, the first time any MMO has churned out that much content in that amount of time, on a regular basis. I really consider Season One of the Living World to be their test run of sorts. They have learned a lot, and judging from the last few Living World events (Tower of Nightmares anyone?) I feel like we’re gonna be in for a great Second Season of the Living World.
As with anything new, it always takes time to hit your stride. Keep up the good work ANet!
On another note, I have never understood complaining over free content….. Now if we had to pay $15 a month to play this and got mediocre content (not saying that the content we are getting is mediocre, but that is certainly the feeling of many people who infest these boards) then I could see your genuine concern, but everything we are getting is free of charge. Who complains about free stuff? It baffles my mind.
ZenonSeth, while I can see where you are coming from, but I think you do not completely understand what the Living World is supposed to be. ANet has explained it so many times and well, lemme try to explain to you in simpler terms what the Living World is supposed to be.
Ok, so in real life, events come and go, a due date for a school paper, someone’s birthday, an election (of which we did have in game, do you expect an election to be permanent content? sigh) a solar eclipse, an avalanche, an earthquake. Those kind of events in life cannot be replayed, will you be there for all of those things? That’s up to you and what you want to make time for in life, but if you miss out on those events, that’s just the way it is, you can’t replay an election, or a natural disaster, you can’t replay a specific date in time, and that, in essence, is what the Living World is supposed to more or less entail, those events that happen, whether you are there or not, in a world that is LIVING and that changes from day to day. Or in this case two weeks by two weeks.
Now, ANet will be adding in permanent content, in fact they have added quite a bit of new permanent content, maybe not in the way of brand new zones, but that is coming, there just hasn’t been a real reason to open a new zone yet, story wise. But when the Living World story takes a turn towards, lets say Kralkatorrik, I can assure you we will get Crystal Desert zones, that will be permanent, those zones will be left in the game forever as a result of the temporary events of the Living World.
That is, in the case that they decide to ultimately do away with any expansions in the future. However, recent comments would suggest otherwise.
So to just sum all of this up, crying over the temporary stories of the Living World is like crying over missing fleeting moments of life that you can’t replay, THAT is what the Living World has always intended to be, and I think they’re doing a pretty darn good job at it considering it’s new to the MMO scene and they aren’t just copy pasting this formula from some other MMO and doing their own twist on it. If this isn’t what you want from an MMO there are a lot out there that you can play. I hate to put it that way, but this is the model that ANet has chosen and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
Hmmmmm, I think I’ve figured it out….
Elona starts with the letter “E”
Mr. E……
ELONA EXPANSION CONFIRMED!!!!!
The only loose end is… What do the Hallucination spores have to do with the Scarletbot?
The Hallucination gas will be spewing forth from the exhaust pipe of the Scarletbot, raining a gaseous cloud of terror down on us! :-O
Ah ok, I get what you were trying to say now
Well I watched it again and noted that the voice said, “…destroy all of you.” Which, the way it’s worded means that whoever the voice belongs to, they are on the side of Scarlet, because if it was an ally, the voice would’ve said, “…destroy all of us.” I am thinking that this voice is the voice of the person really behind everything, and that scarlet, like her giant marionette is just a puppet in a grander scheme of things.
But vector, she didn’t “morph” them through magic, it was a voice command during her speech that triggered the transformation. The Watchwork Knights when being first assembled would’ve had to have been built in with this, if she didn’t herself manufacture the Watchwork Knights, then she at least had people in on the manufacturing of them to ensure that she could have them fall under her command with just a phrase.
Relevant questions:
1. Who is the voice?
This
Just this.
No one is discussing it really, it’s all about the watchwork mega robot and the wurm, but whose voice is that?
I’ve kinda wondered if maybe Scarlet gifted the Watchwork Knights to Divinity’s Reach, like she manufactured them and then as a trojan horse kinda thing, “made them” for Divinity’s Reach under the guise of someone else. I mean, in the Tower of Nightmares it seemed like the Watchwork Knights were built in with a voice command protocol to go under Scarlets commanc at the right phrase.
I am so confused, the trailer gave us nothing except that everything we’ve been theorizing has just gone out the window…..
To be honest, this is probably the first content trailer that I am really disappointed with because…. just WTF is going on….. I give up on this story arc, the wurm is plausible and maybe that should’ve been the main focus but the giant marionette? Ugh, just ugh….
Just to add…In the edge of the mists map the same broken gate can be seen…a solitary one, and if you look in you will see lions arch fountain.
I just wanted to throw this out as well. What if the gate is symbolic of all gates. ASurans have been tapping into energies to get gates functional and if those energies were in some way rooted to ley lines and not just dragon energies she could be for all intents and purposes be seizing all gates in Tyria, with that broken gate being the teaser. The back flow of energy for however she is seizing them could be responsible for a break….that would certainly change Tyria forever. Furthermore she could be dialing them into somewhere else like the edge of the mists but also anywhere else we have been before or not. Underworld, fissures, etc. We don’t know the state of these realms or what’s going on in them. If she has found a way to control a gate she could have found a way to dial into these locations in the mists as well. Another major change and reason for a new area.
I really like this a lot, and after reading this I went back and watched the end of the Our Story So Far video where it shows the gates at the end, the thing that stuck out most to me this time watching it through is that only one of the gates is broken. When I first watched this I was all, oh, the gate’s not working cause it’s all broken, but the one behind it is not, yet the portal is not active, so now I am wondering if maybe the leylines do have to do with the Asura Gates.
I mean on Asura Gate page on the wiki it explains that it was once thought that it was powered centrally from the Central Transfer Chamber by Primordus, which has now been destroyed but yet the network still remains functional. I think you’re onto something here….
Ummmmm, not to be rude, cause I am usually welcoming of strange theories, but the moon? Just because a trailer has a moon in it does not mean that we’re going to the moon, I think that final scene is more supposed to be focused on the broken Asura Gates, and the reason the camera is pointed towards the sky is because if the camera were pointed downwards, it would reveal to us where the Asura Gates really were, which some people speculate is Lions Arch. If it does end up being Lions Arch that would be a pretty huge spoiler to reveal in a teaser trailer.
Bumpity Bump Bump
This is kinda what I think of when I see the mysterious probes
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seismic_source
Kinda like the device they used in Jurrasic Park, to find the fossils underground and get an image of them, but something that’s continuous.
I had an interesting thought today, I was discussing Primordus with a friend and he wanted to know the origin story, as it were. So as I started off the explanation, I told about how Primordus was in the Central Transfer Chamber, or at least a room off of it, I can’t remember exact details, but he was close, if not in, the Central Transfer Chamber, which housed a lot of Asura Gates.
I was showing him a mysterious probe as well, and explaining how I thought that the word “probe” kinda seems to me like they’re probing for something underground.
And then after watching the trailer today for the Living World recap, at the end when it shows the broken Asura Gates, I went back to my explanation of Primordus and how he was by (or in) the Central Transfer Chamber, which also had Asura Gates…. Is this final scene in the trailer hinting that we are going to be dealing with something Primordus related?
Just a random thought.
Last time I did this I just didn’t get much success, so here I go again…..
After guild hopping from one guild to the next I have found nothing but guilds filled with people who either don’t know what’s going on story-wise with the game or just plain don’t care, and I am tired of it. I am tired of being the only guy in any guild I have ever been in, excited about the new Living World update. The only one excited about the story and where it could go. The only one who seems to care about lore or ever wants to discuss it.
Now sure, I could come on here and discuss such things on the message boards, but surely these people who discuss lore on here are in guilds! So help a brother out and lead me in the right direction to a guild that has a decent about of people who are actively playing the game that I can get excited about this games story and lore with. THERE MUST BE A GUILD OUT THERE FOR ME! :-(
I am currently on Crystal Desert, but would definitely be willing to transfer to another server if I happen to find that right guild
(edited by webtoehobbit.4201)
What if the guy speaking in the video is Mr. E???
But that’s the question I have, why give us the components to break the barrier that would allow us to kill the big toxic plant? Are we playing into her hand? Apparently she wanted this to happen?
So, with this End of Nightmares instance we had, we were taken to a room where Scarlet had laid out a puzzle from each of the alliances she had made in the past. And with a component from each of these alliances we used “Scarlets Forge” to create a glowy ball of something to finish off the tower.
After this though, I started to wonder, why would Scarlet more or less leave us with the ingredients to destroy the tower? Unless this is a glimpse into what she has been trying to gain from using all of these alliances? This glowy ball of whatever obviously affected the tower bloom negatively, so is she planning on killing some plant? Is that what all this has been for? The Pale Tree?
My only other thought is that Mordremoth, I assume, is made up of plants, as he is the Elder Dragon of vegetation. And since the tower was all about corruption, maybe Scarlet had them construct the tower and she had us test her weapon against her small scale model of an Elder Dragon of vegetation? I don’t know, lots of questions still remain, those are just a couple of thoughts I had.
Now your turn! Ideas? Thoughts???
OMG!!!!! THAT WAS AN EPIC CUTSCENE!!!!!!! Best one yet, kitten I love this update so much, permanent changes to Kessex. ANet, today you have won me over yet again
This news has me more excited for Guild Wars 2 than anything since release! Finally and end to Scarlet and an explanation for what she’s been doing, I love how ANet pretty much reiterated all of the questions we’ve had since the beginning of Scarlet in their post today, which means we’ll be getting answers for them
Not only that but something that will rock Tyria to it’s core? I smell an Elder Dragon
Knowing that the main story arc after Scarlet is going to be about another Elder Dragon, I feel like Scarlet has been trying to harness the power of an Elder Dragon for herself, and we’ll see her fail miserably at that and then awaken an Elder Dragon, but we’ll see.
But even if we don’t get an Elder Dragon in the finale of Scarlet’s story, we will at least be closer to a new story arc that will involve Elder Dragons
Konig, you know, you are not always right. And this is where I prove you wrong. I will quote what you said, “There will not be any expansions.” But here, just three months ago, Colin was interviewed and said that they haven’t decided on whether they will do a traditional expansion or not, they’re still deciding, want proof? Here it is:
Fast forward to the 4:00 mark
So I am not just some idiot posting about an expansion when I know they have denied doing one, but unless there has been an interview after this one that definitely says NO expansions, then this CLEARLY states that it could still happen.
I stated what I believe to be my theory on what the Living World is going to end up being, no need to tear every single one of my posts apart, well, not just mine, but everyone else’s too it seems.
Konig, king of the lore boards, don’t anyone else dare come up with a theory, cause only his are right and everyone else just doesn’t know what they’re talking about
But if Bubbles is awake, we have at least seen big signs of his awakening too, for one, we have the Quaggan, they came to the surface BECAUSE of Bubbles, not because they wanted to. Oh, and the Krait too, they were driven from the deep sea.
So that there too just further proves my point, when a Dragon awakens, you notice it, there are world changing effects, not just one Oakheart.
(edited by webtoehobbit.4201)
Hey, your theory is as good as any others BeoErgon, unpopular as it may be it’s no better than any other, people are just grasping at anything at this point to try and tie it back to the Elder Dragons.
ANet should realize that people want more on the Elder Dragons, more lore specifically on their nature, origins, etc and start focusing on that. We don’t have to be fighting Elder Dragons to learn about them.
It’s threads like this that make me sad, cause it just shows how much people want more on the Elder Dragons, and we’re just not getting any, so we grasp for the littlest thing and try to make it into something bigger, like this theory.
Thing is, it’s a nice theory though, but how does it make any sense that Mordremoth, Elder Dragon, would just corrupt one single Oakheart? That just is not in line with how Elder Dragons seem to work when it comes to minions, they seem to create lots of minions at once.
Look at Primordus, first to awaken, he had armies of Destroyers. Then we have Jormag, lots of minions as well, then Zhaitan, lots of minions there as well and finally Kralkatorrik, corrupting many many people and turning them into his army of minions.
But Mordremoth here, yeah, he just makes one minion….. I find it very doubtful that it really is a minion of Mordremoth, just because the word “corruption” is used, does not automatically tie it to an Elder Dragon.
Not to mention, if the Oakheart really is the one and only minion of Mordremoth, you’re also making the huge assumption that Mordremoth has awakened, as it seems that dragon minions are only created AFTER an Elder Dragon has awakened. I mean, if they could create minions before they awakened then we would’ve been dealing with Destroyers a lot earlier than Eye of the North…. Just sayin. And it seems very doubtful that Mordremoth has awakened because when Elder Dragons awaken, you know it.
Lets see….
Primordus’ awakening: Leigons of Destroyers wreaking havoc amongst Tyria
Jormag’s awakening: Drove the Norn from their home in the Northern Shiverpeaks
Zhaitan’s awakening: Entire body of land risen from the ocean, resulting in a tidal wave destroying Lions Arch
Kralkatorrik’s awakening: The dragonbrand
So unless Mordremoth is the black sheep of the Elder Dragons, I really doubt that he’s awakened yet, which means he cannot create Dragon Minions.
(edited by webtoehobbit.4201)
And I believe that when it comes time for her plan to come to fruition, and when she tries to harness or control the power of an Elder Dragon to her ends, she will not be able to control it (playing with powers that are beyond her control) and that will be the definitive end of Scarlet that ANet has been saying will eventually happen.
Konig, why wouldn’t Scarlet’s story eventually lead back to dragons? I believe 110% that it will lead to the reveal of another Elder Dragon, I am still convinced that the Living World is, and was intended to be used to bridge the gap between expansions, if each expansion introduces a new Elder Dragon, why would the story inbetween the expansions be anything but a lead up to the next Elder Dragon?
Yes, a lot of these stories seem disjointed but I really feel like either Scarlet is working with an Elder Dragon, maybe Mordremoth, maybe his corruption is Chaos, which would fit perfectly into her anti Dream/Nightmare outlook on life. Or, Scarlet is wanting to harness the power of an Elder Dragon, and is gathering various bits and pieces from each alliance to achieve that end.
It all comes down to this, they have said that the Living World is like a TV show, it’s episodic, and that’s great. But NO great TV show out there has so many episodes not relating back to the main story arc, and it would be hard to argue against the fact that the main story arc of Guild Wars 2 is the Elder Dragons.
If Scarlet’s story ends up having nothing to do with the Elder Dragons, I will probably stop playing this game, cause that is months of my life wasted on a story that went nowhere. I believe this audio clip to be genuine and it definitely supports my belief that this Scarlet storyline all ties back into the Elder Dragons.
And that’s what the origin of this thread was, cause I have seen numerous people claim it but where does it say it? Where was it mentioned? Or are people just making up lore as they go?
See, this is what I find interesting, how a Gods magic or essence can basically be absorbed and then one can become a God themselves.
See, with the new Thaumanova Reactor fractal, Scarlet says that Chaos Energy is a misnomer for Dragon Energy. I looked up the word misnomer to get an exact definition, and it’s defined as basically giving a name to something before it is fully understood. So according to Scarlet, Chaos Energy IS Dragon Energy.
Going with this train of thought, I recalled that people have stated that Abaddon released Chaos Energy when he died and released it into the world. (Once again, I haven’t come across anything that states this as fact) And if indeed Chaos Energy is Dragon energy and if Abaddon released Chaos Energy upon death, then does that mean that Abaddon was basically made up of Dragon Energy??
Now people might say, that’s rediculous, but here’s where I think it may not be. Back during the Cutthroat Politics patch, we had two choices for fractals, Thaumanova or Abaddon, and I always thought that was quite the contrast to choose from. I think that ANet more or less was wanting to tell a part of the story and they had a few ideas on how they could do that, they boiled it down to either Thaumanova or Abaddon and let us choose how we wanted to see that part of the story be told.
Now what major story points did we learn in the Thaumanova fractal? Two things:
1) Chaos Energy is Dragon Energy
2) There are magical ley lines beneath the surface of Tyria
They used Scarlet in the Thaumanova fractal to relay this information because she is insanely knowledgable and would know such things, but in the Abaddon fractal, I believe that we would’ve learned the same things more or less but just told differently. If in fact Abaddon did release Chaos Energy upon his fall then we might learn about Chaos Energy that way.
Which then brings me to my next point, which is the theory I am kinda coming up with. I know that this has been brought up before, as far as the Gods and the Dragons connections, and most people shoot it out of the water, and that’s fine, but I am not sure (due to lack of a good search engine on this forum) as to whether this has been brought up yet or not.
I feel like if indeed Abaddon was comprised of Chaos Energy, which is in fact Dragon Energy, then maybe once the Elder Dragons fell before, they didn’t die per se, but rather, upon their defeat, released their Dragon Energy back into the ley lines that course beneath the planet when they went back to a dormant state. And with all this energy there in the ley lines, maybe that’s where the Gods came from, cause they came AFTER the Dragons fall. Maybe it’s a cycle, and the Gods and Dragons are just bodies that are used to house this Energy for a time. First the Dragons come and devour the magic, killing things off, and then when their job is done, the Gods absorb this Energy and return to Tyria, but they are benevolent beings so their job is to work with the new species, help them grow and evolve into self sufficient beings and then once their work is done they depart from the world, releasing the Energy back into the ley lines, and the Elder Dragons then slowly start absorbing this energy until they have enough to awaken and start the process all over again.
I am thinking along the lines of the Mass Effect story and the Reapers if that makes any of what I said easier to understand, a cycle of life and death.
That’s my thoughts now since the release of the Thaumanova fractal.
(edited by webtoehobbit.4201)
So I am in the basic stages of forming a theory, but one key element of it is whether or not Abaddon did or did not release Chaos Energy/Magic upon his death.
I have seen more than a few people claim that he did upon death, but I have not, as of yet, been able to find an official source for this, is anyone able to state a source of this knowledge?
Many thanks!
ProxyDamage, I assume you voted for Kiel, because all these responses that people give of, “She would’ve been involved somehow” are just Kiel supporters that are trying to defend their poor decisions.
Fact is, nothing Scarlet does makes sense, but at least ANet has all these things take place recently, in her lifetime, there is no way at all she would’ve been there for Abaddon, live with your poor choices, vote better next time pls.
Carighan, this topic is not about whether GW1 is better than GW2. This topic is about people voting for Kiel and getting sub par content in return for your votes.
No, Scarlet wouldn’t have been alive. It just makes me laugh, all this rage over the story of the fractal and all these people saying, “Vote for Kiel, we all know what happened to Abaddon! Thaumanova is new lore! DRAGON ENERGY!”
….. Yeah, look what your “theories” got us, more Scarlet, the alternative, Abaddon, wouldn’t have had Scarlet in it. In fact, I feel that the Abaddon fractal would’ve probably explained the Chaos Energy/Dragon Magic in a different way, just without Scarlet.
So once again, Kiel supporters, thanks! And no complaining now if you voted for her!
Thanks a lot, at least with the Abaddon fractal we would’ve seen a God…..
Necros that wear dark colors are cliche….. Way to be boring, switch it up!
Amen and hallelujah panzer!
It boils down to two different things, either:
1) There is some huge big awesome reveal looming in the near future about Scarlet that will tie everything together and will leave all of us who ever doubted ANet for a second hanging our heads in shame….
or
2) ANet has no idea what to do with Scarlet or where her story is going and is just coming up with random stories to fill time…..
I happen to side with the latter option but maybe ANet will prove me wrong.
Have you played gw1 were abbadon was the god responsible for shiro the lich and a majority of major events from the gw1 lore.
I think I should ask you if YOU played GW1, because if you have you wouldn’t have just said what you said. See, the thing about GW1 was that each campaign was a self sustaining story, WITH MEANING! Yes it was all tied together in Nightfall, but it was just another layer to already great story and lore.
This Scarlet story has absolutely no meaning to it at all, it’s just all hodge podge, shoddily put together and has no meat to the story.
I played GW1, which is why I get so heated bout this Living World stuff because I know what ANet is capable of and they are not using it!
An expansion will at least give me an entire new region to explore even if the story is complete crap. I wish they’d add a new zone in already.
I totally solo’d it, it’s definitely soloable
Amen and hallelujah panzer!

I really doubt that will happen. There will be no explanation as to where this toxic plant came from in the first place, what it is, or anything like that, I am willing to bet money on this.
Expansion please
It will be Wintersday in a few weeks panzer, this storyline of the Tower was just another filler episode in the Living World saga…. Wait, haven’t they all been filler episodes?
The cutscene looked pretty, but it was hollow, as has all of the Living World updates since this all started. The story is gonna have to beef itself up a bit if ANet’s gonna continue to try to sell this novelty of a Living World to it’s players and actually keep them interested.
They should’ve been after us for taking the water orb way back in the personal story, yet they let that slide easily, so I doubt it.
And yes, that’s it. The invasive weed once again just being annoying, and trying to make us care that she exists.
The thing is, what was she actually doing?
She just goes ‘well, I’m done here!’ after getting 2 races together to build a huge tower in the middle of Kessex kills, leaving you to just go and wreck it.
The problem is that she isn’t like the Joker, where you’re left guessing what the heck is he up to now. The player is just left wondering if she had any motives to begin with.
That’s my thoughts exactly, that cutscene looked cool, but if you really listened to it, it was basically Scarlet saying she has absolutely no motive for any of it. There was nothing to gain from this new Toxic Alliance, from the sound of it, the Nightmare Court that was involved had more to gain from it than anything.
ANet has compared their Living World to a TV show….. Does ANet think that people watch shows like Game of Thrones for the special effects?
NO!
People continue to watch shows for the great engrossing stories and character development, which Guild Wars 2 has yet to do in their “Living World” updates…. Soon the novelty of bi-weekly updates will wear off and people will wonder, what’s the point of all of this? If I were you ANet, I’d reveal something big about Scarlet and/or her motives pretty soon or maybe you’ll find your ratings for this “TV Show” of yours to start slipping.
I should have known, nothing amazing would’ve come from this story, just another cliffhanger, nothing meaningful, wow what a waste of time lol.
I mean, come on already, reveal something big ANet, what are you waiting for?
This update was nothing more than, “Oh look, Scarlet’s still up to no good………….”
What the actual f*@k……
