UPDATE: This is very much a known issue and the matter is under investigation by several team members. We apologize for the time it has taken to get the situation resolved and we will keep working on it until things are back to normal.

FYI: The issue is not isolated to Guild Wars 2, but is also impacting other games.

There is almost no data that I cannot link together for analysis.

This week I created a table composed of multiple in game interactions that was larger than 800 billion rows.

I think I might be suffering from data envy… we complain when our users start creating queries that contain a few million rows.

I’ve been there, not fun times.

Would you ever attempt to formalize the system?

As someone who is very much interested in a career in economics, how did you get involved in MMO economies? Also, what would you consider your basic day-to-day routine?

Step 1 is definitely play MMOs. Play them a lot, play many different types, be the best at them. Learn to understand them from every perspective, not just your own.

These are all of course suggestions that come from (and essentially describe) my personal opinions on the matter. You could, arguably, get a job without accomplishing these, but you’ll be much better at that job if you do.

Does that include understanding mmo socioeconomics, reward psychology, and how the two relate?

That’s going to be really hard to learn without a mentor or a lot of experience. There is some good information, but I wouldn’t call it complete. It also changes drastically between cultures which is another hurdle.

Apologies if I’ve missed it, but I have yet to see someone suggest team-switching to spectator working the same as switching between Red and Blue. Disallow it if it would unbalance the teams. The general case is still possible, but harder. One person could move to spectator in a 5v5, but autobalance wouldn’t happen unless another player from the same team left the arena completely. Even if this doesn’t fix the problem entirely, it still makes team switching more consistent and less able to be abused. This should probably be done regardless of any other steps we could take.

Just to round this out for completeness and to avoid leaving a misimpression about this matter: I just reviewed your ticket and note that you updated to say you made the purchase from your “recent purchases” column and realized you’d erred in the purchase. This is confirmed by our game logs.

So this was a case of mistaken purchase and there is no bug in this case.

Step 2 actually learn economics. There are many ways, choose the one that will work for you. A good portion of economics is intuitive and mathematical, but a lot of real value comes from the ability to understand what’s happening when that isn’t true.

Step 3 don’t skimp on the extras, advanced statistics and programming. You want to know SQL and python (for now), but you’re way better off with a more fundamental programming education and that means c to c++ to c#, then branching to sql and python.

These are all of course suggestions that come from (and essentially describe) my personal opinions on the matter. You could, arguably, get a job without accomplishing these, but you’ll be much better at that job if you do.

Would it hurt to share some of the info? And here i’m thinking in dumb funny info just because i’m in the mood of having a laugh with the data.

As examples:
How many players sold a legendary at a really cheap price by misstake? (150 gold instead of 1500 or something like that).
How many players destroyed precursors because they don’t know what they are?
How many times someone bough the same unique item because of lag or another reason?

You know, that kind of data that makes you smile in the morning ^^. I guess there is better ones but i’m sleepy at the moment.

It would have to be numbers that I could look up that weren’t polluted by goldsellers.

Some of our UI doesn’t gracefully handle the smallest resolution heights. Unfortunately this means the only thing players can do is up their resolution.

The real fix is to move some of those things around.

What kind of tools do you use to manage the economy? Did you develop them in house, get them from a third party, or is it just excel gone wild?

We have a big data solution to help me manage the obscene quantity of data involved. I have a mix of third party and proprietary tools, but one never fully escapes excel. I’m oldschool and have an unhealthy love for excel, though it has many limitations, so if I need to do more advanced statistics I need to use more serious software.

As someone who works in the BI/DWH field, I’d be extremely interested in any more details that you are able to provide about the tools you use, so I guess my question would be around the scope of the game data you’re able to access with these tools.

For instance, are you able to link data about how players spend their time in game with data about their “economic activity”, and thereby observe trends and patterns that might not be obvious otherwise?

There is almost no data that I cannot link together for analysis.

As I said, I have a question out asking if we might have a bug. If I learn more I will update this thread or contact you. You remind me of the process, and it seems odd that those actions could happen with a single click. In fact, they can’t. But people get distracted, things can stall momentarily in the process… there are a lot of ways something odd can happen. I can’t explain it, but I’m trying to figure out what took place.

I appreciate that you understand how a refund isn’t possible. Being able to offer such a remove upgrade/refund gems service is something we’d all really like to do and I’m hopeful that someday we will be able to do that. Right now, I want to again say we all appreciate your support and your understanding, and are sorry we can’t help further.

There’s definitely a bug here. The achievement bonuses aren’t being applied.

This is unrelated to the display bug where magic find while having a boon doesn’t show up in the stats screen.

I encountered a wonderfully odd thing with the gemstore, wherein I was buying Black Lion keys, and received a character expansion slot instead.

Now, having already contacted support, and gotten their response that they will not be removing the character slot and refunding the gems, I’m wondering if it’s that they can’t refund gems, or they won’t.

The answer to this particular question will be the difference between me ever supporting the game again, or not.

I’m finding this particularly amusing, since my gem purchase and attempt to buy keys was my first burst of supporting the company after an extended period of refusing to give them money since they hadn’t done anything I viewed as deserving of it. My reward? Receiving an item I had not intended to purchase, and being told it’s my problem.

First, thank you for buying gems to support the game. We really appreciate it.

I’m sorry that you didn’t get what you intended to buy. I have already started checking to make sure, but as far as I know — and I usually hear of issues pretty quickly — there isn’t a bug that gives someone the wrong BLTC product. Again, I’m sorry for what happened, but I believe this issue arose through simple human error on your part (no offense intended!)

The reason we cannot undo this transaction is that, quite frankly, we do not have the tools to make changes to the core account and its upgrades. Replacing or refunding the wrong item is a different process than removing an upgrade. (If we can’t process an item request it would be for a different reason.) So the request was declined because we cannot reverse the acquisition in a way that’s fair and equitable for the player but that has no potential for negative impact on the game economy.

Clearly, replacing gems while allowing the upgrades to remain in place is not a prudent policy, as it would encourage a lot of abuse. And that’s where the “game economy” comment came in. If we refund for upgrades and allow the retention of the upgrade, we’re inviting people to try to “eat their cake” (get a refund) “and have it too” (keep the upgrade).

I am very sure your request is legitimate, and I hope none of this is off-putting to you. I’m just trying to offer a truthful explanation about why we cannot issue refunds for account upgrades.

Edit: Confirmed — no bug in relation to this incident.

Uh oh. Gaile just had a really kittenty day at work. Thanks for your efforts Gaile! The community appreciates it.

No, actually, that’s a good day for me! Not because we had an issue, that’s bad, sure. But we were able to explain to our players, and I love (absolutely love!) transparency and being able to say what happened and what we’re going to do to get it fixed! Then, we were also able to get this fixed on an individual account basis, and with two waves, for everyone impacted. This is all good! (Well, except for the initial issue, but hey, fixing stuff FTW! )

I walked out of work feeling like we’d done a good job under trying circumstances, and I was so grateful for the agents who helped me look at the accounts and get back word to players, in real time, about the corrections we were making.

I’m no economist by any stretch of the imagination. Mathematician… yes. Economist… no way. However, I’ve been enjoying this particular topic quite a bit, so I’ll throw my own question into the mix.

In general, what determines whether or not a particular item will be tradeable? Is it a complex list of criteria, or is it relatively simple?

I’m honestly of the mindset that the vast majority, if not all of the items, should be tradeable, but I also know that might be a stretch overall.

It isn’t simple. There’s a lot of factors that go into the decision. The intent of the item, the reason or goal behind it’s creation, usually leads us in the direction of deciding.

QUESTION:

How long does it usually take to implement big changes to the economy from the point that Anet decides that something has to change until the patch goes live?
As the question is propably too generic, i will give 2 past examples, you maybe are allowed to comment on:

1. The change of making ectos salvageable into t6 dust. How long did you monitor t6 dust until you decided that their droprate in general is too low and how long did it take you to come up with the idea of salvaging them from ectos instead of raising their droprate across the board? And over a year later, did it work out as expected in the long term?

2. How long did it take to implement ascended weaponcrafting from the decision to implement it until it went live in september last year? And how much did you have to prepare the game economy for it? I guess the 2 patches before it (Pavillion and Invasions) where a way of injecting lots of mats into the market in preparation.
Had the introduction of Essences of Luck a big impact on the way you decided to implement ascended crafting or were these changes rather unrelated? I also guess, you already had a good plan on how to implement ascended armorcrafting 3 months later before you released ascended weaponcrafting. How much changes went into armorcrafting between september and december?

1. We were monitoring the situation for quite awhile, brainstorming solutions. I cannot take all the credit for that change either, Izzy is the genius in this situation. The change has worked exactly as we hoped it would.

I also wanted to add, that this could be a DNS issue as well. Please try the steps in the following link to override your current DNS settings and use Google’s Public DNS.

Using Google Public DNS
http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using.html

Once done, please follow the steps below to clear the DNS cache.

Press and hold the Windows key and press the R key. This should bring up the “Run” dialogue box.
In that box, type “cmd” without the quotes, and click the “OK” button. A DOS window should open.
Enter the following command below and press enter: ipconfig /flushdns
This should clear your DNS cache. You may need to perform this command a few times.

If this resolved the issue you will need to contact your ISP in order to have the issue resolved. Using a DNS that is not provided by your ISP may lead to slow connection issues.

Okay so there’s a number of different things that can resolve Trading Post issues. We’re still looking into this issue, but in the meantime, please double-check to see if you’ve tried the following:

- Update video card drivers
- Make sure you have all DirectX updates
- Try disabling security software
- Update IE
- Delete gw2 cache folder
- Simply right-click the client and select “Run as Administrator”

You guys are correct about talking to characters in replay mode to get additional copies of the items. However we are probably going to move the phantasmal residue out onto the instance completion splash screen in order to make it more clear for alts.

  • Fixed various issues in Frostgorge Sound events.
  • Adjusted the difficulty of champion tendrils in Mordrem events in the Iron Marches.
  • Fixed an issue in which the “Coat yourself in Mordrem spores to baffle Mordrem defenses and gather samples from the vine chambers” event in the Iron Marches was stalling.
  • Fixed an issue in which the Mordrem wolves would incorrectly spawn at the start location of the “Stop Mordrem from spreading corrupted tendrils in the Iron Marches” event.
  • Increased the time between enemy waves in the “Help Arcanist Xanf set up his spectral disruptor” event in Cursed Shore.

What kind of tools do you use to manage the economy? Did you develop them in house, get them from a third party, or is it just excel gone wild?

We have a big data solution to help me manage the obscene quantity of data involved. I have a mix of third party and proprietary tools, but one never fully escapes excel. I’m oldschool and have an unhealthy love for excel, though it has many limitations, so if I need to do more advanced statistics I need to use more serious software.
