The Dragon’s Reach, Part 2
As Taimi works to save waypoints and world leaders converge on the Grove for the historic summit with the Pale Tree, the shadow of Mordremoth looms over all. Will Taimi’s waypoint device work? Having checked on this, unscrupulous individuals are triggering these e-mails. If you did not attempt to create an account in the exact timeframe in which you received such a mail, do not click the link.

We do not feel that this is a security risk, as it’s just somebody poking around to see if he/she can find a vulnerability. But deleting the mail is the best course, and submitting a ticket to ask or posting here to ask is never a bad idea!

Nanaka — This has been taken care of and you should be good to go.

For future reference, when you first log into the game, you are given the option to change game worlds in the lower left of the log-in or character selection screen. Click “World Selection” and choose any world that does not say “Full.” Click “Transfer” on your chosen new world, and then you will see the cost in the lower left of that pop-up window. Only if you click “Transfer” as second time will you be charged and will you make the change in game worlds.

If you do not wish to pay gems, you do have the option that you mentioned. It’s part of the many transfer details outlined here: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/World#Transferring

There is a limitation of one transfer per seven days.

Tried two different debit cards. Both gave the “Unexpected error has occurred. Please try again later” Getting this with both cards on my account as well as my girlfriends account. Would appreciate any help. Ive tried keeping all info lowercase with no success. Cant find any other info and yes ive submitted a ticket.

Hey, it’s my first time with this game, and it’s already painful, yesterday i have bought GW2, and started downloading, but after 5h i had 0%, and like ~50MBs downloaded.. I have noticed that download speed is spiking from 0.01Kb/s to 3 Mb/s, but its still not downloading. I have tried editing Hosts file, but its not working.

Are you still experiencing this issue? We have a merged thread about issues with installing or re-installing the game, but I wasn’t sure if you were having the same problem. Can you give me an update on your situation? Thanks.

The Connection Error 7:11:3:191:101 issue is still under review and will be corrected for everyone as soon as a fix is developed, tested, and implemented into the game. At this time, you should not submit a ticket because the matter will be corrected for all when the game is updated. We will be closing all existing tickets on this matter with a general update.

We apologize for this inconvenience and thank you for your understanding. (Please note our update of 7 August which suggested that for a few players, resetting their modem corrected the matter.)

The gem pool expands when players trade in gems for gold. If you assume two stockpiles of currency, it works pretty much exactly like you would expect.

You have mentioned in the past (if I recall correctly) that the Gem/Gold ratio isn’t purely based on the exchange, though.

Are there restrictions in place to prevent the rate from dropping too low?
(i.e. Let’s say a group of people collaborated to buy millions of gems and trade them for gold in an attempt to drastically reduce the ratio of Gold to Gems.)

If they all hit “Exchange” at once while the rate was very favorable, they could amass a large amount of gold prior to the rate dropping.

If, say, 100 Gems then dropped from being worth 10g to 1g… They could easily buy back gems and, in effect, cheat the system.

Are there restrictions in place to prevent this?

Yes, there are restrictions to prevent any major player from forcing the exchange into a place they could flip money back and forth to generate wealth.

Agreed. I would even pay a one-time (or yearly, or whatever) fee in gems to have a pass to a restricted area with a bank and a TP. Just stop making me load 2-3 maps every time i have to do something.

Why complain about having a bank in the mists? I would say MOST people can just press “B” click their home BL then run right around the corner to the armorsmithing station and bam…a bank. And it is free, so just give the PvP pop a bank as well. I know I would sure love one.

Someone already put up a good argument point for this statement, that WvW isn’t always accessible. Sometimes there is a queue which for players in a hurry will cause them to spend some silver to get to a place with a bank instead of going to WvW for free.

Lolololololol someone says gems and look who shows up.

This makes me sad if nothing else. I want to start a conversation between players and developer and instead I get bad mannered. I still love you though.

One a separate note, how dismissive are you? Saying that people would have to learn a 2nd set of numbers if you split skills. How stupid do you think people honestly are?
Your basically saying people are so stupid, so lazy that they can’t read a skills description, and can’t comprehend that they work differently in different game modes.

I’m not saying this is intentional on your part, but it’s sounds so ugly and dismissive of your player base. Personally it just sounds like a cop out, and excuse to put as little effort and resources into balancing your game as possible. And forget about new anything to professions, what a joke.

I don’t think that was Mr. Jonathan’s intention at all Yoh. I believe he was merely saying that skill changes between game type(WvW, PvE, and PvP) can be hard to understand and cause confusion to some players.

As a mock example, Lets say you play PvE with your awesome build that gives you 5 seconds of fury when you use a skill and your build relies on it being 5 seconds. However, we split that specific skill only in PvP and you go play and realize only after playing a few engagements that it only gives 3 seconds of fury. Then you go to WvW and realize that the skill is back to 5 seconds of Fury.

  • How does that player feel?
  • What questions is that player going to ask?
    * Is this a bug?
    * Why is it only different in PvP?
  • Who is going to answer those questions?
  • Are they going to try and seek out someone to answer these questions?
  • Is the person they (if they do ask) going to know the actual reason for this change?
  • Is that player going to stop playing PvP or GW2 all together?

The simplest change can have a huge effect on a player in any game, and when you start splitting skills and causing inconsistencies on top of balancing multiple game modes it can get a bit crazy for players to keep up. I hope this helps everyone understand what questions and thought process we go through as a team when deciding on splitting skills.

@ balance and splitting skills: Splitting the entire game into 2 (or 3, if you want to be technical: PvE, WvW, PvP) sets of #‘s creates a LOT of overhead in maintaining 3 sets of numbers. As most skills are fine across game types, it’s more efficient to split off problem skills and leave the majority of skills consistent across game types. It also means that people have a general sense of relative balance across all game types, and don’t have 2-3 sets of numbers to learn.

As she stated, it needs to be your full name for them to change it. Since it isn’t, that is why they won’t change it. Having just a first name doesn’t qualify for their change as it doesn’t cause a potential security risk.

I agree it is a little confusing. But adding the explanatory bit, like (e-mail address) has helped make it clearer.

Account Name: Your e-mail address with which you log in to the game
Display Name: The name that is shown in the game, such as Gamer.1234. Display Names always have four random numbers after them.
Character Name: The name given any of the characters on a particular account.

It’s a single-use gadget. You need to be facing the Peacemaker you’re trying to knock out when you use it.

Knocking them out manually also works—you can just beat them up if that’s your preference. The Order of Whispers is results oriented.

To be very clear, this forum isn’t designed for appeals of account suspensions or terminations. If your ticket has not been answered in three days or more, or if you believe that there has been some sort of issue — not that you disagree, but that something seriously wrong happened within the ticket or it has not been responded to in a significant amount of time — you may post in the Tickets for Review thread above.

But keep in mind: We get dozens of appeals a day from RMT workers and cheaters who would have us believe that the evidence in front of our noses isn’t proof of a breach of the UA and/or RoC. If you’re using a third-party program, please don’t waste your and our valuable time by submitting a pointless appeal that will be rejected.

I apologize if that sounded cranky, but the number of these incidents is growing:

  • “My friend didn’t cheat!”
  • Careful review, after one, two, even three previous reviews
  • Yep, he cheated. And “he” might even be “you” using one of a large number of RMT accounts.
  • Outcome: The only possible outcome: Appeal denied. Again. And again.

This happens. And these dishonest posts may give legitimate players the impression that a lot of errors are made in relation to account terminations, which is not the case. The number of errors is small. The number of reversals is very small.

So before posting, consider using the correct thread, and only that thread. And… choose wisely.

And I’m at the same IP. It hasn’t changed. The emails reflect that it hasn’t changed.

My account hasn’t been messed with. My characters and items are all fine, so I don’t know why it’s acting as if I’m always logging in from somewhere new all of a sudden. I’m not using any programs that hide or change my IP. I’ve literally done nothing different than what I was doing yesterday, yet it’s already had me do this three times – one being just to log into the forums.

I can get in once I authorize my account, of course, it just shouldn’t be necessary to do it.

Could your ISP use a dynamic-IP system? If that’s the case, you might have to approve several times in order to get all the potential IP addresses onto your approved list.

Yes.

@: Balance: it’s something we’re definitely keeping in mind as we experiment with different game types. Some things carry over just fine from Conquest, others become weaker, and others become stronger. It’s inherent/to be expected in having different goals in different game modes.

I can’t give out too much info, but I can let you know that we are working on a new game mode.

One of the main goals with splitting the balance discussions up into segments was to allow us to survey the feedback on each individual change more effectively. It’s a lot easier for us to sift through two professions worth of feedback every two weeks than it is to sort through all eight at once. We’re happy with most of the changes, but they’re by no means final, and like every other balance update we’re open to being swayed.

Good show. It was nice to hear their thoughts on the issues raised. Hopefully ArenaNet was listening and uses the feedback to fill the glass up.

I caught the latter half of yesterday’s show while it was still live and went back and rewatched it from the beginning afterwards. Overall, I really enjoyed the show, and it really took me back to my pre-ArenaNet days. It’s crazy to think it’s been over a year since the last SotG, and I’m happy to see that DPS has picked up the mantle. I think this style of show is a great way for players to express their thoughts in an easily digestible format, and it provides considerable insight on player perspective for our dev team.

These shows are also a great way to disseminate knowledge from high-tier players. Meta formation is usually a trickle-down effect, with the top-players developing new team compositions and strategy. Quick communication of meta shifts can change the gameplay experience across the skill spectrum. On this note, and very closely related to what my role is at ArenaNet – I think providing more incentive for players to take competition seriously will help teams venture out of their comfort zones – forcing them to try something new and unexpected to one-up their competition. We’re already seeing this in NA/EU as teams shy away from the traditional bunker linchpins and move towards skirmish/rotation-focused team comps.

Regarding events (my area of expertise), I think there were a lot of great points presented by the players. I work very closely with Mistpedia, DPS, ESL, etc – and we try to cater our events to what works best for both the administrators and organizers, as well as the players participating in the event. I think what makes ToL a great event for us to start with is the fact that it touches players from a wide range of skill levels – you don’t need to be able to beat APeX or Team Mist to feel rewarded for your time. That said, I’m always working to improve our existing tournament structures within the confines of what’s reasonable. I’ll be working to address some of the points raised by the players.

Going forward, one of my main priorities is going to be providing a more competitive outlet for our most dedicated and hardcore players. Exclusive and compelling rewards for our most skilled players is our first step towards that goal. Events like the All-Stars tournament is a great added bonus.

One final note – while I’m greatly appreciative of the love from my fellow friends and players give me (I knew most of you before I came to ArenaNet), I’d like to remind you that everything we work on is absolutely a team effort. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not just Karl, Evan and I sitting in a corner working on PvP or balance. Every project at ArenaNet involves programmers, directors, designers, artists, producers, QA, and even backseat designers like me! Our team is comprised of incredibly talented individuals, all dedicated to improving PvP in every conceivable way. We’re just as eager to get there as you guys are.

The team reviewed this twice, and I just took another look with a senior agent. The account was involved in the disallowed use of a third party program, such as a bot program, and there is no evidence that it was accessed by anyone other than the owner.

You may continue to discuss with the team, but this really appears to be a closed matter.

Testing has confirmed that for many players, resetting their modem may correct this issue. To be clear, this does not work for every player. However, if you would kindly give this a try, it may get things back to normal for you.

I’ve always wondered what drives the Gold to Gems conversion rate? I remember someone (you?) stating it started with a large pool of Gems and no Gold. Now, almost two years later it would seem to have changed to the other way around.

I would expect when we spend our converted Gems at the gem store they go to Bit Heaven and now are out of circulation. So, where do new Gems come from that affect the conversion rate? If players convert Gem into Gold that adds back into the pool right?

Not complaining at all. In fact, the Gold to Gem exchange has always seemed more than fair as a concept regardless of the exchange rate or other white noise in the system. As a player I commend both you and Anet for supporting the Exchange. But I am curious under what conditions does the Gem Pool expand?

The gem pool expands when players trade in gems for gold. If you assume two stockpiles of currency, it works pretty much exactly like you would expect.

Once again, the Skill Bar will air on Ready Up tomorrow at noon PDT (1900 UTC).

Tomorrow’s segment will cover the thief and warrior professions. For your feedback, please feel free to open a new thread (for each profession previewed) in the profession balance subforum after the preview and I’ll make sure the balance team knows where to find it.

The Skill Bar segment is a prerecorded balance preview. Each segment will cover 2 professions and Karl will talk about the changes as they are demonstrated. We decided to prerecord these segments because it allows us to cut down each profession from over 15 minutes to about 5 while still allowing us to show off the changes without making you wait for Karl to make build changes on the fly.

Question:

I dont know how involved you have been with the chinese version of the client but in terms of game economics/mechanics (for example crafting or forge recipes), was there something that was implemented differently than in the US/NA client?
I know that you cant comment on future changes, so i dont want to know which changes might be coming over to us but maybe there is something that you handled differently over there because the market and economy was starting from scratch and when implementing it over here, it would cause too much upset to price equilibriums.

China is largely the same game. We felt like we did a good job with the original GW2 and so we carried that over. What China did get was all the adjustments we made over the last year+ to fix mistakes in the west, so they started on a better foot over there.

Pretty sure we updated targeting some many months ago to tighten up the vertical selection distance (on level 3). The goal was to better allow selection over/behind people’s heads and selecting people on geometry like bridges. The change was very slight though, so I doubt it would impact your experience.
If you’ve been away for extra long, there’s a new option to disable right-click interact which helps prevent deselects.

If you run past the green marker and interact with the actual city gate you should be able to exit to the city proper.

However once you do that the portal stone will no longer take you back to your original map.
