Thanks for the feedback everyone. The response to 2,1,1 is mixed, so I thought I would inform everyone that we will be changing it to 5,4,3. This is intended to go out around the same time as Episode 4.
For population balance reasons, we’ve lowered the population thresholds for a world to be considered ‘Full’. This is to keep the population disparity between high pop and low pop servers more similar.
Hey folks,
We’ve seen a few questions about this, so I wanted to let everyone know. We will not be turning off the Year of the Ascension achievements. It will still be possible to work towards the Ascension backpack/glider in Season 6 and beyond.
Thanks!
Ben
I use Princess, Star of Gratitude, and Sentient Anomaly. It’s not instant, but I find it effective. In fact, I’m now happy to get Dragonite Ore!

If this is fixed, do you know if it would take effect for old games?
Yeah, it’ll take effect for old games. The stored data is correct — there’s a date/duration for each game — the API frontend is just misinterpreting the date as the start date rather than the end date.
Should have it fixed by the end of the week.
I love it, and Sharm did a great job!

Could you provide some more data? Like, expected start/end, actual start/end for a match or two?
EDIT: nm, Evan poked around in the code for me and you’re totally right; the date the API is reading is the end date, and it’s adding the duration to that. Tracking issue.

There’s been a hitch in the plans of worlds getting hitched, such that this World Link update won’t happen until one week later, on January 6th. This won’t delay/offset future world link updates.
The next link will be December 30th.
Completed hero points are available from /v2/characters/name/heropoints with the progression scope. For the rest of the bits, there’s an open issue that I haven’t had time to implement yet.
I was wondering: I can check with the team, of course, but perhaps the “free play” period was designed to allow people to get into the map, choose their location, and be ready to start a round of songs. If that was eliminated, might there be complaints about how we players are always joining in the middle of a session, which means we’d lose the ability to get maximum rewards? I’m just speculating here, but it crossed my mind.
That looks like a confession to never having completed a single full session of Bell Choir in the 4 years that it has been around…
There is already a break between every song to wait for new players.
No confession whatsoever. This year, so far, captured in screenshots. Clearly I play.

I’ll add my anecdotal experiences with joining Bell Choir. I rarely get the error message either the OP or Gaile mentioned. I do often run into the issue of joining during free play. I don’t agree with the idea that this occurs simply because free play is the longest part of Bell Choir. If that was the case, I would expect to join Bell Choir at random times during its length. I simply don’t see that. I reliably join within 30 seconds of the tenth minute(right at the beginning) or within 30 seconds of the fourth minute (Free play). I have found no reliable way to influence which scenario plays out. Neither quitting immediately and re-joining or waiting out the free play time seem to change the chances of getting a working instance. It is extremely frustrating to join during free play over and over, repeatedly watching loading screen after loading screen.
I will agree with Blockhead about the chances of seeing a fix. This undocumented feature has been a part of Bell Choir long enough too call it tradition.
Since a lot of people leave at the start of Free play, the matchmaking tries to fill these empty spaces. It is much rarer to have people leaving in the middle of the songs, that is why you get either at the beginning or the end.
This makes sense to me, too.
I just ran a test — casual, not official.
Most of the time, I got in before a round started, but occasionally I got in, chose my part, and then went “Ugh, free play.” I think it can be particularly noticeable because if you don’t look at the score, you may think you’re ready to start the first piece, then it’s wait for free play to run out, then wait for the next round to start. The free-play is the longer period, as I said, but there’s also the whole spin-up time for the new one, so it becomes even more noticeable. I mean, I could time it to the second, but I think y’all know what I mean — it’s the larger chuck of time.
As for fixing it, I’m not sure if that’s possible. I’m trying to think how that would work: Would you get blocked at the entrace with a “The round is in session” message? Would you get that message inside the map, if you clicked on the snowman and he told you, “We’re currently in free play; check back later?” I’m wondering what would be the best mechanic, because certainly it’s not possible to spin up a new round when ever a single player enters the map.

I’ve been playing a lot of Bell Choir lately. (Love it!) I have worked around the problems you mention by leaving the instance and rejoining if I get the error message. (I get it quite rarely, actually.) I think the situation where you are joining during the free-play is coincidental — I don’t think that is an issue. Free play, after all, runs longer than any particular song phrase, right? If that is true — and it seems true to me — then it would be sort of mathematically probable that you might hit that longer session more often.
Please also remember that if you get a message about the world being full when you try to enter the instance, you should try again right away. I’ve never had to try more than twice to get into the Bell Choir in that manner. (Sometimes I go through the gate, sometimes I accept through the NPC — either will work.)
We’re sorry for the occasional issues that arise, but I hope that the suggestions above will be helpful to you. See you on that magical, musical circle!

After an internal review, we’ve decided that awarding points for achievements that are this exclusive goes against the intent and spirit of our achievement system. We’ll be removing the points on these in a future release.
Also all those games are on thief, maybe you could switch up your play a bit and then come back to thief.

This thread doesn’t seem to have the potential to provide any meaningful or factual communication. The developers work on, and care about, all modes of gameplay. WvW has been given unprecedented levels of communication, interaction, and engagement in recent months, so the timing of these comments is particularly ironic. I can only assume that someone did an anecdotal post count and concluded that there’s some sort of bias in favor of PvP. Yet in another period of time, the counts might lean towards any other gameplay mode.
ArenaNet developers work on, care about, and support the different modes of playing Guild Wars 2 with equal passion, dedication, and interest.

I have reproduced this internally and I see the issue. And yes, it’s all my fault…
The fix should be included in the next patch. Unfortunately as I missed our hotfix deadlines, that could be a while ;_;
Until then, you do not have to reset the entire instance to fix this.
The bug occurs when the game destroys the wisp that you are holding, which happens on the event failure. If you drop the wisp, you are not affected. When the event fails, each player who had a wisp destroyed can log out, and log back in, and then they should be able to pick up wisps again.
I am very sorry for this inconvenience. I can see this making swampland runs quite tedious if you are wiping :c send me your hate mail and I will open it with shame.
If you are using MMR to pair teams, why are 1,4,2,3 even being teamed with 8,9,10’s? That’s why this system continues to frustrate people.
Because it’s a 10 player game. Those 10 players could have the exact same rating in the best case scenario.
Am I misunderstanding what you are saying. 1-10 denotes skill or simply the number of players?
Just ordering of skill. The skill range could be big or small. (hopefully small)
Hey Evan,
Just wanted to take a quick moment to ask that if in the future, you would consider implementing a “hard cap” on initial tier placements (can’t place higher than gold3, plat1, etc).
While it’s true I don’t know your exact algorithm and 10 placement matches is a generally accepted industry standard for a multitude of good reasons, as a player, judging from my own experience and observations as well as some others; the perception is that the placement matches have over or under-inflated peoples placements.
With a cap, it just seems like you could still place people within proper thresholds accurately, but then people wouldn’t be able to play the “place and beat the decay” game, at least, not if they wanted those higher tiers, which would “force” people into participating in more matches than a lot currently have (granted we’re only 2-3 days in).
This would help the system gather more statistics and place people more accurately and with a higher indication of their actual skill tier than the way it appears currently, not to mention there being a larger pool of players to create matches from since people would still have the incentive to play for more than just beating MMR decay (I hear reports from friends in higher tiers of games being scarce, and I assume they’d also be less evenly matched since the longer the matchmaker works, the more the rating threshold opens up to try to create a match).
Granted I didn’t really need to explain it all, but I did so in case you do actually decide to respond and do one of those “separate perception from reality” things that you do.
We talked about capping placement and opted to have less restrictions. One thing I would consider is lowering the default rating deviation so people don’t fly around as much and soft reset has more meaning.

I’m excited to finally have MMR out in the open. We can get some great community feedback like what professions dominate which skill ratings to better handle player perception. We have metrics like this internally, but its super tedious to look up the skill rating of every player that gives balance feedback on the forums.
Now if only skill raiting showed up when you posted on the pvp forums, you could weed out the actual threads pretty quickly
It’s not that things need weeding. It’s just good that players have rating available as a data point when making suggestions and giving feedback. Something like:
“I have sub 1k rating and hate playing against X”
“Well I have over 2k rating and X is terrible”
This is way more helpful to us!

Soft reset: (Previous Rating + 1200) * 0.5
However, everyone’s deviation got reset, so your still move up and down a lot from this new rating. Why even include the old rating? Since higher MMR was detrimental (higher queue times, harder to earn pips) a lot of people did not care if MMR was low.
So that the esl players would have less of a chance to match up against people who bought the game last month. It would have been much more chaotic with that approach.
Yes. We’ve done a full reset before and it was awful. Keeping everyone’s relative position means matchmaking isn’t completely random at the start of the season.
