I have said it before and it clearly bears repeating, our focus is on making improvements to WvW as a game type. When we implement changes it is with that goal in mind. We are aware of the GvG scene and we think it is really impressive, but the effects of any of our changes on GvG as it currently exists are not a priority for us. As such, when changes do come in, like the new map, some of them will be a positive for the GvG crowd and some will not. However, none of the changes we make are intended to stamp out GvG nor are they intended to make GvG more popular. When/if we focus our attention on GvG we will do our utmost to make it a game type that fits the needs of as many people as possible. That time is not now.

We are focused on WvW right now and improving it. Please try not to conflate our decisions in regards to WvW as some sort of judgement or endorsement of GvG in any form.

Thank you for the reports.

Worry not, I assure you that we’re still in the process of making further optimizations to the audio engine.

Also, for the record, the sound card hasn’t got much to do with how sounds are cached and processed. Actually, that’s what the system memory and processor are for! The sound card merely facilitates playback to your listening device (speakers/headphones), and what receives input from a non-USB microphone if you’re using voice chat. Unless something is seriously wrong with your sound card, upgrading it isn’t going to help, and it definitely isn’t going to allow for more sounds to play or improve the results of how the audio engine handles individual sound files. That’s just not what sound cards do.

EDIT:

I appreciate that you looked for results on multiple machines, Alad QB. This not only helps you troubleshoot the problem, determining that your hardware isn’t to blame, but also helps lend credence to the fact that there are indeed still more optimizations to be made with our engine.

I would leave the Gold in the mail as is (not returned and not accepted), and immediately contact the Anet Support Team. If this other account was indeed being used to funnel RMT Gold, your account runs the risk for a perma ban. It will appear that you were the one who made the transaction, and that is not good.

Let Anet tell you what to do with the mail. If they tell you to delete it, do so. If they say keep it, then it’s ok to keep.

Yes, please DO contact Support! It would be a help to remove what appears from this info to be a gold delivery agent!

Unfortunately, guild banks and/or all influence stays on the world in which they were created. Only your personal account items (such as your account bank) transfer with you. Even those in a cross-server guild can not access the guild bank on any server but their own home world (which they have to create and build up themselves).

From the Official GW2 Wiki: If you move your account to another world, the guild vault will not transfer with you (IE. Guild vaults are restricted to the world where they were created).

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Guild_Bank

This is as intended, so that guilds can amass benefits on multiple worlds, should they wish to do so. More info here: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Guild_Bank

Any idea if the drop-rate on normal continue coins was nerfed in this patch (as opposed to April)?

I’m sure ANet will just claim that it was “higher than we wanted” (as has happened with dyes and such).

The drop rate of continue coins in JP chests is identical to what it was in April. Continue coins are also more abundant since one drops out of each Zone completion chest.

Pleasure to meet you (virtually, at least). I played Brute Force years ago while at Microsoft. It was fun. I watched some friends play Wing Commander when I was in high school. I didn’t have a gaming Windows machine until I entered the work force some years later, so I missed out on some of the classics.

Guild Wars 2 Narrative Lead

The giant tent over the Great Collapse is a great idea, but a real jamboree like that wouldn’t have been so secretive – there should have been NPCs – citizens, children, guards, etc – excited, happy, and concerned about the large event before it happened.

That’s called a “preamble” in narrative terms, and it is quite useful in moving a story along. ANet has been effective at keeping a story going into the next segment for stragglers who were just one achievement behind, but they also should be foreshadowing the next part of the living story, both to give the living story a narrative link through events, but also to reveal details that will become important in the next section and tie up loose ends in the previous one. Any loose ends not tied up could and should be considered a foreshadow in and of itself that it will come back later to be revisited. Annual events don’t need to be tied up in any way other than seeing NPCs cleaning up from the event, whereas build up beforehand would be nice to give a sense of impending excitement.

And don’t be that store that starts playing Xmas music in September (I’M LOOKING AT YOU LOWES!). That’s a bit too far in advance. Just a little foreshadowing and preamble would be nice.

We do this when we have the bandwidth, but it’s sometimes difficult to find the time and resources while juggling so many self-contained releases. I agree, though, that it’s an effective way of connecting things together, and we should strive to implement them more often.

R. L. Stein Jr. is no ‘Jovial Bob’…

I don’t believe we know each other outside of the forums, so that statement is a little…strange.

…but I could really get behind a trail of in-game books. Providing, of course, those books are logged into an interface that would put them in order and allow me to read them at my own leisure.

The original plan was to have in-game books somewhat like the ones made available in the GW1 Bonus Mission Pack content. We wrote nearly 100 of them but were unable to implement them due to the book tech getting cut from development in the months leading up to GW2’s release. We may revisit the idea one day.

I’m just so sick of website-exclusive stories that are not even hinted at in-game, aside from the launcher window, that is.

Design discussions regarding the updated story interface are ongoing, but the plan is to group narrative information and player progress together like how we handle the Personal Story entries, but for other content types.

Just to clarify, while the character named Moto is an obvious homage to Shigeru Miyamoto, his personality and behavior within the SAB story context are not at all inspired by any real life person or events. Don’t read into the character expecting some sort of life commentary or biographical similarity to the legendary game designer. It’s simply not there.

To quote an oft-used phrase: “All characters appearing in this work are fictitious. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.”

Your girlfriend updated today, quoting me liberally in her update. Please do not continue to misuse the forums for this matter. Discuss in the ticket. And at the core, it appears from a cursory review of the ticket that she was not able to prove ownership of the account, so hacked or not hacked, cheated or not cheated, at the core we need to be sure we’re assisting the account’s owner. Personally there have been about ~10 locations where I preferred to use the dodge-jump. I’m not sure, what the design philosophy is behind the dodge-jump, and if you think this usage is legit or not. The jumps above the bell is one of the locations I think the dodge jump was really really helpful if not necessary.

The dodge jump is never necessary. Me and QA make sure we do all our test passes without it.

Congrats on designing one of the most blatantly obvious (but still devious) money grabs I’ve ever seen implemented in an MMO cash shop.

Cranking the difficulty all the way up to “insane” for world 2 NORMAL mode, implementing an hard mode based on trial and error, reducing lives from 5 to 1, brutally reducing the amount of baubles with which you used to be able to buy continue coins, AND introducing the infinite continue coin which can only be purchased from the shop.

I’m assuming you already have the “real” world 2 normal mode ready to go live as soon as the bean counters think they’ve gotten enough money off all of this.

You’re brilliant, Josh. In a different way from what most of the people here are meaning it, but still brilliant

That’s not how things work here. I don’t tell the commerce team how to do their job and they don’t tell me how to do my job. My goal is to make a really fun and compelling experience for players. Insofar as W2 is not fun right now because of the crazy difficulty, that’s on me because I made some poor judgement calls. I lost the forest for the mechanic-trees. I liked this tree and this tree and this tree and this tree… and jammed them all in without taking the big picture in often enough, especially near the end when everything comes together and starts interacting in unpredictable ways. Last time we were just excited to get 8-bit UI, a bounce mushroom and turtles you could knock over for platforms. Now we have projectile enemies, ice, moving platforms, water spout platforms, spin flowers, push blocks, several cooperative puzzles, etc. Now I know next time to give the elements time to breathe, and go hands-off earlier, and if a last minute fix is required to make a new mechanic work (what happened to the water spouts that ended up making them terribad) it should be cut and saved for next time. These are the reasons World 2 is too hard. If the reason was to sell coins I would not be here and you would not see a huge suite of fixes we put together over the last couple of days come out tomorrow.

As to the Infinite Continue Coin I’ll repeat what I said several pages back. I think it’s a great item because it expands the number of people who can experience SAB. There’s probably a good-sized portion of players who don’t want to play it like a real stand-alone old-school game where you have to really learn the levels, find the secrets, earn the resources to get the power-ups etc. In that way it’s like a Game Genie. It also gives people who are really into SAB a chance to vote with their money and support future development.

We decided to do Tribulation Mode in the platform hell style back before we launched the first SAB. Before the idea of an ICC was ever thought up. It matches our personality and humor. We knew there would be people who were really really good at SAB and would wrack up huge numbers of extra lives, and thought Trib Mode would be a great way to spend them.

As to a ‘real’ World 2, that will have to wait for next release when we have time to make the major renovations necessary to put it in the proper context between Worlds 1 and 3. In the mean time, check out the changes we made and see if it’s more fun for you.

It was too easy! Tribulation Mode complete!

I doubt you will get the answer you are looking for, as I doubt that ArenaNet is going to give you information that could possibly lead to what their detection methods for illegal third-party programs are. If that information gets known, it could allow the producers of those programs re-engineer them so as to avoid detection better.

Exactly.

Sabotage — you are free to update the ticket — or have the account owner do so, as appropriate — to ask your questions, but we’re not going to provide that information here and quite honestly, by the time it’s gone through so many reviews, we are quite sure that the person whose account was terminated knows exactly what caused that termination, and is asking for unacceptable reasons. I truly understand why this question would be asked in a case of a false positive, but if I remember this correctly, the case was received many times and the data just didn’t show room for question. In fact, in most cases I’ve seen, the data is very clear and very conclusive.

I’d like Josh to gather points of view from places other than the forum before he decides to start hacking away at his work of art.

I’ve been developing games since ‘96. I’ve been around the block long enough to know that the forums are not the best place to get accurate readings of most player’s perceptions. The reason I’m adjusting the difficulty is 1. So much of it is from mechanics that surprised us with how poorly they perform out in the field. and 2. I never really felt good about how hard it was but didn’t get the confirmation of it until this thread. We’ve found ways to fix the major difficulty spikes in Infantile and Normal Modes, and we’ll do some more refining and maybe a systemic change (Making bottomless pits and dart traps reset you at the last waypoint with one heart removed.) by the time World 3 comes out.

It’s obvious from my above post I love SAB. I’ll make no apologies for that. I also believe there are legitimate problems and struggles people are having. There are some things that need adjustment, and some places where Josh was a little over zealous. I just don’t think you listed any of them.

Agreed. Good post. We are approaching the development of SAB as its own game (As Moto would) so if people don’t go into it with that mindset they will get frustrated. I’m open to suggestions about how we can communicate that better.

when falling to the void , teleport the player to the last checkpoint, not decrementing a life (= back to the “no falling damage” concept, without having to redesign the entire maps)

We wanted to do this for the hot fix going out, (Well, actually taking one heart when you fall in a pit or hit the darts) but we’d have to get into the guts of the scripting and that’s too risky to put up in the Live game right now. But we’ll definitely try to do that for our next release to get World 2 to the right level of difficulty to fit in our full 1-4 Worlds difficulty curve.

A good example of this is in World 1, right after the maze. There’s a rock right before the queen beedog, that you must jump on, and then on to a tree, to escape the area. And while it’s such a simple jump, I could be wasting many minutes just trying to get that simple jump. And it isn’t for my lack of skill, it just seems the collision is so dodgy. And those kinds of jumps are all over the later worlds. It’s not so much the length of the jump, but the height of it. It seems my character can often barely made it on top of the platform.

One thing you have to learn about how our jumping/collision works is that you can’t jump up against things and slide up and over the lip like any normal platformer. You need to start your jump further back. I know this is frustrating and if I had the power to change it I most certainly would. Along with making player’s collision match their body/size, and not hang out over the sides of things. As I’m trying to push the skill of jumping it means I’ve had to bring these wonky issues to the forefront. That’s unfortunate, but in my opinion it’s worth doing for the sake of more interesting jumping challenges.

I also noticed a couple of serious collision issues in Tribulation Mode. The large spiked floors do some really weird things, where they sometimes do not kill you (and you can run through them), and sometimes kill you when you’re not even touching them. It is as if something activates, and then repeatedly keeps killing you, no matter if you are touching the spikes or not. I was on a platform high above the spikes, and they still killed me, and continued killing me as I spawned. That’s clearly a bug.

These sounds like lag bugs.

There’s also a few stores in TM that spawn you into the lava as you exit. Is that intended?

No. Can you please describe or screen shot those places? I’d appreciate it.

Difficulty wise, the only trouble I’ve really had is with the logs across the waterfall. That thing is extremely unforgiving, and it slows everything down.

I’ve added a safety spot that will be in the fix. It’s about 90% easier now.

And of course the dojo, with that blasted gong (But I guess Anything Goes…. right Josh?). Thanks for putting that in.The bit where you cover the arrowslits from four angles was clever, but I was often infuriated how the traps would shoot right through a block that was clearly obstructing the firing mechanism.

The gong temple has been tweaked so you only have to switch sides once and there’s plenty of time to do so. When you say the darts are going through the blocks are meaning while they move or when they are in place?

Hey folks,

I believe the Orb is still giving +power but the text is missing on the tooltip. Regardless, we have the issue in the tracker and we’ll have it fixed as soon as we can.

Thanks for the report!

Howdy, Super Adventurers!

Since there appears to be some confusion about how you gain progress on Scholar and Academic, here’s a list of what you need to do in order to receive the achievements.

  • You must be in the Mode you want the achievement progress for.
  • You must be near the reward chest at the end of the zone.
  • You must wait for the timer in the top right corner to reach zero and move you to the next zone.
  • You must not be in the continue area (The Moto Room).

If you do all of the above, the achievement should progress.
