Thanks for the report, folks. We have the issue in our tracker.
The love has arrived. I’ll sort out this list and make sure that anything that hasn’t been previously reported gets added to our tracking system.
Thanks for the reports. (And compiling the list!)
PS: A lot of this stuff we’re already aware of. (We’re always watching!)

Hi, everyone. Just wanted to pass on some comments from Angel herself:
Angel McCoy, Narrative DesignerHi, everybody!
I thought I’d drop in under a flag of sincerity and respond to some of the comments I’m seeing here. You all are so passionate about both Guild Wars and GW2 lore: it does my heart good. Thanks for being so completely awesome and for putting so much of yourselves into your discussions of the lore.
To better frame my comments and because many of you aren’t familiar with me: I’ve been working on GW2 for 5 years and 9 months. Prior to my employment, I was a GW player for several years. I did some freelance at that time for ArenaNet to help write a GW atlas that never actually got published, but it meant that I spent a lot of time learning the world. My point is that I love Tyria every bit as much as you do, and I’ve dedicated almost as much time as many of you have to it.
I completely understand the outrage some of you feel, thinking that I’ve retconned things in a vacuum. I’d like to give you some peace of mind. Prior to my sending it off, the interview you read received a thumbs up from Bobby Stein, Ree Soesbee, Jeff Grubb, and Scott McGough. I do not work in a bubble, and if I’m releasing that much lore, then I’m going to do my best to ensure I’m getting it right. And it definitely feels like I’m sticking my neck out in the effort. No pressure. Hehe.
When you are working in a world that is as huge as Tyria and that has had as many lore creators as Tyria has, it can be difficult to make all the pieces fit perfectly together. And yet, we do the best we can.
————-
So, let me explain where some of these lore decisions came from. They and many others are based on the following needs:
1. The fact that GW2 takes place 250 years in the future after GW.
2. The added complications that come with GW2 being non-human-centric. We’re no longer telling a human story, but a multiracial story, and that means only one of five races have the “gods” as part of their world construct. The lore needs to not only make sense for all races, but actually be relevant to them.
3. We want to evolve the lore, not rewrite it, but not just recycle what was already there either. We want to reveal new layers in the onion and expose secrets that even GW players didn’t know.
————-When you think of the history of Tyria from a non-human standpoint or, broader still, from a pan-racial standpoint, you begin to realize that not everything the people of Tyria believed 250 years ago is actually the whole truth. Just like I was taught in grade school (not quite 250 years ago—hehe) that Christopher Columbus discovered America and Thanksgiving was all about the Pilgrims having turkey dinner with the Native Americans. Just like that, the people of Tyria may have had only a partial or biased view of historic events. Some Tyrian historians might have gotten it wrong. Others might have recorded things in a manner that suited their agenda. Thus, when you quote a scholar from that era, it’s not unlike quoting pre-Socratic scholars in the real world who believed the Earth was flat. At some point, a Durmand Priory scholar or an asuran researcher questioned whether these historians were right or not. Sometimes they were; sometimes they weren’t. Sometimes, they only knew part of the story. We want to give you more of the story.
There is a stream of truth that runs through all previous GW lore, and that stream is what we hope to tap. We are not going to throw away huge bundles of GW lore. Events happened. What you may find evolving, however, are the explanations for why and what exactly did happen. We will NOT handle the lore with cavalier carelessness, I promise you. On the contrary, we spend a great deal of time studying old lore so we can base our expanded lore on it.
Now, let me give you a few confirmations on some of the things you’ve been saying:
> The Seers created the first Bloodstone to set some magic aside during the last rise of the Elder Dragons. They didn’t want to see it all consumed.
> Magic existed long before the first Bloodstone. It has always been a force in the Eternal Alchemy. It was not created by the humans’ gods, no matter what priest or priestess preaches thakittenwas. How you choose to roleplay your character’s beliefs is entirely up to you.![]()
> Humans (including Canthan humans) were brought to Tyria (from…no spoilers!). They are not native to Tyria and did not come with much magic of their own. From a human perspective and oral tradition (that can get warped over time), they say the gods were giving them magic, but the reality was that the dragons had gone back to sleep, and the gods felt it was safe to begin returning magic stored in the Bloodstone to Tyria. The gods (not only Abaddon) “unsealed” the Bloodstone and magic flowed back into the world. Humans and other sentient races of the time began using it.
> Over the course of hundreds of years, wars broke out. King Doric begged the gods to slow the flow of magic back into Tyria and the gods granted his wish by shattering the Bloodstone into pieces and limiting their use. Abaddon was annoyed by this.
For many of us players, it’s only been a couple years since Abaddon’s tantrum, but for Tyrians, it’s been much longer. The gods have been gone. Generations have lived and died. The world’s understanding and control of magic has grown and improved. The understanding of the cosmos (the Eternal Alchemy) has improved. And yet, there’s still so much the people of Tyria don’t know.![]()
250 years ago in our real world, it was 1763. It would be another 12 years before the American Revolution even started. Compare the scientific/medical knowledge and industrial level of the time with how it is today, and you’ll see just how much progress can be made in 250 years. Of course, Tyria hasn’t advanced as quickly as we have. They don’t have cars or Internet or Post-It™ notes. But, their cultures have evolved. They have a greater understanding of how the world works. And, they have better means of communication and travel across long distances. Thus, we can now write more intricate and bigger stories for them.
I wish I could answer each of your questions and concerns, but the reality is that I need to work on the next GW2 Living World release. We’re cruising at 200mph on these releases (to quote Stephen Clarke-Willson).I hope this explanation of our lore philosophy and where our thinking is will help you when you go back and review the pieces of your discussion. Thank you again for your passion! Know that we do pay attention, even if we can’t always take the time to respond to forum discussions like this.

Worry not, a fix is inbound.
You could increase rewards for defending by simply increasing rewards for killing enemy players, since defending logically implies fighting off enemy players. That would be less subject to abuse than increasing the rewards for the current “defend” events where you can get full participation credit by using 2 supply to repair a section of outer wall while the enemy is already beating on the inner door.
This only works when and if players are actually there. Currently, defending a dolyak can mean fighting off a wave of enemies or escorting them without seeing anyone. It should provide a reward either way, but we can’t do the latter in any good way currently.
Maybe make the Dolyaks move faster per nearby ally, increased by up to ten allies. There would be incentive to guard them since it is helping your team overall even if you are not participating in big fights/being in other areas.
Conversely there would be more incentive for the other team to split up into small teams to stop these faster dolyaks
The issue is not about an in-game reason to defend them, it is about the way we actually determine who has defended them. Currently, you can get credit by standing near them when they finish. That is clearly not a good platform for delivering rewards.
We will be adding to the line at some point and it may also involve revisiting the line as it currently functions. But yes, I agree it needs to be better.
I primarily PvE but I still don’t see the actions over the last year as reasonable attempts to make ascended items fairly available to WvW players. I don’t care what you’d like to do, I only care about what you actually do.
Speaking as someone who has only gotten Ascended gear via WvW vendors, I’d say that’s nonsense. Speaking as a developer, we are continuing to make this better, which is not to say perfect. There will be more ways to acquire the ascended mats as part of the season and we will look into adding yet additional ways after that.
It sounds annoying, but it doesn’t rise to the level of griefing in the sense that we could or would take action. We try not to get involved without rock solid proof of someone doing we feel is worthy of a ban or suspension. Not only would this likely never quite attain that level, it would be incredibly difficult to prove the intent behind any action like this. We would rather err on the side of caution in these instances.
That’s because there is no incentive to defend. You get NOTHING to defend except spare change-like wxp and karma. There literally is no reason to defend, there is more reason to let the ball drop and recap. And for a game where keeping the points you have is equally as important as gaining points from other sources, they sure do a bad job of rewarding the defense.
If you give incentive to defend, you will have the opportunity to kill something that isn’t programmed.
I said this in another thread, and I’ll repeat what I said here for clarity, the issue with rewarding defending currently is a problem with a way the content is built and how it determines participation. Until we solve that problem, we won’t be increasing the rewards for defending because it is far too easy to game the system. That is why escorting Dolyaks is not very rewarding. Once we do solve that, we will make big moves to incentivize defending so that people who are helping out, whether it be escorting yaks, or defending objectives will see more rewards for doing that.

While it is very unlikely we would put supply runs in straight up like this, it is very likely something of this nature will make its way into the game in the future. I too think there would be a serious value to allowing supply to be strategically moved by players. One note is that we would not likely set it up such that players could pull supply from a depot and move it to another directly, because that would almost definitely create some serious conflict and open the door to griefing and sabotage even more than it already is. It’s definitely on the table though.
People already harass each other over enough stuff. Whether it be builds, what profession they are running, what food they are running, and so on. I’d suggest removing the idea of controlling that from consideration when making these decisions.
This argument boils down to “Well it’s happening already. So let’s just do whatever.” I agree that people harass other people and part of what we try and do is mitigate that. So, we wouldn’t make a change that would exacerbate that, unless it had a major pay off. This doesn’t fit that criteria.
Hi there! Glad to hear the issue has resolved itself. I agree with Behellagh that your drivers should definitely be updated. Even if you’re not experiencing issues at the moment, I’d highly recommend it as it should improve your performance in game if anything.
Oh boy! Hourly fights confirmed!
I didn’t say hourly. ^_-
Tequatl will spawn in a similar fashion as the Clockwork Invasion. If an overflow is created within 10 minutes of the event spawning, he will also spawn there as well.
Hey guys,
We agree with you. This has been something that has been greatly discussed and is definitely on our radar. There isn’t a time frame set yet, but I just just wanted to let you know it is something we are looking to change for the future. Sorry I can’t give more details at this time.
I work on systems, combat, skills, and balance.
Hi Z Y C O,
Is this a new mouse that you’ve purchased? If so you’ll want to make sure that you have all the proper mouse drivers installed and updated. Beyond this, I haven’t heard of this issue happening with Mac operating systems. Are you by chance running the client with Wine or Bootcamp?
Hey there,
If you don’t have a Guild Wars 2 crash log then it’s possible this is a hardware based crash (just speculation, not saying your system isn’t up to par). In order for us to dig a bit deeper here, I’d like for you to submit a Technical Support ticket so that we can gather a bit more system info from you in order to narrow down the cause. The thread below should provide you with the info you need for getting in contact with us:
Hm, that’s definitely odd. Has this been a constant occurrence or has this only popped up after the new router?
Either way, I’d like for you to submit a support ticket so that we can better assist you one on one with this issue. The thread below should give you more info on contacting support:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/How-to-Submit-a-Technical-Support-Ticket-2/first#post3957
I’m not finding a whole lot of information on the hardware, so you may need to contact your ISP to see if you have this or a similar option, but it shouldn’t just be your router’s firewall.
Aside from that, I would recommend deleting the GW2 cache folder, disabling any security software that you have running (just so we can rule it out), and even a clean installation of your video card drivers.
Unfortunately there are a number of different causes with this kind of thing and so it’s a bit of a process of elimination.
Hi Valentine – Would you mind sharing your system specs (operating system, RAM, CPU, GPU, etc.)?
Game error crashes before download check

Hi Zanyrage,
Your Crash logs are showing CRC errors, what this means is that something has caused a file to be the wrong size and corrupted the installation. The first thing we want to rule out are issues on your drive.
Please do the following first to check and repair your drive:
1. Open Computer by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Computer.
2. Right-click the hard disk drive that you want to check, and then click Properties.
3. Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check Now. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
4. To check for both file errors and physical errors, select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
5. Click Start.
Depending upon the size of your hard disk, this may take several minutes. For best results, don’t use your computer for any other tasks while it’s checking for errors.
Once that is complete, Please navigate to your Documents > Guild Wars 2 folder and in there you should see a file called Local.dat. Delete this file.
Next:
1. Navigate to your Guild Wars 2 installation folder.
2. Right-click on “GW2.exe” and select “Create Shortcut.”
3. Rename this shortcut to “Guild Wars 2 Repair.”
4. Right-click on this shortcut and select “Properties.”
5. Edit the “Target” line to include -repair at the end.
Note: Please make sure -repair is outside of the quotes
Correctly Formatted Example: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe” -repair
Incorrectly Formatted Example: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe -repair”
6. Once completed, click “Ok” to save your changes.
If you get an error trying to save, your target line may not have the correct format. Please try step 5 again.
7. Double click “Guild Wars 2 Repair” to start the repair process.
Once completed, please try starting Guild Wars 2 again and see if this resolves your issue.
Hi Jammypack – I’d recommend putting in a support ticket so we can better assist you one on one with this one. The thread below should give you more info on doing so:
Hi Xaton – If you’re still having issues and the above troubleshooting steps didn’t resolve the issue for you, be sure that when you launch Guild Wars 2 that you’re running the application as Administrator. Aside from that, I’d recommend disabling any security software (so we can rule out any interference) and updating your system’s root certs. You can do that by following the steps below:
1. Close out of Guild Wars 2 if you have it running and go to your Documents folder. In the Guild Wars 2 folder you should have a file called Local.dat, delete this file.
2. Download the program from the link below:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/rootsupd.exe
3. Run the program. You will probably have to click ‘run’ or ‘allow’ a couple times, but after that, nothing will appear.
If you run the program and nothing happens that’s OK, it is as it should be. Once you’ve done this, log back into Guild Wars 2 to see if the issue is still happening.
This doesn’t sound like an issue with your purchases. You would get a very specific error message telling you so if that was the case.
Hope this helps!
Hi Ivonbeton – If you’re behind a router, I’d recommend bypassing this and connecting directly to your modem to rule out any issues with the router. If you’ve got a router/modem combo unit, I’d recommend disabling the SPI Firewall as this has been known to be a common culprit of this issue.
Hi Nyalani – More than likely this is a network setup configuration issue. I know it’s pretty basic, but it wouldn’t hurt to reset your router and power cycle the modem if you haven’t already done so. Beyond this, you may want to turn off QoS in the router. Sometimes when that’s on, it will only prioritize one computer and the other person’s connection suffers as a result.
Hello dried,
Would you mind posting the crash log to this thread? You can find this by navigating to Documents\Guild Wars 2 and you will want to find the ArenaNet.log file. You can then attach it to the thread by clicking “More posting & formatting options…”
Doing so would invalidate the time people spend acquiring that gear. I think the heart of your post is in the right place, but what we would rather do is make possible for people to get the gear by playing WvW with a sprinkling of PvE, rather than the other way around.
No, I could actually read it just fine. Wasn’t being sarcastic at all.

why we wont see a useful outnumbered buff:
scenario — player enters map where his server has outnumbered. server loses outnumbered. other players harass him to leave so server can be stronger.
Correct. The idea behind the buff is to incentivize you to show up even if you are outnumbered by pulling out some of the disincentive for losing a lot, but if we put anything too good on it, it will cause serious problems between players. We don’t want it to be something that people fight over, harass each other over, or generally cause a worse play experience because someone takes away the buff because it is our goal for the maps to be full and for no one to have the buff.
Also, we want to be more transparent with balance, so we’re going to be posting a list of the things that we’re working on now, so that you guys can see balance changes earlier than usual.
I’ll post that in a bit, hopefully today.

A couple of points. We are going to move more and more towards trying to increase the rewards in the rank up chests. As for the lack of rewards for defending, it is really a limitation of the way the content currently exists. We are working on solutions to it, but we always face the problem that making a major change to existing, working content is very dangerous and has to have a very long test time. Defending is super simple to get credit for right now, and because of that it’s difficult for us to put a serious amount of rewards on it. If we did, it would incentivize people to stand around, repair a wall for a second or two, then jet off. Until we fix the way that content determines who deserves rewards, we can’t bump the rewards as much as we’d like to.
We absolutely agree that defending is not rewarded well enough and we will address it when we have the best solution.
The 3 different game types and splitting skills. Splitting skills between all 3 of our game types (PvE, PvP, WvW) is very costly – it takes more time to split the skills, and then upkeep the split skills. Instead of upkeeping 1 version of a skill, whenever you make future changes, you now have to make sure all 3 are appropriately balanced for their respective game types. This is very powerful, and something we did in GW1 when we felt we needed it. We just need to be careful not to do it too much, or it means the balance team is literally balancing 3 entire games. As Freamon (from “The Wire”, btw if you haven’t seen “The Wire”, stop whatever it is you’re doing and go watch it. Unless you’re giving birth. In that case…wait until you’re done, then watch it immediately afterwards. Oh, and get your new son/daughter to watch it when they’re old enough.) usually reminded the other members of the cast, “All the pieces matter.” The different pieces of GW2 all impact the other pieces, and it’s something we must always bear in mind.
Chap’s woefully ill-conceived attempt at a metaphor on why we don’t spilt all skills off the bat: Imagine you’re in school, and in order to make sure you learn languages at an even pace, you have to split everything you do into 3 languages. For me, let’s say it’s English, Japanese and Latin (No, Greek, I liked learning Greek more than Latin). You start off answering a question on a test in 3 different languages. You rock. But then you do it more and more often. For every note you take in a lecture, you have to write it in 3 different languages. For every paper you write, you have to write it in 3 languages. For all homework, you have to do it in 3 languages. Every test. Every quiz. It may seem small at first, but if you’re not careful, you’re doing three times the work as normal.
Whether you like it or not, you guys already have 3 different games. Each game type has a different structure, different rules, and different goals. I get where you’re going with your analogy, but it’s flawed. You aren’t answering the same question in three languages. You’re answering English questions in English, Japanese questions in Japanese, and Greek questions in Greek.
The way you’re doing it now, you have to come up with a fix for one game type that doesn’t effect the other two too badly. I would argue that it takes more work to do that than it does to split the skills and balance to solve issues unique to each game type. The upkeep shouldn’t be costly at all, you just don’t fix what isn’t broken. What could be more cost effective than that?
You can argue it’s different all you want to. But as the people actually DOING the work, you’re wrong. Nice theory crafting though!
We have 3 major factors impacting all work we do for balance: time, scope (the amount of balance work we have to do), and resources (in this case, available work hours). All 3 of these pull from a finite pool of resources, and all 3 have direct causal relationships. If you increase scope (do more splitting of skills), then you can increase scope. Period. This means you’re now putting more stress on the other 2 pieces of this puzzle: time and resources. You’ve made more work. So until we extend the normal day to 26 or 27 hours, or put more days in the year (which isn’t going to happen with the earth’s current distance from the sun and rotation) it’s simply not going to happen, or it’s going to degrade the quality of work you DO get out of your hours.
And it’s more work to balance the game types differently. It still takes time to implement those changes. It doesn’t save time just by not worrying about how the changes will impact the various game types.

The stat boost, while controversial, is there to give the buff meaning in the context of the general WvW battle. Providing boosts like %WXP, etc. don’t have impact in fights against other sides, they are just a nice bonus for you. The stat boost and the points for finishing players mean that not only do you want to have the buff, but you don’t want your opponents to have it.
Awesome post, thanks for keeping the thread constructive guys!
Rating decay, randomizing solo Q games better (jumbling the teams better based on MMR) and rewards are all things we’re improving.
As for the build swakitten ue, we’re dealing with that with “Templates”, which are also something we’re excited about. It will be similar to the templates we used in GW1, which allowed you guys to easily swap builds/trade builds.
Thanks for the post guys!

If you are using Chrome, you can just add English to your list of languages from the Language settings and you will no longer be redirected. I don’t know if it works the same for other browsers though.
We read all the threads – including this one. Thanks for making the effort and taking the time OP!

P.S. Your english, while broken up a little bit, was still perfectly fine. I think I understand all the points you were making. It’s better than my rusty-kitten Japanese, so kudos to you for making the post!

MonMalthias,
Like Chap and I mentioned in the last State of the Game, we’re working in implementing a trait fact system that should give updated tooltips including radius, range, cooldown, duration, etc. That should take care of a lot of the issues you just mentioned.
No eta on that coming out, but I’ve seen it in action and it’s pretty sweet.
On topic, no. Respecs aren’t necessary because you can just get more points. If you could respec, any points beyond 300 would be pretty much irrelevant. Scheduled, very occasional respecs are okay, but people will just game the system if they have the choice to change.
This is exactly why we are taking the path we have in regards to respecs. Because of the fact that you can continue to earn WXP and World Ability Points, giving everyone a respec, even an incredibly expensive one would cause people to shift around their points as the current meta dictates. Right now, you will have the opportunity at the start of a season to rethink how your characters are set up and to spend your points accordingly, without feeling like you are forever bound to your choices. But, because you can’t just back out of them whenever, they have more weight. That’s why we have done what we have.
We’re aware of the issue and have a fix in the works.
Thanks!
We are aware of this and are taking steps to mitigate this type of play.

Greetings
I logged into the game today and everything was working fine, I lost connection once but thought nothing of it because it happens sometimes when my internet poops out.. Anyways I got disconnected and when I attempted to relog I got a message that said :I’ve been suspended for 71 hour(s). I’m very confused to this only because I was fine to play 2 days ago, and for the past 2 days I haven’t played since I was over at a friends. And it actually aggravates me because I don’t say things that are out of line, and I know what I can and cannot say. Not to mention I haven’t played for the two days before I was suspended.. I love this game with a passion but I do not understand this at all, Because of the main reason in options it lists Curse Filter Which will block things if you do not wish to see them. (I’m not saying I say anything, because I don’t) It’s just I do not understand this at all.
-Thank you for your time

ONE MORE TIME: The Name and Word Filter is not a license to swear. We have it in place so players can try to protect themselves from offensive language, but having it in the game does not mean that you can breach the UA or the RoC.
You used offensive language — oh yes, you did! -- and earned yourself a time out.
In the future, be more respectful of other players and resist the impulse to swear. The game will be a better place for your restraint, and you will not need to serve a suspension if you use good judgment. Thank you for understanding.

I do want to say again that while I’ve been very harsh with my opinion here, I do still appreciate you taking the time to read and respond to the thread as a whole. I might not be happy with the current state of PvP, but I’m not just here to bash the game – I’d like to see it reach a better place, and hopefully soon.
I know you all love (or want to love) the game :P

Letting you guys know I’m still reading this thread. This topic comes up a lot and there is usually very little feedback simply because its so hard to explain without going over all of game development.
As for the sibling analogy, clothes are clothes. It doesn’t translate well to the different kinds of updates we release. I think relating to computer updates could be better:
Two siblings. One enjoys buildings and tweaking computers, and using it to its full extent to play the latest and greatest games. The other only uses the computer as a means to do homework, play casual games, social network, etc. The first always wants the latest parts, but they’re very expensive and the parents can only afford them on special occasions. However, lots of software for the other sibling may be easy to acquire because its cheap or free, and readily available. Even though the first sibling still wants software too, it’s relatively useless without those shiny expensive parts. In the end, one sibling gets more presents than the other without knowing how different they really are. I hope that makes sense :P
